Unless I'm mistaken, does it look like Centos 4.7 is missing an update released on December 3rd 2008? Upstream details :- http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2008-0989.html An updated tmpwatch package that fixes various bugs is now available. The tmpwatch utility recursively searches through specified directories and removes files which have not been accessed in a specified period of time. tmpwatch is typically enabled and configured to clean up directories used for temporarily holding files, such as, for example, the /tmp directory. This updated tmpwatch package includes fixes for the following bugs: * tmpwatch unnecessarily reported a "No such file or directory" error whenever a file was deleted before tmpwatch accessed it. Gnome Desktop Session Save?

I seem to recall that at one time with CentOS I had the ability to save my gnome desktop and open applications, like terminal, when exiting. The effect was such that when I logged on to a new session those applications would open automatically for me. Is my memory faulty? If not, then has this facility been removed? Alternative to audacity

What's a good, gui-based sound editor as an alternative to audacity (since that is not working right now due to conflicts in the gtk libraries in rpmforge)? Or is there another place whence one may retrieve audacity? I tried sourceforge, but the links there resolve to a broken download link or they are for 64-bit rpms. Thanks. mhr

CentOS, PHP, Basic GIS

I have no experience with GIS whatsoever. I really know squat about it. I'm currently working on a project to plot locality data for wildlife on a map of Shasta County. This is for a new herpetological club that hopes to track strength of our local herp populations, since it seems evident that in the last 20 years we lost one species of frog and are close to losing another (probably less than 100 left and they don't seem to be successfully breeding) and the declines were known, but the extent of the declines was not known well enough until it was too late. We want to try and prevent that with other species in our county by keeping records of where they currently are and where they use to be but are no longer found. When we see what appears to be shrinking range, we can investigate and if need be, request surveys by wildlife management before it is too late. Basically - the data will be plotted as a grid of regular hexagons. When locality information (museum record or photo voucher record in our own database) exists, the hexagon the record sits in gets drawn a pretty color (depending on type and age of records). I have it working on a raster (jpg) map where I guessed the latitude/longitude borders - working well enough with sample data that I know my php code works, but while it is ballpark accurate I need to do it with maps of known values. Quick and dirty option - obtain (possibly pay for) a large (at least 2k pixels wide) raster map with known lat/lon borders that has the county outline, major lakes and rivers, nothing else. The maps could be made and then resized for web view. The major problem with that model is that drawing colored hexagons near the county border and near rivers will make it more difficult to see them, thus making it harder to interpret the map. What I would prefer to do - Draw my data hexagons on a blank slate [ via imagecreate(width,height) function), then draw the county border on top of that, and then on top of that either draw the lakes/rivers and/or basic topographical lines. My preference obviously includes getting data sets for those things (county border, lakes/rivers, topography) in a format that I can parse with php to draw them with gd. My county does have some GIS data available: http://www.shastagis.co.shasta.ca.us/gissearch/search_new.aspx I don't have a clue how to get that data into format useful for drawing with gd via php. Anyone have experience with this? Can anyone recommend a (preferably free) Linux GIS program that works on CentOS that could potentially convert data files into format useful for drawing with gd? I don't need to get fancy with zoom, rotate, etc. capabilities - just a basic static flat map output. Thanks for any suggestions. I may try to find a "GIS for dummies" type book, though I've generally not been fond of dummy books, I kind of feel like one when it comes to GIS.

Fully up-to-date CentOS 5.2 and Firefox browser. A previous thread had a problem with plugins disappearing. I've discovered, by accident, a causal relationship. Running a Thunderbird mail client (could happen with others? Haven't tested with Evolution yet.) I click a link that opens the browser. BANG! The plugins.dat is "emptied". Restored from my rsync backup, repeat, BANG! "Empty" again. Now, if the browser is already open, NP. Anyone can confirm? Known problem? If not, I'll post bugs in the appropriate places. TIA. -- Bill

