Hi, I'm wondering if there's a method for doing any of these 1. Check what's the physical memory available. free -m shows ~768 mem but I was sure that I had 1G of memory in there. 2. I check the kernel and it seems like the 4G split is in effect so it should map / correctly recognise there's 1G of Mem there. Is there any way to check besides opening up the machine to look at it physically??

fstab problem after a failed drive

Everyone, I installed a sata drive on a SuperMicro with SCSI drives. No problem with the installation. Everything went as expected as the os recognized the drive and assigned /dev/sdc to the new 300 gig Seagate drive. I had planned to use this drive for backup tarballs. The drive had been functional for about a week with no problems. Apparently it went out today when I tried to reboot the system. Now the boot process brings the system up into repair mode, but mounts the / partition in "read only" status. I can see that the original /dev/sdc is present but /dev/sdc1 is not present. I removed the drive completely and predictably /dev/sdc is no longer present. The problem I have now is that I have an entry in /etc/fstab that references the disabled drive that I am unable to change because I can only get to /etc/fstab in "read only" status. I am sure there is way to remove the entry to /dev/sdc1 but I have not been able to do so. Any help would be appreciated Greg Ennis

Hi I think I hit the cifs bug described at http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/WindowsShares and http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1776 As CentOS Wiki said, CentOS 5.0 do have a bug fixed cifs.ko, so I thought it should be in CentOSPlus repository ... so I upgrade my kernel and using 2.6.18-8.1.10.el5.centos.plus. I'm installing Fruity for Nagios using the 4.4 Single Server CD and want to force upgrade PHP 4 to PHP 5 without having to upgrade everything on CentOSplus. In order to install Nagios, I have to first enable RPMforge. However, to use Fruity, I have to use PHP 5, which isn't included in the RPMforge repository, unless I enable CentOSplus and yum update/upgrade everything (which I did eventually, just to get everything working). While in 4.x, I tried to enable *just* PHP with a command (something like) the following: yum --enablerepo=centosplus upgrade php* After doing so, however, I got all these errors saying that it couldn't update it b/c other things were needing updating (Pear, I think, was one of them). Perhaps this had to do with me installing RPMforge and using protect-plugins. Is there a way to force an update of, say, PHP and have also force an update on everything directly needed to install PHP? I don't mind everything directly associated to the one package I need being updated, but I'd prefer to peg the other programs and not let them update.

One user gets the gnome-session: 5212 error when he tries to log on. The error states that "Could not create /home/.gnome2/ Permission denied" and "Could not create ~/.gnome/ Permission denied" Any suggestions are welcomed...... I'm setting up a new CentOS 4.4 server to work with Fruity (a frontend program that operates Nagios). For security purposes, what chmod and chown settings do you put on the /var/www/html folders? Also, can anyone recommend any good LAMP hardening guides? While I'm not planning on putting this into production, I'd like to cover all my bases before that's an issue.

