Managing Eclipse Plugins

Hi People, I just wondered if anyone had an suggestions on how to manage Eclipse plugins where RPMS don't exist for the particular plugin. In this case Aptana. Using the instructions here http://www.aptana.com/docs/index.php/Plugging_Aptana_into_an_existing_Eclip… I can install the plugin manually to /usr/share/eclipse so that its available to all users on the box. But I need to install this plugin on a high number of machines. I know I could install it on a single machine and then tar up /usr/share/eclipse and turn this into an rpm. But I think this will be asking for trouble in the long run. So I then did some research and found that I should be able to use eclipse update manager from the command line see http://help.eclipse.org/help32/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclipse.platform.doc.is… Thinking that perhaps I could use a script to do the install or use a script to create an RPM. But so far I can't get any of the Eclipse Update Manager commands to work. Asking on some eclipse Newsgroups has got a couple of cryptic responses. So I thought I would ask if anyone had ideas about the best way to achieve what I am after. Also if anyone uses the Eclipse Update Manager from the command line and can give me an example of a command line that works, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Compile error on CentOS 4.6

I am installing SPLASH(http://www-flash.stanford.edu/SPLASH/) benchmark codes on CentOS 4.6. And there is compile error during make.. Here is the error messages. Does it come from the gcc library? Should I update the gcc or other library? Installing GLIBC for CentOS 4.6

I'd like to modify pthread library ( e.g. manipulating some functions ) in glibc, so I want to compile and install modified glibc. However, I failed to compile glibc and need some help. How can I fix the problem? Blocking external usb storage

HI, This is my first mail to this mailing list.I want to block external usb storage completly on my server running on centos 5 having confidiential data. For that i used udev and blocked the external usb storage by creating the udev rule mentioning any usb storage will get mounted to /dev/null so that users cant mount as well. Hello all, I just been wasting time with an Asus mobo trying to get CentOS/RHEL up and running for my home lab using Xen Technologies and need an advice in order to have a fully working Box, got any suggestions? which chipsets are the best out of the box for Centos AMD platform (AMD based, nVidia based, Ati Based)? mod_rewrite issue

I'm installing Drupal 6.2 in the document root of a CentOS 5 install using httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1. I'm using a virtual host entry with the following rewrite rule to enable "clean" URLs: RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [R,L,QSA] This works fine expect the user still sees the "ugly" URL in the address bar. However, if I remove the R, it breaks completely. Any clues? I can send more of my httpd.conf if you think it'll help. much thanks, Gary

Finding module name for SCSI host adapter for a given SCSI target

Given a path to a SCSI device, e.g. "DEV=/dev/st1", I need to find the name of the kernel module for the SCSI host adapter that controls that target. The objective is to be able to unload and reload the kernel module when the drive gets into a state that requires a SCSI bus reset for recovery. The best I've been able to come up with so far is: SCSIMOD=$(cat /sys/class/scsi_tape/${DEV##*/}/device/../../scsi_host:host*/proc_name) Anyone know of a way that is a bit less convoluted? -- Bob Nichols "NOSPAM" is really part of my email address. CentOS 64bits can't boot

Hello all, I got this tiny problem, I bought an Asus m2n-vm hdmi mobo two weeks ago and it seems not to be fully working under centos amd64(4.6, 4.9, 5.0, 5.1) or even redhat EL 5.0 i386, amd64, I tried to install centos and redhat EL using the linux dd and linux noprobe commands to load driver disk from nVidia guys but it doesn't detect the HD I'm using their diferent versions of the driver RHEL 4_U5, 4_U6 , 5, 5_U1 , then if I change the IDE config in the BIOS from SATA to AHCI, it detects the SATA HD during the install process, but when it boots up, it tells me to "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key", but nothing happens...then I change the BIOS IDE setting back to SATA, and it boots but it gives me a kernel panic saying "could not mount such file system, not such file or directory", it doesn't load up the drivers at the linux noprobe way, nor even the forcedeth or the sata_nv. I read in ubuntu and fedora forums that they're supported in Ubuntu 7.04, 7.10, 8.04 and Fedora 7, 8, 9, haven't test them yet though, I want to stick with Centos bcos thats my working enviroment. What can I do? Here are my specs: Asus msn-vm hdmi Chipset Nvidia GeForce7050PV/nForce630a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800 2.5Ghz Dual core 6Gb RAM Kingston 250 HDD SATA2 LG IDE DVD-ROM I'm trying to use this setup in my home lab to test out Xen technology and techniques. cheers, Victor. CentOS-Samba question

