Xvnc from tightvnc crashing

Hi all, I am having issues with running tightvnc-server on a CentOS 5.1 x86_64 machine (currently up-to-date, kernel 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5). Occasionally, the Xvnc instance will just crash, taking with it everything that I was running. When it crashes, it seems to do so when I try to open some GUI program. So, for instance, I click on a shortcut to open a program, and poof, it crashes. But it does not crash every time. At times it is usable for a long time. I believe tightvnc is available from rpmforge. $ rpm -qa | grep tightvnc tightvnc-server-1.3.9-1.el5.rf tightvnc-1.3.9-1.el5.rf Is anyone else using tightvnc? Is anyone having any trouble with it? Any ideas how to troubleshoot this? Disk partitions and LVM limits

Hi, I've got a DAS DELL MD1000 with a bunch of SATA drives in RAID 5 configuration with total space of 5.4TB. This box is attached to a CentOS5 system (kernel 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5). Any idea how to make this space usable? Is there a limit how big a partition can be? What is the work around? Is there a limit how big a file system ca be? I've tried to partition it but no matter how bug partition I create fdisk spits out these messages on the console: --- sdb: very big device. try to use READ CAPACITY(16). SCSI device sdb: 10248519680 512-byte hdwr sectors (5247242 MB) sdb: Write Protect is off --- I decided to not partition the drive and use LVM but the physical volume stopped at 2TB. So, right now I can't use LVM because of this 2TB limit and I'm not sure if I partition the drive how good these partitions are because of the the message from fdisk. Any help or idea is highly appreciated. Kernel compiling troubles (ABI checking)

Hi, I'm having a problem compiling the kernel as a normal user (don't know if not being root is the problem or not). What is ABI? I can compile with the flag --without kabichk, but I don't know if really is that the solution or not. nautilus quit

I have a client who emailed me earlier and said that his desktop is blank. The toolbar is present but all of his desktop shortcuts are gone and he has a black desktop. Reg. Kernel switching

Hi all, I am a newbie to linux and this is my first mail to this group. We have a PC running Centos version 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL. I needed to load a router software called Nistnet and it would not run properly. It is looking for RTC (Real Time clock) support as a module. I 've gone through the LKM Loadable Kernel module support under Documentation pages of Linux.org and did the following: located the kernel release: uname -r 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL next navigated to the /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-42.0.2.EL-i686 (this is where the kernel is located on this PC) then issued a make menuconfig command It took me to through the menu and under device drivers> character device drivers i chose the Real time clock support as a module. Then exited out of the menu and did make modules_install. Then rebooted. However, the PC while rebooting showed some messages like fast_rtc: lost around 26 interrupts at 8192Hz. this keeps on appearing on the screen for a while before reboot and after the system reboots, I see that at boot time, the ethernet interface does not come up. It gives the follwoing error: Device eth0 has a different MAC address than expected, ignoring. Also i get the following error messages : Cannot open /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.0.2.EL/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/ microcode.ko no such file or directory and cannot open lib/modules/2.6.9-42.0.2.EL/kernel/drivers/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.ko no such file or directory. if I do an updatedb command and then slocate microcode.ko, I still see it under this directory. However, if I navigate to the kernel directory under 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL , there is nothing under it. If i issue ls -al there are a totoal of 16 entries but I cant see them. Can any one please tell me how to revert back to the original configuration or to undo these changes? I have copied the config-2.6.9-42.0.-EL release from Centos site to the /boot thinking it would revert to the original default config. Then I rebooted the PC but I still get the error-Eth interface has a different MAC id than expected or unable to bring eth0 up. So, at the boot time, I am currently choosing the kernel version 2.6.9-32-EL. With this I am able to browse the Internet. But I want to make the version 2.6.9-42-EL up. Please some one help me!! Hi all, I am trying to install the PPPoe server rp-pppoe-3.8 from Roaring penguin on centos PC (Centos 4.3, Kernel release 2.6.9-34.EL) but not able to start it. When I start it it gives the error-- /etc/rc.d/init.d/pppoe status pppoe-status: Link is down (can't read pppd PID file /var/run/pppoe.conf-pppoe.pid.pppd) ror - /etc/rc.d/init.d/pppoe start Bringing up PPPoE link................TIMED OUT /usr/sbin/pppoe-start: line 191: 4703 Terminated $CONNECT "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1 [FAILED] Please let me know how to fix this. kickstart install NVIDIA binary driver

