I used xview in 5.2 from package xloadimage. This doesnt seem to be present in 5.3 Has it moved to a different package? yum provides "*/xview" didnt return anything. Jerry

Centos Forum is down??

Hi, I have joined the Centos forum a few days ago and still do not have my activation email. My user name and email address is in there but I cannot do anything until I activate. I have left a message with the webmaster and I have requested a lost password, but get nothing. I have checked all my email filters, spam boxes etc., and yet nothing. I am getting up to 100 emails a day at that address. Any ideas how I can get this up? Many thanks. oz :-)

Shadow passwords NOT md5'ed ?

Hello, I have a very weird problem on a CentOS 5.2 system. A few months ago, encrypted passwords in the shadow file were MD5'ed - allowing for long passwords, rather than only 8 characters max. Today, passwords are 3DES'ed only. No way to find how the system reverted to DES-encrypting. But what's more bothersome is we cannot get the system to go the MD5 way again, despite all our best efforts. Authconfig says this : pam_unix is always enabled shadow passwords are enabled password hashing algorithm is md5 So... where to look ? Tia, -- FdL

X session lockup (CentOS 4.7)

I just had a very odd incident with my session locking up, so I thought I'd describe it to see if it rings any bells with anyone. Background: I shut down my machine last night for Earth Hour, so the last thing I did before logging out was exit Firefox3, telling it to save my open tab state. When I turned the system back on and started FF3 again, it installed new versions of three plugins (I believe NoScript and Elasticfox but I don't recall the third) and then restored the session as expected. Not related to FF, but I also started up the "filelight" filesystem visualization app, which I don't normally have running, and it was still up on a different desktop while all the following was happening. This morning I opened a new FF3 window to browse CNN. I opened tabs on five or six stories from the front page and then went to read through them, closing each tab as I finished each story. (There were six other tabs open in the first FF window, so no more than 12-14 tabs in two windows total.) After closing the second such tab FF began responding very slowly, even to simply scrolling the window, and eventually stopped responding entirely (wouldn't even redraw when I dragged windows around). I popped up an xterm and ran "strace" on FF to see if I could find the problem, and lo and behold as long as strace was running FF recovered and responded fine, but when I stopped tracing it froze again. Unfortunately I lost the trace output because of what happened next, but I do recall that it was accessing /etc/localtime repeatedly and very frequently. I left strace running and went back to FF, hoping to see the tail of the trace at the moment FF locked up again. However, the next time FF appeared to be frozen I found that not just FF but the entire Gnome session was stuck. I was able to move the mouse and to Alt-F2 into a text console window, but nothing else responded. I went back and forth a few times between the text console and the X console attempting to diagnose (including killing the strace and sending a CONT signal to FF, because "ps" said FF was in stopped ("T") state), but after a few passes at that even Alt-F2 stopped working. Fortunately I have another computer here, so I ssh'd in and ran "killall -1 firefox-bin". This woke things up to the point that one of the pending Alt-F2 keystrokes was seen and the text console came up, but although I could then switch consoles again, nothing else in the X session was responding. I finally HUP'd gnome-session (which stopped everything else; I checked "ps" to make sure nothing that had been associated with that session was still running) and I have now logged in again and everything seems fine. FF restarted and restored the session from the time I killed it, and an strace of it now doesn't show any accesses to /etc/localtime at all. I find this all especially strange because the whole system had been restarted less than 12 hours before.

I found reason, why update wont go. I have installed much newer glibc, than what comes with 5.3. I needed that, because of couple radioamateur progs. Now have to think, how do I downgrade glibc. If I try remove, there's over 600 pagages, which have to remove and that's not good. Hmm... Jarmo

what requires lm_sensors?

I found that lm_sensors got installed because of a dependency on my first Xen VM that I updated to 5.3. lm_sensors doesn't make sense in a VM. I thought, ok let's check after the update who wants it. However: rpm -q --whatrequires lm_sensors no package requires lm_sensors (same for --triggeredby with lm_sensors or the packages below) Trying to remove lm_sensors reveals these packages: Removing: lm_sensors i386 2.10.7-4.el5 installed 1.8 M Removing for dependencies: cacti noarch 0.8.7d-1.el5.rf installed 5.1 M net-snmp i386 1:5.3.2.2-5.el5 installed 2.8 M net-snmp-utils i386 1:5.3.2.2-5.el5 installed 342 k php-snmp i386 5.1.6-23.el5 installed 24 k But trying to remove any of them doesn't show a dependency on lm_sensors. xen thinks guests exist but not show in list