My main system is a CentOS 5.1 64-bit desktop with gobs of disk and a couple of printers attached that work just fine. I have it set up with samba so my VMWare guest Windows XP can access most of the files and the printers. But, when I try to connect to the printers from a remote machine that has a Win98/WinXP dual boot, I can't see the printers at all. Both 98/XP can ping the host by IP address or by name (I've updated the host on both and the lmhost file on the 98 boot), but the 98 boot can't see the network at all, and the XP boot can't see anything on my CentOS box, although it at least sees that the box is there. Asus M3A78-EMH HDMI NCQ-issues

Hi all, I'm sure this eventually will be resolved with a BIOS or kernel update, but in case someone experiences this on this or a similar motherboard, I thought I'd post a problem-and-workaround report. Platform CentOS5, x86_64 kernel-2.6.18-53.1.21.el5 Motherboard Asus M3a78-EMH HDMI SATA-controller configured as AHCI Experienced symptom; Periodic, ~20s lockups/freezes, several a day, in conjunction with disk (SATA) I/O. Kernel logs something like this; ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x1 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen ata3.00: cmd 61/08:00:71:18:7d/00:00:02:00:00/40 tag 0 cdb 0x0 data 4096 out res 40/00:00:00:4f:c2/00:00:00:4f:c2/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout) ata3: soft resetting port ata3: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300) ata3.00: configured for UDMA/133 ata3: EH complete SCSI device sdc: 234441648 512-byte hdwr sectors (120034 MB) sdc: Write Protect is off sdc: Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 SCSI device sdc: drive cache: write back (on a side note, the system has 6 SATA disks, the older ST3120827AS Seagate-disk here exhibits this significantly more often than the others, but they too are affected) From other sources this is reported as a AHCI NCQ bug. My workaround, which was suggested somewhere else, was to disable NCQ; (in rc.local) for D in sd{a,b,c,d,e,f} ; do echo 1 > /sys/block/$a/device/queue_depth done This resolves the above issue, and from several times an hour, I have not experienced it since (~30h). FW: Partitioning help

Hi, I have Centos server 4.5 with 3.3TB raid disk on a 3 ware controller. Now the problem is that I am not able to see the partition in full since it shows only 1.2TB. I have created a partition with Parted and (GNU PARTED) and I have seen it is 3.3 T there. However I have to make this partition on ext3 with make2efs j /dev/sda1 and after the formatting it went to 1.2T. Could someone help me to address this issue by suggesting a proper partitioning utility which does this for me?. It is a production server on which 2 hdd had been failed and I need to make it up and running ASAP. Any suggestion and help would be really appreciated. Regards, Rajeev R. Veedu

Hi all, Advance apologies for being slightly OT. Has anyone had successes with installing gphpedit on CentOS 5? There don't seem to be any rpms avail for our distro and I'm far too new to roll my own. Thanks in advance (off - list replies are welcome if that's more appropriate) -Ray

Booting Diskless Workstations

I made a post in the Fedora list that didn't yield much help regarding this. I need to use a CentOS5.1 server to remotely boot a few Fedora 9 workstations. I have the option of using straight PXE, or even reflashing gPXE to the LOM for the clients. What I am interested in knowing is the best approach to this. 1. Should I just do iSCSI backed diskless setups? Probably doesn't scale well. 2. I looked at ltsp, but I can't present a fc9 environment with a RH5.1 server? The workstations would be fairly stateless, I intended on redirecting home dirs to a persistent share that gets backed up. Any ideas I can look into would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, jlc

When yum tries to acces yjl repository, http://yellowjacketlinux.fileburst.com/yum/yjl/el5/i386/yjl-misc/repodata/r… it gets back Not Found The requested URL /yum/yjl/el5/i386/yjl-misc/repodata/repomd.xml was not found on this server. Few days ago everything was OK. This repository is needed for the gnumeric install on CentoOS 5.1. Is there an alternate repo available for the gnumeric ? Igor

