evbug module on centos 5

How can I get the module evbug under centos 5? I was hoping it was there by default but it is not. Can I individually compile it? If so how. I havent done kernel modules before. evbug gives me all keyboard events in syslog. I tries a couple other keyloggers but it only gave me ps/2 keys not USB keys. centos drbd - mounts/ replication

Hi, I would normally post this to the drbd list but it so low traffic/low volume (plus Austria might be asleep right now) I figured i'd ask someone here in case they have gotten drbd working on centos. Right now my system says i'm only the 971st person to even install it... It's been out for years, so likely this just means version 8. But you'll only see a couple of posts a day on there so far. Here's a "HOWTO" for getting things to a point where you can experiment carefully with the mounting procedures, which is where the mystery comes into view for the uninitiated <so don't follow it for production just yet, it's under construction for eventual use by the Wiki if we can answer some questions>: Install Centos 5 during install make a filesystem called /drbd-netblock and give it 1GB and it shows up as /dev/sda7 yum install drbd kmod-drbd edit /etc/grub.conf to allow boot of the drbd kernel 2.6.18-8.1.6.el5 #1 SMP reboot, the proper kernel should now be up. modprobe drbd umount /drbd-netblock filesystem so drbd can use it: umount /drbd-netblock edit /etc/drbd.conf /dev/sda7 is a 1GB filesystem I made during install called /drbd-netblock ############# global { usage-count yes; } common { syncer { rate 10M; } } resource r0 { protocol C; net { cram-hmac-alg sha1; shared-secret "secretphrase"; } on box1.mydomain.com { device /dev/drbd1; disk /dev/sda7; address 192.168.1.2:7789; meta-disk internal; } on box2.mydomain.com { device /dev/drbd1; disk /dev/sda7; address 192.168.1.3:7789; meta-disk internal; } } ############## drbdadm create-md r0 # Is this done on just the primary or both? How does the "device" statement in the .conf file (device /dev/drbd1;) relate to any actual filesystem element? None right, it's just a name you give your netblock correct? Is the "disk" statement (disk /dev/sda7;) referring to my 1GB filesystem space I created, that's what I should put right? When you do the mount, are you doing "mount /dev/drbd1 /drbd-netblock1" or "mount /dev/drbd1 /replicated" ? I figure someone here in the Centos crowd will have an answer(s) so we can create a Wiki HOWTO for this. :-) -krb

missing Nagios dependencies: how to fix on yum?

On CentOS, I am trying to "yum install nagios" (after adding the rpmforge repository), but every time I run it, I get this message, and am not sure quite what to do. Missing libexif update for Centos5

Hi, could it be that the libexif update to 0.6.13-4.0.2 for Centos5 somehow got forgotten? The updates for Centos4 were released nearly two weeks ago. In the meantime also lots of other updates showed up for both Centos4 and Centos5, but still no libexif update for Centos5. Best regards, Bernd.

Vim differences between C4 and C5

I have installed CentOS 4.5 and 5 on 2 separate machines, and both have default installs of vim-enhanced on each of them. I noticed that I can get syntax highlighting as a regular user, sudo and as root in C4.5. In C5 I only get highlighting as a regular user. I diff'ed my /etc/vimrc files between each install there is no changes and neither root ~ has a .vimrc file. I had put "# vim: filetype=apache ts=4 sw=4 et" at the bottom of the apache conf file and it works great except when I 'sudo vim' or use root in c5. I tried :syntax on, as root and it didn't make a difference either. CentOS 5: $ rpm -qa vim* vim-common-7.0.109-3.el5.3 vim-minimal-7.0.109-3.el5.3 vim-enhanced-7.0.109-3.el5.3 CentOS 4: $ rpm -qa vim* vim-minimal-6.3.046-0.40E.7 vim-common-6.3.046-0.40E.7 vim-enhanced-6.3.046-0.40E.7 Is there something I am missing? It was less than obvious that it would be useless. It's only now that I've read the whole complexity of the process to be performed *before* someone could add you to the EditGroup -- it's so unbelievable for a poor civilian that I am that I feel like I am already at Gitmo! Here's what I could read one should do: 1. Complete the Contributor License Agreement, but this has prerequisite steps. 2. In order to do that, you have to create a SSH key. 3. You then have to create a GPG key. 4. You have to create a Fedora account (not a wiki account!). 5. For that, your GPG key should be published to hkp://pgp.mit.edu/. 6. Submit the form to apply for a Fedora account. 7. Request the Contributor License Agreement (CLA). 8. Edit it to agree with it, GPG-sign it, and send it back. 9. Only now you can contact someone from the EditGroup to ask for the right to edit the wiki page that holds the EPEL wishlist! To me, it would be simpler to apply to visit the Pentagon or the CIA! I am disgusted by the way the Fedora people handle all this stuff. Everyone knowing how a Bugzilla works, or even how a mailing list works, can easily find that much simpler ways were available to the public to be able to SUGGEST a few packages for inclusion in EPEL. When GNOME asked the public in August-Sept. 2006 what new game to add to GNOME games, before setting up the Usage Survey, a suggestion list was open. It was easy to add suggestions there, by simply creating a wiki account, no fuss added, no strings attached. Now I know I can't expect for *anything* from EPEL. trapping keystrokes

