I wanted to install the rpmforge-release package on a new install and get the following. mod_python - apache crash

one of my developers is using a mod_python module called xml.dom.minidom and its causing the issue as outlined below http://www.dscpl.com.au/wiki/ModPython/Articles/ExpatCausingApacheCrash This is on CentOS 4.5 and so Apache 2.0.52-38 - I cant change the OS version but i could change the apache and or mod_python version. Does anyone know of any fixes to this apart from rolling my own? thanks

Anyone using TCP Connection Passing?

Hello, We are looking at ways to improve our cluster fail-over and one thing that we wonder about is the possibility of passing tcp connections from the primary server to the secondary when the primary dies. I found tcpcp (http://tcpcp.sourceforge.net/) and tcpcp2 (http://tcpcp2.sourceforge.net/) but they seem to be inactive (last release was two years ago) and requires also changes in the application level. I though that I saw somewhere an implementation of the simple idea of having the secondary tracking the connections (sort of "shadowing" the primary) and when the primary disappears it can take over everything. e.g. the following points to some interesting links: http://archive.gscept.com/2006/dev/?p=266 Has anyone here got to implement something like this? Root-filesystem remounts as read-only during 5.2 upgrade (system completely shoot)

Judging from the frequency of my messages here one could think that I'm too stupid to upgrade a workstation to 5.2 (but the servers I've tried work without problem) OK. The problem: I've tried to upgrade a 5.1-x86_64-workstation to 5.2. During the upgrade immidiatly after (according to the /var/log/messages) upgrading the two (64 & 32-bit) libgcc-packages an EXT3-error occurs and the root-partition gets remounted in read-only-mode. Consequently ALL following package upgrades throw errors saying this or that can't be done because he can't write to /etc, /usr but in the end yum says everything is OK. (Side info: /var is on a different partition, so it is still writeable) At reboot the machine wants a manual fsck which throws a lot of errors. Then the machine reboots with with a lot of error messages (basically because it can't find /lib64/libgcc_s.so.1 (nothing a symlink can't fix). After that I try to fix things by manually upgrading the libgcc-packages (otherwise yum won'T run). "rpm -q" for selected packages shows that the majority of the packages is still in 5.1-state. Trying to "yum upgrade" again fail because the machine can't find any servers (but network functionality seems OK) So I try to reboot. And now the really strange thing happens: A simple "rpm -q rpm" says that no rpm is installed. Rebuilding the rpm-database doesn't help. So I'm a bit stuck here with a machine that is in limbo. My questions: what could have been the cause for this (the machine was working OK before that). The only thing I feel a little guilty about was deinstalling the nvidia-kernel-driver and not reboot, but this can't f### up the file-system, can it? Any suggestions what I can do to get the machine into a normal state again (apart from reinstall from scratch)

CentOS 5.2 vs. Intel 82801 AC'97 Audio

I have installed 5.2 on my work desktop and everything works perfectly EXCEPT the sound device. Here is the relevant lspci line: 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01) I tried looking in Google (might have been a bad search), but all I could find was to add acpi=on to my boot line in grub.conf, and that didn't do any good. The volume control shows muted and I can't enable it. What am I missing? Thanks. mhr

X config files basically. Could be done with different kickstart files - but would like to not go there if I dont have to. Jerry

FF3 printing problem on Centos 4.x

I'm using Centos 4.x (fully up to date) on a system at work. I have also been using firefox 2 (directly from mozilla.org) on it for a long time, and it tends to work just fine. yesterday I installed the new FF3 release. It works fine too, with one exception: The print dialog shows no printers! The print button is greyed out! There actually four or five printers defined on the system, and all other apps find them fine, including FF2. So far no one has replied to my query on the mozillazine forums. My first notebook upgrade: I repaired my old HP nc4010 (bought a new hinge on ebay) and realized this was the perfect way to test out the upgrade to 5.2 before doing it on my production notebook. First I updated to 'current' 5.1 (by current I mean I have not synced my 5.1 local repo since building my 5.2 repo). I had not used my nc4010 for a while and the kernel was at 2.6.18-53.1.13 (update took it to 1.21). Rebooted and system still working. I then pointed my CentOS-Base.repo to my 5.2 repo. INIT 5 and system is gone

