Watchdog process?

Hello, Is there a generic built-in way on CentOS to overlook that a specific process is alive and re-spawn it (or just run a configured command) when it dies? I know how to script things so a parent will watch its child, but was wondering whether there is something more readily available instead of having to reinvent the wheel. The process must be controlled via a /etc/init.d/... script and should be stop-able (it runs in a primary/stand-by configuration), so use of "respawn" in inittab is not a solution. So far googl'ing for "watchdog" comes up with references about system watchdog - which will reboot the system if the kernel appears to be stuck. Thanks, --Amos

Both servers have four Gbit NICs. Besides an unmanaged Gbit switch for the cluster communication (connected with eth0) I have two managed Gbit switches to which the servers and the clients will be attached. My idea was to use the following setup: switch2------eth1--bond1-- | switch1------eth2 | | | bond0 | switch1------eth3 This is for server1. Server2 should have two links with switch2 and one with switch1 instead. Switch1 and switch2 have a 3x1GBit 802.3ad trunk as switch interconnect. bond0 should be balance-rr (mode 0) to have load balancing and fault tolerance on switch2. The primary use is to double the capacity of the Gbit link. bond1 should be active-passive (mode 1) with bond0 as primary interface. This should guarantee availability of server1 to the workstations attached to switch2 in case switch1 fails. Both modes work fine as long as I use ethX-devices. According to /proc/net/bonding/bond0 I can bring bond0 up (MII Status: up), but in /proc/net/bonding/bond1 I can not bring the slave interface bond0 up. The "Permantent HW addr" is 00:00:00:00:00:00 no matter if I specify a MAC in ifcfg-bond0 or not. ifconfig bond0 shows the MAC of eth1 as HWaddr and the device as "UP BROADCAST RUNNING SLAVE MASTER MULTICAST". I use ARP for link monitoring, because MII monitoring seemed not reliable with my hardware (Broadcom BCM5708 + Intel 82571EB NICs and 3com 3848 + 4500G switches) on CentOS 5.2 (2.6.18-92.1.18.el5xen). Upgrading to Centos 4.7 on HP DL580G5 caused problems

As part of patching a cluster which has two DL580G5 login nodes ( 4X Intel 7300 DC cpus) & 24 HP DL160G5 compute nodes ( 2x Intel 5272 DC cpus) we encountered an issue that I would like to record: I upgraded both DL580s to Centos 4.7 via yum but only rebooted one initially- this node, previously bomb-proof, started to hang randomly with no obvious messages logged to help with diagnosis. In the dmessage output I found this sequence never seem before Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 20. Dazed and confused, but trying to continue Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled? Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 30. Dazed and confused, but trying to continue (repeated several times) Googling revealed many different scenarios with this boot error message, some suggesting a memory error - Oh Joy, these two machines have 64GB RAM each. I then changed grub.conf to boot to the previous kernel 2.6.9-67.0.15.ELsmp instead of the updated version of 2.6.9-78.0.5.ELsmp. The boot-time error messages immediately went away and so far the systems are reliable. Has anyone an explanation or confirmation that they have seen or overcome the above issue? I should mention that the DL160 compute nodes have not exhibited this behaviour at all. Les Oswald

This server has two network adapters, one for remote administration and another to serve iscsi disk. How can I bind iscsi target service to only one ip address?? Miredo 1.1.5

I found a src.rpm for 1.1.5-1 for fc8 (not rh8!). I was able to rebuild it on my Centos build system. The rpms are identified as 1.1.5-1.i386.rpm, no el5 or other identification was placed in the files. I don't see how to control this when you rebuild from an existing src.rpm. Interestingly the fc8 designation was lost. I also rebuild it on my fc10 system. It worked, and the rpms have fc10 in their names. Don't know how well they will work. I will be trying them over the next couple weeks. If anyone wants a copy, let me know....

