For the rest see the URL. So what options do we have for encrypting partitions. Can you encrypt a LVM that has /home on it (or just the ext3 in the LVM)? What about /boot on a USB dongle. I actually think I know how to do this at install with Disk Druid. But can you unmount /boot after booting up (don't want to walk around with the dongle on the system, wear it around my neck on a lanyard).

centos 5.1 kernel dump

Below is a kernel dump that I just got. This is a fresh new install of centos 5.1 on NVIDIA gigabyte MB-GA-M61P-S3. nothing extra has been added. I have not tried the irqpoll but I am surprised to get this. Also the machine keeps running just hod this show on the console... Any ideas??? tar bug in CentOS 4.6?

Since upgrading my server from CentOS 4.5 to 4.6 I've been getting the following error from amanda backups: mutilate /home lev 1 FAILED [compress got signal 11, /bin/tar got signal 13] I was away from the house for most of the end of December and had a couple of other issues that came up that could have been related but apparently weren't (why is it that several things all go wrong at once?). After getting these other issues resolved I was still getting the above error. I tried running the following command as root: /bin/tar -X /etc/amanda/exclude-list/exclude.txt -cvf - /home | gzip -v -c > /share/dave/Home.tar.gz Initially tar would die while attempting to back up one of IMAP folders that had quite a few fairly large e-mails (some pictures my brother had sent). Problem with CentOS 5.1/xen/RTL8110

Hello: I'm having issues with my CentOS 5.1/Xen installation. If I run the xen-bridge, I seem to get flaky ethernet. By flaky I mean everything seems fine from the host machine, but if I attempt to contact the host machine from another remote machine (eg. my laptop which is on the same subnet as the xen machine, separated by 10 ft of cable and a router) I either get extremely high ping times or Destination Host Unreachable. Ditto with ssh. I've disabled the firewall and it does not make a difference. If I stop the xen-bridge (/etc/xen/scripts/network-bridge stop) then I get what I would consider normal network access to the xen machine. Hardware: Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2H MB (Realtek R8110SC onboard nic) OS: CentOS 5.1 64bit Xen I installed CentOS last night with the Xen kernel, the stock kernel did not support my nic which I was aware of. So I downloaded the r1000 source rpm from the centos wiki, built and installed it. Once I did that the card was detected (an ifconfig would actually display eth0), but it would never get an IP address (the xen machine is configured for dhcp at the moment). Today, I installed the non-xen kernel, applied the non-xen r1000 kernel module and the onboard nic was found and working. I then grabbed the updates from centos, saw that there were some kernel updates, applied the r1000 kernel modules again, restarted and (the non-xen kernel) eth0 was still happy. Good. Restarted again, but booted into the xen kernel, eth0 was still happy. eth0 would get an IP address, and was able to see the outside world. However, the outside world (eg. my laptop) could not see the xen machine or it could inconsistently. That is, ping times would be extremely high (on the order of 2+ seconds) or I would get Destination Host Unreachable errors. Trying to connect via ssh would also be sporadic. Thinking it might be firewall related, I disabled the firewall. There was no change in behaviour. I then disabled the xen-bridge and was able to ping with reasonable numbers (<200ms) and connect via ssh. Just to note though, after I stopped the bridge I immediately tried to connect via ssh/ping and did not get through, so I ran service iptables stop (again) and then was able to get correct network access. I'm not sure if stopping iptables again did anything (I doubt) or I did not leave enough time from stopping the bridge to letting everything get reconfigured. I'm not sure what the problem is or how exactly to troubleshoot it. The NIC is slightly different than the one specified in the CentOS wiki (the wiki mentions RTL8110 and RTL8169SC and mine is a RTL8110SC) but I'm not familiar enough with the devices to know how much of a big deal that is, if any. Also, just to be clear, the problem is other physical machines have a difficult time accessing the xen host pc when the xen-bridge is running. I have not gotten as far as creating a VM yet. yum update download only?

Googling for this feature, I saw reports from the yum developer that it wasn't yet implemented. This was in mailing list posts from a year or more ago. Did it ever make it into the yum code? I want to start downloading the updates for a server going from 5.0 to 5.1 and then do the actual installation once I'm on site. I don't want to have to wait around while there for the download to proceed. I'd rather have all the packages ready in the yum cache when I get there.

Live CD Planning systems

My company supplies me with a very nice HP nc2400. Much faster, more memory, etc than my old HP nc4010. Problem is the drive is not swappable, and they encrypt the drive (the OS is XP). The nc2400 has a DVD/CDRW and 2 USB 2.0 ports so I was thinking..... Make a Live DVD with everything I need but map /etc /root /home and /var/log (and what else?) to a USB flash drive (16Gb are available and I was just sent a PR on a 32Gb, maybe I can get an eval device :) ). So first I would want a bootable DVD that would have everything I want to have running on the cd2400. And of course, everytime one of the components get updated, I will have to build a new DVD. Then I would like to run within XEN my company's XP image on that encrypted drive. Is this possible. If I could do this, I can move the nc2400 as my 'workhorse', downgrade my nc4010 to my test box, and reallocate the Toshiba 3490 to the family.... And more importantly one less box to carry when traveling! I guess one thing in this whole equation will I be able to repartition the USB flash drive with a swap partition (will probably never use, as there is 1.5Gb memory in the nc2400. Twice as much as the nc4010), and an ext3 data partition? Or should I use LVM on it?