install freezes at partition layout

I'm trying to install centos 5 on an old machine, a Micron with a pentium III and 250 megs of ram. I'm using the DVD image. The media check said the DVD was OK. Everything starts fine (both in graphics and text modes), untl I get to the custom partition table. The new system will go on hda, with the boot and root partition reformatted (see below). I laid it out to preserve the data on /home and another two partitions with a lot of data on each. One of these is mounted as /proj but Anaconda shows it as a giant swap partition. After I'm done with the formatting and mount points, I say OK, and then nothing happens. I left it run for over an hour, and then bailed out. Before rebooting, I looked at the console messages. There were a couple of warnings but no indications of anything fatal. Just nothing for over an hour. I'm downloading a new image (actually the CDs) just in case the media's bad. I also suspect the partition layout may be a problem. It was done long ago on the first hard drive: /boot 100 megs / 10 gigs /home 10 gigs extended ... /proj 25 gigs /opt 10 gigs swap 500 megs Once the CDs are in, I'll try again. If it fails, I'll do a new partition table on the first hard drive -- I have everything backed up. If anyone has a better idea, or if I'm way off base, let me know. hda -> ST360021A, ATA 60 gig Seagate hdb -> Maxtor 6Y160L0, ATA 150 gig Thanks, Barry ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better Globetrotter. If you just want STDERR to get mailed to root (or wherever you specify), remove the "2>$1" from your cron entry. This is what instructs the shell to combine STDOUT with STDERR. Your cron entry should look like: backup.sh >>/var/log/backup.log >> /var/log/backup.log to append STDOUT output to backup.log. cron automatically mails any output from programs. Dear List, I want to run a rsync-ing script in cron, generating a very verbose -vv rsync log in a log file. The log file should combine both stderr and stdin, which is easy: backup.sh >>/var/log/backup.log 2>&1 However, I would like to propagate only stderr to cron - in case there has been an error, cron will mail me the assembled stderr output. I tried the following: $ (./backup.sh > /var/log/backup.log) 2>&1 | tee -a /var/log/backup.log which propagates the stderr to cron, but lines written to /var/log/backup.log are out of sequence - for example if the contents of backup.sh are: #!/bin/bash echo "out 1" >&1 echo "out 2" >&1 echo "out 3" >&1 echo "out 4" >&1 echo "err 5" >&2 echo "out 6" >&1 echo "out 7" >&1 echo "out 8" >&1 I get in /var/log/backup.log: out 1 out 2 out 3 out 4 out 6 out 7 out 8 err 5 I would like the lines in their initial sequence. Hi, I want to setup vsftp on centos 4.5. 2 types of ftp. they are active and pasive. What is the default type ftp type o CentOS ? Is is PASIVE ftp? in /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf, I found below line. What should I do for below line? # Make sure PORT transfer connections originate from port 20 (ftp-data). connect_from_port_20=YES Should I COMMENT it out? I need a very secure ftp service. I've done something a while back that has messed with my named.conf and prevents me from restarting named service normally... CentOS5 Network Problems

I have a very odd problem connecting to some websites from my CentOS 5 box Target websites: www.connecttech.com www.3ware.com (two of my HW vendors) I can usually get some kind of response, but if the content (download or page itself) is larger in size (downloads never pass 100K), then it hangs... When I fire-up wireshark, I get a lot of ougoing highlighted Checksum Errored packets but I don't know what's causing it... Here's what I've eliminated thus far: - Websites are up and responsive - Cable(s) is fine - Network drop is fine - I put myself behind a firewall to make sure it wasn't my network - Network card has been switched - Driver has been switched - Removed any firewall - wget has problems as well - Other computers on the same network work fine. Sites like maps.google.com work just fine... I'm open to any suggestion at this point. I'm completely lost. - G.

logrotate /var/log/maillog

Hi, I want to create a new log /var/log/maillog for postfix each day and so i created a new logrotate config for the log and removed it from /etc/logrotate.d/syslog. ~]# cat /etc/logrotate.d/maillog /var/log/maillog { daily rotate 31 start 1 compress create 0600 root postrotate /etc/init.d/postfix reload > /dev/null endscript } After /var/log/maillog has rotated, postfix doesn't log anything to the new log file till i restart syslog. It doesn't matter if i reload or restart postfix. Is this a normal behaviour with this log file and if yes why? Thomas

iptables question

Chroot tool

Hi, Currently I'm working on building chroot environment for a several users. The needs of those users are different, so the binaries and their libraries are differents too. The building process tends to be so tedious. Supposedly, if one uses SMTP Authentication, this problem goes away. However, I have always used SMTP Authentication. I do not want to change to another web hosting ISP, because this problem might follow me. And, I've been with them for almost 6 years. Hi, I am facing a task of choosing vpn server. I do not know which is better. The one distributed with CentOS4.5 only supports pppd (or maybe pptp but I cannot find it). If* *I want to use PPTP or L2TP, which one should I choose? OpenVPN? Poptop? Thanks.

Hello, I am having a small issue with LDAP, and I hope someone here might be able to provide a few tips. best source for rpmdevtools RPM in C5

hello, I'm going to try this question again. The first time I botched it and the answers I got were useless. I want to use rpmdevtools to help with some packaging chores. There is no C5 version that I can find. I've located an SRC RPM in a location that is known to be C5 compatible. There are 2 versions of rpmdevtools: http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/6/SRPMS/rpmdevtoo… http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/6/SRPMS/rpmdevtoo… naturally I grabbed the highest version (6.1) and rebuilt it for EL5. The installation halted, missing a version of rpm-build higher than the base version in C5. It seems that rpm-build 4.4.2.1+ comes from FC7. This is the first time that I've seen an FC6 repo package that depended on something from FC7. rpmdevtools 5.3.1 builds, installs, and works fine on C5. I think I made the right decisions here (balking at trying to install a higher version of rpm-build). If you need to use rpmdevtools, how would you approach the problem? 2 nics, 2 networks, 2 switches

