Dear All, Thank you very much to every one on the list for the sincere suggestion and recommendations I have received amazing response from all; I will try to recap a) Use CentOS for server infrastructure and fedora 8 on the workstations b) Use K12ltsp-terminal server and all the client machines as thin clients c) Use CentOS as Server and Ubuntu as client OS d) Use RHEL on the server ( NO RHEL NO CENTOS) e) Use SME from Contribs.org for server and ubuntu for clients f) Use Scientific Linux (binary compatibility with RHEL) for Server g) Clarkconnect for server side and Ubuntu or FC on client side h) Use IPcop as firewall Although ClarkConnect, SME are based on RHEL, I have decided not to go on that path because of lack of large community behind them + Vendor Lock-In With K12ltsp- sounds very nice but I don't have a large and grunty server I have to make the workstation as server, probably a good option if I had a powerful server :-( With serious consideration I have decided to go with suggestion a) Use CentOS for server infrastructure and Fedora 8 on workstation and have old machine running IPCop as firewall I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all, this mailing list is by far the best I have ever seen, I would like to specially thank Ian Blackwell for offering more support and help; I will keep you updated on this project, I am sure there will be a lot of question and problem that will raise and conjure from this project Once again thank you all for the help and effort -- Harry Sukumar ________________________________ From: Harry Sukumar Sent: Tuesday, 10 June 2008 3:04 PM To: 'centos(a)centos.org' Subject: School Server Setup Hello All!!! syncrepl in OpenLDAP 2.3.x (CentOS 5) and updating on a replica

Hi, I have a setup with two CentOS 5 machines running OpenLDAP 2.3.x, right now the primary uses slurpd to send the updates to the second server, and the second server is using "updatedn" to allow updates (from what I understand! I'm no OpenLDAP guru here.) Clients are using pam_ldap and nss_ldap to get the users and authenticate them in LDAP. Right now hosts query only the primary LDAP server, that is the address set on the "host" variable of /etc/ldap.conf. Changing password with "passwd" works fine, and the password is correctly replicated to the secondary server. Now, first thing, I wanted to load balance between the two servers. The way I did it was to register a Round-Robin DNS record, with one A entry for each server IP, and I used that entry in the "host" variable of /etc/ldap.conf. Everything worked. Queries going each time to a different server. I was expecting to have problems changing passwords, but amazingly it worked. Apparently when a password change request goes to the second server, that server will do a query on the first server to do the password change, and then (through slurpd) the change gets replicated on the second one. Everything great. Now, I was reading that syncrepl is superior to slurpd, and that syncrepl is the preferred method of replication. I actually saw that it's true when I saw that it actually replicated the master without having to stop it and copy the dbs (which is necessary with slurpd.) I even saw that in OpenLDAP 2.4.x slurpd is deprecated/discontinued and only syncrepl is supported. So I'm trying to migrate from slurpd to syncrepl. And so far everything is working fine in my test environments. This is what I have configured on the master: overlay syncprov syncprov-checkpoint 1 10 syncprov-sessionlog 100 And on the slave: syncrepl rid=1 provider=ldap://ldap1.mydomain.com type=refreshAndPersist searchbase="dc=mydomain,dc=com" schemachecking=off bindmethod=simple binddn="cn=Manager,dc=mydomain,dc=com" credentials=xxxxxxxxxxx updateref ldap://ldap1.mydomain.com/ It works with queries, and when I do an update on the master, it replicates fine to the slave. But when I try to do some change on the slave, that's what I get: $ ldapdelete -H ldap://ldap2.mydomain.com/ -D cn=Manager,dc=mydomain,dc=com \ -w XXXXXXX -x uid=usertodelete,ou=Users,dc=mydomain,dc=com ldap_delete: Referral (10) referrals: ldap://ldap1.mydomain.com/uid=usertodelete,ou=Users,dc=mydomain,dc=com I would like to have something closer to what happens when using slurpd, which seems to be more transparent to clients. I tried to set "updatedn" but slapd complained that it is supported when using slurpd. I also tried to start configuring overlay on the slave and syncrepl on the master, but when I do that I can't run updates on either side, both of them end up being read-only. I read that on OpenLDAP 2.4.x Administration Guide, on the section about multi-master replication, but I then saw that multi-master replication is supposed to work only on 2.4.x, and not on 2.3.x, so that's apparently not an option. So I ask: is there a way to configure OpenLDAP so that the slave (running syncrepl) can send updates to the master when receives from a client? Or (not as good but still an option): If I use "updateref" to send Referral, how can I make sure the tools (ldapdelete, ldapmodify, ldapadd, ...) actually *follow* the referral (I looked for that in man pages and didn't find any obvious options for that)? And more important, will pam_ldap and nss_ldap follow those referrals when changing the password? Do I have to set something on /etc/ldap.conf for that? Upgrade to 2.4.x is something I would like to avoid, since I would rather stick with what is supported by CentOS 5. Long term, I'm planning to replace all this infrastructure to FreeIPA (http://www.freeipa.org/) which is supposed to be a more robust product, but that is going to take a while, so I'm trying to at least do the best I can with what I have now. Hi Harry, Has much has I like Centos and RH for big sophisticated setup, it would not be my first choice for your project. For 25 systems and if you want this done without spending to much time, Clarkconnect would by my first choice for server side OS (#2 would be SME). For me CentOS x64 is #1 choice for enterprise (+500 users with Terabytes of storage ) sever solution. If you have little experience configuring a RH server, get ready to spend lots of time getting everything going as nicely as Clarkconnect does it. Not seeing all memory in CentOS 5.1 x86_64

