Hi all, I added the "workspace switcher" and I now have 4 virtual screens. When I do "vncviewer machine" works and shows me the current 1-4 display. however, I want to go directly to one of the 1-4 displays. when I do "vncviewer machine:1" it says "unable to connect to host" How do I get the displays 1-4 to accept the vnc connection? I have module vnc loaded in my xorg.conf file. Again vnc works into the machine but I want to go directly to one of the 4 available virtual screens. Thanks, Jerry

Hi guys; I'm having a problem with a new pc that has an Realtec ethernet device. Don't know why the driver is not loading and is not detected during installation process. I tried to load r8169.ko unsuccessfully. It load but no device is detected. No dmesg or /var/log/message. ¿Any help on how I can configure correctly this ethernet device? SELinux and rsync permission on /bin

I am getting this error from the SELinux troubleshooter SELinux is preventing rsync (/usr/bin/rsync) "search" to bin (bin_t) I can fix this easily enough but I want to ask why is rsync searching /bin as a repository? Help with dump/restore

So I recently installed an Overland Arcvault 12 tape library on a server to back up /var/log/ and /home. The server is an out-of-box RHEL 5 install, with all packages selected, in an isolated lan, with no package updates. Also, this is a live server that cannot be brought down for backups, and some files may be actively in use during the dump - just gotta live with it. Since I know EL5 and C5 are the same, and the level of support I get from RH is actually less effective and slower than resources such as this list, I'm looking here, first. Up to this point I was backing up to a USB-mounted external 1 TB hard drive. I was using a script containing: /sbin/dump -0v -z2 -f /media/usb_drive/dump0 /home I played with restore on that, and it tested fine. For the tape, I thought it would be nice to add /var/log (should have done it before, but didn't think of it...) Trying to adapt the knowledge to a tape library... /sbin/dump -0 -v -z2 -f /dev/nst0 /var/log /sbin/dump -0u -v -z2 -f /dev/nst0 /home I have a cron job that dumps the results to /var/log/dump.log, and a review of the log file claims all went well. Now for the restore... I just tried playing with different options of restore, but could not successfully restore anything. I ensured I was in a scratch area so as to hopefully not overwrite current files. What is the proper procedure for dumping and restoring now? Should I be dumping to /dev/nst0/dump? What restore commands would I use to recall a file? I'd like to keep things as simple as possible - people have suggested legato and amanda, but for now, I would think/hope dump and restore would work. Thanks. Scott

I am now in the prediciment of getting as far as downloading the rpms from the installation website( a local repository I created on same switch). The installation progresses through downloading the various image / xml files etc from the server , formats and partitions the harddrive accordingly. But when it gets to downloading and installing the rpms it throws a wobbler. CentOS on laptops - TuxBox?

RedHat magazine this month has an article about the TuxBox M750: http://www.redhatmagazine.com/2007/12/06/hardware-review-tuxbox-computers-s… Has anyone bought one of these? I'm particularly interested in estimated battery life, which that review doesn't mention. The M750 is comparable in most other ways to an HP that I was about to buy, but the HP's battery life is supposedly unusually good (5+ hours).

boot hangs on trying to start sendmail

I am building a new server. It will be a temporary firewall of sorts. I am well into the config, made a lot of changes; almost ready to set it up in the target networks, but now.... The system hangs trying to start sendmail. I was thinking hard about disabling sendmail, but thought I needed it for internal functions, so did not. yet. So is there someway to get the system working so I can change something like disable sendmail? The system has no cdrom, diskette, etc. In fact the kybd/monitor require a special temp setup. Perhaps I can edit the kernel line in grub to disable something? If necessary, I can pull the drive and put it in a system that does support cdrom. That is the way I did the initial harddrive install.

Failed to enable keyboard

I have a set of systems that I have to build that cannot be booted from CD. So I put the drive in another system, do the install, move the drive, and fix the video with system-config-display. But seems perhaps there is another (small) problem. The build system has a PS/2 keyboard interface (and mouse). The target system has NO PS/2 interfaces. Only USB is available. So at boot I get the message: atkbd.c: Failed to enable keyboard on isa0060/serio0 What do I do to remove this?

