Yum loses memory when kernel is upgraded

Centos 5.x Why could this be? After I loaded a xen kernel (by mistake), yum seemed to lose its knowledge of my CentOS version. I had that fixed by "yum install centos-release" (I had first to fix the repo addresses for this to succeed). But after that, I noticed that yum did not remember anymore, what packages were already installed. It seems that the something happens to the rpm databases. I think this is connected to kernel upgrades - that is, every time I update the kernel, the rpm databases are spoiled... (or something). Right now both of these commands: yum list installed rpm --query -a ...produce identical results (for practical purposes). Neither list contains for example amavisd-new, which I'm sure I have installed. Running the installer from working linux

I have a box, with no CD rom or accessible ports and no PXE boot support. I do have root access. I would like to install a fresh copy of Centos 4. VMWare Sandbox

I need to experiment with ldap for a site I manage, and wondered if vmware would be a good way to go for some testing. My current server is RHEL3, which is getting dated, and I think that I should refresh this server entirely in the move to ldap. We need to have an ldap server for publishing email addresses for a VPN for a nursing home that the upstream can harvest and we can browse to send confidential patient records. RHEL3 prollie won't cut it, so I'm considering moving to CentOS5. If I get a nice working test environment working, I wondered about running the server on VMWare, because the hardware will likely need to be refreshed in 2 years anyways. Copying the vmware file and the data to a new server would make for a fast upgrade. Any feedback on what I am attempting to do here? Any other recommendations on how I should tackle this? Currently I'm using Samba 3 with passdb. It's nothing fancy, but it works. We have about 20 XP machines here. The server also hosts mail as well. -- -=/>Thom

Help with TCL/TK on centos 5.2 unknown color black

Hi all, I am using centos 5.2 x86_64 on a box. and getting this error: wish -f pcalert.tcl Error in startup script: unknown color name "black" (processing "-background" option) invoked from within "canvas .c -height $canvas_height -width $screen_width -background black -highlightthickness 0 " invoked from within "set c [canvas .c -height $canvas_height -width $screen_width -background black -highlightthickness 0 ]" (file "pcalert.tcl" line 138) I take the same script on 3 other machines with centos 5.2 x86_64 and it runs just fine. Off-topic: Problems after upgrade RHEL 4.5 to 5.2

Hi After upgrading a machine from RHEL-4.5 to 5.2, the Gnome doesn't start anymore. There are strange messages when I issue the command "startx" (I'm using inittab=3). The message is nautilus: symbol lookup error: /usr/local/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: pango_language_get_default Where is the information to "nautilus" look in /usr/local/bin? Adding another swap

Hi ALL, I have a harddisk with 3 primary partitions and one extended partitions. Under extented partions , there are 15 partions. Whole hard disk has been partitioned in a standard way, (i.e NOT LVM) It has 2GB ram. swap is also 2GB. Now I want to extend this swap to 4 GB. If I use dd coomand and create a file with 2GB, Will I be able to extend the swap witn swapon commnad? How can I achive this? Hope to hear form you, -- Thank you Indunil Jayasooriya

SATA errors on CentOS 5.2

We have a new machine here that we are trying to use for CentOS as a base for our primary application. nfs and permissions

My CentOS box is my server for data and some services, including nfs shares. On my laptop I have folderviews displaying two directories on the server, via nfs mounts. An fstab line mounts each, such as: 192.168.0.40:/home /mnt/borg2_home nfs nosuid,exec,rw,bg,soft,intr 0 0 From the folderview I have no problem accessing the files and directories. Now comes the problem. I use kontact, with imap mail (working fine) and a calendar/diary (korganizer) mounted as a remote file. At least, I did, until this new install. I can give it the path, but I don't see any entries. I suspect that it is a permissions problem, but I can't see anything obvious. The firewall is temporarily disabled. Any ideas. please? Anne

How to get Bugzilla working on CentOS 5.2 with SELinux turned on?