Hello: I tried to unsuccessfully install a guest on xen. It failed when it tried to connect to the display since I installed the OS without a graphical environment. When I do an xm list, I do not see the guest, but if I try to do virt-install with the same guest name, it tells me the domain already exists. I tried xm delete on the domain but that also tells me the domain does not exist. Any ideas? Having trouble installing flash player on centos 5.3 desktop machine

Hi, I'm having trouble getting the flash player installed onto my centos desktop. When i go to the adobe site, I click on the YUM for Linux version, then install it, and PC says "/tmp/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch-1.rpm is already installed" - but it's not working. So then tried downloading the .tar.gz for linux version, and PC asks me which program to open to install it, and i don't have a clue. Then I try downloading the .rpm version for linux, and my pc says "/tmp/flash-plugin-10.0.22.87-release.i386.rpm is already installed", but it's still not working. What am I doing wrong? company exchange server & exim best practices.

Hi all, I hope this isn't too OT, but since I use a CentOS5.2 + Exim mail server (which is hosted in one of our data centres) I don't think it should be. On of our clients use an MS Exchange 2003 SBS server, with exchange for their internal email. We provide them with a domain, ADSL (which uses dynamic DNS) and POP3 email. They don't have an spam filter program on the exchange server itself due to costs, so I have setup each user on the Exim server, which runs ASSPX for anti-virus / spam filter / etc. Then I setup the SBS 2003 server to pull the email via POP3, but this doesn't seem to work too well, cause the exchange server doesn't always download the POP3 email, and then the users often sit without email until I go there to manually download the mail again. I have tried changing the MX record to point to their DynDNS address, and it works well, but then they get a lot of spam. And the cost of a server-side spam solution is just too expensive, and they also pay for the bandwidth uses when spam comes in. So, I moved their MX record back to the Linux server. But now I sit with the problem of the POP3 connector failing from time to time. So, I would like to know, is there a way to "push" (not forward) mail from the Linux server, after it has arrived and spam been blocked, to another domain, but with the same email address? i.e. the domain in question is attorneys.co.za and I've setup attorneys.dyndns.net as the dynamic domain, but the exchange serves email for attorneys.co.za Forwarding email doesn't work, since there's no such user as bob(a)attorneys.dyndns.net, but rather bob(a)attorneys.co.za. -- Kind Regards Rudi Ahlers

Apache SSL key pass phrase question

I just set up a secure server. Followed the godaddy instructions for key generation/installation - and the server wanted my pass phrase to start. When I started developing I followed instructions for a self signed cert and everything went dandy. Anyway - after a little googling and an uneasy feeling that I messed up and godaddy might charge me a fee to resubmit for a new cert, I found the following solution - openssl rsa -in secure.shastaherps.key.old -out secure.shastaherps.key After running that and entering my pass phrase, no pass phrase is required to start the server and it seems like the browsers don't complain, so I think I'm set, but I thought I'd verify that all really is well and that doing that isn't going to cause any issues. If I understand it correctly, the phrase was needed when Apache starts in order to decrypt the key, and all I did above was decrypt the key so that apache doesn't have to, correct?

warning for nis users and 5.3 upgrade

i think that previous versions did this as well, but for sure the newest ypserv in 5.3 replaces /var/yp/Makefile with a new copy. needless to say if you've made any changes to that file, you will not be happy. we had a couple hours of phone calls after passwords stopped working. the original file is save as Makefile.rpmsave, so recovery of the file is straightforward. the issue has been flagged upstream and it sounds like it should be fixed before any new updates to ypserv are made. /etc/ypserv.conf is another file that can get overwritten.

Newby- New install forgot Login - pwd

Hi, I have just spent a whole day installing Centos 5.3 on an old machine and now as I take disc 4 out and reboot, I get the first black screen with Login and Password. I can remember being asked for one Login and pwd early in the install but chose not to use one, then it asked what the box is going to be called and I said Linux... (I think). How in earth can I get myself out of this?? Please!! oz :-(

clamav and selinux

after cleaning up a bunch or selinux alerts, I update and wham, clamav/clamd/clamav-db make me assert contexts again to /var/clamav like... chcon -t clamd_t clamav -R which temporarily solves the problem but it would be better if it were policy and not file contexts. Kickstart regression

The 5.3 upgrade broke the kickstart procedures for my xen virtual machines. They are installed via http. 1. The installer sets up the timezone interactively even though it is specified in the kickstart file. Not a big deal, though. 2. The installer hangs unpredictably when installing selinux-policy-targeted-2.4.6-203.el5.noarch.rpm. Performing a dozen or so installs, sometimes the rpm installs just fine, sometimes the installation takes 10 minutes, sometimes the installer just seems to hang and I kill virt-install after half an hour. An nfs kickstart install of a "real" machine does not exhibit this problem. Problem with python in 5.3 update?