Hi all, I am wanting to add to my working kickstart post section grabbing the NVIDIA binary and installing it. I can grab the file thats not the problem. I can use the --x-module-path to pass to the binary installer... however, How do I get the correct module path, kernels are added the the yum update, and a new one comes along and wish to account for that. What is the correct way to know which path to provide to the installer. Process is in kickstart post: yum -u update copy NVIDIA binary init 3 install the NVIDIA binary with either the current kernel module path or if yum update grabbed a new kernel then use that module path.. Also is there anyway in the post section to do do a "CTRL+ALT+F3" Thanks, Jerry

Changing ext3 Partition Size

I have an ext3 partition from our SAN. The size was increased. I am attempting to re-size this specific ext3 partition, obviously. I unmount the partition, run fdisk, change the cyls, and save... WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 22: Invalid argument. The kernel still uses the old table. The new table will be used at the next reboot. And that is the message that I receive after I attempt the save. I did attempt a reboot to see if it did anything, but it did not help. Thanks, Scott

I tried a few of them. They didn't solve the problem, but they did help me find it. When I tried to run the install without LVM, I still got the same anaconda crash (referencing vgremove). I realized that anaconda was trying to remove the volume groups that already existed on the drives. Once I erased all of the partition information on the drives with fdisk, I was able to do a normal install with LVM. -- Bowie

Hi, I have a new mainboard with a Realtek RTL8111B / RTL8168B NIC. Security help desperately needed

I need to have the following services from my server: imap - mostly by lan, but occasionally external file and print serve samba access - read and write to some directories The problems I'm seeing are inconsistent, making it difficult to know how to find the source. Samba access is essential to me. I use a server-based korganizer, and without samba it's inaccessible. Sometimes it is working, sometimes it isn't. Last night, in desperation, I turned off selinux and the firewall so that I could finish a job, intending to get it sorted this morning. (There is a router firewall, so while security was diminished it was not totally absent.) This morning my laptop cannot make any samba connections at all. package 'synchronization' for multiple systems

I'm setting up multiple systems and ideally I want the same package configuration on all of them. So I'm going through yum and rpm queries manually to try and get this done. There must be a better way. Is there a way to use yum or rpm to configure multiple systems with the same packages? If yum or rpm has something native built into it to do this, that would be great. If there's some scripts to simplify some tasks that works too. I've used webmin's 'Cluster Software Package' module, and will probably fall back to it. However I don't think I get the info that yum gives regarding package grouping and what packages are part of what capabilities. Gotta query elsewhere for it. (no disrespect to webmin folks, great tool)

Centos 5.1 ext3 filesystem limit

Centos 5.1 documentation states that the supported ext3 filesystem limit is 16TB, yet I have a 9.5TB partition that is claimed to be too large: mke2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006) mke2fs: Filesystem too large. No more than 2**31-1 blocks (8TB using a blocksize of 4k) are currently supported. POSIX semaphores in CentOS 5.1?

According to the man pages for sem_wait, etc., POSIX semaphores are available in Linux 2.6 (with the right NTPL threading in glibc). However, I have a program that compiles just fine but won't link because it can't find the library for the semaphore operations. What am I missing? I ran a find and grep through all the libc's on the system and they turned up nothing: $ find /lib /usr/lib -name "*libc\.*" -print -exec nm {} 2>/dev/null \; | grep sem_ (no results) Time is critical (yeah, I know...). poppler-utils missing pdftoppm

A bit of Googling and I found where pdftoppm is supposed to be included with poppler-utils package. I check on my FC 7 system which is running poppler-utils poppler-utils-0.5.4-7.fc7, and pdftoppm is physically there and located in /usr/bin. I'm running CentOS 5 with poppler-utils-0.5.4-4.3.el5_1. Is this a bug? Or is this resolvable? Samba GUI interface

CentOS 5.1 I was just trying to add users and shares to Samba from GUI interface. I've already added users from command line. Regardless, when I go to select users the existing users is blank. When I add a user if it already exists I get a complaint that user exists. If I add a new user from GUI it does not get added to the blank list. OK I just added a user from gui, applied it [HIT OK] went back and tried to add user again but when hitting [OK] complained that user exists. Seems things are working except listing existing users in interface. I can live with this but I'm about to upgrade a server at work and ultimately I was hoping my Windows Sys Admin could manage to administrate Samba. I don't think this will be possible without a GUI.

