1) What exactly happens when I press the "reload audio drivers" button? I want a command-line analogue, so that I can do it remotely, via ssh (and no X forwarding). 2) How to manually set the order of sound cards and the default one, again using only command line, as I would do in the GUI of system-config-soundcard? 3) Why don't the settings made there stick? I have three to four sound devices (two pci and one or two usb, depending on what is plugged in), and on every reboot cards tend to get shuffled and the wrong one is typically the default. 3) Is there maybe a system-config-soundcard-tui or something equivalent which would make my life easier and make the first two questions obsolete? 4) Why there is no man page for system-config-soundcard? I would really appreciate some help with this. CentOS 5.3, if it matters. Best, :-) Marko

How to run command as apache?

Hello: I have a subversion repository set up in /usr/local/svn/MyProject. For security, I have that directory set to apache as the owner and group and all files are mode 700. I need to run a svnsync command as the apache user so it may write to the repository. I tried this command: su apache -c "/usr/bin/svnsync sync https://svn2.jammconsulting.com/svn/MyProject" But I get this message from the su command: This account is currently not available. I am guessing this happens because the apache account is set with no password and a nologin shell. How can I run a command as the apache user? Best mobile SSH client?

I'm up for a cell phone contract renewal and am considering upgrading my handset. I looked at some devices at my local AT&T store but nothing really jumped out at me. I'm particularly interested in a cell phone that has a reliable ssh client, with ssh-agent and public key authentication abilities. Those of you who administer systems remotely, what mobile ssh client do you recommend? What phone would you recommend?

Bash Script help...

Hi All, I need to write a script that I will manually start (or a cron job in future) but I need it to do a number of things in order one after another. How do i do that so everything gets dont as the steps depend on each other. Example: cd /system_backups/ tar cvf apache-conf.tar /etc/httpd/conf/* gzip -v9 apache-conf.tar tar cvf apache-data.tar /var/www/* gzip -v9 apache-data.tar then last step... tar cvf <current_date>-system_backup.tar <all> the gzip files above gzip -v9 <current_date>-system_backup.tar scp <current_date>-system_backup.tar.gz user@10.0.0.1:/. etc...etc.... My questions: 1. How do I execute each statement and make sure subsequent statements are not executed until the previous is done? 2. How do I error check so if a step fails the script stops? 3. Since I run an SMTP Server on this box can I e-mail myself from bash the nightly results? 4. when I want to run the scp to send over the file to another machine for safety, how can I have it know the password to the machine I am scp'ing to? My mind is going crazy sort of with the things that I could do to protect myself in case of a system failure and making restoring easier. Can anyone provide insight for me? -Jason

Adding an 'official' CentOS image to the Amazon EC2 (Electronic Compute Cloud)

I'm starting to use the EC2 cloud (as are others) and noticed that all the available CentOS images seem to be of dubious origin. I think it would further the reputation and popularity of CentOS if it were represented in an official way. In case people aren't aware, when you create an AWS (Amazon Web Services) account there's a management console that shows a list of available images. Of this list, some are published by Amazon, others are uploaded anonymously, or you can upload your own. Given the dubious nature of an anonymous image and a lack of an Amazon image for CentOS, I'm left in the third camp - creating/bundling/uploading my own. Luckily I have the required 64 bit hardware to generate a 64 bit image! Selfishly I'd love to just start up an existing image published by centos.org but one's not available. Interestingly one is available from Amazon for both Fedora and Windows. Jason

Installing xfce on CentOS 5.3?