I had been running a system on Centos 5.1 at INIT 3. I did the upgrade to Centos 5.2 with the aid of the powernowk8 patch. Previously I would VNC into the unit when I needed to do admin stuff with a GUI. Well I noticed that I was NOT getting GNOME via VNC since the upgrade (worked before just fine with 5.1). So I tried an INIT 5 from the command line (always worked before), but the system seemed to hang. Video was off. I rebooted, went to INITTAB and changed init to 5 and rebooted. Probably a tragic mistake. Now on boot, right after UDEV gets an OK, the screen goes blank and the drive stops turning. I tried booting with the 5.1 kernel, and same behaviour with the system blanking out and all load activity stopping after UDEV loads. So I am quite stuck at this point. Is there an option that I can edit into the kernel command at boot time to init in 3? And then what do I try? If I have to reload Centos, I have to pull the drive, put it into another system, install there, etc. Not my idea of a fun day....

Hi! I'm messing about with an old Toshiba Tecra laptop. i've got wireless working well using NetworkManager and WEP. But I'm interested in finding out if it is possible to get WPA/TKIP or other WPA variants to work with that driver. According to dmesg, boottime diagnostics include: eth0: Hardware identity 0005:0004:0005:0000 eth0: Station identity 001f:0001:0008:000a eth0: firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 8.10 ... eth0 Station name "HERMES I" I've been googling a lot and most of what I see seems to indicate that there's no WPA support in that hardware, but that it may be possible to do WPA anyway if the drivers have the right set of patches. But so far I've not found anything definitive, especially not something that goes back far enough to be in a modestly old product like Centos 5.2. but anyway, if anyone knows anything about this I'd appreciate some hints. How did you configured the pppoe link? I have been using the adsl-setup command from the rp-pppoe package to configure the dsl link, it generates the ifcfg-ppp0 file on /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts with the values needed to bring the link up such as the username, network interface to use, etc. Also the adsl-setup command stores the username and password on the chap-secrets and pap-secrets files under /etc/ppp After the dsl is configured you can bring it up /down with the adsl-start adsl-stop commands. __________________________________________________ Correo Yahoo! I need to set up static routes on eth1 for these IPv4 addresses (different subnets to different internal firewalls). What tool do I use to set these? And then I get to work with IPv6! HI, I am trying to migrate from windows to linux. For that i am integrating existing windows 2003 R2 64 BIT standard edition running ADS with Redhat Directory Server 8.0 runnning on CENTOS5 for user/group and password sync.I followed the step given in centos wiki and i sucessfully synced the users but password sync is not happening.In passync log its telling* "unable to load password entries from file" Since i am using 64 bit windows edition but rhds8.0 is running on 32 bit edition.May be the passSync.msi comes along with 32bit edition works only with 32 bit windows or if any 64 bit version of PassSync.msi is available.Plz help me this is very urgent for me. issue with acl's

I have a folder on a samba share that has the following permissions: [root@server]# getfacl TechnicalReports/ # file: TechnicalReports # owner: root # group: projectteam user::rwx user:dnk:rwx group::rwx mask::rwx other::--- default:user::rwx default:user:dnk:rwx default:group::rwx default:mask::rwx default:other::--- now the user dnk is not a member of the "projectteam" group. And for some reason the dnk user is denied access to this folder even though through setfacl the id was given full access to the folder. Ethernet poor performance

I am attempting to build an IPv4/IPv6 router. I have put a 2nd ethernet card in a box. I have one Ethernet card attached to my network and the other to a switch with nothing else there just so the link comes up for testing. When I have the built-in Ethernet attached to my network, I get pings around 60ms. The other card, btw, does not have any IP addresses configed. When I switch the cards around, the addon card attached to my network, I get pings that alternate with one being ~1488ms and the next 488ms! This is regular. This is the 2nd card I have tried. The 1st one was getting ping times of 1900ms/900ms. I have played around with the IRQ for the 2nd card. The 1st card I tried I was limited to 9,10, or 11. The card I am using now allows 3, 4, or 7 (btw, I have disabled serial and parallel ports). Any Idea where I should look to fix this?

