On: Centos 5.2, with httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3 I tried to bring up a web server using an httpd.con that runs well on: Fedora 8, with httpd-2.2.8-1.fc8 as well as several earlier versions, going back to Fedora 4. On the Centos version, I cannot successfully: run a NameVirtualHost; execute a CGI. I can bring up a simple page if I avoid the above. Suggestions would be much appresiated. Thanks, Mike.

Question about Mirrors

I am trying to set up a local repo for my division. I tried to rsync 5.1 updates off the mirrors and recieved an error of no file or dir. After going to the mirror, I notice that all of the 5.1 filder is empty and there is a readme there that states..... This directory (and version of CentOS) is depreciated. For normal users, you should use /5/ and not /5.1/ in your path. Please see this FAQ concerning the CentOS release scheme: http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=34 If you know what you are doing, and absolutely want to remain at the 5.1 level, go to http://vault.centos.org/ for packages. So I just want to make sure that I'm understanding this correct. I should use the 5.1 original RPMS for my base OS and get my updates for 5.1 from the 5 folder???? Just sounds weird. Should I do the same for my 5.0 release? Thanks for you help. -- Bo Lynch

Good [L]AMP tutorial for CentOS 5.2 ?

Being slightly familiar with BSD, I'm trying to get my feet wet with Linux, and was wondering if anyone can suggest a good walkthrough of setting up a CentOS server with Apache, PHP, and MySQL... I realize there are step-by-step guides of the sort "copy-this-line- paste-into-terminal-and-hit-enter", but I'd like to understand what's going on when I issue a single wget command and numerous packages and libraries start downloading.... Specifically: 1. Is there a "right" way to install software on Linux in general, an CentOS in particular? For example, the Package Manager on CentOS 5.2 allows you to install certain software, but often not the latest version. So if I go download MySQL 5.0.67 from the web, how do I install it and make it play nice with the rest of the system? Ditto for PHP 5.2.6. And once installed (either by the Package Manager -- and by the way, why are the apps it lists so out of date?), what's the best way to update PHP and MySQL? Is it simply a matter of downloading the binaries again and overwriting the existing install? On Mac OS X, such downloads come as .pkg files that seem to take care of so many details without requiring a trip to the command line. 2. Where should software, such as PHP, MySQL, Apache2, be installed? / usr/bin ? 3. Is it a bad idea to install some software from the command-line via wget, some software from the graphical Package Manager, and some software from the the web? What I mean is, so far it seems like Linux manages the list of installed packages, and I just wonder if I'm screwing things up this way. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, just looking for some guidance. smartd and 3ware on centos5

Hi, I've CentOS5 box with 3ware RAID controller in it. I can't get the tw_cli command line tool to work, and smartd also barks on me. The tw_cli simply doesn't see the controller, no errors logged anywhere. When starting smartd, it is much more verbose. Minicom capture file

I'm trying to capture text data coming in on serial port to put into a plot on a web page. Running minicom 2.3 on a Fedora 9 box the capture file is updated immediately. Running minicom 2.1, stock on a Centos 5.x box the capture file doesn't update until you exit capture mode. Is there any way to have it update immediately or is there an alternative application to write incoming data to a text file. Likely many ways to accomplish this but my brain is out of ideas today. Unable to use SSH password-less logins

I am trying to ssh from my Windows/Cygwin xterm window into my CentOS52 servers w/o using passwords but my keys seem like they're being ignored. I created the key in cygwin using: $ ssh-keygen -t dsa -f id_dsa And copied id_dsa.pub over to centos:~/.ssh/authorized_keys Ideas? tia, - Joe

Upstream bugzilla says :- Rebasing to Samba 3.0.32 would fix various current RHEL4 bugs. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=460904 I have looked at the bugs.centos.org but did not find user reported bugs. Is anyone experiencing problems using the CentOS 4 samba? Spike.