To start I wish to that you for the swift response on this issue. I do not think that I would get such a quick response from a proprietary (closed-source) company. Open Source :-). To respond to one the comments about large file systems recommend you split it in several smaller (2-4TB) filesystems This is not feasible in many situations. In some situations 2-4TB is not even a reasonable starting point. A little background. I have been using RH from v2 to v9. and in v9 I did get an install ISO of RH9 that included XFS support. Way back then I used it on a 1.4TB PATA hardware raid 5 (A lot of disk for it time). The system is still operational with out any FS issues short of failed drives. Fixed with the hot spares on the system. in five years of operation the system has had one outage a maintenance reboot Less then 2min down). After RH9 I switched to Centos. The system that I am currently configuring with 7+ TB of storage is one of the smaller storage servers for our systems. Using the same configuration with more drives we are planning several 20TB+ systems. For the work we do a single file system over 100TB is not unreasonable. We will be replacing a 80TB SAN system based on StorNext with a Isilon system with 10G network connections. If there was a way to create a Linux (Centos) 100TB 500TB or larger clustered file system with the nodes connected via infiniband that was easily manageable with throughput that can support multiple 10Gbps Ethernet connections I would be very interested. hi, i have @server1.domain.com, #server2.domain.com, @server3.domain.com and @server4.domain.com and i distrib the e-mail users in that four servers for equal. 2 servers have: dovecot+sendmail+mailscanner+spamassassin+clamav+ssl/tls+squirrelmail and other two have: dovecot+postfix+amavisd+spamassassin+clamav+squirrelmail+ssl/tls, all this machine over https and firewall with drop rule for defect. ok, there more, i have one machine to receive e-mails and other machine to send e-mails. this is que question: i want have only one machine with https and squirrelmail (i have the machine) than the users can view the e-mails only with transparent one domain, per example, @domain.com. i do the method to send and receive e-mails by separate machine through the squirrelmail config but i don't know how i can do the transparent @domain.com ??? what is the name of this method or what is the idea than i can permit to resolve this problem... thank for all..ROberto.- -- Roberto Barrientos Molina Administración TIC 207153-207140-207109 UMAG NOTA: Los acentos han sido omitidos intencionalmente.-

I am having problems burning DVD's from commandline. I was wondering if anyone else has had any luck using cdrecord-2.01 and cdrtools that is supposed to add DVD support? recommendations/suggestions - geographically spread network based on Centos

Good day all, I was wondering if I could pick some admin heads here as I have a HUGE project I have been tasked with..... I am asking here since I will be basing everything on Centos, and want it to all play nice together. If anyone feels this is straying off topic, please just reply off list. I do not want to be the cause of one of those threads. I have 3 offices, 1 in Canada, 2 in Mexico. We are currently investigating connectivity options (still no results yet), but I suspect one of the mexican sites will be very limited. I need to setup the typical office setup, but need to get the following figured out. I personally do not have experience in this type of network (all my past experience comes from a centralized office, one location, or a multi office with services all based in their respective locations). So because The connectivity is probably limited (in our mexican offices), I will need to take that into consideration (obviously). Our head office has a 10mb full duplex fiber feed, but we also have equipment in data centers. What I need in the end is: - exchange like functions IE Global address book, shared calenders, etc (looking at scalix, or could keep my existing email server - very happy with it, and just setup a LDAP server and a CalDAV server - still investigating this one though). - Funambol with various connectors to push email and calendars to blackberries and iphones. - vpn (openvpn) - mostly just the head office though - collaborative / project management environment (looking at alfresco - sharepoint alternative) - monitoring (nagios) - helpdesk (glpi with ocs for inventory management) - file sharing (samba) - remote file backups (probably just rsync into a dedicated backup machine in a data center) - access to all services (probably - still waiting back from the higher ups) from all locations So my first thought is that my preference it to keep as much at a data center as possible due to security, temperature control, connection reliability, etc. Due to my inexperience with some of these products, (IE Scalix,etc) I am kind of wondering what the best way or topology is to do this is. So at a brief first thought I kind of envisioned this: - scalix, Funambol, alfresco, nagios (also one in my office as backup), backup box collocated in the data center providing it can be locked down adequately, and still provide the needed services to all 3 offices. - in each office a samba file server, vpn server. Due to the probable connectivity issue with the remote offices (one is literally in the desert at a work site), I did not think a constant inter-office VPN was the way to go, Or even securing the main data center services with VPN (unless I could build it right for speed). However I guess I could lock down the data center services with VPN, and create a constant connection between head office and the data center, and allow the other offices to connect via individual vpn connections as needed. Thoughts? Just looking for a general broad overview, or some software recommendations if anyone from experience has a recommendation that is possibly better than the software I had outlined here. I have one of those installed on CentOS 4.6 with 1TB of storage. I'm sharing it between three servers. I can't say how well it works for multi-TB storage, but it works well enough for me at 1TB. Our testing showed reasonable performance. You can get faster shared storage, but you'll be hard pressed to find it cheaper. The linux drivers are readily available from the Coraid website and they compile very easily on CentOS. -- Bowie