Hi. Has anyone figured out how to get Bugzilla working on CentOS 5.2 WITHOUT TURNING OFF SELINUX? I've run chcon -R --reference=/var/www/html /path/to/bugzilla and added the following module (generated by audit2allow), but am still getting errors in my Web browser tryinig to use Bugzilla: Software error: Can't connect to the database. Error: could not connect to server: Permission denied Is the server running on host "localhost" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? Is your database installed and up and running? Do you have the correct username and password selected in localconfig? Closing a multi-session disk

I have a disk which is not being recognised for reading, and I suspect that it may be a multi-session disk which has not been closed. K3b seems to agree with me, since it lists it as an appendable data cd. However, I can't find any way to close the session in k3b. I thought I remembered that it was possible to do that in xcdroast - which is almost certainly the application that burned the disk in the first place. However, xcdroast tells me that no disk is loaded. That brings me to ask those of you that use command-line burning if you know of any way I can close this disk. I suspect the files on it are ones that I don't have elsewhere. Anne

rpm spec question

Hi I am trying to package a bunch of files so that i can deploy them with rpm - Its prtty much just a case of dumping some files on the filesystem. I achieve this with rpm without issue however when i remove the rpm from the system it also removes the dir that contains the files, even though i dont specify this in the %postun. Is there a way to tell rpm to NOT remove files/dir's that it creates unless i request it? thanks

This is not CentOS-specific, hence OT. I need a list of all email users on my system (there are hundreds of them). The list could be extracted from /etc/aliases and the virtusertable. Does anyone know of a script that would do this automatically? It would have to - exclude commented-out lines (of course) - exclude duplicates - produce a list of usernames (or maybe unresolved email addresses for some users) separated by a comma I imagine perl would be the way to go. I haven't used perl at all myself. Hi, I am trying to build the driver for the TI USB 3410/5052 family of devices. Specifically, I am trying to hook up a MultiTech GSM modem. I have the source for the driver which came with the modem. However, I beating my head against the wall trying to get around the usb-serial.h not found error. I have found references saying usb-serial.h has been moved. Even though I have pulled down kernel-2.6.9-78.src.rpm I can not find the .h to make things compile. Any assistance would be greately appreciated (a prebuilt driver would be even better). Hi, I installed Panda antivirus for linux but it uses Dazuko module for updating virus definition downloaded from internet to virus definitions database. I recently put Cent 5.2 (64 bit) on a new server using a Supermicro pdsbm-ln2+ sys board. I did the original installation at home using the 5.2 dvd I got via torrent. I turned it over to my NOC tech and it went right online so he ran yum update. With the most recent kernel, which went in with the update, the server hung on grub (after reboot). He did a fresh (minimal) Centos installation and once again ran update, but again the new kernel wouldn't load. The machine is set up RAID 1 with two Seagate 250 GB sata drives. Nothing fancy, just cheapo 7200 rpm stuff. I wish I could be more specific, but I wasn't present during the update and failure. None the less, I would appreciate all the opinions and feedback you folks can offer. I'll have the server back here in a couple of days. In the meanwhile, I'd like to get some ideas that could help me resolve this issue. I put the system board manual on my server at: http://hwy39.net/centos/Supermicro_PDSBM-LN1-LN2-LN2+_Manual.pdf . Question re RHEL 5.3

I've heard now from more than one source about problems with CentOS (and RH) at least up through 5.2 w.r.t. SATA drive handling, and I've even reported on this myself in this list before. My question is, do we have any idea if 5.3 has any improvements in this area? One of my cohorts here, who happens to be a Fedora fan, says that these problems are fixed in F9, but I have grave concerns about putting an enterprise lifeline main application on any Fedora release. If 5.3 solves these issues, I'd much rather go with that. Any ideas? Any places I might look to see for myself? Thanks. mhr