Intel SRCS16 Controllers

I have a centos box with a few of these in it. Its shipped monitoring/alerting software needs X, and this server only has a console installed. Does anyone have any experience with or a suggestion on how I could monitor these cards with something 3rd party based that doesn't need a gui, or Java at that matter! Thanks! jlc

aacraid hard/firmware differences?

This isn't really a Centos question but it affects the systems so I'll ask here anyway. I've noticed when swapping disks around on IBM 3550 boxes that some of them see one more cylinder on drives than others but I can't find any settings or differences that might control this. It's an obvious problem when you fdisk/format on the one that sees the additional cylinder, then move or copy this disk to one that doesn't. Strange Problem with dm-0

I began an update of one of our servers via yum and, coincidentally or not, I have been getting the following logged into the message file since: messages:Jan 7 15:55:51 inet07 kernel: post_create: setxattr failed, rc=28 (dev=dm-0 ino=280175) Now, this tells me that dev dm-0 is out of space but, what is dm-0? Switching screen resolution on the fly

Is there any way other than CTL ALT + and CTL ALT - to set and or change the resolution of the X server when I want to. Is there a way to so take me to "1920x1080" mode and then later take me to "1366x768" mode. With xvidtune I see the -next and -prev options but I was hoping for jumping to specific modes. I so realize I can also edit out unwanted modes in the xorg.conf but I'd rather not manually change items on a machine. Thanks, Jerry

ARGH!!! Instal fails at drive format time

Got all the way through the selection of packages. All those time consuming tasks and the install got to formating the drive and crashed on a format error! Since I know exactly how I want to lay out the partitions, is there a way I can boot from CD, and get into Disk Druid to set the partitions and do the formating. Then when I come to the install just select to keep the drive how it is? And I have to have LVM....

Migrating software raid from SUSE 9.0 to Centos 5

I have a SUSE 9.0 box with a software raid. It consists of 6 IDE drives and three different controllers The OS is on a separate drive. What I want to do is put a new boot drive in load Centos on it. Then I want to be able to mount the raid without loosing any of the data on it. What information do I need from the SUSE OS (raid info etc...) to tell Centos how to recognize it? The data is backup on DVD's but it would be a real pain to reload it.(its around a terabyte of data) So I'm writing here for some advice. I've setup many raids in the past but only fresh installs. DRBD NFS load issues

My NFS setup is a heartbeat setup on two servers running Active/Passive DRBD. The NFS servers themselves are 1x 2 core Opterons with 8G ram and 5TB space with 16 drives and a 3ware controller. They're connected to a HP procurve switch with bonded ethernet. The sync-rates between the two DRBD nodes seem to safely reach 200Mbps or better. The processors on the active NFS servers run with a load of 0.2, so it seems mighty healthy. Until I do a serious backup. I have a few load balanced web nodes and two database nodes as NFS clients. When I start backing up my database to a mounted NFS partition, a plain rsync drives the NFS box through the roof and forces a failover. I can do my backup using --bwlimit=1500, but then I'm not anywhere close to a fast backup, just 1.5MBps. My backups are probably 40G. (The database has fast disks and between database copies I see run at up to 60MBps - close to 500Mbps). I obviously do not have a networking issue. The processor loads up like this: bwlimit 1500 load 2.3 bwlimit 2500 load 3.5 bwlimit 4500 load 5.5+ The DRBD secondary seems to run at about 1/2 the load of the primary. What I'm wondering is--why is this thing *so* load sensitive? Is it DRBD? Is it NFS? I'm guessing that since I only have two cores in the NFS boxes that a prolonged transfer makes NFS dominates 1 core and DRBD dominate the next, and so I'm saturating my processor. Thots? Jed

/etc/passwd aand /etc/shadow out of sync on 4.6 box

Fellow list members, I recently tried to add a user to a little used server that hadn't see a change in users for quite a while. When I use system-config-users I get an error alert that says - The user database cannot be read. This problem is most likely caused by a mismatch in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow. The program will exit now. I awk'ed out the user ID's and ran diff. That came back with the shadow file having two more users than the passwd file. Ok, fine, whatever. But the trick now is how to fix this. Can I just use vi and delete the offending lines from the shadow file? Is there a utility or script that will sync them in a less potentially destructive way? PXE problem after CentOS reboot