Hi all, How do you trap key strobes in centos before they are handed off to an application? In X windows I dont care what app is running or which app has focus. I need to know what key is pressed. The key can still go on to the application that is fine. I just need to know what keys are being pressed. I have tried xbindkeys but depending on which app is running I may or may not get my keypress binding, I tried loadkeys but that only works on the console and not X. Any ideas? Thanks, Jerry

Heartbeat for Centos 5- Can't build RPMS or install prebuilt RPMS

I am stuck. This is X86_64 platform. In the extras repos, there is the SRPMS for heartbeat along with the RPMS for it. I have downloaded both. But I can't build the RPMS from the SRPM as it fails compiling something in BUILD/heartbeat-2.0.8/lib/crm/pengine Additionally, I can't install the RPMS: rpm -Uvh heartbeat-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.i386.rpm heartbeat-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.x86_64.rpm heartbeat-pils-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.i386.rpm heartbeat-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.x86_64.rpm heartbeat-stonith-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.i386.rpm heartbeat-stonith-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.x86_64.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libperl.so is needed by heartbeat-2.0.8-3.el5.centos.i386 but perl is installed. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

How to add to EPEL wishlist?

Does anyone know how to submit wishes to the EPEL Wishlist here? http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/WishList It reads "Immutable Page". They say: "Please add packages that are part of Fedora but lack a EPEL maintainer to this list", but there is no way to do that! They don't say if "Packages part of Fedora" means "Core" or it can be Extras too, but packages obviously missing from RHEL (4 and 5) and castrating the KDE desktop include: -- JuK (it was stripped off kdemultimedia); -- Kaffeine; -- gtk-qt-engine; ... As a side note for AmaroK lovers: I am very happy with the simpler JuK on systems where I have it, and it *does* have a future, as it will be present in KDE4 too: http://www.purinchu.net/wp/2007/06/26/juk-love/ But Red Hat _hates_ KDE apps, and it even castrates official KDE packages such as kdemultimedia... CentOS 5.0 suspend to disk (hibernate)

The RHEL 5 release notes for their desktop version claim "Improved ACPI support with features such as suspend to disk" but this isn't working with CentOS 5. I've installed all the packages and updates for CentOS 5 i386 on a ThinkPad T43 but when selecting suspend, Gnome pops up a URL to a site that didn't seem to give a solution. Gnome makes an entry in /var/log/messages indicating that the suspend button was pressed, immediately followed by the "Resuming computer" message. Suspend to ram and suspend to disk work on Ubuntu 6.10 on this machine with an older kernel (2.6.17-10-generic) than CentOS 5 has. Are there some packages or a different kernel that should be installed? Will this feature be added to CentOS 5 or is it considered a server distro that doesn't need this? Thinkwiki.org mentions the swsusp program but it seems to be absent. CentOS 4 and CentOS 5 have been running well on this machine but having the suspend feature would be very nice. Vsftpd problem

