Using Thunderbird as local mail reader

Hi! I'm trying to figure out how to use Thunderbird as a local mail reader. So far I don't see any way to configure it other than as a POP3 or IMAP mail reader, but I get my mail locally and would like to try using Tbird to read it. What am I overlooking? Compiz window manager?

Has anyone here tried the Compiz window manager under CentOS 5? I just thought I might give it a go, but when I executed "compiz --replace", I got a segfault. This was using the version from the CentOS yum repositories, and logged in to the GNOME desktop. My graphics driver is the proprietary one from NVIDIA. I tried adding Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True" to xorg.conf as this was suggested somewhere on the net, but it didn't make any difference. Hello, I'm trying to implement domainkeys and dkim on my domain and then to get it set up with postfix. Currently i'm having difficulty with the first stage, adding the domainkey txt record to bind, is a special version of bind required to do this? The machine that handles dns is using bind 9.5.1-p3. Music while you work - or not

Wanting to listen to magnatune.com while I worked, I discovered that flash is not working. It appears that I don't have libflashplayer, but yum tells me that no such package is available. I must need a different repo, I think, but what? Currently I have ls /etc/yum.repos.d/ adobe-linux-i386.repo epel-testing.repo CentOS-Base.repo kbsingh-CentOS-Extras.repo CentOS-Media.repo mirrors-rpmforge epel.repo rpmforge.repo I suspect that c5-media repo is discontinued. I've seen no error messages apart from 'No package libflashplayer available.' In theory I have installed the adobe flash-player, but apparently not. I'm stuck. Any help, please? Anne

Hello, What is the best way to protect multiuser systems from brute force attacks? I am setting up a relatively loose DenyHosts policy, but I like the idea of locking an account for a time if too many attempts are made, but to balance this with keeping the user from making a helpdesk call. HI All, I have a directory tree that when the user un-gzips/untars it does into /opt by default. The directory tree is like: ugui | |-- <misc files> |-- source |-----framework |------ <misc files> so when unzipped I want to end it with /opt/ugui and all the stuff below it. How do I do this? Can I also issue one command that will unzip and untar the archive at the same time? (I know I can, I just cant get it right) Thanks! -ML

CentOS 5.3 Anaconda nic device ordering

I have a bunch of HP BL465c G5 blades, with additional dual-port network adapters. The onboard interfaces use the bnx2 driver, while the expansion card uses tg3. All 4 interfaces are detected by both Anaconda and the installed system, but Anaconda is reversing the ordering: Anaconda: eth0 Card 2, Port 1 eth1 Card 2, Port 2 eth2 Card 1, Port 1 eth3 Card 1, Port 2 BIOS and Installed Kernel: eth0 Card 1, Port 1 eth1 Card 1, Port 2 eth2 Card 2, Port 1 eth3 Card 2, Port 2 The main problem I have is that the ifcfg-eth* files have the wrong HWADDR lines in them for the actual network cards. dmesg shows the interfaces in the correct order. I've tried, unsuccessfully to use the "device eth bnx2:tg3" syntax within my kickstart file, as suggested here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Anaconda/NetworkIssues#Mixed_NIC_Cards_and_Dr… If I just use the device line in my kickstart, this doesn't appear to have any effect on the device ordering at all, and using "noprobe nonet" just stops anything from being detected at all. Is there any way to get anaconda to load the drivers in a different order on CentOS 5.3? If its not a couple of thousands, i would suggest: Disabling password-login alltogether, and use keys only. On the other hand, you can also demand that all connection must be made by using a vpn-connection (openvpn/ipsec). After that you can be assured that any attempt is from a local user. BTW, I compiled the driver I need and have this igb.ko file. How do I incorporate that into my initrd.img file that I see on the kickstart CD that is probably my kickstart boot OS. I have downloaded the EE JDK 5.07 for Linux from Sun. If I try and run java_ee_sdk-5_07-linux.bin as a normal user it works fine and I get the gui installer to appear. Hello, I'm running httpd on a Centos 5.3 machine. I'm trying to use .htaccess to disable direct linking to site images. I've got the following rewrite rule, the domain is test.example.com which is at /var/www/test.example.com under which is a directory called images. DNS Server Recommendations