Dear folks, We are installing a large diskless cluster using CentOS 5.1. The hardware is pretty new - Supermicro X7DWT boards with Harpertown CPUs. Unfortunately we have some PXE-related problems described by the following scenario: 1) Set up DHCP, TFTP and NFS on a server, prepare PXE kernel and initrd - fine. 2) Start up the node using PXE for the first time - fine. 3) Reboot the node - PXE boot fails for all next attempts. We see that a server gets DHCP requests and answers them, but a node doesn't response with DHCP ack. After that we can boot CentOS again. 6) When Linux is loaded, if we reboot a node using "bmc power cycle" instead of reboot or shutdown, a node will boot for the next time without problems 7) There are no problems with a second GbE interface (without IPMI) 8) So our guess is that Linux on a reboot leaves Ethernet device in some state that cause brain damage for IPMI+PXE combination. We tried to play with some e1000 driver options, we are also tried latest Intel driver - nothing helps. Do you have any idea what goes wrong? Any help will be much appreciated. Yum-update error

tomcat still sees jvm version 1.4.2 in Cent OS 5

i chose to install tomcat during the OS install as well as java....however, since I needed to use a different jvm, i used the method described in http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/JavaOnCentOS for Sun jdk 1.5.0_13 and it worked fine as I can tell, as using the alternatives --config java command, i see both 1.4.2 and 1.5.0 versions and choosing the 1.5.0 version yields the right version when doing a "java -version" command....also doing a "which java" also points to the right location for the java 1.5.0 install...everything appears fine except that tomcat still sees java 1.4.2 as its jvm version... How do I blank or overwrite DVD-RW disks in CentOS 5?

I'm trying to use DVD-RW ("minus RW") disks in my LG GSA-4040B drive. I can write a new disk just fine, but can't find any way to blank or re-use a disk. When I run xcdroast and click on the "Blank CD/DVD+-RW" button, I get "Error while blanking." Windows has no problem and will run just fine (so I believe this is not a hardware issue). Interestingly, this machine worked fine for several weeks and one day decided to crash within the first few seconds of boot. If I boot the CentOS DVD, when it comes to searching for existing CentOS installation, it will crash just the same. If I format the linux partition, I can then re-install CentOS, update it just fine... Then a few days later it will crash just the same right after booting. This machine is running a Gigabyte P35-DS3P motherboard, with 2GB of DDR2-667MHz RAM, an Intel core-duo quad: Q6600. It has two 250GB hard drive in RAID1 using the bios RAID support (so I can have RAID on both Windows and Linux). It's running the 32 bits version of CentOS 5 Any ideas what the problem could be? nForce 630i Chipset, unable to get integrated nic working

Hello everyone, I've also posted this onto the Network support forums but figured I'd shoot it to the mailing list as well. I recently purchased a ECS GF7100PVT-M motherboard and now I'm wishing I'd investigated driver support a little better before I did! I was able to get Centos 5.1 XEN Kernel installed but have been having a helluva time getting the on board NIC going. The MB is running a nForce 630i chipset and has the nic card listed as a Realtek 8111B. I've downloaded what I believe to be the latest Realtek drivers and if I do an lsmod I can see the r8168 module present. I've tried adding the line alias eth0 r8168 to my /etc/modprobe.conf file but it hasn't gotten me anywhere, I've also tried with Nvidia's forcedeth module to no avail. Does anyone have some ideas of what I could try next? Do I need a newer version of the forcedeth driver? Is this chipset not going to work with Centos 5.1? Is it a Xen related issue? lspci shows "Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 07dc (rev a2)" Any thoughts/pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, David

Iptables and impersonating another O/S

i have a CentOS 5.1 server running sshd (exposed to the outside world). i'd like to use iptables to fool nmap into thinking i'm running another O/S. e.g.: iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -d 192.168.0.64 -j PERS \ --tweak dst --local --conf /etc/personalities/macos9.conf iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -d 192.168.0.64 -j PERS \ --tweak src --local --conf /etc/personalities/macos9.conf all of the tutorials on iptables i've found take me through steps that involve a kernel recompile ... do i really need to do this? is there a tutorial that provides a somewhat large degree of detail on how to do what i'm interested in doing? i haven't compiled a kernel in approx. a decade (slackware). of course, i'd like to avoid the kernel recompile if possible. thanks --tom

mounting & partitioning Seagate FreeAgent external HD

Hi all, As a disclaimer, I'm new to this list and very green administering CentOS. I run it on my test servers and do very basic networking and server administration (most users, permissions, and web app stuff). I have a backup server that I am using rsync to collect important in-process file for our digital library from both Windows and Linux servers, as well as a specific applications which are updated on a separate test server. This backup server ran out of space and I have no more internal slots available to add another disk, so I bought a 750 GB Seagate FreeAgent external USB hard drive. I've seen some various issues out there about how Seagate FA HDs go into sleep mode when used in the manner I want to, but all of the people posting about that seemed to be able to mount theirs with no problem. I can see the device in my /proc/bus/usb/devices file, but fdisk -l doesn't show it at all. I was trying to mount and partition it using Webmin, but I can't figure out the device name I need to give it to mount and partition it. How is the best way to figure that out? Long time waiting on boot

I just installed Centos 5.1 with XEN on my HP nc2400 duo core and there are two problems out the starting gate: Oh, I am booting off a 40Gb 2.5" drive on a USB adapter. The internal hard drive is encrypted and not usable right now (until I get XEN figured out). But I don't think it has a bearing... The system hangs for some reason at various points. When first starting up graphic (you know, when the screen goes from character mode to graphic and you can then follow the boot by pressing <alt-D>. When bringing up loopback When bringing up eth0 (dhcp server very reachable) When starting mcstransd (whatever that is) When starting system message bus When starting some bluetooth service (the first boot but not after the yum update) When starting Avahi deamon (timeout out and failed during this long wait, I should turn that service off anyway) When starting HAL (the first boot but not after the yum update) Each hangup is a few minutes! Then the system continues. I did not see anything of note in /var/log Second issue, the external video. I cannot not turn it on. This HP notebook does not offer any BIOD control of the external monitor. There is a 'presentation' button right above the keyboard you are suppose to press to toggle the external video. It does nothing. Well I do hear the drive spinning so the system is trying something? I should point out that my XP boot off the internal harddrive sometimes 'looses' the external video, and I have to go into display control and turn off then on the 'presentation' option. This could work out GREAT if I can get a few more things working (and learn XEN to boot the XP in a window).