Hi all, I have a filesystem which I need to make available through ftp ( vsftpd ). I have this as separate filesystem as it needs to be available through apache and NFS also. It's our local mirror. I've set up vsftpd and put a test directory in /var/ftp/pub and it works. However I can't seem to get it to see the separate /mirrors filesystem. I've tried using symlinks as below in /var/ftp/pub. drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 26 10:53 . drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 22 12:11 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 25 Jun 22 12:21 .message drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 22 15:25 TEST lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jun 26 10:53 mirrors -> /mirrors I this case the TEST directory works but the mirrors directory does not. ftp> cd mirrors 550 Failed to change directory. snmpd log messages

I updated to CentOS 4.5 yesterday and now I am finding the snmpd daemon is logging reams and reams of these messages: May 20 10:40:03 mx01 snmpd[2572]: Connection from - 127.0.0.1 May 20 10:40:03 mx01 snmpd[2572]: transport socket = 12 Is there a way to turn off this useless logging? I am getting these every 5 minutes (every time MRTG updates my MailScanner statistics). So far what I tried was to take off the -a switch when starting snmpd. That didn't help. Firefox and Thunderbird 2.0, Centos 5, and rpms

I am making some progress on my Centos 5 notebook build. So I am looking at Firefox and Thunderbird 2.0. Should I install them? Or is Redhat correct that there is nothing improved here and wait for 3.0? (well I have not even had a chance to look at Thunderbird 2.0, that is new)? I have the install steps we covered here back on 2/2/07; but are there rpms? I did not find anything over at ATrpms. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

empty /var/log/messages

I have one centos 4.0 server which /var/log/messages was always empty (0 bytes). I wonder what has been blocking the syslog to write the log. Other (syslog) log files are fine, only messages. /etc/syslog.conf: # Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher. # Don't log private authentication messages! *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none;spampd.none -/var/log/messages .thanks

one application receive all key commands

Is there a way in centos 4 or 5 to have one application receive all keyboard events - no matter what is running. Some applications bind keys etc... and I need to get those keys no matter what and not have the application see them at all. Is there a way to do that? Jerry

logwatch reports not benig emailed

Hello, I have a couple of CentOS 5 servers, and third running in a FC6 domU. I've configured postfix on those servers to not deliver any email to the local system, but to instead relay mail to an internal mail server. I also set up /etc/aliases to send all mail to root to me, ksandhu. I can send mail on the command line, and I get it at my email address, delivered to the internal mail server: great! But, every night when logwatch runs, the damned reports never make it to my mailbox. What's worse is that I can manually run logwatch (logwatch --mailto root), and I get the report in my mailbox! All CentOS 5 servers are exhibiting the same behaviour. I've setup postfix like I always have. CentOS 4 servers with the same config are sending their logwatch reports properly. I've tried explicitly setting the path to sendmail in /etc/logwatch/conf/logwatch.conf: mailer = "/usr/sbin/sendmail -t" but, it hasn't helped. Does anyone have any ideas? OpenCA has rpm for FC4: https://www.openca.org/projects/openca/downloads.shtml Will that work for Centos 5? Gee I should just spin up a box, try it and see if it crashes and burns....... Given the interest in OpenCA in edu and k-12, it would be nice to see this readily available. Of course I am biased, as I lurk on the various edu PKI forum.

CentOS5 on Dell Latitude D620, Docking Station & Dual Monitors???

I've got a Dell Latitude D620, dell docking station and a Dell 2007WFP (20" widescreen lcd). With XP I had the laptop screen and the lcd working as dual screens. But for the life of me I cannot get CentOS5 to work with dual screens. Anyone have this working? I would greatly appreciate any assistance. -matt

When I built this new Centos 5 drive, I copied over much of my old data using cp, and did not use the -preserve option. Ouch. I need those file create dates so that documents and such sort properly, historically. I recovered much of my stuff from a tar built back in mid-May (but I missed that the tar backup ended abnormally, as I was tar-ing to a USB attached drive formatted FAT32, and at 4Gb, it stopped). Now I want to copy all of my newer files into this recovered directory. The -u option of cp and mv will do the wrong thing, of course. I want to only copy files that are NOT present in the recovered directory. I will of course still be stuck with a lot of files with a Jun 18 date that were created between the backup date and Jun 18, but at least I will be better off.... Perhaps I do a mv -f from the recovered to the misdated directory? Being careful to protect those few files that HAVE really been modified since the backup? Oh, I am talking about 30k files here.....