I'm running CentOS 5.1 with all updates, and the xen kernel. Hi list, Best Buy currently has an eMachine on sale for less than $300.00 without monitor. I didn't see any recent complaints on www.consumeraffairs.com. I didn't take the time to do a thourgh search so may have missed some. Red Hat hardware list does not have one eMachine listed. I went to eMachine's home page and found the following: AMD Athlon™ BE-2350 dual-core processor NVIDIA® GeForce® 6100 2048MB DDR2 dual-channel 320GB 7200rpm SATA II 16x DVD±R/RW SuperMulti drive High-performance 15-in-1 digital media card reader 6-channel (5.1) high-definition audio They do not list the manufacturer/model of the media card reader and audio. Could this be an advantage of CentOS over the PNAELV distribution?

Hello all, I understand that when releasing updates the CentOS team strips logos and such things from the upstream sources. If I'm not mistaken there is also a certain QA process going on before the actual releases, at least for major updates like the upcoming 5.2 version. Does this happen also for security updates? Since I don't mind the small delay from the upstream releases I was wondering if the additional QA process could actually be an advantage over the PNAELV distribution. This could be even more true if the QA isn't only related to CentOS specific changes but it's done even for practically untouched updates. Is this assumption correct? Thanks for reading, Luigi

yum upgrade 4.3 -> current ?

Got a box running 4.3 x86 and we're trying up get it updated to 4.6, but yum is consuming all available memory (1GB) and swap (2GB), and then the oom starts killing processes. I've disabled all the optional repositories, done yum clean all, and still have the same problem even if I try to just update a specific package. Bind Standard Practise

In a chroot Bind installation, named.conf is located in /var/named/chroot/etc/. In that file, references to files for includes and other zones can be made as "filename" without a path. What is the expected location when no path is used, simply up one dir under chroot/? While moving a DNS from one machine to another, I noticed all ref's are "/etc/filename" and they are in the same dir as named.conf which obviously looks different from all the sample files. Excluded files from repos?

Ok.. I'm way behind the 8-ball on setting things up correctly, but after going over the protection things in yum, I ran a yum check-update and it returned with having 318 files excluded because of protection. Is that too high a number? I have the numerical protection set to 1. Is there a good tutorial about how to correctly set up the protect base. Sorry if this is a noobie question.. I've been away from CentOS for some time and needing to get back into the swing of things. Thanks.. Sam

RHEL/CentOS5.2 and rsyslogd

Hi there, I am slightly confused by the RHEL release notes and an earlier thread here about rsyslogd, so I hope someone can clear this up for me; I see that rsyslog is included in RHEL as of 5.2 (and so will be available in CentOS when 5.2 is ready) however there is no indication of whether it has been made the default syslogger or not - is it an optional package or installed by default on a fresh install? (I would check myself, but I do not have any RHEL5 machines to hand.) Thanks -Laurence

TFP inside firewall

Hi, I have a setup where the tftp server is inside the firewall. Now the issue is tftp client send request on dynamic udp port. Can anyone give some idea, how i can bind the fixed port for client udp requests ? Otherwise i hope, it is not a solution that i will open all port related to UDP in the firewall. Regards, lingu

