Okay, Yahoo is bumming me. Only system my mail is having an issue with. All mail is accepted, but junked. I can only think it is the DKIM/Domain keys. It is apparent that the dkim-milter is not part of the centos 5.x distro nor is it part of the mirrors, as far as I can tell. So...have any of you done it with your servers for sendmail? There are some sites that claim to have rpms and I have downloaded the tar from sendmail. But I would rather hear from anyone who has an opinion before I go with one or the other. I do not trust any rpms except for their mirrors, so not sure if I want to do that. But maybe it is fine. Open to suggestions, ideas for what works for you and yahoo. OT - Monitoring tool

Hello everyone, While I know this isn't Centos related, you guys seems to be on top of your game around here. Sorry for the off-topic. I'm looking for a tool to monitor my servers and send either an email or page or both when something breaks. I would like it to monitor all sorts of services on the servers with one small detail, I'd like it to be able to confiugre so if the DBA need something monitor that is hosted on a shared system that they can only change what they are responsible for and not something else that is being monitored on that system. Configure an ATI Radeon X1200 card?

Hi, I want to configure X on a NEC PC with an ATI graphic card. Usually, I do that by hand, e. g.: # init 3 # X -configure --> first draft # mv xorg.conf.new /etc/X11 Then I edit this with Vi, step by step. Usually, this works, but not for ATI cards. Here, the first draft only gives me a "vesa" driver... though xorg-x11-drv-ati is installed. But then, when I replace Driver "vesa" by: Driver "ati" I get a "No screens found" error. Until now, I've successfully configured dozens of different video cards, mostly Intel and NVidia (old and new), and also a few ATI cards (with the opensource driver). But this is the first ATI card that gives me trouble. Any suggestions? Niki

Questions on custom LiveCD

I tried making my own LiveCD according to the instructions on the project site. First, applause, the basic procedure works like a charm. It's really easy to do and works right from the beginning (I'm building it inside a VM). I tried the minimal and the desktop version (with a few changes). I have encountered a few problems and have some questions. The German keyboard I set in the kickstart file was setup correctly for text mode, but not for graphical mode. I can change it from within the account, so everything that needs to be there seems to be there. Do others have the same problem? The graphical mode just displays a blank screen on my laptop (contains some S3 UniChrome chip). Is this an expected problem? It's not a big problem that the X server doesn't run on that laptop, but I wonder if it's possible to use a more generic driver that would at least display in lower resolution or so? (as I don't know if the machine where the CD might get used also has an unsupported chipset.) The goal is to create a CD that provides a browser and a LAMP web application, so that a few people that don't have access to the net in their office can use/test a database project. So, going on, I would like to add the code and database to the CD, so that the user can open Firefox and use the application from the local webserver. I see that the structure of the CD is an ext3fs.img with the root filesystem in a squashfs.img in the iso file. If I change the content of the ext3fs.img can I put it back on the rw mounted squashfs.img and that in the iso? If yes, I assume I would need to cater for a necessary resize of the images. I am going into: /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-92.1.10.el5-x86_64 and doing a "make mrproper" attempting to rebuild the Modules.symvers file. As I added ALSA 1.0.17 to the current kernel. install Verisign/NetSol CA bundle

I have a client-provided SSL cert that seems to be provided by Verisign but issued by my good friends at Network Problems. I thought this was part of default cert.pem, but maybe not. The docs on Verisign's site are... ahem... unhelpful. I have what I think is the correct CA chain for this cert, but still trying to determine what marketing terms overlap with what reality. Probably a bad set-up but which one?

I am having a problem that I assume is a set-up problem but I don't know which area to look at to fix it. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction. I can't get the simple Perl "Hello World" script to work. Oh, it does print "Hello World" OK but it also prints the "Content" line as text rather than using it as a directive. Two different servers (both CentOs 5) and both IE and Firefox are doing the same thing. I first tried a JavaScript program (free online shopping cart) and it wouldn't work properly. So, I changed to CGI and can't get it working OK either. What does work: CGI/Perl visitor count program. Count.log and main.log exist and get updated and display the updated count in the browser OK. What doesn't work: "content" line is seen as text. I can't create a file using CGI. I can append to one but I can't create one. I have tried a CGI shopping cart (Commerce) which has an install script. It displays the first page OK but when I click on "Continue" I get the same page again. The script says clicking on "Continue" should submit a form (Post) with a name of "step2. An IF statement should see that name and go to the step2 subroutine. It doesn't. It falls through to the ELSE and displays the same page. A Print command shows the name is blank after the click. The browser knows about the form because a refresh tells me about the stale form data. I have the AddHandler lines and the ExCGI option in my http config. I have checked that all spelling and cases are OK. Carp Fatal to Browser is not showing any errors. Server error log doesn't seem unhappy either. I have done some searching in news groups and Deja, ooops sorry, Google and didn't find anything that helped. Where do I look next?

