Dear All, I am curently running a CENTOS server with the following setup CentOS release 5 (Final) Kernel 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen on an i686 bind-9.3.3-10.el5 sendmail-8.13.8-2.el5 apache httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3 MailScanner ver 4.66.5 ClamAV 0.92 SpamAssassin version 3.2.4 SquirrelMail ver 1.4.13 Now all this have been workin perfectly fine for a long time. now if i do a yum upgrade i see the following Install 29 Package(s) Update 415 Package(s) Remove 0 Package(s) and the total download size is abt 579 M i jus wanted to know if i could SAFELY apply the updates since its a live server running our companys primary DNS and mail server has any body done this b4 i know the Centos will be upgraded to 5.2 but has anybody applied these updates and its been workin fine after reboot and also about the various software currently running on the server apprecite your help and asvise regards Fabian -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

How to enable SHA1 passwords after migration from OpenSUSE?

Hi there! I have recently migrated my old server from OpenSUSE 10.0 to CentOS 5. Almost everything works great, except for one thing - user passwords. In the old system they were in a form: root:$2a$05$9V.P3/KV2fd0r/O8hs0gNueaidF35edj3DL6skb32qZJNpvwVHiUO:12183:0:99999:7::: and that format doesn't seem to be understood by CentOS. When I change the password I get something like: root:$1$Z0HGYkIb$fbkW0gR6c.k7rENE1NlzE0:14055:0:99999:7::: Note the encrypted password begins with $2a$... in OpenSUSE while in CentOS it starts with $1$... CentOS passwords (MD5?) are understood by OpenSUSE but OpenSUSE passwords (SHA1?) are not understood by CentOS. Is there any way around that? Perhaps get some PAM module from OpenSUSE? Or just some setting somewhere? Having to reset passwords for all my users would be a royal pain. Thanks! PaPa

Headphone on a Acer Extensa 5220

Hello, is there any chance to get a headphone working under a acer extensa 5220 with CenOS 5.2 (2.6.18-92.1.6.el5) installed? Maybe by centosplus or self compiled alsa sources? # rpm -qa | grep alsa alsa-lib-1.0.14-1.rc4.el5 alsa-utils-1.0.14-3.rc4.el5 The sound works great on this notebook and the hardware is detected as 'Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller snd-hda-intel'. But the only settings alsamixer shows are 'Master' and 'PCM', nothing about Headphone or Microphone. Microphone is not so important, but a working headphone on the notebook would be great. Hmmm, I seemed to have created a misalignmnet somewhere along the line. I can't remember doing anything to this. But at one time I did try to test the java open source. Posted my results to the list, got no response, abandoned all hope and went on my merry way. I don't know if this is related. I have installed an rpm for a java needed by an application I run. It was from the official java site. I don't know if this is related. Here's what I know. Well, I think I know this. /usr/bin/rebuild-security-providers seems to be missing from jpackage-utils.noarch. Starting a Local CentOS Mirror

Hi all, I would like to set up a local CentOS mirror, as suggested by others on this list, to cut down on bandwidth usage, etc. I have read a couple HowTos and it seems pretty straight-forward, but I do have some questions. 1) How should I change my entries in /etc/yum.repos.d? Specifically, should I replace CentOS-Base.repo with my own .repo file? 2) Is there a way to configure yum to prefer the local repo, but use an external mirror if the local is not available? 3) What is the best practice around keeping the local repo updated? A once-a-day cron job to rsync from an external mirror? If this is the correct approach, is there a way to rsync from a "mirror list" so that updates won't fail if a particular mirror happens to be unavailable when the cron job runs? Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide. I want to be sure I get this right!

Wheel and YUM!!

Dear All I am trying to allow a local user on the centos machine to be able to run yum What I have done is added him to the wheel group so that he can run software, basically it's his own machine if he breaks it it's his problem But even after adding him to wheel, sys and adm group he is unable to install using yum I am sure I must be missing something or I must be doing something wrong, Many Thanks Harry

I normally use http install to access my /centos/ver/os/i386 repo. Is there someway to get the install to include the updates in /centos/ver/updates? It seems such a waste to install rpms that you know are already fixed....