Question: What rpm command do I use, to Import the Public Key that's in the browser window? Mail server setup for small ISP

Hi, I will probably have to design an e-mail (and other components) infrastructure for a small ISP soon (WISP). I'm doing some research to determine which components would be best to offer e-mail services to their client and allow the staff to manage accounts easily. I usually use virtual machines a lot for isolation and easy backups and migration (when a hardware node is underpowered, it is easy to migrate one or more virtual machines to another hardware node easily). I have looked at iSCSI and drbd for high-availability of the storage: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/realworld/82284/san-on-the-cheap/page1.html. This looks like it should be doing a great job of high availability storage. For mail server, I guess I should look at an MTA and IMAP/POP server that supports LDAP and/or MySQL for users. Postfix should be a good choice for MTA, as I know it (at least a little, but I know sendmail better). For IMAP/POP, I'm not sure... Would dovecot be sufficient, or should I try cyrus. I'd rather use components that are available for base or extras repository (or rpmforge). I think that squirrelmail and horde would do a good job for webmail. There shoudn't be any troubles having some redundancy for DNS, web servers, mtas, but what about IMAP/POP? linux-HA? MySQL replication should be enough, I guess. Or maybe linux-HA as well. I wonder if I should add GFS to the mix to have multiple IMAP/POP servers use the same storage. Or maybe IMAP proxies? Any insights welcome :). Ugo

I am looking at K12LTSP-EL5 which is Centos 5 based. Supposedly their disc2 maps to Centos 1of6 and so forth. I have a repo of the Centos 5.1 isos: /centos/5/os/i386 The question is can I put the K12LTSP disc 1 in a directory: /centos/k12ltsp-el5/i386 then with some logical link magic make this directory appear to have all 7 CDs worth of content? Or put the k12 disc 1 somewhere else and do 2 logicla mappings into one directory?

I want to install Hylafax+, IAXmodem, and T38modem on my Trixbox 2.4 which is built on Centos 5.1 ("vmlinuz-2.6.18-53.1.4.el5"). Over at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=148904 there are Hylafax+ rpms for: Fedora 7,8 Fedora Core 2,5,6 Redhat 7,9 I **think** Fedora Core 6? IAXmodem is only available in source at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=148814 (TB only has it an rpm for Centos 4.x). So if anyone knows of an rpm of iaxmodem 1.0 for Centos 5.... And T38modem is a real challenge to find....

rhel source to updates?

I noticed on the rhel errata page: http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHEA-2008-0001.html that they have made a configuration change to fontconfig for the liberation fonts. I have the liberation fonts installed via rebuild of fedora 8 src.rpm - including a fontconfig file. I'm guessing the update will come through CentOS at some point and I'm trying to make sure there isn't a file conflict with my rpm and the update that would prevent installation - but I can't seem to find the sources for rhel updates. I'm kicking myself because I found them before, didn't bookmark them, but I can't seem to find them now. http://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/enterprise/ doesn't seem to have anything for rhel5 The files in my f8 liberation rebuilt that I'm worried about conflicting with the update are: /etc/X11/fontpath.d/liberation-fonts /etc/fonts/conf.d/59-liberation-fonts.conf I'm a little bit amazed that they are including an update for a configuration for fonts they don't seem to package, not sure why they are doing it - that doesn't seem to be their style, but anyway, does anyone know who mirrors the rhel src.rpm updates for free software packages?

System drops off network after a few minutes

I have an Intel SE7525RP2 motherboard with a Yukon Marvel (82541GB controller) NIC in it. After installing CentOS 5.1 it functions fine for some minutes then looses network connectivity. By coincidence, I was using the system to clean some HD's for another and had booted off Knoppix and noticed it never exhibited this behavior, the network remained functional even overnight when I returned to the system? I looked through messages and didn't see anything NIC/network related, can anyone suggest something to check? Thanks! jlc

Hello all, I am having a problem running yum after doing the 4.6 upgrade. I did a live update through yum and no problems were encountered. Hello all, I have ipvsadm-1.24 installed, and there's an error when the service starts: Applying IPVS configuration: /etc/init.d/ipvsadm: line 62: /etc/sysconfig/ipvsadm: No such file or directory is the install broken? Pidgin and (lack of) sound on CentOS 4.6