Atheros AR5212/AR5213 wifi not working

Hello everyone, I'm new to the CentOS list, so forgive me if this has been answered before (someone please point me to an efficient way of searching through the list archives). I have a wifi card from the subject line, and have the driver installed. Using NetworkManager under Gnome everything works perfectly. However, I prefer to use network service instead of NetworkManager since a) I use KDE and NetworkManager fails to work properly there b) this is a desktop machine, online 24/7 and I want wireless active even when I am not logged in. But when I use the network service, wifi0 fails after a delay, and /var/log/messages says there are no dhcp offers available. However, I am sure that there are several wireless networks available, with a strong signal. How to solve this? I would even accept using NM if it works as a daemon, ie even if I'm not logged in, and under KDE (which it doesn't atm). I believe the problem is essentially in the (in)ability to choose the appropriate network automatically --- in KDE NM doesn't have the taskbar applet which would let me choose the network, and the network service has no way of automatically making such a choice either... Please help! Btw, this is somewhat urgent, I am supposed to make it work by monday, Oct. 13. Oh, I almost forgot, CentOS 5.2, fully updated. Best, :-) Marko

Since I put my new Centos box on the net, it frequently tr1es to make ftp contact with IP address 64.90.181.77 . Why is this, and does anyone recognize this IP address? Is it spyware? Mike.

Hello, I'm top-posting my own thread with some homework I've done, can somebody help? In short, the problem is that kernel 2.6.18-53 (as per 5.1 installation) works OK while any kernel update makes booting impossible in Enhanced SATA mode. For newer kernels, only Compatible mode works, but at a very heavy cost in performance. The motherboard is ASUS P5GC-MX and the disk is ATA WDC WD3200AAJS-6. More detail in my own former message at the end. 1. I have tried pci=nommconf, noacpi, acpi=off. Any other hints? 2. I've opened up both initrd files (initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img, which works in "SATA/enhanced" mode, and the newer initrd-2.6.18-92.1.13.el5.img, which only works in "compatible") and found practically no differences (USB modules are loaded in a different order and that's about it). 3. In the hope that I could build up a working kernel (albeit sacrificing ease of update) I tried to figure out some useful config. I've scanned both config-XXX files but I am unable to identify any reasonable suspects either, diff provided below. Should SCSI-SAS-ATA be different? 4. Just to play a while, attempted to make mrproper and got the following. Same for make clean. However, the disk shows up as /dev/hdc and performance is noticeably slow. If I choose any other mode, nash complains that any LVM groups can't be found and panics away. I/O in general is terrible. Copying a CDROM to a file with dd renders the machine nearly unusable. The kernel provided in 5.1 can work in the BIOS IDE Setup "enhanced/SATA" and performance is really good. Hdparm when under the current kernel says 3.51 MB/s buffered speed, whereas for the older kernel it claims some 111+ MB/s. I have updated the BIOS ROM to no avail. What am I missing? Is there anything I can do except keep trying kernel updates? Hi Biz_User needs to switch to Sales_User, and I tried following in sudoers: Biz_User ALL=(Sales_User) ALL but I get following error when I run sudo su - Sales_User "Sorry, user Biz_User is not allowed to execute '/usr/bin/su - Sales_User' as root on Server_Name" I know that if I add root in allowed users list, I can switch to other user , but in that way user can switch to root as well. %Biz_Users ALL=(Sales_User,root) ALL any better idea ?

Xboard rpm for CentOS 4

Has anyone built an rpm for xboard for CentOS 4? I looked in the EPEL repo, KBS repo and rpmforge but none exist. The KBS repo has gnuchess in testing but what good is gnuchess without xboard? As usual the fedora SRPM for Fedora 6 and Fedora 9 cannot build on CentOS 4- they might build on CentOS 6 but i have no time machine :).

Installing a new VM on a xen box.

HW = HPQ DC7700 DuoCore 1.8GHz, 4 x 2GB RAM, 1 x 1TB SATA (AHCI) OS = CentOS-5.2 ix_64 (xen) I am experimenting with Xen and with virtual machines in general for the first time. In consequence I have many questions. However, the one that I wish answered at the moment is simple: Given a DVD containing the CentOS-5.2_Final (i386) distribution mounted at /media/CentOS_5.2_Final on Dom0, what argument do I pass to the "Install Media URL" argument of the "Create a new virtual system" wizard" to install the 32 bit version of CentOS-5.2 onto a vm called test-1? I have tried things like: /media/CentOS_5.2_Final /media/CentOS_5.2_Final/images /media/CentOS_5.2_Final/images/diskboot.img etc. All attempts produce the same negative result. What URL is used to load the 32 bit OS from the dvd? I am a digest subscriber so the favour of a direct copy of any reply to the list is appreciated. Video driver questions