Centos 5.2 kickstart install from USB Pen failed

For a first install, I boot the machine on the CentOS first CD, I type "linux ks" at the prompt and the rest is automatic. I have already use USB pen to boot some servers that don't have CD-ROM drive and all went well with the diskboot.img of CentOS 5.1. But the diskboot.img of CentOS 5.2 seems to be unable to deal with the kickstart parameters passed by DHCP. The embedded DHCP client does not get the "filename" option value and seems to have problems with the DNS server (even if the "next-server" is correctly resolved). The installer fails at the moment of getting the kickstart file and asks me to enter a alternate location. There is a warning about the DNS server on the console, and it shows that the "filename" is set to "(null)". All went well with the 5.1 diskboot.img, with the same hardware, same DHCP configuration, and the same kickstart configuration (but with a 5.1 install tree). Anyone having the same problem ? Did I miss something ? When I execute "yum upgrade" on both CentOS 5.0 Xen DomU and CentTOS 5.1 Xen Dom0 I get: --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: drbd >= 8.0.12 is needed by package kmod-drbd-xen "yum list drbd\*" gives: Available Packages drbd.x86_64 8.0.12-1.el5.centos extras drbd82.x86_64 8.2.6-1.el5.centos extras I searched for any mention ot drbd in my yum configuration (in case it was excluded) but didn't find anything. Centos 5.2 and Xen, problems installing guests

Hello, I have installed a new server with centos 5.2 x86_64, when i try to install a guest using the gui tool virt-manager the "new" button is disabled, so no good luck. Using virt-install on the command line, the install process begins but after retrieving the .treeinfo vmlinuz and initrd.img files, it stop with the following error: virDomainCreateLinux() failed POST operation failed: (xend.err 'Error creating domain: invalid xend config dom0-min-mem: expected int: |18') is someone having the same problem? do someone knows a workaround?. Workplaces / Desktop on panel

Hi, I've just installed CentOS 5.2, but could not find a workplaces (which I can switch between them) icon in the panel. I am running in GNOME (it was desktops in KDE). I've looked at References and Administration, but could not find the workplaces to add to the panel. Where can I find it and how can I add it to the panel? Thank you. Jim

Kernel panic from install CD

I have a bunch of DecTOPs. Use the AMD Geode chip. Yesterday I upgraded one of them, and got the dreaded Kernel panic. Something about powernowk8. I could boot up with the old kernel, though. I know I have to put in a bug report on this, will do shortly, but first wanted to try a fresh install on another DecTOP. At the prompt, I specified: linux askmethod After it loaded the kernel, it died with the same Kernel panic. This is bad. Very bad. If they fix the kernel (when, please?), I will need to make a new install CD (how?). Yes, I can put the drive in another system, do the install, move the drive, then run system-config-display, but I was hoping that 5.2 fixed the install problems i was having on these DecTOPs with 5.1....

Centos 5.2 Install - lvcreate failed for ...

!st install of 5.2; system requires custom partitioning (Scalix mail server). Boot and Swap are hard partitions, rest of drive is LVM. In LVM, three ext3 partitions: /, /home, /var/opt/scalix lvcreate failed for the last (named Scalix_02). It was the last of the three partitions and used up the remainder of the LVM space. Now 'The Installer will now exit..." And all there is is a Reboot button. Any idea on what the real error is, how to find out more, what to try next? It did take me a bit to walk through the packet selection. Next I will try to build a more normal system :)

5.2 upgrade mostly good (so far)

Hi Guys! Thanks to the whole Centos team for all their hard work. You have no IDEA how much I appreciate it! I ran "yum upgrade" last night, rebooted this morning and encountered a couple of small problems: 1. "shutdown -h now" goes all the way down but does not power down the box like it always has before. Same when shutting down via the GUI shutdown dialog. I can offer up machine details should anyone want them. 2. we have ORACLE 10.2.0.4 with CENTOS 4.4 on DELL server. Recently we are test "UTL_SMTP" on ORACLE PL?SQL program and tried to send MAIL to customers. The problem is this send MAIL program always one time work and second time not work (loop). I don't think problem come from ORACLE bug or any ORACLE relate problem. If I copy database and put on anyother server, it work correctly. updating to 5.2 from local repo

This is my first major version update after using a local repo. It seems that before I can "yum update" I have to fetch the complete new 5.2 base? Is this correct? When I run yum update it now fails with various strange dependency errors although all the updates are synced. When I change to using the original repo file it wants to download many many more and shows a lot of files that are in base and not in updates. CentOS 5.2 - GFS and glock_purge tunable

The documentation for 5.2 indicates the glock_purge tunable parameter is present for GFS in its example output from `gfs_tool gettune`. However, I just upgraded a 5.1 system to 5.2 and everything looks good except for the mysterious absence of the glock_purge parameter. Any ideas as to why this tunable which I was looking forward to getting is missing? - James Thompson

going from 4 to 6 serial ports

I am using 32bit base kernel and want to increase the number of serial ports from 4 to 6. The hardware is a touch screen epos system and it uses com ports 5 and 6 for dedicated devices. I think that I may need a customer kernel. Are there any instructions on how to do this or other ways of solving my problem? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Mike Kinton