OT? Creative Zen player not registering as a USB device

I plugged my son's new (Christmas) Zen V player into my CentOS 5.1 box and it doesn't register as a device that the system can see or mount. If I lsusb, it shows up as bus 2, device 8, but there is no corresponding /dev/??? device for it, so the system can't get at it. (I tried my flash drive in the same USB port and it works fine, so it's not the hardware.) How do I get around this? Thanks. mhr

Issues installing x86_64 5.1 on Ultra 40

Hi all, we're trying to install CentOS 5.1 on a Sun Ultra 40. This is an AMD-powered machine and we're using the x86_64 version of CentOS 5.1. The machine is using the NVidia CK804 chipset and has SATA disks. It also has 16GB's of memory which prompted us to upgrade the BIOS on the machine from 1.1 to 1.6 per this (we also have the two quadro cards): http://docs.sun.com/source/819-3954-18/index.html#0_37092 The install goes fine up until the installer is trying to format the disks. Part of the way through it simply dies and pops up an error saying that the installer couldn't format the LVM volume and we have to reboot. An examination of dmesg output shows that there are many SATA errors occuring at this point. Timeouts and such. After a reboot, the SATA drive no longer shows up -- not even in BIOS. It's as if the formatting has instructed the drive to deactivate itself. :) A hard reset and reseat of the drive in the SATA enclosure brings it back again. First thought was that the slot or SATA port was bad, so we have moved to others with the same result. Solaris 10 x86 installs perfectly on this machine, so I'm starting to think that the sata_nv driver is to blame here. We're in the process of trying 32-bit CentOS 5.1 on the system just for giggles, and may try Fedora 8 as well or RHEL 5.1 and use our paid support to track this issue down, but thought I'd run it by everyone here. Didn't see any existing issues in bugzilla.redhat.com or bugs.centos.org. Any insights on this? I will get the exact error messages posted up here soon (output from dmesg, etc). TIA, Ray

libata and PMP (Port Multiplier) support in CentOS

I'm looking at buying a NORCO DS-1220 and it comes with a NORCO 4618 PCI-X card (4 port eSATA, with a port multiplier on the card or the chassis). I've been trying to pin down whether or not CentOS will see all 12 drives, and I haven't seen anything that is definitive. I see that the kernel module sata_sil24 supports the SiI3124 chip on the NORCO 4618 card, but I haven't found whether or not the default kernel will support the SiI3726 (PMP) without the libata-tj patch. I'm just trying to determine the easiest route to go with minimal cost. I've found another enclosure that uses 4 mini-SAS connectors, but in addition to the extra $320 for the enclosure, I'd need to buy a $300 card and at least one $120 cable (either SFF-8088 to SFF-8470 or a straight SFF-8088). While this is for at home, I would consider this a "mission critical" device and don't want a flakey setup, which is what I have now...I've become an expert at recovering from a 2 drive failure in a 4 drive RAID5 setup using mdadm. After a wait of about 5 min, the boot moved on to hang on sm-client. When that finally timed out, I was able to log in. The problem was indirectly DNS. When I had configured the 2nd interface (which I added in the last reboot), I included a gateway address. Then when I booted, there were two interfaces each with their gateway address. Well the second (non-existant) one was used, so no access to the DNS server. Linux vs Windows Drivers

What is so fundamentally different about drivers in Linux and Windows? Specifically, video card drivers have always frustrated my understanding of what's going on under the hood. Say I have a nice video card from ATI. I need to install some cool drivers from ATI in order to make the card work at its best and in order to do any cool things like dual monitors. I download these drivers from the company's website, install them on my machine, and I'm off and running. Assuming all goes according to plan. That's all fine. Now, this is what confuses me. In Windows, I'm done forever at this point. I've never had a problem, nor heard of a problem, where I had to mysteriously reinstall the drivers for my video card after an Automatic Update. Not so in Linux. Every kernel update has me wondering if I'll have to reinstall the drivers for my video card. It seems like sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I just reboot and pray that my video card is still working afterwards. Not knowing a great deal about how drivers really work in Linux or Windows, I can only really conclude that either Microsoft never updates the Windows kernel (at least not in a way that screws with driver interfaces), or there is something very different about how the two operating systems handle drivers. Can anyone shed some light on the subject for me? Thanks, bit

centos 5.1 vnc server

Any one using vnc server on centos 5.1? on 4.6 I had no issue. on 5.1 I am having times when on connetion the VNC serveris crashing and logs me out of all my open'ed items. I can relog in. But I was wondering if others are seeing this and if there is something to do about it. THanks, Jerry

Natulius CD burner does not accept my 700Mb CD-R disks

When I try to burn anything to cd, I get a message to insert a CD large enough for my file (normally an ISO image). Doesn't matter if the iso image is a 600Mb Centos ISO or a 48Mb DSL ISO. Same warning. My CD-Rs are Memorex 700MB/80min 52x disks that work just fine on XP systems. So what am I missing configuration-wise?