I would like to install xfce from the "extras" repo - but when I run: yum groupinstall XFCE-4.4 I get: Warning: Group XFCE-4.4 does not exist. Also 'yum grouplist' appears to only show the base groups ... Is there anything else I have to do to install xfce? Thanks James Pearson

problem with updates

Using Centos 5.2 and the "Software Updater/Package Updater/pup", I winnowed the problem updates down to six packages: 1: Updated file packages available 2: Updated gcc43 packages available 3: Updated gcc packages available 4: Updated pam packages available 5: Updated redhat-logos packages available 6: Updated redhat-menus packages available It'd really help if there was a button on pup to deselect all updates (and let me click just a few updates back on). The problem is typically... Updated file packages available Component: pirut Summary: TBe8ae967a sqlitesack.py:94:_read_db_obj:TypeError: unsubscriptable object As a result, /usr/share/gdm/themes/TreeFlower/background.png is missing, and so I get an error message about it and the "default" login screen. OT: Photo Editor to reduce 272 photos to VGA at once

I returned from Bogotá and have a Folder with 272 photos that total 419.9 MB. I would like to email them to several people who were there for the concerts I attended. I have Picasa, gThumb (not really an Editor but I believe it can reduce the quality of photos) and The GIMP installed. Is there a way I can have a photo editor reduce all of them to VGA size, without doing that 272 times? The people who will receive them are using M$ Windoze. Also, they are in a folder and it doesn't seem possible to attach a folder in gmail. A good way to zip them up in one file that can be unzipped on Windoze boxes? TIA! P.S. Local yum mirror and repomd.xml

Hey, So, I'm having a minor issue. Today, I configured one of our CentOS systems to use our local mirror (mirror.clarkson.edu) for its repositories. After doing this, I ran a yum update and received the following warning in the output along with the updates available: Not using downloaded repomd.xml because it is older than what we have: Current : Thu May 7 14:41:57 2009 Downloaded: Tue Apr 28 05:04:32 2009 In order to get rid of this error, I ran "yum clean all" and then "yum update" again. This results in the warning no longer being present but also results in yum telling me there are no packages marked for update. Any thoughts on why this is occuring? I've posted my mirror configuration at the bottom of the page. stale dm-multipath mappings

Greetings, I've hit this exact 'bug': https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=491311 I need to remove the mappings manually. I assume this is done via 'multipath -F' followed by a 'multipath -v2' ? Has anyone experienced doing this on a production system? We can do it during hours of low activity, but we would prefer to keep the databases on this host online at the time. kghostview and xdg-open. Need to fix problem across whole system

In Centos 5.3, a bad problem has surfaced in user land. We want to use either Evince or Adobe acroread as the pdf view, but the update of kdegraphics has somehow screwed up these systems so that the odious, horrible, awful pdf viewer kghostview is used. It is what you get when you doubleclick on pdf files, it is what programs get when they try to use xdg-open framework. This happens even though xdg-open seems to think it is pointing at Adobe. $ xdg-mime query filetype manual.pdf application/pdf $ xdg-mime query default application/pdf AdobeReader.desktop I've had it happen before that users make mistakes and then the mime types are accidentally re-defined in the user accounts. I have not had it happen across all users accounts that something goes so wrong. How can I tell the Gnome mime system to always use evince for opening pdf, not kghostview? What's wrong with xdg-open? Ghostscript in 5.3

Ever since I updated to 5.3, I have been unable to convert any ps files to pdfs using the ps2pdf command. Apache and CF

Hi All, I have a CentoS 5.3 Xen Instance at Mosso. I need to run ColdFusion and I have in the past successfully made everything work, but not on Linux rather Windows. I just cannot get Apache and CF talking. I added mod_jrun22, When I try to serve a CF file, I am asked to download binary data. I added .cfm and .cfml to Directory Index for /var/www/html in httpd.conf and nothing still. I have been trying to get this working for days. If anyone has a bit of free time, I can pay about $25. (Sorry, trying to get launched so my llc can make money). If anyone would trade 'services' can offer copies of our peoducts when they go live or some CF dev. -Jason

