HTTP blocked?

I just installed CentOS 5 and put ZoneMinder on it. Everything seems to be working fine, except I can't access the web pages from a remote computer, even if it's on the same LAN. If I lynx to the webpage from the server itself the web page comes up. I checked iptables and there doesn't seem to be any block there. There is no firewall within my LAN that would block port 80. Any other ideas? Thanks

[Request] Slurm

Printer Configuration

There used to be a CUI tool to configure printers from a server without X running. Is there still that tool but renamed to something else? Or do you have to use VNC and X to remotely configure printers starting with 5.x?

new CentOS5.1, samba help requested

Hi all, I'm fighting with samba on a new CentOS 5.1 install. The goal here is to have unix/linux usernames/passwords used for the samba shares (which i'll setup using webmin, as I find it easy that way). At present, the home share and one for the company's public share are in place. I can see the server, browsing from WinXP to \\172.16.0.106, but permissions seem amiss. I should be able to read/write to a given share but it seems to be ro. Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated. portmap not answering

CentOS 5 updated, Xen host. The portmap on this machine is somehow "stuck" and I can't figure out why. I enabled it to be able to mount a remote nfs share. The first hurdle was that "portmap" didn't appear in the chkconfig list, it was installed with the initial packages but not added to chkconfig. Took me a while to figure this out. Adding and starting it up is no problem. But nfs still doesn't work and when I try rpcinfo -p that just hangs until it finally times out after a long while (rpcinfo to another machine is fine). An strace at that time indeed shows that it is stuck trying to connect to port 111 on localhost. Same when I try to connect with telnet. Port 111 shows up on lsof UDP and TCP and there's no error when portmap starts up. There's nothing in iptables or hosts.deny that could prevent a connect. SELinux is permissive. how do I create a custom CD from an existing CD?

Hi all This may sound funny, but I can't get onto any websites right now, so I can't even google. I want to customize the contents of my CentOS 5.1 x64 CD, and re-create the ISO to write to CD again and install on a server. Commands failing silently?

Hello all: I have a couple CentOS 4 servers (all up-to-date) that are having strange command failures. I first noticed this with a perl script that uses lots of system calls. It also doesn't seem to matter what the command is -- ls is the quickest test, but sshd will sometimes to fail to spawn children, etc. There aren't a large amount of processes on the machine either -- only 122 at the moment. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Have I been hit with some sort of cunning rootkit? This machine shouldn't be publicly accessible; it's behind our firewall. Should I update to DRBD 82?

Hello, This morning I noticed the following output from "yum update": Installing: drbd82 x86_64 8.2.5-1.el5.centos extras 209 k replacing drbd.x86_64 8.0.11-1.el5.centos As far as I'm aware DRBD works fine for me. Is there a way I can find out about the new release and weather I should upgrade? I can't figure out the CentOS issue tracking system at bugs.centos.org but a google site search came up with http://bugs.centos.org/print_bug_page.php?bug_id=2657 (a DRBD 82 tracker bug with empty reports), which makes me feel like this version of the package is not 100% trusted. So - should I upgrade it or not? Generally, I try to stick to the "standard" as much as I can, but the text in http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories gives an impression that "if it's in Extras, it's well tested". Thanks, --Amos

Anyone still uses "MO drive"?

Hi all, I'm trying to use an old MO drive in Centos5.0. It's connected to an adaptec scsi card. From dmesg, the card seems to be recognized, but it doesn't "create" the sda device from the MO drive. Is there any more steps I must do? From Yahoo search (since it has older archive than google), it seems that Linux should be automatically recognize and setting up the scsi card and the MO drive. So, I'm clueless here. Any pointer is great. I just migrated my working Fedora Core 8 desktop to CentOS 5.1 and went from my nice 1680x1050 resolution to 1280x1024. I have made all the possible xorg.conf changes I found on the net to no avail. I tried system-config-display –reconfig and it allows me to pick the resolution but reverts back to 1280x1024 in X? Anyone know what might need to be done in CentOS for this to work? The skewed aspect ratio drives me nuts☺ Thanks! jlc

Two Internet connections...