Iptables Question

I have a squid proxy running transparently, so in my firewall script I run the following fairly early: iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -i $LAN -p tcp -m multiport --dports 80,443 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3128 This is a multihomed server so after this change the masquerading was removed (as only web access on the lan side of this server was needed). I now need to masq cleanly one device so that it can bypass the squid proxy. As order is important, would it be correct to put the following _in front_ of the PREROUTING command above: iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -o $WAN -j MASQUERADE iptables -A FORWARD -i $LAN -o $WAN -m mac --mac-source <mac addr> -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -p tcp -m multiport --dports 443 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i $WAN -o $LAN -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT Where is the best place to filter for the mac in this scenario? I am hoping anything w/o this mac will skip the whole masq setup and enter the PREROUTING command below, resulting in the traffic being proxied through squid. Thanks! jlc

Fedora 9 domU on CentOS 5.2 dom0 - very unstable?

I am running a Fedora 9 domU on CentOS 5.2 dom0, and it is quite unreliable. Every few days I have the following phenomenon: - many applications do not work at all (e. g. Nagios 3.05 stops checking, but the cgis work perfectly, the web server works as well) - system processes run into time outs (e. g. logging in via ssh runs into timeouts <<"connection reset by peer">> after many seconds, logging into the console does not get finished ever, no error, no refusal) and similiar All I can do then is destroy the domain (xm shutdown does not lead to anything either). Is this a known phenomenon? Is there any way to work around it? I do not have these problems with CentOS 5.2 domUs on the same machine (at least not that massive). Every hint or help is appreciated. Cannot mount samba shares

Hi, quick(?) question: Has anybody seen that problem below? More important question: Did anybody solve that? Googling around led me to the belief that someone fooled around with srvmgr.exe from a windows machine and that I should remove /var/cache/samba/share_info.tdb and restart samba. Which doesn't work. Now if I take out the "force group = users" everything works as expected. Except that I cannot write in this share - nobody isn't in the group users. I don't want to add nobody to the group users, nor can I go and change anything on that server regarding users and groups in the file system. I am trying to build Miredo 1.1.5 (http://www.remlab.net/miredo/devel.shtml.en) I have followed the rpmbuild instructions from: http://www.owlriver.com/tips/non-root/, and have the miredo source in ~/build/miredo-1.1.5. I run ./configure (as the INSTALL text file tells me to do) and get the error: checking for Judy.h usablity... no checking for Judy.h presence... no checking for Judy.h... no configure: WARING: If you don't care about scalability, re-run configure with ' --without-Judy'. configure: error: Required Judy dynamic arrays library missing.

squidGuard-simple.cgi display fields

I have this cgi file running on CentOS 5 with Apache 2.2.3 and although it executes most fields are empty, a typical block by squidGuard yields this: Supplementary info : Client address = 192.168.0.5+clientname Client name = User ident = Client group = URL = Target class = The redirect lines is: http://localhost/cgi-bin/squidGuard-simple.cgi?clientaddr=%a+clientname=%n+… I assume the "+" throws this off somehow, something to do with cgi and apache? vsftpd and SElinux

Hi folks, I have configured vsftpd with virtual users for webserver users (that means, a virtual users chrooted home is the document root of a virtual host in apache). That works fine so far - as long as SElinux ist not enforcing. I have tried to audit2allow out the problem, but did not succeed. Virtual vsftpd users are denied access to directories: virtual users are mapped to a system user with vsftpd; after login the vsftpd process changes into the system users home directory, then into the virtual users chroot. And the first step (changing into the system users home dir) is denied by SElinux. But there is no "avc denial" in audit log any more - I have policied these out completely. There seems to be a "dontaudit" denial working - which I cannot make visible on CentOS since the -D flag is not available for semodule (as it is in Fedora 9, e.g.). So I am quite stuck here. Is there anything I can do to find the denial I need to feed into audit2allow? Or some other way to make SElinux accept vsftpds access? Perhaps someone out there has already gone through this process. Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

Running on 8G CF card

hi all, Was wondering if anyone is running Centos on a CF card slot. It installed OK , it boots ok, but after a while it is no longer on the network. After power cycling there is nothing in the /var/log/messages as to a crash etc... I ran a USB thumb drive 8G on this same PC and it seems to continue to work. Just STICKS out a few inches. Not the best look. Any pointers on how to find out what it doesnt like? Any pointers on running from a CF card. I have done the straight 686 install - I do add asterisk to the box. Jerry

Squidguard and redirections

I don't have a web server on a machine running squid and squidgaurd and don't really want to add one. Is there a way to do something other than redirect in an acl, such that users could see why the page they are trying to get to is not available? Thanks! jlc