Strange problem with filesystem changes reverting on reboot

Our sysadmin was doing midnight work on moving some hardware to new power outlets. We'd recently done a CentOS 5.3 install on one of those machines and then "yum install" with the centosplus kernel and some rpmforge packages. It had been up and running fine for at least two weeks in that configuration. He sent this message: On reboot the root file system seems to have reverted to the previous startup -- no CentOS plus, no Dag repository info in /etc/yum.repos.d, no xfs, and therefore no /var/lib/mysql. This is at least the second time we've experienced this phenomenon ... suffice to say I am really really suspicious about ext3 now. The previous time this occurred was quite some time ago, probably soon after the CentOS 5.1 release -- we'd written it off as pilot error of some kind. The root is not an LVM, but it is on a software RAID -- my suspicion leans more toward a RAID issue than ext3. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

SSH problems - command not found

Hi All, I have a strange problem with ssh on CentOS 5.3: 1. I make a ssh connection from computer X to Y => OK 2. When i try to conect from Y to Z i receive a strange message: -bash: ssh: command not found (normal and root user) #which sshd /usr/sbin/sshd The sshd daemon it's on (see nr.1) So connection to Y it's OK, but from Y to another computer don't. Even back to X don't work Any advice? Thank you! P.S - sorry for my bad english

Hi, I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem with an application, and I need the debuginfo RPMs for gcc. (The symbols for libstdc++ are in there.) I recently upgraded one machine to CentOS 5.3, and this installed gcc-4.1.2-44.el5. Rosewill RSV-S8 Storage Enclosure Support

I'm trying to get RSV-S8 working with Citrix XenServer 5 update 3 (which I believe runs CentOS 5.something). I have the Rosewill card that comes with it in there (sil3132 based). It's seeing the card, and seeing all my drives. I fdisk the drives and I can create the partitions, but I am unable to set up either software raid or create filesystems. I keep getting errors saying that the volumes are in use (although they do not appear to be mounted anywhere). # mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdc1 mke2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006) /dev/sdc1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! # mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdb1: Device or resource busy mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdc1: Device or resource busy mdadm: create aborted Am I doing something wrong or is it possibly an issue with the driver? I have an ASUS EeePC 701 (with 2GB of RAM and an 8 GB card), on which I've installed CentOS on the hard-drive-plus-card. But it can't even use my eth0. Some one on a local LUG, where I had mentioned that other OSs did fine with all the same exact hardware, suggested that CentOS, being designed for stability rather than the bleeding edge, likely lacks drivers; so I need to get some. Hmmm "This will wipe your drive." normally means what it says it wipes your drive to be honest if it was me then I would skip centos and go for the uhuntu, it's designed for the netbook and from what I hear i runs like the clappers on the netbook. GFS and Small Files

Hi all, We are running CentOS 5.2 64bit as our file server. Currently, we used GFS (with CLVM underneath it) as our filesystem (for our multiple 2TB SAN volume exports) since we plan to add more file servers (serving the same contents) later on. The issue we are facing at the moment is we found out that command such as 'ls' gives a very slow response.(e.g 3-4minutes for the outputs of ls to be printed out, or in certain cases, 20minutes or so) This is completely true especially in directories containing "large number" of small files (e.g 90000+ of 1-4kb files). The thing is, most of system users are generating these small files frequently as part of their workflow. We tried emulating the same scenario (90000+ of small files) on a ext3 partition and it gives almost the same result. I believe most of the CLVM/GFS settings done are using the defaults parameters. Additionally, we would prefer to stick to GFS (or at least ext3) as it is part of CentOS / RHEL distribution rather than changing into other small-files 'friendly' filesystems (such as XFS, ReiserFS). I'm exploring whether is there anyway we can tune the GFS parameters to make the system more responsive? I have read that we can apply 'dir_index' option to ext3 partition to speedup things, but I'm not so sure about GFS. Hi All, I am working on setting up Postfix and I have a few questions: 1. mynetworks = Do I put my public static IP here? So I am hosting at another provider on my own dedicated hardware. Do I put that machines IP or the IP of my apartment where I want to access from? Second, do I have to know the Ip information for my BlackBerry to work as well? 2. relaying: Obviously I dont want to be an open relay, but I do what to send mail from my apartment and from my Blackberry. apache slow on lan transfers?