Hi Everyone, I have a server with two NICs. One NIC is already configured for network A, but the second is disabled at the moment. I want to enable it too, but put it on network B. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that. Well, what I've tried hasn't worked anyway. Each NIC is plugged into a separate switch, and each network has it's own gateway. But, I can only set one default gateway. What parameters do I need to use in the NIC config file to force NIC 1 to use gateway 1, and NIC 2 to use gateway 2? I tried using "GATEWAY=blah" in each config file (ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-eth1), but it didn't work. I'm over looking something. Setting up RAID using mdadm on a proliant DL320 G4

Hi, I have a new server HP proliant DL320 G4, with two 160 GB SATA hdds.. I have installed CentOS 4.5 with mdadm without any problem, but when I disconnect one disk the server does not boot or I received a kernel panic when booting... I have disabled the SATA embeded raid (BIOS) and nothing.. I've also download the driver from HP site HP (Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver Diskette for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (x86)). and nothing it does not recognize the driver from HP... does anybody knows how to setup a software linux RAID on a proliant DL320 G4? thanks in advance regards, Israel

Hi , I am using Centos 5 for virtualization , i have installed Centos 5 as Host OS and trying install Centos 5 as a guest OS but system is stuck at final screen Starting Install process. This may take saveral minutes...... and its not doing anything else after that i am waiting for at leat 30-40 minutes. Server Virtualization

Hello, I work for a school in a New Zealand university and we are wanting to implement Server Virtualization for both CentOS and Windows systems. So I thought I would ask here what experience people have had with this and what issues that you all think should be considered? From my own research it seems that VMWare or Xen are really the two major products to be considered, are there any others I should be considering ? Is anyone running Linux "Guest" O/S's inside a Windows host ?? And if so can you share your reasons for this? Anyway thank you for your time and any experiences / knowledge you are willing to share :)

Reconfiguring gnome desktop

Please - how do I reconfigure my gnome desktop (CentOS 4.4) to get back my application icons and workspaces? Something's changed in the settings so that there are no workspaces shown in the panel and applications "disappear" off the screen when applications (eg Evolution, Mozilla etc) are minimized! When I log in as root, it's all still there OK! Any help appreciated - thanks Andy

Disabling shutdown and suspend for normal users

Hi, [CentOS 5] What is the best way to remove the shutdown and suspend options from menu's for normal users? After googling around, I added "SystemMenu=false" to the greeter section in /etc/gdm/custom.conf. After that the GDM login screen still shows the options, but 'restart' indeed doesn't work anymore. However, the gnome menu's when logged in, still have the 'suspend' options, which still leads to a hanging (unwakeble) machine. hello, I'm suprised that an SRC.RPM from the rhel5 repo needs a file from FC7. How to mount a remote file system to another linux box

Hi, I have applied traffic shaping on firewall running CentOS 4.5. eth1 is the device where I have done traffic shaping. I am now running some monitoring tools such as polltc and tc-graph.pl. They generate graphs. These graphs are updated every 10 seconds. They have been saved on the firewall it self. To view thsese graphs, I have to enable apache on firewall it self. But I do not need to run apache on firewall as I will have to open port 80. I only have opened port 22 to the WORLD. I want to go that way. I have a web server running CentOS 4.4 @ LAN. I can view those graphs via this web server , if I can mount those graphs to this web server. my firewall has 3 nics. eth2 is 192.168.101.254 connected to the LAN. my web server @ LAN is 192.168.101.35 How can I achieve this ? filtering ssh regardless of the port