Zone transfers not working for subdomain

I have a domain, let's call it "example.com". I am able to do zone transfers on the local host as follows: dig example.com AXFR @localhost This command outputs all of the contents of the zone as expected. scp partition "not a regular file"

Hi list, should it be possible to scp a partition with this command: scp /dev/sda7 backupserver:/backup/sda7.img I always get "not a regular file" - which is a clear and understandable error, but my googling tells me that some people are doing this - and it seems to work - at least at their systems. I know that I can avoid this by simply doing dd if=/dev/sda7 | ssh backupserver dd of=/backup/sda7.img So its not a big deal - just curious. System here is a fully updated CentOS 5.2 x86_64 if that matters any thoughts? Henry

Problem in Wireless Card Setup in Dell Precision M90

Hello Friends, This is my first post on CentOS mailing list. I am using CentOS since last 3 years and using Linux since 2003. I am Java Based ERP(http://ofbiz.apache.org/) developer and I truly appreciate the stability of CentOS as the Desktop machine for the developers. In the early 2003 I was using CentOS 4 then I moved to CentOS 5 stable release then before 1.5 month I installed CentOS 5.2 (Took all the available updates for 5.2 version). I am using Dell Precision M90 Laptop. My Wireless card details is "Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG". On the CentOS 5.2 I am not able to configure the wireless card on CentOS 5.2 although my wireless card was working fine with CentOS 5.1. I have installed the package dkms-ipw3945.noarch and it has installed all the dependent package for wireless card to work properly. When I put command modprobe ipw3945 then it didn't give any error. My LED is glowing properly. >From the Network Manager I have added my Wireless card into the list of Network Devices and from there I activated my device. But when I try to Join the Wireless Network then it "Deactivate" the status of my wireless device. I have spent more then 10 hours on this and now I am looking to have some community help on my problem. Any help or pointer on this would be greatly appreciated . If anybodsy of you can share the step by step learning document on Wireless Setup on Red Hat Derivatives then please let me know. Network installation from CD

Hi, In a corporate environment we are not allowed to use DHCP/PXE for doing network installations. This means we have to look for other solutions. Our solution is to use an ISO image (mounted via a KVM solution) to kick off the network installation. A big problem currently is that the order of the network interfaces is arbitrary (depends on the order of the drivers loaded) and is not influence by the order of the PCI slots. So in our case we have a bunch of e1000, bnx2 and tg3 in systems we have to install. The first onboard interface (usually tg3 or bnx2) almost never is eth0, but instead can be eth2, eth3 or higher. (Depending on the number of "other" NICs) This is problematic because Anaconda never gives a very good analysis of why the download of the kickstart fails. Very unpleasant if you want system deployements done by Service Operations. So our solution was to provide ksdevice=MAC-ADDRESS , which works fine in the first phase for downloading the kickstart file, but then the kickstart file again has a network-directive with a --device= parameter to configure the network again in the second phase. Here is where the trouble starts. The --device= cannot handle MAC addresses, in other words if we ommit the --device= parameter we get a list of interfaces, which we do not want because the list does not indicate which one is the right interface. Using ksdevice=bootif and providing BOOTIF=MAC-ADDRESS on the commandline does not help either because the second phase always wants to reconfigure the network. In fact we don't want the second phase to reconfigure the network, we want it to keep the working network configuration from the first phase which worked fine for downloading the kickstart file. So here's my question: Is there a way to have the second phase network configuration NOT take place, or have it use the interface that was correctly downloading the kickstart file ? I could not find it anywhere and none of my tests seem to indicate that this is at all possible. Rpmbuild and how to disable automatic dependency list creation.

Hello All, When I build RPM packages, rpmbuild always scans all the executables, shared libs, perl scripts, etc. to find out which external libraries the application depends on. This is normally a Good Thing but I am currently packaging an in-house, self contained application. I could almost use a tarball but an RPM provides better manageability and also allows post-installation tasks. All shared libraries are under a single prefix, which is not in the system-wide ld.so.conf - it is configured in the startup script of the application. However, rpmbuild finds all these dependencies and adds them to the list of "Requires", which is not desirable in this case. My question therefore is - how can I tell rpmbuild to stop automatically creating a dependency list? The best I can come up with at the moment is to add the following to my ~/.rpmmacros (line numbers added by me): [1] %__os_install_post /usr/lib/rpm/brp-strip-comment-note [2] %__find_requires /bin/true [3] %__perl_requires /bin/true So: [1] - Stop it stripping already stripped binaries. [2] and [3] - This stops it doing the automatic dependency list creation. This seems a bit heavy handed though, is there another, cleaner way to do it? Regards, Fred.

Moving folder just vanished??

Hi all, Can anyone explain or give an clues as to what just happened? I'm running CentOS 5.2 as a desktop with Gnome. Fully up to date, etc. I was dragging a folder of image (.jpg) files to another folder on the same filesystem (LVM ext3) with the mouse and as I dropped the folder into the new folder - poof! - it disappeared like a puff of smoke. I've searched everywhere for the files/and or folder and they are totally gone. I must also point out that the filesystem was an encrypted one using fuse-encfs. In all my years of using Linux, I've never seen this happen before. Sadly I have no backup as I'd just copied them from an SD card to the HDD then formated the card - maybe I was too quick doing that step. Thanks

Strange message at boot time

Hi, I'm usually booting all machines here with 'vga=788 quiet' options in menu.lst, so I see what services start, but it's not too verbose at the same time. One message that puzzles me is the very first one after GRUB starts init: "Memory for crash kernel (0x0 to 0x0) notwithin permissible range." Anyone knows what that means? Niki

HAL adds printer twice

Hi, When I want to configure a printer, say an HP Deskjet 940, I install hplip, configure cupsd.conf, open up http://localhost:631 and configure the printer in the CUPS interface. Now whenever I want to print, I see that the selfsame printer is added again, and CUPS mentions it as "added by HAL". Is there a way to stop this sort of behaviour? Cheers, Niki

Adding patch to Centos Kernel - early build failure

Hi Guys I'm trying to add the patch mentioned in this thread to the plain Centos kernel http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2008-August/062845.html I've followed the directions on the wiki for building a custom kernel, but after applying all the patches it fails with: make[1]: *** [nonint_oldconfig] Error 4 make: *** [nonint_oldconfig] Error 2 error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.74263 (%prep) RPM build errors: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.74263 (%prep) Can anyone help with this? Why i can't configure network and hostname with this kickstart file?