I am trying to update a host from 5.2 to 5.3 via yum in sections (yum update a\* b\* etc.). Memory Leak with stock Squirrelmail, PHP, mysql, apache since 5.3

Hi list, We are experiencing a memory leak on our SquirrelMail server since the 5.3 update. The server is fully updated, only stock rpms. The httpd processes are eating all the memory and after swapping like hell, the server became unresponsive and we must hard-reboot it. The server is not that much loaded (max 10-15 concurrent users but with tons of mail in their inbox). Configuration's speaking, nothing was changed before and after the update. Is there someone else experiencing the same thing ? How can I search deeper the origin of the leak ? CMAN: Cluster membership rejected

I just discovered that my spam filters are not being properly executed in CentOS 5.3 because when procmail attempts to invoke spamc. I have spamd running properly, and can invoke spamassassin and spamc from the bash prompt manually without any issues, however procmail fails with "permission denied" then bails. I am booting 5.3 on an a770 biostar motherboard THe machine boots, I get the prompt from the DVD I hit return and the screen says kernel alive but it never gets past that. suggestions on other packages

Hi all - Since upstream patches the stock 2.6.18 kernel into something that is not 2.6.18 (for the rest of the world) I am having issues trying to compile some packages like v4l (latest is needed for a different project). When compiling packages like v4l that a doing conditionals based on kernel number - but - header files are messing other things up... is there some great trick to getting things to compile or behave nicely? What do others do in this circumstance? Note: If I did compile a kernel (2.6.17.10 for example) v4l works fine. however then I am not getting kernel updates with releases etc... Thanks, Jerry

You can control I/O bandwidth of your disks easily without hassle, because I've made RPM binary packages of dm-ioband and dm-ioband-config available at http://people.valinux.co.jp/~ryov/dm-ioband/binary.html The RPM binary packages are for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x and CentOS 5.x. They were tested on CentOS 5.3 and will also work on other 5.x versions. The dm-ioband-config package provides a configuration file and an init script to make it easy to assign bandwidth to LVM logical volumes. As far as home networks, I found that when I was running NAT on Linux (RH8 through FC2 days) - bt really screwed up my home network. However, when using hardware routers, even the cheap consumer kind (Linksys) the home network is fine. I think bt is very hard on software routing.

Centos 5.3 - NetworkManager applet

So far I have upgraded 2 test laptops (no big servers or this, my main laptop). I am running from local repos. The OS repo is from downloading the isos and extracting them. The Update repo I get with an rsync command. On both laptops, the update ends with a dialog panel (oh, I am using gnome): The NetworkManager applet caould not find some required resources. It cannot continue. I don't see anything in /var/log/messages that might shed light on this. On both these systems, I have the NetworkManager deamon disabled. I was able to start it in a terminal window with the services command and it seems to have worked; I see the icon on the system tray. Meanwhile, going through messages I see a message at the end of the bootup about nm-system-settings about loading plugin ifcfg-rh. First it parses ifcfg-lo and then notifies that it is ignoring the loopback device config. It then goes on to read ifcfg-eth0 (which is set for ONBOOT=no, so nothing more happens). So is this dialog a 'bug' or just an artifact of upgrading from 5.2 to 5.3?

Hello, Just did yum update. There were numerous packages to be updated. I get this is the newest release of Centos. The update bombed stating I need nss-3.12.2.0-2.el5. I did a rpm -q nss and nss-3.12.2.0-4.el5 is install in Cento 5.2. What's up with that? TIA

EXT4 root fails for kickstart

Hi All, For those testing EXT4 I seem to have found an issue with anaconda where by if you specify EXT4 fstype in your kickstart file it will not install and complains that if needs another 250MB of disk space. I've tried with my kickstart set for 10G for root at ext3 and it works fine. 10,15 and 20GB with EXT4 all fail. BTW: can't put /boot on it either. Just a heads up for all. ;) -- James A. Hello I've configured acpid on my laptop to make the powerbutton hibernate the laptop. Two sets of Heartbeat HTTPD clusters on same subnet