Newer GNOME than base release

I have asked about this before, but I don't have a workable answer yet. I would like to know if there is a way to install a more recent GNOME package on CentOS 5.x than 2.16.0. 1) GNOME Bugzilla does not support this version any more - all bugs go into the bit bucket. 2) Having been exposed to Fedora 8 at work and seeing how much more flexible GNOME 2.22 is, I would REALLY like to take a shot at using it on my CentOS systems. 3) I asked about this on the GNOME list and I was told I should build it, and that jhbuild or garnome would do the job for me. This has not been my experience - both of them have major hangups building on my home desktop (the 64-bit hybrid CentOS 5.1 environment). 4) Johnny suggested I try mock to build in a chroot, pure 64-bit environment. I was unable to locate a mock that actually installed and worked on my system. (Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm the only person for whom this does not work. Heard it, can't believe it, must be doing something most others don't, whatever.... ;*) I have trouble believing that the ONLY ways to get a newer GNOME are to wait for CentOS 6, run a different distro (not likely) or build it myself. This is Linux, after all, isn't it? (That's a rhetorical question - no answer required, unless those /really are/ the only options....) TIA. mhr

Setting up a chroot

I'm trying to build GNOME (to run a more recent version than 2.16.* on CentOS 5.1) and I keep running into a lot of rather strange problems. I'm wondering if this might have something to do with my hybrid 64 and 32 bit general environment, so I want to try a pure 64-bit chroot. I've never done this before, and I'm not entirely sure how to, and I didn't see anything particularly on point, either at centos.org or google. If I missed it, just say where and that should be enough. Guidelines? Suggestions (other than "go away" or other physically difficult crudities :-)? Thanks. mhr

Kernel Panic

I am very very new to the linux world.. I am having problems with CentOS5.1 with kernel panics. I belive the cause of the kernel panics are a software that I am running on the machine, but I cannot find any information as to what the system was doing prior to the crash, i have looked in the /var/log/messaging to no solution. I guess what I am asking is what do i need to turn on for when this kernel crash comes again? It happens with in hours or days of running this software, it is random and sudden. Thanks, Ryan Nichols

Help!

Folks, I have a bit of a problem and can't seem to figure out what is getting broken or why. I've been pulling my hair out trying to get clamav or clamav-milter to install and permit yum update to continue. What is happening is this: I yum install the clamav package, but when I try to do an update on the system, it constantly returns with an error of a Missing Dependency for clamd and clamav-db. I've installed and erased clamav several times, and that's the only way I can do a yum update on the system. The files are coming from sourceforge, and the version is 0.93-2.el4rf. Perhaps I'm not installing in the correct sequence or something, so could someone please tell me how to go about getting all the dependencies for the clamav package? This is the x86_64 version I've been working with. Many thanks.... Sam

HI folks, I've an up-to-date CentOS 5.x box on a small intranet (<20 users). We did a reboot over the weekend and all appears well except that clients on the LAN can no longer send email. Just hangs/times out. No clear identifiers in the /var/log/maillog or /var/log/messages. I've set up a CentOS 5 system as a server for http installs. Currently up-to-date with httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3 mod_security-2.1.7-1.el5 my installs were failing just after the root password set up, before software selection. I tracked it down to a server error 500 and it was due to mod_security claiming the comps.xml file was too big The error: [Tue Jun 10 09:59:01 2008] [error] [client XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX] ModSecurity: Output filter: Content-Length (934390) over the limit (524288). [hostname "XXX.XXX"] [uri "/install/centos/5/x86_64/ repodata/comps.xml"] [unique_id "VJNb-4inMQIAACd0XcwAAAAA"] This is set in /etc/httpd/mod_security.d/modsecurity_crs_10_config.conf SecResponseBodyLimit 524288 I increased that size and all is now well, but can somebody enlighten me as to the purpose of that setting? I already know how to install grub on the second drive. The issue is that this is a production server and I'm trying to avoid rebooting it if possible. I'm looking for a way to determine whether grub is installed on a drive WITHOUT having to actually attempt to boot from it. If I redo the installation, then I can be sure it's installed, but if it's already there, I'd rather leave it alone. There's no point in messing with it if it's already installed. -- Bowie