My OQO has a VIA chipset. From the hwconf: class: VIDEO bus: PCI detached: 0 desc: "VIA Technologies, Inc. CX700M2 UniChrome PRO II Graphics" vendorId: 1106 deviceId: 3157 subVendorId: 1106 subDeviceId: 3157 pciType: 1 pcidom: 0 pcibus: 1 pcidev: 0 pcifn: 0 When I install Centos, I default to the vesa driver, and it operates at the monitor's native 800x480. Of course I want more and to physically scroll the screen to see all of the content (the OQO has slide bars on it that do cause the current active window to scroll). When I change the monitor settings to Generic LCD 1024x768, I get that and 800x600 as an option. If I change the screen resolution to either 800x600 or 1024x768, and log out of X and log back in, my resolution is unchanged at 800x480. So I tried using the VIA driver that comes with Centos. It does not list the CX700, but, you know, give it a try. At first I get errors from X when logging in, finally I get changes to occur, but I am still at 800x480. Selecting 800x600 or 1024x768 mkaes no difference. Below is my /etc/X11/xorg.conf. More Samba Questions

I have never setup a Samba server, and the recent thread here prompted to get on this I need to migrate two XP machines from using iSCSI to Samba. I thought the "+" preceding a username in the smb.conf file for a share definition told Samba to use the unix username? Unless I actually use swat to create and enable the user and take off the + it doesn't work. Any ideas what swat does when you create a user through that interface? Is there any way to simply force Samba to use locally created users in the share definition? Thanks! jlc

Firefox3 for CentOS4 -- dependency on evolution28 packages?

I'd been putting off installing the FX3 packages because of some extensions I use that don't have upgrades. [*] However, when FX1.5 crashed on me today I decided to finally go ahead. Fired up yum and I'm told I have to install a slew of evolution28 library packages in order to install the firefox package. Why? I removed evolution from my system for a reason, and I'd just as soon it stays gone. [*] Additional off-topic rant: Why was the API access to form history removed from Firefox? Why must I throw away my entire history to get rid of a few typographical errors to reduce the number of bogus field completion choices I'm offered?

Thunderbird does not follow url links in Firefox

Since the recent update from firefox2 to firefox3 the links in my mails do no longer work. No window pops up. After some debug I found the problem. Let's share it with others that experience the same problem: I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 (manually downloaded, that might have caused the problem, I have not tried with 1.5) I'm using Firefox 3.0.2 (yum installed CentOS 4.7) To solve I created a small wrapper script that unsets LD_LIBRARY_PATH: cat <path>/firefox_wrap #!/bin/bash unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH firefox $@ To start add : user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http", "<path>/firefox_wrap"); to ~/.thunderbird/<salt>/prefs.js (or use the advanced config editor) The error message (for those Googling around): /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.2/firefox-bin: /opt/thunderbird-2.0.0.17/libnss3.so: version `NSS_3.12' not found (requiredby /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.2/libxul.so) Cheers, Theo

I am looking for something similar to the windows SEARCH FILES comman with the option "files containing ..." (that is where I can specify a string and it will find all files containing that string -- not just having the string as part of the name but actually containing it in the text). Is there some way to do this?

Samba 3.0.28/3.0.32

I've looked at the CentOS docs-list as well as the Wiki as I was interested in Samba. On one CentOS box I've got 3.0.32 (the latest bug-fixed version from Samba.org) and on another I've got 3.0.28 (the latest from upstream). The docs look almost the same and the docs refer to security = share. However 3.0.32 comes with a blank smb.conf making it harder to get a secure server up and running. Is there a plan for a quick and dirty guide on the Wiki for setting up Samba with secure settings as well as TDB rather than deprecated settings? In tips and tricks there is http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/WindowsShares Without writing a book as someone suggested, a few one-liners could be put together in the wiki. Spike

rpmforge has just released a new perl-DBD-mysql for el4 that has an obsoletes against perl-DBD-MySQL and the protectbase yum plugin doesn't grok obsoletes. the priorities plugin does. so if you are having issues with this, install the yum-plugin-priorities first, make sure that the CentOS-Base repo is priority 1 and the rpmforge repo is priority 2 or higher (99 is the default). also, i'd like to suggest that the priorities plugin be made added to the base install and that the centos-base repos be configured with priority 1. it looks like c4 has the priority setting, but c5 doesn't and neither have the plugin installed. it seems like this would create a little more stable setup for people when they start adding other repos.