Set hardware clock manually

I can't reboot a server to set the hardware clock to UTC time, but CentOS was installed with the assumption that the PC was running UTC. Is it possible to update the hardware clock to the right time and therefore allow CentOS to maintain the right time without rebooting? I am hoping to use this route for consistency versus changing how CentOS interprets the time so all servers are the same. Thanks! jlc

system smtp server question

If I have a production mailserver and a series of Linux servers that all develop mail from logging etc, it seems slightly redundant to have so many smtp servers installed on each of those boxes simply forwarding mail as I choose to not have local delivery. Is there a mechanism possible in CentOS to setup a pointer to a different mailserver such that programs like mailx could still send mail? Currently I have postfix setup with maps so that root on server A has mail sent from root(a)server-a.fqdn<mailto:root@server-a.fqdn> and that is relayed to my production box. It just seems like it is an additional service to manage on so many hosts? Thanks! jlc

64 bit and 32 bit are mixed up

Hello I have installed Centos 5.1 on 64 bit servers, and I see some of the packages have been installed two times, one for i386 and one for 64 bits. I don't know why i386 packages can be installed on 64 bit machine and why they should come together, even some times when I am searching yum repository , I see i386 and x64 packages. shouldn't the search result depend on server architecture ?

drbd82 RPMS for testing

All, There are drbd82 RPMS for CentOS-4 and CentOS-5 (i386 and x86_64) for testing here: http://people.centos.org/~hughesjr/drbd/ These are designed to be able to live in the same repository as the current STABLE versions. These RPMS are designed as CONFLICTS and not upgrades as there may be some manual actions to upgrade, especially on CentOS-4. Seamonkey (with plugins) as Firefox replacement?

Hi, I'm running CentOS 5.1 with the GNOME desktop in all our public libraries around here. I start from a minimal install stripped down to the bones, install X11, GNOME, and then one application per task. I try to follow some best-of-the-breed logic, and my focus lies on robustness to avoid the Tamagotchi syndrome :o) Recently I've been rather disappointed with Mozilla Firefox, which crashes more and more often (this has already been developed elsewhere on this list). On one of my machines, I'm running Slackware Linux 12.0, with an XFCE desktop and the latest Mozilla Seamonkey browser. This browser gives me entire satisfaction: light on RAM, fast, and (almost) never crashes. So the idea is simple: install Seamonkey instead of Firefox. Now I'd like to integrate things cleanly, not install it additionally to Firefox. My main concern now are plugins, namely Flash (flash-plugin) and MPlayer (mplayerplug-in, never knew why that hyphen wandered off :o)). I'd like to do things cleanly, so I have a vague idea. Tell me if this sounds reasonable: 1) Install Seamonkey from latest SRPM. 2) Install flash-plugin from SRPM, but modify the .spec file so it depends on Seamonkey instead of Firefox. 3) Do the same thing with the MPlayer plugin. 4) (I never succeeded to install the Java plugin, I guess I'll leave that for after I'm dead :o/ ) Eventually, create my own repo with the resulting RPMS, and define priorities for Yum so that my own packages are used first. Sounds feasible? Or does someone have a better suggestion? Cheers, Niki

Hi, I have a laptop DELL M90 with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card. I'm using centOS 5.1 kernel 2.6.18-53 i386. I installed ndiswrapper v 1.52 I installed the driver http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R164255.EXE The wireless-tools is v 28.2 When I trying to connect to my wireless access point with encryption key disabled everything work fine !!!! When I enabled the encryption key on my wireless access point with à 128b WEP it's impossible to connect to it. If I need to connect to the same wifi access with an ancryption key (WEP 128b) it's impossible :-( I receved the message that the laptop cannot get an IP Adress. The same laptop under Windows can connect to the same wireless acces point with encryption key enable ou disable (WEP 128b) The result when Encryption key is off and the laptop is connect. RAM for cluster net boot?