I do some occasional tech work for a cable TV/Internet service provider. They have now offered me free services, including cable Internet. I currently have a DSL service through the telephone company and, for several reasons including the fact that it is really unlimited service with no cap and it comes with newsgroup access (neither of which the cable service has), I'm not really prepared to give that up. However, since I can get a free cable Internet service too I would like to be able to put that to use. Does anyone have any good ideas for what to do with an extra cable Internet service? Hello, I have a machine that seemed to reboot by itself yesterday, in /var/log/messages I only see: Mar 25 14:26:45 asterisk shutdown[19256]: shutting down for system reboot When I type: last reboot I see: reboot system boot 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5 Tue Mar 25 14:28 (18:41) So it seems like the kernel rebooted, but I'm not sure how I can track down why, any pointers? yum: removing Java group fails

I did a "yum groupremove Java" and that failed "somehow". Yum listed all group members as "erased", but some rpm packages failed because of missing config files or so. As a result none of the 50 packages were removed from the rpm database, but all of their files seem to have been removed. How can I clean them out from the rpm db? Automount CIFS share in CentOS 5.1

I am looking online trying to find a procedure to automount a CIFS share but need to use username/domain/pass in the credential file thats referenced in fstab. Its not working, anyone know of a resource that works in CentOS5.1? If it matters, the unc has a dash and a $ in it, and the password has special characters in it. Thanks! jlc

Check if you allow write access to snmp and from whom. NTFS-3G Support for CentOS 5.1 Live

I have been trying to mount my NTFS hard disk using the CentOS 5.1 Live USB pendrive I created from the LiveCD. I did an "fdisk-l" and see the partition as /dev/sdb1, but when I try to mount it, I get an error stating that NTFS is an unknown filesystem type. I attempted to install the ntfs-3g and fuse rpms, without any success (there were numerous dependancies and could not get libc to install).. Has anyone been able to successfully RW mount an NTFS filesystem using an USB install, if its even possible, that is? If not, are there any plans to include NTFS-3G support in the next release of the Live CD? Thanks! Mark

Tape Drive and Bacula issue

I posted this in the Bacula list without success so I hope I might have some luck here. Btape and mt can access my DDS-3 Seagate Archive Python 06480-xxx tape drive but Bacula tray-mon ends up finally stating that it cannot open device /dev/nst0? That is the device string that I use to access the drive, oddly enough it also suggest the SD could not open the one file based storage location I have either, yet I can Label new media and I see it appears in the directory? I installed from RPM's. Anyone got any ideas or pointers they could suggest? Thanks! jlc

AltGr over vnc not working

I notice that when I connect from a Windows VNC client (any VNC distribution it seems) to the Centos desktop (Gnome) I cannot send AltGr key combinations. The vncserver on the CentOS side is vino from Gnome. I cannot check if the same happens when connecting from a CentOS machine to a CentOS machine, but it looks more like Gnome simply ignores AltGr when sent over VNC. Why would it do this? Rejecting valid mail (including this mailing list)

Recently, I added the below line to my sendmail.mc and rebuilt. Everything was working just fine until sometime today. In looking over the maillog, it seems if almost every piece of mail was rejected because of this configuration - mail that I know is OK, valid, and not a source of spam, like tamu.edu. Not only that, but the mailing list from centos was being rejected as well. Anyone know what might be happening? One link I ran across said that ordb.org went out of business or stopped their service in Dec of '06. Hi, i want to know - how synchronization mailinglist <----> news works . I can set a name of a news group for mailinglist in mailman. Is it all that is necessary to do? I do understand one way - from mailman to news server, but what about the other side? How can i achieve it? Hope it is understable ... Mailman + INN My next question talks about INN f and pam authentification (pam ldap). Am i able to configure access to particular groups for particular users? Of course I did not erase them, but if it finds them to be installed, why does it say they are missing during an update attempt? I have a virus and spam filter device that can do VRFY commands to reject invalid email before it gets to the next mail hop. How can I configure the SMTP server to only allow VRFY commands from one particular IP address, and nowhere else? I don't want spammers to be able to hammer on the gateway looking for valid addresses to send to.

question about network repositories

Hi I'm thinking about setting up a local / LAN respository for my CentOS, and probably other (Fedora Core) disto's, but have never done it before, so here's some questions: If I setup a repository, can it hold different distro's / architectures & versions? Say for example, CentOS 4 (i386 & x64), CentOS 5.0 & 5.1 (i386 & x64) - will each one have it's own folder? Will it also be possible to only download the packages that are needed, instead of the whole 4GB repository from the upstream provider? I have some of the CD's or DVD's for all of the distro's, so really only need a few packages now and then, and instead of getting them from the net everytime, get them from the LAN repository? CentOS 5.1 Live USB NTFS Support

First of all, I was able to use the 5.1 LiveCD to create a bootable USB (8G Lexar FireFly) - thanks to all for your assistance. Question - has anyone been able to add NTFS support to an USB install? It would be a nice to have the ability to access NTFS (and Vista for that matter) disks for troubleshooting and general access. Any and all comments will be appreciated. Thanks! Mark

