CentOS3.9 Users: After applying all Updates to Upgrade from CentOS 3.8 CentOS 3.9 I find up2date no longer works "correctly" (or shall I say NOT as before)... Missing is the "sources" File!!! Higher memory requirements for 64 bit?

I have a dual Xeon 3.2GHz XDMCP server serving out about 50 Gnome desktops to thin clients. I currently am running 32 bit with 4GB of memory. Performance is fine, normally, and the machine runs with about 3GB in swap. However, if a user app suddenly sucks up the maximum allowed rss and virtual or 256MB/process as specified by ulimit, the resulting swap drags the machine down to the point that people think it is locked up. I have another 4GB of memory on order. But I suspect that part of the problem may be running out of memory in zone-normal, which I know will cause swap storms. (An oops in the log file suggests that is where memory was tight.) I had low memory protection set to 150MB, and have increased that to 256MB. (I had to increase it to at least 135MB previously, else dd if=/dev/zero of=/tempfile.tmp would start a swap storm that would bring the machine to its knees.) More users will be added to this machine, and I am worried about having an ever higher percentage of this (16GB maximum) machine in zone high. So I am considering moving it from 32 bit CentOS4 to 64 bit CentOS5 or 64 bit Fedora 7. But a cursory test of the 32 and 64 bit versions of firefox suggest to me that, just opening them up and going to google.com, the 64 bit version uses about 50% more memory than the 32 bit version. Could someone please comment on how much of an additional memory hit I might expect? The VM risks and benefits that I might be taking? Really, *any* commentary about this scenario would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve Bergman

Hi, Running Centos 5 (32bit)... running a server with 4gb of RAM and it's shows up as: [root@ubercore1 ~]# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3369544 2549668 819876 0 29008 2382360 -/+ buffers/cache: 138300 3231244 Swap: 6291448 0 6291448 I know 4gb is the limit for a 32bit OS but i thought it would be able to use all of it? Is there another kernel i was supposed to install? --N

Hello, I would like to deploy centos on hundreds of client PC (a new setup). Presently, several distros has attract me due to their focus on the desktop, however they only have few months lifetime before a new version released. Is it advisable using centos on client? what about support for new hardware and several office productivity software like openoffice, did centos always update to the latest version? Previously i was using RH9 on several hundreds clients and love it, however the update was horrible since it is unsupported, hence I can not install it on the new hardware (ie. sata) thanks. --beast

Thanks Johnny, I dont think there is Internet access on the boxes I have to deal with. What I am trying to get to grips with is the problems described here: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/eserver/library/es-rhel-coexist/ Although actually the hardware is different and I will be using centos 4.0 I guess I need Legacy, Compatibility ARCH Development Support 8 Legacy Software Development 5 Compatibility ARCH Development Support 191 But I dont know which rpms are in these 3 groups, I will only have remote text based access and if I had a list of these rpms I could do a rpm -q to see if they were installed. (maybe these are in a packing list or xml file somewhere?) Also I recall doing some similar application install on 32 bit hardware with Centos 4.0 which meant I had to install some (32 bit) compat libs cos the app was expecting to run on Centos 3.0. So now I might need to install, with ssh/scp, rpms for 32 bit compatability and also 4.0/3.0 compatability. Most of these shared files are in /usr/share/doc or /etc .. though, maybe also /usr/include and others. The way shared files work is that the shared file MUST have the same md5sum on both $ARCHs (i386 and x86_64) ... which for doc files that are generated via texinfo or other things is quite hard to accomplish. You can minimize shared file problems by installing all i386 duplicate packages with this option: rpm -Uvh --excludedocs <package> This is quite a PITA because you loose the ability to use yum for installs or updates. You could also use the "tsflags=excludedocs" in your /etc/yum.conf file ... but then you get no documentation from any i386 OR x86_64 packages that you install. Either way ... running 32bit packages on x86_64 machines is a royal PITA, and I would recommend that you use a 32bit OS where you know you will need 32bit packages if at all possible. httpd failed with a new install of 5.0