Hi, all. I use this kickstart file to install CentOS 5.2 (both i386 and x86_64), but i can't config NICs and hostname during installation, what's wrong with it? cpufreq and suspend

With my OQO, I get the following message when I try to suspend: cpufreq: suspend failed to assert current frequency is what timing core thinks it is. I see in /var/log/messages: kernel: acpi-cpufreq: CPU0 - ACPI performance management activated There are a number of apps and such dedicated to 'cpufreq' on the system. I have done a bit of searching and have not figured out what to do to address this so I can put the OQOs into suppend mode. Any pointers out there?

Request info on managing MySQL

Good day/night/whatever fellow techies, I've come to a small problem managing mysql on CentOS 4.7 box[1]. When I have done things on mysql on my desktop systems it was always just for personal use so I would be lazy and put everything under the "test" db so I didn't have to deal with all that security. But I find that I need to put some db's on the "production" box and could use a little assistance. I can manage with the bulk of the work but since mysql is all pre-configured on RH based systems I don't know where to find the root password or any other tidbits needed to get started. Access to the grant and other admin db's and tables is all I believe I need. Looking through the docs on centos.org didn't reveal anything to me (or I just missed it). So the end result of this message is simply can someone point me to the howto use mysql on CentOS/RHEL info. I just need to be able to start adding db's and such. Once there I'm good to go. SIze of reformatted USB drive

I just reformatted an 8Gb USB drive as ext3. While as FAT32, it was reported as having well over 7Gb free (did not note the exact capacity). I reformatted with mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1 Now it is reported (oh, this is with properties in Nautilus) as having 6.8Gb capacity (free space actually). Does this makes sense that ext3 has less available space than fat32?

Every time I touch something, pieces fall off! It's a good thing this stuff isn't in production yet (for me I mean). So I had an LVS, configured with Piranha, directing http test transactions across two servers. I used Piranha to add another realserver. It appeared in the lvs.cf file, but didn't appear in the ipvsadm output. So I stopped and restarted Pulse. And now *none* of the servers appear in the ipvsadm output. Pulse says it started clean, and nothing in the syslog. The gratuitous arp gets made, and the correct IPs are assigned to the correct interfaces. [ddb@prcapp02 ~]$ sudo ipvsadm IP Virtual Server version 1.2.1 (size=4096) Prot LocalAddress:Port Scheduler Flags -> RemoteAddress:Port Forward Weight ActiveConn InActConn TCP prcvmod01.pinerivercapital.l wlc That's the write service name (the ".l" at the end is ".local" truncated). WLC is the right scheduling mode. But no remote addresses are listed. fix firefox?

I once had firefox x86_64 installed (because it was the default). But that one has problems with plugins (flash, java), which are much easily solved by using the i386 version. So I unstalled firefox, and installed it again using: yum install firefox.i386 This worked, and even the plugins worked fine afterwards. I did have some problems when uninstalling, because yum insisted on a whole load of dependencies going up to uninstalling the package 'firstboot' (wow!). However I can't remember the exact details anymore. I do not remember having to force anything; just reinstall a little bit more than I was expecting to. I do remember that after the erase/install, no particular problems were left and I used firefox since then without any problems. Today came the update for firefox 3.0.2. So I did "yum update". The depencies included xulrunner and devhelp. However, yum complained about a conflict between xulrunner 1.9.0.1 being incompatible. So I erased xulrunner first (yum erase xulrunner). vncviwer in listen mode poer number

I am working on the Centos wiki instructions for doing an install via vnc: http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/VncHeadlessInstall CD is all burned and ready to go. I then thought about the viewer settings particularly the port number and firewall rules. When I connect vncviewer to a vncserver it uses port(s) 590n where n is the display number. OK, is that what happens when a server connects back to a -listen viewer? Seems not. According to the man page, it seems the default is port 5500, so I have to open up this port on the 'client' system and of course allow it through my internal firewall (or put the install system on the same subnet as the client and not the one with the repo server). Do I this figured out right?

I have several shell scripts to manage user accounts on a server. I've been using a file with the usernames of peoples accounts that any script needs to process. I had a thought that I can and should be setting up groups and adding user accounts to those groups so I don't have to maintain a set of files with the user accounts. So essentially, I am looking for a (simple) shell command to run from a bash script that will allow me to list user accounts that belong to a particular group. Any help is appreciated.