Nothing. I move the cd (oh and this is one taken from my disk supply last summer) and put it into the IDE cdrom reader and that little icon came up on the top system tray in Gnome telling me that I might want to mount the cdrom by left clicking on the icon. Once mounted, I get a CD icon on the desktop and this lets me open nautilus to the CD. And nothing like this happened with the external CDRW drive. Opening a terminal window and issuing mount, I see the /dev/hdc is on /media/060622_2133 type iso9660 Now lets test all this on the external again... so I insert the CD and again the light is flashing red. mkdir /media/cdrw mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /media/cdrw and get the response: mount: No medium found I am going to dig out my portable CDRW from my notebook backpack (for my real work notebook that I am typing from now, not my 'corp' notebook!).

"yum --security" and staying with 5.0

Hello, So I've watched a few threads about the new 5.0 vs. 5.1 upgrade and have a couple of (hopefully) practical questions about this: Context - I'd like to stick to 5.0 at least for a while until the dust around 5.1 settles down (and I'm back from holidays). As an example - In Debian, as long as I stick to "stable" I can be sure that the only updates I receive there are for heavily tested very important bugs and security issues, so I should generally apply them. 1. If I read the FAQ correctly, in order to force yum to stay with 5.0 should I just manually edit /etc/redhat-release from: CentOS release 5 (Final) to: CentOS release 5.0 (Final) (i.e. add ".0" to the version)? If not then what should I do? 2. I am hoping that yum-security will allow me to stick to the latest security updates for 5.0 without forcing me to upgrade to 5.1 until the dust settles down. Am I correct that this is possible with yum-security and the repositories provided by CentOS? Will "yum update --security" update packages with later versions only if those versions fix security issues? Are security updates maintained for 5.0? Debug symbols for CentOS server

is there a repository of build symbols for the various packages i have installed on my CentOS 5 server? here's a use case - i'm developing an apache/httpd plugin module - it's not loading properly - i want to run apache in single-process mode (httpd -X), attach gdb to it, set a break point just before my module is loaded, and step through the code to find out why my module is not being loaded properly. ideally, i could do something like so: yum install httpd-symbols (same question for any/all packages on my server, not just httpd). thanks --tom

Creating a local repo

I have created a local repo, set its priority highest, and populated it with xen-3.1.0-1.i386.rpm and kernel-xen-2.6.18-3.1.0.i386.rpm yet when I do a yum list *xen* I don't see those rpm's? Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks! jlc

CentOS-5 Need Help With Serial Ports

I have been struggling with setting up two serial ports on an HP/Compaq D512S (Intel P4) under CentOS-5. I am not at all sure why these things were not auto-configured when I initially installed the CentOS system from CDs but they were not. I have found various resources on the web and from them uncovered the setserial utility. What I need from somebody is guidance on how to use this utility to properly configure the ports. Currently in /dev/ I have: crw------- 1 uucp uucp 4, 64 Dec 21 12:14 ttyS0 crw------- 1 root root 4, 65 Dec 20 17:36 ttyS1 crw------- 1 root root 4, 66 Dec 20 17:36 ttyS2 crw------- 1 root root 4, 67 Dec 20 17:36 ttyS3 When I run setserial -g ttyS* I get this: # setserial -g ttyS* Cannot get serial info: Invalid argument ttyS1: No such device or address ttyS2: No such device or address ttyS3: No such device or address Can someone walk me through this? I setup hylafax previously on our existing CentOS-4.5 server and never had this difficulty nor had to use setserial, so far as I can recall. Update repo rsync but no new repodata?