LDAP and expired passwords

CentOS 5.2 with OpenLDAP 2.3.27, nss_ldap_253.13, using TLS, i686 and x86_64. If a user with an expired password (shadowLastChange + shadowMax < current day) logs in to a system where ldap.conf points first to a consumer-only LDAP server, the password change operation (exop) proceeds and fails with: LDAP password information update failed: Referral If I comment out "ssl start_tls", the referral to the master is followed and the password change operation succeeds. I've found references to problems with earlier releases of pam_ldap when referrals were not properly followed when using TLS, and these are supposed to be fixed; apparently not in my case. Can anyone hit me with the clue stick? The relationship between udev and MAKEDEV

Hi People, Recently an issue where I was trying to changed the group and permission associated with the device /dev/net/tun. As I knew devices were controlled by udev I went looking at its configuration and found this rule 50-udev.rules:KERNEL=="tun", NAME="net/%k". Some research on the web suggested that modifying the default rules was a bad idea and that you should in fact override them with your own custom rules. So I tried setting up a custom rule, this failed. I then tried modifying the default rule this also failed. A helpful response from here pointed me to MAKEDEV and I was able to change /etc/makedev.d/01linux-2.6.x to do what I wanted. But this has raised a couple of questions for me. 1. If udev doesn't directly control the creation of this device why is there a udev rule for it? 2. Is modifying /etc/makedev.d/01linux-2.6.x likely to cause me issues in future ? My investigation to date has led to me to believe that devices listed in /etc/udev/makedev.d/ are the devices that you always want to be present on a system rather than relying on something about your systems Hardware configuration to lead to a device being created. Is this correct ? Thank you for any thoughts / information you can share relating to this.

I have a machine with 64GB of memory in our lab. We have memory demanding processes and natually swap gets used. However when these processes are gone and the system is idle, we still see swap being used. Is this normal behavior? TIA

Picasa vs. native photo management apps

Hi, I'm running a small business (http://www.microlinux.fr) offering various services around GNU/Linux, among which migrating folks from Windows to Linux. On server and desktops, I'm using CentOS exclusively. I know, Fedora would be more suitable, but I like the solidity of CentOS, and I can always build the odd missing bits myself from Fedora SRPMS. My heavily customized CentOS-based desktop is very solid and production-proof (in use in all the public libraries around here). One request that I got more often lately is Google Picasa. I vaguely remember having downloaded and installed it once. As far as I know, it's a closed-source Windows app that comes with a WINE emulation layer. Not exactly the open source spirit. As far as I'm concerned, I manage all my photos with some very basic tools: GThumb, Nautilus, GIMP, and that's it. Are there some tasks one performs with Picasa that one can't perform with these native programs? Or is there some other well-made photo management software that you can recommend as a replacement for Picasa? Cheers, Niki Kovacs

Alle, Here is our situation: Our customer leases their machines from us and contract us to to manage them (as far as all systems administration issues). The customer does not have root access to any machine (by their own choice, as they want us to be responsible if something goes awry). In the case of their web servers, we handle all configuration, they manage the content. We make changes to the configuration as necessary to support their content. There is one machine (RHEL5.2) that they are developing on that will become a production box. They have sudo access to manage mysql functions as well as the apache server. The location does not affect the app. None of the other web servers we manage for them use the RHEL apache default, they all have customized locations for content and scripts. In case you do not, What I use is a combination of scoring within SpamAssassin on the public RBLs and maintaining my own RBL on my local mail servers (See http://www.corpit.ru/mjt/rbldnsd.html) I got too many false positives off publicly available RBLs, but adding up the number of RBLs a sender 'hits' made my SpamAssassin scoring method VERY ACCURATE! Hello guys, my scenario is following 1. I have LVM group named "system" 2. I have a logical volumes - system/root , ext3 mounted as / (20GB) - system/swap, swap - system/home, ext3 mounted as /home (431GB) I need to shrink system/home to 80GB (currently there is 57GB used) and use free space to create another logical volumes. My scenario is 1. reduce ext3 fs size to 80GB by using resize2s 2. reduce system/home size by using lvreduce 3. create another logical volumes Questions 1. How can i be sure that i will shrink ext3 to exact size 80GB and that the same will lvreduce do? I do not want to cut from ext3 filesystem if i will reduce logical volume too much 2. Can you please send me commands to achieve 1) and 2) part of my scenario? 3. Or can i just use lvreduce and my ext3 will shrink automatically? 4. Do i need to umount system/home when resizing? I have a choice of CentOS 4/5 and Fedora 9 on a laptop. I have not use CentOS 5 on a desktop but have used CentOS 4 and Fedora 9. I found the Fedora Gnome not as appealing as the CentOS 4 clearlooks. Any opinions from someone who has used CentOS 4/5 and Fedora? I'm not a KDE fan so KDE users need not reply. Regards, Vandaman.

