qemu-sparc, not to be confused with qemu-system-sparc

I installed CentOS 7.6 then installed all things QEMU on my machine. I have a SPARC image I need to bringing up in a VM. I've been using *qemu-system-sparc *on a box on which I have Fedora-30 installed. $ qemu-system-sparc -m 256 -hda solaris_v2-qemu_v2.2.0.disk -nographic -bios ./openbios-sparc32 Can I use *qemu-sparc* to bring up my Solaris image: *solaris_v2-qemu_v2.2.0.disk* ? If so, how? It's not apparent and there's almost no info on it. BTW, *qemu-sparc* come with (on CentOS 7.6) when you: $ sudo yum install qemu* *PS> I've tried to install qemu-system-sparc on my CentOS box but ended up in a never-ending whack-a-mole game of dependencies.*

Alternative to laptop

I am considering buying a small, and therefore easily portable, computer as an alternative to the laptop I already have. Obviously it would not have battery, a screen, nor a keyboard etc. but more or less be an easily portable computing unit to move between offices where a keyboard and monitor(s) could then be connected. I want to run CentOS 7, later CentOS 8. The smaller, the better, however, there are certain key features I would like to have: - HDMI for 2 monitors - USB for keyboard - 2 extra USB for eg external harddisk etc. - both wifi and at least Gb Ethernet cable connector Probably at least 16 Gb of memory, capability to drive two high-resolution monitors and whatever else might be nice such as SSD of at least 256 Gb. Size wise it would be nice if it were no larger than a "book", whatever size that might be. Does anyone use something like the above, or know of a computer meeting the above criteria?

Server fails to boot

First some history. This is an Intel MB and processor some 6 years old, initially running CentOS 6. It has 4 x 1TB sata drives set up in two mdraid 1 mirrors. It has performed really well in a rural setting with frequent power cuts which the UPS has dealt with and auto shuts down the server after a few minutes and then auto restarts when power is restored. The clients needed a Windoze server for a proprietary accounting package they use, thus I have recently installed two SSD drives (500GB each) also in a raid 1 mirror and installed CentOS 7 as the host and also VirtualBox running Windoze 10. The hard drives continue to hold their data files. This appeared to work just fine until a few days ago. After a power cut the server would not reboot. It takes a while to get in front of the machine, add a monitor, keyboard and mouse only to find: Warning: /dev/disk/by-id/md-uuid-xxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxx does not exist repeated three times - one for each of the /, /boot, and swap raid member sets along with a Warning: /dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxx does not exist for the /dev/md125 which is the actual raid 1 / device. The system is in a root shell of some sort as it has not made the transition from initramfs to the mdraid root drive. there are some other lines of info and a txt file with hundreds of lines of boot info, ending with the above info (as I recall). I tried a reboot - same result, rebooted and tried an earlier kernel - same result, tried a reboot to the recovery kernel and all went well. System comes up, all raids sets are up and in sync - no errors. So, no apparent H/W issues, no mdraid issues apparently, but none of the regular kernels will now boot. a blkid shows all the expected mdraid devices with the uuids from the error message all in place as expected. I did a yum reinstall of the most recent kernel as I thought that may repair any /boot file system problems - particularly initramfs, but no difference, will not boot, same exact error messages. Thus I now have it running on the recovery kernel, with all the required server functions being performed, albeit on an out of date kernel. Google has one solved problem similar to mine but the solution was change the BIOS from AHCI to IDE - that does not seem correct as I have not changed BIOS, although I have not checked it at this time. Another solution talks about a race condition and the md raid not being ready when required during the boot process and thus to add delay in the kernel boot line in grub2. Although no one indicated this actually worked. Another proposed solution is to mount the failed devices from a recovery boot and rebuild initramfs. Before I do this I would like to ask those that know a little more about the boot process, what is going wrong? I can believe the most recent initramfs being a problem, but all three other kernels too?? Yet the recovery kernel works just fine. As the system is remote, I would like some understanding of what's up before I do any changes - if a reboot occurs and fails, it will mean another trip. Oh, one other thing, it seems the UPS is not working correctly, thus it may not have shut down cleanly. Working to replace batteries in the UPS. TIA for your insight.

Script to Check 7.x Hardware Compatibility?