Hi list, I have to build vpn server for 1500 clients. No encryption necessary. can anyone please recommend me vpn server. I do not have experience on vpn. I have tested openvpn on my test setup, & its working fine. I want to check if there any other vpn server available. I have not checked but can pptp vpn be usefull? Hi ALL, I recently withed from CentOS 3 X server to CentOS 4.5. It works fine other than printers. there are many printers connected to it. We have configured the commnad printconf queue type is Networked UNIX (LPD) Some times, we will be able to print , But, some times, We will NOT be able to print. We can ping its ip address. Even, when we can't print, We can ping its ip address. When we check logs , we see something like this. [Job 888] Unable to connect to printer; will retry in 30 seconds...: Connection timed out Then, What we do is , We go to application, system setting, printing and when we get the window, We click apply button, Then, again, We will be able to print. Could u pls let me know why? But, When We used CentOS 3X, it worked fine. MCP51 sound card can be recognized but can't work

Hi all, I recently install CentOS 5.2 on my Asus Z99M laptop, everything seem to works fine but there is some problem with the sound card. The system can recognized the hardware and I can even run the Realplayer for linux without any error messages, but it can't make any sound, or even noise. I have googled a lot but still can't get it work. Will anyone please guide me to solve this problem, step by step or just give me some reference. I will provide any information needed. Many thanks! Hi - is it possible to load a SMP version of a kernel on a system running a single CPU version of the kernel without a reboot? For instance, a quad CPU system was accidentally booted as 2.6.9-78.0.5.EL but we need to load 2.6.9-78.0.5.ELsmp instead. Any help would be appreciated. -- Article. VI. Hi all! Becaule i heard that the apt was great,i wanted to try it.And when i tried to update my system,the yum faid,i installed the apt which came from dag repo by yum. After that i did:sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade.There are some problem and i did as apt suggested:sudo apt-get --fix-broken install.Then apt said should remove 11 softwares insclude yum.I thougt even i removed the yum,i could installed it by apt again,so i removed them. Hello guys, recently my mail provider started blocking mails from non-existent domain. We use for internal purposes domain labs.hlacik.eu which exists only in our local DNS servers. Our mailserver is sx1.labs.polarion.com . As we use virtual domains configuration & mailman i want to keep it that way == unchanged myorigin or mydomain. What i want to setup is just masquerading for mails sent from localhost. As example mail from root(a)sx1.labs.polarion.com should be masqueraded to mail from root(a)polarion.com and etc. This is very easy fix in sendmail, but how to do this in postfix - and not to break virtual domains configuration. Last night, a visitor was using my daughters box and she was using mine. The web site she was on wanted Adobe Flash or a newer version of Adobe Flash. At that moment, I forgot that I have the Adobe Yum Repository installed. I downloaded the .rpm file from Adobe and when I tried to install it, got a message that a later version is already installed. First thought was the other thread, about Firefox and Adobe for .pdf files. Is this a glitch in the latest version of Firefox we are now using? My box is fully updated. In Add Ons, for Plug Ins, I see Shockwave Flash v. 9.0 r124 and the rest is Mplayer stuff. TIA

Have you gone into BIOS and seen what is there that might be affecting this stuff? I know there are often selectable modes for video cards. Often in a laptop, main memory is shared with the video card. If you have not allocated enough memory to the video, maybe that is causing a lot of the problems? If you "system" memory is really small, you may not be able to get decent resolution with higher color resolutions. If your BIOS has settings, start off with 4 bit color depth. That gives 16 colors only, but it's a start. Also pick a low resolution, like 640x480 or 800x640(?). Maybe a combination of 4 bit color depth, low resolution, more memory shared with video chip, etc. makes it start working. Oh! Rebuild libc-client from uw source?

Hi - I'm running CentOS 5.2, and I'm trying to use libc-client, but I'm having some troubles. It seems the pre-built libc-client (2004g) rpm from the yum repository doesn't support the mm_dlog feature. I tried rebuilding from the source rpm, but that didn't help - still no mm_dlog support. I also tried various other libc-client rpms for other RedHat-type systems FC, WhiteBox, etc, but I couldn't find any that worked and had mm_dlog support. My question: Does anybody know what I would need to do to build libc-client from scratch from UW's sources? I tried a basic build and I do get c-client.a, but I definitely don't get any shared object libraries in the output. Thanks, Noah

HAL Daemon failure on boot up

I've been having a problem for a while: when booting, haldaemon will fail, leaving me without CD/DVD and floppy drives available. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? If so, can anyone suggest a solution? BackupPC: two newbie questions

I'm running BackupPC under Centos-5.2. 1. Will BackupPC backup files in NFS-mounted directories? If so, is there any simple way of preventing this? 2. I have seen it suggested that it is not a good idea to backup onto a partition on the same drive as the BackupPC server? Is that true? If so, is a partition on a separate drive on the same machine also bad? BackupPC: 2 newbie questions

1. Will BackupPC backup files in NFS-mounted directories? If so, is there any simple way of preventing this? 2. I have seen it suggested that it is not a good idea to backup onto a partition on the same machine as the BackupPC server? Is that true? If so, is a partition on a separate drive on the same machine also bad? Ps I tried asking on the BackupPC mailing list/newsgroup but seem to have failed to communicate in some way.