Hi All: I am looking for some possible recommendations on the handling of our internal DNS services. First some background... Until recently our entire network was located within a single facility with internal DNS services provided by our CentOS 4.7 (using BIND). While I had problems with DHCP/DNS communications it was basically working. At the beginning of the month we moved the production servers (a couple of RHEL5.3 boxes with a Windows 2008 server) to a new facility connected to the old facility via a VPN. We are still running with our DevSys as the DNS server but I would like to make the two locations at least partially independent. I have been doing some research (probably enough to be really dangerous to myself<g>) and it looks like I need to setup a master/slave setup. Here are my questions... 1. Is the BIND master/slave the appropriate approach? 2. Can I have each subnet be a master for itself and a slave for the other subnet? 3. Any pointers to applicable docs/examples? 4. Can you recommend a "front end" for BIND (we have webmin installed but I have yet to start working with it)? Any and all thoughts, suggestions, criticisms gladly accepted. Most libraries do not need this permission. Libraries are sometimes coded incorrectly and request this permission. I updated the livecd-tools package from version 013 to 014. This update introduces new interesting features like : - support for Xen kernel - built-in md5sum into the resulting LiveCD ISO - a new API See https://projects.centos.org/trac/livecd/wiki/GetToolset for instructions on how to get this updated toolset. replacing permissions on uploaded windows files

Hello, I've got a CentOS box and users are putting Windows long files on it, files with " " and " - " in their filenames. I'm trying to adjust the permissions as well as user and group membership and i'd like the changes to be sticky. On the tld i've set permissions of 2755 and am trying to batch convert the files and subfolders in it. I've done this: find tld -type f |xargs chmod 644 {} \; find tld -type d |xargs chmod 755 {} \; Both of these are failing due to the spaces and dashes. I've tried enclosing those {} in quotes, no good. Has anyone done this with shell or perhaps perl? Thanks. Dave.

Hey guys, I am trying to make sed append every line containing a string with another line. problem is the appended line needs to start with a tab: # sed -i '/string/a \tstuff\t\t\tmorestuff' file Obviously \t or \x09 etc doesn't get interpreted unless there are other characters before it? How can I get this to begin with a <tab>? Thanks! jlc

Optimizing NFS over loopback

I have set up a local NFS server and I'm accessing it over the localhost interface. Here is my /etc/exports file: /data/vm 127.0.0.1(rw,no_root_squash,async,no_acl,wdelay,no_subtree_check) /data/iso 127.0.0.1(ro,no_root_squash,async,no_acl,wdelay,no_subtree_check) Here is the relevant /etc/fstab entry /dev/sda3/data ext3 defaults12 Things are working, but seem pretty slow. I'm getting about 10mb/sec. I was wondering where the bottleneck could be? Is there a way to optimize the NFS service for better throughput? I am accessing over 127.0.0.1 Thanks in advance, Russ

Hi, Is there an equivalent of a useradd for systems that are using LDAP user management? I know I can build an LDIF file and import it, but it is a bit of a pain to do it manually all the time. Is there not an easier / faster way? Thanks, Eric

FireWire in CentOS 5.3

I am being given a digital camcorder. It uses Mini DV tapes and either connects via typical RCA cables (IE to a tv) or via FireWire. I don't have the brand on hand, but I was told it can be ripped to DV like any standard FireWire camcorder (I believe dvgrab will be sufficient). I just installed an older FireWire card I have that I used at one point in Fedora for my iPod. It was a PITA back then because sometimes an update to Fedora would break the kernel module, so I ended up just using USB. That was some time ago. I scrapped that computer but kept the cards, and have now installed the card in my current computer in hopes that I will be able to go from the camera to HD in preparation for editing / transcoding (to theora) for the web. lspci reports the following info: 01:08.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB12LV26 IEEE-1394 Controller (Link) What is the current state of FireWire in CentOS ? Will there be a need to build a custom kernel I boot into when I want to attach the camera and rip digital video from it? If it matters, I'm 64-bit. I assume I can always plug the camera into my DVD recorder attached to my TV and slip then rip the content from the DVD-R in CentOS but I suspect I'll get better quality going straight from camera to hard disk as I believe the above method is digital to analog to digital, and I believe using dvgrab also results in higher resolution to start with. On the subject of hard disk, I'm probably going to buy another disk for ripping the content. I can go SATA II internal but I'm a little worried about heat since my home is not air conditioned, would an external FireWire drive be a good option or am I better really better off going internal SATA II? The card (and camera) are original FireWire 400, not the faster FireWire 800 that's been out for awhile now. Thanks for any suggestions.

WebDav on CentOS?

