CentOS 4 vs 5 for VMware?

For stability reasons, I'm running CentOS 4 for VMware (it's the devil I know). Are there any compelling reasons to upgrade to CentOS 5 for it? I'm relatively new to the whole virtualisation scene and perhaps there are some updated packages that might be good for VMware?

Simple fix, Adaptec & CentOS = :-( LSI & CentOS = :-) We spent a few days trying to get Adaptec cards working with LTO-3 drives. It was suggested to me from this list to try an LSI, we bought one, it worked, problem solved. Thanks Fabian, There seem to be a number of different ways of installing the ipw2200 firmware and as I've said already I've tried puttting the .fw files into the firmware directory - why doesn't this work? What is actually the best/recommended way of installing the firmware in CentOS 5 please? - not too complicated please as I'm a linux enthusiast but not a great expert! help with samba and ldap on centos 5

Hi everyone; I'm having some trouble with samba on a centos 5 box; the box has been configured to authenticate against an ldap server via authconfig....authentication for normal use (console, ssh) works great....I'm having some trouble with samba using single ldap users or local users....It's rather weird, shares in which access restrictions are based upon ldap groups are working fine, getent group shows local and ldap groups, however attempting to assign access to a share for either a single ldap user or a local user doesn't work, and produces the following error when trying to hit the share: smb_pam_passcheck: PAM: smb_pam_auth failed - Rejecting User myuser1 ! For local users, I've added local os accounts as well as accounts in the samba database with smbpasswd Any ideas? Thanks for your help. Aaron

Stability issues with Dovecot imap-login in Centos 5?

I wonder if other people are seeing stability issues with Dovecot and imap-login against LDAP? I've changed from pam_nss to ldap without nss in Dovecot to see if that helps the issue. I realise Dovecot is version 1.0 in Centos 5, would it be more advisable to switch to Cyrus? I'm using mbox mail spool files would that work with Cyrus? Chris

how to find out which is the system disk by bios?

hi, how can i know which is the system disk by bios? i've pc with 2 sata disk connected to the on board sata controller and 2 other connected to a pci card sata controller. bios see all disk as well as linux, but in linux kernel sda and sdb is the pci card's 2 disks and the on board controllers are sdc and sdd. my problem is centos install the system by default to sda and intall grub in the system disk's mbr (ie. sda's mbr). which is right most of the time, but in my case the system is not boot after the install since grub (and the os) it's not on the system disk where the bios try to find it. ok after i recognize it i can choose sdc during install and install the whole system there, but the worse thing is that i'd like to do it from a kickstart file _automaticaly_. so i have to somehow discover which disk will be choosen by the bios as system disk? or which disk is connected to the on board controller and which is the pci extension card? how can i find out this information (eg. by a shell script in kickstart %pre section)? and this scripts should have to work for all kind of motherboard and sata card too:-) thanks. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

I wouldn't use any other file system than XFS as it is the most reliable file system out there. We've been using XFS on a x86 system for over a year now and haven't had any file system problems. It has actually saved us on occasion. From what I've read, people have only reported problems when they pile layer upon layer of stuff on their disks. Logical volumes, NFS, etc., etc.. We are using XFS on RAID drives, both RAID 1 and 0, and the only extra item we add is NFS. ipw220 wireless firmware for CentOS 5

OK, I've downloaded and unzipped the firmware files in ipw2200-fw-3.0.tgz - so I have 4 files: ipw2200-bss.fw, ipw2200-ibss.fw, ipw2200-sniffer.fw and LICENSE.ipw2200-fw, all of which I've placed in the /lib/firmware directory. Unfortunately, the instructions in README.ipw2200 and INSTALL are not clear as to what to do next. I'm using CentOS 5 on my (Dell) laptop so setting-up wireless networking should be reasonably straightforward - shouldn't it? Any help much appreciated - I'm a real linux fan, but it grieves me to say that, in this case, "wireless works much better in Windows XP!" replicate centos installation

Since neither anaconda nor system-config-kickstart can give a list of all packages that has been installed, waht is the recommended way to replicate one system for another new installation (without using hd cloning) ? Is it possible to simply do 'rpm -qa >> my-ks.cfg' ? When running anaconda installer, it gives system selection as well as package grouping (desktop vs server -> gnome vs kde -> gnome-pilot etc), which file provides these info? Thanks! --beast