Strange Xen problem

I have a strange problem when using Centos: When using a Xen kernel (it does not matter whether a guest is started or not) networking fails is flakey. ssl connections fail, ping reports a wrong data byte #50 ..... I am using a Sun quad ethernet card, but when I tried the gigabit Ethernet on the motherboard, I do not get the error reports from ping, but many missing replies instead. The behaviour is somewhat intermittent. But now I am using a non-Xen kernel I have no problems. there is nothing logged in /var/log/messages. I had to patch the kernel due to some missing initialisation in the sun hme driver, but as said above there are errors on other cards as well. I am probably overlooking something obvious, but hours of googling have not given any results. Any hints anybody? Louis

Hello all, I'm getting frustrated attempting to understand; I googled and asked folks and am unable to get a straight answer. 1. How is the /etc/resolv.conf file maintained ? I do not seem to get a consistent result when I save resolv.conf configuration from GUI or by hand using vim /etc/resolv.conf. a. Hello all, I am trying to configure a subdomain DNS server on a Cent OS 5.1 - for my lab. Brief configuration: Lab machine ---> 192.168.17.2 (should respond to DNS queries from hosts in 192.168.16.0/20 network) 1. I would also like to forward any queries outside the above network to our corporate domain (no firewalls between our 192.168.16.x network and the corporate network. The domain server is: dns.company.com with an IP of 10.100.1.2 (255.255.255.0). 2. What I have configured is: 192.168.17.2 --> myhost.lab.company.com 10.100.1.2 --> dns.company.com 3. Installed the dns bind 9 in myhost and set basic configuration via the system-config-bind GUI. Hi all, One of our servers (very old) died last week and I'm setting up a new CentOS 5.1 box to replace it. Primarily used as a samba fileshare on a mostly windows-workstation network. This system will, ideally, have the OS on a 146 GB SCSI drive, with user data on a 300GB SCSI, both attached to the backplane of the 4600. My question is this: What's best practice and most desirable partitioning for doing this, and how would I go about setting up mirrors of both the OS and the user data drives? C5 krb5 updates do not get applied

Hi, the latest Centos 5 krb5 1.6.1-17.el5_1.1 do not get applied to any of my servers. I can see the updates being available on the mirror servers, but "yum update" shows nothing. The krb5 updates for Centos 4 were installed on all of my Centos 4 servers without any problem. Does somebody have any idea what could cause the problem on Centos 5? Thanks in advance, Bernd.

Hi, I have two 320 GB SATA disks (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb) in a server running CentOS release 5. They both have three partitions setup as RAID1 using md (boot, swap, and an LVM data partition). # cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [raid1] md0 : active raid1 sdb1[1] sda1[0] 104320 blocks [2/2] [UU] md1 : active raid1 sdb2[1] sda2[0] 4192896 blocks [2/2] [UU] md2 : active raid1 sdb3[1] sda3[0] 308271168 blocks [2/2] [UU] When I do tests though, I find that the md raid1 read performance is no better than either of the two disks on their own # hdparm -tT /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3 /dev/md2 /dev/sda3: Timing cached reads: 4160 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2080.92 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 234 MB in 3.02 seconds = 77.37 MB/sec /dev/sdb3: Timing cached reads: 4148 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2074.01 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 236 MB in 3.01 seconds = 78.46 MB/sec /dev/md2: Timing cached reads: 4128 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2064.04 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 230 MB in 3.02 seconds = 76.17 MB/sec If I fail and remove one of the disks in /dev/md2: # mdadm /dev/md2 -f /dev/sda3 # mdadm /dev/md2 -r /dev/sda3 # cat /proc/mdstat ... md2 : active raid1 sdb3[1] 308271168 blocks [2/1] [_U] # hdparm -tT /dev/md2 /dev/md2: Timing cached reads: 4184 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2092.65 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 240 MB in 3.01 seconds = 79.70 MB/sec So with only one disk in the array the performance is pretty much the same. At first I thought maybe the bottleneck is the SATA controller, but if I do simultaneous reads from both disks: # mkfifo /tmp/sync # cat /tmp/sync; hdparm -tT /dev/sda3 (and in another terminal, to make sure they start simultaneously) # > /tmp/sync; hdparm -tT /dev/sdb3 /dev/sda3: Timing cached reads: 2248 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1123.83 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 234 MB in 3.00 seconds = 77.91 MB/sec /dev/sdb3: Timing cached reads: 2248 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1123.74 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 236 MB in 3.01 seconds = 78.30 MB/sec So the total cached read bandwidth seems limited to about 2250 MB/s, which is slightly higher than the cache read bandwidth for /dev/md2, but I'm not too worried about that. More concerning is that I am still getting ~80MB/s from each disk simultaneously on the buffered reads. Given this I would expect /dev/md2 to give buffered read speeds of at least 120MB/s (if not 150MB/s). What can I do to track down this issue? Any help would be really appreciated. PHP Segfaults on Centos 5 and PBX in a Flash but not Trixbox