I just did a manual resync of my local update repo from mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5.1/updates/i386/ I got a new version of Thunderbird, but not a new set of files in the repodata directory. Thus when I did a yum update against my local repo, I did not get the new version of Thunderbird. I will note that the files on my local repo are dated Dec 20th and the ones on mirrors are dated Dec 21st. The command I am using is: #!/bin/sh rsync -auv rsync://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5.1/updates/i386/ \ --delete --exclude=debug/ /repos/centos/5.1/updates/i386 Oh, and the old version of Thunderbird was not deleted....

Install question

I have been running Fedora for a number of years and have decided that for my mailserver system (which doubles as a small time web server) I want to go to an OS that has a supported lifespan of more than a year, especially since this machine has in the past been up longer than a year without reboots. The machine that it will ultimately host the OS is a dual processor P3 machine with 2GB of RAM (the machine was free and is normally running idle so cpu isn't an issue), I also plan on (continuing to) running software RAID 1 on this system. So I'm not rushed into an install I plan on installing the OS on different hardware My questions are several. 1) The build hardware is only a single processor with 768MB of memory (also a P3) what if anything will I need to do to enable the second processor? (I'll make provisions for a larger swap space at build time) 2) The build hardware won't have a second disk usable for RAID, is it possible to build the RAID as degraded during the install? Or am I better off building it as a non RAID system and transfer everything to a RAID disk later? 3) The system bios will allow me to boot off the network, can I do an install from that boot? there is no CD/DVD reader in the box, nor is there a floppy drive. USB (flash?) may possible, but it is USB1.0 (1.1?) and quite slow and I'm not 100% positive the BIOS will support booting from a USB device. Any other caveats to be aware of? My experience with linux has been several Fedora (core) releases some Redhad releases prior to that, and many many many years ago slackware (when the install was a stack of diskettes!) TIA, Jeff

Hello List, I am getting familar with CentOS and using Rel 4.6. My goal is to get a automated update *(email)* of system updates. I found the link below in the WIKI. Additionally I have enable "yum" to run as a service int 345 and started it. yum update from the command line works fine- There are three scripts indicated on the web link below : http://wiki.centos.org/YumCheckOrInstallUpdates usr/bin/yum-check ( not on the machine) /etc/cron.daily/yum.cron: ( not on the machine) there a is file named yum.cron at this location- [root@bmc-4 cron.daily]# cat yum.cron #!/bin/sh if [ -f /var/lock/subsys/yum ]; then /usr/bin/yum -R 120 -e 0 -d 0 -y update yum /usr/bin/yum -R 10 -e 0 -d 0 -y shell /etc/yum/yum-daily.yum fi etc/sysconfig/yum-check: (not on the machine) I am not sure what to do with the information provided. saslauth in postfix 2.2 on CentOS 4

Hi All, I have a mail server with CentOS 4 (fully updated) running dovecot and postfix. I have a couple of virtual domains, so I've setup postfix and dovecot accordingly. That is, dovecot is doing the auth for internal hosts, and postfix is handling sending/receiving for both domains. What I want to do now is open up pop3s and smtp over TLS, which will give me access to my two domains from external clients. The pop3s bit was easy, and my tests have been successful. The hard bit is the smtp over TLS. Since I'm using dovecot to handle the authentication, how do I tell postfix that the sasl auth should be passed to dovecot? I know how to do this in CentOS 5 since it has postfix 2.3, and that version has support for dovecot authentication. So far, I haven't been able to figure out how to do the same thing in CentOS 4 and postfix 2.2. Any tips? Hello, I am using CentOS 4.6 (2.6.9-67.plus.c4) on a toshiba tecra 8000 notebook. If closing the panel, "Panel Power On/Off" is enabled in bios, the notebook does suspend. But after opening the panel, the notebook completely freezes. If the suspend only takes a few minutes, then everything is working fine. But if the suspend takes a time more than five or ten minutes, the system completely freezes. centos 5.1 vnc crashing

Hi all, I was running centos 4.5 with not issues on my main box. I updated to (fresh install) to 5.1 Things run fine except I use vnc alot from home to connect back into my machine and sometimes on connecting it is crashing the vnc session and then it kills my entire login session. Is anyone else having this on 5.1? This is my modules section in xorg.conf Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "extmod" Load "fbdevhw" Load "glx" Load "record" Load "freetype" Load "type1" Load "dri" Load "vnc" EndSection It worked flawlessly on centos 4.5. Any ideas about how to get it not to crash. Jerry