When I start pidgin from the Applications -> Internet -> Internet Messenger menu, my sound device stops working. I think this has something to do with the Gnome applet. I appear to end up with two (sometimes more) copies of the "gaim" process running -- such that if I use the right-button menu on the Gnome applet to quit pidgin, a login dialog is stil left behind and sometimes won't exit. I'm guessing these multiple gaim processes somehow deadlock the sound device, such that even after I kill them, no other process can play audio. Pidgin/gaim itself can't play sounds in this condition, either. I've tried using "lsof" to find all processes that have the sound device open and force them to exit or restart, but that doesn't help. Once the sound goes out, only a reboot brings it back. The flash and mplayer plugins for firefox/seamonkey are still able to play (silent) video in this condition, but starting up e.g. gmplayer blocks forever trying to open the sound device. Googling turned up this: http://blog.turbulentsky.com/2007/12/pidgin-has-no-sound-in-ubuntu-gutsy.ht… but I have no reason to be confident that would apply to CentOS. Searching on gaim instead of pidgin finds stuff that's four years old and almost certainly not relevant. Unfortunately I don't have much experience with audio apps on linux (or anywhere else, for that matter). I've never had any luck creating a .asoundrc or trying to get all my applications to agree on whether to use ALSA instead of OSS (although I take it OSS is pretty much obsolete now, I don't even know if the kernel in RHEL4 is recent enough to use ALSA by default). So if anyone has any clues to share on how to go about diagnosing this, I'd appreciate the help. xen dependencies

It appears that if I perform an install of CentOS 5.1 without changing *anything* in the options, then do a #yum groupinstall 'Virtualization' I can now get Xen to function in bridged mode (it has network connectivity). In lieu of this, can anyone shed some light on what dependency Xen has that is not installed when you do a completely bare install and execute a #yum install xen? I am hoping to finally end up with a minimum install of CentOS with Xen functioning without a gui or any additional services that won't be needed. Thanks! jlc

John Rosatti, Excavators, 3D, NASA and Why Should I care? Well, because! There are two definitions for excavator; one is any person engaging in excavation is called an excavator. The second definition of excavator is, of course, the vehicles called excavators, which are sometimes called diggers, trackhoes, fronthoes, and 360-degree excavators or just 360. This is not to be confused with Microsoft's vertical technology and news search engine called Excavator or xcavator, as one has nothing to do with the other. Here we're talking about heavy duty digging machines, even though several manufacturers like John Deere, offer Compact, Midsize, and Large Excavators ranging from 0-6 metric tons for the compact excavators, 6 to 40 metric tons for the midsize, and 40 to 85 for large John Deere excavators. Additionally there exist mini-excavators, made by another manufacturer, that will fit through a door. In case you're now wondering what 3D and VRML, or actually x3D has to do with excavators, that is something we will be getting to in other articles, for right now you'll just have to trust that there is a fit. For now, however, let's get back to excavators, the digging machines used for, but not limited to: Digging, demolition, minning, river dredging, heavy lifting, and with hydraulic attachments, brush cutting. It is these same hydraulic attachments that have expanded the use of excavators, far beyond their original use of excavation such as the Low-energy Planetary Excavator (LPE) proposed by NASA. The latest paper to be found on this Nasa proposal is for 2006, so the current status can only be guessed at, nevertheless, the concept is certainly intriguing as are the LPE's possible commercial applications. Basically, The LPE would be a general-purpose machine with the ability to mine ice, regolith, and rock; it would also support construction activities. The purpose and application is meant for future manned and unmanned missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. .Additionally, adaptations could be made for use in extreme-low gravity such as on asteroids. This idea of efficient and reliable an excavator that has usage on differing planetary surfaces and various materials has the goal of enabling exploration and bases from outposts to self-sustaining complexes. The LPE would be able to accommodate the different materials that are encountered on planetary surfaces as the LPE would sense geologic changes and respond to them by using the lowest cutting energy possible. Moving on the to the possible non-NASA commercial application it can be said that the same qualities of the LPE that apply to space would also attract terrestrial users or said differently, us earth bound creatures. As both business and government markets rapidly expand, so does the need for urban infrastructure. Using NASA's own words on the subject; "Urban construction settings restrict the use of explosives, to minimize damaging vibrations, making mechanical methods attractive. In addition, shallow tunnel construction is rapidly changing from cut-and-cover to wholly underground, because excavations disrupt city traffic. Coupled with increasing population, these factors enhance the market for innovatively flexible systems such as the LPE".If I could have said it better than NASA did, I would have. But I couldn't, so I didn't. cluster suite & gfs problem since update

I have a cluster that has been operational for some time and functioning flawlessly until a recent yum update. The last unflawed working kernel was 2.6.9-55.0.12.ELsmp. The current kernel is 2.6.9-67ELsmp. The problem appears to be some type of infinite recovery loop of sorts. It runs find for a few minutes, then the service restarts itself. I created a cron job to invoke a dump script according to Tower Of Hanoi. I am dumping a subdirectory and a filesystem. The backup script, with some other lines removed: /path/to/dump -0 -fv /dev/nst0 /var/log /path/to-dump -3 -fv /dev/nst0 /home When viewing the dump logs, it looks like it is taking the whole job as a level 0. We have a RHEL2 server that has had one of the drives in the raid array fail. I would like to do a full backup of the system before we replace the raided drive, in case the second drive decides to die during the procedure. What is the recommended way to back up a linux system? I was thinking of doing a snapshot, but the system is ext3 with no LVM. It has been suggested to hook up a usb drive and do an rsync of /. Are there any better solutions? The reason I wanted a snapshot is that I wanted to get an image of the disk, so that I wouldn't have to reinstall and reconfigure all the apps. Russ

