When I let yum install the latest samba updates, it ate my smb users file and smb.conf. Once I restored those, it gave me several selinux avc denials, one of which I can't clear up. See http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2965 for details. Anyone else having problems like this? Dave

make rpm for kernel

I am compiling a custom kernel. When I do a make oldconfig, and then make rpm, I get a kernel rpm. The problem is I am not getting the initrd image. Is this normal? TIA

Iptables not blocking UDP port 53

I'm attempting to block access to port 53 from internet hosts for an internal server. This device is behind a gateway router so all traffic appears to come from source ip 10.100.1.1. Here are my (non-working) iptables rules: -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 10.100.1.1 -m tcp -p tcp --dport 53 -j REJECT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 10.100.1.1 -m udp -p udp --dport 53 -j REJECT Further down the ruleset I have these rules to allow traffic from everyone else. If these rules are removed then nobody can make queries, because of the final default REJECT rule. -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m udp -p udp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT I have used tcpdump and confirmed that packets are in fact still coming across from internet hosts. Firefox 3 for CentOS 4

Hi, I'm trying to make Firefox 3 work in CentOS 4. So far I was able to do it by installing the evolution28-* rpms, which have a more recent GTK, Cairo, Pango, etc. With those libs installed and configured, Firefox 3 from mozilla.org works fine. The only thing is that it doesn't use the "Bluecurve" theme as the other applications do. I was seeing that the evolution28-* packages use themes under /usr/evolution28/share/themes instead of the default /usr/share/themes. I can copy the bluecurve theme there, but the libbluecurve.so that actually themes the widgets is missing. I tried to make it work with one from CentOS 5, but with no luck. So I'm wondering. Has anyone made those evolution28-* libs work with themes other than the ones included? Or, going through another easier route: has anyone made Firefox 3 work well on CentOS 4? How? I know Firefox 3 is supposed to be released on RHEL 4.7 so, is there already any SRPM from RedHat I could use? Thanks! Filipe

Problem with Bonding Driver

Hi, I've using linux bonding in active-backup mode to combine two pairs of GigE NICs (eth0/eth1, eth2/eth3) into two logical bonds (bond0/bond1). All is working fine. However, I would like to specify a primary interface for each bond. This means I need to specify different options to the bonding module for each bond. I have tried every conceivable incantation of options and cannot get the kernel to recognize the second set of options. Initially, my modprobe.conf looked like this: alias bond0 bonding alias bond1 bonding options bonding mode=active-backup miimon=100 max_bonds=2 What I am trying to achieve should be possible by changing modprobe.conf to this: alias bond0 bonding options bond0 -o bond0 miimon=100 mode=active-backup primary=eth0 alias bond1 bonding options bond1 -o bond1 miimon=100 mode=active-backup primary=eth2 But this results in fatal errors while bringing up the bonding interfaces. Changing to this eliminates the errors, but bond1 ignores the different options: alias bond0 bonding options bond0 -o bond0 miimon=100 mode=active-backup primary=eth0 max_bonds=1 alias bond1 bonding options bond1 -o bond1 miimon=100 mode=active-backup primary=eth2 max_bonds=1 I have tried many other combinations as well: install bond1 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install bonding -o bond1 mode=active-backup primary=eth2 Nothing works. I also came across this note in the bonding docs: "NOTE: It has been observed that some Red Hat supplied kernels are apparently unable to rename modules at load time (the "-o bond1" part). Attempts to pass that option to modprobe will produce an "Operation not permitted" error. This has been reported on some Fedora Core kernels, and has been seen on RHEL 4 as well. On kernels exhibiting this problem, it will be impossible to configure multiple bonds with differing parameters." I have seen that error as well with certain combinations of options in my modprobe.conf. Am I simply out of luck here? Does anyone know of a solution? Thanks.

libc-client 2007 conflict when updating

FYI for others who might encounter this. I just did a yum update (C5.1) and after a very long download of packages I get a transaction test failure: Transaction Check Error: file /usr/lib/libc-client.so.2007 from install of libc-client2007-2007b-1.el5 conflicts with file from package libc-client-2007-3 I just realized this is coming from a conflict with a custom build I made of that package so that I could install uw-imap-devel as a prereq for building an asterisk package. It looks like I can just erase those two packages and the yum update should go through.