I'm having an issue with workstation opening pdf's with firefox. I have the adobe plugin installed and enabled in firefox but firefox will only let me save the file. Under applications I have tried using the doc reader and adobe to associate pdf's with firefox with no luck. I am running firefox 3.0.4. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you -- Bo Lynch

Hi, I know these are a few iptbales questions. NOT CentOS, anyway, I am running a firewall on centos 5.x. If you can response, it would be fine. I want to add a SNAT rule for one user in LAN to access one particular destination on the internet. Let's say www.centos.org I added the below rule. But . it does NOT work Pls assume 1.2.3.4 is the real ip of the firewall. ip address 192.168.101.230 is the client PC iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -s 192.168.101.230 -j SNAT --to-source 1.2.3.4 -d www.centos.org Any idea to achieve it? And Also, the below rule excludes 1 ip. it works fine. iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -m multiport -s ! 192.168.1.9 --destination-port 80,465,995 -j DNAT --to-destination :3128 I want to exclude about 4 or 5 ips. let's say 192.168.1.11, 192.168.1.19, 192.168.1.20,192.168.1.25 Is there a way to do it? Problem after power failure: no more sound in Flash

suspend/resume system crash

Hi all, I've installed CentOS 5.2 i386 (with all updates) on notebook Fujutsu Siemens Esprimo U9200 Suspending works normal, but after resuming my system crashes. There are no messages about that in /var/log/messages, only after reboot system I see in gnome: " Resume Problem Your system did not appear to resume correctly from Suspend/Hibernate. This may be a driver problem or a hardware problem. Check the GNOME Power Manager Manual for common problems. I have a location using a CentOS 5 server that's multihomed running Asterisk and iptables for internal web access. Recently some sales people got busted surfing some explicit content so the owner wants something in there to block this. I had heard of Dans Guardian and am reading about what's involved here but just wanted an opinion on what's the best solution for this. NTLM silent auth would be an asset, but the lan is simple and the owner doesn't need granular control if it would be complicated. What are you guys using with good results?/ Thanks? jlc

Anacron IS installed it is just that....

You have to have a system running for more than 65 minutes for it to run the daily cron jobs. And if this is a test system that you keep rebooting. Well. So if I want /var/log/rpmpkgs to get updated, I have to wait until the next day an keep the system up for a bit more than 65 minutes. Actually a quite reasonable requirement. Add this to my 'book': cron is your friend. Anacron is a better friend on a desktop linux system. And I suspect that nightly suspends will NOT trigger anacron. Though probably some time after coming out of suspension for that day anacron might run again. I will have to check this out on Saturday night (I suspend this system every friday afternoon).

I have been using Freebsd for along time. I have a client of mine that wants me to use Centos for his email server and web server. Anyway with Freebsd to update the packages file you use the following commands. portsnap fetch fetches all the current port trees portsnap update adds all the new ports to the tree on the server portupgrade -arR will install all the ports that are installed on the server. Now my question is what are the commands for Centos to fetch ,update and install, all the packages installed on the server. I would like to use Yum. Any help would be great. Missing /etc/log/rpmpkgs

On one system I am missing /etc/log/rpmpkgs I believe that this file is updated by some cron job, and maybe I just have not had this system powered up at the right time for the job to run. Though I had thought that if a job was scheduled for a time the computer was off, it would run sometime soon (with some definition of 'soon') once the system was on again. On another system, I have /etc/log/rpmpkgs, but a rpm I installed from the karan testing repo is shown installed in /etc/log/yum.log but not in rpmpkgs.

I have to build my own rpms for the HIPL project. I update my copy of the code and make rpm. Thing is the rpm name never changes from patch to patch. Is there a way to have yum apply the new code as an update and not have to erase then install?

how to disable slow repository mirror?

