I have some suspect drives that had errors report but format fine at the controller level. I would like to see how many bad blocks the format encountered and remapped. If there are a large number of these then I do not want to use the drives in any critical applications. If the number is small then I will assume that the drive is basically fine to use and that the errors were localized. Since I posted my original inquiry I have discovered that some of the drive manufacturers have T&D utilities that might allow me to get at this information. The main problem here is that they tend to be Windows based which means that I will need to setup a Windows system just to test the drives. I would rather test them in the systems that the will be running in (one is CentOS 4.5 and one is RHEL3). Seagate does have an older utility that supposedly will run at the Linux CLI (their terminology) which I will be trying out. mounting nfs as httpd_sys_content_t under selinux

I have a NFS mount that I want apache to be able to serve files from. According to this doc: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.1/Deployment_Guide/rhlcommon-section-00… I should be able to mount it with a context that will allow apache to access it. But when I try the command they suggest: [root@vm-37:~] mount -t nfs -o \ context=system_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t \ 192.168.1.100:/data/test /mnt/test It mounts, but when I do: [root@vm-37:~]# ls -lZ /mnt drwxr-xr-x 65534 65534 system_u:object_r:nfs_t test It doesn't show the correct context. (I don't know if it matters that I don't have a user with UID 65534, only the remote NFS server has that.) And sure enough, apache still can't serve from it. So... any ideas on the nfs mount with the context option? I'm running CentOS-5.1 with latest updates of everything. johnn

Hi, i was trying to install CentOS 5.1 on new machine based on Intel Q35 desktop board, witch 2 SATA disks (configured as RAID 1) , 8GB RAM and Intel Core2 QUADCORE. The first problem was with install - it hangs before installer startup at ACPI messages. So i installed it with ACPI=off switch. The first problem is : Dec 7 09:54:01 vmhost1 kernel: BIOS bug, no explicit IRQ entries, using default mptable. (tell your hw vendor) Dec 7 09:54:01 vmhost1 kernel: Processors: 1 Which kernel should i use? I have default installed kernel. The second problem is with LVM (probably raid on board - in bios i switched in sata mode to raid, and created in raid utility RAID1 volume from those 2 disks: /dev/sdb1 [ 101.94 MB] Found duplicate PV hpGVb3U5Q0lxFe1LN6eJpSCJSWs0xfpu: using /dev/sdb2 not /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 [ 297.99 GB] LVM physical volume [root@vmhost1 archive]# What does it means and how can i fix this? RAID-1 strategy for a CentOS/Xen server?

Hi, I'm planning to migrate my current server configuration: AMD Athlon/X2 FreeBSD 62-Release 2 x 250GB HW RAID1 (all partitions RAIDed, incl. swap) to a Xen/CentOS config: AMD Athlon/X2 Dom0 CentOS 51 Xen 31 Dom1/1 FreeBSD 7 Dom1/2 CentOS 51 ... To "best preserve" RAID1 mirroring protections of OS, Data, etc *AND* optimize performance, how should I setup RAID for the "new" configurations? Should DOM0 be RAIDed? Each DOM1, as well? Should I continue to use HW RAID or switch to SW? A mix? I understand I can do any/all ... choosing the "right" option is the goal, here. Advice is appreciated. Regards, Bob Tompkins

Hello, I'm new to the linux world (long time FreeBSD user), and I'm wondering if there's an easy way to install CentOS 5 without the GUI and unnecessary services? I see there's a server cd for CentOS 4, but I didnt see anything like that for CentOS 5. Am I looking in the wrong places, or is it just necessary to manually select the minimal set of packages? I have been dragging my feet on remote display, and have just gotten VNC going to have SOMETHING to move off the start line. But I need the 'best' for different situations, so I want to rate them. 1 to 3 where 1 is the 'best' for the catagory and 3 the loser. VNC RDESKTOP FREENX Server memory Server cpu client memory client cpu bandwidth thanks. I AM search the net for this information. So far have not found the magic query request :)