The apache httpd.conf has AddDefaultCharset UTF-8 while the page I'm viewing on my CentOS server is charset=ISO-8859-1 The page appears funny on the browser showing �� Given that apache has the default charset shouldn't it honor it? Why the �� characters? Spike.

Another question about find. I looked at the gnome tool and tried to simulate what it is doing. I can't use it directly because it won't do sed. Basically I want to find all files with a string (except binary) and change it. let STR be the string I am looking for. NEW is new string. I am doing TFIL=/usr/tmp/dummy$$.txt find . -type f | while read fil do grep "$STR" $fil > $TFIL [ $? -eq 0 ] || continue ## does not match if [ "$(cat $TFIL)" = "Binary file $fil matches" ] then continue # Don't operate on binary files fi sed -i "s/$STR/$NEW/g" $fil done (I will have to do something with sed in case there is "/" in the string) Problem is, the grep redefines my stdin so it no longer comes from the list of files that "find" found, and it then terminates after finding the first file. Anyway to "push" stdin on the stack or something before the grep, and "pop" it again afterwards, so it goes back to the list of files found?

Request for additional patch in CentOS Plus kernel

Hi, I have an Adaptec eSATA card, model 1225SA: http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/Controllers/Hardware/sata/entry/AAR-1… Although the chipset is sata_sil24, it is not recognized by default by the kernel because its PCI ID is different than the ones recognized by this driver on the CentOS kernel. The driver recognizes PCI IDs such as 0x3132, 0x0242, 0x3131, but not 0x0244, which is the one this card has. I found out that it works with the latest kernel, and that the patch to make it work only adds the 0x0244 PCI ID to the list of IDs recognized by the sata_sil24 driver. Here is the patch: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdi… Following the instructions on the Wiki, I built a custom kernel based on the CentOS Plus kernel, but adding this patch. The adapter worked as expected with that kernel. So I ask: Would it be possible to incorporate this patch to the default set of patches applied on the CentOS Plus kernel? Hello Akemi & Others, Today I reformated my laptop Dell Precision M90 and installed the Fresh version of CentOs 5.2 and then took all the available update. In that update I got Kernel version update and now I am on Kernel-2.6.18-92.1.10.el5.centos.plus. I kept a file iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode into the /lib/firmware/ Now after restarting the computer my computer it is giving the following message on the startup. Bringing up interface wmaster : Determining IP information for wmaster .... SIOCSIFLAGS : Operation not supported. In the network manager it is showing my device i.e Intel Pro 3945 adapter but in the Inactive state. Please give me some suggestion so that I can figure out this problem. Slightly OT: Dell Poweredge 2850 with 4GB RAM

Hi all, I got the previously mentioned Dell Poweredge 2850 with 4GB RAM and Perc4e raid controller. Installation went well and the raid is pretty fast even with level 5. However I have another problem now... CentOS 5.2 only sees 256MB RAM. Googling a bit, got me to install kernel-PAE, this went well, but CentOS still sees only 256MB. Googling some more, I found a bios update was suggested and might do the trick. Checking what bios version the server had, revealed it was A02. Upon checking the Dell support site I saw they had a version A07, which I downloaded. The file was in bin format and executable via the CLI. Installation of the A07-version went well too with no errors, and it told me to reboot the machine to activate/start the update. Upon reboot, at post, it said the update failed. Now what?? I'm at a loss here. This is my first Dell Poweredge-server and I lack knowledge in the tricks-department with this one. What do I do now? Knowing the Dell-support, I turn to this list in hope of some useful hints in this matter. problem talking to server postgrey/socket: Permission denied

Hi folks, I have installed postgrey from the rpmforge repo, but it does not work well with postfix from CentOS 5.2: I always get the error: warning: connect to postgrey/socket: Permission denied problem talking to server postgrey/socket: Permission denied But the permissions on the socket seem okay (postfix could write to it): srw-rw-rw- 1 postgrey postgrey 0 4. Okt 14:48 socket I also tried "restorecon -R /var/spool/postfix/postgrey", but that did not change anything, either. Googling does not show anything recent and helpful. Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