CentOS vs RedHat releases

In comparing CentOS to RedHat releases, it seems to me CentOS is the Desktop/Workstation class distro from RedHat. Does the CentOS project then not have a Server class distro, or am I missing something? Granted, most any operating system can act as a server, but there are some fundamental components of a server-class OS that help is stand out versus a workstation version. Thanks for any insights. New CentOS DNS Server woes

Hi folks, I've put my new DNS server in place, told the primary that this IP would be pulling zones and restarted BIND on the primary. I configured my named.conf file to pull zones from the primary, started BIND on the new box. Here's where I get confused ++++++++++++++++++++++++ [root@sunspot etc]# /etc/init.d/named status number of zones: 169 debug level: 0 xfers running: 0 xfers deferred: 0 soa queries in progress: 0 query logging is OFF recursive clients: 0/1000 tcp clients: 0/100 server is up and running +++++++++++++++++++++++ So the new BIND sees the conf file and recognizes that there are 169 zones (test group) to pull. nothing comes over. I tailed the /var/log/messages and I see about 169 <g> of these: Aug 5 14:10:08 sunspot named[5263]: dumping master file: /var/named/chroot/var/named/slaves/tmp-sTsIWElBLR: open: file not found and these Aug 5 14:10:08 sunspot named[5263]: transfer of 'jemsites.com/IN' from 64.135.16.10#53: failed while receiving responses: file not found I think this must be a permissions issue. Turning off a notebook's screen

My notebook is an HP Compaq nc4010 running current Centos 5.0 with the Gnome desktop. I have been having problems with my notebook's screen never really going off. I lock my screen and the backlight stays on. I push the close monitor button, or even close the unit, the backlight turns off for maybe 10 seconds then turns back on. Actually I just did a test again, and when I push the notebook closed button (that little microswitch that gets toggled when the unit is closed), the monitor turns off completely, then the backlight comes on, then the screen goes into some sort of barely lit mode (brighter). Even the attack VGA monitor does the same thing. But at least I can turn that off independently when I want to lock my system. Oh, I did not have this problem in Centos 4.x. I think this is tied into the screensaver function. I have selected 'Blank screen' theme in Preferences > Screensaver. thanks for any pointers.

Power burn test

I need a program that will just run everything at max so I can measure the max power used on some systems. My 'Kill a Watt' meter should show up early next week. SO run that CPU at max, using all memory, and keeping the harddrive spinning. I can jsut do pings on the lan card for it to stay awake. I have searched here and on the net and have come back with nothing.

Hello Once Again: Another learning experience question - it is my understanding that CentOS essentially IS RedHat but with any commercial connection removed. That being said, is there any difference in the included, or quality of packages between the two distros? I've got some basic issues with a critical server I'm about to set up, and if I cannot get beyond said issues, I may opt to try CentOS. Seeing that CentOS is free (can't call RedHat for support), I'm wondering if I should try and make the case for CentOS over RedHat. Once the choice is made, it may be next to impossible to revert to the other version (RH vs CentOS). Thanks for your insights. Scott

Hello, I can write to an ntfs partion if mounting it by hand with 'mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdf5 /mnt/xp'. But if I use the mount option from the kde Storage Media panel applet (kdebase-3.5.4-13.6.el5.centos) then the partion will be mounted without write support. So how to say kde and CentOS to use ntfs-3g and not ntfs? Maybe by changing some links? Thank you very much. regards Olaf

Latest Pidgin update problem

A while back I added the pidgin repo to my yum configuration and installed pidgin. it has automatically updated itself a time or two since without trouble. but now that Pidgin 2.1.0 is out, it won't update properly. Yum finds a couple of libpurple packages to update as well as pidgin-devel, but not the pidgin package itself: --> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Data corruption on external hard disk