NFS issues

So I'm running nfs to get content to my web servers. Now I've had this problem 2 times (about 2 weeks since the last occurrence). I use drbd on the nfs server for redundancy. Now to my problem: All my web sites stopped responding so I started by checking dmesg and there I found a bunch of this errors || Aug 11 16:00:39 web03 kernel: lockd: server 192.168.20.22 not responding, timed out Aug 11 16:02:39 web03 kernel: lockd: server 192.168.20.22 not responding, timed out But when checking the nfs server lockd was running and I could access all the files from the webserver with ls, cd etc. The logs on the nfs server doesn't say anything of interest and checking apaches error_log just says "not found or unable to stat". Now I mentioned this have happened 2 times and both these times I've "solved" it by rebooting the nfs server and web servers. This isn't a good solution to have to reboot my servers every couple of weeks so I really could use some help. :) Also I get this from time to time on the web servers, dunno if it's related. /do_vfs_lock: VFS is out of sync with lock manager! /

I'm trying to get perl CGI programs to work from the cgi-bin (actually a sub-directory cgi-bin/various) and have set appropriate permissions using chmod 755. i add the "irqpoll" option to kernel line. after the system booted i log into X with tty1 also login as root with the command " tail -f /var/log/messages" for monitoring . After 10 to 20 minutes i got the same message again but this time immediately the system froze up ! i tried it 5 times now and each time is the same result.i also noticed that the system was behaving very slowly till the message came up like usually folder copy operation - i usually get 70-90MB/s according to vmstat 1 comand, but with irqpoll the maximum i noticed was like 10MB/s. Am i doing something wrong ?

Centos installed on OQO mod 2

Since I have a four of these units, and the XP recovery CD, I figured, "ah give it a go." And going through the Centos wiki, I found a simple piece I was missing: "linux text askmethod". There were a few problems I had with the text install: Disk Druid does not work with LVM partitions, much, in text mode. I was able to increase the size of the swap partition though... I missed the setup for a user other than root. I will have to do that separately. System came up in init 3 mode. Easy to fix. Video is 800x480. This is a problem for a number of dialog boxes. I tried to change the video, but nothing happened when I logged out and back in. still 800x480 (I selected Generic LCD for hardware then 1034 x 768). I read in one set of notes that using xvesa is better than vesa (which is what is being used now). How do I set that? Oh, /proc/cpuinfo reports 769 bogomips. Wait, this boot it is 830 bogomips? hmmm.

Dear All, i have the following centos FTP local FTP server having the following Centos 5 vsftpd-2.0.5-10.el5 its been running fine for abt 2 years or so Now with IE5 or IE6 when i say ftp://ip address of FTP server it asks me for the username and password and if its correct i directly go to the /var/ftp/pub directly which is perfect but only in IE7 when i do the above it takes me to root and i c the following ------ FTP root at 91.198.134.59 To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer and below is a long directory listing of the entire root filesystem which i can navigate n it not takes me to /var/ftp/pub now if i click on View => Open FTP site in Windows Explorer it again ask me for the username and password n after entering it works perfect wondering why this happen only wth IE7 browser apprecite your help regards Fabian and on top it dispalys FTP root at 91.198.134.59 To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explor now if i click on view=> open FTP Site in Windows Explorer it open a new window and ask me for username n passowrd and after emtering it works perfect thats is my root directory is now /var/ftp/pub now this above problem does not occur when the broweser is IE5 or IE6 its only with IE7 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Well, I finally did it..and used centos. I started out in 1997 with my little website with not much on it. It was a shared host account. Eventually I added some more sites and got to grow out and went to this new fangled thing called VPS. Lots of problems plagued me throughout that experience, some on ensim control panel, some on others. When chost.net (think that was their name) blew up (1999 ?) and I lost my sites I moved to OLM. Finally got big enough to go to the dedicated thing. My own server, managed by the hosting company. Years of that turned stale as recumbent issues of updating and control panels just made it not so good. I made the plunge and built my own server and colocated it. Only problem, which software. I decided on rhel, but found the support so stunningly unknowledgable I moved to centos since it made no difference free or paid, no tech support is really there anyway. And I do not like redhat having access to my servers like that. It was a long long trial by fire to learn sysadmin with linux. But lessened by the huge amount of pre-setups that are done with a centos install. I look at web pages and books that talk about untarring, installing and compiling, and just pass right by them (scared one day I may have to do that stuff). It was not easy making the jump. Especially deciding not to use a control panel. However, today, just minutes ago, I moved the final website from the dedicated host to my own server and cancelled the account. It is just a wonderful and elated feeling to know I have a good server with redundancy, great raid mirror, awesome software, great company updating security patches and a great company that repackages that for me from redhat. So far, other than the hardships of learning how to build the dang webserver with a ton of poorly instructed programs, centos has been sturdy, stable, and works like a charm, almost out of the box!! I would never want to repeat the experience of learning this stuff for the first time...never. But now that I passed what I hope is the last hard bump in the road, I can finally get some sleep, go outside, and start programming more websites. Thanks centos. And yes. I am compiling all my notes from start to finish on this webserver project and intend to print a book with a step by step...but only for centos. Eventually make it one big wiki site too. Thanks for everyone who helped, everyone who yelled, everyone who flamed, everyone who just laughed, and everyone who supported. Today, I am free from hosting companies! Hooooo- Aaaaaaaah!!!! And a big thank you to the team at Centos who take the time to package up the redhat binaries and make them work correctly...and for adding the updates so quickly to the mirrors. I hope my book will bring more people to centos as a perfect solution for a webserver. Gonna go to bed now...finally over.