Setting read/write file access on cifs mounted file system

I'm accessing a cifs mounted file system (on a MS Windows XP machine) from my CentOS 5 box. I can't edit/save files on the remote cifs system using OpenOffice etc, although I can copy/paste whole files OK (ie from CentOS to cifs). I've looked at the permissions on the mounted cifs and see that I have folder access "create and delete files" but not file access (the setting is blank). I've tried setting file access (as root) to read and write, but it doesn't allow me to do this - any suggestions as to how to resolve this please? Thanks, Andy

VNCsever not starting at boot

When I run system-config-services, it shows vncserver set to start at boot. in /etc/inittab I have init 3 vncserver does not start at boot. I log in on the console as root and service vncserver start and it starts with some warning messages about bad display name in "add" command, but I do not see where these are logged to copy them into this message. Once I start it from the console, I have trouble using the vnc client to access the server. I really need for the vncserver to start at boot, as I want it to run in a place with no monitor or keyboard....

perl-libnet on CentOS 5?

Hello, Is there any package on CentOS 5 which provides perl-libnet? Beartbeat 1 depends on it but so far I couldn't find a package. Also - is there a way to find which non-installed package contains files with matching names (a-la Debian's apt-file)? I know about "rpm -qf" but it only works on packages which are already installed. I saw some place mentioning a command called "pin" but I couldn't find it (sort of "chicken and egg"?). Cannot open /dev/mcelog

Hi there, I'am running CentOS 5.1 on a Dual AMD Opteron QuadCore System, without major issues so far. But if I call mcelog I'am getting the message "Cannot open /dev/mcelog" ... because it's not there. I'am running 2.6.18-53.1.4.el5xen kernel, is this related in any form? CentOS Repo Questions (and Samba)

Hello, I have two questions which are really CentOS repository related, but they primarily revolve around the Samba packages available. 1) Why is the s390 architecture version of Samba for CentOS 4 so much more up to date than the i386 architecture version? If you open these two links in a browser window... http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/4/updates/i386/RPMS/ http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/4/updates/s390/RPMS/ and compare the available rpms, the s390 version of samba is 3.0.25b, while the i386 version of samba is only 3.0.10. 2) On a related note, why does it appear that a recent security update was not applied to the CentOS 4 i386 architecture version of samba? If you look at the top two patches listed on the Samba homepage here: http://us3.samba.org/samba/history/security.html You will see that they should apply to all versions of samba from 3.0.0 to 3.0.26a. So that would include the i386 CentOS 4 version of samba because it's 3.0.10. I am on the CentOS Announcements mailing list, and I still have not seen an announcement that this has been fixed in the i386 CentOS 4 version of samba. I have seen announcements for CentOS 3 i386, CentOS 3 x86_64, and even CentOS 4 s390. But not for CentOS 4 i386. What gives? Thanks, - Bit

centos 5.1 netinstall iso bugged ?

Hi all, i'm trying out a netinstall test installation. When asked to where I do want to install I got a bunch of choices. If i select HTTP I insert: server: mirror.centos.org path: centos/$releasever/os/$basearch but then he says to me that he can't find the "boot.iso" in: http://mirror.centos.org//centos/$releasever/os/$basearch ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ please note the double /. If then i go back I see: path: /centos/$releasever/os/$basearch with a /at the beginning I did not enter. Ideas ? I ran into this when I first put Linux on my laptop back in the summer of 2005. I originally worked around it by just attaching an external monitor which also works but takes a little more planning and effort. The problem probably has something to do with anaconda shifting into graphics mode when anaconda starts but the mode isn't compatible with the laptop's LCD display. Using nofb tells the kernel not to use frame buffers which keeps the install in a standard (e.g., VGA) mode or the external monitor works with the display mode. Cheers, Dave -- Politics, n. RHEL 5 vs. CentOS 5