CentOS roadmap/EPEL

There are lots of exciting things happening in the CentOS ecosystem at the moment, by which I mean "upstream" or "across stream" in Fedora and RHEL. I'm thinking of projects that equip RH-like EL in general for serious entry into the enterprise, things like the Fedora Directory Server, and RedHat's Emerging Technologies projects such as Cobbler, FreeIPA and Ovirt. Also JBoss middleware. Will these sort of packages end up in CentOS eventually, or are there any major problems installing EPEL packages on CentOS? I know CentOS is very popular in the web hosting world, but enterprise grade directory servers, provisioning servers and virtualisation technologies could also see greater take up of CentOS in areas like local government and education for example (medium sized but slightly cash-challenged organisations). I suppose this is some kind of roadmap question, or a question about using EPEL packages on CentOS. Personally, I'm interested in using these "emerging technologies" in the local government environment.

Lots of Centos 5.2 updates already

I just completed my first 5.2 install. For 'completeness' I 'tested out' yum update. Guess what? For this minimum install, there were 43Mb of updates to download. So I went over to my local repo server and setup a /centos/5.2/updates directory and started the rsync to get all the updates: 155 files taking up 943Mb. Already. Wow! Perhaps something to do with the initial build problem? But anyone that does an install from the CDs/DVD and includes OpenOffice, then turns around and updates, is in for a scary supprise. Yet another reason for the local repos....

To upgrade or not

My laptop is a Thinkpad T20 running CentOS 5.1 The reason it is running CentOS at all is because Fedora Core 6 was workable on it, but Fedora 8 was a complete dog. Anyway - with all the new desktop stuff in CentOS 5.2 I'm wondering if I would be happier just leaving it at 5.1 rather than letting it update to 5.2. Will 5.1 continue to get security fixes if I leave it at 5.1 or do I need to update to 5.2 to get the patches? I'm planning to replace it at some point, just haven't seen T40s on eBay drop to my price range yet.

Changing the symbolic link for /Centos/5

I do not know the command line for symbolic links. I created the symbolic link of /Centos/5 to /Centos/5.1 in Nautilus which does not have a method of changing a symbolic link. Only deleting it and creating a new one. Is there a command line to change /Centos/5 to link to /Centos/5.2 ? IMNSHO, anyone that has more than 2 Centos boxes should maintain their own local repo. Of course it only took me a few years until I got mine up and running! Just had some challenges walking the talk :)

Wrong samba version in C5.2 updates?

Hi, the latest upstream version of samba rpms for 5.2 is samba-3.0.28-1.el5_2.1. In the Centos 5.2 updates tree there is only samba-3.0.28-0.el5.8 which also is already part of the 5.2 os tree. Could it be that the updates tree just carries the wrong rpms? Best regards, Bernd

Humm. I was expecting the newer 5.2 kernel to have an updated 3ware driver but modinfo indicates that this hasn't changed. It still shows as 2.26.02.008 vs the CentOS 4.6 kernel having 2.26.05.007. Maybe they updated the driver but not the version number? Does the 3ware driver 2.26.02.008 work well enough with the 9650 or are we still expected to go get an updated driver from 3ware right after doing an install? Thanks everyone. -- -Tim

Broken upgrade to 5.2

Hello all, I was upgrading a CentOS 5.1 box to 5.2 remotely, and I lost my ssh connection to the server. Now when I rerun the "yum upgrade" it fails due to conflicts in the transaction check stage. Before I dig myself a deeper hole, I think I need advice. The original error I received was a conflict between python-devel and python, so I erased python-devel with the plan to install it again after, but now I'm getting more errors and I think I might be up to my neck and I've got that cold feeling on the back of my neck :-( I have the CentOS-Base repo enabled (base, updates, addons, extras & centosplus) and CentOS-Media --- but no others. Hello, all, Since Fedora Core 4 I've not been able to just install everything. I would love to just be able to install all available packages for my architecture. What's the way to do this? No plugin-directory for firefox in CentOS 5.2

I noticed, that the directory /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b5/plugins/ is NOT created on CentOS 5.2. Therefor for instance the flash-plugin is not installed for the new firefox (After manually creating the directory and setting the right symlink it works all right)