AHCI at boot?

I'm having trouble getting a Centos installation to boot on a system with hdd's hanging off an AHCI hba. Long ago, I posted about only seeing four of the six sata ports on my asus server board. According to research I've done since then (I now need the ports!), the solution is to enable the AHCI bios, which turns on NCQ and the last two ports. The already installed system does not like the fact I've changed to ahci and does not load the ahci module, eventually failing to boot complaining it cannot mount the root fs, killing init, etc. If I boot off the 5.2 installation dvd or a fedora 9 dvd, the kernel boots just fine, loads up the ahci module and sees the drives no problem. So I'm wondering what config files I need to tweak, to help the already installed system use the "new" ahci controller? Previously, it appears to have been using the piix module to access the drive with the root fs on it. I'm using the 64-bit 2.6.18-92.1.18 centosplus kernel (for XFS support). The box is running an asus dsbf-de board, with 2x e5405 cpus and 16g of ram. There are six drives on the ahci, one 80g "system" drive (the boot drive), and five 750g storage drives. There is also a supermicro 8 port sata hba in the system, with five 250g drives on it. The supermicro uses the sata_mv module and is detected just fine. Thanks for any suggestions! Gordon

FTPS setup problem

Hi! I'm trying to figure out what's going wrong with a "simple" FTPS setup and VSFTPD. I saw references on Google and tried, and tried, and tried... without success. I'll start by explaining my situation: I have a WEB development server behind a firewall. It's currently only for the intranet. We now have an external company that will have to do a new website for us and we want them to access securely our development server. Internally, we access it with regular FTP (we use DreamWeaver 8). In the references i saw, i'd just add the following lines and it is supposed to work: ssl_enable=YES allow_anon_ssl=NO force_local_data_ssl=NO force_local_logins_ssl=NO ssl_tlsv1=YES ssl_sslv2=YES ssl_sslv3=NO rsa_cert_file=/etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.pem Here are the previous lines in my vsftpd config: anonymous_enable=YES local_enable=YES write_enable=YES local_umask=022 dirmessage_enable=YES xferlog_enable=YES connect_from_port_20=YES xferlog_std_format=YES chroot_local_user=YES chroot_list_enable=YES chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.chroot_list pam_service_name=vsftpd userlist_enable=YES listen=YES tcp_wrappers=YES I generated the PEM cert with the following command: openssl req -x509 -nodes -days 365 -newkey rsa:1024 -keyout /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.pem -out /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.pem I tried to connect with FileZilla without luck. flash fails to work on Los Angeles Times website - fix

Hello, I have a 32-bit install of C5.2 on my Intel Centrino Laptop (2005). The Adobe flash plugin works fine in Firefox in all cases except on the Los Angeles Times website http://www.latimes.com. I was baffled by this for a few months, since it works on another 32-bit C5.2 box. When I realized that the only real difference was that the laptop had no LAMP install, and both had the same elaborate set of hosts redirects (to avoid adverts), it seemed reasonable that the /etc/hosts file might be the culprit. Sure enough, both boxes had this line in the redirects ----------- /etc/hosts ------------ 127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net ----------- end snip --------- I could see that flash was hanging on the laptop when it looked for a response from ad.doubleclick.net In order to fix the bug, I commented out the line. Flash now worked! In order to avoid the advert, I changed 127.0.0.1, to another private LAMP install on my home network (192.168.1.104). Problem solved. At the very least this redirect needs to return a response, or the flash video will hang and never start. This is true for the LA Times implementation of adverts, at least. Adding RAM

I have a server running Centos 4.7 32bit. Will moving from 4Gig of RAM to 8Gig do any good? Since its 32bit I assume it will only be able to address the first 4Gig not? When I installed CentOS I did not do anything special to enable using more then 4Gig if thats required. Exim, spamassassin and Clamd seem to be the biggest load on this machine. My biggest bottle neck is disk I/O anyway. Wish I had installed CentOS 5.x 64bit way back when but some of the software I was using at time listed support for it as beta. Matt

nfs slow?