Hi ALL I'm using vsftpd as FTP server, and I'd like to chroot my FTP users to their home dir. Eclipse 3.2.1-19 package on Centos 5.2

Hi, I'm using Centos 5.2 and trying to use Eclipse's embedded browser without success. Could this be due to any of the patches that were commented out in 3.2.1-18? When trying to use the embedded browser, I get the error: No more handles (java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no swt-mozilla-gtk-3235 in java.library.path). I have a gre.conf, have set MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME, and LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but continue to get that error. If you have any ideas, I'd be very grateful. Thanks -Tom

I am contemplating converting some of our internal networks from routable to private IPv4 address space. I have a question about RIP as implemented under Cisco IOS 12.x. Presently the setting for rip is: router rip version 2 passive-interface [[FastEthernet]]0/0 network aaa.bbb.ccc.0 no auto-summary What I would like to know is how one routes the entire 192.168/16 address space using rip. My perusal of the various Cisco manuals, technical documents and various O'Rielly books is not giving me any clear answer and I am rather reluctant to experiment on our live Internet connection. Dear All, apprecite ur kind help n advice I have a Centos 5 server running only squid for sometime and its workin great. i am concerned about security so i have a shorewall firewall on the machine runnign squid n works grt now i would like to know the follwing 1) does anyone one know of any good antivirus software i could install on the centos OS squid server so as to scan for viruses so i cd periodically scan the server thnks and apprecite regards fabian -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

ejabberd 2.0.2 vs SELinux vs CentOS 5

Lordy, I've been having problems with this darn thing, so I hope someone can help me. :s My troubles started when I downloaded the latest erlang and ejabberd packages. I crashed and burned very quickly, trying two or three different versions of erlang along with several of ejabberd 2.0.x. Finally, after a week of pain, I admitted defeat, wiped the whole lot and installed the binary on the process-one website. Initially, the binary worked well, but mysteriously stopped working whenever I changed the config file and restarted the file. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have discovered that SELinux is preventing erlang from accessing its crypto libs. This message appears in the SELinux audit logs: type=AVC msg=audit(1223133076.770:102): avc: denied { execmod } for pid=3878 comm="beam.smp" path="/opt/ejabberd-2.0.2_2/lib/crypto-1.5.2/priv/linux-x86/lib/crypto_drv.so" dev=dm-0 ino=26738869 scontext=user_u:system_r:unconfined_t:s0 tcontext=user_u:object_r:usr_t:s0 tclass=file What do I need to do, for selinux to allow this? (Or should I take this question to an SELinux list?) FWIW, ejabberd seems to run fine while selinux is enabled. Its just when starting up, that it needs selinux to stay out of the way.

A while ago I sent mail about wanting to find all files that had a certain text string in it and changing it to something else. People mentioned that there is a system tool to do it (gnome has it too). I ran this, for example to find all files WITH "prog" in the name, and then I did a ps and I saw simply find . -iname '*prog*' then I did something similar, all file names but with "prog" in it, and found basically two lines (one was child process of the other, so I assume it was a pipe or something): find . -type f grep -i -c prog this does a grep for case insensitivity for "prog", so basically the tool uses find and grep. I could do something like find . -type f | while read fil do sed -i 's/prog/name/g' $f # change "prog" to "name" done A couple problems here. If what I am changing is the same length then it may be ok. But consider this quick (example) C program state.c int main( int argc, char **argv ) { printf( "Ohio\n" ); } if I compile it to "state" and then print it prints Ohio. If I do (on the compiled file state) sed -i 's/Ohio/Utah/' state then it will print Utah. However, if I change the length sed -i 's/Ohio/Michigan/' state it will of course SIGSEGV because it changed some of the object code. (Actually even doing the same length can be dangerous). What I want to do is either provide another option to the find (which I can'e seem to find), or pipe the files it finds to something like "file" to get only ASCII files (non-object code). However, I am not sure how to do this. On most files, the "file" command will return something with "text" in it, but not all files. For instance, sometimes it returns "application" or "shell script" but it is still OK to do the sed on these. Is there some easy way to take a file name and determine whether sed -i can safely be done on it (i.e., it is ASCII and not some sort of binary file)? Tony