Hello, I'm trying to set up webdav on apache on centos. My web area has dav on set, it's permissions are 775 owner of the apache user and group of the webdev group which i put users in who can write to the area. As a user locally logged on to the machine i can cd to the area and create content though it is owned and has a group of the user who made it i don't think this is what i want. Whenever i try to connect via webdav i'm informed that a new folder can not be created. Here's some output any help appreciated. Thanks. Hi all. Julien Tinnes and Tavis Ormandy from the Google Security Team have recently found a Linux kernel vulnerability which affects all 2.4 and 2.6 kernels since 2001 on all architectures. KVM - missing dependency

Hello Everyone, I've installed kvm from the "lfarkas" repo on CentOS 5.3, as per the CentOS wiki page. I now want to install the virt-manager package, but yum is giving me this error: Error: Missing Dependency: python-virtinst >= 0.400.3 is needed by package virt-manager-0.7.0-5.el5.x86_64 (lfarkas) I can't find that package anywhere in that repo. So, where do I get it from? BTW, I would have asked this on the CentOS virt list, but that list is really quiet. How to create a tun-device with CentOS packages only?

Hello List, I've got a somewhat weird question. Let me tell you what my intent is first: We're running a set of Dell boxes with CentOS 4. Some of them use OpenVPN. As we need to monitor the system status of these boxes, we use the Dell supplied OMSA package. As it turns out, OMSA totally breaks if you've got one or more tun devices configured. AFAICT Dell denies support with that issue, because OpenVPN is a third-party add-on. Now instead of discussing with Dell for hours, I'd like to reproduce the issue without OpenVPN which brings me to my question: How can I create a tun device without using any add on packages using only software contained in CentOS? I am trying to write a script that can pass cmd line args into an executable it runs, I need at least 4 args, but I need to pass the rest to it in the script if they exist. $@ doesn't help because I use the 1st and 2nd etc, so how do I elegantly handle passing args 4+ if they exist on the end of the command I call? Is there a simple way without constructing the command to execute on the fly by analyzing $# first and building it everytime? Thanks! jlc

advice needed about "554 Too many recipients"

Hi all, A client of ours just requested to increase the max_recipients in Exim to 300, since he keeps getting "554 Too many recipients" error when sending a marketing email from MS Outlook. Before you tell me to use Pine / Mutt / etc to send plain-text emails via mailman, this isn't an option. I would like to know, what are the implications of increasing the default 100 to 300? If 300 email recipients were added to the "To:" field, does it establish 300 connections to the SMTP server, or not? In the Exim documentation (http://www.exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch14.html#SECID105) I found this: "If this option is set greater than zero, it specifies the maximum number of original recipients for any message. Additional recipients that are generated by aliasing or forwarding do not count. SMTP messages get a 452 response for all recipients over the limit; earlier recipients are delivered as normal. Non-SMTP messages with too many recipients are failed, and no deliveries are done. Note: The RFCs specify that an SMTP server should accept at least 100 RCPT commands in a single message." But, this doesn't tell me if it will have a performance issue with the server, or if other mail servers will have problems with our mail server sending the email to so many recipients in one go. I want to uninstall the default version of firefox, however there appears to be 2 of the same rpm's installed and its complaining.. I've been in Solaris land for the last 5 years and my rpm skills aren't the most current; how is this achieved? Morning all, Little back ground. Running CentOS 5.3 fully update. I basically run this as router and gateway for home network. I have two(2) winblows machines hooked up. I am running samba for shares. I opened up root's mail this morning and found this strange little comment : Connections Denied: lib/access.c:check_access(327) 58.239.84.158 : 1 Time(s) smbd/process.c:process_smb(1062) 58.239.84.158 : 1 Time(s) So I started looking around in /var/log. I looked at my secure logs and saw nothing out of the ordinary. I looked in samba and found a log file 58.239.84.158.log. I opened it up and it said the following: [2009/08/15 06:31:34, 0] lib/access.c:check_access(327) Denied connection from (58.239.84.158) [2009/08/15 06:31:34, 1] smbd/process.c:process_smb(1062) Connection denied from 58.239.84.158 There is nothing on this server that I can not replace. Did I just get hacked? Should I wipe this thing and start over? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks. Lee Perez

priority plugin and httpd/php

Hello, I'm running centos 5.3 with the priority plugin enabled. One of my 3rd party repos has updated httpd and php packages that i want to get, however it won't overwrite the base packages of httpd* and php* since they were installed from base. How can i update just these specific packages httpd* and php* without changing my priority options? Thanks. Dave.