Hi all, I'm migrating from Gentoo to CentOS... I'm experiencing a rather low performance in NFS r/w (as client). NFS server is solaris (which exports zfs volumes via nfs). The very same exports were mounted with the same parameters (auto,nosuid,exec) on gentoo and centos server (bot x86_64)... It happens that centos is 5-10 times slower either in read and write operations... Ok, I'll try to tune rsize and wsize, but does anybody have an hint on this low performance? cpuspeed problems with 5.2 and 2.6.18-92.1.18 kernel revision

After upgrade my laptop, I discovered a low performance on it. The laptop is a 2,73GHz Intel centrino and from some kernels versions to now, it had a good performance, the cpu scaling worked fine. Now, I discover that forcing in /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed the governors and/or max/min speeds, it don't want to run more quickly. The laptop boots fine with the correct speed (usual speed), but when the init scripts run the service cpuspeed, the performance goes low: Only wants 800MHz!! Yes, I played with the documentation and the values on it, but the problem began before I touch them. I discovered the problem after upgrade the kernel (some weeks ago). Its very curious that if I power off/on or reboot the laptop, the next boot is with low speed, but if I power off, wait for 10 minutes, and power on again, the laptop boots at normal speed but when cpuspeed service goes up, the speed goes to low. I can't change the speed using gnome or manually writing to /sys/devices/cpu/cpu0/ system files. Has anybody got any problem as this? How to solve or work around (running an old kernel is an option)? Has any relationship with gnome cpuspeed monitor or any gnome component? Thanks Regards

Hello all, I've got CentOS 5.2 installed on an old Pentium III server. The server is used by a club at my school, and they are rapidly running out of room on the internal IDE drives that are configured in software RAID 1. I have a Silicon Image SATA controller in the server, and I was planning on adding two more SATA hard drives to the computer. Is there a GUI like Disk Druid for initializing hard drives in software RAID 1 *after* the system has been installed? Thanks, Hal

OT: Ping failed

Hi, The Ping service in Nagios has "unknown" status which was previously OK, this happens after i messed up some of the files owner and accidentally change it to Apache. Although I restored most of the file permission back to Root, the problem above still appears which I suspect is due to permission. Does anybody have idea where to look at. suspend/resume system crash

yum udpate not getting new kernel

On one notebook (so far), I have not picked up the new kernel: kernel-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5.i686.rpm I have gotten it on some notebooks. So far the only difference I can see between the systems that MIGHT matter is those that got the update were new installs and had not reached 3 installed kernels. The one that failed already had 3 kernels in /boot. But I seem to recall this was about how many to keep in /boot, not when to stop receiving them....

vim helpfile tag issues

Just wondering if anyone can replicate this issue.... On CentOS 5.2, using vim 7.0.237, I'm having a consistent issue across all my centos boxen. if I try and access the help files direct (as root), such as ":help tutor" I get: "usr_01.txt.gz" [readonly][noeol][converted] 11L, 4393C E434: Can't find tag pattern Press ENTER or type command to continue If I press enter, it shows me what appears to be the output of a binary. looking at that top line, it appears as if the help files are compressed, and it can't read the tags within them. Is there a satellite package I need to unpack or enable the ability for vim to decipher these? If I just type ":help" the status line reads: "help.txt" [readonly] 214L, 7883C which is ok, and the text file is displayed correctly. Under Fedora 9, doing a ":help tutor" works correctly, and the status line reads: "usr_01.txt.gz" [readonly][noeol] 11L, 2914C Note the different tag on the centos boxen "[converted]".. I have a minimal installation of CentOS, and I wanted to then install X Windows and the GNOME desktop. I then tried the following, which failed on a dependency: $ yum -y groupinstall "X Window System" "GNOME Desktop Environment" --> Running transaction check ---> Package nautilus-sendto.i386 0:0.7-5.fc6 set to be updated --> Processing Dependency: libgaim.so.0 for package: nautilus-sendto ---> Package opensp.i386 0:1.5.2-4 set to be updated --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: libgaim.so.0 is needed by package nautilus-sendto So GNOME appears to be missing some dependencies in the yum repository. I finally gave up and installed KDE, which installed flawlessly: $ yum -y groupinstall "X Window System" "KDE (K Desktop Environment)" I assume this is a bug with the GNOME packages (required dependency not found). Bogus ssh complaints about dns