We are seeing very similar behavior. It has gotten better since we complained to IX but we still see a significant lag the first time the site loads. The fast load on subsequent visits could be explained by Drupal doing some caching of needed items so it doesn't have to go to the database. The initial site load time became much more noticeable after IX took some kind of hit on their DB server. All we know is the site suddenly couldn't connect to the database, they fixed something on their end and the database came back but we've had the long lag for first load ever since. changing partition priority on install

Greetings. I am in the process of installing 5.1 64 bit on a server. The server has 2 3ware cards: 9550SX 12 port, and a 8006 2 port, both SATA. I want the 8006 board to be /dev/sda, and the 9550 to be /dev/sdb. My plan is to install the os on /dev/sda (8006), and data on /dev/sdb (9550). Unfortunately, the 9550 comes up as /dev/sda. The 8006 is installed in slot 3, which is a 100Mhz slot. The 9550 is installed in Slot 4, which is a 133Mhz slot. I really don't want to put the 9550 in the 100Mhz slot. I'm not even sure it would make a difference... I would also prefer to not have grub reside on /dev/sda, while the os is on /dev/sdb. I have tried to change the boot priority in bios, but this hasn't changed the priority. I tried to disable one of the boards in the bios, but that didn't seem to have any effect. Interestingly enough, when I boot with the Knoppix 5.1.1 live cd, the cards show up as I want them to. I have searched Google, but I am either entering the wrong search parameters, or there isn't anything out there, at least pertaining to the initial installation. Any ideas are appreciated. Hi all, The CentOS community is pretty limited in what we can do to the core distribution. Since our mantra is "aiming to be 100% compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux" we cannot fix bugs or improve the CentOS core without waiting for Red Hat to make those modifications first. We have limited leverage and a 6-month release cycle against us. But that is not the complete truth, Red Hat usually has an internal, a vendor and a public beta period and everything that is found within that time-frame might get fixed before it is being shipped (and frozen) for the next 6 months. Hi All; I ran Linux as my main laptop OS for several years, then I got into a mac shop and bought a macbook. The macbook is ok but it just doesn't cut it per productivity so I've ordered another laptop (a 64bit laptop with 8G of memory expandable to 16G and 2 internal 320G 7200rpm drives) I'll be loading Linux as soon as the machine arrives from Dell. Here's my questions: 1) Are there any published plans for CentOS to support KDE4, or is there a way to upgrade CentOS to KDE4 ? 2) Does anyone know if Kpilot is working with Palm Centro phones ? Is there a better solution besides Kpilot ? 3) Does Kmail support Exchange yet ? 4) Is there a way to migrate apple mail messages to Kmail ? 5) Is there a way to migrate apple address book and calendar events to the KDE address book and calendar ? Installer stopped short

Hi, I just tried to install a CentOS 5 desktop on very recent hardware, an Acer desktop machine. The installer stopped short very early. I gave Ubuntu 8.04 a shot, and it installed without a problem. Now what can I do about this? Is there a way to use some "enhanced" kernel (like the centos.plus kernel) to perform the install? I guess what's missing there is a specific driver for something (SATA drive? Processor?). Any suggestions? Niki