School Server Setup

Hello All!!! I was wondering if you can help me little bit.... I am trying to help (voluntary service) a country side school (Aboriginal community) in Northern Queensland Australia setup lab infrastructure, it's a very remote school and they don't have enough funds to go commercial The school has only till grade 6 They have 25 machines that was bought out of the government grant but none of the machines come with windows I was asked by the school president to setup lab infrastructure currently they have Internet (Dynamic) with only two machines connected I have asked them to change the plan to Static IP address which I presume will be done some time this week I have decided to go Linux on all the machines including the server Could some one please cast some light on how I can carry on with this project, I am not sure where to start and I am fairly new to Linux and system administration world Currently what's in my mind is to setup fedora on all desktop and CentOS5 as my server with following services configured Proxy-squid (all the traffic to pass through) Firewall Apache Squirrel mail DNS DHCP I am not sure where to start with this project Your help will be highly appreciated by the little kids who have never even touched a computer before in there life!!! -- Many Thanks Harry

Hello all! I was wondering if you can help me a little bit... My boss wants me to do some research in finding which hardware is most used under Linux(ex. Dell servers, Barebones Kits, HP & Compaq servers, etc.) This is just for budgeting issues...he wants to get rid of some old and obsolete hardware we run and wants to know which hardware could be easy to deploy on the server side and workstations side(common user boxes will be decided for HP or Dell leasing quotes - Obviously M$ Windows Vista). So if you could just state your hardware I'll be very greatful. We run several servers based on RHEL, Debian(Couple Ubuntus), CentOS, running services such as Sendmail, Apache, JBoss, Postgres, Oracle, Samba and DNS. We have around 5000 users logging on these servers. hi, Hardware: core2duo(E8400)/Intel Classic Board DG33FBC / 2x2GB I have been trying to install 5.1x64 for it's longterm support and xen but it just does not install till acpi=off is passed. works with one core after that and does not power off. netboot, vnc and no keyboard/mouse/monitor

hey guys, I just created a custom netboot cd, that launches and loads from a http source, but connects to a vnc listening viewer. All in all, not hard to do, but what is different with this one is that it skips the media check, has no prompts and allows you to start the install on a machine that has no keyboard/mouse/monitor. Was handy for me as when i have some boxes to load, I just plug in power and ethernet in the corner (or where ever I have room) and go through the install. I know it also works with a cd as a source (if you use it from cd 1), and assume it would also work with a DVD (have not tested yet). If you would like it, I can add to the wiki if anyone would like it. DNK

Hi. I've got a new Centos 5.1 x86-64 server that uses PHP to communicate with MySQL5. On this server, PHP/Mysql connections are dead slow and unresponsive. It takes sometimes up to a minute to list tables in phpmyadmin for example. I've verified on the server that the issue has to be PHP/Mysql related. If I use a CGI based Mysql admin tool, communication is fast and there are no delays. The server is Xeon based and has 4GB of RAM. SElinux is enabled, and ModSecurity for Apache too. Disabling these two does not help. SElinux allows Apache to network connect. Some php.ini settings: =============================== safe_mode = On max_execution_time = 60 max_input_time = 60 memory_limit = 128M open_basedir is active, and there are no conflicts. disable_functions also contain several functions in order to secure server. allow_fopen_url is disabled =============================== Could there be a bug somewhere that is causing this slowness for PHP/Mysql connections. I remember seeing one with an example migrating from an old fashioned filesystem on a partition to a new filesystem on a mirrored lvm logical volume but one only one side of the mirror is set up at this time. First I need to copy stuff from what will become the second side of the mirror to filesystem on the first side or the mirror Then I will be ready to follow the rest of the tutorial and build and attach the second side of the mirror. Wish I could remember where I saw that tutorial. Want to embellish the example and stripe each side of the mirror. Understanding a mirrored pair of stripes, seems easier than understanding a striped pair of mirrors. But this seems like a place where counterintuitive results are not a big surprise. I can do mirroring and striping in lvm, mdadm, or a hardware raid controller. There are lots of configurations to ponder. What about recovery after a hardware raid controller? What are the chances of being able to replace the controller and start up successfully from drives? I know that assuming the failed controller did write bad stuff to the drives while it was crashing and burning. I would not be surprised if the controller firmware revisions had to match. I would be surprised but not astonished if the board hardware revision level had to match, too. I hope we are past those days. new install of 5.1 with KVM-over-IP - can't install with GUI - need assistance

Hi All, I have several dozens of CentOS and WhiteBox servers. Most of them are CentOS 4.6. Our installation service is done in the datacenter where the servers are located. When we install a fresh clean install, we use the GUI menus, while using the KVMoverIP. That was working great with CentOS 4.x In CentOS 5.x, the installation process 'annonces" that "Hey,. I know you are using a KVM and don't have a monitor attached" (who cares??). But, "since you are using a KVM and no monitor is attached,. you CANNOT use the GUI installation". Why??? 4.x didn't care for this. Why make my life difficult? I have to 'cheat' by calling the datacenter to plug a monitor for the first minute of the install and then plug back the KVM cable. Isn't this stupid? of course it is! I am looking for a solution such as a parameter that I can pass to the boot sequence (vga=nommconf or something like that) so that it won't do the probing for the VGA and just let me go about my business. Mind you that this is a problem both with DELL PowerEdge 1950iii with DRAC5 remote consule as well as with just plain PCs that use ATEN KVM 9116. Once the probe understand that we don't use a monitor it prompts the 'can't use the GUI'. Any pointers about this? Thanks, -Sup.