Hi all, I would like to first preface this e-mail by saying if this topic has been covered already, could someone point me to the month of the discussion and I will gladly read it. We have been using RHEL 3 / 4 in our environment and I am very happy and satisfied with the stability of the OS. Now with the new technologies incorporated into RHEL5, specifically Virtualization, Clustering, and Storage, and the costs associated with them, I was wondering how similar CentOS and RHEL 5 were. It is my understanding that CentOS is RHEL 5 with the RedHat icons removed but the functionality of the packages is the same. In addition, updates may come a day or two later than RHEL 5. My boss is a little concerned about the differences since we host production servers that require minimal downtime. Any thoughts and opinions are very welcome. Thank you for your input. Updating kernel from CentOS 5 to 5.1

To upgrade the kernel to CentOS 5.1 (to take advantage of support for Dell wireless card bcm43xx), should I update everything or just type 'yum update kernel', or what? Also, is it OK to remove 'old' kernels (which appear in the boot list) when they are no longer required? Thanks, Andy

Error 451 when clients try to send emails

RPM Spec and subpackage architecture

Are there any RPM wizards out there that know how to specify a different architecture for a subpackage in a spec file? I have a package that has a binary component and a non-binary component that I would like split into 2 packages one, the binary which is architecture dependant and the other 'noarch'. I haven't found a spec file that does this yet :-( Ross S. W. weird load values

Hi List, I'm stumped by this: load average: 10.65, 594.71, 526.58 We're monitoring load every ~3 minutes. It'll be fine (i.e. something like load average: 2.14, 1.27, 1.03), and then in a single sample, jump to something like the above. This seems to happen once a week or so on a few different servers (all running in a similar application). I've never seen the 1 minute sample spike as high as the 5 or 15 minute samples. Seeing as that last value is a 15 minute period, well, it doesn't seem possible that one can have a 500+ 15 minute sample without having observed a spike in the 5 minute sample at least 5 minutes before. Also, there aren't 500+ processes on these systems -- it's typically around 100 total processes (ps auxw | wc -l). (Is there a way to see the total count of kernel-level threads?) A few questions about remastering

Hi, I've searched all over Google, but couldn't find a proper answer to my needs. I've installed CentOS 5.1 only with the packages I need and then made a few of my own. Now, here's what I need: a) To integrate my self-made packages in a remasterized DVD; b) That the install process of the new version skips package choosing, i. e., when it reaches this stage it just installs all the packages of the new version; c) And last, but not the least, how to remasterize the new DVD with the original packages I've installed, plus the ones I've made. Is there such a filesystem available? It seems like it wouldn't be too hard to implement... Basically do things on a block by block basis. Store md5 of a block in the table, and when writing a new block, check if the md5 already exists and then point the new block to the old block. Since md5 is not guaranteed unique, might need to do a diff between the 2 blocks and if the blocks are indeed different, handle it somehow. When modifying an existing block that has multiple pointers, copy the block and modify the new block. I know I'm oversimplifying things a lot, but something like this could work, no? Hugh Cruickshank, you are not mistaken. SCSI drives do keep bad block information on the drive. I've also been using this for YEARS on SGI's under IRIX. Under IRIX, the command `fx' is used to partition SCSI drives, exercise them, format them (which is something one never does to SCSI drives), spare out bad blocks, list the bad block table, etc., etc.. -- Brent L. Greetings, First let me thank the gentleman who allayed my fears about CentOS 5.1's "yum update" download size. but all the same it turned out to be in megabytes. not to mention the k3b *roasted* couple of DVD's to uselessness and I am still giving explanations to the stupid ancient,retired, former stupid cretin bean counters masquerading as "managers" and "management Accountants" on. a piddly amount wasted. I found this thread in the GMANE list as I subscribed to this list rather late. Let me propose a solution: Let two nodes run the greatest ever CentOS 5.0 on two nodes. Let two nodes of the cluster run DRBD 0.8 and export block devices in Primary/Primary mode and the GFS be mounted on them. Let the NFS export be a managed service of the Cluster infrastructure from these nodes exporting the NFS on a cluster managed virtual IP as rw. let n (as permitted by the infrastructure) nodes import NFS as client on their nodes. and do the job I am seeing a 3-node cluster exactly that far past fes days and naturally, given the maturity of CentOS 5, do that for, hopefully, ever. Prevent kernel upgrade unless given dependencies satisfied