I'm looking at building a small cluster of disk-less 1 or 2U servers and will probably use CentOS 5. Since these machines will not have any hard drives, what would be the minimum amount of RAM I'd need? Also, if using Rocks or something similar, will that help cluster the RAM together so 4 servers x 4 GB RAM each = 16 GB available? Some applications might be CPU intensive, others might be RAM intensive, so I need to play that balance, too. Thanks. Scott

Command line tool to test bandwidth between 2 servers

What's the best way to do this? Daily, jpg images are added to an inhouse server. Everynight I want to backup these images to a server offsite, via rsync. What I want is to determine what to set the bwlimit to. I also want to estimate how many MB's of images I can move nightly. Thanks Dan

Apparently there is only an Itanium client for RHEL according to APC? I need to setup a few boxes to shut down safely and don't know if the PCNS 2.2.3 Linux version will do it? Anyone know why it needs Java as well? (Blegh) Assuming APC is fairly popular, how do you guys shutdown your CentOS boxes with a UPS with a management card in it? Thanks! jlc

Well I'm not near the config, but I remember it was easy. The default timings match APC's defaults, so all you really need to do is set the UPS name (for identification purposes) and the comm type will be snmp, port will be something like <hostname>:161:<community> and set an email address to send alerts to. Testing is a little tricky as it dials directly in to the snmp interface, you could lower the "time on battery" and kick the plug on the ups and see if it initiates a safe shutdown, but that depends on how many other hosts are on the ups and if this host is in active production. Installation problems with large mirrored drives

I am trying to install CentOS 4.6 to a pair of 750GB hard drives. I can successfully install to either of the drives as a single drive, but when I try to use both drives and mirror the partitions, I start having problems. Anaconda crashes as it is trying to format the drives. This is what I'm trying to create: /dev/md0: 200MB, /boot /dev/md1: 2GB, swap /dev/md2: rest of the drive, LVM PV LogVol00: 10GB, / LogVol01: rest of the VG, /home I uploaded the anaconda log to the CentOS bugtracker, but I don't know if or when I should expect a response from that, so I'm asking here as well. It has been suggested that I build the system with a single drive and then add the mirror to it. Is it possible to add a mirror to a partition that is an LVM PV? Centos 5 Hello I successfully converted my mta from sendmail to postfix. no problem. mail is ok. A by-product of that, as bizarre as it may seem is this: As regular user, when I do 'su -' to become root, all is well. As regular user, when I do 'sudo bash' I become root alright but I also get: sendmail: fatal: Recipient addresses must be specified on the command line or via the -t option I tried many things ranging from temporarily swapping sendmail.postfix to messing around with /etc/profile and /etc/skel/* and many other things. system gets suspended automatically!

Hello! I am running CentOS-5 with latest kernel available by deault (2.6.23). I installed it on a Dell XPS machine having Intel Quad processors (4 parallel cpus). I use it to run a computational program and I need to keep the program running for 1-2 months continuously. I generally boot it in runlevel-3 with network ON without X and use ssh from another machine to connect and run the program using the "nohup" utility. However, the system automatically gets suspended (the computational program stops, ssh stops working, whole the OS seems to be freezing) after 4-5 hours. I have stopped the "acpid" daemon and boot the kernel with "acpi=off" option in "grub.conf" but no help. The kernel log ( /var/log/messages) doesn't show anything special. After the instant of suspension, kernel also stops logging into "/var/log/messages". Please help me out. I think there is a kernel problem. I have run programs for days and days continuously using FC5 (which had older kernel). I can't use FC5 or older version of CentOS because I need GCC-4.1.2+ to compile parallel OpenMP program. Hi, I had successfully installed CentOS 5.1 fully updated in old Fujitsu Primergy MS610 server. There was no problem except that during startup, I found many message saying "ohci_hcd 0000:00:0f.2: wakeup". Searched the internet and did what is written to avoid this to no avail. Anyone have ideas on how to resolve this? It seems that it was related to USB port which, I will not use anyway. strategy/technology to backup 20TB or more user's data