Hi, I'm using CentOS 5 on all my computers here (work + home) and I'm very satisfied with it. Some time ago I purchased a 300 GB external hard drive to store films, music, pictures and documents. Since there's no Windows machine around here (small South French village, town hall and public library use Linux :o)), I replaced the FAT filesystem on the disk by an ext2 filesystem. Now it's already almost full with data. A few days ago I had a problem with the subdirectory Cinema/ containing a collection of my favourite movies. I wanted to copy them from the disk to my newly purchased laptop (ASUS W6F, already running CentOS 5), when suddenly I got a read error on data. I checked in a Terminal what was going on, and the file ownerships were all curiously set, like missing read flags, no more --x rights on directories, whereas I remember I had set them right in the first place. So I started a series of recursive chmod's on the directory Cinema/... but I got nothing: the command prompt never went back. Unmounting the disk was not responsive neither, so I just shut it off. When I was performing this, it was a very hot day, almost 40°C. The disk was really very hot, so I wonder if this might have damaged it. I could retrieve some of the data on the disk (music, pictures, documents), but now, instead of the Cinema/ directory, I have one big file that looks like this: [kikinovak@buzz:/media/disk/Films] $ ls -l total 692996 -rw-r----- 1 678756852 34537972 148381783526817280 avr 28 01:01 Cinema drwxr-xr-x 3 kikinovak kikinovak 4096 mai 9 10:07 Anime drwxrwxrwx 4 kikinovak kikinovak 4096 mai 10 12:25 Series Notice that the file size is something like petabytes :oD Is there any way to repair this obviously corrupt data? Hi all, I've a new CentOS 5 minimalist install; this will be the name server from my prior thread. I have configured eth0 during setup with the static IP the unit will have when in production. During this setup phase, selinux is set to permissive. Setting up on a different network, I did this: dhclient eth0 and successfully got a private address; I also validated that the resolv.conf file was created by the dhclient-script and it was, accurately pointing to my gateway and listing a domain name server by IP. That's where the fun stops. Even pinging an IP, so as not to rely on name resolution, I get the dreaded 'Network is unreachable' error. Any pointers would be more than appreciated. HotPlug, eSATA, and /media

Ok, got a quickie. I have an eSATA drive, a 750GB Seagate in an eSATA external enclosure, and a Silicon Image sil3132 ExpressCard controller for my laptop. The disk and controller work great in CentOS 5 (or F7, for that matter), if I specifically mount it. This is not how I want to have to use this drive, however. I want to hotplug it; that is, plug the controller into the laptop, and then plug the drive into the controller, and have it come up just like a USB drive would. It does not currently do that. Anyone here know how to make an eSATA (or a hotplug SATA mobile slide, for that matter) show up in /media, and have all the nice hotplug capabilities USB drives have? That is, KDE brings up the dialog asking what to do with the drive, it can be automounted, etc. Then when going to hot-unplug, I'd use the 'safely remove' context menu entry (just like a USB drive) and it would unmount the drive and unload anything it might need to unload. Anybody have this working? Hello, I'm running centos5. I'm wanting this machine only, none of my other ones, to participate in p2p file sharing, bittorrent, edonkey, maybe other networks. Does anyone have a howto or step by step guide for this? I've installed bittorrent and mldonkey clients, but neither is working, i'm assuming gateway firewall issue, but i've enabled the correct ports, 6881 through 6999 redirecting to the centos box. I've not made any additions to the centos5 firewall. I've got some audio available on bittorrent network i'd like to get, and a .torrent file for it and on edonkey there's an iso any help appreciated. Thanks. Dave.

Can't print PDFs or PSs in CentOS 5.0

For some reason, when I try to print any graphic PDF (or a PS file made from said graphic), it kills my Minolta 1100 laser printer, and I have to cancel the job, disable the printer and turn the printer off and on as many times as it takes to clear its buffer of the trash. I'm running CentOS 5.0 and have tried Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 for Linux; I have also tried printing the pdf to a file and running it straight through lpr, using the GIMP (although I've NEVER been able to print graphics from there), and even the Image Viewer (which chokes and dies silently while trying to load the file). Any suggestions? I'm using the standard CUPS print system for all of this.... Thanks. mhr

