As for TUV, they decided they can only support ~2.5k packages, regardless of the fact that they're the #1 Linux company. I maintain that RF is way too large to be properly maintainable. lost CentOS repositories from yum

Hi, I was using yum, which was working very well. Then I decided to try yumex, and installed yumex, which again worked fine. But, after that, when I came back to use console yum, it started giving error messages. So, I removed yumex and tried, in vain. Then I removed yum, and installed it with rpmforge repository. It works fine, but I only have rpmforge repository. How can I add CentOS repositories like Addons, Extras, etc back to my yum? Thanks

When you build audacious from SPEC + tarball, it spits out audacious + audacious_plugins, both as RPMs and as SRPMs (actually, it spits around 15 plugins RPMs). RPMforge misses the plugins, that's all. Probably just triggering a rebuild would fix it all. Instead of talking for ages about patches, what builds and what doesn't, and why "better services" would need pay etc. maybe someone (Dag?) could have triggered the rebuild of audacious for 100 times in the meantime. Thank you for answer. I change /etc/fstab and using UUID instead of LABEL. after reboot, UUID did NOT change disk sequence back to what I want. [OT] Batch Job Scheduler/Manager

Hi. Looking for suggestions/ideas. I have pretty loose requirements at this point, but I am looking for a tool (or set of tools) where I can automate and control a large group of tasks by a basic web front end. I have a series of scripts that do various conversions of data or media, as well as analysis and I want to be able check their status, see if they completed or if they failed. Then possibly react or setup alternate jobs if they passed or failed, etc. - some basic logic. I want to avoid building something for this. But if there already exists a tool(s) that I could tailor that would be good too. Something Perl would be perfect, but PHP could be made to work. Free or not would be acceptable. Thanks for any ideas. -Mauriat

Hi all, Is anybody here using Fortran90 and Fortran77 on their CentOS-machine(s)? If so, did you get that from a repo or something? One of our PhD-students needs a software that requires the Fortran compilers mentioned in order to make the sources for our i7-machines. The Fortran stuff that is available to me is from the standard CentOS repos, as well as Rpmforge and EPEL repos, from which I got gcc43-fortran and some more dependencies and and such. But as far as I can tell, this is not going to work. This is all new territory to me, to have to compile stuff... Please let me know if this is off-topic and should be taken elsewhere. Playing with php 5.3.0

Even though I do not recommend it for production yet, I packaged and am playing with php 5.3.0 - src.rpm at http://www.clfsrpm.net/php53/ (needed epel to build) Other than the suhosin loadable module messing up pear's ability to do anything, initial tests show it working fairly well. Looks like the enchant module is a nogo on CentOS (aspell too old) but in the few hours of testing, none of my code (yet) is broken in it. There are some warnings in the log files w/ respect to squirrelmail and setting time zone (stock centos squirrelmail), I'll have to look into that, and the php src.rpm there actually has a minor bug - it should obsolete/provide pecl-Fileinfo, but I'll wait for suhosin to come up with their patch to core php before I bother to update. Anyway, it's there for anyone who feels like playing with 5.3.0 to see what breaks, you just to rebuild the src.rpm.

It's therefore an ugly hack to allow: *** the use of the following packages from RPMforge: (1) gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-ffmpeg (2) mplayer mplayer-fonts mplayer-skins mplayerplug-in smplayer (3) vlc *** the regular use of EPEL for everything else; *** the use of newer packages, such as GIMP 2.3.15 as an "almost-2.4" alternative to the obsolete 2.2.12; *** the use of other (unavailable in EPEL or newer) packages, including "cosmetic mood enhancers": (i) gnome-dustwave-theme 0.1, a mix of two themes introduced with Ubuntu Jaunty: it uses Dust for Metacity, and New Wave for the GTK+ decorations. Compiz effects *must* be disabled. (ii) gtk-nimbus-theme 0.1.2, the latest default theme that comes with OpenSolaris 2009.06. Too many repos, working or not, with packages frozen in testing or not, and this is exactly why I needed my tiny repo to partially "fix" the RPMforge<->EPEL breakage with regards to the exact RF packages I am interested in, and also to add packages that couldn't go into EPEL (like a newer GIMP that would not require any other library update), etc. So no, I don't have a problem with Dag, as someone suggested. I only find partially-broken repos "not Zen" (bad karma, if you wish), and it's even worse when their SRPMs can't build. But I *do* have a problem with RPM Fusion and Karanbir's repo, because they keep packages in "testing" even if nothing happens (they could stay there until 2014, right?). RPMRepo is the best proof that collaboration is close to impossible. And ElRepo is the best proof that other small repos could arise, and they have a reason to exist. But all this is on the "expenses" (not pecuniary, but *nervous*) of the end user, who will get confused and who might also experience system breakage. wan hdlc_ppp and IPv6