Hi Friends, I am currently using Samba on Centos 4.4 as a domain member of AD 2003 with each user having a quota of 2GB(no of users is around 2,000). Now the management wants to increase the quota to 10GB with this there will be more than 20TB of data to be backup weekly which will take lots of hours. Currently Veritas backup software is used to backup data on tapes. There is a concept of snapshots of Samba with LVM where snapshots of samba are taken at the given interval but so far haven't found any good article or how-to on that and also what is the experience of users using this technology and also what other technologies are being to handle TBs of data. Kickstart stops with dialog about which networking device - how to avoid

Using a kickstart file that stops with a curses dialog "You have multiple network devices on this system. Which one do you want to install through?" The machine being configured with PXEboot has two ethernet interfaces. What's missing from the network entries below? I'd like this install to proceed without asking which ethernet interface. PXE begins the install with DHCP, so Kickstart should already know which of eth0, eth1, etc. to use. Here is the ethernet line in the ks.cfg file: network --device eth0 --bootproto dhcp Any ideas appreciated. =======Keith

xloadimage in centos 5.1

I have noticed that xloadimage rpm is not in centos 5.1 I use the command "xview -identity" to get the size of gifs, jpgs, and pngs. xview is part of the xloadimage package. The command "file filename" also reports sizes for gifs and pngs BUT not for jpgs. Is there an alternative command to use to report gif jpg and png sizes? I thought about just getting an older xloadimage package and that works but I want to do it the right way... THanks, Jerry

hp dl585 - qlogic hba's - centos 4.5 x86_64

Hi I recently installed some hba's into a bunch of these 585's as they are forming a RAC cluster - previously to this they were all using DAS without issue. After the qlogic cards were installed i reinstalled the OS and now once installed the OS will not boot - the box just reboots continuously, it does not even appear to get to grud, although this could be the ilo not displaying correctly. I have installed the OS onto the internal RAID set as usual and the MBA gets put onto this internal RAID disk also, the internal disks are just laid out in a /boot and a / Does anyone know what the issue could be or how i could disable these hba's during the install process so that they are not recognised? thanks

Removing a disc from a software mirror

If I needed to remove a disc from a software mirror for a quick backup before a test, how can I remove it cleanly so that it has a good copy of the OS on it? If I use mdadm to fail then remove it, this would be done while CentOS is running (It's a mirror of the system disc) and I suspect the data on it would not be in a clean state? Is there a way to say have it not involved in the mirror after the next boot for instance? Thanks! jlc

Here are my requirements: SNMP trap collection, ability to import custom MIBs isup/isdown monitoring of ports and daemons Server health monitors (CPU, Disk, Memory, etc) SLA reporting with nice graphs Pager/Email/SMS alerts with groups, filters and escalations Built-in MTBF and MTTR reporting Robust parent-child relationships between monitors or probes. For example, the system must be smart enough to know that if 25 URLs have gone down all at once, that they belong to an apache process that has died. I don't want 25 alerts, I want *one* alert telling me that the parent apache daemon is down. Ability to easily create dashboards from various monitors. We want this so we can see all components of a website in one place, eg, apache URL, database server, disk storage, etc. Attractive, easy to use GUI. We don't want a homebrew project with ugly graphs and a web 1.0 GUI. So far the products I have looked at are: NimBUS SolarWinds IP Monitor WhatsUPGold GroundWork Open Source Nagios And none of them have met all my requirements. Any suggestions?