OT: really dumb question about APC UPS

We have about 4 servers connected to an APC UPS. The UPS only has one UPS connection. So my question is, in a power outage how do i get all my servers to safely shutdown? Do i run a USB hub? Do i write a script on the one machine connected to turn off all the other machines? I'm confused. Jamie

Chroot'ed SSH

Hi, Is anyone chrooting users that connect through SSH? I looked for it on Google and I basically saw several methods: - OpenSSH 5 supports ChrootDirectory (FC9 apparently has RPMs that probably could be rebuilt under CentOS 5) - There seem to be several patches for OpenSSH 4.x to do the chroot, the most popular seems to be http://chrootssh.sf.net/ - There appears to be a pam_chroot - There are solutions based on setting the user's shell to a script/binary that does the chroot By quickly looking at yum list, it doesn't seem like neither RHEL nor CentOS directly support any of those, at least I didn't find any RPMs for any of those. If anyone is doing it, I would like to know what were your experiences and if you would recommend doing it or not. I'm specially interested in anything that doesn't involve replacing the OpenSSH that comes with CentOS, after all, that's what CentOS is all about, if you start replacing the pieces, what's the point... Hi, My boss asked me to harden a CentOS box by removing "hacker" tools, such as nmap, tcpdump, nc (netcat), telnet, etc. I would like to know which list of packages would you remove from a base install. I would appreciate if someone could point me to a "standard" way of doing this. I know there are procedures for hardening a machine (I remember reading about Bastille Linux) but I don't know how effective they are and if they include the removal of such tools in their procedures. So i have added to the end of the syslog.conf # Python python.* /var/log/python and restarted syslog, then i have created /var/log/python and for sure addedd u+rw, g +rw, o+rw permissions But, nothing, /var/log/python is empty What am i doing wrong? Remove the yum group gnome (does this set default init to 3?), install the yum group KDE and then set default init to 5 again (as I assume installing KDE not during the setup will not automatically set the system to start the gui?). You don't mention it but I assume you are running on Fiber Channel not iSCSI? I am running GFS using CentOS 5.1 from two servers using iSCSI. I have Device Mapper Multipath setup so that makes my performance characteristics a little different but I have tuned the servers with the following commands: gfs_tool settune <mountpoint> demotes_secs 600 gfs_tool settune <mountpoint> scand_secs 10 gfs_tool settune <mountpoint> statfs_slots 128 The first two I have set until 5.2 drops which will contain an additional GFS tuning parameter, glock_purge. Update 5 of CentOS 4 may already have the glock_purge parameter available. Run the command 'gfs_tool gettune <mountpoint>' and see if glock_purge is listed. It should be set to zero by default. If it is there you can refer to this brief write up on tuning with glock_purge since you will not want to use the demote_secs and scand_secs settings I am using: http://open-sharedroot.org/Members/marc/blog/blog-on-gfs/glock-trimming-pat… Also, as a further note, your particular usage scenario will dictate what tunings are appropriate. wpa_supplicant and machine freezes

Hi Folks, I'd like to install my USB-WLAN-Stick Netgear WG111v3. Ndiswrapper works correct after installing Kernel-Modules from atrpm ndiswrapper-kmdl-2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.centos.plus-1.52-16.el5.i686.rpm. But by calling wpa_supplicant with wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -D wext -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -d machine freezes. My wpa_supplicant.conf: ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant eapol_version=1 ap_scan=1 network={ ssid="MyNet" scan_ssid=1 proto=WPA key_mgmt=WPA-PSK pairwise=TKIP group=TKIP #psk="MyPSK" psk=9050ec6fe020b1738fce16c93c33b3809b9e62d5e6bf955518076eb2d7263 } With this configuration it works correct with Sidux (a debian clone). But with CentOS 5.1 ....??? No hints in /var/log/messages or dmesg available. Has somebody an advice/ a solution for me? More information needed? Thx Timothy