Scope of classes in CFE 3.10.2 on CentOS 7

Hi folks, I have a question concerning scope of classes in CFEngine 3. I run CFE 3.10.2 on CentOS 7.4. # cf-agent -V CFEngine Core 3.10.2 # cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS Linux release 7.4.1708 (Core) I'm logged in as root and located in current working dir /root. The definition of class is_dir should depend on directories existing inside /tmp/scope_of_class. Some background information: my aim is to create webserver vhost configuration files where I have two variants, one with SSL configuration and one without SSL configuration. Which one to configure depends if the directory with the SSL certificate exists for a given vhost or not. I'll replace the report promise type by a file promise type, which should bring the correct vhost configuration file in place, assumed that I understand how the scope of the class definition works. HI All, I have some remote computers - at times I issue commands to take screen shots. I use xwd -silent -root or import -silent -window root to do so. It seems at times the screen capture is the actual current content. It might be a previous displayed item etc... Anyone ran across this or thoughts ? Jerry

CentOS 7 hibernation laptop

I have a recent Dell Inspiron laptop on which I installed CentOS 7. I have, however, failed somewhere since I do not have a hibernate option when shutting down, only a suspend option. I believe I created the necessary hibernation partition large enough for the RAM the machine has, 16 Gb if I remember correctly. How do I identify where the problem lies?

32-bit CentOS

It appears that CentOS 7 was the last one with a 32-bit version. I'm trying to install it on an older laptop and having some trouble. I have CentOS-7-i386-Everything-1810.iso and have verified it. Using either dd or mediawriter to put a copy on a 16 GB thumb drive seems to work. But then the laptop reports, "no boot image found". Note that the first 32 KB of the iso is all zeros, meaning that there is no MBR or partition table included. According to the 0_README.txt on the CentOS mirrors, the Everything ISO, "contains the complete set of packages for CentOS Linux 7. It can be used for installing or populating a local mirror. This image needs a 16GB USB flash drive as it is too large for DVD isos... You can burn these images to a DVD or 'dd' them to a USB flash drive. After the boot media has been prepared, boot the computer off the boot media." epoch rpm el8 obsolete?

I am building a new workstation based on EL8 now. As someone else here mentioned, the raw EL8 distribution is unusable as a workstation. Therefore I am building lot of additional packages. Today I came across a problem with a custom package with an Epoch version, that kills the yum/dnf update process (it tries to find a "best" package etc.). My actually question; is the RPM Epoch stanza obsolete now (for EL8)? I remember that they also started to delete Groups categories ... -- LF

adding uefi to kickstart CentOS 7

I am trying to add an efi partition to my working kickstart file. bootloader --driveorder=sda --append="rhgb quiet biosdevname=0 net.ifnames=0" clearpart --all --initlabel part / --ondisk=sda --fstype xfs --size=20000 --asprimary part swap --ondisk=sda --size=4000 --asprimary part /boot/efi --ondisk=sda --fstype efi --size=1000 --asprimary part /home --ondisk=sda --fstype xfs --size=1 --asprimary --grow the line with /boot/efi is the only new item other then "removing" --location=mbr from the bootloader line. The install is not working. It stops on the Installation part with selections 1-8. I see no errors on screen - but the selection for "Install source" has a "!" and "error setting up install source" is there. when I goto another console and run fdisk -l /dev/sda nothing shows so my partitions are not getting setup. What did I miss to setup efi ? Thanks, Jerry

qemu uefi boot

I am trying to play with qemu uefi booting... I found the OVMF package and installed it. I added the "-bios /usr/share/OVMF/OVMF_CODE.secboot.fd" to my command line. when running it says cannot load "/usr/share/OVMF/OVMF_CODE.secboot.fd" The file is there. I'm trying this on CentOS 7.6 How do I correctly boot UEFI with qemu ? Thanks Jerry

I'm probably missing something really simple. I've installed an RH8 IAM in AWS and I'm trying to build packages on it. gedit font size

We recently installed CentOS 7 on a system. We chose the GNOME desktop install option and have used yum to install all of the available updates. The first run of yum update yielded about 450 megabytes of items to be installed or updated. All of the updates have been successful. One issue with our new CentOS system is that some users want to use gedit, but the displayed font size is extremely small. Internet searches for a way to increase font size have not yielded any useful information. Is there a standard method to make the gedit font size larger? Thanks.