Hi list, I can successfully build the driver modules; hdlc, dlci, syncppp, and lmc from the 2.6.18-128.1.14 kernel source rpm, and have managed to create a 'wan kmod' rpm. It all works fine for IPv4, but now I need IPv6 for ppp connections, which doesn't work for me. I think I'll need to back port Krzysztof Halasa's 'ppp for generic hdlc' patches to the 2.6.18-128.1.14.el5 kernel sources. Has anyone worked on this? By default, it creates the album on your system...you can upload to their servers or your own, at your discretion. While picassa is certainly an answer, and one I use on occassion, I'm far happier using my own server(s) or hosting locally on my workstaion than relying solely on google's cloud (rock solid though it is...no negative connotation about google intended). You also get what you want out of it...if it's a 'hog', consider if you're linking from thumbs to mid-size display and from *that* to original hi-res. That's my basic setup and I haven't had a problem with resources on my local workstation (1gb ram, 2,4mhz intel, 0.5TB drive, albums of 5K pictures or more, centos 5.3 32bit) or on my servers. I normally don't like when a SRPM doesn't build, and I believe that until it's fixed, it should either be removed (alongside with the corresponing RPMs), or be moved to a "testing" section. That's all. But this also means that helping to fix some issues in such a huge repo is frightening, and as long as it won't fix the RF<->EPEL incompatibility, I won't see the motivation! As Dag noted, those 4 newer libs in EPEL that break VLC and MPlayer (so my repo ugly fixes the issue for *me* and for whoever likes to use those repos the way *I* do it) are not an easy issue: should anyone want to rebuild everything in RPMforge that depends on them, most likely some packages wouldn't build at all! So: RF can't be "fixed", EPEL can't be "fixed". To avoid the annoyance of protecting packages and whatnot, I've put in *my* repo Dag's older libs with versions higher than whatever is now in EPEL, so that EPEL won't break Dag's VLC and MPlayer. Oh, maybe this breaks some other multimedia apps from EPEL, but I am not using EPEL for multimedia, so I don't care. Maybe I am stuck with my ideas, and maybe I should be thinking "outside of the box". Some how I have changed something such that the command line: gconftool-2 -t string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /usr/share/backgrounds/images/other.jpg does not change my background any longer. Has someone come across this before? How can I change gnome back to ALL default settings? Jerry

filesize limitation in CentOS or exim?

Hallo, today I had a surprising situation. Exim stopped. It's a German centos 5.3 64 Bit installation so the messages are partial in German. Then I tried a restart: [root@centos ~]# service exim restart exim beenden: [FEHLGESCHLAGEN] exim starten: /bin/bash: line 1: 6596 Die maximale Dateigröße ist überschritten /usr/sbin/exim -bd -q30m [FEHLGESCHLAGEN] Reducing the size of /var/log/exim/main.log has solved the Problem. I presume it is a message of CentOS, not from exim. Is this correct? I think, max filesize in CentOS is 2 TB? See http://www.centos.org/product.html in "Filesystem". Where can I change it? It is not clear to me if any recommendations were accepted or are being debated internally or if this fizzled out somehow. Is there any process to this kind of thing other than a few developers agreeing it a good thing and then just doing it? Is there any reason (besides upstream does it) to compile php5 with --without-sqlite in CentOS5 ? Would it conflict with the sqlite that yum needs? Is there a repo (centosplus, rpmforge...) having a php5 and sqlite enabled ? Greetings CentOS community! I connect to a very large number of new machines with a handful of my CentOS boxen. Whenever I connect to a new host, I *REALLY* would like to *NOT* see the error message such as this: The authenticity of host 'w.x.y.z (w.x.y.z)' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is 62:7a:6c:e5:03:f5:47:be:23:a5:c5:e5:c3:60:9b:8d. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes Also, some of these systems are being setup with an automated login system via SSH keys which means I have to manually login to each of the boxes before the automated scripting will work just to clear the 'authenticity' error. Is there a way to disable this error/authenticity check globally for a system? I understand it may not be the best practice in terms of security, but for an internal trusted host, I have no reservations making this change. Help! :-) --Tim