CentOS 5.2 VMI support

I'm using VMWare Server 2 RC1 to on top of CentOS 5.2 x86_64 running a CentOS 5.2 i386 guest. I have enabled VMI in VMware, so I guess it won't let me install if VMI wasn't available in the kernel? How do I know whether VMI is supported/enabled and what performance benefits can I expect from it? I'm still not getting full hard drive speeds (only getting about 1/3 when using hdparm -t ). Russ

The following packages are installed: glibc-2.5-24 httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3 mysql-server-5.0.45-7.el5 mysql-5.0.45-7.el5 php-gd-5.1.6-20.el5 php-mysql-5.1.6-20.el5 php-common-5.1.6-20.el5 php-pdo-5.1.6-20.el5 php-cli-5.1.6-20.el5 php-5.1.6-20.el5 php-imap-5.1.6-20.el5 If we remove the php-pdo / php-mysql packages, then the crashes stop. But, we need those packages, so that's not a solution. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? We've tried the obvious things; the only thing that's not "vanilla" here are a few settings in /etc/php.ini (having to do with max execution time and max memory). The php code that's being run does have its share of php warn/notices: PHP Notice: Undefined index: d in [snip] on line 1699 PHP Notice: Undefined index: verbose in [snip] on line 1819 PHP Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in [snip] on line 1695 So I would not be surprised if it is tickling something out of the ordinary, but it should still not be causing a segfault! Any thoughts as to what's going on here, and how to fix it? I'm tempted to install php 5.2.6 from utterramblings repo, to see if that works around this. Thanks!

Multiple LVM snapshots

I have a Centos 5.2 fileserver running LVM2, ext3 and Samba. I want to periodically snapshot a filesystem and offer them as read only backups to my users. I'm looking for something similar to what's available on Netapp filers. I am successfully able to create snapshots using LVM. But are there any performance issues in having multiple snapshots of the same filesystem at the same time? Is there any other way i can offer filesystem snapshots to my users? redirecting when behind a firewall

Hi.. I know this isn't a centos/rhel/fedora issue... but i'm hopeful that someone might have an answer!!! thanks VVVVVVVVVV Got a bit of an issue here, that I can't seem to resolve. I have a test domain on a dynamic service (dyndns.org) the test domain is foo.gotdns.com, which i have pointing to my external cable/dsl address. Here's my issue, I would really like to be able to have the external user be able to see multiple websites which might be sitting on different physical machines/apache servers within my network. Behind the modem, I have a firewall which is set up to port-forward the traffic to a machine with my network. So, for my example, the machine is dog (192.168.1.52), and the "foo.gotdns.com" would point to the app on the machine, based on the vhost setup in the dog httpd.conf file. However, I would also like to have multiple external test sites/domains, each of which might point back to sites on different internal servers. The forwarding capability of the router only allows for all wan * (addresses) to be forwarded to a given internal machine. At the same time, the external/internal ports have to match. So i don't have the ability to do something like "forward foo.gotdns.com to machine1, and forward foo2.gotdns.com to machine2" which is exactly what i'm trying to accomplish!! I've been looking into using vhosts, and the redirect functionaility, but I can't seem to get it to work, using the external domain name. So. i'm trying to: -be able to access multiple test sites, on multiple servers from a browser external to my network -be able to access the same sites, from inside my network, using the local/internal namespace -be able to access the same sites, from inside my network, using the external namespace (testing purposes) I've looked high/low for how to accomplish this with no real luck. thanks ps. I've seen others who've been looking for similar solutions, so this would definitely help. ps. I'm able to do a redirect from one server to another, if I restrict to using internal addresses. Just can't get the external stuff to work..

XEN virtualization Problem

Hi, I am trying to install windows XP on XEN. The Base operating system is Centos 5.1 I used GUI tool Virtual Manager. Once this Virtual manager is started is connected the XEN and QEMU. i used new tab placed below to install a virtual OS ( ex. Winxp.) after passing through the wizard. i wizard option for the partition a created a new 10 GB partition my case /dev/hda8 and then it asked the location where the os image was kept.i created a .iso image using dd command. then i specified the path where this iso image was kept in the wizard. then i told next and then finish button . it opened one more window and the installation of WinXP started. after some time it asked for reboot and it rebooted then it is asking for Winxp OS cd. i inserted into the DVD RW drive i mounted it but still its asking the same. please help me out what to do. is there any addition packages to be installed for recognizing the Cdrom or any other thing to be done. please guide me. I just set up a CentOS 5.2 system with bind9 (9.3.4-6.0.1.P1.el5) and I'm running up against a problem that seems to be related to SELinux. If I set named_disable_trans to 1, everything works as expected, but if I leave it enabled the server will only give me data for the zones for which it is authoritative. For external sites it returns a ServFail error. This is with nslookup and dig. If I start named from the command line with the command "named -u named", the server returns the expected response. tcpdump shows that the server is querying itself and getting a ServFail response. I figure that I'm missing something really basic, but not sure what. /etc/pam.d/system-auth changes in update