Want to _prevent_ upgrade to centos 5.2

Hi, With the release of 5.2 "yum update" seems to be upgrading our computers from CentOS 5.1 to CentOS 5.2. I note from release notes for 5.2 that you are only supposed to get 5.2 if you type in "yum upgrade". On two seperate machines entering "yum update" has resulted in yum geting repo information for packages with versions that only exist in the base repository of centos 5.2. The following snippet shows the beginning of yum update on a x86_64 server. It has noticed python-2.4.3-21.el5.x86_64, ltrace-0.5-7.45svn.el5.x86_64 and system-config-securitylevel-tui.x86_64 0:1.6.29.1-2.1.el5 which are a CentOs 5.2 package. On a workstation yum update resulted in upgrade of firefox from 1.5 to 3.0-0 beta5. Can I stop this from happening? Ideally I would like to stay on a particulare version of CentOS eg 5.2 until we can do a controlled upgrade. Maybe we have the same problem as having stable specified in a debian sources.list where what is meant by stable changes when a new version of debian is released. how to create an mpeg4 mimetype (OT)

Hi All, I think this may be off topic, but since it's through centos 5.2, I'm not sure. Here is what I would like to do: I have created a web page for family to log into and view clips of my new niece. My camera saves these clips in mpeg4 format. What I would like to do is have the web clients click on the link and have either the clip pop up a save dialog or even better, start playing the clip. Right now if the link is clicked it starts downloading right away but the file looks like gibberish. I guess what I am seeing is the raw code. I think it's a mimetype thing but I'm not sure and if it is, how would I create the mimetype entry to do what I would like? Thanks in advance for any and all information received. Phil

Hello list. I'm trying to rebuild the 2.6.9.67.0.20.EL kernel, but it fails even without modifications. How did I try it? The CentOS4.6 kernel doesn't have the divider option available in CentOS5.2 This prevent timing problems and high CPU load in VMware ESX.

xen save/restore causes cron to hang

i haven't found anything online to talk about this, so maybe i've got something odd going on here. i have my xen set up to save/restore on dom0 reboot. almost everything works fine, but cron on the guest os'es (everything is centos 5 x86_64) stop processing jobs. i'm guessing it is missing an alarm or something like that. anyone else see this?

Problem with nvidia-drv-x11 when upgrading to CentOS 5.2

Hi! I know that the nvidia-drv-x11-package is from RPMForge, but I thought I might mention it here. I have a machine with a NVidia-card and because of the ease of use I use the rpmforge-package for that. After upgrading the problem was that during rebooting as soon as the machine hit the RHGB (which implicitly uses that driver) the machine froze. I booted into the old kernel removed rhgb, rebooted. Now the machine froze when starting X. Same procedure: Old Kernel. Remove nvidia-drv-x11. Reboot into the new kernel and reinstall nvidia-drv-x11. After a reboot everything works as it used to. The cause of the problem could have been (sorry, I didn't do any thorough forensic) that the nvidia.ko that was used in the new kernel was a symbolic link from the "weak-updates"-directory into the old kernel "extra"-directory. Is it possible that this only works inside of kernels with the same x in CentOS 5.x ? For the other machines I am upgrading I plan to 1. deinstall nvidia-x11-drv 2. do a regular "yum upgrade" 3. reinstall nvidia-x11-drv after reboot Is there any better way to do it? extract MIME attachments from 700MB imap folder

Hi all, Issue: I've been tasked with extracting a bunch of MIME attachments (M$Word docs) from emails which have been stored in an imap folder in /home/<username>/mail/<imap foldername>. As the subject states, the imap folder is about 700MB. Googling suggested that munpack might do the trick, but as it is intended only for one message at a time, it outputs the first attachment found, then exits gracefully. Further searches seemed to talk about mimedump, so I yum installed perl-MIME-tools.noarch from rpmforge as mimedump this was needed, and includes mimedump. I've read the man page, but am wholly unclear as to: 1) will this do the trick for me 2) are there other known tools which might be recommended Thanks in advance, -Ray System runs CentOS 5.1, not updated since April, but it is not connected to the internet (I do bring it online to install packages as needed); I will do a complete upgrade before the end of this month.

Yesterdey, after updating to the latest kernel from CentOS 5.2, the zaptel dont detect my card. I had to downgrade the kernel. For that matter is China a different country from Russia, from Switzerland, even though they share the same land mass -- I need to put my 2c in here. I'm from New Zealand, we are a first world democratic country (the first in the worlds to give the vote to ALL adults I may mention). I have had the misfortune many of times of being unable to transact business because people from the US in their ignorance think, that New Zealand, isn't that part of Australia, which is right next to Asia, can't do business with those Asians, they will rip me off. Now sometimes people from the US have asked me why people in the other parts of the world get a bit annoyed at the "the only country that is free and true if the good old US of A" attitude, and well here you go as an example. Lets ban all of Africa because someone from Nigeria is a scammer. Africa is a pretty big place, and you know what, I've met many South Africans that are real nice (even employed a few). I've always been someone who defends America when people run it down, but it is a two way street, don't treat a whole country as criminals because you don’t know the difference between one side of a continent from another, its kind of insulting you know. And some day you might well need the rest of us, you never know.