[CentOS] Network problems on new CentOS 5 install on P35, ICH9R mobo

Had to replace dying cpu and mobo, so also replaced IDE with new SATA drive. Installed from latest ISO onto SATA and can't get networking to lease an IP address from my ISP (Comcast). The network utility always comes up with a private address (192.168.0.2) instead of Comcast IP. To add to confusion, if I boot into old IDE drive, I get proper network connection to internet, but lose my swap! Particulars: mobo=Gigabyte P35-DS3R SATA Controller=AHCI PATA Controller=JMicron 20360 new drive=ATA WDC WD1600AAJS-2 old drive=WDC WD400JB-00JJA0 DVD-RW=Pioneer DVR-112D (PATA) NICs=eth0=Realtek RTL-8029(AS) (DHCP) eth1=Realtek RTL-8029(AS) (Static) Has anyone seen this? Will 5.2 help with this situation? Been working on this for days! Hi folks, I have an HP Proliant 140DL G2 server with what appears to be an IDE drive in non-DMA mode. Performance on the server is extremely bad when large amounts of disk activity is taking place. I successfully installed CentOS on 3ware 9650SE controller. Due to some issues with compatibility with my motherboard, I replaced it with a 9690SA. Now the system won't boot (although interestingly enough, it find the boot menu fine, just won't boot past a certain point in the bootup phase. I thought I would reinstall, but anaconda doesn't find the raid array. 3ware does have drivers on their site, but I'm not too sure how to get them on my system? Russ

I think I have booting issues for my custom kernel on centos 4. the sda system cannot find the disk. I used a qemu image to build a centos 4 MATH_EMULATION kernel. This system has /dev/hda. The system I am putting the vmlinuz and initrd files on is a /dev/sda system. I dont think the initrd image is getting built correctly. Does this make sense? What might I look at changing to ensure my initrd is made correctly. Jerry

Live CD?

I just used a Live CD for the first time today, in part to show what CentOS can do for a co-worker who is looking at using it at work and home, but I got the strangest result. We booted the CD and let the centos user log in. It took a really long time to load the desktop and there were no panels, so the only things we could do were browse the computer, CD, home, file system, keyboard (sort of) and pretty much nothing else. <alt><f2> and <alt><f1> did nothing, either - no menu, no input windows - nada. Is that normal? If not, what did I/we overlook? I was expecting a lot more, and from looking around the wiki, there should have been, but I couldn't find a good reference for what the Live CD is supposed to be able to do or let a user do. Hi all, I just installed a CentOS 5 machine from Kickstart. I configure NSS and PAM to lookup and authenticate users from LDAP with authconfig. On my LDAP I also have some automount configuration, but I'm not running automount on this server. SELinux is installed and enforcing. Whenever I try to install an RPM (and in other occasions during boot) I see those messages: # rpm -Uvh ... .rpm /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts: Multiple same specifications for /usr/local/lost\+found/.*. /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts: Multiple same specifications for /usr/local/\.journal. /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts: Multiple same specifications for /usr/local/lost\+found. The RPM installs fine, I guess those are just warnings. (Actually, /usr/local is practically empty, and there are no lost+found or .journal there, so I guess those are really innocuous.) Frequent Gnome Terminal crashes in CentOS 5.1

Ever since I upgraded all my systems to CentOS 5.1 I have been getting reports from users about "all their windows disappearing". A little digging revealed that they meant all gnome-terminal windows. Since there is only one gnome-terminal process by default for all your open terminal windows and tabs, a crash of that process means losing all your terminal windows. These crashes often (but not always) occur over night when the system is otherwise idle. A quick Google search found a problem on Ubuntu related to VTE (the terminal emulator widget used by gnome-terminal) but not much else of interest. Has anyone on this list experienced this? I find it hard to believe I'm the only one. I never saw this issue while running CentOS 4.X on these systems... Alfred

5.1 Anaconda Install Error

I'm unable to install x86_64 on a host. The installer gets through the first part, asking for install type and it begins loading the images from whatever media was selected. Then anaconda spills a series of cryptic messages ending in 'file not found' and the console on F2 is locked up. I've tried this with physical DVD media, PXE-HTTP and media-boot HTTP install. It happens every time. This is a reinstall to this host. The weird thing is that I was able to install to this host from this media previously. I've seen the note at bugs.centos.org regarding an incorrect .discinfo file but that doesn't seem to be it. The .diskinfo file: 1195929648.203590 Final x86_64 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 CentOS/base /home/buildcentos/CENTOS/5.1/en/x86_64/CentOS CentOS/pixmaps Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Kirk Bocek