A couple of security questions

Hello, I'd like to ask a couple of things: 1) I would like to move from Debian to CentOS. One thing I will probably miss is the debsecan tool. This utility sends me a mail whenever there is a change regarding the vulnerabilities' status on my system. It lists new ones, resolved ones and current ones. Is there anything similar for CentOS? 2) I read that RHEL packages are compiled with various security technologies including Exec Shield, FORTIFY_SOURCE and fstack-protector. Desktop: After yum update and power off, cannot boot new Kernel

Yesterday, in the afternoon, I did "yum update" on my Desktop. Everything seemed AOK. After power down last night, when I powered on this morning, it began to boot the new Kernel and then seemed to die. Instead of getting the progress of the boot on the CRT, the screen was blank and nothing happening. I am now running off the previous Kernel on this box. Is there a fix for this, so I can use the new Kernel? This morning, I did "yum upgrade" on my daughter's box and that is finishing now. If I have the same problem on that box, I will follow on in this thread. TIA, Lanny

truly minimal install

Hello, we want to distribute our company software as virtual appliances (VMWARE) on Centos5 . My question is, which way i will achieve really minimum install (with yum). So far, i have during install unchecked all packages , then customized groups and removed everything including base system. As a result my CentOS install was 800MB , which is still to much for us. Value around 300 - 400 MB is OK. Thanks! D.

Problem with Full install of 5.2, missing rpm

Hi, I did a standard i386 install of 5.2 on a test machine. Then I ran the following command yum install \* and got the following error. Error: Missing Dependency: pilot-link-devel >= 0.11.8 is needed by package gnome-pilot-devel Checking my local repo and my usual upstream mirrors for pilot-link-devel it's not there. [root@thomond CentOS]# locate pilot-link-devel | grep centos /mirrors/centos/5.1/os/i386/CentOS/pilot-link-devel-0.11.8-16.i386.rpm /mirrors/centos/5.1/os/x86_64/CentOS/pilot-link-devel-0.11.8-16.i386.rpm /mirrors/centos/5.1/os/x86_64/CentOS/pilot-link-devel-0.11.8-16.x86_64.rpm /mirrors/centos/5.2/os/x86_64/CentOS/pilot-link-devel-0.11.8-16.i386.rpm /mirrors/centos/5.2/os/x86_64/CentOS/pilot-link-devel-0.11.8-16.x86_64.rpm As you can see from the above pilot-link-devel is present in both i386 and x86_64 repos for 5.1 but only in the x86_64 repo for 5.2 It's not really a problem I can just leave out gnome-pilot-devel. Hi list, Since the upgrade to 5.2, when I log into my server with a ldap account I have these 2 errors messages: -bash: [: =: unary operator expected -bash: [: -le: unary operator expected After investigation, the trouble come from two scripts in /etc/profile.d: /etc/profile.d/krb5-workstation.sh /etc/profile.d/vim.sh The problem is with the test where the command "id" is involved, like: if [ `/usr/bin/id -u` = 0 ] ; If I add double quotes ("`/usr/bin/id -u`"), it will work again. Indeed, as a connected ldap user, the id command returns nothing when quoted: [ldapUser@server ~]$ /usr/bin/id -u 12345 [ldapUser@server ~]$ `/usr/bin/id -u` [ldapUser@server ~]$ As a normal user, the command behaves normally: [user@server ~]$ `/usr/bin/id -u` -bash: 1302: command not found [user@server ~]$ /usr/bin/id -u 1302 I have modified theses two scripts but I am afraid it will break something in the future. udevd can't reach LDAP-server during boot

Hi! I'm using CentOS 5.1 (x86_64) machines which authenticate using LDAP. At the start of booting I get messages like this: udevd[1158]: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldaps://ldap.server.example.com/: Can't contact LDAP server udevd[1158]: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server... udevd[1158]: nss_ldap: could not connect to any LDAP server as (null) - Can't contact LDAP server udevd[1158]: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldaps://ldap.server.example.com/: Can't contact LDAP server udevd[1158]: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 1 seconds)... This escaletes to 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 seconds. After that (==timeouting for 2 minutes) booting continues without problem, so this is not really a showstopper, but inconvenient. Googling around revealed some fixes for Debian/Ubuntu. The bottom line i that udevd needs some user/group that is not in the local files but on the LDAP-server. The fix usually was adding this user (nvram, scanner ...) or group locally. The problem is, that on these systems after the last attempt something like udevd[1158]: lookup_group: error resolving group 'rdma': Illegal seek is printed out, makeing it easy to find the right group/user. Is there a way to get CentOS to a similar behaviour, making it easier to find the culprit? Bernhard