Hi, The CentOS 5.2 release notes contain this warning: "A kickstart installation that attempts to use the *repo* directive (where that *repo* points to an updates repository) may fail to properly install." This is exactly the method that I had been using with CentOS 5.1 :-) What is the right way to achieve this now? Is adding a repository in the %post section of the kickstart file and running "yum update" safe? Anyone run into problems with this? Thanks in advance, Venkat

Trying the to install on the OQO, and hitting up against one problem I see a lot in the comments about installing various distros on it. That is its screen size. So I could install using the text installation except... What is the command line for text install and askmethod so I can use HTTP to access my local repo? What do I add to 'linux askmethod'? And if I go the text install route, can I do all of my custom disk partitioning? I seem to recall from when I fell intotext install on a system without enough memory, that I could not work with LVM in text mode. Or Can I set the video size in that 'linux askmethod' line? Here is a sample xorg.conf I have found: Section "Device" Identifier "Silicon Motion, Inc. Then the LVM partition has two ext3 partitions, one for / around 12Gb, and the other for /home as the rest. The drive is a 60Gb drive, so I might make / bigger: ext3 /boot 100mb swap 2Gb LVM Rest of drive (to 512byte multiple) ext3 / 12Gb ext3 /home rest of LVM

kernel and memory question

Currently at my university we are running many servers with Centos 4.6 and everything is okay, but when a user does a large operation such as 'cp' or 'tar' or 'rsync' all of the physical memory gets exhausted. Our lab servers have 32GB physical to 64GB of physical memory and when a user does a large copy which involves very small but over 10k files eventually we see a kswap process. I would like to control swapping so these files don't go into memory instead they get flushed out. These computers are used for fluid dynamics calculations and I would just like to have the memory do a FIFO and use the least swap as possible. I tried setting the swapiness to '10' or '0' but that really does not help. Also, has there been a major memory management advancement from 4.6 to 5.2? If so, where can I read about the changes? TIA

auto create user home by vsftpd

Hi everybody, we using our centos server with vsftpd and windbind. our users can log on via ftp on the centos server by using their windows-ad-domain-accounts. That's working fine. But vsftpd doesn't auto create user home dirs, if the user connects the first time to the system. Anybody some suggestions why? I am going over: ftp://ftp.oqo.com/unsupported/linux/OQOLinux.html This is for the 'older' model 1, I have the model 2. The files are 18 mo old, and relate to kernel 2.6.10. Of course I want to avoid a custom kernel, but please help me understand what is being covered here: "2. Enable crusoe processor in kernel .config CONFIG_MCRUSOE=y" What is the crusoe processor? 3. Programs such as 'hwclock' synchronize on the RTC periodic interrupt for accuracy. We need to disable RTC IRQ support in the kernel as we don't get the periodic interrupt. In the kernel .config set CONFIG_HPET_RTC_IRQ to 'y'. This enables the high performance event timer irq and in the process disables the rtc driver interrupt code: CONFIG_HPET_RTC_IRQ=y" How do I do this with the Centos kernel? "4. ACPI processor module (idle handler) interferes with transmeta longrun scaling. Set ACPI_PROCESSOR to 'n' or not set # CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR is not set" Does this mean I have acpi=none in the kernel line? I really hope not. "5. Kernel preempting option currently causes a bug to show up in the wifi drivers, turn it off CONFIG_PREEMPT=n" I would hope to be using the dkms madwifi stuff. Do I need this? "6. Download the latest rtl8150 drivers from CVS at: https://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=15970. The drivers in the base 2.6.10 tree will kernel panic upon removal of the dock. Copy the new driver to linux/drivers/usb/net/rtl8150.c" Don't see this as a problem as Centos has rtl8150 support. "7. In drivers/input/serio/i8042-io.h, add 'i8042_noloop = 1' in the function i8042_platform_init(). You only really need to do this if you have OQO subprocessor version 10/5 (It'll say 'EC Build 10/5' on BIOS post)." What is this all about? Still haven't actually tried an install.....

install of Pod::Simple through CPAN

I'm running CentOS 4.4. I'm trying to install swatch (a log watcher) using CPAN. It's getting hung up on trying to install a dependency, Pod::Simple So before I get too wrapped up in this, I have the following questions: 1. Is there an alternative way to install swatch? I didn't get a hit when I tried yum. 2. I'm not wedded to swatch. Is there another log checker out there that will work with CentOS? 3. ASUS P5GC-MX/1333+ WD SATA

Hi, I'm puzzled by an ASUS P5GC-MX/1333 with a WD320AAJS disk. My 5.2 DVD refused to see the hard disk. As the CD happened to have a bad MD5 sum, I assumed this was due to a bad burnt image. Backed off to 5.1. Installation of 5.1 to /dev/sda went OK, then I upgraded by yum to 5.2. But, at the next boot, the new kernel can't see the disk. Only when BIOS IDE Setup is "compatible" I can boot the new kernel. However, the disk shows up as /dev/hdc and performance is noticeably slow. If I choose any other mode, nash complains that any LVM groups can't be found and panics away. I/O in general is terrible. Copying a CDROM to a file with dd renders the machine nearly unusable. The kernel provided in 5.1 can work in the BIOS IDE Setup "enhanced/SATA" and performance is really good. Hdparm when under the current kernel says 3.51 MB/s buffered speed, whereas for the older kernel it claims some 111+ MB/s. I have updated the BIOS ROM to no avail. What am I missing? Centos Kernel 4.7 Compile Help