Problem with svn/apache

I hope someone can help me with this b/c I'm stumped... I had set up an svn repository a while ago with an apache/webdav front end using the default centos packages. For some reason this morning it stopped working for me - it would give me a 403 error. I suppose the problem is with Apache and not svn. So far I've checked the following: I use a couple of files called svn_htpasswd_file (for userids/password hashes) and svn_auth_file (users, groups and permissions) - I verified the files were still apache:apache and were user-readable Just for grins I ran "chown -R apache:apache" on my repository home directory and all repositoriesI made a new user entry in the two files listed above with full admin rightsI restarted httpd and rebooted the serverI made sure the httpd processes were running using apache as userAnd I've run out of ideas. I am doing some testing with XForms and I really need a separate instance of Firefox, one that shares nothing with my primary instance that has various reference works and web sites open, to test forms. Is this even possible? I have a sense from the small bit of testing that I have done that even with separate profiles and invoking the firefox process manually from different terminal windows does not provide a completely separate running instance on the desktop. I have a CentOS 5.2 server running Apache 2.2.3 (yum installed) and drupal 6.5 on ESX 3.5. We're using Name Based Virtual Hosting on it - 2 hosts. The problem is that when I pull up a web page after not having accessed it for ~15+ minutes it takes between 10-12s to load fully. The 2nd page, 3rd page - and sometimes more than that - take between 8-12 second. After that - decent performance, though not great (0.3s to 2s). Wait ~15 minutes, maybe more, maybe less, and it goes back to slow. While it's been most apparent with httpd, I've noticed similar slowness with the initial ssh session, etc. I know what you're thinking. DNS problem, right? Yeah, me too. But for the life of me I can't find a problem. This is at a colocation site where we have other servers - all of those are just fine. We've got an almost identical box internally - working just fine. I can do an nslookup off of each of our different internal name servers and get identical and immediate responses. I've done tcpdumps (both on the client and the server). It shows the request gets to the server immediately. I've started httpd using strace and not seen anything glaringly wrong (though I'm not well versed in the output I have enough C under my belt to have an idea what's going on). Thinking it was code that the developer working on the project I pulled all the custom drupal modules out and it's still slow. Even created another virtual host with a stock drupal install and it's slow (identical results). I moved the mysql server from local to our central DB server. Load avg never gets above ~0.10 so I don't think the box is stressed. Watching the ESX load average it looks good too. I've tried a hell of a lot of other things and tried to include all the relevant information so apologies in advance for anything I might have left out. Is there something (even beta would do) in CentOS to read and understand about this? OT- On Fossils: While I cannot claim "Fossil state" anywhere near some of the people who were doing cards -- I knew about them though -- when I was born, I have had my spell flicking switches to select boot device on a Texas Instrument DS 990 switching between the "Washing machine" disk and the 9" tape drive. (Now this is in India when a lot of restrictions -- both by Indian and other governments -- were there in Technology imports) The interesting part of it was the entirely memory mapped design and barely a few registers... and then in Prime 750 which had 5 huge boards which constituted a CPU. and a "hefty" amount of RAM -- 8MB. The thigs is they worked 24x7 and we were required to give a month's notice before shutting them down / rebooting unless there was a breakdown which was very rare. I had a 5.0 kickstart server which did "core" installs of CentOS (i.e.: "%packages --nobase"). I recently setup a 5.2 kickstart server. Using the same kickstart configs, I notice a few packages are always missing, notably: yum (!!), selinux-policy-targeted (even though I have "selinux --enforcing" in the kickstart, it always ends up with that package missing and selinux disabled), vim-minimal, etc. Looking at comps.xml for 5.2 os tree, it shows all of these packages in the "core" group, just like 5.0 does. So it's not that the "core" group has changed. Looking at the Release Notes for 5.2, I see this entry: "Kickstart scripts that worked for 5.0 and/or 5.1 may have issues on CentOS 5.2 installation trees. So first test your kickstart scripts with CentOS 5.2 before using them in production." I'm guessing this has something to do with my problem, but there's no further details. Does anyone have any insight into the above Release Notes entry, and/or my problem in general? p.s. I setup a 2nd kickstart server in a completely different environment, and am still seeing the same issue. I'm about to try a CD-based install of 5.2 and see if that also has the issue. johnn