CentOS 5 & USB Kickstart?

Is anybody else having problems with CentOS 5 not loading the usb drivers for kickstart installations? I'm passing "linux ks=hd:sdb1:/ks.cfg," but I get a message saying it can't find the ks.cfg file and I should enter another path. I use the exact same boot options with CentOS 4 without any problems. I want to install TinyCA2 on my Centos5 setup. I had a real learning experience the last time around (last year, July) and in the end, I got the repo down from Dag's site and was cool. Now I am on Centos 5 and no TinyCA2. Can I just download the EL4 rpm from: http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el4/en/i386/dag/repodata/repoview/tinyca2-0-0.7.5-2… and do a yum localinstall ? Or do I have to wait for it to appear as an EL5 rpm?

Battery status indicator in CentOS 4.4

I've got CentOS 4.4 installed on 3 machines - two laptops and a PC. Only one, a HP Omnibook 900, shows the graphical battery status indicator (in the bottom right of the screen), but the other laptop (a new Dell Inspiron 1501) doesn't show it. Furthermore, the command /usr/bin/apm gets the response 'no apm support in kernel' - I've tried yum-updating the kernel and installing apm but to no avail. Any suggestions please as it's obviously very useful/necessary to have a battery indicator! Andy

Folks, Since approx. a half year I have run two servers with CentOS4, all was running very stable. Then I upgraded to CentOS5 (fresh install). The servers are running quite unstable since the upgrade. The system is freezing after short uptime. vncviewer package wit hcentos 5

I have xkeybindings running just fine on centos 5. I have vncviewer running in full screen mode showing another PC. When vncviewer is running is running it seems to override my xkeybindings. Is there a way to tell vncviewer to not bind to any keys?? The only keys I am binding is on the Keypad 3,4,6, 9 and Enter. Nothing that vncviewer uses anyway. How can I still have my xkeybindings active with vncviewer running? Thanks, Jerry

Wireless networking in CentOS 4.4

Trying to set up wireless networking with CentOS 4.4 on a (new Dell) laptop and have looked at http://www.ces.clemson.edu/linux/fc2- ipw2200.shtml and http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php? topic_id=2532&forum=30 regarding use of ipw2200, which is included in the kernel. The problem is that it doesn't appear to be actually installed/loaded because the Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG driver doesn't appear in the drop- down list under Devices > New > Wireless Connection in system-config- network. Also /sbin/lsmod | grep ipw doesn't produce anything - so I'm pretty baffled! Any suggestions please? Andy

Getting JPilot working

I am trying to get JPilot working. I have configed gnome-pilot-applet, but it is not talking to the USB connected Treo650. My Treo has my name as the user, so from the applet, I see also a userid (my UID on this system it seems). I try to put that on the Treo and nothing happens. I have enabled the Backup Conduit. I am using /dev/pilot, which shows up when my Treo is connected via its USB syncing cable. In JPilot in settings, I specify /dev/pilot I go install user and install the same user as in the pilot-applet. I click on sync and press the sync button on the cable and I watch all the files get backed up to my /MyPilot directory (used from pilot-applet). But NOTHING shows up in J-Pilot. Everything is still there on the Treo.... I tried removing the Eclipse RPMs and eclipse directories, and reinstalling it with yum. Centos 5.0 x86-64 install crashes with Realtek 8111B Ethrenet