Postfix Questions

I've been running sendmail since the beginning of my online time. 1. Did I see that postfix can run sendmail milters? 2. If so, did I read that postfix can run these separately for inbound vs. outbound? 3. Can it run like a rbl blacklist on inbound and not outbound? 4. If the above is true, does this require separate configurations of postfix or is it already set to allow this out of the box? My reasoning... I've added a few milters which has drastically cut spam due to the extra time spent at the smtp level. For instance, running spamassassin takes a couple or few seconds. This bit of delay does in fact seem to stop many of the slamming spambots sort of like the design of milter-greylist. Except, I don't have to send a temp fail. So, this is a good thing. The negative is it also takes longer for my users to send mail as it is processed the same way during outgoing. Also, we run the SpamHaus blacklist. This works pretty good for inbound, but from time to time one of our hosting clients winds up on the blocklist because they are on a dynamic IP and someone else has recently used it for spamming. One could argue that my client should then go remove their IP from the blacklist to better insure their email actually makes it through any other level of spam filtering on other ISPs. But, that's a rosey concept! So, I would prefer to do it at the smtp level inbound so I can actually reject that mail while not having the embarrassing blocking going on with our users. Yes, this might sound like a double standard, but we do not provide connection service so only very rarely (never so far) does any virus actually send spam through our systems from client applications and I do actually monitor email all the time and stop any spamming immediately. Application icons don't appear in taskbar at bottom of display - they disappear out of bottom right corner!

Running CentOS 4.4 and something drastic appears to have happened with my display setup - application icons no longer appear in taskbar at bottom of display (when minimized) but disappear off bottom right-hand corner. So it's difficult to multi-task because I have to keep re- opening applications - can anybody suggest what I need to reconfigure please because I can't find any obvious display setting which will cure this problem - thanks. dual boot w/WinXP

Hi folks, I've been asked advice in an area that I'm not well versed and am hoping for some help. Having read a recent thread where booting to anaconda's kickstart wiped a partition table unexpectedly (to the user...it did what it was configured to do), I'm following the 'measure twice, cut once' rule and asking if this is possible and if so, what is best practice: I have a working WinXP SP2 workstation with an unused partition on the primary HDD. I'd like for the unused area to be used for dual booting CentOS5 but am not sure what needs to be done (if anything) to the config file for kickstart prior to booting with CD1 in the drive. Any suggestions or pointers to docs I may have missed are greatly appreciated. Best regards, ~Ray

program to monitor USB keys

I wrote a small program to monitor keyboards found on /dev/input/event* It works great but I always get EAGAIN from my read() function. google says this is normal when open() is used and O_NONBLOCK mode. I know this is slightly offtopic but I was wondering if the centos gurus that also program know anything about this. My goal was to not be eating CPU cycles with a small program that just monitors key presses. With EAGAIN always coming in the process though small keeps waking up. Or perhaps there is another way to do this that I am not aware of. Thanks for any tips. yum kernel update problem

On the subject of kernel updates: I had my install kernel (2.6.18-8.el5xen) and 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen on the box. I was unable to originally boot the update (8.1.8xen) because of the 3ware driver issues (I needed to use a driver floppy at install time). I jumped through some hoops (which I am struggling to understand) with weak-updates to get the 2.6.18-8.1.8 kernel to see my raid devices, which worked (technology beyond my ken is indistinguishable from magic :-). I had a system which booted either kernel and ran fine, and thought I would be able to update kernels with impunity from now on. I ran the yum update, which updated the kernel along with other things. When it ran, it removed my install kernel (2.6.18-8.el5xen). I now have 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen and 2.6.18-8.1.10.el5xen. The 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen kernel still works fine, but the 2.6.18-8.1.10.el5xen kernel does NOT see my raid devices. I have a couple of questions: Why did it remove my perfectly functioning install kernel? How can I stop it from doing this? Do I need to re-install the whole OS to get it back (since I needed a driver disk at install time to make it work properly)? I must admit this wasn't expected behavior (at least not by me). Multiple IP Address

I'm hoping that someone on this list can shed some light on how Linux/CentOS decides which IP address to report when a Windows desktop attempts to access it via SAMBA/WINS. The CentOS system in question is running a single NIC and OpenVPN which adds two additional virtual NICs. This is a backup system, there is another CentOS system that acts as the primary VPN server. The local NIC is 10.44.0.0/24, the virtual NICs are 10.55.5.0/24 and 10.55.6.0/24, respectively. If a Windows Desktop on the local network attempts to contact this CentOS server, it is given its 10.44.0.x address. If a Windows Desktop is VPN connected to the primary CentOS VPN server, with a 10.55.3.x address, it is given this CentOS server's 10.55.6.x address. It seems the IP address of the requester is being taken into account, perhaps looking for the closest subnet match? Ultimately I'd like the CentOS system to always report its 10.44.0.x address. Is there anyway to force this behavior? Brett