Hi all, I am new to Hearbeat so please be kind :) I also posted this on Linux-HA lists with no responses so I posted it here. I have successfully configure two machines to use heartbeat to cluster httpd. The two nodes are called etk-1 and etk-2. I am trying to configure another two machines to act as a separate cluster (on the same IP subnet). These two nodes are called radu-1 and radu-2. Obviously being a broadcast protocol radu-1 and radu-2 get these messages from etk-1 and I can't seem to get radu-1 and radu-2 to cluster (mostly probably because they are not getting the messages from the right nodes). Should I just change the name of the test, if I do that I get heaps of WARNING log messages. Is it possible to have two sets of clusters in the one IP subnet? I ran into the same problem when I attempted to "yum update" my workstation last night. I worked around it using the old old "rpm dependency hell" technique of retrying the update but sequentially excluding each dependency as the various update attempts revealed them to me. I finally got a working update with: yum --exclude wxGTK --exclude nss-devel --exclude 'rpm-*' --exclude popt update; date wxGTK is excluded since I'm also running audacity 1.3.0b. The remaining excludes got me around the nss-devel problem. Got up this morning and re-ran my yum update with only wxGTK excluded and it worked just fine. Literally as I was typing this e-mail, the update for my laptop did the same thing (complaint about a missing nss-devel). My other systems all required changing /etc/yum.repos.d/Centos-Base.repo to use "baseurl" instead of "mirrorlist" before the update would even run. I made the same change on the laptop and the update is now progressing as expected. The laptop and my workstation are the only x86_64 installations. The remaining systems are all 32 bit. Since the problem still occurred on my laptop but went away when I switched to "baseurl", I wonder if one of the mirrors has a bad configuration. Changing to baseurl on the laptop got me a different mirror (or just blind luck that I didn't get the same mirror). Various standard extensions are included, as well as the OCI8 1.3.5 extension for Oracle Database access. The PDO_OCI driver for the PDO extension is not currently included. The packages are provided for installation convenience. They are not supported.

RPM dependency graphical viewer

Greetings, Has anybody come across a graphical dependency viewer for the RPM / YUM based package managers? The reason is I am unable to update to Centos 5.3 due the fact that mine is an experimental system and I have had to use various repos in the past. now it is somewhat impractical for fresh install. I do not have a whole lot of H/W. I don't mind pruning the dependency manually if I get a view -- even if it is a pstree/tree like output. Also I am yet to make headways with OO3 and oh, my uname -a shows Linux custom.xxxxxxx.com 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5 #1 SMP Tue Dec 16 12:03:43 EST 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux TIA Regards, Rajagopal PS. Samba and iptables - woes

Hi, I was searching for the system wide bash_logout and couldn't find any documentation on it. If I create a file ~/.bash_logout file it gets executed when the user logs out but when I create a system wide /etc/bash_logout it doesn't work. Even better do it your self it's not really difficould: try assigning different udp port for broadcast in both the clusters, default port used is #udpport 694 you also need them to be running in different chroot environments. kickstart install

Hi all, trying to do an install on a ATI radeon 3200 system I am using a kickstart file from 5.2 that works fine in 5.2 First two lines of my post section I do: init 3 chvt 3 This is not happening ? When I try and do a CTRL-ALT-F2 the screen goes black, ALT-F6 to go back has a white screen with the mouse cursor showing busy and the normal background is missing or just not painted. Any ideas? And everyone involved with this release! I followed the instructions (including removing the two packages, lam and I forget what other one it was now, and updating glibc first), and the update was completely painless. And, with that yum "fastest repo" add-on thingy, wow! I had 2 megaBYTE/sec downloads of the updates to my 6 boxes. Everything was updated in an hour, and I was good to go, and all appears well. You know, I've had more update packages with Fedora 8 after not updating for five days than with this update! I'm guessing 5.2 packages that didn't get updated are par for the course: they still work fine, so they don't get updated (I'm new to this, obviously), or get their file extensions changed when you do an rpm -q (package). Karanbir, you and the entire production/development/testing team, and those upstream, get a "bravo" from me! 5.2-5.3 Xen upgrade weirdness

Hi, Has anyone tried upgrading xen domu's from 5.2 to 5.3? I just did a yum upgrade glibc & yum upgrade yum. All appeared to go well but when I rebooted and tried to connect to the network, I could not. Looking at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts I see that the that there is now an ifcfg-eth0 and an ifcfg-eth0.bak. ifcfg-eth0 now contains configuration for a dynamically configured interface and ifcfg-eth0.bak has the old static config information. In addition, the mac address of the interface has also been changed. I can put everything back but I would like to know if this behavior is deliberate? If so how do I revert whatever is making the changes so that this does not happen. I have software on some of my domu's that requires me to go get new license keys when mac addresses or ip addresses change. So far in my limited testing this only seems to happen on the domu. I heard that after two of my boxes were already updated the above way and they didn't experience any issues, so maybe it was bogus, but it certainly can't hurt to do yum update glibc first. remote server, be sure to do it inside of screen.