EPIA-M board for Centos

Is there any problems using this board? I have a dead board in a Book-PC (board size 10.5"x6") so am looking for a new board. Actually I want 2 LAN ports. 'Router' boards with enough umph to run Centos are expensive. I can pick up a VIA epia-m with 512Mb memory for $70 including shipping, so this is rather attractive option. I do have a 100Mb low-height PCI board that I can use. Fitting the board and card into the Book-PC box will be a bit of DIY engineering, but other than maybe loosing the front USB ports (big deal in the case), looks manageable. thanks for any experience/advise.

Hi all, I am trying to block all IP addresses from Africa due to a high rate of fraudulent orders coming from them. I have some found some websites that can generate a range of IP addresses. However, you would have to enter the ranges by country. I can use those perhaps but that would mean I would have to get the ranges for each country one by one. Has anyone here a list of addresses from Africa already? It would definitely be a time saver for me. My firewall uses IP blocking by CIDR. Thanks, Matt -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Missing update announcements for C4 i386 / x86_64

Hi, the latest updates for perl, xorg-x11, net-snmp, openoffice.org for C4 were announced for the ia64 and s390(x) archs, but not for i386 and x86_64 altough they are available on the updates mirrors. Also, what is the policy for announcements of updates that occurred after the C5.2 release? I see them on the update mirrors. Configuring sendmail in a corporate environment

I have a stock CentOS 5 system as far as email (sendmail) is concerned that is on our corporate LAN. I am not trying to set up a mail server; I merely want our CentOS systems to be able to send out emails. This works as long as the recipient's domain is our local domain. All, I have a fresh CentOS 5.2 server that I am just starting to customize, it is very close to stock. This morning I ran yum update: ============================================================================= Installing: kernel-xen i686 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5 updates 15 M Updating: samba i386 3.0.28-1.el5_2.1 updates 16 M samba-client i386 3.0.28-1.el5_2.1 updates 4.9 M samba-common i386 3.0.28-1.el5_2.1 updates 8.7 M After rebooting, Samba would not start, running 'service smb start' simply hangs forever, nothing in the logs I could find and I could see from ps that smbd was never forking to release the start script. I discovered that if I boot using the previous kernel 2.6.18-92.1.1.el5xen all is well. I did try regressing samba by uninstalling and then installing disabling the updates repo to no avail, the older version (1.1) of Samba was installed when I tried booting the older kernel, which did work, as well as the updated version (1.6). Hello all, lately i am facing problems with Certification Authorities. I have used centos script /etc/pki/tls/misc/CA my own certificate authority. In next steps i am generating requests for certificates to services such as LDAP,NNRPD and lately signing requests with CA. My approach is to import my own CA into Windows Vista OS as root CA and trusted, to avoid messages in clients such as "certificate could not be verified, certificate is not signed or cerficate authority cannot be verified". Hello, I'm setting up a reverse proxy in Apache (httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3) I have some pages being served which contain hard-coded names of machines behind the proxy, which obviously do not resolve on the client side. I found an Apache config item called ProxyHTMLURLMap* which supposedly will allow me to re-write these hostnames, but can't seem to find the apache module to install Starting httpd: 'ProxyHTMLURLMap', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration Anyone know what the name of that rpm/module is for Centos 5? Lost mail

I did an update yesterday evening, and didn't spot that it had changed permissions on my .procmailrc. Consequently no mail came in after that. I've been out most of today, so just got it fixed, but what will have happened to the mail for the missing period? Maillog just shows that messages have been passed to procmail. Procmail won't run if the perms are wrong, so where do the messages go? Anne

When I install xf86-video-intel-2.3.2, Package requirements were not met. And " yum list | grep xorg-server " can not find such package. Where can I get these packages (xorg-server xproto fontsproto)? Thanks in advance. nfs cannot see mount points on other machine