When I download a file from apache on the lan (gigabit lan), I only get 3-4mbps of download speed, opposed to accessing the file via FTP or SMB which results in 500+ mbps of transfer speed. As far as I know, I'm running the stock apache (httpd) that is distributed with centos 5.3, and haven't changed anything in the config file with the exception of setting up various virtual directories. I'm hoping someone can give me pointers on what I need to search for to research this problem. Apache + slow + lan isn't really getting me anywhere. The apache process itself on the server doesn't even register 1% of cpu usage, and iowait is 0% All suggestions are appreciated, Gordon

Rsync/SSH automation problem?

Hi All, I have a win2k3 server that its backing up to a CentOS 5.3 server. On the Win2k3 machine I plan to have rsync back up nightly to the CentOS server through ssh. The command I am using is as follows: rsync -vrPtz -e ssh myuser@myserver:/remote/backup/folder/ /local/backup/folder/ This all works great for the inital test except its prompts me for a password for "myuser" (as you would except) but how can I embed the password for ssh into the command line? Or can I not? Is the following some how possible: rsync -vrPtz -e ssh myuser@myserver mypassword /remote/backup/folder/ /local/backup/folder/ Or something like that? I can't find anything that says it is possible so its probably isn't but I know that some of you out there have far superior searching skills than I or hopefully, you might already know? Assuming this isn't possible as I've got that gut feeling it won't be, does anyone else have a better idea? Hi All, My quest is going slowly but surely and I am learning a lot. I use ColdFusion. I installed in on My CentOS 5.3 instance and all was well. I added: DirectoryIndex index.html index.html.var index.php index.cfm index.cfml to httpd.conf and restarted. I put an index.cfm page in /var/www/html and removed the standard index.html and I can see when I hit my IP it works. I then created virtual hosts for a few coldfusion websites in httpd.conf and added the directories to /var/www/html One thing I notice is the owner/group is 501 and games like: drwxr-xr-x 5 501 games 4096 Apr 25 23:57 www_sheldony_com Is this normal? I just did a simply mkdir statement. Did I screw something up? And when I try to hit an index.cfm page Firefox prompts me to download binary data. When I try to hit the CF Administrator I get the same 'binary' data file download. I am running CF on port 80 as I need to. Inotify or equivalent

I installed inotify and incrond to watch a directory and set the job as '/mnt/dir IN_ATTRIB chmod 0660 $@/$#' which worked very well except that as expected, IN_ATTRIB is to broad of a watch class as it caused an enormous amount of contention with the filemonitor and/or db server and the client side app was less than happy. Not to mention top showed it working away like mad... Is there any way to look for permission changes only, or something else that might work? Thanks! jlc

Server test suite

Hi, I have an interest in software that will allow me to define test suites for servers. We have several thousand Linux systems, and after we build or rebuild each one, we have a checklist. I am trying to automate this checklist, and ideally have it run against all of our servers on a regular basis and report inconsistencies. Is anyone aware of open-source software that will do this, or do I need to write my own? --Russell

Defaults of CentOS Install not working with SELinux

Following a hard drive corruption I have reinstalled the latest version of CentOS and all current patch files. For most applications I selected the default options. By doing this I expected that the packages would play nice with one another and I could customize as necessary. Setting SELinux to enforce I encountered all sorts of problems - but most were resolvable, save for Dovecot, Procmail (for spamc), and an odd one with Apache. Given that these were all installed with the CentOS install defaults, I can't believe I am the only one with these issues but finding a solution has not been self evident. Hoping someone here can help. For Dovecot I get the following: SELinux is preventing dovecot (dovecot_t) "create" to <Unknown> (dovecot_t). For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l e1b070ab-586a-4c5a-befe-b6a46b9ab992 For procmail I get the following: SELinux is preventing procmail (procmail_t) "execute" to ./spamc (spamc_exec_t). For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l 0a554689-4948-4edf-9964-dddbfe6a2492 SELinux is preventing sh (procmail_t) "read" to ./spamc (spamc_exec_t). For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l 1f1ebd83-412d-4e93-a36f-6f3d34c663df For Apache it's even more strange - When started I get: Syntax error on line 283 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf DocumentRoot must be directory But it is a directory, has the correct permissions and I have even run chcon -R -h -t httpd_sys_content_t /web/www/ in an effort to correct the problem. I run a virtual server too, and in trying to find a fix for this that may be a problem - but first things first. All the other issues I had I could resolve when I ran the specified "sealert" tag and followed the suggested instructions - but those above don't budge. When I go to the fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-fq- fc5 site to take on making a local policy module I am quickly getting lost . The option to simply disable SElinux with respect to Apache, Dovecote or anything else is suggested - but not something I see in the GUI window, and I have not figured out how to do it from the command line. Again, because these are default packages, I hope that someone else knows how to resolve these. Directory and File Perms

