Found quilty :D It's my ens1370 card, what does not work with flash-sound. When switched into motherboard integrated card, sound worked perfecto'. So turning now via card as default, everything's ok. I can still use ens based with skype... Jarmo

yum through a squid proxy

Hello, I've got a centos5 box that is now behind a what was transparent squid proxy. The proxy now has it's own dedicated ip and uses proxy basic authentication. I've got a firewall that redirects all outgoing port 80 traffic to that ip so anyone wishing access goes proxied. The problem is yum on my centos5 can't retrieve the .xml files for the various yum repositories. In the squid access.log on the router i'm seeing invalid request method. This means that the box isn't yet talking proxy and is still trying to go through direct. To my yum.conf file i added lines similar to these: # The proxy server - proxy server:port number proxy=http://mycache.mydomain.com:3128 # The account details for yum connections proxy_username=yum-user proxy_password=qwerty I tried port 80 on that proxy line with the same results. Telneting to that ip/port works fine, iptables isn't blocking it. On the firewall i added the yum-user to the password file and used squid's ncsa_auth program to confirm the username/password combination, output was a simple "ok". On the centos5 box i did a service network restart, which didn't work, yum update gave me the same error. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks. Dave.

Multiple WAN link -- CentOS Suitability

My situation: I have a cable modem (COMCAST 6Mbit d/l) and am about to also have DSL (Verizon 3 Mbit d/l). I was thinking of using CentOS (4.4, 4.5, or 5??) as a router/dhcp server/firewall for my home network consisting of 3 to 6 computers at any given time. I seek the wisdom of the members of this list on the following issues: -- Is CENTOS a good direction to go? I do not mind manually configuring things or installing lots of packages, and am doing this as both a learning experience for myself and proof of concept for a customer. -- Is it possible/hard/easy/trivial to share the load between the two connections? Have either link fail and things still work correctly? -- I plan to build a box for this job - looking for general recommendations of how much horsepower (mem/disk space, etc) is required -- What are the implications of two pipes for incoming connections such as DynDNS based remote desktop or VNC, or web server, FTP, etc The basic hardware layout I see is 3 nics, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB disk space. 1 NIC for each WAN port, 1 NIC for my local net, some recent CPU. I have been browsing through the "Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO," but am still not on top of how to get done what I'm looking for. I understand that there are probably products that I could buy to do this, but my preference is to do it myself. Sorry if my questions are too basic. Please feel free to tell me off if so. Has anyone successfully gotten vlc to install on centos 4.X? I saw other posts on using rpms from places but I dont want to go there. I have downloaded from videolan ftp site the following: mpeg2dec libmad libfaad ffmpeg vlc I have configured and installed each package above. When I run vlc (to connect to a linksys wvc200 camera that outputs MP4 video) I get the message main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `MP4S'. So I am assuming I dont have something correct yet with vlc. Just wondering if someone else has built vlc and would mind sharing how they did it. Jerry

Looking for a WebDav sync client

I am looking for a webdav tool much like wget. And it has to maintain timestamps (Cadaver does not, or at least I have not figured out how). There is a whole big WebDav server now of all (almost all) of IEEE 802.11 presentations (not the draft docs) and webdav is the access method....

Managing recompiled packages?

Hi, I'm using Centos 5.0 on my desktop, and I'm very happy with it. One question bothers me. I rebuilt a handful of apps, for example K3B to enable MP3 audio, or libshout and mpd, to enable streaming audio. Now what happens if these get updated? I guess the new version will squash my personal version. Is there a way to prevent these packages from being updated? Or how should I handle these? Cheers, Niki Kovacs

Recommended REPO Setup for Desktop on Cos5

CentOS is simply great. I use it as my main desktop. I use VMWare clients for any "special needs" software. I am struggling a bit with the plethora of repos and looking for some advice. Would you opine with detail on the best repo setup for a desktop CentOS 5? Comments: rpmforge provides fine rpms. kbsingh, google, adobe, kde-redhat, CentOS-Testing , CentOS-fastrack, epel, ATRPMs also provide fine RPMs. epel seems to have some stuff that I have not found on the others (like gnucash), but enabling epel worries me about conflicts with rpmforge et al. I recalling hearing about priorities and protectbase yum plugins. My thinking is someone has mastered these issues and I could copy their setup so I could do a "yum search whatever" a "yum provides whatever", "yum update", etc without having to enable/disable repos or includepkgs/exclude packages in the repo (i.e., "just work"). I realize one size won't fit all, but your recommendations/thoughts are appreciated. -- Sincerely, John Thomas

Has anyone worked with either the Hitachi or Seagate Compact flash drives in an IDE to CF interface and set the up with EXT3 formatted partitions for use with LVM? I ASSuME that LVM is not for FAT32 formatted drives.