I am not against 64-bits (we use it for many, many years using Solaris) but what concerns me is the stability of 64-bit Linux. Hi all, I'm pleased to announce that the new dm-ioband RPM package (v1.12.0) has been released at: http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/ioband/wiki/dm-ioband dm-ioband provides disk bandwidth control on per partition, per user, per process and per virtual machine (such as KVM or Xen) basis. The RPM packages are for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x and CentOS 5.x. They were tested on RHEL 5.2 and CentOS 5.3 and will also work on other 5.x versions. The major change of this release is that a new bandwidth control policy "range-bw" is supported. This policy is developed by Dong-Jae Kang, and it allows users to set a minimum and maximum I/O bandwidth by absolute numbers. Set hostname via DHCP ?

Hi. I just setup one of my machines as a DHCP server. I'd like it to handle the hostnames of clients. Don't know if this is an orthodox thing to do (feel free to add your comments :oD). Here's the server's relevant lines of dhcpd.conf: --8<------- ... # Envoyer les noms d'hôtes aux clients use-host-decl-names on; # Adresses statiques host babasse { hardware ethernet 00:0d:61:ae:6b:8f; fixed-address 192.168.1.249; } --8<------- Now the question is: how should the configuration look like on the client side, so the hostname gets effetively fetched from the DHCP server? Thanks for your help Sean, did all the steps you mentioned. One thing I don't understand, when partitions are created, why does Linux number it awkwardly? For example, I created 1 Primary partition of 10% disk, then created 1 Extended partition of 90% disk. Inside that extended partition, I created 3 logical partitions 33% each. It went numbering sdb1, sdb5, sdb6 and sdb7. Where's the hell 2,3 and 4? Anyways, I've got my partitions now and formatted them so, it's all good. Thanks for your help with this. Next, as I went through Bacula's pages, I found that they mostly use tape drives for backup....ugh.......how can I use my usb partitions with Bacula? Any ideas? Thanks again! Cheers :)

External USB Drive partitioning and formatting

Hi, I just bought a Seagate 1TB USB drive thinking that I could create a few partitions in it, format in ext3 fs, then configure bacula to setup a backup server in my CentOS box and backup my windows and mac clients. I have plugged the drive and mounted in /mnt/usbdrive and is seen as /dev/sdb1 by the OS. Bingo! The yum update took care of it. Oddly enough, until I started my new job 2 months ago I'd always been in the habit of running 'yum -y update' first thing after installing Fedora or CentOS. But the product software we develop does not like that very much so I got out of the habit very quickly after blowing up a machine by doing that :-/ Fortunately it was not a production box. But I do recall actually that I'd done it on my desktop at one point shortly after starting. Thanks all! I'm going to probably re-install my own Vista box here at home with Centos 5.3 64 bit, so I'll try the other method on it. Um, maybe something for a whole new thread, but does CentOS support eSATA? My desktop at home here has a port for it, and the USB drive in question does eSATA as well. Aaaaaa, I'm pulling out my hair over here! I have an external USB drive which I had at work, connected just fine to my CentOS 5.3 box. I recall there was some jiggery-pokery involved, but do not recall just what. So now I'm on my wife's freshly installed CentOS 5.3 laptop trying to get it going, and I keep getting errors about FATAL: Module fuse not found. Minor dovecot/KMail problem