Performance issues/difference of two servers running same task (one is quicker)

Hi I need some advice what to do next, even if someone tells me to check out (an)other mailing list(s), tuning site or point me in a better direction how to solve my annoying problem: one server is much faster for certain tasks although on "shitty" hardware. I have tried many things to solve my issue - changed buffer/pool/cache/etc mysqld - changed server settings apache/php - changed various OS settings (sysctl) e.g. turned off IPV6 but havent figured it out. I have a development server (local) and life servers (data center) Used mainly for many different websites and one online training site. the development and life server in question run the same software setup: - CentOS Linux release 7.6.1810 - bind 32:9.9.4-74.el7_6.1 - Apache/2.4.6 (CentOS) - PHP 7.1.29 - mysqld Ver 5.7.26 - wordpress, woocommerce, wishlistmember, Sensei etc - software are all in the same stages of updates. - even many of the linux conf files are the same (/etc/host, bind, etc) - the databases are copies/identical Life server is a Poweredge M710,48GB,2xXeon L5630,LSI Raid1 SSD Dev server is a DIY, GIGABYTE MX31-BS0, 32GB, 1xXeon E3-1245,MDADM RAID0 1TB Seagate Spinners Clearly the development server is hardware wise way below the specs of the Dell but software wise they are identical (they get upgraded at the same time). During normal operations (i.e. display websites, online training courses etc) the DELL displays the websites faster although it sits 1000KM up north in a datacenter on a different network than the local server on the same network as my machine. Yet the DEV server outshines the DELL when creating a few large custom tables, ie the local server takes 5s while the DELL takes 15s (small tables), more for bigger tables. The task is based on: - level, member, course, group are all ID's - members can belong to a group, a level and can access many courses - the ID restricts what they can access and what they belong to. - a course for each member can have various stages of completion - using an API (wishlist member) that performs LOCAL calls when accessed locally I can get who belongs to what and make up my info I need, then use PHP to make up the table. - DB calls ARE LOCAL! Now when I try to create a table of members belonging to the same group level doing the same course with different stages of completion the DELL takes on average 3 times longer to complete the table (normally about 20 to 30 rows). I have put microtime() calls before and after certain calls, and it's visibly different: DEV Jul 04 04:57:26 UTC _members took 0.0005459785461425 ms Jul 04 04:57:26 UTC _members took 0.0005321502685546 ms LIFE Jul 04 05:00:36 UTC _members took 0.0014369487762451 ms Jul 04 05:00:36 UTC _members took 0.0013291835784912 ms If I do this 300+ times, the outcome is very different. So my questions: - How can it be that the DELL takes so much longer alltough on the far better hardware? - How can it be allthough everything (software/os/plugins) is the same? - This even happens if the DELL is on low load (i.e. middle of the night) and only serves a few requests. Same software, same config, same database, same amount of data in the database yet on better hardware it's slower? Any ideas anyone? -- Jobst Schmalenbach

Creating KVM-based VM with virt-manager and virt-install on C7

Hi folks, for learning purposes I create KVM-based VM with the virt-manager. Later I get rid of the VM and repeat the "process" again. When recreating the VM I always enter the same values into the wizard in virt-manager (i.e. I want to speicfy a given MAC). I'd like to "automate" this procedure, all of what I do in virt-manager for creating the new VM, I' d like to do it with a bash script using virt-install. I' wndering if it is possible to "record" the values when I enter them into virt-manager and extract those values for usage with virt-install? It's not clear to me when I enter a field in the wizard what is the corresponding parameter in virt-install. Regards, Meikel

using RedHat binary packages?