Using the yum-fastestmirror plugin on CentOS 5. The mirror that gets selected seems to be always the same one, and the particular one for my EPEL channel is slow as sin (often 30 kB/sec or less). Ctrl-C moves to the next one which is satisfactory, but it's a pain to have to do that every time. Is there a way to prevent a particular mirror from being selected? I can remove the entry from /var/cache/yum/epel/mirrorlist.txt, but it will come back at some point with a refresh. Mirroring Hard Drive

I have a 500GB Sata drive about 15% used I would like to make an exact copy of too another Sata 500GB drive as a spare. That way if something happens to the one in service I can plug in the spare quickly and restore one of the weekly backups without reinstalling the entire OS and all the little tweaks of setup on this mail/web server. How do I do this? That is make an exact bootable copy of a linux drive. Its running Centos 4.6 if that matters. Matt

Missing grub functionality on CentOS 5

There's grub 0.97 on CentOS 5. The manual at http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/index.html says it is for 0.97. However, it mentions for instance a program grub-set-default that is not present in grub-0.97-13.2. It also mentions grub.conf options savedefault and fallback. Are these available in the CentOS grub? I tried with savedefault and it does not create a /boot/grub/default as it should. So I have to assume that fallback isn't there either. The CentOS 5 grub is the same as the CentOS 4 grub and I would assume that it's the latest "legacy" grub, so it should include all that. Anyone knows why it doesn't? Anyone knows if it includes savedefault and fallback functionality? If so, how to make use of it? I downloaded the source and built (but not installed) it, that includes a grub-set-default file. I created a default file with it, but it's still not getting used by savedefault. So I must assume the functionality is not built in the CentOS grub. Strange error on login: $HOME/.dmrc?

Hi, Since this morning, when I login, GDM gives me an error message on login (it's in french, so I try to translate roughly): $HOME/.dmrc has been ignored, but it is responsible for saving sessions. It should not be writable for other users, and permissions should be 644. Now I had a look at this ~/.dmrc, and permissions were rw-------. So I did a chmod 644 on it (rw-r--r--) and logged back out... but the problem still persists. I'm puzzled. Any suggestions? Cheers, Niki

Hi team , We are runnig a system on CentOS 4.5 where we use a testing ERP system. Users have to login to it with telnet. When it reches about 60 telnet users, the remaing users will NOT be able to login. Hardware is , HP Pentium 4 Server with 4 Gb RAM . Pls Note we used the same system on a lower Machine with Redhat EL 3 until yesterday. But , it worked fine. @ that time, more than 100 users logined with telnet. Hi all, I have successfully got Xen virtualisation configured with CentOS 4 (64bit). However now that I am using the Xen Kernel my Dom0 doesn't seem to see the DVDROM device. Is this intentional in the kernel? Is there anything (apart from compiling my own kernel) that will enable the Dom0 to see the DVD-ROM device? In the yum priorities page on the wiki Akemi Yagi suggests http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities [base], [addons], [updates], [extras] ... priority=1 [centosplus],[contrib] ... priority=2 Third Party Repos ... priority=N (where N is > 10 and based on your preference) If you have rpmforge, kbs, epel all set up at 10 then wouldn't those also potentially overwrite each other if the same package exists in all of them? HAL automount luks device

Hi all, I have set up an encrypted partition on a usb key and can now successfully mount it using: cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/DEVICENODE cryptousb mount /dev/mapper/cryptousb /mountpoint My aim is now to do this using HAL and GNOME's Luks integration. I am already asked for the pass phrase after plugging in the device, but I seem to be not allowed to mount it. Do I need to add an fstab entry for the crypto container? Or do I need to modify some udev rules to allow unprivileged users to mount the container? Best Regards Marcus

Hi all, I am running squid proxy server integrated with Content filter Dansguardian, squidguard and clamav for Http level scanning on centos 5 .Configured webmin management tool to create and manage access control using squidguard plug in. Now it is serving request for 100 machines and Below is my hardware details. Hardware Details SUN BLADE 6000 2.67 GHz * 1 4 Gb RAM 2*146Gb HDD we intend to scale proxy servers with around 7000 to 10000 users in future.Just i want to confirm whether the the above hardware is sufficient enough to serve 10000 users.If not please recommend me the server configuration i have to go for and also how to calculate the same. And also to prevent single point of failure is it possible to configure squid in any load balancing mode (with another dedicated server) if so just guide me how to do the same or provide me the link that best explains squid proxy server in load balancing mode. My OQO boxes have the AR5413 wifi chipset, so for the first time in quite a while, I again need to run madwifi. So I went looking for the dkms madwifi rpms, but could not find them. They use to be on rpmforge, as I recall. dkms is there. So have I lost some memory cells or have these rpms taken a hike?