I'm running a dovecot/IMAP server under CentOS-5.3 on my desktop, reading the mail with KMail on my laptop. I have what seems a venerable and well-documented problem/bug; when I click on "Check Mail" I get an error message "Error while getting folder information" ... Actually, this doesn't appear to have the slightest effect on kmail, which works perfectly if one just presses Continue. But I have worked out that the cause of the problem is that there exists a kind of ghost folder, "uidvalidity", which is listed among the folders on the kmail page but does not in fact seem to exist in my maildir on the server. Deleting the folder under kmail has no permanent effect; it simply re-appears when I re-start kmail. I assume the folder is listed in some way in the dovecot.index ; and my question really is: if I delete this index file will it be re-created automatically? This bug/feature seems to have been present for years, which I suppose is par for KDE. To make it as difficult as possible to diagnose, the error message on the kmail page is incomplete, even when expanded to the whole screen. In particular it does not specify (on the visible part) what folder is causing the problem. Nor is the error listed with other dovecot information in /var/log/messages . Hi, I'm trying to run Celtx (a screenplay formatter) in CentOS 5.3 from the shell. If I run celtx-bin I get the following error: ./celtx-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libjemalloc.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory If I run celtx I get ./celtx-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libgio-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I can't find either of these files in the repositories. I find libgioXXX for OpenSuse and Mandriva at PBone, but not for Red Hat. I'm guessing these files are part of a bigger library? Any pointers would be appreciated. 2TB partition limitation on X86_64 version??

we have DELL server with Centos 5.3 X86_64 bits version on it. This server also have couple MD1000 connect to it. We configured MD1000 as one hardware Volume size 2990GB. I tried to use "fdisk" to partition this 2990Gb volume and "fdisk" can only see 2000GB. does 64 bits O.S. still have 2TB limitation on File system? Does there has other tool can partition disk size large than 2TB? Problem with Logitech wireless keyboard EX110

I got a Logitech EX110 wireless keyboard and mouse set about a year or so ago, maybe more. The number pad on the keyboard stopped working after a while, so I complained to Logitech, and they sent me a new keyboard (actually, the whole set). I've had the problem on and off again a couple of times since then, but it usually only lasts a few days before all is well again. However, my son also has the same set (well, same model, different pieces of hardware) on his Windows XP machine, and he has _never_ had this problem. Tonight, he suggested that it might be a Linux problem, so I took our spare keyboard of this same type and switched them on my machine. Surprise: the new keyboard has exactly the same problem - no response from the number pad. Actually, that's not entirely accurate. The num lock and the Enter key both work, but the 5 key produces some control combination I don't recognize (seems to behave something like ^V of a previously ^X'd clipboard copy, unrelated to the current input), and the + key which seems to produce something like ^V^V, or "highlight the current terminal line" or something, but none of the other keys work at all. In any case, it looks like this is a problem with the keyboard driver, not the keyboard hardware. If I replace the wireless set with a wired keyboard and mouse, without rebooting, the mouse works, but the keyboard does not. (Apparently, after I tried the following, it turned out to be a bad keyboard....) If I replace the keyboard and reboot, oh, foo, bad keyboard. But! If I reboot with a good keyboard, it works, and then I can switch back to the wireless set and everything works, _including_ the number pad: 0.123456789/*-+ Is there a way to refresh the keyboard driver without rebooting? Anyway, thoughts, suggestions, etc. welcome. mhr

Secure mail login problem

Hi all, Finally got around to making sendmail and dovecot use a secure log in procedure on my server. Now when I open up outlook it goes through a secure log in. Unfortunately, I am using my own self signed cert on the server for this. Hence, I get, for every single account, everytime I open up outlook a warning about untrusted cert. I have looked around and found a spot in IE to 'import' a cert of some kind...and this would seem like the way to make it work. I am unsure exactly what I am supposed to copy or run on the server to then save to my home computer to then add to the 'import' part. For sendmail I made a sendmail.pem and dovecot already came installed with its cert. It is annoying to have the warnings everytime I open outlook up and if anyone has experience with this stuff I would not mind a quick helping hand. Thanks all. Bob

card reader not responding

I saved pictures on an SD card with my Nokia phone (1 GB). Now, I'm trying to use the card on my Acer Aspire 3680 (laptop) running 5.3 and gnome. Popping the card in (until it clicks) evokes nothing from the system log or dmesg, and I don't see anything relevant in /dev. (What is the device for this?) lspci has this entry: 0a:09.2 Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments 5-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD) I couldn't find anything in Cent's wiki (searching for "card reader"), so I tired Google's linux SE, and found this: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64974 I tried all 3 modprobe lines (as root) - "FATAL ... not found." So, one problem seems to be that I'm unfamiliar with modprobe; what's wrong? Do I need to install something? I should note that I'm not at all familiar with setting up new stuff like this. If I'm going at it wrong, please inform!