I'm part of a university research group doing CFD (computational fluid dynamics). We're incrementally updating our computing power and have been looking at Intel quad-cores and the P35 or G33 chipset. We're particularly interested in motherboards with DDR2-1066 support. As we're in a production environment, we're more interested in reliability than squeezing out that last fraction of a percent of performance (I'm aware of the inherent contradiction in stating this as we're extending a bit on to the leading edge with this hardware selection). We've patched and rolled custom kernels in the past, but would just as soon not again. Hence, I'd be grateful if you're willing to share your specific experiences with CentOS and P35 or G33 motherboards. I'll compile the responses I get and post them in a consolidated message. Secondarily, I'd like to connect with anyone else doing similar work and/or in similar environments. Currently, we're running a 22-node, diskless (I believe the favored buzzword is now "stateless") cluster of mostly Athlon XP 2500 processors. It's on Centos 3 with Warewulf 2.1.12. I'm having speed problems with the SCSI card we're using to do tape backup. It seems to be functioning in 16 bit mode and the current thinking is that perhaps it's using a legacy driver instead of the correct one. The Adaptec site has a 'driver' for RHEL5 which I've downloaded and tried to install but it seems to have a problem installing on a CentOS-5 system. Anybody implemented a working proxy ARP with CentOS 5? I am trying to implement DNAT on a dual-homed firewall (servers behind firewall are on private IPs) and that requires proxy ARP. Is there a command that says DONT use the ifcfg-eth0 setting(s) that basically have a static address and start the network in DHCP. I dont want to disturb the static settings in ifcfg-eth0 or re-enter them once my DHCP setting is done... I just want to temporarily run with DHCP (I'm on different network than the static setup). Yes I can copy files and then recopy files and all that - but is there a command that just says startup the network in DHCP and dont change anything in the files. Jerry

I get the same error as this person: http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=9349 Like the poster, I get the error with tomcat 6.0.13 on x86_64, kernel 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen and both jre 1.6.0_01 and 1.6.0_02 When I revert to jre 5u12 on the same kernel, I don't get the problem. If I stay with jre 6, but use kernel 2.6.18-8.el5, I also don't get the error. So it's not clear to me whether this is a java problem or a kernel problem. Any hints? For now, I can use jre 5u12, but I could file a bug if I could figure out which one is actually causing the error. johnn

Howdy list, I can't seem to find any doc's explaining what's really going on behind this scenario: A user home directory had been reset to : d--- --- --- user group user_dir As root i tried to : chmod -R 750 user_dir got permission denied, my friend tried with as user that owns the directory to: chmod -R 750 user_dir and voila it works. My question is how come did it work, since the user_dir doesn't have a owner permission attached and why user root has been denied with changing the mode? Rgds, Joseph

Dear All I have jus migrated to centos 5 and jus wondering why n where this problem could be server A which is running for the past 2 years used as my primary dns and mail server redhat linux 8 sendmail ver-8.12.5-7 bind ver -9.2.1-9 since the server is old and is prone to all security problems i have a new machine which i have installed the following and will replace my existing redhat dns + mail server centOS 5 bind-9.3.3-8.el5 sendmail-8.13.8-2.el5 mailscanner latest spam assassin + clamav - latest dkim filter plus the lastest updates now when i send a mail to my yahoo account from my old redhat server it goes fine to inbox I disconect my old red hat server cable and plug it new centos server since both have the same IP's and when i send a mail from the centos server it goes to yahoo bulk mail and not to inbox receving is fine with both server i am jus wondering why. even i see the DKIM filter inserts a global key ( text record of my DNS ) in my mail logs and also in the yahoo when i see full headers in yahoo apprecite if someone could help me thnks and regards simon -- Network Administrator -- Network Administrator

Full server restore-point image

Hi, After some months of configuring and testing a small server, think that would be nice to make a full server restore-point image in order to recover it if something goes wrong in the future, just restoring the image back and not making the full install and configure process all over again. The server uses Logical Volumes. I was thinking on using the CentOS LiveCD and then use dd command to clone all partitions to another storage device. But I have no experience on this. how to export and import VMware servers

I recently build a CentOS-based VMware server (the free ver) and now need to move all of the virtual machines off my old Windows-based VMware server (also the free ver) to this next CentOS-based one. I have successfully FTP'd all of the files to the new CentOS box and have even opened the server in the console Window, but cannot "start" it. I start the machine (like I always do), and nothing happens. Unfortunately, I cannot simply run "import", as I'm using a Windows-based workstation to use the Windows-program to console into the CentOS-based VMware server. I suspect that perhaps some config file or something still thinks that the machine is still running in the previous Windows host OS? Now, both my guest OS and host OS are both CentOS 4.5. Before, the host OS was Windows 2003, and my host OS is CentOS 4.5. Any ideas of where to look would be greatly appreciated. (I understand that this might not be the best place to ask such a non CentOS-related question.)