4.6 update overwrote my /usr/lib/python2.3/site.py file

We had some custom additions to our site.py file for a third party application. 'yum update' to 4.6 overwrote the file with no backup or warning. Not hard to repair, but it did have me worried there for a few minutes when the application failed to start. Is this a python issue, an upstream issue or a CentOS issue? Can something be done about it going forward? Jeff

SCSI bad block table display

Hi All: Is there a utility available that will allow for the dump/display of the bad track table of a SCSI drive. We had this capability on SCO OSR5 but I have not been able to locate anything similar for Linux. The closest I have found is the badblocks utility that is part of the e2fsprogs package but this appears to only test for bad blocks not display the current bad block table contents. I have done quite a bit of searching with Google but either it does not exist or (more than likely) I am using the wrong search parameters. File description left open in LVM

Hello, I used to have LVM on my machine to combine the capacity of a hard drive and a partition on a different drive as one volume group. I had problem with one of the disk but I was able to remove all the data of the computer, and replace the disk, and add another disk Now I want to start over and create LVM again. However, I keep getting this message: # vgdisplay File descriptor 128 left open File descriptor 129 left open No volume groups found # pvdisplay File descriptor 128 left open File descriptor 129 left open What does this mean ? Also, in /etc/lvm I found archive/ and backup/ directory which seems to refer to my old LVM, and also .cache. Are they safe to remove ? Thank you for any help. RDB

Postfix Configuration Setup for 2+ domains

Hello, I have a client that wants to have a dedicated smtp sending host. But they have 2 separate domains then that don't want to have share IP address. The reasons from this is long and drawn out. Is it possible to setup postfix in a virtual host config, like apache for example, such that, domainA.com listens and sends on one IP address and domainB.com listens and sends on another address. This host is simply a email forwarding host, so no user accounts are on the server, they have about 5 servers serving websites for 2 domains and subdomains and want email coming from a common source for both domains (this will be the relayhost for the web servers). I have it setup to listen to 2 ip addresses but as of now I get: 220 smtp.domainA ESMTP Postfix on both addresses. Is there a way to have one address show as: 220 smtp.domainA ESMTP Postfix and the other: 220 smtp.domainB ESMTP Postfix More importantly, email send via 1 should look like it came from that domain and email sent to the other look like it came from its domain. I can find info on virtual domains, but its geared for receiving email for multiple domains. Thanks, Rick

Problem after crash during yum update

I was doing a "yum -y update" on a CentOS 4.5 system to get to 4.6 when my system froze. I couldn't ping it nor switch to an alternate console. It was completely frozen. The only recourse was to cycle the power. Resizing a Xen DomU disk image

Hello Mailing List! A quick question. Has anyone gotten a resize (in my case grown) a Xen DomU disk image? Here is the procedure I have followed: 1. Install a DomU using virt-install Customize xvda to be all one partition ext3 2. On Dom0: dd if=/dev/zero bs=1G count=1 >> <my_disk_image> ll -h (Image is now 1GB larger) xm create <DomU> On DomU: df -h (Size has not changed) shutdown -h now On Dom0: e2fsck -f <my_disk_image> (Errors Bad Magic...) resize2fs -f <my_disk_image> (Errors Bad Magic...) xm create <DomU> On DomU: df -h (Still reports old size) I am assuming that because resize2fs didn't run that the DomU doesn't know about the additional space. Getting email from cron when script is run manually

We have some third party software running on a CentOS 4.5 virtual machine. The software is delivered as compiled python and I wrote an init script for it myself (/etc/init.d/gk). Because the software lacks the usual robustness of CentOS services, I have a bash script (/etc/cron.daily/gk-restart) which simply calls "/etc/init.d/gk restart". So, as expected, root gets an email every day when cron runs the script. Here's the puzzling part: If I need to manually restart the service, I will use the command "/etc/init.d/gk restart". But then I get the very same email message from the cron daemon as if the daily cron job had been run automatically. The email is timestamped for the time at which I manually restarted the service. How on earth is the manual restart being monitored by the cron daemon? The init script is full featured and maintains pid and lock files in /var/run and /var/lock/subsys respectively. Screen blanking crashes

Hi, I upgraded a Dell C521 from Ubuntu 6.04 to CentOS5.1. The Dell has an NVidia 6150 analog video card. The screen is an LG1952Tx. After the screen blanking goes on, and the screen goes to sleep, the screen goes black except for a blue note saying: analog video, invalid frequency... I have installed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1. Everything works great except for the screen sleep... How to generate UUID for Xen?