Do what I do when I need to setup a new Linux facility. Google "linux audit" I remember getting a good hit near the top with that. There are cli tools for adding files/folders/mounts to the audit system and you can tailor which type of activity to audit. United Built Homes, Flipping Real Estate or Flipping Paper? Flipping real estate properties is not for everybody but it is the fastest way to make a buck in the real estate business. Most everybody has heard of someone buying a "run down" house for a good price well below market value, fixing it up and selling it at a fair market price. Flipping a "fixer-upper" is definitely one way to turn a reasonably quick profit. I know some people who do it this way but they are more into the contractor and renovation business than they are of the investor mindset. Some of these "fixer-upper" properties are in need of extensive repair and will involve electrical work, carpentry work, etc. If the investor gets involved and does some or all of this work then there could be enough profit there but if the investor farms out the required labour, profits could get eaten up quickly. For these types of flipping real estate investments, the purchase price needs to be at a huge discount and normally would be found somewhere in the foreclosure stage. For the person that is in the mindset of investing rather than being in the renovation business then flipping real estate will only involve flipping the paper contract of the property without even taking possession of it. You can flip by entering an agreement to buy a property then sell the contract to another investor before close of escrow. Using this technique won't even require you to put your name on the title. Profits will generally be less than the fixer-upper investor but involves much less work and the whole process is much quicker. A fixer-upper investor would not be happy in making a profit of a few thousand dollars for a few months work on renovations but an investor that can just flip a contract for a few hours or days work would be. Avoid disclosure of your profits to the new buyer by using a double closing. After making a sweet deal and flipping a contract involving a juicy profit you may not want all these details to be revealed to your buyer. The solution is a double closing, transferring the property to you initially and then reselling immediately at the same lawyer's office just an hour later to your buyer. There is a drawback here and that is a double set of closing costs so you would have to weigh it out to see if it's worth it to your particular situation or not. Further, you can use a title insurance company for the actual closings. For the issuance of the title insurance policy, the title insurance company will prepare the closing documents and close the transaction usually without an addition charge.

Random files in homedir gets deleted

On one of my systems I seem to loose a file or two from time to time. Last night, one of my files (/home/online/sh/NattjobbPrivat.sh) was deleted/removed/vanished. Another time it was /home/online/sh/daemon that was deleted. But I can't seem to find anything strange in the logs or in the history, nor would any of my scripts running in crontab mess with those files. Where can I look for clues? i'm trying to setup LVS, and tried both the lvs-dr and the lvs-nat, but can't get any to work. I'm hoping people here can answer a few questions that might help and shed light onto the situation? #1 with regards to the Real Servers, is there anything that needs to be configured other that the http service? I ask this, because I suspect yes, and it has to do with what type of LVS you have: 1a) lvs-dr: on the RIP of the web servers, create an lo:0 and assign the VIP to it 1b ) lvs-nat: on the RIP of the web servers, make sure the default gw points to the inside network card eth1 1b) lvs-nat: on the LVS, with 2 nics, eth1 (private where web servers are located): 192.168.0.100, and create a nat gateway of 192.168.0.254, where the real web servers gw is, and make it eth1:1 how do I go about getting diagnostic info from all this? pulse? i can't connect at all to any of the web servers.. I now wish to enable postgresql server instrumentation and my research indicates that I need to install postgres-contrib (done) and then run the admin81.sql script. MyhtTV or Freevo or something else?

Hello, I have the idea brewing for some time in my mind - to build Linux based HTPC. It would be used for movies, cable (analog for now) recording, Stepmania, backup station, etc. And I would like to get some information before proceeding to estimate the cost. Which one of the Linux projects would you suggest and why? MythTV, Freevo or something else? Is CentOS good for such task or I should better use some more bleeding edge distribution like Fedora? Also what are hardware requirements? I believe HD 1080p h264 movie playback will set the bar. Which Intel or AMD CPU is enough (but not too expensive) for that? [Semi-OT] Advice on large webmail setup