Hi, I want to take snapshots of a iSCSI devices from a target that hasn't snapshot/cloning capabilities (it's a Infortrend A16E storage array). What method are you using to make snapshots/clones of iSCSI targets using Open-iSCSI + CentOS? What about using Open-iSCSI + LVM snapshots system? For example: - Take a LVM snapshot in the initiator with "lvcreate". - Give read-only access to the backup server, for the same LUN/volume. - In the backup server, mount in read-only mode this snapshot. - Take a backup of this snapshot, using dd/tar/rsync for example. - Unmount the snapshot in the backup server. - Remove this snapshot from the host with "lvremove". GRUB Timeout problem

I recently installed CentOS 5.1 on a DL71 ASI notebook. After my yum update the timeout parameter in /boot/grub/grub.conf file has no effect. It sits at the grub screen forever unless I press the enter key to select a kernel, at which point it will boot. I've done some similar types of setups: 1) The first setup included two physical machines running separate Xen VMs with the critical data on a DRBD store: Setup was quite easy using docs for DRBD and HA on the HowtoForge site. No difference in using the Xen environment except that I used a second NIC instead of a serial cable. Works great for a webserver. I was also running the CentOS directory server with this setup until I got replication working. 2) Second setup was to place the heartbeat on the physical machines. On failure, it would autostart the Xen VM. It worked, but was a PITA to get right. The reason to do this was to only use resources when the machine failed, rather than allocating the 1G constantly. I'm currently trying to get live VM migration running under Xen.

Help on deleting partitions

Hi, I have this dual boot Vista-CentOS. I have one NTFS for Vista, and three for CentOS. I boot to both OS through grub. Unfortunately, I'm going to need the CentOS space for Vista :( :( :( So my question is: if I remove the CentOS partitions *from within Vista* with its tool for it, will I be able to still boot Vista ? Is grub going to disappear ? If so, will Vista replace it for its own boot manager, thus allowing to boot it ? Or what ? I've googled about it, but couldn't find a definitive answer and I can't afford losing my Vista data. Any help would be appreciated. Warm Regards, Mário

Hi all, I want to start experimenting with clusters, and I would like to use normal desktop grade hardware for this. I have some extra PC components lying around, enough to build 3 - 4 moderate desktops with a PIV / C2D CPU & 512MB - 1GB RAM each. All the machines should have at least a 100MB NIC, but I can add a gigabit NIC to the machines that doesn't have it if need be. I have used Linux Heartbeat to failover a MySQL cluster before, and it's actually been running very well for about 3 years now. But, I want to start looking @ total clustering, with DRBD - where everything (not just MySQL) is being replicated across the 4 machines. I'm also intereated in load balancing. Has anyone done anything like this? The cluster will be running / hosting a few XEN Virtual Machines, and idealy if one PC / server dies (hardware failure / power failure / etc), then on of the other machines should still be running the virtual machines, i.e. no downtime. Sound problem in Dell inspiron 1525

After installing CentOS 5.2 on my Dell inspiron 1525 laptop, the sound was inactive, I then installed Alsa-Driver, Alsa-utils, Alsa-plugins and Alsa-libs the ATrpms site. The speakers then work fine, but when I plug in headphones, the sound begins to fade out and eventually becomes completely quiet. I have checked the Volume Manager and nothing is muted including the Headphones volume, when I unplug the headphones the speakers are also quiet. The sound card is a HDA-INTEL. Any suggestions and solutions? NOTE: THE SPEAKERS WORK FINE, THE PROBLEM ONLY OCCURS THE MOMENT I PLUG IN HEADPHONES. HOW CAN I USE HEADPHONES?

system-config-network crash

I have been trying to get a EVDO modem to work with Centos 5 and earlier this evening I used system-config-network to add it to the system. how to rescan serial ports without reboot

Hi all, I hope this is possible. I have a server, with a network switch attached to the serial port, and I want to rescan the serial port (/dev/tty) to see if it picks it up? Strange UserID Issue