Everyone, I have been working on a new installation of CentOS 5.0 on a x86_64 machine. The installation has gone well except for httpd. When I start httpd with LogLevel turned to debug all I get is an immediate failure with the following errors the logs: /var/log/httpd/error_log: [Sun Jul 22 13:00:31 2007] [notice] suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper: /usr/sbin/suexec) /var/log/ssl_error.log: [Sun Jul 22 13:04:32 2007] [warn] RSA server certificate is a CA certificate (BasicConstraints: CA == TRUE !?) [Sun Jul 22 13:04:32 2007] [warn] RSA server certificate CommonName (CN) `localhost.localdomain' does NOT match server name!? [Sun Jul 22 13:04:32 2007] [error] Unable to configure RSA server private key [Sun Jul 22 13:04:32 2007] [error] SSL Library Error: 185073780 error:0B080074:x509 certificate routines:X509_check_private_key:key values mismatch The ssl errors were present on the old system so I was not too worried about those. I turned off selinux with out a change in symptoms. I get the same errors whether I start the service via "service httpd start" or "httpd". When I use "httpd -E /tmp/errors.txt" the errors.txt file is created, but is empty. "httpd -t" responds with "Syntax OK" I have done a yum remove of the web server module, and have done a re-install using yum without a change in symptoms. I have not been able to figure out how to get more data in the logs; httpd seems to be failing too soon to record much. Anyone's ideas would sure be appreciated !!! Greg Ennis

I need to read up on selinux and get to where I understand it much better. Yum does this automatically for kernel, kernel-smp, kernel-bigmem, kernel-enterprise, kernel-debug, and kernel-unsupported. Wait...I had the files backwards. I thought it was something that I might have done previously, but apparently it's a new default setting in the yum package. In that case, I'll just use the new one. Sorry for the confusion. -- Bowie

I was able to install the kdeedu RPM, from the Fedora Core 3 Install DVD, without any problem, on my CentOS 4.4 box and KStars is up and running and has been updated. :-) The bad news is that I didn't learn anything, by doing it this quick and simple way, so now I'm going to begin reading about creating my own RPMs. When I get the CentOS 5.0 install DVD, that will be another issue for getting KStars installed. Thanks to those who responded! KStars is a very powerful and a very elegant program, for anyone interested in Astronomy. Lanny

Greetings, I would like to install Postfix 2.3 or 2.4 (I need support for SASL authentication via Dovecot) on a Centos 4.4 server. I have already found rpm packages at http://postfix.wl0.org/en/available-packages/ and pages about using the centosplus repo for postfix. Before launching rpm or yum, however, I'd like to ask the list which way you think is the best way to do this. By "best" I mean the way which: * has no known issues, gotchas, extra configuration tricks... * has as little extra dependencies as possible * can be maintained/upgraded with yum Thank you in advance for any feedback! I just updated to the most recent version of yum. I noticed that my yum.conf file had changed. The old one has: installonlypkgs=kernel kernel-smp kernel-devel kernel-smp-devel kernel-largesmp kernel-largesmp-devel kernel-hugemem kernel-hugemem-devel The new one does not have this option listed. I don't remember if that was a default setting or if I added it in. Do I need that line to be there? I noticed that without it, yum will perform an update on kernel-hugemem-devel and kernel-smp-devel. Is this a problem? Thanks, -- Bowie

Sound setup on ASUS laptop (Intel High Definition soundcard)

Hi, I just got a brand-new ASUS laptop, a W6F light laptop. So far I managed to get everything to work (wireless, X, ...). The only thing that stubbornly refuses to work is the sound. Here's the sound card: # lspci | grep -i audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) I googled quite a bit for this. Some folks suggested to put an addition options line in /etc/modprobe.conf. Here are some of the suggestions: options snd-hda-intel model=asus ... or: options snd-hda-intel model=asus-laptop ... or: options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=asus I tried all these (and duly rebooted after each attempt), but to no avail. Usually, to test the sound, I open a terminal and try to play one of the test sounds in /usr/share/sounds/alsa with the command-line 'aplay'. Anyone got that sound card to work? Any suggestions? drive to standby after idle timeout?