Problem with evolution while upgrading to CentOS 5.2

When trying to prepare a workstation with (so that the real "yum upgrade" doesn't have to download the packages) yum upgrade --upgradeonly it fails with these messages: Error: Missing Dependency: libegroupwise-1.2.so.12 is needed by package evolution Error: Missing Dependency: libgtkhtml-3.8.so.15 is needed by package evolution Error: Missing Dependency: libexchange-storage-1.2.so.2 is needed by package evolution Error: Missing Dependency: libexchange-storage-1.2.so.2()(64bit) is needed by package evolution Error: Missing Dependency: libegroupwise-1.2.so.12()(64bit) is needed by package evolution On the test-machine I solved this by deinstalling evolution (I don't use it anyway), but this is not an option for the other machines Could anyone give me a hint what is wrong? Suggestions for a plug and play CA certificate manager?

I have played with self-signed end-use PKI certificates for about a decade now and would really like to set up a proper, albeit private, PKI using some sort of OFS CA management software. I have looked at OpenCA and found a few packages on sourceforge but they all seem to fall short of my desires in one form or another (rpm install, multiple subordinate CAs, certificate revocation and extension management, web-based or linux/microsoft GUI) . I have even tried to use the scripts that come with OpenSSL with very limited success. What I would like to do is to set up a self-signed root CA certificate, then use that to issue one or more signing CA's, each possibly limited as to what type of certificate that they can sign. rsh issue/update (access denied)...

problem with telnet

Dear All i have a centos 5 server running as a backup PC server and is working perfect for abt 3 months jus a couple of days back when i tried to telnet to the server it gave me connection refused i go to the server and when i say telnet localhost it says getaddrinfo: localhost Name or service not known the /etc/hosts file has the loopback entry and the actuall ip address of the server firewall is disabled selinux disbled no /etc/hosts.allow or /etc/hosts.deny telnet is enabled in /etc/xident.d/telnet file now when i do a nmap on this sserver i dont see the telnet service open but i hav another 3 centos 5 servers n when i do a nmap on these there is telnet open also services file has telnet no errors in /var/log/secure or /var/log/messages i also removed telnet server n resinstalled it but the same wondering whts wrong apprecite your help -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

CentOS 5 based distribution

I've been trying to create a Linux distribution based on CentOS 5, similar to (actually, exactly like) how CentOS is based on RHEL. I have been unable to find any information about this. Most of what I find are tutorials and instructions on using Kickstart. Sometimes I've found allusions to doing this, but nothing that gives all the instructions necessary to modify Anaconda (or other files) sufficiently. I have found an excellent walkthrough ( http://wings.buffalo.edu/computing/ublinux/) on creating a distribution based on RHEL 4. While following the instructions I have found that not everything is in exactly the same place when using CentOS 5, but the descriptions are close enough that I have been able to figure it out and create a mostly "rebranded" install DVD. One thing that the above walkthrough does not explain is how to change all the text and images (it points to most of the images) and the default "packages". By that I mean the screen where the installer asks what additional tasks I would like the system to include support for: i.e. Desktop - Gnome, Server, Server - GUI, etc... I have been unable to find where this information, and some of the other text the installer uses (for example, "Searching for CentOS installations"), is stored. I've greped the entire DVD (including the expanded stage2.img file), but cannot find this text anywhere. Is the information stored in a compiled executable? If so, which executable will I need to recompile? Thanks.

centos 5.2 for real this time

I did a yum update last night at about 23h15 EDT (-4). No upgrade. I just did a yum update this morning at about 08h45 (-4). for my system there's about 348 megs of updates. Now all I have to do is figure out how to remove OO.o 2.0.whatever which is being upgraded to 2.3.whatever. I'm using 2.4.1 on my 4.6 boxes (have always been using the latest OO.o on them since installation a couple of years ago.) Any ideas on how to completely remove the OO.o references for Yum, after having tried to do rpm -Uvh *.rpm, after trying again and doing a yum cleanup, etc. etc.?