CentOS5:Printer Won't Work

I have a HP OfficeJet K80xi "all-in-one" USB printer. When I send a file to the printer from a virtual console using the command : lp "anyfilename", the response is "request ID is HPOJK80-7 (1 file(s)". There is no printer action, no sound, nothing. The printers name is HPOJK80; the -7 is the job number. The command lpstat shows there are a total of 7 jobs in the queue. The command lpq response is "HPOJK80 is ready and printing", and lists the 7 file names. Nothing has ever printed since I switched to CentOS5. The hplip web site (http://hplip.sourceforge.net/) tells me to do "rpm -qa hplip" from a virtual console. The result is "hplip-1.6.7-4.1.e15" (driver model installed). The web site table shows any driver later than 0.9.5 should work. The hplip web site also states that there are 6 "dependencies": xsane, cups-devel, libjpeg-devel, pyqt, pyqt-devel, and net-snmp-devel. Using the find command (find / -name 'filename' -print) results in 2 hits for xane, 0 hits for the others except libjpeg-devel which gives the message "/proc/11268: No such file or directory". My conclusion is there are 5 missing files, probably cups-devel is the most important. Where can I find the missing files? How do I know where to put them? While I am not sure that "system-config-printer" was run correctly, I am going to concentrate on the missing dependencies. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bob T.

Checking badblocks using KS

Hi All, Is there a way to check the harddisk health before CentOS installation.? One way I used to do was by using --badblocks check in ks.cfg file while using RH 7.2. This is not working (atleast not with the same syntax as in RH 7.2) in CentOS. Is there an alternate (correct) syntax or is there a new (better) way to check harddisk health before CentOS installation? --Regards S.Balaji

apache mod_authnz_ldap: multiple servers syntaxes

Hello, I'm trying this here first before moving to the apache list. Maybe someone of you use mod_authnz_ldap with multiple ldap servers declaration for redundancy. With one server declared it is working. Here is what I've tried for adding another one (space separated as read in the apache's doc) : .... AuthLDAPURL ldaps://ldap1.example.com/ou=People,dc=example,dc=com?uid??(businessCategor… ldaps://ldap2.example.com/ou=People,dc=example,dc=com?uid??(businessCategor… .... Result: Syntax error on line 43 of /etc/httpd/conf.d/trac.conf: Invalid LDAP connection mode setting: must be one of NONE, SSL, or TLS/STARTTLS Second test with quotes (as seen with some googling): .... Havp Version 0.86 RPM ?

Hi, I want to use Havp Version 0.86 with SQUID on CENTOS 4.4 and 5. But, no Havp 0.86 RPM still can not be found. I want to build Havp 0.86 RPM and SRPM by using the tarball. So, I got havp.spec file written for Havp 0.82 and changed its version to Version: 0.86 . Then, I did below command. [root@worldnet SPECS]# rpmbuild -ta havp.spec error: Name field must be present in package: (main package) error: Version field must be present in package: (main package) error: Release field must be present in package: (main package) error: Summary field must be present in package: (main package) error: Group field must be present in package: (main package) error: License field must be present in package: (main package) then, It gave the above error. then, I tried below command. [root@worldnet SPECS]# rpmbuild -ba havp.spec error: File /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/havp- init.patch: No such file or directory then, It gave the above error. What are these errors. Flash-plugin ?

Hi Have anyone got Adobe's flash-plugin 9.x.x.x working under centos 5? I can get video working ok, but no sound. Using alsa, and can play with other players all other sound formats, but flash's sound. Have tested plugin with FF 1.5, latest opera and konqueror, dead :( Anyone could give me some "twisted ironsting" model, how to get it working. After couple of hours googling, no help, but similar problems loud a much. Jarmo

I downloaded CentOS 5 dvd iso and burn it to a DVD-R, then booting it from my computer, but the following appear: Can't find kernal image: linux boot: I read the RHEL installation guide but it says for CD installation the installation program will start by itself, but why this happen for DVD? Hi, I need to install Flash Media Server on a Centos box. When running the installation script, I get a.... [root@... FMS_2_0_3_r68_linux]# ./installFMS ./fmsini: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory ERROR: Your are running the Macromedia Flash Media Server installer on the wrong platform. Please advise. Anyone have any experience installing FMS on Centos? Is there a RPM package? Should I just go into the script and remove the platform checking routine? Thanks.