Hi all, As the resident Linux guru, I've just been tasked with costing a webmail setup for about 600 000 users. They each have 10MiB (small, I know) mailboxes. The current setup has about 40 million web page accesses per month. Has anyone here any experience with this kind of thing? You can fail-over using iSCSI multi-pathing. Have the initiator log in to both targets and then setup dm-multipath to do fail-over. The ticket clinic, What Is U.S. Copyright Law? The US Copyright Law grants rights to individuals for the works they create. The US Copyright Act of 1790 has changed over the years. The current basis of US copyright law is based on the Copyright Act of 1976. US copyright law is relatively automatic. Once someone has an idea and produces it in tangible form, the creator is the copyright holder and has the authority to enforce his exclusivity to it. In other words, the person is the owner of the creation. It is not necessary that a person register their work. However, it is recommended and it can serve as evidence if someone ever violates a copyright. It is interesting to note that when an employer hires an employee to produce a work that the copyright is given to the employer. Violations of US Copyright Law are generally enforced in a civil court setting. However, there could also be criminal sanctions brought against someone who violates US copyright law. Someone in serious violation of US Copyright Law, such as counterfeiting, can find themselves on the inside of prison looking out. People need to understand the copyright symbol is not a requirement. Someone may have a copyright, yet their work may not have a copyright notice or symbol. US Copyright Law covers a wide range of things that are derived from artistic expression, intellectual or creative work. This includes things such as literary works, music, drawings, photographs, software, movies, choreographic works such as ballets and plays, poems, paintings and more. The law covers the form of expression, not the concept, facts or the actual idea of the work. This means that someone can use another person?s idea or concept and produce their own take on it. However, copying another person?s work is a violation. some things may not be copyrighted but they may be protected by a patent or trademark. Individuals who have a copyright on a particular piece of work can do with it what they will. They may choose to copy it and sell it. They may display their work or perform it in public and charge admission, or they can assign or sell the work to someone else. Individuals who have a copyright can also choose to do nothing with their work, if that is their desire. However, if someone comes along and takes the work and tries to use it in some way, that person is still in violation of the owner?s copyright. Copyrights cover published and unpublished work. Anyone who is in the creative arts arena should be very careful that they do not violate US Copyright Law. For that matter, anyone who is a fan of the creative arts should make sure they are not in violation of a copyright. Simple things like uploading, downloading and sharing music or movie files can result in serious charges and fines being brought against them. The popularity of the Internet and file sharing software has increased copyright violations. Xen, GFS, GNBD and DRBD?

Hi all, We're looking at deploying a small Xen cluster to run some of our smaller applications. I'm curious to get the lists opinions and advice on what's needed. The plan at the moment is to have two or three servers running as the Xen dom0 hosts and two servers running as storage servers. As we're trying to do this on a small scale, there is no means to hook the system into our SAN, so the storage servers do not have a shared storage subsystem. Is it possible to run DRBD on the two storage servers and then export the block devices over the network to the xen hosts? Ideally the goal is to have the effect of shared storage on the xen hosts so that domains can be migrated between them in case one server needs to go offline. Do I run GFS on top of the DRBD mirrored device, exported via GNBD to the xen hosts; or the other way around, using GNBD to export the DRBD mirrored device and then GFS running on the xen hosts? Is this possible; is there an easier/simpler/better way to do it? Thanks, Tom

gettext does not work after glibc update

Firewall frustration

Well FWbuilder is NOT easy. The documentation does not match the current GUI. Now the box is locked up. I will have to pull it again, hook it up to a kybd/VGA and reset iptables.... Maybe Shoreline with webmin.... Problem is I want a REAL router/firewall with little work. Both public and private nets have routable addresses. No NATing for me! I just help write the RFC ;) And all the templates for fwbuilder want you to be using NATing. Perhaps I should just set up another Astaro firewall. I have been using Astaro since v3, so I am comfortable with it....

Centos 5.1, mythtv, saa7134_dvb?

I'm trying to set up my Centos 5.1 box at home to run mythtv. The DVB-T card requires saa7134 and saa7134_dvb. These are not in the Centos kernels. Centosplus has saa7134, but not saa7134_dvb. 1680x1050 Monitor

Hi, I just got a new Samsung 226bw 22" wide monitor to replace my previous one. I also have a nvidia 8600gts video card. I can set interactively [through the nvidia-settings utility] the 1680 by 1050 resolution. I have saved the settings in the xorg.conf, but I can't keep it after a restart of X or a reboot. When I restart X, the login is at: 1680 by 1050, then it switches to 1280 by 1024. Here are the video sections from my xorg.conf Any suggestion with what's wrong? ISO burning challenge -- pilgrims progress

First the Storix drive works just fine under DSL 4.2.1 on my Libretto. So the drive is fine, the media is fine. And cdrecord on DSL reports the media to be Manuf. index: 27 Manufacturee: Prodisc Technology Inc. I have all of ONE system with Centos 4 on it. A Trixbox 2.2; I added cdrecord and found that I could burn the iso image ONLY by including the -force option to get around the "cdrecord: Cannot get disk type" error. So I moved back to the Centos 5 system. I had to add the speed=4 (when the unit supports speed=8) along with the -force to get it to burn a iso image (btw, timeout=100 does nothing. The failure is in a few seconds, adding to the timeout changes nothing). There are a number of timing errors on the Centos 5 system. Even the Centos 4 system had a SCSI error (0x7000). I did find ONE mention of "cdrecord: Cannot get disk type": http://crashrecovery.org/oss-dvd/Changelog.html but that is dated 2/2/06. One would think it is fixed in Centos 5..... I have NOT gotten the HP CDRW working yet, that is the one I want to leave on the server, as the Storix is my traveling drive. More work. Any pointers gladly taken! I REALLY want to move my CD processes to Centos. I want a GUI interface and want to rip and burn music CDs as well.....