I just did an update, and PAM was was one of the modules. Yum has placed /etc/pam.d/system-auth.rpmnew and it's different than the existing file, which is actually a link to system-auth-ac. The files are slightly different, and I'm wondering if the differences are important. I can't find any docs on the reason for the change, so before I spend time becoming a PAM expert, I'm wondering if anyone knows why this change was made, or were it might be documented. Java Setup

Hi People I have been following the instructions here http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/JavaOnCentOS but trying to modify them for jdk-6u7-linux-amd64.rpm but there doesn't see to be a compatible java-1.6.0-sun-compat-*.rpm. Does one exist ? If not can anyone point me to some documentation on how I can manually set up things so alternatives will work allowing multiple Java versions. Thanks

Evolution in CentOS 5.2

(Probably OT) Has anyone else noticed these flaky (new?) behaviors in Evo since the 5.2 upgrade: - REALLY slow saving messages from inbox to another folder - search capability separated by folder instead of overall (with no option for control) - failure to autocomplete email addresses for known contacts I think that's it. I was wondering if it was just me, or if others had noticed this. (If it's just me, there is no need to reply....) Thanks. mhr

Problems with bind on 5.2

I'm having some trouble getting reverse zones right on 5.2. The zone files worked fine on a CentOS 4.6 machine, and the forward zones moved to the new server seem OK. But for some reason I can't get anything but servfail's on remote queries to the machine. But for some reason they will answer fine if I run "host ip.ad.dr.ess" on the local machine. I stopped the firewall to help debug this, but it still fails. Bind is listening on all the machines ip addresses. -- MailScanner is like deodorant... You hope everybody uses it, and you notice quickly if they don't!!!!

Bind update overwrites named.conf

I just had a customer's bind server lose all of it's local DNS records. Yum updated the bind packages this morning at ~6am, and replaced the original /etc/named.conf file, saving the old as named.conf.rpmsave. This seems like the opposite of what it should have done (i.e. save the new file as named.conf.rpmnew). There does not appear to be any difference between the originally shipped conf file and the new one, suggesting that the file should not have been replaced at all. Just wanted to through this out there in hopes it helps someone else before the phone starts ringing... Okay, I've narrowed the problem down quite a bit. This awk command pulls URLs from an apache config file, where $x is the config filename. awk '/:8008\/root/ {printf $3 "\t"}' $x The URL that is output by the script looks something like this: ajpv12://hostname.network.company.com:8008/root Is there a way to alter the output so it only shows "hostname" by itself? Do I need to pipe this through awk again to clean it up?

So I do not want to run radvd on my public subnet (between the gateway and firewall). I am trying to set up the firewall's public interface. Most of this can be done with Linux as well, but I'm not 100% sure about the AV part. How will I use / setup CentOS to check all traffic coming in & out (HTTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, etc) for virusses and clean them? 1st static IPv6 address

My ISP assigned prefix is: 2607:F4B8:3::/48 So I am building my internal IPv6 firewall/router/ etc. I want to have a static IPv6 address on its eth0 so that I can create static v6 routes to it from the gateway. I add the following lines to ifcfg-eth0: HWADDR=00:40:F4:05:A8:F1 IPV6INIT=yes IPV6_AUTOCONF=no IPV6ADDR="2607:F4B8:3:1" if-up eth0 gets the error: Error: an inet prefix is expected rather than "2607:F4B8:3:1/64". ERROR : [ipv6_add_addr_on_device] Cannot add IPv6 address '2607:F4B8:3:1/64' on dev 'eth0' What is missing? Why is it not building an address of 2607:F4B8:3:1:0:40:F405:A8F1 ? I am reading: file:///usr/share/doc/initscripts-8.45.19.EL/sysconfig.txt for my 'inspiration'. Other sources are welcome... OH, /etc/sysconfig/network does have the line: NETWORKING_IPV6=yes

I have a CentOS 4.6 server running dhcpd. One of my client devices (a Panasonic KX-HCM280A camera) is trying to get a lease from that server. Slow HVM IO performance with newer kernels