I have a directory shared out via Samba for Quickbooks and seem to have some issues with permissions. The directory being shared is a subdirectory in an ext3 partition being mounted with the acl option. It has been setup as follows: chown root:DOMAIN\AD_Group /mnt/Intuit_Data/ chmod 2770 /mnt/Intuit_Data/ And the Samba share config is has: create mask = 0660 directory mask = 0770 So when a user creates a file from their Windows box through Explorer or any other app, it gets perms as you might expect: -rw-rw---- 1 Domain+jcasale DOMAIN+AD_Group 0 Apr 29 14:24 test.txt and it can be deleted by anyone. Problem is QB uses gamin and this file monitoring daemon runs as root and all sorts of changes take place as you work with the data, from creating the company file to editing it in QB, it ends up slowly changing to 0400? We are looking ofr a tool to that measure packet loss. we have servers in two IDC's bothin the US and we are trying to download a 2gb file from the internet. Some server are able to download the file at a higher b/w rate in one IDC ...while servers at he the other IDC download the same file at a lowe b/w rate . Is ther any tool to measure packet losses. I ran: yum install vnc vnc-server then: vncserver (and set desktop viewing password) But I cannot connect. How do I add 5900 to the centos firewall? How do I edit the conf file? php-mcrypt from c5-testing is the wrong version

Hello all, I am using the c5-testing repo to fetch PHP 5.2.6 and related libraries, required for the LAMP apps that I want to use. php-mcrypt still seems to come from the extras repo and is version 5.1.6 and the php binary doesn't load this module. Has anyone seen output like this before? Notice on my /dev/md0 That it reports 100% used, but also 5.3 Gb available. Hi, I am creating CentOS install usb keys and, apart from a few problems, it mostly works... 1. OT: My server HP does not seem to want to boot on it if I set the write protection on. 2. Anaconda tries to fetch the ks.cfg too early... It detects sda, then detects the RAID adapter, then re-detects sda with a "waiting for device to settle before scanning". Anaconda tries to access the ks.cfg file in the middle of this waiting. If, once the detection is over (just 2-3 seconds later), I retry, it works. 3. Error message "cannot mount read/write, will mount read-only" (I like to write protect) 4. OT: fs corruption ont he USB keys... I copy the iso file on the key (no error message), then compare it to the original and some random differences appear. I noticed in the logs: "ext2_new_block: Allocating block in system zone - block = 65536" "ext2_free_blocks: bit already cleared for block 88678" "ext2_free_blocks: Freeing blocks not in datazone - block = 3003818537, count = 1" Any idea how to fix 2. and 3. ? Update notification

CentOS 5.3 New updates available used to be flagged in the (Gnome) desktop notification area, but I don't get them any longer. What could be the problem? yum-updatesd is set up with the default configuration (dbus), and on the machines I changed the notification to email, I do indeed receive these emails.