We may be moving from Dell to HP and i get on really well with OMSA and Nagios etc so ideally would like to monitor using similar tools rather than some central 'enterprise' dashboard etc. Any real world experience? thanks

Hi, We have a 256 kbits/s (kilobits per second) link to the internet. it is a router running Linux that belongs to our ISP. They have given us 8 internet ips. (i.e- subnet is 255.255.255.248). one has been given to this router. I have given another internet ip to the firewall running CentOS 4.5. iptables is running on it. And also, I have installed iproute2 pkg as well. pls see below for installed pkgs. [root@firebox ~]# rpm -qa |grep iptables iptables-1.2.11-3.1.RHEL4 [root@firebox ~]# rpm -qa |grep iproute iproute-2.6.9-3.EL4.3.centos4 This firewall has 3 ethernet cards at the moment. one is connected to router. one is connected to our DMZ zone. one is connected to LAN1. These are ips of the firewall. eth0 (internet) - 1.2.3.4/255.255.255.248 (pls assume it. For security reason, I will not give you the actual ip) eth1 (DMZ Zone) - 192.168.100.254/255.255.255.0 eth2 (LAN1) - 192.168.101.254/255.255.255.0 Now, everyone in LAN1 has access to internet. (due to SNAT rule) Now, I want to install another ethernet card to this firewall. then, it would be eth3. eth3 will be as follows. eth3 (LAN2) - 192.168.102.254/255.255.255.0 Now, I want put about 5 people (5 PCs) behind this LAN2 and give internet access to them. But, I do not want them to use my whole bandwidth (i.e - 256 kbit/s), But Instead, I want peple behind this LAN2 to allocate 64 kbits/s(kilo bits per second) for their internert access. Is it possible to acheive this task on firewall running iptables and iproute2 (CentOS 4.5) ? If so, How can I do such thing? If I do such thing, what will happen to the people behind LAN1 ? In the documentation, it says that add/remove software is use only to install from CD drive[1]. However this program refuse to run when no internet connection, why not just prompt for the installation media? assuming everybody has fast internet connection was too optimistic. 1. So what is the correct way to install/remove software after the installation (using GUI)? 2. In /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Media.repo the sample command was incorect, it should be --enablerepo=c5-media. virtual hdd problems when CentOS is guest OS

I recently installed VMware on CentOS 4.4 (using the single server CD). I installed VMware fine, and then installed the VMware-mui tools that allow me to use a Windows box to console to the server. From my Windows box, I can create VMs on the fly just fine. Interestingly, I can create virtual Debian boxes ok, but I can't create virtual CentOS boxes. What might I be missing? As soon as I boot to the iso, it says something about not being able to find the drive. (I didn't have this problem with CentOS when Windows was my host OS, only when CentOS is the host OS)

VMWare hiccup on CentOS 5, 2.6.18-8.1.8

For reasons which escape me, my VMWare Server, which was working perfectly a week ago when I shut down my machine for vacation, no loner comes up with the formerly working Windows XP system - it just stays in the small window where it normally boots and does nothing. The vmware serverd log shows nothing particularly interesting, and I have reconfigured the vmware twice to try and fix this (which interestingly enough could not find the vmware modules for my os either time). I am running CentOS 5.0 with all the latest updates through this morning, plus a 2.6.18-8.1.8 kernel with NTFS file system support compiled in as a module, and vmware server shows this: $ vmware -v /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2) VMware Server 1.0.3 build-44356 (Not sure what that note about libpng12 means....) Dear All I have jus migrated to centos 5 and jus wondering why n where this problem could be server A which is running for the past 2 years used as my primary dns and mail server redhat linux 8 sendmail ver-8.12.5-7 bind ver -9.2.1-9 since the server is old and is prone to all security problems i have a new machine which i have installed the following and will replace my existing redhat dns + mail server centOS 5 bind-9.3.3-8.el5 sendmail-8.13.8-2.el5 mailscanner latest spam assassin + clamav - latest dkim filter plus the lastest updates now when i send a mail to my yahoo account from my old redhat server it goes fine to inbox I disconect my old red hat server cable and plug it new centos server since both have the same IP's and when i send a mail from the centos server it goes to yahoo bulk mail and not to inbox receving is fine with both server i am jus wondering why. even i see the DKIM filter inserts a global key ( text record of my DNS ) in my mail logs and also in the yahoo when i see full headers in yahoo apprecite if someone could help me -- Network Administrator

Hi All, Is there a way to check the harddisk health before CentOS installation.? One way I used to do was by using --badblocks check in ks.cfg file while using RH 7.2. This is not working (atleast not with the same syntax as in RH 7.2) in CentOS. Is there an alternate (correct) syntax or is there a new (better) way to check harddisk health before CentOS installation? Please help me and it is very urgent requirement for me --Regards S.Balaji