Dear List Members, Is there a way to prevent a kernel from being upgraded unless a list of given dependencies are satisfied? What I am getting at is sometimes updated kernels are available before the upgraded versions of the kernel modules in 'extras' are (ie drbd). If there were a way to list these modules as dependencies that must be satisfied before a kernel upgrade can be performed it would prevent a lot of pain around upgrade management. Thanks, Ross S. W. These are all good and valid issues. Thinking about it some more I might just implement it as a system service that scans given disk volumes in the background, keeps a hidden directory where it stores it's state information and hardlinks named after the md5 hash of the files on the volume. If a collission occurs with an existing md5 hash then the new file is unlinked and re-linked to the md5 hash file, if an md5 hash file exists with no secondary links then it is removed. Maybe monitor the journal or use inotify to just get new files and once a week do a full volume scan. This way the file system performs as well as it normally does and as things go forward duplicate files are eliminated (combined). Of course the problem arises of what to do when 1 duplicate is modified, but the other should remain the same... File system cache corruption with CentOS4?

Just wondering if anyone else has come across an issue where files cached in memory appear to become 'corrupted' - for example, on one workstation, I've just had the issue: # yum Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/yum", line 4, in ? import yum File "__init__.py", line 36, in ? File "repoMDObject.py", line 18, in ? strace'ing the process didn't show up anything obvious However, I ran a simple process that just grabs memory - which has the side effect of 'flushing' caches from memory. After, doing this, yum ran fine ... I've seen this issue quite a few times with various applications and on different machines - and flushing the caches in the way fixes the issue ... OK, it could be a real memory problem, but given the number of times I see this issue, on machines that are fine otherwise, it makes we wonder if it could be a cache issue ... All the machines are running a CentOS4.4 based kernel - (I plan to move to a CentOS4.6 based kernel when it is out). The kernel is not a vanilla CentOS4.4 kernel - it includes a few small non-standard patches - but nothing that touches the VFS layer (AFAIK). The issue occurs on i686 or x86_64 boxes. All machines have at least 4GB of memory. They also use the nVidia binary-only module. Anyone seen issues like this? Thanks James Pearson

smartd.conf get overridden

Yohoo! I have some issues with the smartd in CentOS5/x64 I edited the /etc/smartd.conf for my needs and restarted the smartd with "service smartd restart". But the start script is overriding my file. I have some devices on vlans that I see the dhcp discover messages and I see the dhcp offer then the device sends another dhcp discover. This goes on for a few times and the device just waits and starts the process over. I feel that the problem lies in the handling of arp requests but I guess I just don't know enough about how linux handles them or how to control them to find a solution. Any ideas ? Alan

I'm running RHEL/CentOS 3 (2.4.21-47.ELsmp) with Broadcom NIC and BASP bonding (bcm5700 v8.1.55) When network traffic is ~12MB/sec (== ~120K packets/sec) CPU system load is growing up to 50-60%%. Yes, I know, that small packets (~100 bytes/packet) are not optimal for network throughput, but in the short-middle term I cannot re-write our application. Are there any network driver / kernel parameters which can help me to increase network throughput? Replacing bcm5700 to tg3? Upgrading to RHEL 4 or 5 with kernel 2.6? Other ideas? Thanks, Vitaly

5.x install - loses display when launching anaconda

Hi all, Trying to install 5.0 or 5.1 (i386 or x86_64) on a new system from an install DVD. As soon as the installer launches anaconda, the screen shuts off and from this point I'm unable to switch to any other tty. This is an Intel core2duo machine on an Intel P35 chipset motherboard, Geforce 8400GS video card connected to a BenQ 20" widescreen LCD. Any ideas what could cause this behaviour or how to debug further (obviously I can't see any error messages as my virtual consoles are no loner available)? I think I'll try installing via a serial console when I get home and see if I have more success. Regards, Tom

rsync 5.1 base repo question

I have built my repo by copying the content of the ISO images, maintaining the date. When I test with: rsync -avun rsync://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5.1/os/i386/ \ --exclude=debug/ /repos/centos/5.1/os/i386 the only file listed is: CentOS/yum-kernel-module-1.0.4-3.el5.centos.2.noarch.rpm Which I did not get from the ISOs. but if I leave off the -u option, the list is VERY long. Why? Also do I need to use the --delete option to get rid of rpms replaced with newer versions?