Boot disk order: h/w vs. grub

I'm still having conceptual trouble with this one. I have two PATA and two SATA disks in my home system. When the system comes up, these are, espectively, /dev/hda, /dev/hdb, /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. I have the boot order of the drives in the boot PROM set to boot from /dev/sda (hard drive 2), then /dev/hda (hd 0), and usually that works fine. /dev/sda is properly set up with the MBR and /boot lives there as well. However, when the system has to be shut down, usually for some length of time more than just a few seconds, when it comes back up, it can't find the boot image. I forgot how I got around this the first time. The second time, when it wasn't booting past the "GRUB" part of the grub announcement, I used the installation disk, booted into linux resuce mode, chroot'd to the actual system disk and re-did grub-install. Still, a few days later (last Tuesday) when my video card went south, I just edited the grub boot line to use root(hd2, 0) and it came up, followed by several reboots with unmodified grub config lines. I guess I'm wondering if there's some more permanent way around this issue. Do I need to overwrite the MBR on hd0? Should I reconfigure the system so the PATA drives are not connected to the m/b at all (i.e., usb enclosures)? Is this a bug in grub? All this is assuming that I do not get rid of the PATA drives and/or get a new m/b that has <something else>.... It seems strange that this should be such a pain, even though in a rather oddball way it makes sense. Thoughts? Thanks mhr

mysqld breaks yum, help?

Greetings. After doing: $ yum install mysql-server $ /etc/init.d/mysqld start Yum is broken. One distro had a "brainflash" a number of years ago - create a list for expert users and one for newbies. It didn't take long for the newbies to realise that there was no one to help and so flooded the "expert list". This put off the "experts". On some mailing lists, long time users are put off by the flood of posts by newbies who don't even conform to the list guidelines. I got an email of the classic 419 scam from a "El Amir Assadallah" <rdjir001(a)eircom.net>. This has just come if from the abuse department :- Dear Vandaman, Thank you for your recent email to Technical Support. We have contacted our customer and hope to have this issue resolved within 72 hours. If you receive any further mails of this nature after the 72 hour time period has elapsed, please forward the headers. Kind Regards, eircom net Residential Technical Support. Nightly yum update did an "upgrade"

Hy there, i have a centos (4.?) Box with nightly yum update enabled. Last night, it did an upgrade to 4.7 leading to several problem i.e. not respawning the dhcrelay, which is needed on this box. Can I control the update policy not to upgrade to new releases in the nightly updates? I would like do to nightly updates, but make release upgrades manual (I get a new kernel, so I have to reboot anyway). Is that possible? Hi -- I forgot to remove an LVM snapshot after making a backup. Now neither the snapshot nor the original volume are available. How do I recover and get the original volume back online? Yumex-Error in loading repository data

On a CentOS 4 desktop Yumex gives the error message "Error in loading repository data" but yum works fine from the cli. Could something have been broken in yumex? Putting yumex in debug mode does not give me clues as to the error message. Thanks, Josh

JFS in CentOS

Hello all, I'm relatively new to CentOS, but I've been using linux as my main operating system on both the desktop and server ends for the past 4 years. I currently have a PIII server with two 160GB IDE hard drives in it, in a virtual RAID 1 array. At the time of installation, the only FS choices for the largest partition, 120GB, were ext2 and ext3. I chose ext3, but now am wishing to reformat the partition as JFS to skip long file system check times. I've done Google searches regarding the topic, which lead me to added centos.plus to my repo list, and installed the only kernel I see as being available from CentOSPlus, and yet I still have no JFS modules loaded or anywhere in /lib/modules/. I installed JFSUtils from the CentOSPlus repo, but have no way to use the partition that has been created (by myself, using mkfs.jfs). Short of compiling a kernel with JFS support from the source package provided with CentOS, I don't know what to do. Has anyone else used JFS on CentOS 5.2 successfully? How did you do it? I have created an iso but during installation, only CentOS5.2 rpms get installed & scopserv rpms doesn't install. Is genhdlist command is required? ssh error in /var/log/secure