Hi folks, AFAIK CentOS uses RedHat's source RPMs for building the next CentOS release. I am not sure about the bootstrap procedure and the infra- structure packages, so lets put these corner cases aside. RedHat's "regular" binary and source packages are based on open source (GPL2, GPL3, Apache license, whatever). For building the binary RPMs other open source RPMs with compatible license conditions are used. My question is: Are RedHat's binary RPMs "poisoned" somehow, making it impossible for CentOS to redistribute RedHat's *binary* packages without going to jail? Install of CentOS 7.6 On Dell PowerEdge R830 Hangs

All, Seems like the latest CentOS 7.6 and I are not playing well together, these days. I'm attempting to use our pxeboot setup to install the latest CentOS 7 on a Dell PowerEdge R830. The install starts then gets to a certain point and hangs. That certain point is: FADT indicates ASPM is unsupported, using BIOS configuration Now I've tried to see where the Active Server Power Management setting is in the BIOS, but have had no luck whatsoever. Any thoughts or ideas?? Thanks. PEV

Also, have you looked in the BIOS to see what those settings are? mark Try updating the BIOS/UEFI image first. Dell has been notorious for requiring BIOS updates for things like video cards and microprocessor code updates. You may have to install a newer BIOS before you can get the OS on.

OT, hardware: new router and a USB winprinter

Well, the router I've had for some years now, that I had DD-WRT on, borked itself. Went out and bought a new one, an Asus RT-AC66U. Now, I've got this 11 yr old cute HP Laserjet... and it's a winprinter. With the version of the DD-WRT I had, all I had to do was send the magic M$ data to it, it would wake up, the lights on the printer telling me that it was installing that. New printer magically actually recognizes the printer... but when I try to send the data, nothing happens. If anyone can give me some ideas, feel free to do it offlist, as this is very OT. PS: I will NEVER touch DD-WRT again. It's an amateur project, in the worst sense of the word. When I was first putting it on, people on its general support mailing list talked about their "favorite builder" (there were several), and their "favorite builds". There were no formal releases, etc, etc. I went that way, because the OEM firmware "supported USB printers"... except, according to their tech support, "oh, not that printer". *sigh* Thanks in advance. mark

We recently installed CentOS 7 from DVD. Our install selection was the GNOME desktop option. yum update yielded about 465 megabytes of updates all of which were successful with no warnings. The multi media option was not chosen because KDE was listed. GNOME was not apparent in the software list for the multi media workstation install. Google searches led us to instructions for installing mplayer. The repo update appears to be successful as indicated below. Dependency resolution at the time of mplayer installation yielded twelve errors. Are there other packages that could be installed prior to another attempt at mplayer installation that might provide the missing items? Might these errors have been avoided by choosing the multi media workstation install? Disk Performance Issue

We have a very old Dell desk top machine that has been running CentOS 6 for the past five years. It received a new, 1 TB disk and additional memory before the OS installation. It has been the primary Linux machine in our smallest and most remote field office. It has been updated at least once a week and has all current dates installed. Boot-up this morning lasted about six times as long as usual. Disk access, as indicated by the disk activity light, is almost continuous and for extended periods of time when ever something is done that requires the disk. Everything observed happens whether or not the machine is connected to our network. All of our files appear to be accessible if one is patient. One theory put forward is that some application is running that uses up CPU and disk bandwidth. Another theory is that thereare disk errors, mostly corrected by EDCS features. We do not see any rogue applications and error logs show no disk issues. This is a mysterious issue that we hope to circumvent by putting a new disk and installing CentOS 7 from DVD. Our hope is that the current disk can be mounted externally on the new CentOS system using a USB to SATA adapter and that data can be moved off of the old disk. Issue with dvd/cdrom drive

Hi, I'm having an issue with my Thinkpad P70 laptop/workstation. This system is a dual boot, windows 10 pro and centos 7. I have not needed to use the cdrom until now, however the system does not see it in /dev. I know the cdrom works as I can use it in windows 10 and when initially installing centos 7, I installed from dvd media. I'm not sure what to check. I do not see anything related in dmesg. Vulnerabilities to bind-libs bind-utils - possible to remove these on webservers

I think the subject says it all. We don't run named. It seems there are chronic issues with bind. Can these packages be removed? We locally authenticate. I see this: Removing for dependencies: bind-utils ipa-client sssd sssd-ad sssd-ipa We shouldn't need any of that with local authentication (/etc passwd and /etc/shadow) right? Had a manager come by, to tell me one server seemed to be running slow, but nothing much was on it. Well, it turned out to be a user who was using Visual Studio on his Win10 laptop to edit files on the server. And VS used sftp to get to the files. Yeah, about that: ssh in about 4 times a second.... Things sped up with he killed that. Be warned. mark