I've experimented with the different terminal emulations (xterm, ansi, screen, linux, xterm-color etc) and found that: ansi = garbled screen. xterm = displays layout correctly, however highlight bars (in the index screen within mutt) only drawns a background colour when text is also drawn. xterm-color = displayis an issue is shown when using the up/down arrows over his posts. This corrupts the layout of the screen. usually a blank line is displayed below Mario's name. screen = same as xterm-color linux = same as xterm-color Does anyone know how I might be able to correct this? I have read multipe messages here from people upgrading from 5.0 to 5.1, presumably using "yum update" to do the deed. When I do "yum update" on my (I think) fully updated Centos 5 system I get no updates. Am I just being impatient (i.e., the updates haven't yet been pushed out) or am I somehow missing them? backups and md5 all in one while splitting

I'm trying to back up our svn repositories, and I found a nice little backup command line bzip's the backup and creates the md5 hash all in one: svnadmin dump --deltas /repo |bzip2 |tee dump.bz2 | md5sum >dump.md5 The problem is I need to split the backups, so this doesn't really work. Is there perhaps another way of piping things to allow for splitting of the backups? Currently I'm doing something like this svnadmin dump --deltas /repo |bzip2 |split - -b 64m cat *.bz2* | md5sum >dump.md5 Is there a way to do this all in one step? Russ

On my logwatch that I have emailed to me, I see a line where I'm showed logging in via a known ip address, and when I log in from my laptop through my EV-DO card wirelessly, the computer show log in as ok, but it can not translate the ip from the aircard and marks the log in as a possible hack attempt. I just downloaded solaris. They have two versions, the split DVD that comes with two 1.2GB zipped chunks and an exe which is 1.2GB but uncompresses to the full 2.5+GB. I found some info on them here: http://www.nosltd.com/nosso.html Any idea how they achieve such great compression? Looks like they're using a proprietary algorithm and don't offer any downloads. Also looks like it's windows only. Is there a linux/open source alternative out there? Russ

IO load takes IO wait into it's calculation, so it may be a writer process hammering the disks which are under powered for the IO load. Install CentOS based distro

Hi, I'm making a dedicated distribution based on CentOS 5.1 My doubt is about the installation of the "new" distro. I was thinking about a (K)ubuntu kind of way: the CD/DVD boots, a graphical interface appears with an "Install" button, just a click on it and then just wait to finish. Now, I'd like to avoid building RPMs for my added software. Is this possible this way ? Other suggestions are welcome. Any help would be appreciated. Warm Regards, Mário Gamito

yum update repo problems

Hi I noticed today that all my Centos servers are giving same error on "yum update". Error is: ---------------------------------- Loading "installonlyn" plugin Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories rpmforge 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5&arch=i386&repo=os error was [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')> Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base ---------------------------------- Servers are scattered around in different networks. Yum update has been workin OK on all of them. Centos 4.5 servers are giving similar error, but with less detail. Servers are relaying heavily on DNS for everyday work, so that should rule out DNS issues (all are running caching-nameservers). Is there any problem with repos? backup / compressed copy

Hi, I think about buying a NAS-server from Sun. To backup this server I want to use our central to-tape backup. For whatever reason ppl are asking me to make one compressed copy to disk and only backup this copy. So to reduce load I'd like to have a script that: identifies changed files only (using md5?) copies them and compresses them storeBackup.pl does something similar, but keeps versions and creates hardlinks between them. (Is storeBackup in any CentOS repo? I know it from my SuSE box) Any ideas? Do I have to change storeBackup to my needs? (Would really hate that, because I'm not a Perl man) regards, Andreas

HELP! Group info problem

I just tried an install from my local repo (boot from CD 1, use http method), and it failed right after entering the root password setting with: Unable to read group information from repositories. This is a problem with the generation of your install tree. Reboot So now what? Is there something I can just extract from the isos? (remember I did that rsync). Is this caused by running createrepo after I copied the CDs, and before I did the rsync -r (so perhaps my tree info files are newer than those on mirror.centos.org)? HELP?