Everytime I see this in the logs my internet access stops for about 5 minutes. Nothing else follows in the logs. I have DSL. Any ideas? I read this document about iptables recent module. http://blog.andrew.net.au/2005/02/16#ipt_recent_and_ssh_attacks and I would like to filter the excessive spam mail sending ip address by iptables recent module. and some questions. iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 25 -m state --state NEW -m recent --set --name SPAM iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 25 -m state --state NEW -m recent --update --seconds 60 --hitcount 4 --rttl --name SPAM -j DROP If I set like above, I can't understand the meaning of the hitcount. it means the number of a packet, session or connection? above rule means if 4 connection for 60 seconds, the ip will be filtered for 60 seconds, right? if some ip was filtered, how long will be filtered? for 60 seconds? when I see the list as cat /proc/net/ipt_recent/SPAM the maximum number is 100. if it reaches the 100, no problem? and how to increase the number? xrdp in EPEL

xrdp is a service that allows you to use mstsc or rdesktop to view your Linux desktop from afar. xrdp is packaged for Fedora and EPEL http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=9026 now you can just type yum -y install xrdp to install it. it's also available in EPEL repo (for redhat enterprise and centos) https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/FAQ#howtouse I have only installed from source, haven't tried this rpm.

OT: Fortunate clueless dd chum - lvm recovery

Looks like the chum did not have to lose any data. Wiping out the MBR and the next 63 blocks apparently only wiped out grub stage1, partition table, and part of the lvm config data. I get to try to do a lvm 'recovery' at his expense now but this is my first time...has anybody ever tried restoring lvm config data back to the md/pv device? Cheers, Christopher

building CentOS rpms?

Hello, I'd like to get in to rpm building and am looking for a CentOS specific document if any to get me going? I want to repackage an existing rpm and give it different runtime options so it'll work on a server, and make an rpm at least one probably more, and then submit them to the rpmforge repo. Hi all, If logging all logs via syslog to a central syslog server that are all Centos based, what GUIs are out there to browse them etc. ? I know about splunk but don't want to go down that route. Also, some servers are hosted and would be best not sending their logs across the net to a central syslog (although we could openvpn them in), so can the same system be setup to receive logwatch emails? Any tips or best practices for this above and beyond just a central syslog server would be very appreciated. Server numbers are in the double figures and some are Windows (would be nice to get some of those 'logs' too - snare?). When I install some RPMS like openoffice 3 on centos x85_64 is there some command that will leave all the actual files alone (leave them installed) but just remove the RPM name from the RPM database so centos now things the packages are not installed? Reason is I was wanting to do this so a next yum update does not get all confused... and the yum update happens just like I never installed openoffice 3. is there a way to do that ? Jerry

Hi, I managed to get my C4580 (4500 series) connected to my router to work with 64 bit 5.3. That printer needs at least hplip 2.8.10 which I found at http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/12086038/com/hplip-2.8.10-0.1.e… It was just a matter of following the manual install instructions for hplip here http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/redhatenterpris… and then getting the necessary dependencies. In the end it worked with (this is for the last line of step 3 in HP's instuctions) rpm -Uvh ./hplip-2.8.10-0.1.el5.test.x86_64.rpm ./python-imaging-1.1.6-2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm ./hpijs-2.8.10-0.1.el5.test.x86_64.rpm ./net-snmp-5.3.2.2-5.el5_3.1.x86_64.rpm ./net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-5.el5_3.1.x86_64.rpm ./lm_sensors-2.10.7-4.el5.x86_64.rpm I'm happy with HP's Linux support! Using CentOS 5.3 (32 bit) on my Desktop with Mozilla Firefox 3.0.12. With one web site (LinkShare) I am getting an SSL error, after clicking to get a more advanced report I do not get that error, using Mozilla Firefox 3.0.13 on M$ Windows and I get the report OK on Windows. It appears, when using Firefox on Linux, that it is not ending up on the LinkShare web site and Firefox is giving me the below error. I use OpenDNS.com for DNS service. Question: How can I verify that there is no corruption in my Firefox installation on Linux and that I have the latest SSL CAs for it? TIA! I set up a CentOS desktop computer for my brother and his kids. When Firefox 3.5 came out he decided to download and install it like he would Windows (he doesn't yet understand the repository system). He's been telling me that it works fine, even though I was skeptical due to my experience with Firefox 3.5 on CentOS 5.3. Then today, he says, "Oh, by the way, the CentOS computer has been rebooting itself every now and then." What?! (This is where he is in Linux -- doesn't realize that it's not like Windows, that it's not supposed to reboot randomly.) "Does it do it when you're in Firefox?" "Yes." He's okay, though, just a matter of uninstalling his home root version of Firefox -- I've been updating his computer with yum, so he still has the newest *repository* release of Firefox also. At any rate, just to let everyone know, whatever the issue is with Firefox 3.5 and *some* CentOS 5.3 computers (an Xorg graphics card incompatibility issue?) -- it goes beyond the RPM package released by Michael Harris. (how long before shared hosts use this....lol) The technique will allow them to effectively observe behaviour found in malicious botnets, or networks of infected machines that can operate on the scale of a million nodes. One of the researchers Ron Minnich, said they are often difficult to analyze since they are geographically spread all over the world. However using virtual machine and a Thunderbird supercomputing cluster for the demonstration, the team was able to run VMS at a similar scale as a botnet. This allows cyber researchers to watch how botnets work and explore ways to stop them in their tracks said Minnich. The largest number of kernals that had been run at once was 20,000 kernels. However the more kernels that can be run at once the more effective cyber security professionals can be in combating the global botnet problem. The hope is one day to emulate the computer network of a small nation, or even one as large as the United States, in order to 'virtualise' and monitor a cyber attack." "The sheer size of the Internet makes it very difficult to understand in even a limited way," said Minnich. It has been estimated that the team will need to run 100 million CPUs by 2018 in order to build a computer that will run at the speeds they need.