Hello Everyone, I wanted to recompile the kernel from source. I downloaded the source rpm (kernel-2.6.9-78.0.1.EL.src.rpm) from centos and installed the rpm. In /usr/src/redhat I unzipped and untard the linuxx-2.6.9 base files. After doing that I wanted to patch the kernel with the numerous patch files that came with the src rpm. The problem that I am having is that a lot of the patch files fail an example: patch -p1 < ../linux-2.6.9-megaraid-update.patch patching file drivers/scsi/megaraid/mega_common.h Hunk #1 FAILED at 27. 1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file drivers/scsi/megaraid/mega_common.h.rej patching file drivers/scsi/megaraid/megaraid_mbox.c Hunk #1 FAILED at 10. Hunk #2 FAILED at 217. Hunk #3 FAILED at 244. Hunk #4 FAILED at 286. Hunk #5 FAILED at 340. Is this not the right procedure for patching the kernel? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve

Need uuid rpm for CentOS-5.2

On my development system I have installed PostgreSQL 8.x from the yum.pgsqlrpms.org repository. I am getting a dependency error: Error: Missing Dependency: libossp-uuid.so.15 is needed by package postgresql-contrib I can find references to this file in an rpm for fc7 (uuid-1.5.1-3.fc7.i386) but nothing else. Is there a place that I can obtain a CentOS version of this package? Failing that, is installing uuid-1.5.1-3.fc7.i386 on CentOS-5.2 an option? OQO mod2 arrival

My OQO mod2s just arrived! All 4 of them; portable testbed here it comes!!! I hope.... The units weigh in at ~.75lbs, and measure aprox. 5 5/8 x 3 3/8 x 1 1/8" A little larger when you push up the 5" screen to reveal the keyboard. WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI, and a single USB built in; an adapter for VGA and Ethernet. (WiMax extra, I think the touch screen is also optional and I did not get that). The processor is a VIA C7-M 1.5Ghz processor, with 1Gb memory, and a 60Gb harddrive. XP pro installed. From XP tools, I have learned that: WiFi is - Atheros AR5006X5 Ethernet is - Realtek RTL8139 Video is - VIA/S3G UniChrome ProII IGP Audio is - SigmaTel Default screen res is 800x640 (can increase then use capacitor scroll bars). I have not looked to see if I can get into the BIOS, I expect to be able to boot from a USB CDdrive (it comes with a recovery CD). There are instructions on the net for installing UBUNTU (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OQO) but of course I want Centos on it. Should I be expect any supprises given what I have learned so far? Minimally, these will be test units so only basic Gnome functionality and of course server stuff (wired, wireless, bluetooth) need to work. Would be nice to make one my traveling notebook as well.

RAID / OS Monitoring tools ?

Hi List; I just got a new server (my first **real** server). It's a dell 2900 : quad core XEON (with a spare slot for a 2nd quad core chip) 8G memory (expandable to 64G) 8 hot swap SATA HD slots onboard PERC6i RAID controller etc I initially setup the system / RAID as follows: 1) booted off the dell setup CD 2) walked through the RAID setup and formatted the drives 3) the setup bombed when it asked for a RHEL install media (I suspect cause I gave it a CentOS 5 install DVD instead) 4) powered off 5) restarted the box with the CentOS DVD in the drive and installed CentOS 5 The RAID configuration was as I had set it up in the DELL setup cd so I'm happy. Now I want to be able to monitor the box, specifically with respect to the RAID drives so I'll know if one has gone bad and the RAID configuration has failed over to it. Anyone have any suggestions for tools to use ? Thanks in advance...

database diff's?

Hi, I'm trying to figure out what bits of info I need to ad to a DB to manualy add users to an app (eGW) and was wondering if anyone had a better way to find the differances in two states (pre/post change) of a database. Only thing I could come up with was to do a DB dump to a file before and after then run diff on them. Anyone have a slicker, better, faster, not a as gee-wiz there should be a better way to do this. Sendmail and headers

Hi all, Hope someone out there has experience with this. I can send, receive, and smtp my mail with my centos server fine and dandy. All the virtual domains headers for from and reply to and such are good. However, there is one field that I cannot change. (centos 5.2, dns, sendmail, virtualhosts all on same server) The ip and hostname of the server is coming up when the ehlo is called from the receiving server (like yahoo.com and gmail)..instantly tagging all mail as spam, but not deleting it. The header on the mails shows this.... Received: from 45.45.01.01 (EHLO server.myserverhostname.com) (45.45.01.01) Where it should have the ip address of the website and the website mail.website.com... I have played with masquerade_envelope, masquerade_as, masquerade_domain, etc...and about 100 different combinations. I have added the websites to etc/hosts in an effort to make that work too. I am assuming it is masquerade that will do it. But lost as to how to proceed. Is there anyone out there hosting some websites who could point me in the right direction. All the books and websites deal with multiple machines and masquerading all domains as the same...and not making them all different. I cannot conclude or solve this. Any help deply appreciated.