I have recently moved from Trac to Redmine for project management (and I strongly recommend that you consider this as an alternative to Trac, it is far more powerful to use and much easier to set up) but I had/have exactly the same problems that you are facing. The difficulty is that Trac has a DBMS backend, usually MySQl but in my case PostgreSQl. This complicates the issue since it is not enough to simply tar up the application site. What I ended up doing was building a hot site spare server to accommodate all of these types of applications (Trac project management, subversion repositories, drupal user cms sites, imapd user mailboxes, avantfax fax archives). Then, for applications that employed a database backend, I setup regular cron jobs to dump the backend databases into a ./dbdump directory that I added to the root of each site's file system. I added an rsync command to the end of the dump command to then move the entire site to the backup box at the end of the dump. On the backup machine I added a cron job to reload the database from the dump. This entails some background work to set up. You must initialize and configure the appropriate DBMS on the backup server with the requisite databases and database owners. You must ensure that the application's users and groups are properly replicated there. You may need to install and configure the application itself. You may need to configure apache if the application uses a web frontend, like Trac. You need to setup SSL host to host root authentication for rsync. And there are no doubt several other little things that need to be accommodated but that I no doubt have forgotten. SME on CentOS, telnet and MySQL

After failing to install on two different machines that were running Windows, I realized that one machine had a bad hard-drive, and the other bad memory. So I've collected the good parts into one machine and installed CentOS with SME. This was the fastest install of Linux I have every seen, 15 minutes done, configured, and running, web and email server. It is a very secure config, no GUI -- just a server. One problem: MySQL and Telnet can't be accessed remotely, ports not open, allow/deny files, something. I've searched the internet and hacked around for hours, can't get these services to work remotely. Anyone here have experience with the SME/e-smith admin tools? By default SME doesn't install Telnet on port 23, only ssh on port 22. So I ran a yum install for telnet, manually started it. I get a response from port 23, but connection refused. Mysql does come installed with SME, however local connections only. I can run mysql client on the command line on the SME.CentOS server, queries work fine, but not remotely. I am using Windows Vista as a client workstation, Programmer Studio (Whisper Technology) that requires a generic telnet server, and the freeware version of Toad to connect to the MySQL server. Upgrading my local repo to 5.2

This will be the first version change with my local repo so I want to check the steps out. I have a /Centos/5.1 directory with all the contents of the ISO CDs. I have a /Centos/5 directory with a symbolic link to the 5.1 directory. I ASSUME that I will create a /Centos/5.2 directory and drop the contents of the ISO images there. Then change the symbolic link to the 5.2 directory. After I test out both installs and upgrades from this new directory I can trash the old 5.1 directory. Do I have it right?

Why CentOS 5.2 is so large?

Hi, folks. I have download the DVD image of CentOS 5.2. Comparing with the DVD image of Upstream OS Provider, I got a surprise: The size of the DVD image of Upstream OS Provider is just 2.87 GB(i386), but the size of the DVD image of CentOS 5.2(i386) is so large that is 3.74 GB! I kown that CentOS's developers did very excellent work on how to make the Upstream OS more availability and add many good free software on the CentOS. But where can I got the change or add list of CentOS? and why the size change is so large? I think it is very useful for my farther employ of CentOS. Thanks! (Yes, I can read the ReleaseNotes, but it is still can not disabuse me, the secsion of "5.6. Packages added by CentOS that are not included upstream" is so little.)

backup question

Dear CentOs users, I have a centos server with nothing important at the moment, but I would like to install some web-based project management tool (trac for the curious) that would contain important data. And, as my network is growing the configuration of the server is becoming complex. I would like to have a proper backup so that I can restore the whole system easily, should any problem occur. What do you recommend? I'm not an expert on this, so my first idea is that I could do a per application backup and create a tar file of the /etc. The latter especially could be too naive. And, a push-the-button method that handles all in once, not depending on the app number would be much better. Another thing: how I could do this to be safe across a centos upgrade? - Gergely

Bonding question - active-backup

Hi I have bonding working and i can failover between active (eth0) and backup (eth1) without issue, however is there a way to automatically fail back to eth0 when this link once again becomes available? I understand this may be undesirable due to flapping etc but i just wonder if its possible. thanks

Network FS w/o user setup

Is there a file system + configuration that will let me share a directory, and anyone who has access to something in that directory on the server will also have access (and lack of access) to the same files from the client? Clients will be Centos5, Win2K, WinXP. Server is Centos5. To put it another way, all users have accounts on the server. I don't want to have to set up ANY user information on the server, other than what I set up to control local access. I just want to say "Share /vmware" and have it available, to the same users who can access it locally. With Samba I have to maintain duplicate user lists, password lists, and share access lists. I have not been able to find a clear instructions on how NFS4 handles this, but what I found didn't seem any better than Samba. I don't mind implementing ACLs on the server if it will do what I need, but I can't find anything that says it will save me any work either. Looking for a better way, Ted Miller Indiana, USA