Hi list. I am testing CentOS 5.2 now. I experience much slower IO under HVM Guests with the newer kernels, so I started some measurements. DOM-0 is a fully upgraded CentOS 5.2. DOM-U is CentOS 5.0 not upgraded at all for testing purposes. DOM-U sits on an LVM Volume. No other services are running. Hardware was freshly rebooted every time. within DOM-0 dd if=/dev/vgpentanol/lvol2 of=/dev/null bs=1M count=1000 gives 134 MB/s so thats the bare metal value. within DOM-U dd if=/dev/hda of=dev/null bs=1M count 1000 gives 50 MB/s with DOM-0 kernel 2.6.18-53.1.19.el5xen 10 MB/s with DOM-0 kernel 2.6.18-92.1.1.el5xen 10 MB/s with DOM-0 kernel 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5xen so there has been a drop to 20% of the performance within 2.6.18-53. Any Ideas? The machine is a test system - so I am open to any changes in configuration you might suggest. As a side note: A PV Guest gets 85 MB/s no matter which kernel. Henry

yum dependency problem

Hi: Today when I do yum update I get this: Resolving Dependencies --> Running transaction check --> Processing Dependency: libdirectfb-0.9.so.25 for package: mplayer ---> Package directfb.i386 0:1.0.1-1.el5.rf set to be updated ---> Package amrnb.i386 0:7.0.0.2-1.el5.rf set to be updated ---> Package gsm.i386 0:1.0.12-1.el5.rf set to be updated --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: libdirectfb-0.9.so.25 is needed by package mplayer and I have to admit I don't understand that.... it says it's going to update directfb.i386 then it says directfb is required by mplayer. Huh? perhaps it means it's trying to replace my existing directfb with a DIFFERENT verson and can't because mplayer needs the existing one? the existing directfb I have is: directfb-0.9.25.1-1.el5.rf which came from the same repo as my mplayer: mplayer-1.0-0.38.rc1try2.el5.rf so am I to assume that some other repo (with a greater priority, since I'm using the priority plugin) is trying to overwrite the one I got from the rf repo? the base repos (base, updates, addons and extras) are all priority 1, centosplus and contrib are 2. rpmforge is 10. that's all there are. What's wrong here? I just had the misfortune to press Shift-{print screen} accidentally while in a Gnome desktop, and the result was a completely unresponsive system where the only recovery was a power switch initiated shutdown. Further investigation shows the runaway creation of gnome-screenshot processes. System is CentOS 5.2 fully updated on an Intel i686. CentOS 5.2 kernel [2.6.18-92.1.1.el5] crashes on dual-PIII Compaq ProLiant 3000

After yum upgrade, the new CentOS5 kernel [ kernel-2.6.18-92.1.1.el5.i686 ] crashes each time early in boot process on Compaq ProLiant 3000 with dual Pentium3 CPU (600 MHz, CPU0: Intel Pentium III (Katmai) stepping 03, CPU1 the same). I get kernel panic at powernowk8_init+0x05e/0x1c3. The previous kernel [ kernel-2.6.18-53.1.21.el5.i686 ] seems to work fine. I am wondering if anyone has met this on PIII CPU ? I have found 99.9% identical problem on http://www.nabble.com/net-5501-and-RHEL5.2-td18024549.html (only esp and task slightly different from what I have seen on screen after crash, all other registers, call trace, code bytes identical to my case) , but that was on a different CPU. On the other hand, I run CentOS upgraded to 5.2 on a home PC with PIII (single CPU, Abit motherboard with i440BX chipset) with no problem. Is it normal, that powernowk8_init gets called on PIII CPU? Flaky desktop audio behavior.

Might have some kind of bug here. I want to know if anybody else is seeing this. It's happened twice now, so I should be able to repeat it. $ rpm -q centos-release centos-release-5-2.el5.centos On my desktop, I "su -" to another user. Then "nohup thunderbird", it gets the mail and plays the announcement. ISTM this is an error right off the bat as this user is not the desktop owner. But that's not the main point. I really am OK with that behavior in my instance. The problem is that the sound system goes muted, as indicated by the volume control on my desktop panel and I can't recover from it except by a reboot. When I try to open the sound control panel, I get an error panel saying "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found". If I just try to un-mute, there's no error message but the status does not change. I've attached a snapshot of the error panel. Further, in chasing another problem that Jim (hce) had, we have done this: # find . -type f -exec echo {} \; -exec cat {} \; >/tmp/asound.play.bug Normally it acts as expected but now I get this. cat: ./acpi/event: Device or resource busy cat: ./sys/net/ipv6/route/flush: Operation not permitted cat: ./sys/net/ipv4/route/flush: Operation not permitted cat: ./sys/fs/binfmt_misc/register: Invalid argument cat: ./sysrq-trigger: Invalid argument and it hangs right there. <Ctl>-<C> breaks OK. I feel it might be related to Jim's problem. I feel it might be a bug. Can anybody reproduce? I think the T'bird step is coincidental. I think any sound played as another user should reproduce it. Hmmm ... I might be assuming to much if I assume another user is significant. TIA -- Bill