CentOS Project Infrastructure

Dear Community, I recently started thinking about how to make a project like CentOS more transparent and open (especially for new contributors). The http://wiki.centos.org/Team page (which Dag created about a year ago) lists about 20 (more or less active) members, divided into core and community contributors. I personally do not like that kind of distinction. Of course there should be something like a 'board' and clear responsibilities (release management and such), but at least the board should be elected by all active members. As we are a community of ppl with high technical skills probably only persons with a valuable number of contributions and knowledge will be elected to the board. A board member could of course be responsible for core dev tasks, too. The board itself could consist of a mix of technical, marketing, or legal orientated ppl. To make this happen, the new maintainer process has to be clarified first. I am thinking about a (frequently maintained) list of open tasks e.g. maintained within trac, from which a new (and even existing) maintainer could choose one. Of course suggestions for task that are not listed there could be published on the ML. The 'Team' page should list major tasks one is working on or responsible for. If one needs help (e.g. I am in need of help for the website update), he/she could add a note to this task list (and maybe even announce on the ML) with contact details (wiki homepage). Other areas of taking part should and are already covered on: http://wiki.centos.org/Contribute But some aspects are still unclear: THE WIKI: For me a wiki is a collaboration platform which should be accessible to every contributor in the same manner (except the front and user pages). That means there should be a join process (where you have to agree to the cc license) which then leads to EditGroup membership. I do not see a good reason why new articles should first be published on the ML. A user should be able to add a new article and then announce it on the ML (if necessary). Same on the personal pages. Of course it makes sense that new users introduce theirself on the ML but they should already have access to their own personal page, before. A comment function could be a good feature but in a comparatively small community like ours, most of everything can be discussed via ML or could be handled through page changelog. I personally see no reason to honor authorship of created pages besides the wiki page history. THE BUGTRACKER: The CentOS bugtracker contains a lot of upstream bugs that cannot be fixed here. We have to make sure that these are tracked upstream and fixed there. THE CONTRIB REPO: This repository has been re-invited in CentOS 5.3 but it's still unclear what it's meant to be for. Could it contain non-free packages. Should'nt oss packages better be pushed to EPEL/RPMFusion or even RPMForge? Where should spec files go? Is there an SVN with write access and an automated build process, already? Barriers on this site should be lowered when it's clear what the repo is meant for. QA: Some of you might know that CentOS has got an QA process before releases. This is an closed process and invite only. There where some reasons for it (e.g. some ppl only took part in the beta program to get early access to upcoming releases) but an invite only QA could not be the solution. This process should be open to all members. BARRIERS: Overall, the barriers for new contributors are much too high. I configured a tunnel where the server is a CentOS 5 x86_64 with compress. vnc - single application or a "remote localhost" on Firefox