RAID hard drive serial numbers?

smartctl, hdparm, and sdparm all are valuable tools to obtain hard drive info. But, they don't seem to work, at least, on obtaining hard drive info from drives on a Dell PERC controller. Instead, I'm given basic PERC controller info, not drive info. Is there a tool to let me get the hard drive make/model/serial numbers from a hardware RAID setup? Thanks. Scott

NIS problems after installation

so, i just installed CentOS on our server and set up NIS using the same configuration as on our other server, but the clients' ypbind services complain that although they can find the correct server, the server does not respond to requests. to debug this, i've: * pinged the server using its ip and it's name * ssh'ed to the server using it's ip and name * ftp'd to the server using its ip and name * used dig to get the server's address from itself (dig @stretch stretch.washcslab.org * checked to see that nfs and ypserv are running * checked to see if stretch could bind to it's own nis server and all of these were successful. so, I also: * run ypserv (on the server) and ypbind (on the server) both in debug mode and gotten no errors * run ypserv (on the server) and ypbind (on the CLIENT) both in debug mode and gotten no errors any help with this really gnarly bug would be greatly appreciated! steve -- Steve Strong Math and Computer Science Washington High School 2205 Forest Dr. SE Cedar Rapids, IA 52403 http://crwash.org mailto:strong@crwash.org

Firestarter on Centos 5

I am looking into different firewall tools. Well, I am looking to turn my Centos notebook into a NAT box, so that I can plug my corp notebook into its ethernet, and get access through my Centos notebook's wireless connection. (yes the corp notebook has wireless, but they frown on us using it!) I have started with Shorewall via webmin. I suspect that since my main firewall is Astaro, I will figure out Shorewall. But in an earlier post to this list, there was a reference to Firestarter (http://www.fs-security.com/) Thing is there is no Redhat/Centos 5.0 rpm, only 4.x. Anyone out there know if it will work?

conga / luci not working in centos 5

I am trying to create a cluster in cent5 but keep running in bugs. First I ran into this bug: "A problem occurred when installing packages: failed to locate/execute module" http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1931 and followed the following suggestions in the above thread: mv /etc/redhat-release /etc/redhat-release.orig echo "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (Tikanga)" > /etc/redhat-release This seemed to work but now I am experiencing another issue. Current Issue: I cannot create a cluster when the "Enable shared storage support" is checked. Conga appears to be trying to create the cluster as you get the "creating cluster message" then just bombs with the following error. "A problem occurred when installing packages: Failed to install packages" If I don't check the "enable shared storage support" the cluster is created and brought online. I need to get a cluster online with shared storage for gfs but these bugs are stopping me, could someone shed some insight on this. Thanks in advance!

Gnome Bluetooth Manager

I installed: gnome-bluetooth.i386 0.7.0-10.2.el5 from the base repo It also installed (at least): gnome-bluetooth-libs.i386 0.7.0-10.2.el5 These show up in /var/log/yum.log interestingly they do not show up in /var/log/rpmpkgs My bluetooth mouse is now working. It was not before. But I do not see any bluetooth management stuff in gnome (http://live.gnome.org/BluetoothManager) What gives? Did I forget a step? Wireless newtworking in CentOS 5

Installed CentOS 5 on my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, hoping that it will be easier to set up wireless networking than it was in CentOS 4.4. But still sooooo difficult to get it working, mainly because there doesn't appear to be a driver pre-installed for this wireless card ((Dell wireless 1390 Mini PCI network card 802.11b/g). Do I still have to use ipw2200 and what is this anyway? - I really don't understand why it is so difficult to get wireless networking in CentOS 5 when it works like a dream in Windows XP (I have a dual boot system, but I'd much rather use linux!). I've tried modprobe ipw2200 and all the rest of it with no success - what am I doing wrong please? Thanks, Andy