I'm having a bit of a problem with what I can "see" over nfs. I have two machines that nfs their root to each other and it seems to work. However, I now found out that some of the root directories that are listed are "fake" ones. A comparison of the root on both machines shows that some directories are the same and I can access those files on the other machine. However, there are some directories that are different. That is true for all the "special" directories like dev, proc, sys (which makes some sense), but also for directories that are mount points on the other machine. Does nfs not give me access to those mount points? Do I have to create a second nfs mount to that machine which mounts only that mount point? Or do I need some parameter to mount these mount points under the normal mount? What's weird is that if I create a file in these "fake" directories I can do that and it's listed like it actually were created on the other machine. But it gets created on *this* machine. When I then unmount, it's gone (like the whole nfs mount) and when I remount it's back. Where is it actually getting created and how can I remove it? Is there some nfs cache that holds it? Minimized Firefox is not visible on panel in CentOS 5.2

Hi, I opened a Firefox on Desktop, but when I clicked Minimize Window button, the Firefox disappeared and there was no icon on the panel, I simply could not find it any more (it did not close), this was the same for the terminal as well . How can I make the Firefox icon visible on panel (or workplaces) even it was minimized? Thank you. Jim

Pidgin problem on 5.2

Having a problem with Pidgin that may have come after the 5.2 upgrade. I don't use pidgin daily, but the last time I used it (a week or two ago) it was fine. Now, when clicking the icon nothing visible happens. When I open an xterm and run it from there I get this: $ pidgin libnm_glib_nm_state_cb: dbus returned an error. (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files and the terminal does not return to a prompt. there is no visible window for Pidgin, but parts of it may be running, as I heard the sound that (I think) means "buddy comes online". running "ps ax | grep -y pidgin" returns one process, so it's not entirely kaput. Anyone else seem this, or anyone have suggestions? Oh, also, I've recently enabled "desktop effects". In my /var/log/maillog show this message: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(apache): can not chdir(/var/spool/clientmqueue/): Permission denied Permissions on dir: drwxrwx--- 2 smmsp smmsp 36864 Jun 30 15:23 clientmqueue If i change the permissions to 777 works normaly but is not safe and in other server works fine with the permissions 770. I tested 2 disks in a mirror RAID volume. The upgrade to 5.2 creates /etc/pam.d/system-auth.rpmnew. I see that /etc/pam.d/system-auth actually is a symlink to system-auth-ac. Is it recommended to replace that symlink with the rpmnew file? xorg and backlight

Hi all, I have found one problem after upgrading to CentOS 5.2 x86 on my HP Compaq nx7010 laptop. When I close and open lid, backlight is not turned on again. I can see my desktop, but the only thing I can do is press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to restart X11. Then the backlight is restored. xorg.conf is generic, created by installation process. I use ATI proprietary driver 8.28.08 (the last which support Mobility Radeon 9200). I would appreciate any hint or help. spam filtering with centos 5.2

In the past I've used a combination of spamhaus combined RBL's and Spamassassin with Mailscanner as my spam recipe, but this stopped working very well for me well over a year ago. As many of the users of the couple small/personal mail servers I run are NOT technical people, and use POP to read their mail, 'training' spamassassin is difficult at best. Once upon a time, using the Rules Du Jour scripts from the SARES project worked pretty well, but that has been shut down, and really hasn't been functional in over a year. I've just rebuilt a friends mail server with centos 5.2 (it was running FC3 or something before) and would like to setup them up with a decent anti-spam recipe that doesn't require extensive tinkering or training. does anyone have a good recipe for this? Ideally I'd like something purely RPM based that doesn't require extensive configuration and tuning. I've never setup razor before, how well does that work if the mail users aren't in a position to feed it training data?

Clamd not working

Earlier this month I reported a problem in that ClamTK couldn't virus-scan a file. This was cured by following the dev's instructions <quote> If you open up a terminal window and type "ls /var/clamav" (without quotes of course), I'm betting you'll see a variety of files and/or directories in there. If you're up for it, as root type rm /var/clamav/* -rf which will remove all the signatures. Don't worry, you'll get them back in the next step. As root, type freshclam -v And that will download all the necessary signatures again. </quote> At that point I thought all was well - until I had to reboot, when I found that it hung with a message (from memory) 'self-checking 1800'. Using Interactive boot I discovered that it came from clamd. I'm guessing that daily.cld main.cld and mirrors.dat are being sought somewhere other than /var/clamav. Maybe a symlink is required? If someone with a working clamd could advise me I'd be most grateful. For now I have had to chkconfig clamd off. Anne

How/when to file bugs on upstream bugzilla?