The new virtual machine manager in Centos 5.1 displays some weird behavior here and I assume it's because the UUID of one running VM is the same as of a VM that is shut down. I used the same config file template for creating all my test VMs, so several have the same UUID. Didn't produce any problems with xm. But the new VM manager in Gnome shows active and inactive VMs and identifies them by UUID, which results in it trying to mix the status etc. of the active and of the inactive VM. How can I generate a new UUID? I assume there's some checksum in it, so that I can't just make one up? OS: CentOS 5.1 x86. Hi, has anyone used any joystick under CentOS 5? Yumex shows the following joystick-related packages installed: "freeglut 2.4.0-7.1.el5" "joystick 1.2.15-20.2.2" "xorg-x11-drv-joystick 1.1.0-1.1" I am under XFCE 4.4.2 but I also have GNOME and KDE installed. Any ideas on how to configure a joystick under this configuration? Thanks a lot.

CentOS-5.1 I need some help with setting up the SELinux context for a custom httpd directory so that I can write log files into it. We are not going to do that. Usually, we manage to configure our policies to handle situations like this as they arise using audit2allow and audit2why, I just cannot seem to find a way to generalize a solution to this one. P.S. Hi there, not really sure if this is a bug, but more so rather a missing file... I installed a fresh 5.1 copy very minimal - no desktop, etc. Now it came up later that I would need a desktop on this install. So I was going to just groupinstall in the Gnome Desktop. # yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" Now while processing the dependencies, it fails out with a dependency for libgaim.so.0 (for package nautilus-sendto). So I tried... # yum provides libgaim.so.0 No results. Ideas? dnk

"multi-boot" drive partitioning

I want to set up a multiple "mode" computer with four separate Centos installations on it. The objective here is to have a "spare computer" that I can boot up into any of four "modes" depending on what I'm swapping it in for a the moment. For example, I want to be able to boot it up as a webserver, or as a fileserver, or as a LTSP-enabled application server. And so on. I have a computer here with two 300GB hard drives in it, which I plan to split into four 150GB partitions, one for each of my "modes". And I want to install Centos separately and independently into each partition, so I can just tell Grub to boot up using whatever partition I choose. What is the best way to accomplish this? Don't use the ram disk feature it was really intended for initrd images. How to add Xen machine to xenstore?

I have been looking at the docs, but can't seem to find a way to add a machine to the xenstore so it shows up in 'xm list' even when it is shutdown. One good thing about a spare UNPLUGGED machine is in case of a lightning strike. We had a customer site get hit by or near by lighting. The unplugged spare wasn't connect in any way shape or form to anything. No power cord, no network connections, nothing. After the strike, they were having problems with their industrial systems and blamed it on the computers we installed. We took the spare system that wasn't plugged into anything, started it up, and things still didn't work. This proved that our system wasn't the problem. OpenLDAP auth problems

i have CentOS 4.5 with OpenLDAP 2.2.13. OpenLDAP contains users with SSHA-ed and CRYPT-ed passwords. the one and ugly thing is that users with CRYPT-ed passwords cannot bind to this LDAP server. however users with SSHA passwords do can. is there any solution without recompiling anyhting? -- Be Secure, Stay Open - live w/ OpenBSD

I recently had a problem with the configure script from perfparse running properly so that I could 'make install' it to work with Nagios 2.10 on latest CentOS 4.x + RPMForge (see http://readlist.com/lists/centos.org/centos/5/28966.html) Thinking it was a problem that was a result of "yum remove gd", I formatted the box and reinstalled everything. What is the REAL version of Xen in 5.1?