Gnome Terminal and xterm problems

I've noticed this in CentOS 4 & 5 and Fedora 5 & 6. If I'm in Gnome desktop and using any of the terminal programs and I ssh into any server, the connection just hangs. Not drops, it just hangs and doesn't recover. These servers are all over the country on different ISPs in Tier1 datacenters. Some are in our office, so they are on the local lan. We have a mix of RHEL 3, 4 & 5 and CentOS 4 & 5 on the servers. If I'm using a windows computer with putty or SecureCRT this never happens, it only happens when I'm using any of our linux desktops or laptops. It doesn't matter if I'm in the office or at home (on comcast) or over at a friend's house (verizon dsl). This problem has been going on for at least two years and I'm finally fed up to the point where I might switch back to windows since 99% of my job is working while ssh'ed into servers. Anyone had similar problems? -matt

Rebuild Fedora Core 6 cmake rpm on CentOS 5

Hi, I'm trying to build cmake on CentOS 5 from a Fedora Core 6 source rpm (I need it for another package I'm trying to build from a source rpm, xmlrpc-c). When I start the build, I get this error: error: Failed build dependencies: xmlrpc-c-devel is needed by cmake-2.4.6-3.el5.i386 Well, that's nuts. I can't build xmlrpm-c without cmake, but cmake won't build without xmlrpc-c-devel! I'm probably just going to try installing the Fedora Core 6 rpms on CentOS 5 to avoid this problem. But, how would one go about resolving a build problem like this? upgrade my open ssl

Dear All, I have centos 4.5 final and when i installed it there is a openssl version openssl-0.9.7a-43.16 .. i need to upgrade it to openssl 0.9.8 .. also when i try to uninstall it it gives me a failed dependency errror actually i did a nodeps and uninstalled openssl ver 0.9.8 but when my sendmail was restatered compalined saying libssl.so.4 missing or error actually i found that thaere was libssl.so.6 in /lib directory. if i say yum update openssl or yum install openssl it searches the repositories and says nothin to do. How can i upgrade my openssl... apprecite if u can guide me thnks and regards simon

help compiling a package camserv

I download camserv and did the usual ./configure and make make gives me an error: gcc -g -O2 -o camserv camconfig.o camserv.o filter.o main_loop.o picture_loop.o shm.o video.o -Wl,--export-dynamic ../libltdl/.libs/libltdlc.al -ldl ../common/libcommon.a -lnsl -ljpeg -lm /usr/bin/ld: errno: TLS definition in /lib64/libc.so.6 section .tbss mismatches non-TLS reference in camserv.o /lib64/libc.so.6: could not read symbols: Bad value collect2: ld returned 1 exit status What could that be from? Sybase 12.5.3 on CentOS 5

Folks, After installing CentOS 5, I installed a few Sybase dependencies such as compat-libstdc++-296 and libXp. Once Sybase was installed, I started the steps to create the Adaptative Server. When the wizard executes the dataserber binary it crashes with segmentation fault. Someone can give me some help on this? Does anyone have this working? xen network io load

Hello I have Xen related issues. I try to describe it as best as I can. While transmitting large amounts of data from domU the IO load increases greatly, thus making the domU unusable. The load is significant even on dom0. The performance of cpus and hard drives is not an issue. We have this problem on all servers with diferent hw configurations. disabling SELinux on CentOS: a good idea?

I was banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why my Nagios install wasn't working on CentOS 4.5 (I'm used to Debian), and so I disabled SELinux and everything magically started working. Is this a good long term idea? Or is there a better way of doing things?

Centos on a Flash drive and Micro drive

I am considering putting together a 'micro server' that I can easily travel with. I am seriously considering the decTOP, as at $99 (plus the cost of a 256MB SIMM) is amazingly priced. But I want to run on batteries, so trash a real hard drive. I have a couple of IDE to Compact flash adapters that support 2 flash cards. So I was considering a 4Gb (or even 2Gb) cheap real fash card for the OS and a 4 or 8 Gb micro drive (I have a 4Gb sitting in a drawer gathering dust got to figure out how to fix its paritions that I messed up). So I was thinking to put the more static parts of the OS on the flash card and the not static parts on the micro drive. Obviously the Swap partition, /home, and /var/log go onto the micro drive. What else? /tmp? Are /dev and /proc real things on disk or only pointers to the various devices? And then how do I put all these directory trees on the micro drive. I currently use a LVM partition for my /home on my notebook, but this is a lot more. Do I do Symbolic links? Or what. Are there any howtos? I have not found anything to help me so far. Probably got at least a week to figure this out. Obviously I don't have the system right now. And monday it is off to San Fran for the IEEE 802 meeting... (and the following week IETF in Chicago, family gets really upset when I have these 'back-to-back' conferences).