Hi How to get rid of kerberos, or at least to prevent to go into path? Where is defined the path for users? Minimal CentOS

Hi! and a warm hello to the CentOS team. I have a work for which I need some solution from you. Actually we have some thin clients where we want to put a light weight Linux distro for users. As of now I have tested with Fedora and Ubuntu distros but the issue I am finding is they are not able to fit in my requirement of flash based hard disk consumption (~500 MB). although a distro named TinyME which is a custom version of PCLinuxOS seems to be very near and with a little customization by putting XFCE it was around 600MB. but it is not well known and supported. I have also tried CentOS 5 and 4 (with bare minimum installation) but it is coming little heavy, however later on I came across a link (http://www.owlriver.com/tips/tiny-centos/) providing a kickstart file for a bare minimum CentOS 4. It gave me CentOS 4 which ate around 400 MB. However it was little near to my specs but without a usable Desktop (KDE and Gnome seems to be out of question because of heavy size). Now I need some suggestions from you to make it work on my system. I need a light version of CentOS (I am very much particular about OS identity and the final product will retain the parent OS identity and quality). Can you provide me some kickstart file or something else which can help me in making a final thing. I do not need eye candies/OpenOffice/Adobe flash/Games/Media Player etc. Just a usable desktop, a lightweight file browser and desktop with icons (may be XFE). Redundant locale, man, doc, /lib/modules etc. will be removed as well. Karan told me that he heard someone installing CentOS 5 in 500MB. Can anyone point me in right direction. any kickstart file or iso will be of great help. I am trying to install 5.2 on a new dv7z hp laptop. I use "linux noapic nolapic iommu=off " and I get a kernel dump on rtl8169. I dont need the network to install? how do I ignore the rtl8169 to install. I tried noprobe and then it doesnt recognize my SATA HD controller and I dont know yet which driver to select as I cant do an lspci to see??? THanks, Jerry

When you use --no-depchk with this tool, does this actually turn off the dependency check in the final rpm as well? Reading docs about this I am not sure and I just installed an rpm that I know I am missing the deps for and built with this switch and it installed fine? Thanks, jlc

Hello, I'm building another kickstart CD, minimal, and creating my own repository. Is there any way I can get the list of files that a group (like @core o @base) will install? HI folks, If this is the wrong forum for this question, please let me know (with a gentle pointer to the right place)...TIA for that. I've started to receive some 'Severe Errors' in my nightly logwatch emails. As the system had been initially misconfigured for logwatch emails, I've only recently begun to receive them, so I'm not entirely sure when this started. rtl8169 kernel dump

I installed 5.2 x86_64 on a new hp dv7z laptop using noprobe on the install line. After rebooting the rtl8169 causes the kernel to dump. Is there a parameter I can pass to it (somehow) to avoid the kernel dump??? Thanks, Jerry

Sendmail and pmtu discovery

We have an issue with some customers who refuse to accept ICMP traffic to their mail servers. It seems that they have put Mordac, preventer of information services in charge of their firewall policy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minor_characters_in_Dilbert#Mordac) My mail logs are showing that customers who specifically disallow ICMP traffic have many "Connection Reset" entries in our logs: Oct 14 08:00:50 mailsrv sendmail[2024]: m9ED0Yf5002021: to=<customername(a)customer.org>, delay=00:00:16, xdelay=00:00:16, mailer=esmtp, pri=42476, relay=mail.customer.org. [XX.XX.XX.XX], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Connection reset by mail.customer.org. I have disabled pmtu discovery on our routers as well as on all our outbound mail servers. Is there anything else I can do on our side to help the situation?