Mounting Floppies

Hi - daft one for Friday morning coffee break: I have been trying to mount floppies on a couple of CentOS5 servers - the usual "mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy" (yes, /mnt/floppy exists!). On both servers, the mount command just doesn't come back and I have to hit CTRL-C. I have tried different media and also changed the floppy drive on one server, /dev/fd0 is seen as present on both servers and they are enabled in the BIOS. I have formatted and tested the floppies on my desktop PC without problems. In the end, I gave up, stuck a USB floppy on one of the boxes and it mounted with no problems. So is it me, CentOS 5 or something else? (Ideas, anyone!?). It could be a set of duff floppies and three flaky drives (two brand new), but I thought I'd ask before I spend too much more time on it! I have csvde dump from active directory I process on my postfix mta. It takes output like this: "CN=Curtis xxx,OU=Domain Users,OU=xxx xxx,DC=xxx-xxx,DC=local",X400:c=US\;a= \;p=xxx xxx xxx\;o=Exchange\;s=xxx\;g=xxx\;;SMTP:Cxxx@xxx-xxx.com and should return a relay_recipient map in the form of: Cxxx(a)xxx-xxx.com OK The command I am using is: cat $1 | tr -d \" | tr , \\n| tr \; \\n | awk -F\: '/(SMTP|smtp):/ {printf("%s\tOK\n",$2)}' Everything up to the awk is working, it drops the smtp: but its putting OK's all over the darn place. Anyone familiar enough with awk and printf that can suggest why this happens? Thanks! jlc

3ware 9650 issues

I've been having no end of issues with a 3ware 9650SE-24M8 in a server that's coming on a year old. I've got 24 WDC WD5001ABYS drives (500GB) hooked to it, running as a single RAID6 w/ a hot spare. These issues boil down to the card periodically throwing errors like the following: sd 1:0:0:0: WARNING: (0x06:0x002C): Command (0x8a) timed out, resetting card. Usually when this happens, it's followed by: 3w-9xxx: scsi1: AEN: INFO (0x04:0x005E): Cache synchronization completed:unit=0. On the less pleasant occasions, it's followed by: scsi1: ERROR: (0x06:0x0036): Response queue (large) empty failed during reset sequence. 3w-9xxx: scsi1: ERROR: (0x06:0x002B): Controller reset failed during scsi host reset. sd 1:0:0:0: scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery This of course leads to a several hour downtime as the system has to be powered down (not just rebooted) and then the volume needs to be fscked. I've been back and forth with both the vendor and (via the vendor) 3ware with this. The card has been replaced, as well as the whole system. I'm running the latest firmware and drivers from 3ware. Have other folks had good luck with this card? What sorts of configs are you running? is it possible to login to a switch via RS232 / serial port from the shell?

Hi all I have a problem switch in our data centre, which is connected to a linux server via a serial cable. I know I can / could access the switch from my Windows PC back at the office, using hyperterm, but trying to access it using minicom just doesn't seem to work. I have changed the comms in minincom to use /dev/tty0 & the baud rate to 9600, yet I can't seem to connect with minicom. Migrating from RHEL to Centos

Hi, I m currently running my production servers on RHEL 4.6 & would like to migrate to Centos4.6 as it has more benefits & advantages. I looked at the Centos release notes available at http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4.6/os/i386/RELEASE-NOTES-en.html and understood that the basic difference between RHEL & Centos are look/feel related & binaries,functionalities are almost same. But when i compared the sysctl values of RHEL4.6 with Centos4.6, i found that there are lot of differences in the parameter values. Now my question is: 1) Just like sysctl difference, is there any other difference between RHEL & Centos which could vary the performance & needs to be taken care during migration. 2) When the Centos packages are built, are they built with the same configuration as in RHEL or is there any difference. cannot unmount volume "xxx"

Hi all: I am using Centos 5.1. But now I have a problem when unmount a removable usb hard disk with right click and choose unmount volume command. When I did that, system reminds me with a message like this:Cannot unmount volume "xxx", Detail: Cannot remove directory, "xxx" represents a temporary directory made when the system auto mount the disk in /media, and "xxx" is simple-chinese. But in fact, the volume has been removed because there're no files or folder in xxx. Because the file system type of the hard disk is NTFS, Ｉ install ntfs-3g and add a script named "mount.ntfs" in /sbin, the content of the script is #!/bin/sh export LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8 exec /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g "$@" I googled this problem for many days and didn't find any way to solve this problem. Rsync + crontab centos5.1