Hi Guys, Any known reasons why PHP 5 (Centos 5) might be segfaulting on an Asus A7V8X mobo with an Athlon 2400XP (1GB RAM). Everything else works fine and I had done some system/RAM tests so I am pretty sure the hardware's OK. Here's what I have found: Vanilla CentOS 5 - PHP segfaults yum remove/install PHP on above - PHP segfaults PBX in a Flash iso (based on CentOS5) - PHP segfaults Latest Trixbox (CentOS 5) iso (PHP 5.2.2-3) - OK I wonder if it may be down to compiler or optimisation flags. Bootable RHES CD

I am using Sonic Digital Media Plus v7, on Windows, and I'm trying to make a bootable RHEL IA 64 bit CD (mostly so I can include a kickstart file). So what I did is I grabbed the disk one ISO file, copied the contents on my hard drive in a folder. Then I clicked on the Data -> Data Disk. I then clicked on the "Add Data" button and when the "Select files and folders to add" box popped up, I selected all the files and folders and clicked on "Add". The window showed all the files. I then pressed "Make bootable" and selected the file, boot.img in the Images folder. I then burned all this onto a CD-R. I still can't boot off of this CD. Any hints? I've done this with CentOS, a long time ago, but maybe I'm missing something. === Al

CUPS gone wrong?

Did something change since (at least) CentOS 5.1, kernel 2.6.18-53.1.4 that would affect the CUPS printing system? I am no longer able to connect to it and that seems to be impacting my ability to use the newest unreleased beta version of SeaMonkey. (My standard release SeaMonkey, 1.1.8, works just fine, but I think that using CUPS is new in the 2.0 beta.) Any constructive input appreciated. mhr

Fedora user moving to CentOS

Greetings, I'm a Fedora user likely going to switch to CentOS in the next few days. I'm wondering if anyone has some heads up advice for me? I am very familiar with FC6 and before so I anticipate few problems I haven't already seen (and know were fixed). The main reason for the move is so I don't have to re-install so frequently and hopefully not have to deal with so many daily updates. I would use the 'upstream vendor' (respectfully), but I work under no IT $ budget.

There are lots of search hits out there for this yet I am wondering if I should be focusing on a certain glib area or in the application providing the error in the error logs - rh

Samba Fstab and Automount

Why am I getting a password prompt when the share has full RW access and all access is granted on the share? Note, though the share is fully visable and accessable and writeable by just browsing the network. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ok, now next up is automount. The Samba share will not auto mount on client either. ------------------------------------- /etc/auto.master /mnt/SAN /etc/auto.SAN -------------------------------------- /etc/auto.SAN machine_name -fstype=cifs,rw ://machine_name/SAN/ --------------------------------------- Anyone see anything wrong with the configuration? build custom kernel

Hi guys! i followed tutorial for building custom kernel for centos5 http://howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_centos with lastest kernel downloaded from kernel.org . in menuconfig i used /boot/config-(mycurrentcentoskernel) as a configuration. then i compiled with make rpm. Result was ok, but my kernel was about 400MB of size! :( Next problem was that alltought i we had ip_nat as a module selected in menuconfig, i did not had it, and i was not able to modprobe ip_nat , so my iptables were not working. I am looking for some help and experiences. Probably in thinks like : howto make new kernel for centos to be the most compatible (using /boot/config... probably). The reason why i need this is : - problem with pptpd on x64 centos 5.1 (causes freezing --- found that it is a kernel bug .. still not fixed in rhel - centos :( ) - problem with ath_pci (atheros module) which causes masine freezing after hours of use without any footprints in logs , tested that on fedora 8 this works stable :( Thanks in advance! The problem with the script is that it currently only works on SGI's. I haven't had a chance to try and find/build/install Linux/Open Source equivalents. On SGI's, there is one command to take a list of JPEG files and dump out a single Quick Time file.