Compiling mod_webauth on CentOS 5 - krb dependency failure

Is there an RPM missing? Installation troubles

I have a new machine I'm trying to install Centos 5.0 on and I'm not getting very far. The system is 2 dual core xeons (5160, 3.0 GHZ) w/ 8GB ram. It has two 320 GB disks on the motherboard controller (Supermicro X7DAE+), and 8 750 GB disks on a 3ware 9650SE-8ml, pcie (x4) controller card. The 8 disks are set up as two raid 5 volumes (4 disks each). There is a scsi card in the machine w/ nothing attached to it. The graphics card is na NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500 (pci express x16). The intent is to install the OS onto the 2-320GB drives on the motherboard controller (preferrably in a raid 1 configuration). The other disks are for our data requirements. 1)I used bit torrent (azureus on windows) to download the dvd iso for Centos 5.0, and it completed without any errors. I believe it does the checksumming verification automatically. I also ran sha1sum against the image, and it came out fine. 2)I burned the image to a dvd using roxio. No errors. When I couldn't get down the road, I burned another copy with no errors. 3)During the install, I verified the media with no errors for both of the disks. 4)I downloaded the driver for this OS and raid card from AMCC-3ware site and made a driver floppy. 5)I booted the dvd and ran "linux dd" to do the install. Should the graphical installer work on an nvidia quadro fx1500 graphics card? At the present it doesn't appear to work for me, I get hash all over the screen, once X starts. 6)I booted the dvd again and ran "linux text dd". I verified my dvd media without problems, and it reads the driver floppy and loads the 3w-9xxx driver. It asks questions about lang, kbd and timezone. 7)For partitions, I selected custom, created a /boot, /, swap and /home on the first 320 GB disk (it turns out to be sdc, with sda and sdb being the big raid volumes). After the grub section (I told it to put grub on the /boot partition) the screen is blue, and it just sis without any further response (I left it over night, so it should have finished). 8)If I press alt-f3, the last thing I see is: 13:18:16 INFO : Moving (1) to step reposetup 9)If I press alt-f4, the last thing I see is: <5>SQUASHFS error : sb_bread failed reading block 0x6acc <5>SQUASHFS error : unable to read page, block 1aaa0d9, size 9154 8)I'm at a loss as to what to try next, or how to find out what is wrong. thanks in advance for any and all help, -chuck By the Way, a knoppix 3.8 live cd will boot and run fine on the hardware.

nVdia C15G chipset and GeForce 6100 on board graphix controller

Hi, Apologies for the long post - but I'm being driven crazy by this problem. A while ago I built a new server that is intended to serve as a Xen server running multiple DomU systems used a test environments for systems that I am working on. The host Xen system will be CentOS 5 as will some of the DomU systems. The systems will all be hardware virtualized. The motherboard uses the nVidia C15G chipset and the onboard graphix controller is recognised as a GeForce 6100. I am having problems getting the Video and mouse to work properly with CentOS 5 - both with as set of CD's downloaded when CentOS 5 was first released and with a DVD obtained from one of the local distro shops. The symptoms are that the Video is run in 800X600 mode and the mouse pointer works while the system is booting and while I am logging in to a GUI session. Once the login process has completed the mouse pointer disappears (is not visible at all). The mouse does however work as you can see changes to the Icons and menus on screen when moving the mouse around (blindly). The same situation obtains when running the system with FC7 installed. However when I boot the system using a Knoppix 5.1.1 live disk the Video resolution is 1024X768 and the mouse works properly. I attach the output of lspci and lsmod from both CentOS and Knoppix as well as the X86 Config file from Knoppix. Could someone please advise me on how to get CentOs to give the same results with the video and mouse as Knoppix. Hi Chaps, A couple of Sun Netra t105 have been donated to the CentOS Project. The machines are located in London and I was wondering if anyone in the area might be able to host these machines for us ? They come with 19" rack rails. We would need access to some - but not a whole lot of - bandwidth. We plan on using these machines in developer roles, for code testing and sandbox builds. Q1: Is it possible different users to have different language interfaces (menus etc) on the same machine under X.Org (GNOME or KDE)? Q2: Is it possible to have more than one X.Org sessions running on the same machine, so as different users to log in at the same time, and switch between users X.Org sessions (one using GNOME, other using XFCE) by using the usual Ctrl-Alt-Fx keys? Automatic FTP problem in cron