Just looking at the "man rsync". Might as well be duagnosing a plattypus. I have made a dir on my Cent samba shares to setup a local fedora.repo (1) How do I get it to run weekly at a certain time. is this correct? crontab -e 22 7 0 0 /usr/bin/rsync -va /Fedora-Mirror /local samba share. (2) Trying to get cron it run 10pm every saturday night. Log whats happening. update packages, include new packages. Exlude extra languages from things like openoffice\xorg etc.. that the family don't need. (family lan) (3) Would one normally download the mirrors "repodata", or run create createrepo oneself?

lvm with iscsi devices on boot

Hi All, My CentOS 5.1 server is using iSCSI attached disks connecting to a dual controller storage array. I have also configured multipathd to manage the multiple paths. Everything works well, and on boot the dev nodes are automatically created in /dev/mapper. On these devices, I have created logical volumes using lvm2. My problem is that lvm does not recognize these iscsi/multipath volumes on boot up. I need to manually run "vgchange -ay" and mount the logical volumes by hand. I tried running the vgchange and mount commands from /etc/rc.local, but that has no effect. I have verified that /etc/rc.local itself is executing correctly. What do I need to put in my boot up scripts so logical volumes in iscsi/multipathd devices are automatically recognized on boot? TIA! - Raja

centos 4.6 - 586 install - how to get that to a 486 level if possible

Is there a method to get a 586 (i586 text) install to a 486 level? I am looking for information guidance on this. I have looked into using debian/386 which stinks in my opinion, slackware doesnt quite have it either. So I am wishing/hoping there is a NOT TO painful way to get a 586 install to run on a 486 chip. I have been searching but havent found anything useful. If anyone knows what might need to be done I would appreciate it. Jerry

Unfortunately I can't see the top of the errors as there are too many... :-( I'll throw a console on it and start logging. Is anyone else seeing this sort of activity? I'm running the latest stock kernel available using yum from the repos. I'm not using any additional repos(rpmforge, epel, etc...) and I don't have any custom compiled modules. how do I manage a Dell PE 860 server via IPMI?

Hi all I'm trying to get to grips with this one, but just can't figure it out. I recently acquired some 2nd hand Dell Poweredge 860 servers, and noticed that they have built in remote management interfaces. So, I have setup one, and assigned an IP address to it, but have no idea on how to access it remotely. Google'ing for an answer didn't bring me more than general product information about various different IPMI stuff. So, how do I actually access these servers remotely? Pulling Hair Out - TWiki 4.2 on CentOS 5

I thought I would turn here before giving up. I am trying to install Twiki 4.2 on CentOS 5 with all updates. (I also tried Twiki 4.1.2 as well) I am running a custom rolled Apache 2.2.8 server and custom rolled PHP 5.2.6 (built with oracle support). These work and are rock solid. I've been using the same config with very heavy duty scripts and php applications with no issues. When trying to run /twiki/bin/configure I get the following error when clicking "Next": Software error: Use of uninitialized value in substitution (s///) at (eval 25) line 23. The Apache error log says pretty much the same thing. (like 23 by the way points to a commented line; the first 100 or so lines in this script are comments.. If I don't count the commented lines there is no search regexp anywhere near line 23) I then tried version 4.1.2 and the same thing. I googled and found numerous other people having this problem. I have found no responses or solutions. The twiki support site has yielded nothing as well. Just hoping someone here might have sorted this out.. I have set up dozens of twiki sites but haven't played with it in a 2 years or so and wondering... It was never this difficult before.. Three of us have now triple checked every file permissions, installation step, system pre-requisite, etc... Thanks for any help, CC

Hi Anne, I have many servers running clamav, simply use the dag repos http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/ and install it via yum "yum install clamav clamd" then run freshclam, thats it. Kernel panic - not syncing: CPU context corrupt

Hi, Is there someone on this mailing list who could/want help me figure out this issue? We do not know where to look to solve this. --- Description --- This is a brand new server, which has been tested for days with FreeBSD in our office, and a few days with Windows on the site of our hardware distributor. Now customer wants CentOS, which we installed, but after few days we get a kernel panic. Last night at 2:08 it gave the same kernel panic. Please tell me what information I should give you and most important how to get it from the system, because we do not have experience with CentOS (only FreeBSD). I would be very surprised if this is hardware related. We use the same hardware for several years, and run FreeBSD on it very successfully. It is a SuperMicro PDSMI+ motherboard with 3ware raid controller (8006-2LP). CPU is Xeon 3040 1.8 Ghz EM64 2MB 1066FSB (65W). Memory is DDR 2 Trancend 2048MB ECC Unbuffered 800. Error message on console is in "Additional Information".