I've hit a bug since upgrading from 5.1 to 5.2 that involves the screen blanking when I shut the lid on a Dell Latitude D820 notebook. It doesn't come back on correctly when I open the lid, and instead crashes X. I've filed a bug on bugs.centos.org that describes the problem (#2910), and was requested to file a bug on bugzilla.redhat.com. I've filed bugs on Red Hat's system before, but always after reproducing the problem using genuine RHEL. In this case, I can't practically reload my notebook with RHEL 5.2, so I'm wondering how to report this bug to Red Hat. I'm afraid of it getting rejected outright since it's not RHEL, but on the other hand I could see where the collected information could be useful to them if the bug report is written well... Any advice on this? I didn't see anything on the CentOS wiki or FAQ as to how or when to use upstream's bug system. thanks! Greg

I try to compile my gtk2 application using GNU autotools and found the following error: ... grep: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la: No such file or directory /bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la: No such file or directory libtool: link: `/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la' is not a valid libtool archive ... I check both gtk2-devel-2.10.4-20.el5 & gtk-2.10.4-20.el5, the /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la is missing. Is this a CentOS 5.2 bug of packaging ? MPEG video under Fedora 9

Could some kind soul state as briefly and clearly as possible what is required to play a .mpg video file under Fedora 9/KDE/Firefox? On my laptop I see from System Settings=>Advanced=>File Associations that I am given a choice for mpeg video files of GXine Video Player Gnome MPlayer MPlayer Movie Player Kaffeine As a sample .mpg file I've taken /usr/share/apps/k3b/extra/k3bphotosvcd.mpg . [Maybe that is a bad example; if so could some guru suggest a better one? One incidental difficulty in solving multimedia problems under Fedora is that supposed solutions rarely give a sample file on which the solution can be tested. Perhaps a selection of multimedia files for testing would be useful. Is there such a thing anywhere?] I'm not clear also if Firefox has its own, different, set of File Associations? Or will it read those set by Fedora/KDE? I understand that the Fedora developers have a religious objection to telling us how to play ungodly video files, or even telling us where we can get this information. But it would be nice if a standard godless informant could be agreed on ...

Why standard Centos 5.2 kernel does not have a module "pata_via." I have an old motherboard and IDE drive. The standard kernel does not work. Kernel include a module "pata_via" only in centosplus. It is a bug?

chkconfig update fails

My update to 5.2 fails on one machine because of this error: Transaction Check Error: file /etc/init.d from install of chkconfig-1.3.30.1-2 conflicts with file from package AcronisAgentLinux-9.5.8076-1 file /etc/init.d from install of chkconfig-1.3.30.1-2 conflicts with file from package TrueImageAgent-9.5.8076-1 Obviously, both packages created (completely unnecessarily) the /etc/init.d symlink. I'm going to report this to them, but what's the best course of action to continue now? There doesn't seem to be a "force" option for yum? Install that single file via rpm with force? I want to access Gnome Desktoup through XDMCP protocol, but unfortunately X server will not start when there is no graphical output where to start. How can i solve this problem? Automatic site selection for dowload

I would like to ask that more flexibility be built into automatically choosing sites for downloading. I have just upgraded to CentOS 5.2. When I look for a mirror, I get many choices from Taiwan. Since I am in Hong Kong this makes sense geographically but .... not in terms of bandwidth. Although Taiwan is very close, it is almost the slowest connection I can make. Some .jp sites are good but I find .sg or the US is usually best. This morning I tried to update to the new kernel (92.1.6). My system seemed to die during the download. After some investigation, I found that Yum et al is being defaulted to .tw sites. (base, updates, add ons all go to .tw.) I have now been sitting at base primary.xml.gz for over 15 minutes and am only about 50% done. Is it possible when deciding these default sites to look at actual bandwidth and not just geographical closeness? Mel