While installing Centos 5.0 x86-64 on a Gigabyte GA-945GM-S2 motherboard which has Realtek 8111B Ethernet chip - Anaconda crashes. I select the option to use the Centos online repository for extra packages - I am asked to enter IP address etc. The drop box to select the Ethernet interface is blank. If I enter valid IP address and gateway - anaconda crashes and the system reboots from CD. I think that the NIC chip is not correctly detected by anaconda - and there must be a problem in the logic which allows anaconda to try to connect to the network without any available network adaptor. Incidentally - I also use a version of Linux called Trinity Rescue. The current version of trinity used kernel 2.6.19.2 - and this detects and runs the same Ethernet chip fine. Maybe the newer kernel fixes the problem - or maybe the problem is specific to x86-64 architecture. In Bug report 0001947 someone reports he fixed this problem with a new driver from realtek and/or redhat. I have downloaded this driver - but can anyone point me to instructions on how to compile and install it? I have built a Centos 5.0 without network support. Alternatively - does anyone know when we expect a Centos 5.1 release? Is there a beta I can get hold of before the release? Alternatively - can I download updates for the Centos 5 from a yum repository using a working cetos 4.4 installation - then use yum or rpm to install a new kernel or driver on the Centos 5.0 system? Can anyone suggest were I would find instructions on how to do this? Thanks Richard.

Exe file size is chaning during runtime

Then we compared the strings output of the two. The difference is given below. We are not sure why this is happening. ipmi regression in 4.5?

I've been monitoring CPU temperature on a few Dell SC1435s running CentOS4 via OpenIPMI and 'ipmitool sdr'. It's been working very nicely, but the upgrade to 4.5 not so long ago seems to have broken something: # ipmitool sdr type Temperature Temp | 01h | ns | 3.1 | Disabled Planar Temp | 04h | ok | 7.1 | 30 degrees C Temp Interface | 53h | ns | 7.1 | Disabled The disabled sensors above used to work fine, and there have been no config changes or bios upgrades or anything. How can I set NIC duplex before installation?

Hello, I have installed CentOS 5 onto a server this afternoon using NFS. The NFS 'server' has a 100Mb/full-duplex interface, the server I installed CentOS on to has 4 x 100Mb interfaces. However, the installation was painfully slow to start with, and by using ctrl-alt-f2/f4/f5 I could see that contact with the NFS server was intermitently failing. Soon after some of the packages had installed the 'ethtool' command was then available, and I could see that the (installation) server NIC had been set to 100Mb but at half-duplex. This was causing numerous collisions and errors on the NIC interface. As soon as I reset the NIC to full-duplex (via ctrl-alt-f2 and using ethtool), then the installation speeded up and seemed to cause no more errors. My question is, how can I tell anaconda to set the NIC interface options such as speed and duplex? I have another server to install which has 2 x gigabit NICs and 2 x 100MB NIC's. My concern is that anaconda will again use wrong NIC parameters, and the installation will again be very slow. Surely it is possible to set the NIC options? I haven't been able to find a KDiff3 RPM (http://kdiff3.sourceforge.net) that will install on CentOS 4, and I am also having problems building it from source (the application that is, not the RPM). Hi all, I've a CentOS box which as two NIC; this box is also a router for LAN subnet: ------------------------------------ | eth0 (external) 172.0.0.1 | | eth1 (internal) 192.168.1.1 | ------------------------------------ | LAN clients (192.168.1.2+) I want to allow http acces only for two LAN boxes; an only http access, which means that others protocols as smtp, pop3, imap and so on will be permited. The rest of LAN boxes will be redirected to a local http service (192.168.1.1:80) I think the best way is creating a iptables rules based on MAC address. So, the rules I've made are: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 -m mac --mac-source ! xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.1.1:80 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 -m mac --mac-source ! xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.1.1:80 Please, note the exclamation symbol, which means a logical negation. But it seems doesn't work correctly: all the LAN clients can suffer the web. ¿?¿?¿

Hello list, did someone have a similar issue like I have? -> Bought an AMD X2 3600+ and an Asus M2V (with Attansic L1 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter). Installed Centos 5 64_x86 and build atl1 from this source -> http://www.hogchain.net/attansic/AtL1Linux_v1.0.41.0.tar.gz After an insmod atl1 Centos say good bye with a kernel panic. I could only remind that there stand "Bad RIP value." and "_stext...." The driver runs fine with a non-xen kernel. Sorry for my scanty description. Its only a general question. Do someone have some informations? With google I don't have success. My next step is mailing to xen mailinglist. Thanks!