Problem selecting installation drive : 5.2

When doing the 5.2 installation the ONLY drive option provided is mapper/nvidia_cbjcdhfe (250G) My system has 2 SATA - 250G drives and I want to use them in a RAID/LVM configuration. My question: How do I get the installer to let me use DiskDruid to create RAID1 arrays and then use LVM for the mount points? What I've done so far: I've verified that both drives are recognized by going to the shell screen and using fdisk to access both /dev/sda and /dev/sdb - so I know they are both available. I've also tried using the Centos 4.7 installer where I can do exactly what I want. I've accepted the default and after a full install of 5.2 there is no raid and total space is 250G. Apparently no swap configured

Hello, I'm in a slightly unusual situation and I'd really appreciate some advice. I installed CentOS 5.2 on a server about a month ago. Today I happened to check the 'free' command and noticed that the Swap line reads as follows: Swap: 0 0 0 I'm pretty certain that when I installed the OS and created a custom partition table, that I defined a swap partition, but there is no swap line in /etc/fstab either. However the output of 'lvm> lvdisplay' contains the following information (amongst others): --- Logical volume --- LV Name /dev/VolGroup00/swap VG Name VolGroup00 LV UUID 7uOBcj-tN16-uAbO-3nyy-3scZ-SAEA-7HKWPW LV Write Access read/write LV Status available # open 0 LV Size 1.94 GB Current LE 62 Segments 1 Allocation inherit Read ahead sectors auto - currently set to 256 Block device 253:5 Also 'ls' confirms that logical volume exists: [root@mail ~]# ls -l /dev/VolGroup00/swap lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Sep 30 11:30 /dev/VolGroup00/swap -> /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-swap I'd like to know: 1. How can I check how this logical volume is formatted (and if it is formatted)? 2. Is it possible to use this logical volume? If I add a line to /etc/fstab, what are the chances of rendering my system unbootable? The server is in use and presently doesn't have any memory problems, and while it's not mission critical server I'd rather not mess it up with any ill-thought out tinkering. Help with custom udev rule

Hi, I am trying create a custom udev rule to change the group and permissions on /dev/net/tun. Some research indicated that rather than directly editing the rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules that I should create my own local rules file something like 10-local.rules which contains KERNEL=="tun", NAME="net/%k", OWNER="root", GROUP="vboxusers", MODE="0660" But unfortunately when I reboot the permissions are still 0 crw------- 1 root root 10, 200 Oct 24 14:09 /dev/net/tun Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Or point me to some clear documentation about creating custom udev rules. Thanks

Recommended Configuration Control Software?

We have several dozen production Linux servers and I would like to have better control over what files are changed, by whom, when they were changed, etc. Because these are all production servers that are in use 24x7, we do not have the luxury of simply doing a clean build, taking md5sums of each file, and then doing fresh installations. I need a system that can take in-place snapshots of each server's configuration files, store them in some kind of database or text file, and notify me whenever something changes. I've used tripwire in the past - do you have any other recommendations for this type of project?

dumpe2fs and repquota not agreeing on block size

Hello: I am trying to set up user quotas on my /var partition to enforce limits on user's mailbox sizes. The machine is running CentOS 5. When I do this: /sbin/dumpe2fs /dev/md2 | grep 'Block size' Block size: 4096 That tells me the block size is 4k. But, if I do: repquota /var It is telling me that one of my users is currently using 10264 blocks. But, if I look at their mail file, it is 10493792 bytes, which means they should be using 2562 blocks or so. Also, if I do: df /var I get this Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/md2 39674140 20401792 17224468 55% /var Which tells me the blocks are 1K in size. The repquota result makes much more sense with a 1K block size. Any idea why dumpe2fs is giving a 4K block size? how to boot centos from install CD

Hi, I make a mistake so that crash the whole system which can not boot from hard dist. But I am sure if I can access that hard disk, I can fix it. Now, the problem I met is how to boot from other media such as CD and then mount the hard disk so as to fix the mistake. Could anybody give me some advices, thanks in advance. Ian