I would like to know from the members of this list as to how much should a CentOs update size would be if I download a DVD ISO image and install with it (As it is a DVD download -- I can't use Bittorrent as I am sitting behind a firewall which I don't control -- takes more than 26 hours for download) regards Rajagopal

Question on syncing my local repo

I have read various howtos on setting up a local mirror of the Centos base and update repos. I think I have them, I have followed the directory tree that I see on mirrors.centos.org: centos/5.1/os/i386/ centos/5.1/updates/i386/ I set up the base tree by copying the ISOs to centos/5.1/os/i386/; interestingly centos/5.1/os/i386/isolinux/ has the ISOs, 2-6. Don't know how those got there.... Now my questions: I used the following rsync to populate centos/5.1/updates/i386/ rsync -av rsync://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5.1/updates/i386/ \ --exclude=debug/ /repos/centos/5.1/updates/i386 over 300mb was downloaded for the rpms directory. and then I updated centos/5.1/os/i386/ rsync -avu rsync://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5.1/os/i386/ \ --exclude=debug/ /repos/centos/5.1/os/i386 Not the inclusion of the -u option. I first did this with the -n option and not the -u option and noticed a lot of rpms to be downloaded for the base. I then added the -u and only one rpm. So this question is: when using rsync to mirror the base and update repos, should the -u option be used? Next for the web server. I tried to use thttpd, thinking I just needed a httpd server on this box to dish out the repos. But thttpd seems to refuse to use symlinks (I have the repos on their own partition), so I fell back to good old apache (running everything at default with a symlink to /repo/centos). So this question is: what is available in a nice, light, httpd server that can handle a symlink? Finally. I looked at mrepo, but it seems to be designed to serve the repos from the isos. I did not want to do that and thus rolled my own for now. So is there any value for me to go and use mrepo? Oh, and will I need createrepo anymore for the base and update repos? thanks! Finally a local repo. The cost of the downloads for upgrading to 5.1 supplied the push!

Outdated packages on 5.1

Hi, A package verification on recently CentOS 5.1 reveals that some packages is outdated comparing with the 5.0. Here are some examples: 5.0 5.1 tzdata-2007h-1.el5 tzdata-2007d-1.el5 libpng-1.2.10-7.1.el5_0.1 libpng-1.2.10-7.0.2 perl-5.8.8-10.el5_0.2 perl-5.8.8-10 The "updates" directory on CentOS 5.1 repository does not contain the latest versions of some packages available for 5.0. Help to restore mysql data on CentOS 5

Hi , Help is needed to restore mysql data This is the the setup. 2 Servers running on CentOS. one server has both apache an mysql. the other server only has mysql database. This server has about 12000 records in the database. Last week, It had about 6000 records. then, Someone has backed up these 6000 records to the web server. Now , We need to backup all 12000 records to the webserver. How to archive this task? If I restore these 12000 records to the web server, it already has 6000 records. Then, whall will happen? Shoud I override them? Remember, this is a PRODUCTION SERVER.. I should do it properly. I think I will have to do following steps. first, I will have to dump the mysql server backup from database server. This is the command I will have to enter from the database server. * mysqldump -u root -p databasename > database.txt* then, I will have to mount a flash drive and copy *database.txt* to the flash drive. Then, I will have to go to the web server and mount it there. Then, finnaly, I have to restore *database.txt* to web server as follows. *mysql -u root -p databasename < databas.txt* Am I RIGHT? Hi OK another issue trying to get X going on these boxes. It seems to be a HP issue but if anyone knows a solution that would be great. I am using the iLo interface and the hpmouse-1.1.0-73.noarch.rpm driver. As root i can startx and all is well, however when starting X as the oracle user it fails with the following error Exec fail for command "/opt/hp/hpmouse/hpmouse-helper" Permission Denied This is indeed only accessible by root it seems so does anyone know how non root users are supposed to use the mouse on HP boxes? thanks