My networked printer has developed a fault and has to be returned to the manufacturer, so I have to go back to a usb printer attached to my file server. drbd strategy

I have an existing in-production LAMP server running Centos 5.1. It uses physical partitions on top of hardware RAID1, having / /home /var and /boot on separate partitions. We have a near-identical system I am thinking of bringing in as a DRBD/Heartbeat companion. One solution may be to use csync2 [http://oss.linbit.com/csync2/] on /etc and /usr/local (the only areas that will differ from the stock CentOS). Then setup DRBD for /home and /var. From reading the docs it seems we have to use "external meta data" on the existing partitions. Other than that, anyone have any caveats or better ideas for this setup? Also - each has 2 NICs. Can Heartbeat do its pinging over the WAN (eth0) with eth1 dedicated to DRBD only? Is that how it is supposed to be, or should we use the serial ports? Sam

sticky bit inside user's dir

Hello there, I have the following problem. I need a user not to be able to delete (rm -rf) a dir inside his home directory (a dir which is owned by him). The sticky bit is supposed to do just that... and it does, in every part of the file system but in his home. Same goes for acls (setfacl -m u:user:rx dir), a rm -rf inside his directory will render the acls useless. Is there any workaround against that?

External USB Hard Drive mount problems

Hi Folks I have a number of external USB enclosures with hard drives in. Some are IDE and others are SATA drives. I'm running CentOS 5 + all updates. Recently when I plug in an external drive I get the message "Invalid filesystem type. I have install the NTFS-3G bits stuff and reformatted the hard drives with FAT32 but still get the same error message. This started after an update (not shore which one,) as I had been able to copy files to / from these disks before. I have turned off selinux and had a look at my fstab file, but can't see any thing obvious. Can some one point me in the right direction to debug this please? Setting Group owner of files on USB drive

I just got a 8Gb flash drive and went to copy a bunch of files onto it. I wanted to perserve everything, so I just took my archiving rsync command and altered it to go to localhost:/media/RALLY2/ (name of flash drive). I am getting errors with changing the group owner. Huh? So I try to just use mkdir to create a directory on the flash drive. The directory has a group of root ??? So I try a chgrp and get: [root@mine me]# chgrp me /media/RALLY2/Stuff chgrp: changing group of `/media/RALLY2/Stuff': Operation not permitted OK why can't I set the group to something other than root? ls -lstr /media/ total 4 4 drwxr-xr-x 3 me root 4096 May 30 16:28 RALLY2 and of course for /media: 8 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 May 30 16:18 media

Hi All, I've a question on upgrading Centos with the least downtime... I've a centos 4.6 machine, hosting my local Centos respository. I'd like to upgrade the OS to 5.1 I've practised in a VMware machine upgrading it by booting from a CD, but I wondered if YUM could do it, whilst keeping the rest of the machine "alive". Am I better to shutdown and upgrade, or is yum really *that* good? Thanks, Adrian

Learning some sad things about the state of IPv6

We have kernel support for IPv6 in Centos, but not stateful firewall support. That requires at least the 2.6.20 kernel, which means Fedora Core 6 or some other Linux distro. None of the various free Linux firewalls have IPv6 support. Supposedly FWBuilder can manage Netfilters for a Linux Kernel, but that seems to be the extent of it. More sad facts as I uncover them.....

Low-memory Centos5?