Creating a Roaming imap account

This (CentOS5.1) box is my new imap server. Using system-config-security-level I opened port 143 tcp, and mail is readable throughout the LAN. I want a Roaming account on my laptop so that I can read mail while away from home. I have set up the account in kmail, and I know that that part is correct, as it worked on my old, less-secured, imap server. However, I haven't been able so far to make a connection. Do I need 143 udp open? What else must I do to allow me to connect over WAN? Thanks Anne

cpu type

I have a quick question. The board and CPU that I'm using in one of my machines was given to me. I didn't take the time to look up the info on the board or anything. I was busy, so I just put the board in a pc case, hooked everything up, and loaded the os on the machine. I didn't know it at the time, but there's a chance it may be a 64bit board and cpu. I don't want to pull the machine out of the desk, and open it up to find out. Is there a command entered by way of the terminal window that will tell me what kind of cpu I have? I want to say that it's an AMD sempron 3000+, but I'm not sure. Thanks Jim

Try to use the system in the morning and it would be busy swapping everything back into RAM for quite a while. So with 2GB of RAM on my desktop, I still see 144K of swap getting used with me generating very little activity as I read my e-mail. Strange gpg problem

When I read a message signed by a gpg key that is not already on my keyring I have runaway cpu usage. To end it I have to 'killall gpg' - at which the display returns, but of course it has not connected with the keyserver, so the key is not downloaded and I get a 'signature not verified' error message.. What's more, although the display has returned, I have to 'killall gpg' a second time, to return cpu usage to normal. I'm at a loss where to start troubleshooting this. Could it be a firewall problem? Anne

Need help in analyzing ntop data

Hi, I want to do some analysis of NTOP data. Currently I have installed NTOP on Centos 5.1 and I am able to see some network data being graphed. But there is no documentation given whether NTOP is showing Network Throughput in MBytes or MBits for ex I am getting Throughput Min: 163.7k , Max: 3.0 M and Last 859.4k and there are some options like anomalia, upper,lower and trend (30min). Under All Protocols -> Traffic I can see per hour data received and data sent but I am not able to figure out how NTOP is currently the percentage of this data Time Tot. Traffic Sent %Traffic Sent Tot. Traffic Rcvd % Traffic Rcvd 10 AM 287.8 MBytes 0.3% 32.9 MBytes 1.4 % How NTOP is calculating %Traffic Sent /Rcvd? Please let me know if you need any further inputs . tail command

In centos 4 we used tail in the following way: tail +83 file That would tail the contents of the file starting at line 83. In centos 5 that same command complains about the file +83 not being found. It appears that the + option in tail doesn't work the same way in centos 5. Is there another easy way to grab the contents of a file starting at a certain line number and beyond.

Install on two discs with Software Raid and LVM

I am mirroring two drives during install, what's the best practice here for the swap partition? Maybe two separate lv's from independent vg's *not* mirrored for swap and the let the OS manage it? Boot and the / vg will be mirrored. Thanks! jlc

If I was wrong, I assume this is beneficial since if one of the HD’s tanks while its running, it will survive the failure and not need to reboot? Large RAID volume issues

I have just finished creating an array on our new enclosure and our CentOS 5 server has recognized it. It shows as the full 6tb in the LSI configuration utility as well as when I ran fdisk: [root@HOST sbin]# fdisk /dev/sdb Note: sector size is 2048 (not 512) The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 182292. Update problem

Hi, This is semi-OT, but is Centos-related. I'm looking for an IPTables GUI to help us with our expanding network configuration. I know there's plenty out there, but most of them seem to manage the firewall on the computer on which they run, or only handle one firewall at a time. I need one that can easily manage multiple firewalls from some sort of central location/repository, i.e. sharing definitions of services, hosts etc. I've googled and hunted, and FWBuilder seems reasonably good from what I've seen so far. Are there any other packages out there? Are there any recommendations (to look at or to avoid)? Im new to the list and CentOS and wonder if there is any option to do full disk encryption with dmcrypt and LUKS during the install stage of CentOS 5.1? I use Debian Etch at the moment and Debian is able to to this. The ATI proprietary driver seems to have fixed the problem. The monitor was in power save mode when I checked it this morning. The ATI Linux Driver wiki at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux is very badly out of date. It has lots of dire warnings about things not working, work arounds required, etc. I pulled down the driver package from the ATI site, ran it to create a Red Hat rpm and installed the RPM. After I rebooted, everything just worked. I added some comments to the wiki to indicate that the problems described there only apply to RHEL/CentOS 5.0. Upgrading a 5.0 install to 5.1 or installing from 5.1 images and then installing the ATI proprietary driver is a piece of cake. It would be nice if the open source "ati" display driver got extended to include more recent ATI video cards. I'm now running a "tainted" kernel since I have the proprietary fglrx kernel module. Unfortunately, as with how this thread got started, lots of functionality isn't there with the "vesa" display driver. Cheers, Dave -- Politics, n. NTP server