Hi, If I ssh to a CentOS5 box using just the hostname, not the full name, resulting from appending domain name from the search record in resolv.conf it says the ip maps to the correct full name it gets from reverse dns, and claims the full name does not map back to the ip, but it does as verified by both nslookup and dig If I ssh to the full name instead of the short name, the I don't get these complaints. The short term work around is to make sure all scripts use the full name, instead of the short name without the domain. But that is very annoying. I browsed through the man pages for ssh, sshd, ssh_config, and sshd_config and did not spot anything that was misconfigured. But I could have missed something -- Drew Einhorn

Problems compiling PostgreSQL package from FC8 on CentOS 5

Dear CentOS list we are a small software company making mostly web driven GIS software. We started to simplify out sysadmin life making RPM packages of most of the GIS software stack. For a dependency issue we had to abandon the upstream 8.1 PostgreSQL and install at least a 8.2 version. Taking the package from Fedora 8 and rebuilding it for x86_64 went smoothly. Unfortunatly the same is not true for i386. is there a utility or SOME method to determine which /dev/videoX (like /dev/video0 or /dev/video1) is being used by a device??? Example I have a USB camera and a USB TV module how do I determine which device is on /dev/video0 and which is on /dev/video1 I have seen perhaps a way in dmesg but I am looking for the BEST way and the correct way. sendmail Deferred mail - reason unknown

I'm a bit baffled by this problem. Maybe there's a sendmail guru out there who can help me out here. We have some end-users who need to receive system-generated mail that originates from a java-based application on our network. The java app sends the mail through our sendmail cluster, which then sends the email on to the end-user over the Internet. The size of the emails can range from a few kb up through around 2Mb in size. The mail logs show that these emails are typically delayed for up to 24 hours, sometimes longer. It appears that several attempts to deliver the email are made, with each unsuccessful one showing "Deferred" status in the maillog. After several hours of failed attempts the mail finally goes through successfully. Here is a typical entry (customer name redacted): exmx1 : Dec 14 05:28:39 exmx1 sendmail[31574]: mBDIYhEa031574: to=< customer(a)example.com>, delay=00:00:00, xde lay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, pri=41874, relay=mail.example.com., dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred Unfortunately there is no reason given for the "Deferred" status such as "Server unavailable", etc. Do you have any ideas how I can begin to troubleshoot this?

Any way to reduce CPU use of OpenSSH?

On my CentOS v5.2 server (dual Pentium4) the OpenSSH daemon stands out as being the most CPU-intensive of the applications running, It's used 176 minutes of CPU time in the last 2 days alone. Is there any way to lower the CPU utilization without compromising security? (I.e. without using a less processor-intensive encrypt/decrypt algorithm?) I'm getting the CPU use figures from top, so there no fine-grained info on exactly what code is taking so much time. I'm assuming that the bulk of the time is spent in the OpenSSL libraries. Is there some hardware add-on or processor-specific optimization that would reduce the CPU load incurred by OpenSSH? Thanks.

Centos 5.2 yum check-update fails - repo change?

A couple of days ago I run yum update to take care of installing new updates for evolution.i386, evolution-data-server.i386 and nscd.i386 . The update went through with no fuss. Yesterday when I ran check-update I got the exact same updates list. So I did not run yum update, thinking this was a sync error or a repo issue. Today (just a few minutes ago) I ran the update check again and got the same list. So I ran yum clean all and now I get a different error, detailed below. Anyone know why this happens or what to do? I see the epel mirror has changed but don't know why or what to make of it. Advice welcome. CentOS PPC architecture support

I have a system with a PowerPC cpu which I'd like to run CentOS on in a production environment (albeit for a home personal server.) Does anyone know if the CentOS team are actually going to support PPC? I have found a page which states release 4 is in beta[1]. But little else. Is there lack of demand for support for this aging arch? Is there a lack of volunteers? I'd be willing to test the releases and bug report, or help out in anyway I can. CentOS Bug Reporting Policy