Dear Concerns, I have backup script which TAR the data, makes one copy on local hardisk and then FTP to another machine. Last few days i m facing problem with it. The cron job only makes the copy automatically on local disk but doesnot automatically FTP to another machine. I ran the script manually, the script runs successfully. For trouble shooting i displayed the output in some file and shown this error: Cron Entry is : */5 * * * * /opt/bin/ftp.sh 2> /tmp/error_log "/opt/bin/ftp.sh: line 3: ftp: command not found" Please help me out of this problem. Dear Concerns, I would like to share a very strange problem. I am from Pakistan/Islamabad. Last month i was on trainning from Askari Bank Limited (Juniper). Here in Askari i m running NMS--> MRTGs using CentOs 4.4. On trainning i recieved a call from collique saying "when i "su -l" NMS says "root user doesnot exist". and also MRTGs not working. well i was amazed how was it possible. In the Evening i came back to office. I boot the machine in single user mode and type the command; less /etc/passwd here when i found that user root existed, but the only thing that was amazing is; the spelling of root was changed from "root" to "R00t". i changed to "root" and every thing worked. I want to ask, what is this, this doesnot seem a garbage value or nor corruption of passwd file. only showing someone changes this. Here we have bank private network, only two people have access for it me and another guy. what are your opinions?????? Please also share your strange experience. vsftp and nonpriv_user option question

thhis didnt go through completely the first time. I am a bit confused as to how this works. I created a local unpriveleged user (with /bin/nologin shell). i uncommented the line containing nopriv_user=ftpsecure and restarted vsftp. I am confused as to what is supposed to happen. Shuld the daemon /usr/sbin/vsftpd be run as root or should it be ftpsecure? Or is the account only used to login to transfer files? Hi all, I've had this error rear it's ugly head again and I'm not exactly sure why. The output in /var/log/message is: crond[14764]: pam_loginuid(crond:session): set_loginuid failed opening loginuid crond[14765]: pam_loginuid(crond:session): set_loginuid failed opening loginuid crond[14811]: pam_loginuid(crond:session): set_loginuid failed opening loginuid crond[14842]: pam_loginuid(crond:session): set_loginuid failed opening loginuid This seems to happen every 5 minutes. Probably caused by the cacti cron jobs running. It looks to have started after the last krb5 updates - however this could be coincidence. $ cat crond # # The PAM configuration file for the cron daemon # # auth sufficient pam_rootok.so auth required pam_env.so auth include system-auth account required pam_access.so account include system-auth #session required pam_loginuid.so session include system-auth I commended out pam_loginuid.so - as I remember reading somewhere that this was the cause of this issue, however it hasn't made a difference this time... I'm looking to clarify this entry I found in a changelog(line 2062ish) on a CentOS 5 box for Apache 2.2.3 *) mod_include no longer allows an ETag header on 304 responses. PR 19355. [Geoffrey Young <geoff apache.org>, André Malo] Loading the mod_include module prevents any ETags headers from being sent from the box. If I comment out mod_include, ETags are sent as expected. CentOS 4 2.0.59 with mod_include does not show the same behavior, and ETags are sent both with and without mod_include loaded. If anyone can tell me the correct behavior, and if I need to file a bug I'd apreciate it. My assumption was anyfiles with an  statement would not get an ETag, but regular html without includes would be fine. Best Patrick

Hello List, I need to access some data a MS-SQL server ie run a stored procedure or user-defined function or a select every so often maybe 3 times a day. Have centos 4.5 on intel xeon. Is there an obvious certain-to-succeed approach? perl DBI + ODBC spings to mind, have not tried it yet - cannot access the systems yet - need to make a good plan. Am a bit concerned cos I dont know of an alternative to perl DBI + ODBC and I have heard a few anecdotes about how ODBC possibly problematic.. Any suggestions gratefully received and would be pleased to read the nice manual (if one is identified!). Tony

I installed postfix and removed sendmail. # LANG=en_US man mailq fopen: No such file or directory Cannot open man page /usr/share/man/man1/sendmail.1.gz No manual entry for mailq # zcat /usr/share/man/man1/mailq.postfix.1.gz .so man1/sendmail.1 Solved replacing with ".so man1/sendmail.postfix.1". Hi, I attempted to ugprade glibc & glibc-devel and ended up removing them entirely by accident. *idiot* What are the steps needed to get glibc back onto my system. Absolutely nothing is working at the moment, rpm, yum, etc. I presume I'm going to have to boot from a rescue CD of some kind. If someone could outline how to do this, or point me to some docs I would be most grateful. (CentOS 4.3) LC.