Thanks, The issue dos not seem to be with the separator. It is with the @ as a leading char in the group name. I have setup a new server centos 5.1 server as a storage server with over 7TB of storage. The server has been integrated into a large Active Directory network there are 5 primary AD servers and a large number of local AD server at each location (over 20). There are also over 15 trusted domains hundreds of groups and thousands of users. It has been quite a challenge to integrate the Linux server with Samba into this incitement. I am now at a point where I can change user and group ownership of filed and folders at AD users and connect to the server with a windows client. There are also issues with Samba not starting on bootup (yes the service is set to start at level 3 system starts non GUI). And it seems to take quite a while for system to recognize domain users on startup. The [TEST] share works with out issue. The [TEST-ENG] share is not working no matter what I do. The issue that I am having is that most of the groups have a @ at the beginning. Ie: @DIV-Engineering This conflicts with the Samba valid users = directive in the smb.conf. I have been able to change the group ownership to @DIV-Engineering in the file-system without any issues. Is there any way to do this? Hi all, I am soo close. I have have made my custom kernel from a DIFFERENT machine, I have hte USB booting, I have 3 partitions, 1-fat12, 2 - ext3, 3 is swap. on booting it says: VFS cannot open root device NULL please append root= I tried root=/dev/sda2 and still nothing. Is there something about building a kernel on one machine and then taking that to another machine with different disk structure and it not booting??? What do you do in that case? I think - hope - this is my last step to get past... jerry

vsftpd and active mode connections causes FTP session to hang

I've encountered an odd error state that I haven't been able to resolve yet. I have a customer that, for what ever reason, wants to use active mode occasionally for FTP xfers. What they have noticed, is that after you switch to active, and issue a command (they do 'ls', I've done other things like 'put' and 'get', etc.), the connection hangs. If you wait a bit it returns with a "425 Failed to establish connection". I've tried this on three hosts so far (all CentOS 5) and they all behave the same, some of which there is effectively no firewall (all traffic is allowed from my workstation to the host, and no restrictions on exiting traffic). All google searches about this behavour thus far have talked about old versions of vsftpd or using filesystems such as FAT, which don't apply in all cases. Dell 1950 Perc 6/i with centos 4.5

We are currently running CentOS 4.5 on older Dell Systems. We are upgrading to Dell PowerEdge 1950 with a PERC 6/i raid controller. CentOS 4.5 installation does not see the PERC 6/i controller. Dell and LSI Logic only support RHEL 4U6 and higher and SuSe. I've tried building the boot images with the new driver for installation but kickstart still doesn't see the raid controller. I've also used the DRIVERDISK directive within kickstart but that didn't work either. Has anyone else experienced this? Anyone have any suggestions on what I might try next? Appreciate any help. enter run level

I have a centos 4 x86_64 machine that has been working fine. It has software RAID-1. Now when it boots I get the GRUB screen, I get the very first screen about loading Init then I get a prompt about: Enter Run Level: When I enter 3 nothing happens... This is obviously not a normal boot situation. First question: Why this prompt? Second question: since it is software raid do I run e2fsck /dev/sda1 then e2fsck /dev/sdb1? I am booted presently into linux rescue mode. Seems like /dev/md0 is not know in linux rescue... I presume the file system is messed up so I was wanting to run e2fsck. It is an ext3 system. I was in the #centos-social channel and simply stated that I noticed CentOS 3-4 were getting a lot of updates. I also stated that the CentOS 5 was one kernel behind, as in RHEL it is at -53, the gentlemen then told me that I was wrong and it was at -21. I then asked if there was a way to get a progress report somehow on 5.2, and that 5.2 has already upgraded that kernel. The result was that I was banned for being correct. I dont understand this kind of support.