Good morning, I've inherited an old laptop from my wife that I'd like to use when I travel (it's fairly small with a 12" screen). The bad part is that it is maxed out on memory with 384MB. Has anyone played with using Centos5 on systems with little memory? Ideally, I don't need too much - Firefox, Openoffice, a little Perl/Python/C here and there. I was thinking about using either XFCE or Icewm as the window manager. I'd also like it to work with the existing wireless card (Dlink DWL-G650). Any thoughts or recommendations? TIA! Jeff

Hello: I am planning to implement GFS for my university as a summer project. I have 10 servers each with SAN disks attached. I will be reading and writing many files for professor's research projects. Each file can be anywhere from 1k to 120GB (fluid dynamic research images). The 10 servers will be using NIC bonding (1GB/network). So, would GFS be ideal for this? I have been reading a lot about it and it seems like a perfect solution. Any thoughts? TIA

OK, so I need to bring up a new vm and was wondering what the state of vm kernels for centos. I have read this http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2189about the tick divider but it wasn't clear what the best step forward is for centos 5.1 was, i usually ran with the clocksource=pit option and it looked like that and the divider option caused a problem. I have in the past compiled my own but was wondering what others were now doing, thanks in advance 8-)

after this latest centos 5 kernel update, i am seeing 40 second delays on automount points. nothing in the rpm changelog looks obviously related to autofs and the autofs module seems to be the same as the previous kernel. i'm starting to do some strace'ing and other debugging, but nothing has jumped out at me yet. i'm hoping someone else has seen it so i know i'm not alone :-).

nfsnobody 65534 vs 4294967294

Hi, I just had a couple of questions about nfsnobody. We run a very large NFS infrastructure based off of a NetApp, and we're been discussing whether or not it is necessary to have 64 bit nfsnobody as 4294967294. I understand the reasoning behind this (2^32 - 2 gives you a max UID), but we're having issues since we run multiple architectures. The UID doesn't play nice across Solairs, Centos, 32 vs 64bit, etc. Are there any obvious security risks or problems with using nfsnobody as 65534 (2^16 - 2) on 64bit, or even just assigning it a random value, 300 for example? I can't see any particular reason for having such a high number other than to keep it above any possible real UID space. Also, the NetApp automatically generates quota tables based off of the highest UID, so obviously this is a *major* problem if suddenly we have billions of users as far as the NetApp is concerned. Ultimately, we'd like to just assign it a low value in the range with our other system account, but we are not sure of the potential risks with NFS etc. Any comments would be appreciated. We start to use centos 5 for our workstation at our site (University Innsbruck) and we use openafs to hold the home directories. There would be a big advantage to have the openafs kernel module (and the additional rpms) in the centos extras (or addons) repository with an automatic compile for the available kernels. PPPoE client help

Please point me in the right direction.... My ISP is giving me an IPv6 prefix, but to get that I have to: The current Speedstream ADSL router will be configured as a bridge. I will have to set up a Linux (read Centos, I hope) router that will connect ethernet to the Speedstream but run PPPoE to his network and get both the IPv4 and IPv6 route delegations. There is no easy way that I know of to test this ahead of time. I basically have to get the box configed, have my ISP switch the Speedstream to briding mode, and GO! So I need to do some reading....

Then i have done some changes in Linux but i am forgotten the changes. After some changes the Linux Boot-Up Progress bar "Show Details" Menu when i enable the Menu it will not shows the start-up services details. i had previously been having issues with automount being slow with this new kernel and i tracked it down to dns delays which were being caused by ipsec not working. i have spent a few hours poking around and ipsec seems quite broken with this new kernel. esp packets go in and out just fine, but when i look at ip xfrm stats on the machine with the new kernel, i see that for input packets, the ah layer is being processed just fine, but the esp layer is showing 0 bytes/packets and no errors. i can't find any errors or other indications of what is going on. is anyone else running a standard ipsec tunnel (using the standard ifcfg method for creating the tunnel) under this new kernel? i know that a new 5.2 kernel should be coming soon, but i worry that whatever broke this version may happen there as well.

The above page talks about removing packages after install to attain the small size. however, I am getting blocked at the install page about not enough room to install. All I have selected is the base package. nothing else. Is there a way to install "less thank" base... I tried to option off items in the base package but the last message I got was about 1044 was my packages size... Anyone have suggestions or have tried to install on a small device. THanks, Jerry

raw device change back to root after reboot

We are setup new DELL 6800 server fro Informix database. We create "raw" partitions and change "raw" partitions owner to "informix:informix". After reboot owner change back to "root". we don't have problem on CENTOS 3.X, but this problem happen on CENTOS 4.6. I double check "SELINUX" is "disable". does anyone know why it work on 3.X, but NOT on 4.6? do I need modify /etc/udev/permissions.d/50-udev.permissions? if "yes", anyone have sample? Problem accessing to Windows Terminal Server in load balancing.