Postfix Question

I've googled around and although I get a lot of hits about postfix smarthost authentication with ssl, I can not find out how to actually accomplish the task. I've read through smatterings of postings from Neophasis and the like searching for just the syntax and what file (I assume it's main.cf) I should be using; however, any smtpd_ lines I have tried result in postfix hanging and refusing to deliver mail. I could simply cease using smarthost, but my ip address is dynamic (yes I know stop yelling at me I'm poor right now) so mail bounces to some domains if I don't use smarthost. The server I'm running postfix on is CentOS 4 (fully updated). Postfix version is 2.2.10-1.1.el4 (from rpm -qa). I have not had sufficient downtime to upgrade to CentOS 5. Should I do that? Tired of temp induced shutdowns

My notebook has a habit of getting hot, and Centos just shuts down. Centos on the decTOP?

Replace the hard drive with a Flash card, and run off a battery pack? Add Bluetooth (lower power draw that 802.11) and run IP over it to your desktop.... It does have ethernet, so a crossover cable works too. Would be nice if I could know if I can pull that GX500 and put in a slightly faster cpu....

I've got this little program I wrote to test something, and it keeps giving the wrong result. I'm not inexperienced in C, but I can't believe strtof (et al) are broken, so I must be doing something wrong. However, I've spent hours looking at this and comparing it to the man pages and don't see what I'm doing wrong. strtod() and strtold() also give equally wrong results. (the example program given on the strotd man page works fine, BTW.) PHP doesn't connect to PG with SELinux

I just migrated my FC4 server to CentOS 5 and had some problems with DB connections from PHP to a PG server (remote server). The thing is that I couldn't get an error, until I disabled SELinux. At that time, the PG connections started working. I am frustrated. This is a dual boot box, Win XP (Spanish) and CentOS 4.4. The phone company man came today and installed ADSL to the WinXP side and that works fine. I can't get the box online, while in CentOS 4.4. The ADSL router has a fixed IP address (192.168.1.1) and he configured it to get the IP from the ISP via DHCP and get the DNS servers automatically. When I try that on CentOS (which is what I use 99% of the time), it doesn't connect. In the Network Configuration for eth0, things seem OK, but the configuration for xDSL, ppp0, probably needs something I do not have in it and it won't activate. Questions: (a) should I have network configurations for both eth0 and ppp0? I've tried it with both and only with ppp0. (b) is there a possibility that the NIC, which is integrated onto the motherboard and has always worked fine on our home LAN, as eth0, won't work properly as ppp0? If so, should I disable it and install a NIC in the box? I've looked in the RHEL Step by Step Guide for RHEL 4 and Systems Administrators Guides, but they don't seem to cover this issue. Any links to a step by step how to, to do something I believe is simple, but, where I'm missing something, will be greatly appreciated! TIA, Lanny

Centos 5 Live CD

I just tried the Centos 5 Live CD on my Thinkpad T41. It works pretty good but did not recognize my Laptop's modem or WiFi (I guess no surprise there). I do have a CardBus modem that is not a Win-modem that I could try when I get home. I did not see anyway to configure a PPP dialup call. Is there a way to run kppp or Gnome's equivalent?

Dear All, i have installed Centos 4.5 and is working perfectly fine me actually a novice and is my first time with centos though have experince with redhat i do have a few queries.. 1) i dont see /usr/src/redhat/BUILD and the other 4 directories.. namely RPMS, SOURCES, SPECS, SRPMS so basically how do i install /src.rpm files i have installed sendmail ver 13 with mailscanner n spammassassin n is working fine.. but like to know a few things its absoulutly new domain n mails sent to hotmail and yahoo go to junk mail folder.. i guess implemnting DKIM for sendmail will help .. but wa snot gettin enogh details on how to implement this... appreciate if someone can hrlp me and detail me some steps or give me so possible links tht gonna be of help thnks and apprecite Regards simon