Hi - I just bought a xen VPS and am running CentOS 5 on it (updated to 5.2). With all my personal machines sitting at home behind a router with all ports (except for BitTorrent) closed - I had forgotten how frequent brute force ssh attacks are, but within a day, the log was loaded with them. So I did two things - I installed and configured pam_abl and I moved the ssh port to 1294 ( a > 1024 number that means something to me so easy to remember) and then blocked port 22 in iptables. Interestingly - after installing pam_able before I configured and restarted sshd, pam_able was already building a database of hosts - the attacks were that frequent. Nothing after restarting sshd on the new port though, at least so far. Anyway - while the server is working on the new port and I can connect, I noticed this error: Oct 4 09:01:25 li34-4 sshd[2305]: Server listening on :: port 1294. Oct 4 09:01:25 li34-4 sshd[2305]: error: Bind to port 1294 on 0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use. Is that caused by a mis-configuration on my part? The only change I made to sshd was the Port directive (root login was already disabled in the xen image I started from) It looks like it is listening on the port and then trying to bind to the port a second time. Is that from having two IPs on the same nic (eth0 and eth0:1) ?

Has anyone tried to install a CentOS 5.x kernel on a CentOS 4.x system? Is this doable? I"m aware of the dependencies but I'm curious if anyone has done this successfully. Basically, we have a few hundred 4.x systems that cannot be upgraded to 5.x, yet, but we do need the kernel update to fix the XFS problem as described here: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=3125

VNC & GDM & runlevel 3

Has anybody been able to get this to work ? I have been trying multiple options until now but all give me the empty crappy desktop with black cross display... I have tried changing the server_args in the xinetd config, but that makes a connection and exits straigt away... On 1 box it works in runlevel 5, but that is obvious (IMHO)... I am attempting to install CentOS-5.0 from CD-ROM onto an HPQ- DC7700 Dual Core machine. The standard install seems to halt at, or immediately after, this point in the setup process is displayed on the console: <Enter> {default install option} ... CPU1: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 CPU 4300 @ 1.8GHz stepping 02 ... ACPI: Assume root bridge [\_sb_.pc10] bus is 0. I would like to get this box running so any help with this is greatly appreciated. The reason for using CentOS-5.0 is because I do not which to wait 30 some odd hours to download new ISO images. The plan is to install from 5.0 and upgrade to 5.2. last point. iSCSI ini and ESX Server

I always used IET on CentOS but I have a quick server to setup to backup some VM's, then migrate to DAS on another server and the easiest way for me will be to accomplish this via iSCSI vmfs stores. I figured I would just use the ini that ships with CentOS but have never used it against ESX, anyone do this and have experiences they care to share? Should it be trivial or are there any non standard configs that need to be used? Thanks! jlc

Hi! I've got a CentOS4.7-machine as a fileserver. The machine also serves as the LDAP-server against which all regular users are authenticated. The problem I am having is that the machine takes a very long time to boot. Most of the services start up rather quick, but three services take quite a long time (extending the boot time to over half an hour, which is .... long) The three services are (in that order): - NFS statd - LDAP - NFS quota As soon as the LDAP-Service (and sshd) has started I can remotly log into the machine: the rpc.quotad has started but takes no CPU-time (so I guess he must be waiting for something) Some other observations I had: - a restart of LDAP takes several minutes - if the LDAP-service is down a "su ldap" (ldap IS in /etc/passwd) seems to hang. The ldap-service-script does such a su to check the configuration so I guess that is what takes the service so long) Could anyone give me a hint what the problem could be and how to fix it? Is any more information required (don't want to spam you with the nsswitch.conf and the whole pam.d-stuff)? Bernhard

Maltby I have looked everywhere on the drive using programs such as 'find'. I have ran: $ find / -iname "*.jpg" -or "*.JPG" and the missing files are now listed. I know enough to be able to find files. This is whats got me because I've never know an ext3 fs to do this; unless it's a bug with fuse-encfs.