Postgrey not working

Hi, I have a working installation of Postfix and Dovecot that works nicely. I've added SpamAssassin, which does a good job of flagging spam. Now I wanted to add greylisting to my server. I found that one of my users' workstation is, for some reason, running systemd-sleep. I cannot find, anywhere on the system. system-sleep.conf (or systemd-sleep.conf), nor do I find systemctl status system[d]-sleep. How can I turn this thing off, other than renaming /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-sleep? mark

Hi, folks, testing zfs. I'd created a zpoolz2, ran a large backup onto it. Then I pulled one drive (11-drive, one hot spare pool), and it resilvered with the hot spare. zpool status -x shows me state: DEGRADED status: One or more devices could not be used because the label is missing or invalid. NFSv4: Using fsid=0 but *not* exporting the root filesystem

Hi, I would like to use the NFSv4 ability to create a "root" filesystem with fsid=0, so that I don't have to refer to the whole path of the exported filesystem when I mount it. However I do *not* want this root filesystem to be mountable by any host. Is that possible and how? E.g Filesystem: /exports/data1 /exports/data2 /exports/data3 /etc/exports: /exports *(ro,no_subtree_check,fsid=0) /exports/data1 host1(rw) /exports/data2 host1(rw) /exports/data3 host2(rw) host1 and host2 can mount fileserver:/ and access any of the dataN directories at least read-only. That is unwanted. I'd like /exports/data1 and /exports/data2 to be exclusively accessible by host1 and /exports/data3 by host2. But I'd still like to be able to mount e.f. as fileserver:/data1 instead of fileserver:/exports/data1. I've search around a lot and I have found the question several times, but no solution yet. Hi, RedHat published an update for bind two weeks ago - it's fixed some bind vulnerabilities (https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2019:1294) There's a commit 'import bind-9.9.4-74.el7_6.1' on https://git.centos.org/rpms/bind/commits/c7 since 12 ago but http://mirror.centos.org/ still ships the old non-updated version of bind (bind-9.9.4-73.el7_6.x86_64.rpm) Couldn't find bind on cbs.centos.org but I'm not really familiar with the building / publishing process at CentOS. I'm in the process of upgrading to CentOS 7 on 22 machines. If CentOS 8 becomes available in say 6 weeks, I'll stop and wait for it. It's difficult upgrading the OS, DNS, and 389-DS and Oracle 12c - that's why I ask. Hi Guys Apologies in advance for the noise. I am interested in setting up my OWN mirrorlist like http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=7&arch=x86_64&repo=os&infra=stock where it pulls a few local mirrors, but mine would be statically set with 3 or 4 different location URL's Basically my plan here is, if the closest mirror I operate cannot be reached, it will try another mirror from a different geographic location I was wondering if anybody on-list might be able to provide some insight on how I can accomplish this? Does CentOS support aspell?

I haven't run CentOS on a machine of my own for several years; but my domain (NOT the address I post from) is hosted on a machine running CentOS. The list for the mailer I run recommends using aspell, which is not installed (according to rpm -q) on the remote host, as a spellchecker. Does anybody here know offhand if CentOS supports it? Delta RPMs (drpms) for CentOS-6 and CentOS-7

We are having issues with drpms on CentOS-6 i386 and x86_64 and on CentOS-7 x86_64. The technical issues sometimes cause us to have to rebuild all drpms over again .. and the time involved is very large. Also storing the drpms and moving them around takes up a lot of space and bandwidth. We would like to remove delta rpms (drpms) from our CentOS-6 and CentOS-7 repositories. But before we do , we would like a discussion on these lists to ensure this is not going to cause people major issues. So, begin the discussion, and we will address this again in about a month. Semi-OT question: os-prober is in CentOS, but I never see it running. I've got a server that's Ubuntu 18.04, and it seems to be running it every night, which confuses me - I can see no reason for that. Since ubuntu is o/t, feel free to email me offlist - the only thing I've found in some googling is to chmod -x /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober on the ubuntu system. repoview comparable alternative