We can set up the camera to automatically send image files to a server on a preset schedule and rate. With some home grown scripts, we convert the images to movie files for viewing. How to prevent installer using disk labels?

Is there any way, when installing CentOS (or any RH-based distro), to prevent it from using disk labels in /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/grub.conf, and to force it to just use the actual device names? For testing purposes, I am installing two different CentOS versions in different partitions, and am having to change from labels to device names by hand, and re-label the disks, in order to avoid the boot process getting confused between the filesystems. Move hard disk to a new machine

Intel SATA controller (cmiiw) not recognized by Centos 5.1 installation?

Hi, there, I tried to install Centos 5.1 on a Dell Inspiron 530 box I just bought, but failed due to invalid drive. The installation did not recognize either the DVD nor the hard disk. Joseph from the community said it is likely that Centos can't recognize the controller -- Intel SATA controller (cmiiw). Did anyone solve this problem before? How did you do it? mail_always fails in CentOS 5

I'm using the same sudoers file for all hosts. Out of 35 hosts, 14 are CentOS 5, the rest are CentOS 4. There are mixtures of MTA's on both platforms but the behavior is consistent. Here is the snip of my sudoers: Defaults mail_always Defaults mailto="mail(a)domain.com" Works fine in CentOS 4, doesn't even produce a blip in the maillog in CentOS 5 on all servers. Outbound mail tested and working on all boxes. Does anyone else see this behavior?

Incremental backups?

So I thought I'd get a head start for next week - I have a low-power Linux box that has a few samba shares mounted, and limited hard disk space. This box is connected to a tape library via SCSI card. I want to find the best way to create a full, then incremental backup of the samba mounts, directly to tape. Some of the samba mounts are appliances that cannot run any special client/agent. I'm looking at tar as an option, with its --incremental switch. Bacula uses a mysql database. I tried setting it up and it was not so easy, so I opted to use my time for other tasks. Same for Amanda. I would use dump, but samba connections are not device files. How about rsync? The tape library is LTO3 with hardware compression available. Google searching just now doesn't make rsync directly to tape too hopeful. What are the simplest options for incrementals based on date/time modified? Thanks. Scott

I was following the guide at https://projects.centos.org/trac/livecd/ to do this, and sure enough it claimed the partition wasn't bootable, so fdisk to toggle the flag bootable yet it still didn't boot. Any subtle nuance anyone might know to do this? Thanks! jlc

Server to server communication

Hi all, I have 2 servers online and wish them to communicate and exchange information with each other at times. I have been developing a web application which is extremely CPU-intensive, and since I don't want to overload the main server which deals with the apache/php/mysql stuff, I got a separate server (a phenom) to deal with it. I prefer the communication to be secure, low latency, scalable and two-way ie. either server can initiate communication with the other. As the number of users increase, I will need to add more quad-core servers. What would be the easiest/quickest-to-implement way to do this? Is there a daemon I could use to do this, or would I need to develop my own? Since I have only ever had a single server, I have never had to do this before, so wouldn't have a clue as to where to start. (I Googled "server communication" but got a pile of semi-useless links) TIA

How similar should my rpm build machine be to my target deploy machines? Like, do you have to build on a multi-core machine if you plan to run on a multi-core machine? Or as long as the arch is the same, nothing else matters? johnn

DRBD question.

I'm going to have to be a little vague on this one, but hope I provide enough to make the question clear. I'm not doing the work on this server, a co-worker is, but I said I would ask for him. He is trying to get DRBD installed. He's using Centos 5.1 and the yum repos, but is getting problems with things like the kernel, drbd.so, and the likes. All install fine, but I'm not sure he is getting the proper kernel with the drbd stuff. Almost sounds like he needs a dev rpm from somewhere because drbd.so isn't on the machine after installing the RPMs. (Can't do the insmod drbd.so). Does anyone have a quick and easy(?) step by step to get it installed? He'll figure out the config if he can get it installed properly. Right now, he's running from source OK, but you all know the arguements for source versus rpm. Thanks for any help. I'll try and get caught up on what he's doing to better answer any questions presented. Steve Campbell

Hi All, Anyone know of a CentOS 5 package for php-pear-SOAP? I'm installing Centreon, and that's the only pear package I have not been able to find packaged as a RPM for CentOS 5. Which sasl?

I'm trying to set up imap resources in kmail, and from the logs it looks as though I have to set up sasldb. I've found some documentation, but it seems that I need to know whether I'm using sasl or sasl2. How can I tell? I seem to have several packages installed that are returned with I query yum, and both versions get mentions. Anne