Need basic PPPoE startup help

I need basic PPPoE startup help. adsl-start DID bring up my PPPoE link (ppp0) to my ISP over eth0 via the DSL modem/bridge. My IPv4 CIDR block is routing and Shorewall is doing the firewalling. But shorewall has to be started after ppp0 is up and working. For now this means running shorewall restart (or start?). Shorewall 4.2 will have a way to restart shorewall without recompiling, I learned on the their list. In /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 I have: BOOTPROTO=dialup NAME=DSLppp0 DEVICE=ppp0 TYPE=xDSL ONBOOT=no Should ONBOOT be changed to yes, or is there some startup script that I should add the /sbin/adsl-start ppp0 command line followed with the shorewall restart command? I am away at IEEE 802 plenary meeting next week, and I need this to be automated in case of system glitches. Also sometimes the Speedstream just stops forwarding datagrams. Supposedly if it overheats. This requires a power recycle for the speedstream (and my ISP will not use anything else for the modem services). I suspect this will glich the PPPoE connection as well, so I will need some sort of watchdog and a restart of ppp0 and Shorewall. Attached is a rather large script of a user that I picked up on the Shorewall list for some Linux distro. I am NOT a script reader, let alone writer. pm-utils - ATrpms updates a system package on the stable branch

I performed a clean minimal CentOS 5.2 install, fully updated the system, and then added the ATrpms repository. When I perform an update after adding the ATrpms repository, the package pm-utils is updated the the ATrpms repository. My understanding is there should not have been any updates as the stable version does not update system packages, right? "The CentOS 5/RHEL 5 repository from atrpms.net is safe to use, if you only use the stable version. Packages in there do not overwrite system packages." Hi Friends, I am using Centos 5.2 and using ProxyPass to access applications running on other servers. Everything is working fine except for one of the applications I need to auto add forward slash when any user tries to access that application. For ex ProxyPass /testdiary http://testdiary.example.com/ ProxyPassReverse /testdiary http://testdiary.example.com/ If somebody access directly http://testdiary.example.com/ everything is coming means the login page but when the same link is accessed through apache server on which proxypass is running then the login page does not appear(http://portal.example.com/testdiary). How can I auto add "/" when somebody put the url http://portal.example.com/testdiary which should first be converted/redirected to http://portal.example.com/testdiary/ (auto added forward slash). I have the below lines added in httpd.conf file RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} /testdiary RewriteRule /testdiary(.)$ /testdiary/ ProxyPass /testdiary http://testdiary.example.com/ ProxyPassReverse /testdiary http://testdiary.example.com/ Please let me know if you need any other information. Hi, I need to run /bin/mount and /sbin/mount.cifs commands as nobody user (it has (bin/bash shell). So, I've edited /etc/sudoers and added: Cmnd_Alias CMD_MOUNT = /bin/mount Cmnd_Alias CMD_CIFS ) = /sbin/mount.cifs nobody ALL = NOPASSWD: CMD_MOUNT nobody ALL = NOPASSWD: CMD_CIFS But when I run the command as nobody (in the shell), I get the error: "mount error 1 = Operation not permitted" Any ideas ? Problems with some rpms in my local repo

This is perplexing. on a Centos 5.1 box that I am trying to upgrade, I keep getting: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error unknown url type: media> from my local repo. I did a blank system install via http from this server with no problem. USB not detected after update