Dell mirror raid boot problems

Everyone, I was recently given a Dell raid 386 server that had drives that had gone bad. I replaced the drives with a couple terrabyte sata Seagate drives, and set up the bios for a mirrored raid configuration. I was able to install Centos 5.2 without difficulty, but when it was time to perform the 1st boot it went to grub instead of booting off of one of the mirrored drives. I could not figure out how to boot through grub, so I changed the bios to look at both drives unmirrored. At that point I was able to boot to one of the drives, and the second drive was not mounted. The raid logic is within the bios and mother board of the Dell machine. Can any of you point me to some literature about making this system work as a mirrored raid system. Thanks, -- Greg Ennis

Wake On LAN

Hey Listees I can not work out how to get my Dell NF500 III server to use wake on LAN using the on board Broadcom NetExtreme II BCM5708 NIC card? I'm running Cent OS 5.3 final (i386). Basically, If I had windows server 2k3 installed I know that the cards & mobo etc support WOL I would just have to tick a little box under the NIC card properties saying "allow wake on LAN" (or words to that affect). How can I enable WOL for my NIC card? I have two identical servers so I have tried putting one to sleep (via either setting the hibernate time down to 5 mins and waiting for it to time out and hibernate or by running the following as root: echo shutdown > /sys/power/disk; echo disk > /sys/power/state) and waking it up with ether-wake and WOL (an rpm package) but neither worked, also with a windows WOL client from a windows server which I know works as it is regularly in use but the system didn't come up. The light is glowing green on the mobo just next to the two on board NIC's (both are the same BCM5708's); the light is on but nobodies home? What setting might I be missing within CentOS its self to keep the cards alive when the power is out? Any help is greatly appreciated. USB device not connected (CentOS 5.3)

I just tried this with CentOS 5.3 as well, and got exactly the same symptoms and dmesg output. (As a point of comparison, Ubunu 8.04 on my work laptop is able to access the drive.) Obviously "not detected" is a misapprehension, though I'm puzzled why "lsusb" doesn't show it. USB device not detected (CentOS 4.7)

I recently purchased an I/O Magic USB enclosure for 3.5" IDE hard drive. Has anyone else used one of these? It works fine with Windows, except of course that Windows can't read the ext2 partitions on the disk I put into the enclosure. CentOS4 can't find the device, much less access the drive -- it doesn't show up in "lsusb" output, although the active light on the enclosure is on solid. I have other USB external drives (Maxtor OneTouch and WD MyBook) that work with CentOS4. Suggestions appreciated.

Package Updater problems

Hello! I'm afraid that I don't understand redhat's bugzilla -- there's an approx 10-character wide box for reporting the bug and it always claims that that's not a bug. I'm sure I'm missing something. Anyway, here's the problems: Using Centos 5.2 and the "Software Updater/Package Updater/pup", I winnowed the problem updates down to six packages: 1: Updated file packages available 2: Updated gcc43 packages available 3: Updated gcc packages available 4: Updated pam packages available 5: Updated redhat-logos packages available 6: Updated redhat-menus packages available I set it up so that the package updater should only try to handle one update, and I repeated this six times, once per problem update. Is there a reason why after a software raid install (from kickstart) that md1 is always unclean. md0 seems fine. boot screen says md1 is dirty and cat /proc/mdstat show md1 as being rebuilt. Any ideas? Unless you have a very high performance disk controller/drives, you'll usually find that it cannot keep up with initial format of the array, then the subsequent dumping of data to it during installation. Upon reboot, it'll simply restart the sync process and finish happily. I've seen this on nearly every md RAID1 system I install on. --Tim

Reset audio controller w/o rebooting?