Help with full and incremental dumps

I have an Overland Arcvault 12 library with a full LTO3 magazine of 400/800 GB tapes. It is connected directly to the fileserver via a SCSI card/cable. The two main directories I want to back up are /var/log, which is on one filesystem, and /home, which is on another. There are _currently_ no databases to worry about, but there may be active users logged in and active jobs running. We'll just take our chances with what can be backed up. I've successfully run dump/restore to an external USB 1 TB hard drive as our backup device until the tape library arrived. Now, finding the appropriate dump and restore commands to throw into a script is the fun part. The first time will obviously produce a full backup of said directories to back up. Subsequent ones will be incremental. What should my dump lines look like for both full and subsequent incrementals? And, to test the backup and in case I need to retrieve a file, what should a respective restore line look like? Thanks much. Scott

So right now I have installed k3b on this notebook. I am using my Storix DVD/CDRW usb drive. I can read cds with it. Cannot burn CDs. First k3b suggests slowing down (from 8x to 4x). Then use TAO. Then it gave up. So I try cdrecord directly. -checkdrive finds some interesting things. Can't connect to torrent tracker

Well, yesterday my 5.1 and 4.6 systems could connect to torrent.centos.org OK. Today neither system can connect. I can ping, but that's all. No changes were made to the firewall during this time. Any tips on debugging this? I successfully http downloaded all the ISO images from various mirrors this morning, so I think my net and firewall are OK. TIA -- Bill

Hi guys; I'm having a problem with a new pc that has an Realtec ethernet device. Don't know why the driver is not loading and is not detected during installation process. I tried to load r8169.ko unsuccessfully. It load but no device is detected. No dmesg or /var/log/message. ¿Any help on how I can configure correctly this ethernet device? Firewall builder - which rpm?

I need a decent, easy, firewall on Centos. This is for test systems, so I do not need a lot. For 'a lot', I use and Astaro firewall. I had used Firestarter once, but found out that it cannot handle routing between a public and private network. Basically saying this is impossible. Of course, if your private network is addressed per RFC 1918 (that I co-authored), I can understand the difficulty, but otherwise.... Anyway, I found firehol, but this is rather confusing. ( how do I define a service like for port 5903? What about UDP for RTP? How do I run the thing?) There have been people here mentioning Firewall Builder, and that seems be well documented, except which rpm I should grab for Centos 5. I am looking over at http://www.fwbuilder.org/ and http://www.fwbuilder.org/nightly_builds/build-329/ for rpms, but which one? fedora-c5 ? thanks.

Hello All, Is there a way to run a script from CentOS 5 and have it look at a file and get it if its new then the file it got last time, if not it does nothing, if its a new file then it wgets the file and then unzip the file then runs a php script, I would want this to check once a week or if it would not make much of a different then each day is fine if this is able to be done can someone point me in the right direction to do such! Xen 3.1 install and xen-libs

It appears that xen-libs-i386-3.0.3-41.el5.rpm is only compatible with xen 3.0.3. If I want to install 3.1, where do I find a compatible xen-libs rpm. What exactly is this for, there is no mention on the xen website of this requirement? Thanks! jlc

VIA C3 support for CentOS 5? (i586 kernel)

Hi all. Decided to upgrade an old Slackware 10 box I had. The box is running a VIA C3 processor and apparently doesn't support the cmov extension that most i686 processors do. As a result I cannot install CentOS 5. I discovered a few posts from way back in April: http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2007-April/079352.html http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2007-April/079439.html Implying that an i586 version of the installer might be released. Was something along those lines ever done, or could it still be done? Or should I just stick with CentOS 4 for the time being? (I did try 'i586 text' on my netboot 5.1 CD) Thanks, Ray

VooDoo3 = no joy

I posted this in the support forum but I suspect I may have better luck here. Old home built PC that has a 3dfx VooDoo3. When I tried installing CentOS 5 on it - the graphical installer would freeze just after starting X - but cli install worked just fine. The failing power supply on the old CRT finally completely died, so I bought a new Dell flat panel (1908FP) and hooked it up. With a new monitor that works, I decided to try X and got no joy - same symptom as the graphical install, completely frozen X display very shortly after starting the X server. The box isn't frozen, I can still ssh in - but keyboard/mouse are frozen (IE impossible to ctrl-alt-FN to switch to a virtual console). The X log in /var/log/ did not have anything that looked like an error - so I ran startx > foo.log 2>&1 and I did get what looks like some error messages - attached as text file. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I may see if I can replace the video card, I suspect finding a video card for this old style of AGP isn't going to be easy, so I'd prefer to have a solution to the VooDoo 3 issue. VooDoo 3 did work with X11 in Fedora Core 6 - the OS I ran before installing CentOS 5. CentOS install is up to date, only CentOS packages that have replaced by non CentOS packages are sox and php (and yes, I'm certain of that). OpenMPI not compiled with Torque support

The OpenMPI package that ships with CentOS 5.1 does not seem to be compiled with torque support. It does, however, seem to be compiled with gridengine and slurm support. Would it be possible to get this changed?

Xen Networking Issue with CentOS 5.1

Hi, I tried this post on the Xen list first with no answer. I have 4 machines and 3 of which (all different) have no network access when booted into Xen. I tried using Fedora Core 8 and it produced the same results. Is it normal for the virbr0 interface to take an arbitrary IP? How does it decide what to use? vnc server

I followed these instructions, http://egopoly.com/archives/2006/09/how_to_use_vnc.html to successfully connect to my centos 5.1 box. I assumed I could #chkconfig vncserver on to make this permananet but when I tried to #service vncserver start I got the message no desktop configured. Can anyone point me in the right direction to have vncserver run at startup? Thanks! jlc