I have a 5.1 system with Xen installed. The package says 3.0.3, but an 'xm info' shows 3.1. So what is it? Is it 3.0.3 patched to 3.1 or is it 3.1 packaged as 3.0.3? Instalation with a customized kernel

Hi all I don't know if it's the right place to ask for this problem. I just install my server with centos4.5, using PXE/http protocol. ALl goes very well. My asking is that i need a customized kernel to use all of the posibilities of my server. This kernel, made as an rpm file, run well on it. But i would like to be able to install the server directly with this kernel, using PXE/http.. As for any reason, i can have in 10 minutes a new fresh server ready installed. problems with CentOS chroot

Hello, I've got strange problem with centos (as well as rhel btw) chrooted environment. First of all I created simple directory with only the libs for 'bash' and 'id' tools: ---- # chroot testcase/ bash-3.1# id uid=0 gid=0 groups=0,1,2,3,4,6,10 ---- Yes, I even do not have /etc/ directory inside testcase/ , but id shows groups from the _host_ root account. I tried to create full chroot with all the libs and tools based on debian testing, but the same result: # id uid=0 gid=0 groups=0,1,2,3,4,6,10 but if I do # ls /etc/shadow /etc/passwd /etc/group /etc/group /etc/passwd /etc/shadow then # id uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),1(daemon),2(bin),3(sys),4(adm),6(disk),10(uucp) Args, quite strange for me. No it probably would not provide the performance unless run on 10 Gbe. Of course that depends on the number of write transactions, 1Gbe maxs around 100MB/s, so if you need faster performance look elsewhere. I doubt it's reliability too, nbd is a simple protocol, but as such doesn't provide for error recovery. Qlogic HBA scanning issues with CentOS 5.1 ?

Hi, I got few servers (IBM HS20,HS21 blades, IBM xSeries 3650 & others) connected to a dual fabric san throught Qlogic HBA's (23xx, 24xx). Multipathing is done with device-mapper-multipath. On CentOS 4.x i can scan for new scsi devices without any problems, get them up with multipathing & use them without any problems. However, after i started installing CentOS 5.1 (did not notice this problem with CentOS 5) i cannot seem to rescan without huge problems. Sometimes when i rescan after presenting a new LUN to the server nothing is detected, and sometimes the device comes in without any problems at all. Sometimes i even loose some paths after rescanning.....again, i had no problems at all with CentOS 4.x. I use the Qlogic script (Dynamic Target and LUN Discovery <http://support.qlogic.com/support/EULATemplate/Template.aspx?TemplateID=9&p…> 2.2) to scan for new luns. Has anyone had any issues with scanning for new devices off san after upgrading to 5.1 ? Thanks, Finnur

After 5.1 update $releasever is still 5

I have performed the 5.1 update via the 5 repo on a couple of systems. I then went to switch these systems to my new local repo using ther $releasever variable. It still has the value of 5, not 5.1 Where is this set? Why was it not changed to 5.1? On the one clean install from the 5.1 isos, $releasever is at 5.1 I think.

Samba issue

for some reason I cannot to my samba server on centos 4.5 with any other linux distro. I have tried pclinuxos, kubuntu, fc7. I have entered the correct credentials in the correct case to no avail. What's funny is my winders machines can connect just fine. Here's the output from a quick (5.753 seconds) ping scan of my network: [root@bend etc]# nmap -sP 192.168.0.0/24 Starting Nmap 4.20 ( http://insecure.org ) at 2007-12-15 08:10 MST Host 192.168.0.172 appears to be up. MAC Address: 00:0A:5E:1A:EC:9E (3COM) Host 192.168.0.181 appears to be up. MAC Address: 00:0F:B0:6D:61:9E (Compal Electronics) Host 192.168.0.185 appears to be up. Host 192.168.0.250 appears to be up. MAC Address: 00:12:17:7A:B6:F6 (Cisco-Linksys) Nmap finished: 256 IP addresses (4 hosts up) scanned in 5.753 seconds You can also try letting nmap figure out what each device is with something like: nmap -T4 -A 192.168.0.0/24 My x86_64 laptop confused it but it was spot on at identifying my wireless AP. What is equivalent to MS OUTLOOK ?

Hi All, I am looking for an open source email client package that is equivalent to MS OUTLOOK. Clients are running Windows XP and Vista and Linux. So the package should be able to run on both Windows And Linux. Mail server is running Ms Exchange. So this client pkg should be able to access Global Address book of the MS Exchange Server just as MS OUTLOOK. What about evolution ? find IP address of device on network based on MAC address

I have a device on my network that is not DHCP and I dont know the IP address of it and it has not method of finding it or changing it unless you know the IP address (setable by browser). Is there a way on linux, based on MAC address, to get the IP of the unit? Thanks, Jerry