Hi all CentOS users, I looked /var/log/messages log file and i realize something in "messages" files like below; --- Oct 24 04:02:42 cube2 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdc, logical block 1545 --- "sdc" is my storage and i switched off storage at 6 PM. and when i checked messages log file,I saw faillog under /var/log directory like below: -rw------- 1 root root 137438953440 Oct 24 15:39 faillog its ~136 GB but my disk table size like below: /dev/md1 497G 19G 453G 4% / /dev/md3 157G 15G 134G 10% /backup /dev/md0 243M 21M 210M 9% /boot tmpfs 32G 0 32G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sdc 805G 25G 739G 4% /mnt/sdc Where is ~136 GB faillog file ? ls and rm: "argument list too long"

Since when is there a limit in how long directory listings CentOS can show (ls), or how large directories can be removed (rm). It is really annoying to say, for example rm -rf /var/amavis/tmp and get only "argument list too long" as feedback. Is there a way to go round this problem? Simple audio recording app?

I've just been looking for a simple audio recording app, as I vaguely remember having seen such a thing before, only I can't seem to find it anymore. rsync mirroring

Hello guys, we have a production server named prod-server we have a mirror server named storage-server . I want to mirror a downloadsite on production server to a mirror server , but i want to keep all files from production server on mirror server . More explicitly. If i will have a file named "myproduct.exe" on production server , which is allready mirrored on mirror server , and i will delete it on production server, i want to have an original file renamed to myproduct.exe_DATE_OF_DELETION and then new myproduct.exe normally mirrored as before. Basically - I want to backup all changes I am syncing using rsync -avz ......... Should i add --backup --suffix = $(date) and thats it? Thanks in advance! David

Hi, One of my rare regrets with CentOS 5 was that GIMP only came in version 2.2, but 2.4 offers many nifty new functions quite handy for everyday work. Help with a sun cobalt with sendmail and centos with postfix

Hi, I have a customer with a sun cobalt running Sendmail 8.10.2/8.10.2 and we are phasing out the sun cube due to some limitations. So we have installed a new centos 5.x server. the format of our current emails are username(a)domain.com and the new format will be name.lastname(a)domain.com. We have 1600 accounts. Both server are in the LAN. The MX record that the world sees, point to our current AV/AntiSpam appliance, then our AV appliance forwards to the mail server (its a trendmicro IMSS) The AV appliance lets me define rules that emails for username(a)domain.com should be sent to the mailserver with the cube, and it also let me define a rule for name.lastname(a)domain.com to be sent to the centos machine, so I have covered the "from internet" inbound email issue. going out to the internet, both servers can send emails perfectly. However, Since both servers will "answer" to the same domain, i need some guidance as to how to 1- If user hosted on the Sun sendmail Cube sends emails to name.lastname(a)domain.com, make the Cube forward/send the email to the Centos machine. 2- If user hosted in centos, sends email to username(a)domain.com, make the POSTFIX forward/send the email to the Cube machine. Due to internal regulations i must say that: 1- users cannot be moved all at once. 2- centos machine must use postfix - not sendmail. I can however, install sendmail on centos and make it listen in another port other than 25 if some solution arises that needs sendmail in both sides. Anyways, any guidance as to how to solve this mess is welcomed!!!! firefox is incredibly unstable

does anyone else have major probs with Firefox as installed on CentOS5? ever since the RPM for FF3 came out it has been crashing daily. Usually when I use Save As... or Browse... or anything else that brings up the Gnome file picker. After the crash I re-start then the file picker works for a while. Sometimes it just takes scrolling or click+drag an image or some other random action. BANG your'e dead. Very frustrating. Now today it is just crashing randomly, I am not even touching it. Maybe one of my plugins, I know. I guess I will run it with debugger/strace. but does anyone else see this? $ rpm -qa firefox firefox-3.0.2-3.el5.centos $ cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 5.2 (Final) $ rpm -qa kdebase kdebase-3.5.4-18.el5.centos