Hi All, I am running CentOS5 . Yum pkg was installed by deault fresh installation. pls see below for installed yum pkgs. [root@mailgw ~]# rpm -qa |grep yum yum-updatesd-3.0.5-1.el5.centos.2 yum-3.0.5-1.el5.centos.2 later, I installed below pkg for protection. yum-protectbase-1.0.4-2.el5.centos Now, everything works. But, in this vershion of yum, It has no crontab running. It has a file called /etc/yum/yum-updatesd.conf instaed. in this yum-updatesd.conf file, by default, below 3 lines were set to no # automatically install updates do_update = no # automatically download updates do_download = no # automatically download deps of updates do_download_deps = no I changed it to yes. Pls see below for my yum-updatesd.conf file. Lost file associations, too - urgent

I just returned from a week's vacation and brought my CentOS 5.0 system back up, updated it, and somehow it has lost all the .doc file associations. These used to be associated with the OpenOffice writer, but that's now gone. ACtually, all the "open with" associations are gone (rtf's now think they should be opened by the text editor!). I'm not sure exactly what the association should be - can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks. mhr

Linux File System w/case-insensitivity

I used to mount some files via Samba which resided on a windows machine on a CentOS box. We moved the files to a NetApp filer, and I was unable to mount those files using either Samba or CIFS. Most of my problems with Samba were related to the (Windows?) password encryption scheme that has not been included in the Samba suite. Even if I use the mount t cifs, it didn't work. So on the NetApp filer, we switched the volume to NFS only (having the volume as both NFS and CIFS also didn't work, strangely enough), and I was able to mount the volume. Fine. But now the complaint is that the files are case sensitive, and doing searches for a particular file is problematical. So the question: Is there a file system that linux can access that's case insensitive? I guess making a LUN off the NetApp filer and formatting NTFS would work. But I thought I'd ask if there's other alternatives. Also, I think that it would have to be writable. I haven't checked, but isn't NTFS mountable read-only by linux? === Al

Scripting a directory change on CentOS

This is probably a FAQ item but despite searching extensively with google I am unable to find an answerer to this question. Perhaps I am using the wrong words. In any case, at the risk of inducing some mirth at my ignorance, how can one script a cd command so that that the user remains in that directory when the script exits? I have to work with a long path to a project working directory and I would like to have a simple script called "current" which would produce the same effect as issuing this from the shell: cd ./very/long/path/to/obscurely/titled/project/directory I cannot seem to find anything that directly addresses this, other than to point out that shell scripts run in their own copy of the shell interpreter and so anything done to the PWD therein is local to the duration of the script. I could create a logical link from my home directory I suppose, but I desire a scripted solution. I really do not wish to program a utility to do this and I cannot believe that many people have not already addressed this desire with a straight forward answer. So if any of you have a simple to implement solution then could you share your answer with me? centos5/xen does not see all memory

I have a server with 6 gigs of memory. CentOS5/Xen sees only half of it. Could someone advice me how to get it recognize all my memory? I have installed 32bit CentOS5 and I'm running kernel-xen-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5. This kernel should have PAE support: $ grep PAE /boot/config-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen CONFIG_X86_PAE=y But xentop reports only 3 gigs of memory: Mem: 3145148k total, 2400512k used, 744636k free CPUs: 2 @ 2612MHz If I boot with kernel-PAE-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5 the system recognizes all memory but I cannot use Xen. My motherboard is Supermicro H8SMA-2 A64/Opteron with MD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ processor and 2 x 1GB ECC DDR-II SDRAM and 2x 2GB ECC DDR-II SDRAM. Regards, Peter

Any SELinux gurus around?

Hey all, I'm having some trouble getting PHP5 w/ CentOS 5 to connect to a remote MySQL server using the standard mysql_connect() call. Yes, MySQL libraries are installed along with php-mysql... The only way I can get it to work is to run setenforce Permissive, otherwise the connection fails. The annoying thing is that nothing at all shows up in my /var/log/messages file describing why SELinux is stopping this connection. If I run my script with the CLI php binary, it connects to the remote server fine, just not when executed via httpd. I tried running the following on my PHP script: chcon -u system_u -t httpd_sys_content_t test.php But still I cannot complete a connection until I put SELinux back in Permissive mode. Any tips? Why isn't SELinux sending a message to the logs (it does for other SElinux issues just fine)? TIA, Ray