I noticed I have an "/etc/passwd.rpmnew" file which changes the password of many service accounts from "x" to "*". I got a new USB ethernet adapter from ebay, the ad said RealTek chipset, so I thought I would chance it. Well, my 5.2 system does not recognize the USB device. At all. What do I need to do? Hi, I am trying to integrate RHDS 8.0 with windows 2003 ads on centos 5.1 as per the centos documentation for user/group and password sync from windows ADS. I am using windows sync and Passsync . But i am facing problem with the certificate creation. *########################################################################## Followed the below step in centos box runing rhds to setup ssl.* ########################################################################### - vi pin.txt secretpw - Create a noise file for the encryption vi noise.txt dsadasdasdasdadasdasdasdasdsadfwerwerjfdksdjfksdlfhjsdk - Create the key and certificate databases database certutil -N -d . -f pin.txt (results, makes 3 files with db extension) - Generate the encryption key certutil -G -d . -z noise.txt -f pin.txt - Generate the self-signed CA certificate certutil -S -n "CA Certificate" -s "cn=CAcert" -x -t "CT,," -m 1000 -v 9999 -d . -z noise.txt -f pin.txt (generates CA certificate and puts into db stores, can be verified with: certutil –L –d . –n "Certificate Name", where Certificate Name is CA Certificate) - Generate the Directory Server Client Certificate certutil -S -n "server-cert" -s "cn=FQDN,cn=Directory Server" -c "CA Certificate" -t "u,u,u" -m 1001 -v 9999 -d . -z noise.txt -f pin.txt - Convert to pkcs12 format (note these files will be used within the AD system, and the prompted password for the commands below will need to match password in pin.txt file) pk12util -d . -o cacert.pk12 -n "CA Certificate" pk12util -d . -o dscert.pk12 -n "server-cert" ############################################################################################################################### *After that when i executed ldapsearch -x -ZZ it showing all the entries properly on rhds centos box, so its indicates ssl was perfectly configured on RHDS* ################################################################################################################################## *STEPS FOLLOWED ON WINDOWS 2003 ADS BOX to **Set up SSL on the Active Directory Server* * * - Install a certificate authority in the Windows Components section in Add/Remove Programs . - Select the Enterprise Root CA option. - Make sure to use the hostname as the DN serverX and then for the domain dc=example,dc=com (note, this should resemble your FQDN) - Reboot Windows Machine - Log back in to the box...give it a little while, it's windows :-) - Got to Start>>Run>>mmc - Under File>>Add/Remove Snap-in - Click Add, Click Certificates, Click Add, Click Computer Account, Click Next and finish - Go to Trusted Root Certificates>>Certificates>>Right Click>>All Tasks>>Import - Go to where you copied the pk12 files from earlier and import the cacert.pk12 [CREATED IN RHDS RUNNING ON CENTOS ] *Create DB Stores For PassSync in windows 2003 ads server* - Copy .pk12 files that were put on Windows system to C:\Program Files\Red Hat Directory Password Synchronization\ - In this directory run certutil -d . -N (from dos command) - This creates empty db stores, next run the following to import your dscert.pk12 into the key store pk12util -d . -i dscert.pk12 - Then give trusted peer status to the server certutil -d . -M -n server-cert -t "P,P,P" *ERROR When i executed the above command on windows 2003 ads box it giving me following error certutil.exe unable to decode trust strings error 0 Also the certificate created from centos box using certutil is showing validation date and expiration date as current date and time in both CA Cert and Server-cert i checked the certificate content by using certutil –L –d . –n "Certificate Name" certutil –L –d . –n "Server-cert" Plz help me how to troubleshoot this error. VNC vs GNOME desktop

I'm trying to use VNC to connect my home Centos box (up to date centos 5) to my Centos 4 (also up to date) at work. I have no problem connecting. The problem occurs after logging in, for every applet in the bottom Gnome panel I get an error box from which I can choose to remove the applet from the panel, or just go on. I choose to not delete but to just go on. After I get a half dozen or so of those, the desktop is fully drawn, except the bottom panel is completely empty. no desktop switcher, or anything else. I've googled and looked in centos forums and realvnc FAQs and don't find any reference to such a problem. Clues would be appreciated! Here's the text from that dialog: The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_howDesktopApplet". backup with dd

hi all, i have a centos box and would like to back up just in case the hard drive fail. one way to do this is duplicate the image of the hard drive, so if the hard drive fail, just remove it and put mirrored hard drive and done. here my system info: uname -a Linux jadenet.jadesterling.com 2.6.9-22.0.2.EL #1 Tue Jan 17 06:51:40 CST 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 37G 15G 20G 43% / /dev/hda1 99M 8.9M 85M 10% /boot none 188M 0 188M 0% /dev/shm i'm looking into dd, but is there anything better than dd? by the way, i would like to use external hard drive via usb to do mirror image. this is an internal box and very little info/actvities going on in this box. so, i don't have to worry about backup everyday. i may want to backup once a month. thanks, T.