Earlier this evening, I had the interesting experience of shutting down my machine (because of that lp out-of-sync problem, discussed elsewhere), and watching it not come back up. I admit that I changed out one of my DVD writers for another one, but I don't understand how that could have had any effect on this: When I restarted the machine, it came up to the point where it normally shows: "GRUB Loading Stage 2..." Except, it stopped at the "GRUB" and hung - no stage 2, no disk activity, nothing, just hung. One of the changes I made a little while ago was to modify the boot order of my drives. I had been booting off of the hda drive, but now I'm booting from the sda drive. I went through the "grub-install /dev/sda" back then, then fixed the grub.conf because the disk id for the root was wrong (it was showing hd2, but in order to boot, this had to be set to hd0 because grub couldn't find anything on hd2 - weird, 'cuz that's where the /boot and / partitions both live, but I digress). I thought I'd be able to recover from this by booting from hda again, but that didn't work. So I put in my Live CD, booted from that and tried to fix it via grub-install from there - no go. Grub couldn't find /dev/mapper/livecd-rw (which wasn't there, although /dev/mapper/live-rw was - is that a bug in the live cd?) Then I went to my installation DVD, booted up into linux rescue mode (which took a few tries because I forgot to boot with linux rescue noapic), chroot'd to the right /dev and THEN I could finally run grub-install, and finally, the system rebooted from /dev/sda. I'm wondering: 1) What would cause the system not to get to the "Loading stage 2" part but be able to load GRUB? This one is really the key - if I can understand this, I can prevent it from happening again. 2) What's with the live CD not being able to run grub-install properly? (It also would not install using grub - I don't recall the exact error message, but it was something about there not being a stage 1 area on the drive, which makes no sense because it _does_ boot from that drive). 3) Is this the only way to recover from such an error (GRUB, no stage 2, not the lp error), or was there an easier way I missed? Restarting failed processes

We are running a process on a CentOS box, and periodically it dies. Does anyone happen to have any recommendations for a lightweight tool that can be used to monitor processes and restart them if they happen to fail? Need help transfering CentOS5 from desktop to laptop

created 2 partitions on laptop (/ and swap) formatted them. mounted both source and target (under /mnt on each machine) rsync -a / from desktop -> laptop (Note: OS on desktop is on sdb5. On laptop it's going to sda1) Now I need to put grub on mbr of laptop boot: linux rescue chroot /mnt/sysimage Here is my problem grub-install /dev/sda The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly. Utility of Centos liveCD

It appears that the liveCD (CentOS-5.2-i386-LoveCD.iso that I downloaded late last week) does not contain either netcat or tcpdump. Given the frequent use of a livecd for testing and debugging, those would seem to be key tools that should be available. Obviously a LiveCD can't contain everything anybody might ever want, but I'd give those two tools a pretty high priority; certainly much higher than, oh, sound-juicer, say, or openoffice.org-impress. (See me *not* asking for emacs in this space. building php4 against stock mysql on centos 5.2 64bit

Strange ! characters inserted into emails

I have never encountered anything like this before, so thought I'd post here and see if anyone can help. We have a java application that sends out notification emails to end-users. The body of the email is some boilerplate text and HTML that is pulled from a database. When the emails are received there are random instances of " !" (that's a space and a bang symbol) inserted into the email in various locations. For example a sentence that is supposed to read like this: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. ends up looking like this: The quick b !rown fox jumped over the laz !y dog. We combed through the source text and didn't find any unusual characters in the body of the text. Somehow these bang symbols are being inserted after the mail is handed off to sendmail. Does anyone have an idea how I can troubleshoot this further? Or maybe you've seen something similar in your environment? thanks Sean

Install X from DVD

hi all, I have an issue where I must not have selected X at install time as its not there. I dont have networking on this box. I can put the DVD back in unit but I dont have X to run and to software add/remove. How do I do this from the command line with no network so no yum install package. so mount the DVD, cd into the RPMS directory then what command do I run to install all packages for X from the current directory. can't get KRDC to connect to remove Windows server - how to make it work?

Hi all, I'm trying to connect to a remote Widnows server from my CentOS 5.2 / KDE 3.5.4-11, but everytime I try and connect I get the following error: Could not start rdesktop: make sure rdesktop is properly installed And I connect using krdc rdp:/remote.host.name - but I also tried krdc rdp:/ 1.2.3.4 from the command line. It pop's up the preferences box, where I specify the screen resolution, and then click connect. How can I get connected to a remote Windows server from CentOS / KDE? -- Kind Regards Rudi Ahlers

I did not change any option. and my os is fully up-to-date. just out of curiosity, i recently compiled a kernel from 2.6.26 tree and the problem did not manifest itself with the desktop running 24 hours. so is this a bug in the current centos kernel ?

Tomcat with squid username/password

Hi, I am trying to help my friend on this ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Hi, I have an application deployed on tomcat 5.5 with java 1.6.0_07. Occasionally the application needs to connect through our proxy to the outside to collect patches. I've added the following options to the JAVA_OPTS and restarted tomcat. -Dhttp.proxyUser =username -Dhttp.proxyPassword =password -Dhttp.proxyHost=proxy.company.com.au <http://proxy.company.com.au> -Dhttp.proxyPort=3128 Using snoop on the squid proxy I can see the requests, but the username/password combinations are not being sent and the tomcat application receives a 407/DENIED message. Is there a reason the username/password are not being sent? Our squid proxy uses both NTLM and basic authentication. thanks Harry

using NOPASSWD in sudoers

Hello Everyone, I am trying to change our /etc/sudoers (using visudo) to allow 2 commands to be run as root without a password, but it isn't working. Here is the part of the sudoers file that is in question. # User alias specification User_Alias FULLACCESS = doug, scott # members of the FULLACCESS User_Alias may run chown and chmod without a password FULLACCESS ALL = (root) NOPASSWD: /bin/chown, /bin/chmod # members of the FULLACCESS User_Alias may run anything but need a password FULLACCESS ALL=(root) ALL The part for requiring a password works, but not the NOPASSWD line. I have tried changing the order of these lines with no change in behavior. After each change to the sudoers file, I am logging out of the machine and logging back in to make sure that it is properly reading the changes. I have also replaced the list of commands with a Cmnd_Alias, with no change in behavior. Multiple Linux instances on the same box - dual/triple/etc boot ?