Hi all, currently on a lenovo R60, after upgrading the CentOS 5.1 I cant detect the USB device any more. The initial installation doesnt have any problems at all. Cannot find solution in forums and bugs either. I am not sure if its a bug or wrongly did an update. The lsusb did not show the device. I'm trying to install CentOS 5.2 on a Dell PE 1850 via the DRAC 4 card, with CentOS-5.2-i386-bin-1of6.iso mounted as virtual media. At the boot prompt, I hit <Enter>, which should start the graphical installation, but it starts off with a text installation. I am asked - whether I want to test the media, which I skip - what language I want to use - I select English - what keyboard I have - I select us - the installation method - "What type of media conatins the packages to be installed?" I have the choice between - Local CDROM - Hard drive - NFS image - FTP - HTTP but not virtual CDROM. How can I get it to install from the virtual CDROM? (and no, choosing Local CDROM doesn't work). Why is the question there in the first place? It got that far using the virtual media, so why not simply continue using it? Kind regards, Herta P.S. Hi all! Maybe I'm just being silly here, but I'm wondering if anybody has ever used their computer for sharing files over USB. That is, the computer pretends to be a USB mass storage device. This could be useful for connecting to media players and such that support you plugging a USB harddrive or memory stick. Surely, somebody must have thought of this before :-D regards, Bent

install from USB thumdrive

Hi all Is there a procedure to use an 8GIG thumbdrive to copy the centos 5.2 dvd contents to the thumbdrive then run isolinux (or something like it) and be able to use the thumbdrive as the install media? Seems like it should work, however my machine only has syslinux not isolinux. yum provides isolinux does not return anything. Anyway I was trying to get to a point where I can just stick a USB fab in a machine, have the fab setup with the correct kickstart and everything so it just installs. I cant modify a DVD but a fab I could put the kickstart files on and nothing to type. jerry

Drive activity every 30sec

I have a Centos installed on a Hitachi 2.5" drive that shuts off really quickly, it seems. So every 30 sec, the drive makes the sound of an access activity. I have looked trying to find what might be being updated. Swap drive usage is 0 bytes. No activity in /var/log. What might it be and can I do anything to lessen the drive access (improve battery life)?

Centos 5.2 and 2.6.18-92 Kernel backported SATA fixes?

Last year to get motherboards with the G33 chipset with SATA working with Centos I had to either use David Harbic fixes or use Fedora 8 since it had the later 2.6.25 kernel. I no longer see David's fixes available and also see in the 5.2 release notes "update SATA driver and infrastructure". Did Redhat finally incorporate fixes to full support the new G33 chipset and SATA? I have more of these G33 chipset motherboards with Q6600 cpu. Trying to decide which is the least hassle setup and long term i386 or x86_64, on either Centos 5.2 or Fedora 9?

CentOS mount doesn't support smbfs type ?

Hi, I'm trying to mount a Windows folder from a Linux box with the command: # mount -t smbfs (...) but I get the error: "mount: unknown filesystem type 'smbfs'". Does this mean that CentOS mount doesn't support smbfs type ? If so, how can I enable it ? I'm using 5.1 Any help would be appreciated. Warm Regards, Mário Gamito

Firebug 1.2.0b4 for FF3

The current beta version of Firebug doesn't appear to install on Firefox 3 on CentOS 5.2, apparently because it's reporting itself as 3.0b5 rather 3.0. I tweaked the minVersion requirement in the xpi to 3.0b5 and it seems to be working fine for me now. In case anyone else is interested in testing it, my tweaked version is available here: http://www.openfusion.com.au/labs/dist/firebug-1.2.0b4-fx.xpi If it turns out to be stable we might be able to convince the firebug team to relax the minVersion requirement for us CentOS users. That's a nice trick though, I noticed after the 3rd attempt that it goes to our domain registrars nameservers, then segment faults again. But I'm sure this will do the trick On another server it worked as expected, and I could see which nameserver returned the query. Couple of CentOS 5.2 dhcp notes

1. Apparently, since I updated from 5.1 to 5.2, dhcpd no longer wants to stay running. The config is sound, and I can start it from the command-line with the "-d" flag and it serves up leases. But without the -d flag, it just silently dies... 2. Syslog contains this little snippet: dhcpd: Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Server V3.0.5-RedHat Figured you'd want to know... ;) -I

I have a newly built drive with 5.2 fresh install (that I will be cloning shortly) in my DECtop and it is failing with X the same way the upgrade from 5.1 drive did (not too supprising there). In 5.1 X worked. I could startx from init 3 and get into GNOME. Also VNC into the box and have a GNOME screen. With 5.2, I get a kernel panic. Well I guess it is a kernel panic because once I run startx from the console, my SSH session to the box from my notebook is frozen. I then move the drive and run system-config-display to get the unit to read the hwconf file and reset xorg.conf. This worked fine in 5.1. In 5.2, the system hangs. What to do? btw, i tried pci=noapci with no change. A couple other facts about this system. No accessable bios. When the system is booting (in character mode) the video frequently goes off then back on; some refresh problem. I have also seen this at times in a session on the console when I enter some commands. It would be nice to fix this. It might also tie in with the X problem. Thank you for your continued help. .