I'd like to to put the hard drives in standby mode during periods of no activity. I'm just running a file server plus a couple small things on a Qube 3 from home, although the web stuff will increase it's still minimal. On my NetBSD systems I can use atactl to do this via: mount -u -o async,noatime,nodevmtime / mount -u -o async,noatime /usr atactl wd0 setidle 5 [wait a time] # atactl wd0 checkpower Current power status: Standby mode I looked at smartctl but it doesn't look like I can set idle time with it, just readout status and perform self-tests. Vmware on Centos 5

I'm sure there are people running server 1.0.3 on centos 5, what I'd like to know is, if you are using it then; are you using a 64bit centos 5 host ? are you using core-2 duo cpu ? and if so, are you suffering from any guest clock/time issues ? I've read the vmware timekeeping pdf and tried all of their 'workarounds' and none seem to work. I'm suffering these issues on a ubuntu box running 7.0.4 but I'm looking for an excuse to migrate to centos 5 for this particular server. Is FUSE enabled in centos5 ?

Hello, I noticed FUSE is not there by default disabled on centos 5. Is there a separate RPM that includes FUSE module for the same kernel as of centos 5 ?. I have installed the latest centos 5 update, don't see FUSE enabled . [root@xx]# pwd /lib/modules/2.6.18-8.1.8.el5/source [root@xx]# grep FUSE .config # CONFIG_FUSE_FS is not set [root@xx]# I checked both addons and centosplus, it doesn't seem to be their also. Any comments where I can find the FUSE module already built for centos 5 kernels (FYI, I really don't want to build a FUSE module by myself, which is what I am doing right now !) ?. DVD Drive Recommendations

Alle, Our customer is looking for a drive with the following specs that works (but is not necessarily supported by the vendor, that would be gravy) on CentOS4/5: DVD hyper multidrive, capable of reading and writing DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R for DL, and DVD+R DL. The HP DVD940e (USB 2.0, but that is *not* a requirement, http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/desktop/dvd_writers/1/storefronts/RX901A…) was suggested but we are not familiar with it at all. Major problem with software raid

Ok, this is the case: I've got two raid-5 arrays with software raid, both with three disks. Setup: md0 has hdb2, hdd1 and sda1 md1 has hdb5, hdd3 and sda3 Tonight, the system lost power due to a power spike. The result was a reboot where it attempted to fix the raid, but it didn't exactly work. I have now booted a live CD and using utilities there. It seems the checksum value is slightly off for all disks. And the update time is the same for some disks, but not all. When I try mdadm --assemble /dev/md1 (or md0) with various options like force, scan, auto, etc - I get error messages like only 1 drive found, not enough.. no disks found and no mention of md0/1 found in config file. What should I do? Which partitions (two in each array) do I pick as "these two are the one I should rebuild with"? And how do I actually FORCE mdadm to start an array with those two set devices? source rpms for fedora

Hello, I'm running centos5. There's some rpms that exist on fedora that are not in centos5 in it's repos. I was wondering if it was possible to set up yum to get only selected packages in source rpm form ou of a fedora repo and install them on centos? In that way they could be recompiled for centos5. CentOS 5 Live USB

I took a stab at making a bootable CentOS 5 Live USB pendrive and I ended up with a kernel panic. I was able to do this with a live CD of CentOS 4, but it seems the same procedure does not work for the new version. Has anyone been able to accomplish this? Any and all thoughts are apprecicated! CentOS based router dropping connections

Hello, I am trying to figure out a problem I'm having using CentOS on a machine as a router. The short story is: any traffic routed through the router seems to get disconnected at random occasionally. The hardware setup is: I have two switches, the router sits between them, the webserver on the LAN switch. The machine I'm using for the router is a Dell 860 1U rackmount with two NICs, one NIC on the internet, one NIC on the LAN. The routing setup is: I'm using IPTABLES for routing, with the following command: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -m tcp -i eth1 --dport 6680 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.10:80 Basically, I'm forwarding port 6680 on to the webserver (.10) on the LAN. What I have tested so far: If I'm at the router, I can download files from the webserver just fine, so the webserver setup and physical connection is OK. If I'm at the router, I can download files from the internet just fine, so the physical connection to the outside is OK as well. If I'm on the outside of the router (on the internet) I can download files directly from the router just fine. The issue is when I try to download a file from the webserver via the router (port 6680). It will work sometimes, but other times it will randomly disconnect me, at random points during the download. Watching the traffic on a packet-sniffer shows that right before the download fails, my client computer trying to download the file keeps resending "ACK" messages, the router keeps sending the next sequence of packets, and eventually the router sends a bunch of "RST" packets. There aren't any strange messages in /var/log/messages or dmesg in either the router or the webserver I need some help diagnosing this problem. Here's some info about the router: CentOS 5 latest kernel 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5 iptables v1.3.5 I've tried testing as much as I can before asking for help, but I'm at the end of what I know to try. Any leads as to where to look to diagnose, or what might cause this would help. Thanks in advance, -Jesse