Hi, I've got a couple of servers that are running WBEL4 that I would like to upgrade to CentOS4. I noticed that there is a FAQ which explains how to upgrade WBEL3 to CentOS3, but haven't found anything similar for WBEL4. Are the instructions for the WBEL3 upgrade the same for WBEL4? question on alias IPs using ifcfg-eth0:x

When using ifcfg-eth0:x files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/, should each file (where x increments appropriately) point to DEVICE=eth0:x or DEVICE=eth0:0? I apparently have my alias files all ifcfg-eth0:0 - ifcfg-eth0:7 show DEVICE=eth0:0. Is this right? It seems odd to me and while it does seem odd, the alias IPs are being appropriately responded to, answering pings and nameserver requests. The output of /sbin/ifconfig is what clued me in to the fact that I may well have done this wrong. This output showed eth0 and eth0:0 only. Suggestions are welcome and much appreciated. As per the the tftpd man, I've added the "-c" option into the /etc/ xinetd.d/tftp (as follows) but I still cannot get write access (unless the file is already present). yum proxy username with @ character

Hi, I am having problem with setting up the proxy for yum correctly. I have got no influence on proxy policy or authentication methods. The proxy username contains the '@' character. My question is if there is any way how to enter the username correctly into the yum.conf. I tried many ways but has not been successful yet. Many thanks, David

Bypassing firewall alternatives

Hi I am experiencing a problem of bypassing firewalls. I know that "ssh -R" can forward ports from remote server to local ports. But it requires an account of the remote server, which seems to be a security hole. I am looking for other programs which can do so, any suggestions? Thanks.

NFS and iptables issues

I've got a newly installed Centos 5.0 box, planned to replace an ageing server (solaris box). I've set up the nfs shares, but the other solaris boxes won't mount them, unless I turn of iptables on the Centos box. If I do that, they mount, and all operations tested to date work fine. Iptables is allowing the 2049 tcp and udp ports already. What else needs to be opened up in iptables for nfs to work through the firewall? I looked at the RHEL system admin guide on NFS and found nothing useful. thanks, -chuck

backing up with dump and DLT

Hi, I have a CentOS 4.1 (with a two hdds RAID 1 using mdadm) running some database system.... I connected a DLT device on its SCSI interface (/dev/nst0) in order to make some external backup..... I always received this error when dumping (ACLs in inode won't be dumped) Please, I'm now looking in google but I'd like to hear your opinion about this error... Is the DLT devide broken? Kickstart install surprise

I have to say that I was more that a bit surprised, if not to say dismayed when I booted a system with CentOS 5 installed to test a kickstart CD in interactive mode, took it to the custom partitioning screen, then rebooted without saving anything only to come up with a grub prompt, and the disk's partition table wiped. The ks.cfg file did say to wipe the disk when installing, but I would expect that it wouldn't do this in interactive mode until one told it to start the installation. I have been installing Linux systems for well over a decade, starting with Caldera Network Desktop 1.0, all versions of Caldera through 2001, and SuSE from 8.1 through SLES10, and never have I seen an installation procedure that would write to anything on the hard drive without asking first. Hi, Does anyone know how I can find out if an ibm serveraid 8k sas storage controller (zero channel RAID) is a real hardware RAID controller and supported in the standard CentOs kernel or is it a fake raid controller. CentOS has been distributing the Enterprise version of MySQL as part of our CentOS Web Stack that is in the CentOSPlus repository of CentOS-4 for quite a while. http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories/CentOSPlus/CentOSWebStack MySQL has recently changed it's policy concerning the distribution of it's Enterprise Sources (they no longer distribute them as a tarball): http://www.linux.com/feature/118489 CentOS has also had problems getting Red Hat to distribute their GPL'ed SRPM to us for the Enterprise MySQL version of their Red Hat Web Application Stack (due to an agreement between MySQL and Red Hat): https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230412 However, as you have come to expect from the CentOS project ... we did not take these answers to mean that we would not be able to get the Enterprise Sources for MySQL and distribute enterprise grade RPMS to our customers. I would like to publicly thank Proven Scaling, LLC <http://www.provenscaling.com/> (and specifically Jeremy Cole) for continuing to provide the GPL'ed tarball in question. Because of their efforts and because of the organization that they contribute to known as Dorsal Source <http://www.dorsalsource.org/> we will continue to be be able to easily provide the CentOS community with updated enterprise RPMS for MySQL. I would also like to personally recommend Proven Scaling, LLC for any and all MySQL related work that you might need to have accomplished, they are good people :D That said, the latest version of MySQL that we are building for the CentOS Web Stack has a package called mysql-cluster. It was added upstream in version 5.0.40 of the upstream product and this (mysql-cluster-5.0.48-1.el4.centos.i386.rpm and mysql-cluster-5.0.48-1.el4.centos.x86_64.rpm) is it's first appearance in the CentOS Web Stack. The mysql-cluster files are produced by adding this switch to the compile mysql configuration statement: --with-ndbcluster For information about how you would use mysql-cluster, please see this mysql documentation: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-cluster.html This new mysql-cluster package is not required for normal mysql operations, and will be available also for CentOS-5 from the testing repository soon. I use Xlite sotphone to talk. I can register. it says user ready. I can dial extentions as well. Migrating from RHEL5 to CentOS-5 -- little report