Hello, I have several systems which I recently updated with yum -y update to all the latest packages. These systems use yum-priorities and use the CentOS (priority 1) EPEL (priority 5) and rpmforge (priority 10) repositories. After the updates, dhcpd stopped working with a SIGPIPE error which occurs shortly after it attempts to fork into the background. I worked around that problem by building a new server with no additional repos, only CentOS and dhcpd works fine on that system. Since then I have found the problem, or similar problems with a few more applications. Help with gnome terminal

I am experiencing a problem with gnome terminal, most likely caused by something that I have done and which I need to undo. The problem is that somehow the gnome configuration has been changed so that the "Contents" menu item under "Help" in Gnome Terminal has the character "space" mapped as a keyboard accelerator. I would prefer that this be mapped to just about anything else, in fact, nothing at all would be best. I have gone to system/preferences/keyboard shortcuts/ and it indicates that "Launch Help Browser" is mapped to F1. There does not seem to be any other entry therein relating to help. CentOS 5.2 Missing Dependancy

I am trying to install perl-Digest-Perl-MD5 from rf and it is failing suggesting it needs /usr/bin/false. #yum whatprovides "/usr/bin/false" yields nothing. My CentOS 5.1 machines don't have this, and this is the same list of yum install items I always use when setting up assp. Any idea what to do? jlc

MySQL in CentOS 5.2

Hi, I've just installed MySQL (mysql.i386 5.0.45-7.el5) and lighty (lighttpd.i386 1.4.19-1.el5.rf) to the CentOS 5.2, but could not find mysql and lighttpd scripts in /etc/init.d. Also there is no /usr/bin/mysql_install_db. Where can I find mysql and lighttpd scripts for starting the processes in init.d? Thank you. Jim

Desktop: Evolution & Bug Buddy issues (GNOME)

Is this issue in the CentOS Bugzilla or Upstream Bugzilla? I use a fully updated CentOS 5.2 box. Frequently, when I close Evolution, I get a message from Bug Buddy, the Bug Reporting Tool, that Calendar has crashed. I do not use the Calendar Application. I use Evolution for email and contacts. Getting something into centosplus for 5.2?

I've got a USB to serial adapter that I picked up from Radio Shack earlier this year. The updated pl2303 driver is already in the mainstream kernel as per https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=429652 but I'm not getting much traction from Red Hat as far as them updating the kernel. So every time there's an updated kernel, I have to rebuild the srpm. I figure that this is the kind of situation that -plus is meant to solve... I've already had to switch one of my boxes over to plus today given that the video4linux srpm (from atrpms) won't rebuild easily on 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5, and I'm thinking that having both on plus with everything I need in them would make it a lot easier... (There's already precedent here... I found linux-2.6.18-bz443853_powernow_null_deref.patch and linux-2.6.18-bz444759_hi_iowait.patch in the srpm...) Thanks for reading... -I

Three Identical systems - short cut to setting up the drives?

I am building three identical systems. Well they will have different host names, and with time the software setups will drift. But at install time they are identical. Is there some way, (with dd I might guess) to do a hardare level copy? All three drives are Hitachi DK23DA-40F (40Gb). Supposedly factory reconditioned (they are in sealed bags with a drive sticker stating: "Refurbished to Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Specifications"). I would want to copy the paritition table and my 3 partitions (/boot, swap, LVM (/ and /home ext3 partitions in the LVM)) and all their contents. Thing is I only have one USB drive enclosure so I would be running from the drive I want to copy from. I would hope this is faster than 2 more installs.

My daughter needs to send me a large file. It appears that it is getting through my ISP, but being rejected on my CentOS mail server. The message she's getting says A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: anne@localhost SMTP error: 552 5.3.4 Message size exceeds fixed limit Reporting-MTA: dns; borg2.lydgate.lan I presume that this is a configurable limit, but I'm not sure where to look. Since it says MTA I'm thinking that it's probably postfix. Can someone please tell me what parameter I'm looking for? Thanks I have reams of documentation printed out. I'll start wading through that tomorrow, but time is of the essence with this one. Anne

This was working in 5.1 - I am now getting errors when I try to run a flash video in seamonkey under CetnOS 5.2. I could ask on rf list but it wont let me subscribe so that's of no help:/ Is there an obvious reason for this, or another bizarre erroneous dependency issue? Thanks! jlc