Hi guys, I have this configuration: LAN -- LINUX BRIDGE -- LINUX BRIDGE -- TS The linux's bridges are for wifi purposes (2 centos machines) and is working fine. The problem I have is that the TS are 3 windows TS in load balancing configuration. There is 1 IP for general purposes and every TS has its own IP. For example, the configuration is: 192.168.0.1/24 TS1 192.168.0.2/24 TS2 192.168.0.3/24 TS3 192.168.0.10/24 (TS server IP for load balancing) The problem I encountered is that every PC into the LAN has access from the LAN to every TS (tested with ping), but them have no access to the IP for load balancing. I observed that all TSn IP's has their ARP entry in the ARP table, but the IP for load balancing not. How can I solve this problem at the bridge level? I think that there is something that the bridges are filtering and perhaps is because the TS load balancing software uses various "virtual macs" for the load balancing IP. Perhaps I must change any /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/<dev>/ file to bypass this filter, I'm thinking in "arp_ignore", put a "1" into it, but is a production environment and I don't want to loss the access to the devices. Any help?

How to move my MBR

I removed an ATA drive (/home) for a new SATA and my system would not boot. I'm guessing that it put the MBR on that drive instead of the drive that holds the / partition. What's the best way confirm where the MBR resides and, after I verify that's my problem, how I can move (or make a copy) onto a different drive? Thanks, Scott

Hi, I'm running Centos 5.1 on an Intel Quad 2 Core with four Q6600 processors. Despite Centos 5 supporting multiple cores (SPM), it doesn't seem to work for me: 1) a dmesg shows that only one processor is seen: "SPM alternatives: switching to UP code", etc. 2) file /proc/cpuinfo shows only one processor 3) top with option 1 (to toggle between seeing all processors or an average) shows only 1 processor. I've googled this, and other people have found this kind of trouble, but I was not able to find any solutions. By the way: I've installed windows xp to see if it was a bios problem, but windows sees the 4 processors just fine. Any ideas? Thanks, Julian.

Dear All, I come from FreeBSD world. This is my first time setting up a CentOS on my laptop Dell Vostro 1400 with intel 965GM chipset. I am having problem here and need your help. I have 5.1 release installed. I have trouble to get 1280x800 resolution. The driver used is I810. I don't know if the chipset is too new for the xorg driver, and can anyone tell me if there is a fix, maybe with 915resolution? Any information is helpful. Thanks here in advance. -Chen

simple load balancing/failover for OWA

We are building an exchange cluster with two front end Outlook Web Access servers. We would like to at least have some sort of failover, and prefereably load balancing for them. The MS recommended way is to use NLB, but for various reasons that's not working with our set up. We are looking to set up a single linux server and use something like LVS to load balance/fail over the connections. Looking at LVS, it looks like it hasn't been updated in a while. Is it stable? Is it still the preferred solution? Since OWA has sessions, but no session replication, we would need something that can keep directing the same client to the same server (either by IP, or preferably by cookie). Can LVS handle this? I also saw that the latest version of Apache has some sort of load balancing support. Can it be used to set something like this up? We are looking for the simplest solution that won't require a lot of maintanence. We understand that having a single LVS box creates a single point of failure, and are willing to accept the risk for now to keep things simpler. Russ

memorial day kernel panic

I have a simple Tyan server with RAID1 on a 3ware 7002 that has been running updated Centos 5.1 for almost 3 weeks with no problem, it runs low-traffic Apache/PHP/mySQL and vsftpd sites exclusively - last night it crashed. The console showed something about a process named 'php' and gave a process id with the panic message, but that's all I can remember. Hard-rebooted and all was well... Then about 55 minutes later I was logged in with ssh and it froze. Another fun holiday trip back to the datacenter. This time I brought a camera, but found a message totally different - this seems more like a ext3/disk problem? http://www.flickr.com/photos/sbeam/2525251590/sizes/l/ the logs contain nothing unusual. I have set up a script to do a vmstat/ps dump every 10 minutes. Anything else advised by this kernel dump or places to look? Thanks much- Sam