Keeping a complete CentOS mirror

Is there a way I can keep a complete mirror of old/new releases of CentOS 4/5 automagically? In other words I would pull the old files from the vault site when needed, and new files from one of the other mirrors. I've seen/used a few scripts but rsync just stomps the old releases with the latest. The key issue here is having new release detection happen programmatically so I don't need to manage it once it's setup. Before I reinvent the wheel, I just wanted to see if there was a known method of accomplishing this. Q. Why? A. Because I have customers that need access to older OS builds as their products do not move as quickly as CentOS. Thanks in advance. Chris

Flaky graphics - need help nailing down the cause

This morning I noticed that my (new in July) monitor was behaving strangely. At first, it was odd parts of web page graphics that didn't show up unless I scrolled up and down in the window, and then they weren't displayed with any consistency. Then I noticed that the screensaver failed to appear (computer was locked, but graphics never showed on the monitor). I tried running mplayer to play a movie I have on the system, and the window remained black (sound was fine). When I move a window, parts of it (pixels scattered across the window) don't refresh during the move OR even when it is done, unless I run the mouse over them or, in the case of the menu bar, click on one of the options. The nautilus window that sometimes comes up after a reboot was not fully painted with the text parts of the entries below the mouse cursor on the screen until I ran the mouse over them, and then only the ones I "touched" refreshed properly. During the system shutdown and restart, the text is scrambled beyond recognition, although the graphics during the boot, driver init and login screen are fine. Most of the screen after I log in shows up, unless the default terminal and nautilus windows show up, and then they're not all there (as above). DVI-VGA: same problem either way 2.6.18-92.1.10 - 92.1.13: likewise (makes no difference) The video card is an nvidia ge7100gs and I have the beta driver from rpmforge (under dkms). The base system is an ECS nFORCE4M-A with an AMD Athlon 64x2 and 4GB of OCZ main memory. The newest parts are the main memory (upgraded from 2GB about two months ago) and the monitor (new in July). The m/b, COU and graphics card are all about 18 months old. I recently upgraded to the new 92.1.13 kernel. Question: Is this the monitor (most likely), the video card, the OS or the base system, or something else I have not considered? Is there a good video test program I can use to diagnose this properly? I have a two-year replacement warranty on the monitor, so I will use it if I need to, and I think it's still under the manufacturer's warranty anyway. Thanks. mhr

XDMCP - no GDM login, only gray screen with X

I'm having trouble getting the GDM login screen to show up when I connect from a remote host. I'm using Xming on the local Windows machine, but every time I connect to the remote server all I get is a gray window with the X cursor. I have "Enable=true" in the [xdmcp] section of /etc/gdm/custom.conf. IPtables is disabled. I've googled around and read through the xdmcp page on tldp.org but have not come up with anything. Can anyone help with this issue?

Firefox distorted printing

Hi, I am running a fully updated CentOS 4 box. Since the last few rounds of updates - upgrading to the latest Firefox, I find that I can not print Bank statements etc ( .ps files when saved to disk). The Bank's logo and any lines on the form print OK but the actual content is distorted beyond recognition - printing a series of special characters (!"$%&#'(") instead of transaction descriptions or amounts. Has anyone else experienced this or have a suggestion on how to fix the problem. Other preformatted documents like supplier invoices are also not printed as well formatted as before (html documents) but appear all squashed up instead of filling the page vertically. TIA ChrisG

Hi, I'm running a crontjob on CentOS 5.2 server, which then connects to a webpage to run some stuff. It has to run this way, since the webpage is on a Windows server, and the Windows scheduled tasks doesn't work as well. setting timezone from kickstart

Hi all, I used to do manual installs so I would set the timezone each time. I have now migrated to kickstart and I wish to use a command line (at boot) parameter to set the needed timezone. I am familiar with timeconfig and that works. I tried timeconfig --help (looking for command line arguments) and there appears to not be a command line way that I see to set the timezone. I have seen mention of changing symbolic links and stuff - but I was hoping for a system command to change the timezone. Like "timeconfig --zone Denver" or "timeconfig --zone Mountain" something like that. Is there something like that or do I have to use the symbolic links? Thanks, Jerry

I have a CIDR block of IP addresses that I need to pass through to a WAN. I am trying to have a CentOS 5.2 basic install with 2 NICs be the router/gateway between the WAN and the public IP CIDR block. Has anyone done this? Other than turning on IP forwarding what did you have to do?

It seems the certificate-based login doesn't work on both sides of the remote connection when using scp? Scenario: User on PC A can SSH login to PCs B and C with his certificate, no password prompt. When User on PC A runs a scp operation from B to C he's asked for the password on C. Does the scp actually open a connection from B to C (User doesn't have a certificate on B)? This would explain the problem. I hoped to avoid such a problem by scping from a third machine that normally has certificate-based access to all machines.