PPPoE and IPv6

I am not getting my IPv6 address and prefix delegation for my ppp interface on my new gateway. ppp is working right. It is getting authenticated and getting the its IPv4 address. Shorewall is doing the forwarding and the static routes on the internal interface for IPv4 are working. But no IPv6. Here is my ifcfg-ppp0: USERCTL=no BOOTPROTO=dialup NAME=DSLppp0 DEVICE=ppp0 TYPE=xDSL ONBOOT=no PIDFILE=/var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid FIREWALL=NONE PING=. I do have iptables off, as I am using shorewall that uses netfilter. I will be using ip6tables once I get things going. Hi, For Ethernet and others, we have a configuration file inside /etc/sysconfig/newtork-script/ like ifcfg-ethx where we specify ip address, mask, type etc... Hi, we have a new customer to support. They have RHEL5 not CentOS5. Is there a summary of the differences between RHEL and CentOS? We have come across differences in how yum works. There is magic involving the rhnplugin that connects us to invisible repositories not mentioned in the yum config files, interacts with the web interface via rhn.redhat.com, ... We wonder if there are other differences that we have not yet stumbled upon, that might create issues in the future. -- Drew Einhorn

how to generate modprobe.conf

Hello, i have moved hard disk from one pc to another (some architecture). I have booted, everything working. To my surprise some modules in modprobes.conf are still there even if this PC does not have such hardware. I have tried remove modprobe.conf, but after reboot, system by it self does not generate a new one modprobe.conf. What is responsible for modprobe.conf generation, how can i revoke it to generate a modprobe.conf such as is generated after fresh install. Thanks in advance! David

Can't run a bash script from USB drive

I just tried to run a bash script (called "whose") from my USB drive and I get this: bash: /mt/bin/whose: /bin/bash: bad interpreter: Permission denied I did some googling and found that this is because my USB drive is mounted with noexec permission. When I was running FC8, this was not the case. How can I control this (i.e., allow 'exec' on my USB drive(s))? Thanks mhr

mkdep vs. makedepend

Where I work, we have an application that has been merrily running away (and being built) on FC1 (yes, you read that right). One of my assignments is to bring this up to CentOS, but on my first effort, I ran into this interesting "feature." The original build process (FC1) uses mkdep to generate the dependency files that are subsequently used by the makes to build the app. mkdep does not exist in CentOS 5.2. There is a makedepend command that operates slightly differently. Can someone enlighten me on this, particularly w.r.t. 1) how do I use makedepend to generate the same files mkdep did and is this a good idea (my impression is that it's not really that hard but also not necessarily a good idea or 2) convert all the makefiles to be makedepend friendly (seems relatively easy, though fairly extensive, but probably a better idea and also harmless should I wish/need to continue to build on the FC1 system? Probably a really basic question or two, but neither google nor the archives have a good article on this that I could find. Thanks. mhr

Greetings, all. I'm in need of a minimal ks.cfg file for the smallest possible install with yum. I've got the scripting for yum to install the apps I need, I just want to insure all the cruft is not on the system as well. Using the s-c-ks app, the smallest I have gotten is 600MB. I am trying to compile a module for a Realtek 8168 for thinstation. I have pulled the developer tarball and executed the script to enter its build environment. I also have the source for the module I want to compile, but when I execute #make clean modules it errors out. Reading the errors, I can see it tried to look for the kernel source of the systems actual running kernel. From within the chroot build environment, I run a #uname -r and see it displays exactly that, and not the build environments expected 2.6.21.1 that it has in the /source/kernel-2.6.21.1/linux-2.6.21.1 dir. I have ran an #export KERNELSRC=/source/kernel-2.6.21.1/linux-2.6.21.1 Any ideas on what's left to convince make it is running with the expected kernel and not my actual one? Thanks! jlc

I'm having a spot of bother with a large (900GB) partition. fdisk claims it's 900GB. I made an ext3 fs on it and df says it's only 94GB. Which is correct? Or did I do something wrong?

Hello, Our environment: CentOS 5.2 (updated over time with "yum update", current "yum update" lists about 7 packages out of date), x86_64. Running Xen, building Xen DomU's with kickstart. We are trying to debug the %post part of the kickstart process for DomU and are hitting difficulties in accessing the output. For a start, the "cmdline" directive in the kickstart seems to be ignored and it stays in "text" (ncurses) mode.