USB modem on centos

I am playing with a USR (us robotics) USB modem model 5637. in the past I used internal modems and had no issues. One this unit I plugged it in, dmesg says its recogized. I did "ln -s /dev/ttyACM0 /dev/ttyS4" this works. I then did "cu -l /dev/ttyS4" type "AT" and I get OK... looking good. When I "ATDT my number" I get a connection at 1200 baud (which I should) and funny characters... I thought looks like a parity thing. I then did "cu -e -l /dev/ttyS4" type "AT" and I get OK... Now when I do "ATDT my number" I get a connection at 1200 baud and I get readable characters. In the past internal PCI modems I never had to do anything special, just the cu -l /dev/ttyS4. I thought modem to modem handled all that speed/parity stuff and computer to modem just always worked given the correct baud rate. Does anyone know what the issue might be here. The reason I am asking is my program that talks to the modems (computer to modem) has always been setup for 8 data no parity and has always worked. When I use my program on the USB modem it is not working and I assumed from the parity issue above using "cu" to demonstrate. When I change my program to be 7 data bits and even parity it still did not work. Was wondering if anyone had any USB modem experience on centos and might know what is going on? Thanks, Jerry

hello all: I want to install ModSecurity v2.5.4 in my system. I do the following setup to install the lua tar -xzvf lua-5.1.3.tar.gz cd lua-5.1.3/src make linux cd .. make install The ModSecurity ask me to add "LoadFile /usr/lib/liblua5.1.so" to the http.conf,but there is no liblua5.1.so in /usr/lib. I have search it and i didn't find the solution. Can any one tell me why there is no liblua5.1.so in /usr/lib Thanks for any reply.

clustered mail server?

Hi all I'm looking for a working HOWTO / Tutorial / sample setup of setting up a clustered email server. I know I can setup a CentOS cluster with Heartbeat & drbd, but I'm not 100% convinced it will work for the email as well. Ideally, I'd like to use an open source groupware server, like say open exchange, php groupware, Scalix (free / community version), etc. So, if anyone can please point me in the right direction? Xen tools

I have been playing around with Citrix XenServer Express. It seems pretty cool, and mostly meets my needs, except that the Express (Free) version only supports up to 4GB of RAM. I have 8GB on my machines. Since XenServer is based on Xen, I should be able to just install a base install of CentOS and use a third party management client to get all (most?) of the functionality of the XenServer without having to be limited to 4GB of RAM. Can someone recommend tools that I can use to manage the Xen hosts? I see there is Ganeti, but that seems to be linux only. I would prefer a windows or a web client, as I intend to have the actual Xen hosts be as stripped down installation as possible. As far as being able to utilize 8GB in CentOS do I need to install the x86_64 version, or is there some sort of AWE support? I remember reading that x86_64 version has some compatibility issues. I actually found a memory testing system for around $4K, yes it's about the cost of a well equiped server, but if it works well it should earn it's keep pretty quick. It's called RAMCHECK, I priced out the DDR/DDR2 unit, but there is add-ons for SODIMM, SDRAM, EDO, if you got it fully loaded I suspect it would be around $5K. Hi all, I have problems on one CentOS 4.6 with slapd. Namely, after trying to start it (via /etc/init.d/ldap start) it waits for very long in configuration check. Interestingly, when I try to start it manually, but without "-u ldap" option it starts immediately. What puzzles me more is the use of NETLINK socket when started with -u option that doesn't appear in strace output without using the option. I did grep through the source of the openldap for NETLINK but nothing was found. Can someone shed some lite on what's happening? Thanks, Stjepan

I have a dual homed server in an install for someone who is very cost sensitive. This server originally is being setup as an Asterisk server, but now the simplest thing for me to do is also set it up to provide internet access for the small shop as well. So it will have one external, WAN facing nic that needs all incoming ports except UDP 5060 and 10000 -> 60000 blocked for all but two ips. The internal, LAN facing NIC will need all ports except voip/dns/http blocked to it, and need to provide masquerading. I have limited experience with iptables and would love some guidelines. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, jlc

I have 12 750GB drive appliance from HP. I was wondering what is the best disk configuration? I suppose a large RAID5 would be bad since rebuilding would take too long. What do you recommend? TIA