It seems that in the context of EL8 the tool RepoView that creates static HTML pages out of a yum repository is obsolet because of the missing yum python modules (EL8 comes with dnf). Further more it seems also be abandoned [*] and I do not expect to appear in EPEL8. Does someone uses a similar tool to generate browseable repo HTML pages? We discovered safety hardware vulnerability in Samsung tablet computer model SM-T580 16GB SN: R52M20EG5WR – dangerous overheat of the tablet lithium-ion battery caused by short circuit to flash LED, which caused more likely by failed LED controlling hardware. We believe that similar design have other mobile computerized devices utilizing flash LED for digital camera. The computer in question has been in use for only three weeks. The temperature outside of the case was approximately 55C in open space. The LED was shining while the computer was power down. The battery discharged within approximately one hour. There is high degree of risk of overheating and potential fire and/or explosion related to the technology of lithium-ion batteries. In particular, if the device is packed inside of a luggage. Two Samsung companies in the US have been informed, but have not really proposed an investigation claiming high quality of the company products. We also informed TSA in three separate inquires (one to FAA), American Airlines and UK based The Registry news portal. However, considering that a lot of people in CentOS community use tablets and smartphones we decided to inform about existing risks caused by specific design of the hardware and may be firmware as well. UEFI boot manager sequence problems HP Envy

Morning all, I have a HP Envy dual boot system (Win8 for serious stuff, i.e. Train Sim and Flight Sim) and Centos 7 for everything else. In the past I've had the occasional problem where an update on the windows side has updated the UEFI boot sequence but using efibootmgr has always fixed it. On Friday I discovered that my HDD was failing so I tried using Clonezilla to move it on to a new SSD of the same size. Unfortunately the clone didn't work, failing half way through my main partition. Thankfully the Windows partitions and boot info cloned across so that side of the system worked. I then wiped all the Linux partitions and did a clean C7 install using the latest ISO, all went well, but when it reboot it went straight into Windows. Using F9 on reboot I chose CentOS Linux and the new system booted. Using efibootmgr I reset the boot sequence and all looked fine (see below). Unfortunately, when I then reboot it reverts to booting Windows. Using F9 to get back into Linux then shows that the boot sequence has reverted. This means that the updated sequence either was not stored properly, or something is resetting it. Legacy support in the BIOS is turned off as it should be, and the boot sequence in the BIOS only has a limited number of options. Diskless Centos & Cgroup config changes

Hi, I have OS 'image' that boots via PXE and mounts over NFS. (7.5.1804). I am wanting to explore allowing cgroup usage on this configuration. The root image is exported read-only over NFS and am using statetab & rwtab to allow some persistent parts of the filesystem as well as read/write where needed. I have tried setting /sys in the statetab and this causes the machine to fail, as I have tried /sys in the rwtab. The latter increases the boot time to a point which is not usable. Trying /sys/fs/cgroup in rwtab seems to improve boot time but also causes the machine not to complete booting. I had some more success using cgconfig.conf, I was able to mount the memory cgroup to a local disk (each node has a local temp disk) and manipulate this using cgcreate but the cpu would not mount in the same fashion; the error was: Error: cannot mount cpu to /var/tmp/cgroup/cpu: Device or resource busy So my question; in this particular environment, is how best to utilize cgroup if I want control over both cpu and mem? Is it possible with a read-only root image? Thanks,

upgrade to kernel 4.19.43 fail.

Hi all... I just upgraded to laatest kernel in experimental from 4.19.40 , and for my OpenCL app this now fails with this msg: amdgpu_device_initialize: DRM version is 2.50.0 but this driver is only compatible with 3.x.x. Booting back to 4.19.40 makes it work again. I have added a few files from amdgpu-pro package, to make openCL work here in centos7; but something must have changed in this new kernel for amdgpu support. As kernel 4.19.40 works fine, it is not a big issue here - just wanted to report it. Allan.