Hi Guys, I have a setup where i have a user named root4 whose uid and gid are set to 0 so that it behaves as root user. The root user has ssh keys configured to access other servers . In the existing setup all other servers with similar setup shows whoami as root ,though i login with the username root4. In one of the servers all of a sudden it shows as root4 instead of root. The only change i did a day ago was installed fluxbox and k3b for burning dvd-backups in the server itself. Since it shows whoami as root4. ssh checks /home/root4/.ssh for ssh keys instead of checking in /root/.ssh/ so i have to copy all the keys manually from default location to /home/root4/.ssh to get the ssh key based authentication working . This machine runs centos 4.5 Id still shows uid =0 (root4) gid=0(root) groups=0(root) but its supposed to show uid =0 (root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root) Earlier all files in /home/root4 are owned by user and group root.root now it shows root4. root. i checked the passwd file last modification date and it hasnt been changed for months. root4:x:0:0::/home/root4/:/bin/bash selinux is disabled $HOME=/home/root4 -- which is normal. I dont know why it behaves all of a sudden. does anyone have experienced similar problem ? Where should i look for to fix this issue ? Any help would be much appreciated. -- Regards, Mohan.

I have small xen VM running centos4 which acts as a router/firewall, and has been working fine for over 1.5 years with 32MB of RAM and a kernel I either got from xensource.org or built myself from their sources. (centos 4 didn't have a xen kernel back then) I lost the kernel to a corrupted disk and decided to use the centos provided xen kernel. All these months 32MB + 64MB Swap was more than sufficient and I never had any problems.(3-digit uptimes) The CentOS Xen kernel is unusable at 32MB and invokes the OOM killer even though there is plenty of swap free (and about 5-10MB of RAM too). After the OOM killer has done it's job there's about 15 MB of RAM free and swap is hardly used at all (1MB at most) I've increased RAM to 64MB and the OOM killer doesn't kick in.. but I am seeing plenty of such messages in the logs ... Looking for uuid-devel

Just pulled the lastest patches to HIPL (well the last replay was 11/24, so a number of nights behind) and tried a 'make rpm' and got the error: error: Failed build dependencies: uuid-devel is needed by hipl-1.0.4-1.i386 And I can'd find any rpm that has this module. I have tried different things in yum and have not found it. resolvedep, whatprovides, info, list. Nada. I did find a uuidd, but I can't see what files it contains. Note that the author of whatever patch hit me with this dependency is most likely NOT using Centos or even Fedora as their development platform. Where can I find uuid-devel????

Reassemble software RAID

I have a machine on CentOS 5 with two disks in RAID1 using Linux software RAID. /dev/md0 is a small boot partition, /dev/md1 spans the rest of the disk(s). /dev/md1 is managed by LVM and holds the system partition and several other partitions. I had to take out disk sda from the RAID and low level format it with the tool provided by Samsung. Now I put it back and want to reassemble the array. Machine boots fine from sdb and I was able to re-add /dev/sda1 to /dev/md0 easily. However, I can't do the same with /dev/sda2 to /dev/md1 because there's no /dev/md1 anymore and mdadm tells me it doesn't have the RAID superblock. If possible I want to avoid deleting the already existing setup and data. I'm wondering what I shall do next. Can I simply create /dev/md1 as if it was a new array? Is the problem created by the fact that the running system was booted from a logical volume on /dev/sda2? Should I better boot the system from a live CD and then reassemble/create anew /dev/md1? In general, would it be better to *not* put the main system on a logical volume on a RAID partition? (The other logical volumes carry virtual machines.) Anyone with experience with mini itx and Centos4?

I am looking to buy a small MB with dual NICs, but I woul like them to be supported directly by the stock kernel. I remember that gigabit nics can be a problem. I think this one (http://www.jetway-mini-itx.com/j7f4-j7f4k1g5d.html) uses the RealteK RTL8110SC and if so (https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?forum=45&topic_id=6983&v… ode=threaded) might still be true. LDAP Authentication and Authorisation.

Hello all, At my current job the time has come to unify our LDAP infrastructure into one tree (preferably). The basics are working but we are not sure how to restrict which users can log into which machines. What we would like is for everyone in the (for example) "infra" group to log into all machines while people in the "development" group can only log into development servers. From an initial Google my options seem to be: * LDAP based netgroups * OpenSSH - AllowGroups, DenyGroups * PAM - mod_access Does anyone have any real world, in the trenches experience they would be willing to share? I would like to know which is the most maintainable and easy to hand-over to more junior admins. Thanks, Fred.