I have even found I have two version of package installed: glibc-2.3.4-2.36-i686 glibc-2.3.4-2.36-x86_64 What's the reason in duplicity and why not all packages are x86_64. Thanks in advance, David

Our repeater has an echolink connection, thus if I present the software available for it, it might perk up people's interests more. It would also be very helpful if the echlink applications offered proxy/firewall options so people at companies or at home that have networks that implement firewalls, can proxy out and still get on Echolink. Hello, Have install of centos 4.5 on Xeon 64 bit. Want to copy install DVD to harddrive and later use this to update the OS. However I dont know how to ask the install program to look on the harddrive rather than DVD CD. TIA Tony

Hi, Here is a newbie to Yum on Centos 5. I got an interesting yet misterious problem here. When I rolled a mod_jk package and tried to install it onto a bunch of Centos 5 boxes with comand 'yum -e 10 -d 10 install mod_jk', it fails with the messages at end; and so mod_jk just ended up ignored. But when I manually run 'rpm -ivh --test mod_jk...rpm' on command line it reports no problem. Please help. ----------------------------------------------------- ... C5 RPM for RequestTracker now available

Hello, I took a stab at packaging RequestTracker for CentOS 5. Basically some needed FC6 packages were rebuilt as el5. The results are here: http://www.tlviewer.org/rt3/ I'm an rt3 newbie. I'm in the process of reading the DOCS and setting up the DB. The install via RPM appears to be sound. So far the login page for RT opens successfully. Perl-related problem on rrdtool?

On CentOS 4.5, I have Cacti and Nagios installed. I'm trying to "glue" them together with a program called n2rdd but am having a problem that I wondering is Perl-related. When I run "tail /var/log/nagios/rra/n2rrd.log", I see lots of this sort of thing: server01: Missing template for "server01" service "check_ping" "/etc/n2rrd/templates/rra/ping.t" I have a ping.t template in that file path, but it's still not working. In fact, I did one exactly like the example in the instructions (step 7, example 1: http://n2rrd.diglinks.com/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/wiki/InstallationGuide) and then I copied that icmp.t template to ping.t While I don't expect a CentOS list to help me with a non-CentOS, perhaps someone can tell me if this is a "Perl on CentOS" issue. I'm relatively new to installs requiring Perl and assumed I was ready to go Perl-wise on this version of CentOS Thanks.

ASAP, I will upgrade from 4.4. After that, I will let you know how 5.0 sees the available RAM, in the same box. The first place you need to look, is in the BIOS, to see how the box sees the RAM. If it doesn't see the RAM as available, CentOS won't either.

Hard disk recomendation for a software raid 5 array. Does Linux Software Raid support/interacts well with TLER enabled disks.

Hi people, I am building a cheap remote rsync backup server using a software raid 5 array of 4 500GB disks. What I have available on the market is: 1. HITACHI GST Deskstar T7K500 500GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Serial ATA II-300 2. SEAGATE Barracuda 7200.10 with NCQ 500GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Serial ATA II-300 3. Western Digital 500GB SATAII RAID EDITION Caviar SE16 7200rpm 8.9ms 16MB cache I am tempted to use the Western Digital Raid Edition as it has 5 years of warranty. However I found out that the "Raid Edition" means that the disk supports TLER - time limited error recovery: http://www.excelmeridiandata.com/products/wd_raid_edition_drive.shtml A more profound description can be found here http://www.wdc.com/en/library/sata/2579-001098.pdf. In summary, the error recovery time of the hard disk is reduced to 8 second. If the hard disk cannot perform the recovery it will report an error to the RAID controller and delegate the recovery to the controller. As I intend to use linux software raid on Centos 5, I will not have a RAID controller to deal with this delegated error, but two cheap I/O SATA controllers. Has anybody used 'raid edition' disks with software raid? Does anybody know how linux software raid interacts/supports these TLER disks. Best regards Alex

I downloaded it from below URL. http://my14all.sourceforge.net/14all-1.1.txt and copies it as 14all.cgi @ /var/www/cg-bin I made a few changes to the script. But When this server comes up , after rebooting, the traffic of the First graph (i.e Daily' graph (5 Minute Average) goes up, both incoming and outgoing traffic go up to 50-60 Mbits per secrond. This happened, Whenever the system comes up after a reboot. Any idea to solve this issue? Unless it reboots, It works fine. Also, I want to know, Where is this mtrg date stored?