This often means that the root cause is something else and multilib version checking is just pointing out that there is a problem. Eg.: 1. You have an upgrade for libgpg-error which is missing some dependency that another package requires. Yum is trying to solve this by installing an older version of libgpg-error of the different architecture. If you exclude the bad architecture yum will tell you what the root cause is (which package requires what). You can try redoing the upgrade with --exclude libgpg-error.otherarch ... this should give you an error message showing the root cause of the problem. 2. You have multiple architectures of libgpg-error installed, but yum can only see an upgrade for one of those architectures. If you don't want/need both architectures anymore then you can remove the one with the missing update and everything will work. 3. You have duplicate versions of libgpg-error installed already. You can use "yum check" to get yum show these errors. ...you can also use --setopt=protected_multilib=false to remove this checking, however this is almost never the correct thing to do as something else is very likely to go wrong (often causing much more problems). Protected multilib versions: libgpg-error-1.13-1.el7.centos.x86_64 != libgpg-error-1.12-3.el7.i686 I don't know what it's complaining about, I have several i686 packages installed that yum thinks need the libgpg-error package. here's all the libgpg stuff installed: libgpg-error.i686 1.12-3.el7 @base libgpg-error.x86_64 1.12-3.el7 @anaconda libgpg-error-debuginfo.x86_64 1.12-3.el7 @base-debuginfo libgpg-error-devel.x86_64 1.12-3.el7 @base When I encountered this a couple weeks ago I finally excluded libgpg from the updates, hoping there was some mirror problem that would go away, but apparently not. I can't see any reason why having both i686 and x86_64 is a problem, I'm hoping someone here can enlighten me. thanks in advance! Firefox addons disabled - temporary fix

The currently available fix for Firefox doesn't work with ESR, but there's a temporary fix that works. At least, it's working for me: Go to about:config and set xpinstall.signatures.required to false. The Firefox folks say that a fix for ESR will be coming at some point, but at least this gets things working again in the short term. It's not clear to me if the fixed ESR (when available) will require a new Firefox rpm to be created and installed or if it's something that will just show up by magic and start working or if any steps will have to be taken to enable it. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

Hallo, has anyone a hint how to change all device-IDs in a cloned Centos-VM. I cloned a system 4 times with the vmware-converter but didn t realize that hardware-IDs etc. were not changed. Using a live-cd is possible. Thanks for hints Ralf

Older versions of samba that work with CentOS 7?

Hi. Are there any places I can download older versions of Samba working with CentOS 7? Reason: I have been upgrading all of my servers from 6.X to 7.X. This alone is a massive task for me as I am a one man band. Samba made massive changes not allowing NT style domains anymore in the 4.10 branch. If I can find older samba RPM's for CentOS 7 than I can finish all upgrades of the OS, then later upgrade samba once I am finished when I have more time. Bash completion thrown by quoted option args?

There was a thread about C7 bash completion back in August last year, but it doesn't have answers for this problem. Example: "yum install /path/to/local/package" works fine with tab completion to fill in the path and package bits. However, "yum --debuglevel="1" install ..." just gets stuck and doesn't offer anything. The only option is to type everything out, or type enough to use a wildcard. After more testing, I found that any option argument that is quoted breaks completion. Which in turn makes me think this is not even specific to yum but bash completion in general. Bug? Upstream bug?

system unresponsive

Ok, we used to get this occasionally on cluster nodes, and we just got it on a fileserver (very bad). The system is discovered to be unresponsive: it doesn't ping, and plugging a console in, you can see that it's not dead, but there nothing at all on the screen, nor does it respond to even <ctrl-alt-del>. The only answer is to power cycle it; it comes up fine. Nothing in /var/log/dmesg or /var/log/messages. No abrts I can find. sar tells me it went unredponsive between 18:10 and 10:20 yesterday. Note that there are no further entries in sar, either, for yesterday, after the event, and nothing till I power cycled it. Has anyone else seen this - I can't imagine it's only us - or have any thoughts? C 7, 7.6.1810 mark

Bypassing 'A stop job is running' when rebooting CentOS 7

I'm currently trying to reboot a CentOS 7.5 workstation (to complete an upgrade to 7.6), but it is 'stuck' while shutting down with 'A stop job is running for ...' - the counter initially gave a limit of '1min 30s' - but each time it reaches that limit, it just adds on ~90 seconds to the limit ... Currently the limit is '25min 33s' I'm in no hurry to have this workstation operational, but I guess at some point I will have to power cycle it ... Does anyone know how to bypass this? - or at least stop it increasing the limit each time it is reached? It does seems rather pointless to keep increasing the limit like this ...