Nautilus displays open document files of OpenOffice.org2 as ZIP files

Hi, the openoffice.org2 RPMs for CentOS 4.5 work very well, but there seems to be some integration missing. OO2 saves all files in the new Open Document Format, e.g. .ods, which is displayed by nautilus as a simple ZIP file (which isn't that wrong). But this means that you can't open the files directly by using a double click. /usr/bin/file seems to have the same problem, it doesn't know that data type exactly, too. file reports it as "Zip archive data, at least v2.0 to extract" Does anybody know if it's planned to improve the integration, so that it works like for the old OpenOffice.org? cu, boris

Static linking against glibc

I'm building an RPM of a DNS server called NSD on CentOS 4.4. I'm going to be using it for some heavy-duty DNS traffic, so I want to minimise its dependencies on external libraries. I have therefore attempted to link it statically. The package does build, and even runs fine. However, during the build process, gcc emits warnings like these: nsd.o(.text+0xfba): In function `main': : warning: Using 'getpwnam' in statically linked applications requires at runtime the shared libraries from the glibc version used for linking My understanding of this is because glibc uses dlopen to load other shared objects at runtime. I therefore need a Requires: line in the RPM which requires glibc-2.3.4-2.36, or whatever version I used to build nsd. Now, what I want to ask is: if the version of glibc is upgraded to say 2.3.4-2.48, what happens? What do the numbers after the version number mean (2.48) and what effect will that have on packages which are statically linked against glibc? Another question which has occured to me is this: NSD also uses other libraries, such as openssl. Is there any way to know if any of the openssl libraries use dlopen to load in other shared objects? If they do, then it introduces dependencies that I may not be aware of, and doing static linking wouldn't be as beneficial as I first thought it would be. Comments from experienced developers will be most appreciated. -- Anand Buddhdev

OT: vmware server not accepting root password?

Sorry for the OT question; I'm hoping someone else has a similar setup and ran into this same problem? For some reason, not sure what I changed, my vmware server is no longer accepting the root login for the management console or web mui interface. I'm certain the password is correct, and I've even reset root's password to make sure. VMware seems to be running ok, I can access my virtual machines just fine, as well as start and stop the vmware service. The host OS is centos 4.5 x86-64, nothing special, just a bare bones server install. Any ideas on resetting what vmware considers the root password, or re-syncing it somehow? network raid file system/server

hi, we've a few 10-20 server in a lan each has 4-8 hdd. we'd like to create one big file server on these server hard disks and we'd like to create it in a redundant way ie: - if one (or more) of the hdd or server fails the whole filesystem still usable and consistent. - any server in this farm can see the same storage/filesystem. it's someting a big network raid5-6... storage where we have about 40<partition added to the same network volume. and there is an fs over it which hide all internal network raid functionality. is there any such solution? i can't find any way to do this on our linux servers. thank you for your help in advance. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

Bug in initscripts? Problem with ifup-routes and alias device

Hello List, I have one network card and added two IP-Adresses to it: eth1 192.168.1.1/24 eth1:1 10.1.2.3/24 a want to use static routes on device eth1:1 and added one in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route-eth1:1: GATEWAY0=10.1.2.4 ADDRESS0=10.2.2.0 NETMASK0=255.255.255.0 What the network-script should execute in background is: ip route add 10.2.2.0/24 via 10.1.2.4 dev eth1 but it executes ip route add 10.2.2.0/24 via 10.1.2.4 dev eth1:1 BUT: "eth1:1" is in the "ip" command not working, "ip" throws an error ("Cannot find device eth1:1") and doesn't add the route. CentOS 5 LiveCD - When?

My GF is considering leaving Debian due to it not recognizing her hardware very well, and I thought a CentOS 5 LiveCD might be a reasonable way for her to see whether CentOS might do a better job. Hi all, I've got a new LCD 19" monitor. It's a good device, but I always work into a shell environment, so the fonts size is too big for comfortable activity. I've tried to increase the resolution adding the vga=VALUE parameter in kernel-xen line, but it seems not work. Livecd question

I feel a litle foolish, having to bother the list with a dumb question. I used the livecd for a while a few months ago and was able to save my configuration changes between sessions. I was away doing other things for a while and now I can't remember the commands to store and retrieve the changes, nor have I been able to find the instructions on how to do that after several days looking. Apreciate any help.