Problems printing multi-page emails to SMB printer HP1120C

I have a SMB printer on my network (HP1120C connected to a Windows XP machine). CUPS test page printed OK (CUPS v1.1.x) so printer appears to be installed and set up correctly for printing from my CentOS 5 machine. Problem is when I try to print multi-page emails, I get an unspecified error after printing the first page and it won't print any more pages - in fact it just keeps printing the first page and also rubbish! The print log on my CentOS machine says the printing is completed but on the Windows machine it says there is an error. I never had this problem when I was using RedHat9 - any suggestions would be much appreciated. Andy

Hi, I am still runnig Redhat 9 box with sendmail and squid. It is quite slow. It has only 128 MB RAM. So I upgraded it to 512 MB RAM. Now, It is running with 512 MB RAM. But, It is still slow. No progress has been achived. Some users say it is slower than before. Actually, I also have noticed it is NOW SLOWER than before. WHY IS THAT? NFS filesystem recommendations please (and problems with XFS)

Hello all, I am implementing a new mail server into our environment consisting of three machines - two Dell Opterons that will act as load balanced Postfix servers, and a 1.5TB RAID10 NFS server. All three machines are running CentOS 4.5. Since the NFS is going to be used for only mail, I was kicking around the idea to use XFS. I have CentOS installed on an ext3 partition, and with the leftover space on the NFS I created an XFS partition. I tried to implement XFS into the kernel, and was coming across some issues. Even after installing xfprogs and xfsprogs-devel, and issuing the command: yum --enable-plusrepos install kernel I booted up the kernel and still could not mount my XFS share. I keep getting this error: mount: fs type xfs not supported by kernel After googling around (and not finding out how to get XFS enabled in the kernel), people had some concerns about using XFS due to issues and it being about as fast as ext3. Also people said that I might run into issues with XFS if I run NFS+lvm+xfs+md but I'm not sure if I run lvm and md and if that applies to me. I found this benchmarking blog someone wrote that compares the speeds in Ubuntu with all the filesystems in a Postfix server environment (although it's not NFS): http://piao-tech.blogspot.com/2007/04/file-system-benchmarks-for-postfix-ma… With all this said, I'd like to use XFS, if it indeed is going to be the fastest for the solution I want to implement. If you guys can help me get that installed by telling me what I need - great! If you think XFS isn't going to work as efficiently and fast as I want it to, and there is another filesystem (such as ext3) that will be more stable and just as fast in my setup, I'm all ears. Yum missing dependency

I haven't run any updates on my systems recently, but now I'm trying to get them up to date again. When I run a yum update, I get this error: Error: Missing Dependency: initscripts >= 7.93.26.EL-1 is needed by package httpd I did a Google search, but I didn't find anything relating directly to CentOS or RHEL and there was no fix suggested. If it makes a difference, I am running the update against a newly created mrepo repository. Any suggestions? -- Bowie

Security checklist for new Centos server?