I'm a little confused about what you are supposed to do when you discover a bug with CentOS (and by implication RHEL). Is there some policy as to what to do and where to report the bug? It doesn't seem appropriate to report it to http://bugs.centos.org because CentOS is kept in-sync with the upstream, so bugs will never get fixed in CentOS, only in the upstream distribution. Unless there is some feedback mechanism from this CentOS bugtracker to Redhat that I am unaware of. So that makes the obvious place to report any bugs http://bugzilla.redhat.com, but do they (Redhat) have any opinion on people reporting bugs observed on a CentOS distribution there? Do they welcome it or do they discourage it? There is certainly no CentOS product classification in their bugzilla I can see. So, in short, is there any CentOS bug reporting policy, and is it written down anywhere? Hywel.

Hello all, I have a CentOS Dom0 booting CentOS DomU, I am able to start multiple DomUs from the command line using xm create, but if I copy the configuration files to /etc/xen/auto only one of the DomUs seem to start up automatically. Centos4: USB disk standby?

Hi, I've decided to use an external USB disk as backup with rsync. This works fine. When the external disk is mounted, it does not go into standby/sleep/whatever, though I'm using it only for 30minutes at night. Is there a way to do this with C4, 2.6.9-78.0.8.ELsmp? E.g. unmount/some special command/upgrade to 5.2? Thx Raier

secure file not updating

On my Centos 5 server, the secure file has not updated since Dec 10. This despite the fact that I run an sshd server that I access many times per day. Most peculiar is the fact that a swatch monitor that I run on the secure file catches plenty of lines. It is as if when swatch catches a line in the file, the line is removed from the file and the modification date is set back. Hard to believe. Any ideas? Thanks, Mike.

Hello I am running CentOS 5.2 in VMWare 6.5. Firefox doesn't run but Konqurer does. VMware host (Vista) is connected to the internet via a DSL router. CentOS VMware network is brided, DHCP is activated, no firewall is acive. Perhaps somebody can help me. Thank you in advance Josef

Hi, I'm experiencing the most perplexing problem with iptables on CentOS 5.2. I'm hoping someone can point out what I must be missing here. I have memcached set up on several nodes on an internal network. I have the following rules set up to allow traffic between memcached nodes: IPTABLES -A INPUT -i bond0 -p tcp -m tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 11211 -j ACCEPT IPTABLES -A FORWARD -i bond0 -p tcp -m tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 11211 -j ACCEPT IPTABLES -A OUTPUT -o bond0 -p tcp -m tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 11211 -j ACCEPT IPTABLES -A FORWARD -o bond0 -p tcp -m tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 11211 -j ACCEPT And yet, iptables continues to drop memcached packets. Has anyone had any luck getting this to work? The kernel provide skge, sky2 and sk98lin modules all fail to load. I was able to download the latest version from the syskonnect.de site, and with some hacking/klduging of their install script managed to compile the module in there (a newer version of sk98lin, it seems) which recognised the card... but this isn't really sustainable 'cos new kernels will cause problems. Hello, I'm trying to install CentOS 5.2 on an HP 6730s notebook. All's going well except for one little item -- the networking. Never thought I'd have trouble with an Ethernet adapter, so I didn't even check before buying this machine; it was cheap. The adapter is a Marvell Yukon 88E8042 PCI-E Fast Ethernet controller. I can't find a Linux driver for it except one that appears to require me to recompile a custom kernel. I find it on the Marvell website: http://www.marvell.com/drivers/search.do It looks like I'll have to recompile the kernel to get this installed. Having read the warnings on the CentOS Wiki, I figured I should ask before building my own kernel for the first time. Do I have other options? Thanks! Kurt Hansen khansen(a)charityweb.net