CentOS 4.5 (RHEL 4.5) - x86_64 - Login issue

Hi Strange problem here i think but - I can ssh in to the box fine as root and other users eg oracle BUT i am trying to login to the console to install oracle using X but i cant and i see this in the logs hostname su(pam_unix)[20237]: session closed for user oracle and also hostname login[19841]: Module is unknown so the pwd is not accepted and the connection on the console terminated straight away. I have added this to my pam.d login file session required /lib/security/pam_limits.so So i presume this is what is causing the issue but does anyone know which module may be missing? # rpm -qa | grep pam pam_ccreds-3-3.rhel4.2 pam-0.77-66.21 pam_krb5-2.1.8-1 pam_smb-1.1.7-5 pam_passwdqc-0.7.5-2 thanks

Cannot boot after upgrading to Centos 5.1

My local centos mirror (ftp.crc.dk) failed to boot after having upgraded from centos 5.0 to 5.1 (i386). It just displays GRUB The cursor is positioned to the right of a space after GRUB, and no input is accepted. I've tried booting in rescue mode and run: chroot /mnt/sysimage grub-install /dev/cciss/c0d0 This completes without errors, but still it can't boot. It's a HP/Compaq Proliant ML370 with a smartarray 5312 controller. HELP! Can't build CentOS 5.1 kernel from source

I pulled down the kernel-2.6.18-53.el5.src.rpm source to build my usual custom kernel (adds NTFS wwrite support) and it does not build. Everyone, Looks like my Centos 5.0 mail server upgraded automatically last night to 5.1. It appears to have worked normally until about 16:00 CST when dovecot began to fail. I have rebooted the system to be able to use the 5.1 kernel, but dovecot still continues to fail. Has anyone else made this observation? My log entries are below Thanks in advance!!!! Silly question about 5.1

I just rebooted my desktop system to pick up the 5.1 kernel, etc. One oddity I noticed is that the contents of /etc/redhat-release still says: [root@bend etc]# cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 5 (Final) but: [root@bend etc]# rpm -q --whatprovides /etc/redhat-release centos-release-5-1.0.el5.centos.1 On my CentOS 4 box, /etc/redhat-release says: [dave@fraud ~]# cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 4.5 (Final) Shouldn't /etc/redhat-release on the CentOS 5 box say "5.1?" It is listed as a known issue, but I have a lot of 256Mb systems where I have used the graphic installer.... OUCH! And when this is fixed (I really hope), it will mean some new ISOs to download?

Hi, In November, upstream released RHSA-2007:1016-4 containing critical samba updates for v4. I see the CentOS released packages and announcement for ia64, but none for i386 or x86_64. Were they overlooked? Am I not looking right? Thanks! Marc.

Hi, I want to build a spam gateway for my mail server using postfix. I issued an rpm -e sendmail and got the following output: # rpm -e sendmail error: Failed dependencies: /usr/sbin/sendmail is needed by (installed) redhat-lsb-3.1-12.2.EL.el5.centos.i386 smtpdaemon is needed by (installed) mutt-1.4.2.2-3.el5.i386 smtpdaemon is needed by (installed) fetchmail-6.3.6-1.el5.i386 smtpdaemon is needed by (installed) mdadm-2.5.4-3.el5.i386 How does one replace sendmail with postfix (I am hoping to install from source using the latest version)? Local repository via createrepo assumes apache?

I am looking at the howtos for using createrepo to make a local repository. Like the one at: http://jazzz1s.blogspot.com/2007/10/creating-local-yum-repository-centos.ht… It seems that I need to run apache on the repository server. But I can basically run with defaults? All the howtos I have found address [base] and [update] but not others like [add-on] should those be set up as well?

The information at: http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS5.1 is great. Does RH have something that shows what has changed with them from 5.0 to 5.1? So far I have only found: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-5.1-Manual/manual/doc000.html Like what release of Firefox, etc.