Greetings, everybody I've browsed around a bit, but there seems to be no single practical list of this kind. What would you do to make a new Centos server which must run apache, IMAP (Dovecot) and SMTP (PostFix) and nothing else for a few domains as secure from attacks as possible, using only standard RPM packages as much as possible? (Please note that choice of other IMAP and SMTP servers is not possible in my case, for a lot of reasons really not pertinent on the list, so let's not go there, please) Here's a first absolutely uncomplete draft off the top of my head: - remove as many unnecessary packages as possible (best way to find them?) - install dovecot (not included in centos, IIRC) and other extra packages you do need - run yum update - enable long passwords - set up only ssh2 on a non standard port - set up Single Packet Authorization? - set up itables (what would the safest iptables script to do all and only the services listed above? - what else? Feel free to rearrange, cut, add, give links, whatever: personally, I'm interested in securing the whole box, meaning how to glue things together in the safest possible way, without forgetting anything, while things like how to make Postfix not an open relay, for example, are already covered in detail in the Postfix docs. Is there a way to send stdin information to a script that is using the dialog command? I tried echo -e "\n\n\n" | scriptname and this had no effect. I tried scriptname << EOF EOF and that had no effect. I am looking for a method that calling dialog within a script will obey stdin. Anyone have an idea. Jerry

possible corrupt rpm database

Hello, I've got a centos5 box that at least has a dependency issue or a corrupt rpm database. I am open to suggestions as to how to proceed. I have added some extra repositories to my yum configuration, centosplus, rpmforge, atrpms, and the kbs repos. I haven't been having issues with installs or upgrades until today when i ran a yum update, and got a missing dependency error for zaptel, a perl dependency. I've tried doing a yum install for the package, but no success. The error is below and i am open to suggestions. Thanks. Can we get a newer version of madwifi on rpmforge?

RPMforge still has: rpmForge: madwifi-0.9.2.1-2.el5.rf.i386.rpm ATrpms has: madwifi-0.9.4-38_r2512.fc6.i386.rpm but requires their patched kernel. I am at IETF this week, and was at IEEE 802 last week. There are over 60 visible access points in most locations (actually not that may APs, but an SSID for b/g, another for a, another for 802.1x TKIP, another for 802.1x CCMP, argh!) and I think there are some serious table handling problems. It would be nice to be current with code...

I have seen this behavior with the tg3 module and a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5701 Gigabit Ethernet NIC. This is a 64 bit PCI card in a Tyan Tiger MPX (dual Athlon) motherboard. I Googled for any similar problems and couldn't find anything so I put a spare 3c2000t into a 32-bit slot and chalked the problem up to the old motherboard and chip set. The box in question is *NOT* serving as a router but does have multiple NICs. The NIC in question has a CAT 6 cable to a 3com 16 port unmanaged gigabit switch. I swapped cables, etc. and still saw the same behavior. I could restart the network and everything would be fine for a while but then it would just stop with no errors, messages, etc. Since I had the spare 3c2000t, that problem went down in the priority stack. hi all, is there a way inside a shell script to send key presses to a program that does not support silent command line arguments??? Example: alsaconf pops up with a screen with info and has OK, so the user must hit OK, then a screen appears to select the driver, the default is good so again another "OK", then another prompt about modifying /etc/modprobe.conf and again I want to accept the default of "YES". Is there a wrapper that can be put around alsaconf for redirect stdin with something so basically three returns are given to alsaconf???? Thanks, jerry

CentOS 5: rsyncd log problem

I run a CentOS/Fedora mirror with rsync access. I have the following rsyncd.conf file: read only = true transfer logging = true pid file = /var/run/rsyncd.pid log file = /var/log/rsyncd.log dont compress = * [Fedora] path = /var/ftp/pub/mirrors/fedora comment = Fedora mirror [CentOS] path = /var/ftp/pub/mirrors/centos comment = CentOS mirror My problem is that nothing gets logged into /var/log/rsyncd.log, all logging occurs into /var/log/messages instead. There's no error message that /var/log/rsyncd.log (the file doesn't exist) can't be opened. What have I done wrong? GFS/LVM/RAID1 recovery question

I have a (CentOS4.5) cluster in which the servers mount a GFS partition which is an LVM2 logical volume created as a mirror of two iSCSI- connected drives (with a third for the log). The LV was created using a command along the lines of: lvcreate -m 1 ... /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd where sd[bc] are the mirrored (iSCSI) PVs in the VG and sdd is the log. I have this working and can write data to the filesystem on one machine in the cluster and see it appear elsewhere etc. What I now want to do is to test what happens when I disable one of the mirrors and then restore it with clean disks. However, my google-foo is weak today and I can't find any information on how to get LVM to tag the broken half of the mirror as failed and then how to get it to resynchronise the mirrors once the disks are replaced. Can anyone explain how to do this? Is it even possible? James

if I have a local centos yum mirror, whats the best way of adjusting the yum.repos.d/*.repo files to use this? If I simply edit CentOS-Base.repo there stands a chance that a yum update could conflict with my changes. am I better off creating a 'new' .repo and setting the stock one to 'enable=0' ?