I have a Centos 5 64-bit server that has ntp service enabled. Windows XP with SP2 cannot properly sync to it for time, but can communicate with it via samba, ssh, and anything else. I also disabled the Windows Firewall. The C5 system does not have any firewall enabled. Other C5 workstations can successfully sync to it via ntpdate. What else could cause the XP machine to not be able to time sync with the C5 server? Thanks. Scott

DVD support on CentOS 5.1

Hello out there! Been around the block trying to get DVD support for Totem, but I keep running into dead ends everywhere I go. Looking for CentOS 5.1-compatible xine and xine-lib packages as that seems to be the answer, but the only ones I find (like on DAG) seem to be just dead links or I get a message that the mirrors are unavailable when I try to run the rpm. Can anyone provide a link for rpm's that will provide DVD support on CentOS 5.1 32bit? I installed the Gstream rpm's so at least I have mp3 and mpeg support, I just really want DVD support as well. Monitor power save question

I decided to try the x86_64 version of CentOS 5 on my new desktop since it has an Athlon 64 X2 CPU. The one really perplexing oddity is that the monitor no longer goes to power save mode (standby) if the system is idle long enough (e.g., overnight). The "power management" option is set to put the display to sleep after thirty minutes. The display gets blanked but it never goes to standby. The weird thing is that the display behaved as expected when I still had the 32 bit version of CentOS installed so the hardware supports powering down the monitor. I don't see anything incriminating in dmesg, /var/log/messages or /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I'll switch the system to boot to runlevel 3 so I can see if X is spewing something to the first alternate console that isn't getting written to the log file. Networking issue (after latest 5.1 update?)

I'm not *entirely* sure but this began happening at about the time I installed the latest kernel updates for CentOS 5.1 (kernel-2.6.18-53.1.6.el5.i686.rpm from January 24). Shortly before that I changed the encryption on my wireless router and switched from ndiswrapper back to the standard bcm43xx driver, but I'm pretty sure the network was OK before that update for the simple reason that I was able to download the update itself. In any case, for the past week or so wireless network connectivity from my CentOS 5 laptop has been terrible. The wireless router is set up as my DNS server, and connectivity is as expected for wired-connected computers and wirelessly from my Mac, from the game consoles, from my work laptop (currently running ubuntu), and from the CentOS laptop when re-booted into Windows XP. So the problem is restricted to CentOS 5. It takes minutes to do DNS lookups, and to establish a connection in the first place takes so long that "stateless" stuff like web surfing ranges from impossible (timeout) to merely unbearable. The automatic software updater hasn't succeeded in connecting ("Details: None") since the 24th. However, SSH connections seem to work OK (if perhaps a little bursty) once I manage to get connected (often by ssh'ng to the destination by IP address rather than by name). Any idea what could cause this, or how to diagnose it further? I've run "arping -D" and there is only one responder on 192.168.0.1.

rsync question

I have an external USB that I backup to. Rsync uses a bunch of memory in the process. So I thought I would build the file list and output that to a file then let rsync read the file names from a file list (hopefully not taking TONS of memory)... I do the command: rsync --only-write-batch=rsync_file_list -a /home ./rsync_file_list.sh . seems good and some files do copy. however I get a bunch of messages like: (No batched update for "home/jerry/signisam.nx") and then this file is not copied. Why is that and how can I get it to copy. This all works fine when I execute "rsync -a /home ." as I normally do. Thanks Jerry

This appears to be happening because the root filesystem is on a USB drive and the system has lost track of the device, as if the cable had been unplugged (even though it was not). I was accidentally able to see this happen while booted from the 5.0 CD in rescue mode, although I can't determine steps to reproduce it. In any case it's probably unrelated to the networking question, and certainly unrelated to the new kernel.