When I read the online RPM python programming guide at http://docs.fedoraproject.org/drafts/rpm-guide-en/ch16s05.html, I got confused at the EVR() function as the function returns the (epoch, version, release) as a string “%epoch-%version-%release”, and so the RPM comparing process is simplified as string comparing – which doesn’t look correct, am I wrong? CentOS 5.3; x11 lost keyboard

Howdy, I have an IBM thinkpad with it's "standard" monitor and keyboard. It's been connected to a larger monitor and usb keyboard and usb mouse. The xorg.conf is a dual head config. This has been working for a few weeks now but has started failing. During boot and subsequent login the keyboard and mouse (gpm started) and display (larger monitor) work fine. When I startx, the keyboard becomes "dead to the world". NO signals are sent from the keyboard as far as I can tell. I had just configured VNC server and made it start at boot time when this problem appeared. I am sadly in need of hints/tips/suggestions as to how to trouble shoot this problem. Thanks, George... Hey guys, Looking through my book and the web and I am not having any success returning data from a search. I need to have awk search for a string and print the first field which is no problem but now its returning two options as the input data has changed. The change is reliable, I only want the first field if it ends in a regex that I have, and I only want what that regex matches to be printed. Is it possible to do this in a one liner so I don't need to construct an awk script? I suppose I could pipe it into grep and cut but that's not very sexy :) Any ideas? Thanks! jlc

setup VLAN without primary LAN?

we would like setup VLAN on CENTOS 5.X and 4.x. Only VLAN will active, but primary LAN NOT active. E.g "eth0" inactive, but "eth0.2" active. I have been tried several ways, but never successful. We're trying to setup a dual-primary DRBD environment, with a shared disk with either OCFS2 or GFS. The environment is a Centos 5.3 with DRBD82 (but also tried with DRBD83 from testing) . Setting up a single primary disk and running bonnie++ on it works. Setting up a dual-primary disk, only mounting it on one node (ext3) and running bonnie++ works When setting up ocfs2 on the /dev/drbd0 disk and mounting it on both nodes, basic functionality seems in place but usually less than 5-10 minutes after I start bonnie++ as a test on one of the nodes , both nodes power cycle with no errors in the logfiles, just a crash. When at the console at the time of crash it looks like a disk IO (you can type , but actions happen) block happens then a reboot, no panics, no oops , nothing. ( sysctl panic values set to timeouts etc ) Setting up a dual-primary disk , with ocfs2 only mounting it on one node and starting bonnie++ causes only that node to crash. After setting up the booth [1] we started the usual socializing by doing this, we met Brian Schueler again who created a PowerPC 32 version of CentOS and even a ARMv5. This is quite impressive and we all gathered around to see a little demonstration. Further we talked to the usual suspects from Fedora and Red Hat which was represented quite strongly this year. Nothing special about the booth [2] this time we have an iMac on display on which we are showing some information about CentOS. Then we went on dismantling a thinkpad to see how it looked on the inside and some members of the team visited some talks. We are now off to the pub for some food and German Beer. I like it because there's no requirement for SQL and you can basically upload the original images straight from the camera to a directory tree. PHPix2 then lets the user view pictures in a variety of resolutions, with forward/previous thumbnails, album descriptions, etc. It's easy to maintain backup copies because it's just a regular directory tree. Hello: I have a Supermicro SuperServer 5015P-TR. It has a Pentium D and is running CentOS x86_64. Can this machine use 8GB RAM? I think it should because it is running a 64 bit OS, but I am concerned because it is fundamentally 32 bit hardware. Anyone have any experience in this area? how to yum install after deleting some files?