Hi List; I have a new dev server. As an independent consultant I want to maximize it's use. Some of my clients use RedHat/CentOS 64 bit, others Redhat/CentOS 32bit, some are even using Fedora and Debian. Here's my thought: I'd like to install each OS/version into it's own space on the disk. I'm thinking all I have to do is install one OS (say CentOS 64bit) and partition say 20% of the disk. Then once the install is done, boot into the latest fedora disk and do the same, etc. Is this correct ? Later I want to add a disk array and allocate a RAID mount point that can be mounted by any of the installed Linux'es when it's active. Is this do-able ? Easily ? Thanks in advance...

SNMP and OID/MIB/MRTG

Hi all. I am having an issue and quite frankly would rather not spend the entire next two days learning the entire snmp program. I am hoping someone out there has used MRTG and SNMP to make it work. I have both installed. Single server, polling itself. Question 1- does snmpd have to run as a daemon, or only run once so I can get OID and MIBs from it? Question 2- does anyone know the command in snmp to get the required OID and MIBs that MRTG needs to use? Or at least the name of it? There are a lot of poorly written man pages, but so far all of them require an MIB or OID to use the commands I have read. Question 3- since not going outside of the server, is there any security setting in some snmp config file that makes it only look on my local server and not allow others to use it or hack it? Question 4- all over the internet there are examples in MRTG using all sorts of made up names like 'crazyguy33@servername' and things like that for the cfg file. And alsoin the snmp forum posts, but no one really talks about where this name comes from other than it is assigned to your network device or something. Any help appreciated. I will post the final solution to how to configure snmp and mrtg to work on centos5.2 when I finally figure it out so no one else has to take all week to do so!!! Whoo hoo!!!

Network issues with CentOS 5.2

I am totally new to using CentOS. Linux in Genera really. I have decent experiencing with terminal code for Macs though. Here's the deal my Boss wants us to move more toward linux for some of our basic users. All I was supposed to do was install CentOS 5.2 and Open Office and disburse the machines. Simple enough right. So I did this with no issue. I ran the interface and installed only GNOME and KDE. After installation was complete I activated the eth-0 and had it on DHCP. I connected to the net fine and began downloading open office. I left for the day and came back and I can no longer get back online. The eth-0 wont even activate unless I manually enter a static IP but still can not establish a connection online. I treid reinstalling to no avail. Even built a completely new box and still no avail. I am using CentOS 5.2 i386 DVD. Like I said I am new to this so any guidance would be appreciated to get me into the Linux world. Strange browser displays with 5.x on Dell GX-260

I had been running CentOS 4.x for quite some time with no problems. Apparently I stubbed my toe when installing CentOS 5 final. Symptoms: various web sites are not properly displayed in Firefox 3.0.1 (or predecessors). In particular, cnn.com and any calls to Google display with a screen full of ascii characters rather than images. When I look at "page info" within Firefox, it shows "quirk" mode rendering rather than "standards compliant" mode. BTW, I'm running the same version (in fact, using the same DVD iso) on my home machine, a Gigabyte system I've cobble up, with no such problem. Any ideas out there? Dear Everybody, I am telling you the whole story, perhaps you can give me a better idea. Almost 3 years ago I purchased Arima HDAMA rev. G motherboard with integrated Silicon Image Sil3114 Serial ATA 4 Ports SATA I adapter. ( http://www.arimacorp.com/ViewProduct.asp?View=86 ) . BIOS version is 2.13. My intention is to make a file server, using linux software raid, so I bought 2 new shiny 1TB SATA II disks, and installed them. Unfortunately the system does not boot - hangs in the Sil 3114 BIOS initialization stage. Apparently this is a known problem with Sil3114 and Sil3112: ( http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=ata_drives&message.id=… ) The Silicon people have issued a BIOS update for this issue, however they explicitly state - only for ADD-IN cards. Perhaps, integrated controlers share the same eeprom chip with the motherboard BIOS, and an attempt to flash it - will render the system unbootable. For integrated controllers - the mainboard producer should provide the update. Apparently the Arima people have sold their business to http://www.flextronics.com/en/default.aspx. The new site is at http://www.flextronics.com/arima/server/Product/ViewDownload.asp?View=HDAMA…. The last BIOS update is from 8/30/2006. And I think this patch well predates the 1TB hard disks and has been issued before SiliconImage's patch: ( http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=28&cid=15… ) . So I am not willing to risk a BIOS update and I have decided to spend additional cash on a cheap but fast 4 port SATA II controller and use it with Centos 5.2. Where I reside, the following two have caught my attention: ADAPTEC SATA RAID 1420SA Serial ATA-150/Serial ATA II-300 PCI-X 4ch for 120 USD ( http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/Controllers/Hardware/sata/entry/AAR-1… ) and PROMISE FastTrak TX4300 Serial ATA II-300 PCI 4ch for 160 USD ( http://www.promise.com/product/product_detail_eng.asp?segment=RAID%200/1%20… ) Do you have any experience any of these 2 adapters, operating as plain SATA controllers, under linux software raid?