Is anyone using luci successfully to create clusters with shared storage support? If the "enable shared storage option is selected, the cluster is not created and luci just gives errors about not being able to install the necessary software. I need to provide a 3-4 node gfs cluster. I have ..and others posted bugs about this on the forums / bug system without any solutions. Some of the reports go back a few months without even a reply from development. Is there a way to log what is trying to be downloaded on the nodes, perhaps i could just manually install it but there is not logs on what luci is trying to do. Thanks in advance.

Help with CentOS 5.0 domU install

Hi, I am trying to install a centos 5.0 domU via virt-manager (or alternatively as described in the centos howtos). Anaconda boots up fine, asks for the language, then for the installation medium. Here my problems begin. I am trying to install via nfs, so I enter my IP details and nfs server details, but after confirming the nfs details, anaconda barely tries to contact the nfs server and instead spits out following error message right away: Error: That directory can not be mounted from the server. I have exported a centos DVD via nfs. The DVD is good, the export also. Also my entire setup seems ok, because if I export a Fedora 7 DVD instead of the centos DVD, I can access the nfs share and install Fedora 7 without problems. ONLY WITH CENTOS I have this problem. It must be something with the centos installation kernel/image/anaconda installer imho. I have not found any reports describing this behaviour. Am I the first who has had this problem? How could I go about debugging what anaconda is doing / why it fails? I am completely out of ideas of what could be the cause of this problem and how I could get rid of it. Any hints? Hello, First of all thanks to the poster on the wiki for centosplus. I've configed it added include and exclude lines, do i need the centos-priority plugin? I want to enable centosplus to use the centosplus kernel and the centosplus webstack. Below are my base, updates, and centosplus repo definitions. Hello, does CentOs 5 supports an Adaptec AHA-2940W/2940UW scsi controller (pci)? Is this controller maybe supported by the aic7xxx driver? I want to install CentOS 5 on my desktop pc but the currently installed pci scsi controller for my scanners (drivers: 2x tmscsim, 1x advansys) are not supported by CentOS. difference between kernels

Hello, I'm running centos5. I enabled the centosplus repo and i now have two kernels both 2.6.18-8.1.8-el5 but one has a .centosplus on the end of it. I was wondering the differences between these two kernels? Thanks. Dave.

If I am on a CentOS box (or any other nix box, I guess), what is the easiest way to easily see the dhcp server? (Like in MS Windows, one can run "ipconfig /all" and see which IP is the DHCP server)

IHC7 RAID-1 or Kernel Software RAID-1?

I'm just setting up a SuperMicro system which has twin SATA disks on an Intel IHC7 RAID-capable controller. The system came with Fedora 5 pre-installed, which I will be removing and replacing with CentOS 4.5. But before doing so, I've been having a look at how the original vendor configured it. When I've built systems previously, I've disabled any RAID controller and used kernel software RAID-1, set up per-partition, and this has worked well. This system is currently set up with hardware RAID enabled, which is detected by the kernel device mapper. I can see what it has found using "dmraid" with -b, -r and -s. A single physical volume was created on the mapped RAID-1 device, and then logical volumes created on that. My question is: which kind of configuration will generally give me better performance? To use the IHC7 RAID-1 as currently set up, or to use Linux software RAID-1 as I am used to doing? Any other reasons to choose one over the other? Thanks in advance for any insights. quick question on machine name

I have a box I just installed centos 4.5 on. The name of the machine in /etc/hosts is TomSlick.xyz.com TomSlick (for example). the name of the machine in /etc/sysconfig/network HOSTNAME=TomSlick.xyz.com Note both are upper case: Yet when I login as root the prompt is showing me tomslick in lower case not a combo upper lower. I have grepped /etc and below for tomslick and cannot find why this machine name is not a combo of upper and lower case. I have never ran into this before. Where is this??? THanks, Jerry