Hello, all. I have deleted some files for mistake. So I would like to re-install those files using yum install. But if I execute yum install some_package, that doesn't work, because some files are remain, I guess. So is there any yum install option to re-install forcely when some files are deleted? Should I remove all related files first to re-install using yum? Compile driver for new kernel rpm

Hi All, My question is directed at those with kernel compiling experience. I have a driver source xxxxx.c file and a Makefile with it. I want to recompile the kernel to include the driver and rebuild the initrd.img. Where do I copy the file in the kernel sources? I currently have it in a sub folder of the drivers directory in the kernel source folder. There is one more question if I may, it does not have a xxxx.h (header file) do I need it? The driver does compile perfectly without it. But I am not sure if I need to compile it into the kernel? How do I change passwords / remove users for Samba?

I've got a bit of a problem with Samba. I just can't work out how to change passwords or remove users. I've just got user security.. lines in smb.conf are: security = user passdb backend = tdbsam I've removed the user using pdbedit, I've removed the unix user, smbpasswd says the user doesn't exist yet I can still connect to the shares. I'm obviously just missing something here. Can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks

RHEL, centos and seeing if i now understand this

ok, given the flurry of responses to my original post, let me see if i have a handle on this as i think i've finally figured it out and, yes, it does make sense. the scenario is that there is a very large software company in the area whose only officially supported linux platform is currently suse. however, they are getting increasing call to have their product run on red hat. for most of their clients (who are fairly sizable) who will want official support, RHEL will be the obvious choice and the software company will advertise that RHEL is what they support. the SW company will be happy, the clients will be happy, and red hat will be happy. on the other hand, if there is the occasional client who is perhaps not as large, or doesn't have a budget for RHEL, centos will be the obvious option if they're prepared to do their own support. that scenario will, i'm guessing, not be that common so red hat has nothing to worry about it in terms of cutting into their revenue stream in any significant way. and, finally, for any client that chooses centos, that will represent a possible support contract for independent linux consultants. sound about right? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. rpm -qa not displaying sources

Hi All, I must have missed something here. I installed my kernel source using rpm -ivh kernel-`uname -r`.el5.src.rpm it installs perfectly, without error, but if I cd to the /usr/src/redhat folder, all I get is SOURCES and SPECS... rpm -qa | grep kernel doesn't return the kernel source rpm I installed only the kernel, devel and headers. I'd recommend using the beta of Gallery3 instead - it will be upgradable to the final version, and -3 is so much nicer to work with than -2. Actually, I've stayed on -1 simply because -2 was way too complex. You won't get it through yum, but you can update using git instead of having to download and untar new versions. BR Bent

Slow CentOS VM when running off the network

I have a CentOS 5.3 VM running under VMware on a WIndows XP laptop. Everything works fine when connected to the network. However, removed from the network, most everything in the CentOS VM takes minutes to complete. For instance, starting a new Terminal window takes over 3 minutes. I did an strace, and there are a couple of long waits when trying to open a socket (/tmp/.ICE-unix/XXXXX for instance). The host and the VM can ping each other fine, but any access to the VM (either external or from within) eventually succeeds, but it takes a long time. First, I thought I'd reduce the default socket timeout (which I believe is set to around 90 seconds), but I can't find where to do that on a system wide level. But I really need to figure out what is causing the problem in the first place. I'm assuming the network is somehow misconfigured, but I don't know how. Alfred

problem with centos 5.3 upgrade

Hi All, I'm running CentOS 5.3 x86, and recently my yum update isn't running as it should. It pops up with sub conflict messages for i386 packages, which I don't need - even though yum is downloading them. Till now I've done the galleries manually from Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I feel that is a dead end, kinda', besides the fact that the galleries created are rather static. I'd like an easier way to do this, eg uploading images in folders directly to the gallery and it will take care of what needs to be done automagically, like resizing etc. So far I've come across a project called Gallery2, that seems to do what I want. Downside is that no rpm-packages are available with yum with this one. What web photo gallery software do you guys use? oVirt on CentOS 5.3?

Hi, Has anyone been succesful in installing oVirt on CentOS 5.3? While it looks like a greate virtualization package, they only support FC10, and the installation instructions are for FC9. So, has anyone installed it on CentOS yet?