As I mentioned on a thread about flash-plugin a few days ago, I'm having trouble with my sound device getting "stuck" and thereby causing problems for anything that accesses it, like video playback. Rebooting the machine "fixes" it for a while, but it's unpredictable for how long -- sometimes months go by without it recurring, sometimes it happens every couple of days. Right now I'm in one of the latter phases. Any suggestions on how I could reset the controller without having to reboot? (Or suggestions for where else I might ask this question?) Port Forwarding woes

I'm having some port forwarding issues issues with iptables. We are using iptables as a firewall with 2 nics and on ip alias. I'm trying to port forward on the alias ip eth0 = 65.x.x.1 eth0:1 = 65.x.x.2 eth1 = 192.168.x.x I'm wanting to forward certain ports(80,5071...etc) that makes request on eth0:1 IP 65.x.x.2 to forward to internal IP 192.168.x.x. I have setup the following rules but I must be doing something wrong. iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 -d 65.x.x.2 --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.x.x:80 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 -d 65.x.x.2 --dport 5071 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.x.x:5071 iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -i eth0 -d 192.168.x.x --dport 80 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -i eth0 -d 192.168.x.x --dport 5071 -j ACCEPT Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a Cisco 6509 switch that I'm monitoring with SNMP from a CentOS5 machine. SNMP polls are the only access I have to this device, we are not allowed to log on via telnet. How can I find out which port on the switch a particular server is connected to? I was hoping that this is somehow possible using the mac address and the data gathered from snmpwalk/snmpget requests but I'm not having much luck. How would you tackle this problem?

Hi all I am using cents 5.3 on a gigabyte motherboard MA78GM-US2H. When installing centos using kickstart I get prompted to load a driver. I select the ata_piix driver and everything continues as normal. Is there a way in kickstart or the boot command prompt line to specify loading the ata_piix module automatically? Why isnt the kernel loading it automatically? I dont recall having to ever do that before in 5.2 Thanks, Jerry

However i got the impression it was something in the same category like tinyca or pyca. Perhaps it is based on the code of RHCS, and all documentation is just some wiki pages. Bit different from the docu from RHCS-7.3 (Their admin guide is over 600 pages) I was asked to make a proposal for an (large) opensource CA/RA/ocsp/.... If selected, i make them order an official package with support from RH. But i would like to have some hands-on experience before, and not get all my information from paper. OpenCA has also quite some nice docu (but doesn't live up to it), and used to be included in some distro's. eth0 killed when adding virtual interface and multiple NICs are present

I have a strange problem on one machine where eth0 gets killed when I add a virtual interface. It's got something to do with the NIC ordering or with the xen network script having a problem with multiple NICs and virtual interfaces. I could need some help/comments on this. Some history: I added a NIC (chip identifies as Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet) to a Dell R200 server. CentOS 5.3 with Xen 3.3.1 (gitco repo). eth0 and eth1 are the built-in NICs, this is then eth2 (or it should be). Works. Everything is fine until I add a virtual interface to eth0 and reboot. I can add eth0:1 at runtime just fine. But if I let it stay in network-scripts and boot the whole eth0 is killed (doesn't show up in ifconfig and doesn't work). A network restart brings it up as if nothing is wrong. I first thought it might have something to do with the fact that eth0 is actually a bridge on Xen > 3.2 and tried the same config on another machine and there it works. It's not the exact same xen version, not 64bit and it's got only 1 NIC. So there are differences, but it seems to rule out the bridge as a cause. I then checked the logs more thoroughly and found that CentOS changes the NIC initialization order at boot-time. Without the third NIC it's eth0=NIC1 and eth1=NIC2 (as shown on the chassis). But with the third NIC it's most often that one that goes first. Here's a typical excerpt from messages. tigon/tg3 is the driver for the internal NICs which normally were on eth0 and eth1. Well, it seems this wasn't a problem until I added a virtual interface to eth0. When the eth interfaces are brought up the system seems to reenumerate the eth numbering according to the HWADDR matches and thus eth0=NIC1 and so on. As soon as I add a virtual interface to eth0 this breaks and all of eth0 is killed. At least that's what I figure. So, the next obvious question is: How can I set a fixed order, so that NIC1 is always brought up first as eth0? I'm not sure if this would fix it, though. I have done too few reboots yet, but it seems that at least once I got the "correct" initialization order but eth0 got killed, anyway. So, it might not be the order but still something in the Xen script which happens only when multiple NICs are present and a virtual interface is added. Any thoughts so far?