scim-panel-gtk segfault

Hello, Running kernel 2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.centos.plus on centos5, on shutdown sometimes I get: Starting killall: Sending all processes the TERM signal...scim-panel-gtk ...scim-panel-gtk[4065]- segfault at... error 4. (sometimes there is one segfault error and sometimes 7+] Also, [and this may be unrelated] I occasionally can't boot into X and need to: #rm /tmp/.X0-lock Then I can startx. I have noticed sometimes that I get the segfault, but the next time I boot, I can boot into X. I really don't know enough to guess whether sometimes it is finishing X and removing the lock before the segfault and sometimes it is not. I am not so unhappy with the situation but being unknowledable of course worry about what effects a segfault during shutdown may have. I do notice that after the segfaults, it goes on to unmount the filesystems and other things that it does normally (but I can't say everything normally as I don't really understand the normal steps of it shutting down). I'd like to: 1) figure out how to stop the segfault especially since sometimes the scim panel won't appear after a reboot (and requires another reboot to appear again). 2) see if the scim segfault is causing the trouble with X starting and if not, figure out why the lock is not being removed. If you have suggestions as to what to look into, I am happy to hear them. The only thing I have tried is googling scim-panel-gtk segfault and found scim-lib 0.99.6 is available (13 Aug 2004) Fixed a bug which causes segfault on x86_64 platform. But that must be a different bug as: rpm -qa | grep scim-lib scim-libs-1.4.4-39.el5.x86_64 I saw an RPM someplace for scim-debug but wouldn't really know how to go about trying to debug it. Shawn P.S. Note, I do not believe this is in anyway connected to being a centos plus kernel as on a stock kernel had the trouble.

question on mplayer playing dvd amd 64 on centos 5

Gents, I can compile mplayer on centos 4.5 AMD 64 in native 64 bit mode and it plays the dvd, and also compile for 32 bit mode "gcc -m32" on it also plays the dvd. "mplayer dvd://1". I can compile mplayer on centos 5 AMD 64 in native 64 bit mode and it plays the dvd. However, when I compile in 32 bit on AMD 64 centos 5 I cannot play the dvd. I get: Playing dvd://1 File not found: '1' Failed to open dvd://1 My configure string is: ./configure --disable-ivtv --enable-largefiles --target=athlon_xp --cc="gcc -m32" --as="as -32" --with-extralibdir=/usr/lib; make; make install I need the 32 bit mode as it will then play wmv's. Has anyone done a 32bit compile on centos 5 AMD 64? Can you play dvd's? If so can you share how you accomplished this. I am thinking this more a centos 5 issue than an mplayer issue. Centos 5 yum update needs gpg key import

I just performed a fresh install of 64-bit Centos 5 on a system, booted fine, then performed a yum update, or at least tried to. Files downloaded, and were about to install, when it complained that the gpg keys could not be found. I ran into this about a month ago and found a web page showing the path locally to where the keys live, and providing rpm --import /to/the/path. But of course now I cannot find that page. Could someone kindly remind me the path to the keys, or simply the one-liner rpm to import the keys? Thanks. Scott

Hi I can't find a place where I can download a centos4.x livecd iso I only found a centos5 image on the web. Can anyone give me an url? I'd like to clone centos4 machines, using the livecd. I used a systemrescue live cd image to create the filesystem structure with evms, and copy all files, but have problems with installing grub, because the version is not the same. I imagine it would be better to use a centos4 livecd to install the grub MBR. If anyone has a suggestion, it would be nice. Thanks

Hi, I am trying to set up a CentOS 4 machine with various iSCSI mounts for Oracle, but devices keep on moving around, causing the mounts to fail while called by the sd[a-f] names. We thought about using labels, but, as some of the partitions do not use EXT3, that was discarded, so we thought about using udev and by-id. The problem is that udev does not seem to create the by-id folder or any files within it, while the by-path all get created. The rules file, 51-by-id.rules contains details for the both of them, but the by-id do not get detected, at least the logs don't indicate so. 2.6.22.1 on CentOS 4.5, No tty0?