Hi I just grabbed an 8gig thumb drive, took disk 1 centos 4 i386, copied the isolinux directory files to my thumbdrive, then ran syslinux -sf /dev/sdc1 on the device plugged it into my laptop and it does not boot. Is there a step(s) I am missing to get a bootable thumbdrive with centos? Thanks, Jerry

One of our Windows machines here has this interesting property that I could not duplicate in Linux (F8, but I'll check it later at home from C5.1, too). If I open a DOS window, set the properties to have a white background with dark blue font, telnet to another machine, and run some commands, sometimes the commands echo in gray on black (and stay that way). For example, the default ls (which has the color=tty option set), does this, but only with what it prints to the screen. The real killer is vi, which resets the whole screen background back to black with colored fonts, some of which are really hard to read (like dark blue on black - egad!). When I log out, the DOS window resets, but only what it prints, unless I clear the screen, which "fixes" it. Does anyone know anything about this? Seems really strange (like most WinDO$ weirdness). NEVER happens on my Linux box, but it does happen through rdesktop.... Thanks. mhr

I created a i586 install image with qemu. I downloaded the SRPMS package for the kernel and installed it. I cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS rpmbuild -bp --target i586 kernelXXX.spec I does a bunch of things but it did not build a new kernel and put it in /boot I think I am missing a command to actually BUILD the kernel. Anyone have experience with these kernel parameters? I can't find a whole lot of info on them. I have a situation where I'm trying to stress test a server, dual proc quad core with a tomcat application that is really fast. We can get it to about 60% CPU usage, and processing about 1,350 requests a second but we can't get much past that. It seems we are maxing out the sockets on the system, with more than 60,000 connections in TIME_WAIT. Our requests are really small and light and short lived. So I was thinking of using these parameters to get more out of the tcp stack. Our load balancer is configured to terminate connections to the world after 25 seconds(a typical request takes 0.1 seconds to complete), but I'm not sure if that applies to the systems behind the load balancer as well(I suspect not because there's no apparent setting for that). Currently I have the system configured to take a lower amount of traffic, hovering at around 47% CPU, at around 833 req/s and it has 43k connections in these states: #### state ------------------ 65 CLOSING 94 ESTABLISHED 172 FIN_WAIT1 50 FIN_WAIT2 10 LAST_ACK 497 SYN_RECV 43480 TIME_WAIT On a side note, the 'active tcp sockets' reported by sar seems wildly inaccurate, it reports only ~10 active tcp sockets, it barely varies from the system being idle to the system being maxxed out. The docs I can find says seek expert assistance..any experts reading this ? Running CentOS 4.6 thanks nate

ok..i can install dovecot+postfix+MYSQL..etc..and maybe the problem it's resolve. i don't have problem with the machines, the machines are goods, my problem is the tranparent receive e-mails to the users than are distributed in four machines with the same number the users and different users in each. as does google??. they have one entry to e-mail system (gmail.com) but they have several machine (maybe thousands) in transparent mode. i read something like LVS...some comment about this software..! is my solution or I'm lost? rpm -q versus what's installed

I am trying to install Oracle client 10g (10.2.0) on a 64-bit CentOS 5.0 system. 'rpm -q make gcc glibc etc' reveals some packages as "not installed", yet a yum install <package name> consistently returns Nothing to do. Yum list available <package name> yields nothing needed. If rpm -q <list of packages> lists some that are "not installed" but every variant of yum install and yum list I've tried and googled claiims nothing more needs to be installed, either the OS is misreporting (I doubt that) or I'm missing something that is not easily being revealed, or that I haven't used in a long time and outright forgetting. I still need (per rpm -q): compat-gcc compat-gcc-c++ compat-libstsdc++-devel openmotif21 gnome-libs There has been a suggestion of the version of Oracle (32 or 64 bit) I'm trying to install, but after thinking about it, I believe this question is a more fundamental operating system issue. tzdata, Greenwich zone: URGENT!

Hi! It appears that there have been some changes to tzdata recently. We run an application that needs the server to stay at GMT. Previously, we used the Casablanca timezone but now there seems to be a 1 hour difference to GMT. I checked the London zone and they seem to change time too. I tried to change the zone to GMT with system-config-date (i'm using command line remotely) but didn't find the Greenwich zone! Is there any way to fixed this ? I'm trying to set up mounting of a Windows share for non-root users via /etc/fstab on a CentOS 4.6 box - I've followed the instructions at: <http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/WindowsShares> Using something like the /etc/fstab example given in the wiki page (with, of course, using a valid share, username and password for my set up): //winbox/getme /mnt/win cifs user,uid=500,rw,suid,username=sushi,password=yummy 0 0 When as a non-root user I do: % mount /mnt/win mount error 1 = Operation not permitted Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) Running mount as root works fine, but I can not get it to work for non-root users. I am building a latest CentOS5 and every newest stuff is ready. All are in directory "/linux/CentOS/5-respin/os/x86_64". My OS is CentOS5 too. I want to add some other pictures during installation process, so anaconda adjustment is needed.