Hi, Starting with http://wiki.centos.org/FAQ/CentOS3 I wanted to test how to migrate my x86_64 machine from in installed RHEL5 (fully updated) to the current CentOS5 without reinstalling. The steps I had to do were: 1. steps in RHEL5: a. yum clean all b. installing RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5.htm from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/ (by rpm) c. installing by rpm from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/os/x86_64/CentOS/ the rpm's centos-release centos-release-notes redhat-logos yum partially I had to use the --force option for rpm. d. Trying yum upgrade. This step failed with the error msg: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Error Message: Your account does not have access to any channels matching (release='5', arch='x86_64-redhat-linux') If you have a registration number, please register with it first at http://www.redhat.com/apps/activate/ and then try again. Error Class Code: 19 Error Class Info: Architecture and OS version combination is not supported. Explanation: An error has occurred while processing your request. If this problem persists please enter a bug report at bugzilla.redhat.com. If you choose to submit the bug report, please be sure to include details of what you were trying to do when this error occurred and details on how to reproduce this problem. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I found out that files in /etc/sysconfig/rhn were responsible for this behaviour, so i uninstalled rhn-client-tools (from RHEL5) using the --justdb option and moving /etc/sysconfig/rhn to /etc/sysconfig/rhn.bak. Because /etc/sysconfig/rhn belongs to the centos-release package too, I made a re-install of this package. e. Now I could run yum upgrade which upgraded my system to CentOS-5 without any error msg. f. reboot into CentOS 2. Steps in CentOS a. the grub entries in /boot/grub/menu.lst were not updated: The title commands had to be changed to Centos, but re-installing the kernel had the same effect. b. Booting into initmode 5 and trying a graphical login failed because of missing themes (/usr/share/gdm/themes/CentOSCubes/CentOSCubes.xml) which belong to the redhat-artwork package. After reinstalling this package all OK. 3. The time I needed for migrating: about 15 Min. I think this time may be reduced if all pitfalls are known _before_ starting the migration. Any issues? Hi, I was asking about php 5.2 because I would like to use this program with these requirements: http://www.magentocommerce.com/system-requirements This ecommerce store is built with the zend framework and requires php 5.2. Mcrypt is not in the centos mirrors either. I did manage to get this beta ecommerce store installed on php 5.1.6-12 by removing the mycript line in the install xml file and also changing the initial install page code to not be less than 5.1 I wouldn't think this would be good to do for a production program. I would prefer to stay with the centos mirror as this is what I have setup. Hopefully centos will have php 5.2 in the future. Thanks! Unable to POST after suspend

Hi, I just tried the live CD for CentOS 5.0 on a desktop computer and decided to see if suspend worked. It seems it did, but I'm unable to start the machine again. It's a DIY system with an Asus K8V-X motherboard[1], an AMD Clawhammer 3200+ and 1 GB of Kingston ECC RAM. The system has been perfectly stable despite being utterly abused on a daily basis for almost 3 years. I've tried: - unplug power cord - reset CMOS - remove BIOS battery - remove all RAM When resetting the CMOS, the CPU FAN and hard drives power up, which it has never done before (IIRC). This is the only way I can get anything to power on, there's no reaction whatsoever when I hit the power or reset buttons. Please don't tell me that clicking a button in a GUI menu has broken my favourite testing PC permanently. Any hints would be very appreciated.