Hi, I'm currently busy finishing "Linux aux petits oignons", a practical introduction to Linux, aimed primarily at the frustrated Windows user. This is the first of two volumes, it's written in french, and all examples in the book are based on CentOS. (Note: looks like I'll have to update some screenshots to 5.3 :oD) Usually the first question that arises is: why not base your book on Ubuntu/Fedora/SuSE/whatever? I answer that question in the book, but in short: I'm using Linux professionally, both on server and desktop, and my distro of choice for both is CentOS. It's one of those rare distros where you login and everything Just Works(tm). I'm aware of the few drawbacks (recent hardware, latest version of apps, yadda yadda), but I can live with that. Another thing you will maybe notice: I'm not shy about introducing newbies to the commandline. Usually Linux books for beginners seem more and more GUI-centered, but I'm taking the opposite way, preferring to explain simple and basic UNIX concepts. (The heck if I lose 90% of prospective readers who will rather go off and buy "Simple comme Ubuntu" :oD) Here's the - almost - final version of the manuscript. It will go to the graphist sometime next week. Help setting up multipathing on CentOS 4.7 to an Equallogic iSCSI target

I'm trying to test out an Equallogic PS5500 with a server running CentOS 4.7 I can create a volume and mount it fine using the standard iscsi-initiator-utils tools. The Equallogic box has 3 Gigabit interfaces and I would like to try to set up things so I can read/write from/to the volume using multiple NICs on the server i.e. get 200+ Mbyte/s access to the volume - I've had some basic info from Equallogic (Dell) saying that I need to set up DM multipathing - however, the info I have starts by saying that I have to: "Make sure the host can see multiple devices representing the same target volume" However, I'm not sure how I get to this point i.e. how do I set up the Equallogic and/or server so that I can see a single volume over multiple network links? Has anyone set up one of these Equallogic boxes in this way using CentOS4/RHEL4 ? Thanks James Pearson

I'm just wondering if anyone else here is using this? The majority of jobs on our CentOS5 server "fail" by "Communications failure" right at the end, apparently on the very last file which, however, is recoverable, as is the whole archive. In more than half these failures, the Linux agent has stopped and, in about half of those, crashes leaving a backtrace. I had similar symptoms in Fedora4 (though much less often) and Fedora9 when the data was on a different server. Symantec have looked at this but they only "support" RHEL and SLES so will not delve deeper. Getting ready for CentOS 5.4

Hi, Since the release of CentOS 5.3 is imminent(?) I'd like to ask a question regarding why did it took so long to be released and, more important, suggest some actions in order to reduce this time if I can assume what caused this delay. First I'd like to make sure I am not complaining about this delay between the RHEL and CentOS releases per se. I did not help in any way to make it happen faster and usually I don't mind having a three weeks gap between them. But I've noticed that we had two security related kernel updates from RHEL since the RHEL 5.3 release and there is no word on when it will be released or why is it taking so long. I can only assume that this delay is caused by lack of the necessary human resources. So, if this is really the case I'd suggest making some sort of campaign to raise money and provide the necessary resources in order to speed things up. If RH maintains the 4-6 month schedule it can happen again in less than three months. If this is not the case as a suggestion please let the community know what's going on. Perhaps an automated email sent to the mailing list with today's status (like 400 packages left to rebase, 20 packages being reviewed by QA etc) would give a sense of progress, let the others know if you hit problems and reduce the anxiety with daily doses of news :) Regards.