Hi! I compiled 2.6.22.1 kernel on my CentOS 4.5 box, during boot up, rc.sysinit complains cannot find /dev/tty0 to get keymap (line 294), and I cannot login to the box via ssh, the passwd authentication do pass, but no console opened, ssh just hangs, and "ps ax" on the CentOS box shows "sshd@notty". RPM Build Question

Hi People, I have just started building my own RPMS on both Fedora and CentOS and generally things have gone well. Currently I am trying to create RPMS for some commercial software that we have purchased. Step 1 was install the software using its JAVA Based installer ensuring that all files were installed into a particular directory in /usr/local. Anyone have any idea how to stop the prelink change that is causing the problem ? I assume its a directive similiar to %define __os_install_post %{nil} but I'm unsure exactly what I should be turning off. Thanks Clint

Root fs suddenly goes r/o

Out of the blue, dmesg on my HP Proliant w/ a SCSI disk gives loads of messages like this one: EXT3-fs error (device dm-0) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted Then the root fs goes read-only, so little else can be done on the machine. LVM locks up. At restart, fs needs a reboot to recover after fsck. The host starts up ok, then I am given some more minutes before the problem reappears. This is stock CentOS 4.4, never have gotten to update it because of this very same problem. System logs say SCSI I/O error, but SMART says no problem has been found, neither does badblocks (run from a rescue CD bootup). SCSI cabling, terminator, etc has been checked. SMP motherboard not recognized

I'm having trouble with IBM xseries 345/dual Xeon 2.66GHz showing only one processor. At boot I see "SMP motherboard not recognized". Using title CentOS (2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen) root (hd0,0) kernel /xen.gz-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5 module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet module /initrd-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen.img have tried acpi=no (causes boot-hang), acpi=ht (boot hang), noapic (no effect), and noht (no effect) Booting to gentoo-minimal CDrom shows expected 4 cores (dual HT) with cat /proc/cpuinfo, only 1 using 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen Any ideas? many thanks

latest Asterisk on CentOS 5 64 bit ?

I will install CentOS 5 x86_64 on my home server. Among other things, that machine will run Asterisk with an analog card connected to my analog phone line, sort of a home-brewed PBX with VoIP capabilities. The latest Asterisk version as of now is 1.4.7.1 I am trying to find RPM packages for CentOS 5 but so far no luck. The best site so far is this: http://djflux.net/rpms/fedora/6/ It's Fedora 6 so it may recompile on CentOS 5. Anyone else using recent Asterisk versions on CentOS 5 64 bit? Loss of Prompt & Cursor

When I log into a virtual console as ordinary user, I initially have a prompt & cursor. After I print 24 lines or more, the last visible (24th) line will be data instead of the prompt & cursor. The up arrow no longer gives the previous commands. A clear command will restore the prompt & cursor. This bug first appeared after I installed CentOS5. I do not believe it is a CentOS5 bug however because when I boot Ubuntu from a LivePC CDROM, the same thing happens. Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance - Bob T.

I "think" I followed the directions on kernel compile (actually I downloaded 2.6.21.5). did the make oldconfig, did make menuconfig, did my compile and everything is working fine in that regard. My question now is how do I take that kernel configuration and use it for another machine that also needs the 2.6.21.5 kernel. Basically I am trying to save the step of going back into menuconfig and reselecting what I wanted. Thanks, Jerry

Firefox and CPU spikes?

Is it just me, or does anyone else experience their CPU utilization spiking to 100% for about 5 to 10 seconds when Firefox is about to download a file, via http or ftp? Then, after the file starts to download, the CPU usage drops back down to normal. I've got Firefox 2.0.0.4 running on CentOS 4.4 32-bit. Thanks. Scott

Steve French (samba team) made available a newer cifs version (1.48) backported to old kernels: http://lists.samba.org/archive/linux-cifs-client/2007-April/001898.html Using this cifs code Jeff Layton (RH) has built some test kernels after making appropriate adjustment for RHEL: http://people.redhat.com/jlayton/ You can try the test kernel to see if the problems have been fixed, or if you would rather not use any test kernel, you can just get the cifs module compiled. I have compiled a x86_64 version of cifs for CentOS 5 for my own use and confirmed it has eliminated the bug that causes system crashes in kernel 2.6.18 (C5's default). Akemi

Hello, We have recently purchased two Supermicro servers, AS-1021M-T2RB (http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/system/1U/1021/AS-1021M-T2RV.cfm) and have built them both with CentOS 5 operating system. Simple Question about Resolving Names without suffix with bind

Hi I am trying to use Bind as named. And I have successfully set up a chrooted bind. Anyway, I cannot have it resolve "www" directly. For example, when I am using nslookup, when enter www.example.com, it will resolve. But when enter www, it will not. I want to have www resolve to www.example.com, what should I do? I have already set $ORIGIN in the zone file, but it does not work. Thanks.