Hi, After searching the archive I found one post (last october) complaining about lack of kmod-drbd2 rpm for the lastest kernels. Almost two months have passed and no sign of the rpm I was wondering if the mantainer has some news about it. Thanks.

Two NFS issues

Hi, I was hoping someone would have an idea of what's going on here... We have two NFS issues. One of which is certainly centos based, one of which we're not sure of. First issue is: As of Centos 5, we can't make simultaneous access to a directory via NFS. To duplicate, I cd into a share in two windows, copy a 1G file in the first window, and just do an ls in the other. The ls will hang until the write is done. Turning off apic seems to help a little, but there's still a very significant hang. This problem is not apparent in centos 4.x, even when mounting to the same NFS server. The other problem is - we're seeing tremendous slowdowns when going through an Acopia NFS virtualization server. These slowdowns got much more severe when we moved to Centos 5.2. If we connect to the NFS appliance directly, these slowdowns don't exist. Has anyone seen problems like this? How did you solve them? Thanks. --Russell

Just started getting this. I tried the following by adding it to my etc/sysctl.conf: net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh1 = 4096 net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh2 = 8192 net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh3 = 8192 net.ipv4.neigh.default.base_reachable_time = 86400 net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_stale_time = 86400 That pretty much locked things up. Then I tried another googled solution: echo 256 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/neigh/default/gc_thresh1 echo 512 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/neigh/default/gc_thresh2 echo 1024 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/neigh/default/gc_thresh3 And adding it also to etc/sysctl.conf: net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh1 = 256 net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh2 = 512 net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh3 = 1024 Still not working. Any ideas? TIA

following Centos wiki headless install, but applying to FC10

I have successfully built an install CD following the instructions at: http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/VncHeadlessInstall Now I am trying to do the same with FC10 and I am failing in two ways. I have tried to find a similar howto for even FC9, but have not found the right google magic. The first problem should be small. When I set isolinux.cfg to start with: prompt 1 timeout 0 I still get prompted. There is quite a bit more to the beginning of the FC10's isolinux.cfg so that might account for it. But fortunately I do have a keyboard of sorts and a monitor of sorts so I can get to my menu select for remote vnc install. The install then proceeds and gets to setting up eth0, but fails. It seems like dhcp is not succeeding. If I boot from the standard FC10 CD, hdcp does work. Here is my append line: append initrd=initrd.img vnc vncconnect=10.8.6.15 headless ip=dhcp ksdevice=eth0 meth od=http://server.foo.com/fedora/10/os/i386 lang=en_US keymap=us All these commands are listed at: http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25826 Any pointers to where to get help on this?

[CentOS] Apache, SELinux, and document root on a different partition

I want to put the document root for an application on a separate paritition that has more space. When I try to configure this I can't access the files in the new location. I've got the SELinux attributes set on the directory and its files, so I'm thinking it's something about the parent path that SELinux doesn't like, but I don't know where that's handled. chmod for directories only

I want to change the permissions on directories, recursively to: drwxr-xr-x but keep the files within the directory tree as: -rw-r--r-- But I can't find an option for chmod to only affect directories. I suppose it won't hurt (in this case) to set the x for the files, but I want some consistancy.

Mail and list server downtime

Hello, there will be a downtime of the mail and list server tomorrow evening from around 20:00 UTC and a few (hopefully) hours after that. This means that there will be no mail traffic at that time to and from centos.org domains. We need to move away mail from the current machine to a new machine, as our old mailserver is a bit unreliable at the moment (the hardware is showing its age). After the move everything will work exactly as before, only faster, bigger and better. Thanks for your understanding, Ralph

question on yum-downloadonly

Hi I found yum-downloadonly and executed my command do that and save the dependencies in my current directory. Now when I execute my command: rpm -i mypackage all the dependencies are not found even though they are in the current directory. if I do a "yum install mypackage" (and its in the current directory) its not found either. How do I now install the mypackage in the current directory and look for all dependencies in the current directory? Thanks, Jerry