Hi, Is the tracker for the 5.3-release working properly? The only torrent I see actually downloading is CentOS-5.3-i386-bin-1to6. The other three for the i386 DVD and ditto for x86_64 (cd+dvd) are just sitting there. The availability and the number of connected peers in the swarm for each torrent is rather high though. Do torrent downloads work from a single tracker at centos.org, or are those individual trackers depending on what mirror you download the torrent-file from? Replacing my Scalix mail server

I really need to either upgrade my Scalix server or replace it. It has to be: Free Integrated with anti-spam IPv6 support optional anti-virus (processing concerns) I don't have to be able to port mail from the Scalix to the new server. Everyone can just POP their mail. I have read a bit about Zimbra, it comes as a tar for rhel 5. No rpm that I can find. I also found SME, I have a LOT of questions about it, and am asking on their forum board. Anything else out there I should look for?

I just setup CENTOS 4.7 with latest patches on DELL server. I also configured NTP point to out time server. live audio feed via telephone link

I'm looking into costs and feasibility of moving a live feed from a FM radio station from the station to a point that's past the usable range of their radio signal. It's a rural location and Internet service is not available at the station. If the destination was closer or their transmitter was more powerful, I could avoid this step and just plug in a radio, but.... My best idea so far is to rent a dedicated phone line from the station to the point where we need the feed, then get some kind of on-the-fly audio compressor to hook up to the main board in the station, push it out over the phone line, then decompress it at the destination. I'm pretty sure there is dedicated hardware to do the compression/decompression (whatever they use to do those "radio remotes" from Sally's Sofa Sales without sounding like they are broadcasting from the bottom of a rain barrel) and I'm currently looking into that angle too, but I'm wondering if it would be cheaper/easier/better to have something running on Linux at both ends of the connection to handle the audio compression/decompression. Anyone used authconfig to join a CentOS box to an AD Domain? I can't for the life of me get this command to even execute without error? Looking at the tui which I can make work, I am trying to glean possible settings from it but have no luck. Although krb5 auth is disabled and winbind is enabled, there is kerb conf that must be setup etc... Looking at /etc/sysconfig/authconfig from a temporary box built with a gui and joined successfully, I also can't make the cli equivalent work? I can't find a single piece of info via Google either. Any pointers would be helpful! jlc

cross building rpms for 32bit OS

My test / development host runs CentOS-5.x x86_64. There I have successfully created an rpm for GiT-1.6.1-1 for x86_64. Now I would like to build the same rpm package for CentOS-5.x i386, but on the x86_64 machine. Is this even possible? Web based project management recomendations

I was wondering if anyone can recommend an advanced to enterprise class project management package (web based) that runs with a pretty "vanilla" centos install. I would prefer to stick within the realm of php/mysql (as I am not too familiar with the java servers), but would venture there if the reasons were there to do so. Are there instructions on how to take the actual ISO install image (not a live image), put that iso file on a USB thumbdrive and install from that instead of DVD? I would be interested in putting a kickstart file on the USB also. so just plug in a USB and everything installs just the way I want/need. Thanks, Jerry

Installing Cent OS from a usb flash drive

I recently acquired a Fujitsu Lifebook 1610. Unfortunately, the machine was missing a lot of the stuff that would've come with it brand new, mainly the usb cdrom drive. Currently, I'm running Fedora on it, and I installed it using a usb flash drive with the help of a program called unetbootin(Probably not spelled right). to load the ISO onto the USB drive. I've successfully used the same program to load the Cent OS live cd onto a flash drive, and I've run it on the machine. Now, is there a way that I can install cent os onto the machine by way of the usb flash drive? I've tried the network install route, and didn't have any luck. Thanks Jim

CentOS5U2 waiting too long when ssh login to other linux servers

The waiting time is about 50s on my CentOS box now. "yum remove openssh* "and "yum install openssh*" can't make it right. "mv ~/.ssh{,.bak}" not works either. Creating a CentOS Print Server for Windows Clients

A while ago I looked into this and was told not to bother as it was a hack at best. Anyone shed any reliable info on creating a print server for windows nt -> vista clients both x86 and x46 for a few Canon and HP IP Printers. gdmgreeter and powersave

I have a bunch of workstations running CentOS 5.2. When the gdmgreeter is displayed, the monitor never blanks or powers off even though I have DPMS enabled in xorg.conf. When a user is logged in it works as expected. I Googled around and saw some references to this happening, but have not found a solution. Am I missing something obvious? The display adapters are Radeon 2400X's and use the most recent drivers from ATI. My users are students, and not very reliable in manually turning off the monitors when they are finished. Can anyone help me with this? The reason we did not use 64 bits O.S. due to we still have some problem run 64 bit ORACLE on X86_64. I have another question: since server we have is "SMP" how come it can show 32 GB RAM on application like "top" and "free"?