Normally I use VNC-over-SSH to provide a complete desktop to a remote user. Is there a way to provide a single application to a user instead of a complete desktop? In this case I am looking for a method to provide remote report-viewing access to LedgerSMB for a company's outside accountant. LedgerSMB runs through a web browser (i.e. http://localhost/ledgersmb) so he doesn't need or want remote access to anything other than one instance of Firefox. In other words, normally the remote users crank up a VNC session and see their full desktop. For this instance I would like to have him see only a Firefox session. A ssh session like "ssh -X user@remotehost firefox" works. But it's painfully slow. On the other hand, VNC has a reasonable amount of snap. The other approach would be to somehow do use some kind of ssh port-forwarding under Firefox so he could run Firefox locally on his own computer, and somehow access http://localhost/ledgersmb on the remote machine. Is there such a thing as a "remote localhost" that would work like that? I don't want to open anything other than ssh on the application server to the big scary world. To complicate things a bit more, the accountant runs Windows on his computer. Looking at the specs the hd is sata. Also the documents for rhel are they the same for centos? I'm looking for items to help me learn/gain knowledge. Should be binary equivalent with RHEL, so the upstream documentation for RHEL should be fine. There may be some differences in the updating procedures, but other than that, I think it should be the same. If I'm wrong, someone more knowledgeable, hopefully will jump in and correct me. Suggest you download the Live CD and burn that and test it on your laptop to see if it is going to work OK on your HW. Hello I'm new to linux and am trying to install centos 5.3 on my laptop and it has an ata drive but centos does not see the had or cdrom. Googleing does not give me much to check. The laptop is a hp-g60 249wm, latest bios update. The bios does not have any ability to change drive information. The bios basically allows me to only set time, date and boot item. ntp will not drift to correct time

Hi On 5.3 i have a situation where some boxes have been 3 or 4 seconds out and restarting ntpd has fixed the issue. What i dont understand is why the clocks did not drift to the correct time when the config seems correct in that restarting ntp did correct the time. Slow IDE on GeForce 8200 board

In my haste for help, I stupidly hit reply and changed the subject which I thought was enough for a new message, not giving much thought for the threading, etc. So apologies for the hijack, although I would think it fairly obvious that it wasn't deliberate or obvious to me... or a big deal really. My mail doesn't thread. Some further info for those actually interested in helping, I forgot that the HD in question had an Ubuntu 8.10 install on it, so I fired that up and hdparm -t produced 56MB/Sec. So the issue is either kernel or config. Thanks for your patience. ----- Forwarded Message ---- I have a system who's normal activity is running Xen 3.3.1 with Centos 5.3 as the DomU. I had reason to connect an IDE drive to the single IDE interface that this board has. I was getting slow performance. hdparm -t revealed that the thoughput was down to just 2.7 MB/sec. After some tweaking (switch on 32 bit,etc) and retesting under a non-Xen config, I managed to get that to 8MB/Sec. When I move the drive to a USB to IDE adapter, hdparm -t gives me about 18MB/Sec. Big improvement, although I don't know if it is then perfect.. My kernel is 2.6.18-128.4.1.el5. I have kernel parameter pci=nomsi. I can't remember exactly why I needed this, but there was a good reason, maybe SATA drive not working properly or some such. Could this be the cause of my issue? The motherboard blurb states that the IDE interface is ATA/133 compliant and I am using the provided IDE cable. I have tried three hard disks, all with similar results. (2x 40gb + 1x 160gb) lspci | grep IDE gives 00:06.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] IDE (rev a1) As a reference, hdparm -t against the SATA drive in AHCI mode on the same board gives about 110MB/Sec. Hello, I was seeing the FSF's GNU site and noticed that CentOS was included as the proprietary or unendorsed distribution and not as the one following their free software distribution guidelines. So my question is, is it really not possible to comply with them or are we just not willing to! I think by default all software comes (at least with the server stuff) is free on CentOS but though not sure about that kernel "blob" thing! ** *All of the distributions listed on this page fail to follow the guidelines in at least two important ways:* - *They do not have a policy of only including free software, and removing nonfree software if it is discovered. Most of them have no clear policy on what software they'll accept or reject at all. The distributions that do have a policy unfortunately aren't strict enough, as explained below.* - *The version of the kernel Linux that they distribute includes blobs: pieces of object code, distributed without source, usually to help operate some device.* CentOS *We're not aware of problems in CentOS aside from the two listed above: there's no clear policy about what software can be included, and nonfree blobs are shipped with Linux. retrieving specific packages from a repo

Hello, I'm setting up an additional repo on a 5.3 machine. I only want three packages out of it, and to exclude all others. I know there's a line to add to the repo file, googling didn't give it to me, anyone know how to get only a selected set of packages from a repo? This is probably a very simple question. Thanks.