Upgrade to new drives in raid, larger

Hi all, As part of my raid experience, I have yet to have to do this, but was wondering how you guys would attempt it. I have 3 drives in a raid 1, with one as a hot spare. They are 250gb with all space used by two raid devices, 1 with boot, the other with LVMs filling them up. Now, lets say down the road I want to put in 500gb drives and replace them....yikes. I was thinking of taking out the spare and replacing it first. Then cloning the raid 1 array drive as I normally would. This would leave 250 gb open. Then I was thinking to make it a spare and then pulling out drive 2 so drive 3, the 500gb, starts syncing. And replacing drive 2 as I did drive 3 above. When drive 3 is done syncing then I can pull out drive 1 and allow drive 2 to sync while drive 1 is turned into a hot spare. Now, supposing this will work, can the raid device be enlarged easily so the LVMs can be increased as needed (make the second raid fill up the drive as it does now)? Or is there a simpler or harder way to do this without waiting forever for the syncing. I am thinking by the time I need to replace them, centos6 will be out and I will just have to redo the whole computer anyway, but I have not seen anyone talk about this, thought I would see what you gurus would do. OT: Need some riser card advice...

Fellow server-builders out there, this is for you. :) I was trying to build a cheap JBOD type storage solution running CentOS. Ended up snagging a Supermicro SC826TQ-R800LPB 2U case (12 drives slots) and a Supermicro X7DBE-O motherboard. Unfortunately, without thinking I snagged a 3ware 9650SE-12ML SATA RAID card which is a full height card and thus does not fit in my case. I have a few options here: - Go with a 3U case instead. Now I have a 16-drive case with only a 12-way card. :-) - Return the 3Ware and order two of the 8-way cards which are half-height. This means I love some of my space now however as I have to have an extra spare drive per card. - Get a PCI-E riser. The riser option I like, except I also have the BBU unit for my RAID card meaning I need to ensure that I have enough clearance and support for it when the card is mounted horizontally. You can mount the battery elsewhere, but not the logic module... Most of the PCI-E 8x risers I've seen out there seem to be pretty small profile and I'm not sure if they'd give the clearance needed (see the Supermicro provided CSE-RR1U-E8). It looks like I need around 35mm of clearance to get the card in sideways with the BBU attached... Another solid option would looke to be a 2U riser, but I am having a harder time finding somethign reasonably priced. The RSC-R2UE-A3E8 from Supermicro looks perfect and would definitely give me the clearance I need, but is priced 10x higher than the 1U riser! Any advice? Apologies for the off-topic post.. this *will* be running CentOS however and there doesn't seem to be a more appropriate mailing list for general stuff like this.. :-) TIA, Ray

No /etc/yum/repos.d after new install of 5.2

Since I was in the unenviable position of completely reinstalling my system today, I started out from the 5.2 Final DVD and then ran yum update to get the 79 (?) packages (and another 14 after that). I noticed something I found rather odd. There is no /etc/yum/repos.d directory at all. Is this right? Doesn't seem so. Makes it hard to set specific options for various repositories. Can someone explain that one? Thanks. mhr

I found it - there has to be a /var/lib/nfs directory with a few subdirectories under it. Once I had created them all, I could run rpc.statd, and that unfroze everything. Thanks to all, esp. Bill for mentioning rpc - that was the clue for me. mhr

Information about ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) in CentOS 5

Hi, We are porting some applications from CentOS 4 to CentOS 5, the applications use mmap, and we found out that they sometimes crash in CentOS 5. We found out that this is due to the fact that CentOS 5 does randomization of the address space when loading binaries, libraries, and when using mmap, so that is what's causing our problem. The thing is, I'm trying to google for it, but I did not find any useful information on ASLR present in CentOS 5/RHEL 5/Linux 2.6.18. If anyone has any good pointers on reliable information on what does that code do, how to configure/tweak it, or how to use mmap properly to work around the issues, I would really appreciate it. In particular, if there is a switch/option that would allow us to disable it for some binaries/libraries only, it would be great, since this could allow us to do the upgrade sooner and try to find the proper fix for the problem later. Centos directory server