So, it's somekind of Live CD on a disk? I can't think of a practical benefit of using such system, is it to protect it from unwanted modification? One reason is for ease of maintenance, especially when there are many systems to maintain. You might be administering computers in a classroom, internet access point, or library and you want to be certain that after reboot, the system is exactly as it was the last time it was rebooted, even if the users mess with the system accidentally or on purpose. For example, if a user fills up the /tmp filesystem and causes the system to crash, after booting, the system will have an empty /tmp filesystem. It will not require that fsck to be run because the other filesystems were mounted read-only. This implies no risk of filesystem corruption (except due to physical failures on the disk). Not needing fsck saves time on boot. You could use read-only root on embedded systems where there is no way an administrator could get to the system to fix it. Read-only root is beneficial on a system running on flash media because this avoids having recurring writes wear out some sectors on the media. This is a practical way to run a large group of diskless systems. A single read-only root filesystem can be made available on a network from an NFS server. Many diskless clients can use this readonly-root simultaneously. Of course, this is a way to implement a live CD. In addition to easy maintenance, readonly-root adds a layer of security. The security is broken if someone gains access to the root user, but then many security protections are lost if someone gains root. Even a Database server can benefit from being run on read-only root. The data disk would certainly be mounted read-write, but there is no reason why the operating system and database application software need to be on disks mounted read-write. When an administrator wants to perform an update, upgrade, software, installation. or other system change, the administrator sets the readonly filesystems to read-write using a simple mount command. After the administrator finishes making the changes, a simple mount command (or reboot) sets the readonly filesystems back to read-only. COBOL

Just curious, maybe some old timers could help me out. I am working with a company that is migrating 20 years of Mainframe Software Development to Unix, HPUX. How much harder would it be to go to Linux, Centos Linux? Also, anyone have any experience with Fujitsu Cobol on Centos? The Fujitsu people only support Red Hat, and said I'd be on my own with Centos. In other words if it works, then I don't care about Fujitsu support. I know some of you are thinking, did someone say "COBOL"? Nobody uses COBOL anymore! If so, let me say "You are wrong". Many large corporations are taking their old business logic that was written in COBOL decades ago, and moving it to new modern platforms, like Linux. Programatically giving these applications a GUI face-lift, while maintaining their original business logic. I know because many companies pay me to do just that. I have a client that wants to use Centos Linux with Fujistu Cobol, and Fujitsu says it's gotta be Red Hat, any help will much appreciated. RAID5 or RAID50 for database?

we have DELL 6800 server with 12 internal disks in it. O.S. is CENTOS 4.6 and SCSI control card is PERC 4e/di. We plan to configure 4 disks (5,8,9,10) as RAID5 or RAID50. 1333/8GB Intel motherboard for C5.1

Hi there, has anyone run into any Desktop/Workstation Intel brand motherboards that work with CentOS 5.1 (4.6/3.9 out of box compatibility is a very large plus) and work with the 1333MHZ cpus such as the 8400/9450 and accept 8GB of RAM? The closest we've found so far is the DG31PR which is alright but it has the limitation of 4GB of RAM and an unsupported Realtek NIC. The DQ35JO is also ok, but requires quite a bit of 'jostling' to get to work such as pci=nommconf and other tweaks, we need something that will work out of box, anyone found anything recently? cups causing segfault

Everyone, I have a new installation of Centos 5.1 that I am using on a gateway server that also has dhcp, named servers. I also have cups set up to function as a print server, and sendmail is being used as a relay to our mail server. yum-cron appears to be updating everything daily as desired. This Centos 5.1 gateway was created to replace a Fedora Core 5 system with the same functions. When I set up cups I copied the FC5 subdirectory into the Centos 5.1 system. Everything appears to work as expected. For some reason I am having sendmail crator without giving me a notice in the logs as far as I can determine. However, when I looked at the messages logs I found it filled with many entries in the form of : kernel: ipp[24519]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 00002aaaabf2abc0 rsp 00007fff25495348 error 4 I've done a google search and there appeared to be a problem with doubled printer entries in the printer.conf causing the log entry, but after checking my printer.conf file everything appears to be ok. This file also worked on FC5 without a problem. I am not sure if the cups problem is related to the sendmail problem. Any ideas? Greg Ennis

To be honest I have no idea what is needed by the kernel for the bios to beable to check that the os is responding correctly. I enabled it on a test server and had the same issue on a default 4.6 cent install. I could have the name in the bios (the service ) incorrect ie, watch guard,watch dog , watch "something" I know it is psent on serval types of motherboad manufactures. Take a look should be easy to find