Hello List, I really hope that someone could shed some light here on where I am going rong, I have setup 2 directory servers one so that I can replicate from one to the other I have followed the manual to the letter (i think, well I have read and re-read it so many times now) from this place http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/dir-server/ag/8.0/Managing_Replication-C… but I still get errors, in the log on the supplier server it says the following NSMMReplicationPlugin - agmt="cn=sms.viasat.se" (ldap2:389): Replication bind to cn=Replication Manager on consumer failed: 32 () but I am not sure what I have done rong, has anyone got any idea of what I am doing rong? Hello, we have enabled yum-updatesd on our dozen real and virtual machines running CentOS 5.2 some time ago and are very satisfied: afarber@ablsw01:~> grep -v ^# /etc/yum/yum-updatesd.conf [main] run_interval = 7200 updaterefresh = 1200 emit_via = email dbus_listener = no do_update = yes do_download = yes do_download_deps = yes (it would be good to make it use the proxy though...) My plan is to keep the update mails and if anything goes wrong, install the older packages. But until now I never needed to do that :-) However we have few machines running CentOS 4.7 which we can't upgrade to 5 (because of Oracle 9 etc.) Is there some similar service available? Or has anybody experience in putting "yum -y update" into crontab for CentOS 4? Any good advices? Thank you Alex

network driver needed at install time

I am wanting to use a motherboard that uses the 8111b reaktek chip. http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/HardwareList/RealTekRTL8111b This was great information. My question is now that I have a compiled module for centos 5.2 is there any way I can include that module in a DVD or load the module from USB at the installation time??? I use kickstart and that needs to work over the network. Is there an easy way to load a network driver at install from USB or something like that? Jerry

Is 4GB memory the 64bit switch tipping point?

I am curious what should be the benchmark for making the choice of switching from 32bit to 64bit Linux? I have a few assumptions below. Is my logic sound? (This is a follow up to the "Adding RAM" thread) Assumptions: 1. 4GB Memory. The main benefit of 64bit mode is the ability to address more than 4GB of RAM. I assume that you use 64bit mode if you want to *efficiently* have more than 4GB of RAM, or intend to upgrade past 4GB in the foreseeable future. (I emphasize "efficiently" because PAE is an option, if you are desperate to keep 32bit mode with more RAM) 2. Overhead. It is my assumption that 64bit has more "overhead", being that the registers are now 64bits long, instead of 32bit, which would mean more bits to pass around the system. So if you have less than 4GB of RAM, 32bit mode would perform better than 64bit mode. 3. Compatibility. Linux has made incredible strides to make 64bit Linux very robust and compatible, but I still occasionally see binary applications/plugins/drivers that popup which are 32bit mode only. This is usually only a problem with Desktop systems that want bleeding edge, or not as well supported software. 4. Desktop vs Servers. Current "desktops" machines generally have around 2GB of RAM, or less. Current "server" machines generally have around 2GB of RAM, or more (much more). Because of the overhead (#2) and compatibility (#3) I would think that Desktops would benefit from using 32bit mode, and Servers would benefit from 64bit mode. Is my logic sound? Thanks, Kenneth

I really do not see any link between the filesystem problems and libdvdcss. In the thread on the centos mailinglist you already identified the slowness to be related to an NFS mount. What if your system had filesystem errors all along, and when you installed the libdvdcss package it triggered these error into a fatal state. When you rebooted, the filesystem is being checked since it was no longer clean. You ran fsck without first doing fsck -N to see what would happen. The filesystem check also found out about all the other filesystem errors, and damaged files and brought the filesystem into a state where you see the problems you described. I would think you have had hardware problems, (or maybe your sudden reboot triggered a filesystem bug). Again, I seriously doubt the problems you have had are related to the libdvdcss RPM package. I am running CentOS 5/2 (latest updates) with the GNOME DE on a 32-bit machine (at work). I have k3b installed, and I was trying to copy a DVD earlier this morning, but k3b said it couldn't read encrypted DVDs. So, I installed libdvdcss from rpmforge and restarted k3b. It hung the system. I rebooted, and / had been damaged. After running e2fsck from the repair prompt, I rebooted and a whole slew of errors revolving around various /var directories that did not ecist occurred. I have been trying to repair /var, and so far with a fair modicum of success, but I've hit an interesting wall - two, actually. 1) The gdm refuses to come up. It claims that "Server Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set to /var/gdm, but this does not exist...." I've tried to pin down why the avahi daemon won't start because it keeps logging permissions errors trying to create the pid file /var/run/avahi-daemon//pid, but the setup of /var /var/run and /var/run/avahi-daemon are all identical to this (backup) machine. Any suggestions? Or is there a better, more comprehensive repair facility available? BTW, OT: Does anyone know why this might have happened? I have all this installed at home, no problems whatsoever (libdvdcss works seamlessly with all my DVD tools, including k3b). Thanks! mhr