Hi list Im in the process of switching from a RedHat EL 4 to CentOS 5, and run into some problems Im trying to open a X session to my Centos box, and got an error message stating that /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm is not found. Unable to access mirrors

Just did a fresh install of CentOS 5 x86_64 on a vmware virtual box. Have done this successfully in the past but now run into problems with yum and perl CPAN. The error I get: http://centos.arcticnetwork.ca/5.0/os/x86_64/repodata/primary.xml.gz: [Errno 12] Timeout: <urlopen error timed out> Trying other mirror. continues until it runs out of mirrors. I'm able to access everything, ie: ping google.com lynx google.com is fine. I've tried halting iptables (I'm behind router) all to no avail. Hi All I was wondering if anyone has installed CentOS 4.x on the following configuration? Our specs for the server are ASUS P5VD2-VM Motherboard, Intel Core2Duo processor, 2 x 250GB Seagate SATA HDD with 2GB RAM. I am currently trying to install SME Server 7.1 on this configuration. Simple shared authentication method

Hi all, I'm setting up an old server to became the core server of our local lug and I'm on trouble choosing an easy yet powerful method for authentication. I think it would be nice to have a single method for authenticating local accounts, email, joomla and so on, and to be able to add another server and use the same method in the future. I am looking now at openldap but I start thinking it's too complex for the task of single sign on... or at least I am missing an easy graphical tool to setup just users and passwords (ldapbrowser and directory_assistant aren't working, and I don't have too much time to spend on learning command-line tools). Does anyone have a suggestion for an easy Single Sign On server? Tia Lorenzo Quatrini p.s. Of course all the above under CentOS 5 ;)

Is it difficult to build cobbler on Centos or should I just go with Fedora on this one? Basically, if you have experience succeeeding at this, can you drop me a link to a Howto or describe the issues? I am only writing this because I tried, and ran into quite a few dependency issues with upstream/downstream packages, and would rather concentrate on just getting a nice working Cobbler (and Puppet too for that matter). Not looking for responses for the sake or responses per se, -i'm happy to do what's needed, but not seeing any repos for it either so.... -krb

Program that opens documents with their associated program

This may be a TOTALLY trivial question (and maybe inappropriate for this list), but I don't know where else to ask it: On my Mac I've got this wonderful command line utility that opens documents with the program that is associated to them in the Finder (the graphical file manager) like they were clicked in the file-manager. For instance: if I type open testdocument.doc it opens the file with Word or OpenOffice (whatever is associated with the document type .doc). This is quite convenient (don't have to leave the shell to open a document) My question: Is there a similar command on CentOS (or more specifially GNOME, because obviously it has to take the associations from some kind of GUI-filemanager)? I was looking around, but this is the kind of question where googling doesn't turn up anything useful unless you know the name of the command. Thanks

How To Free memory

Hi All, My CentOS 5.0 is running on x86 machine with 4GB RAM. It runs as a webserver and there is a small java applet application. When the system is fresh reboot, there is below 1GB of used memory and as times go , the used memory increased to over 3.5GB. Is there a way to free memory out like those program which works under Windows? Thank you.

Problem with yum after upgrading from 4.5 to 5.0

Hello, Have pretty much figured out I can't use plugins since upgrading. If I use yum update --noplugins to get the updates for 5.0, I get: Warning: rpmts_HdrFromFdno: Header V# DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e8562897 Public key for samba-common-3.0.23c-2.el5.2.0.2.i386.rpm is not installed I looked back through the archives and think I may need a rpmforge-release key but have not been able to find it. Is this right? Anyone have a link for it? TIA

I tried webmin but the webmin vacation module points to a nonexistant link. And the usermin module is very old and requires the user to do it by themselves. Hey Guys, We have a central server which runs centos, most of the client machines run on windows. Does anybody know of a solution whereby we can manage antivirus for all the clients from the centos server? I know there are management consoles for managing antivirus on windows but we dont want to run a windows server.. Anybody have any ideas? Disk errors on CentOS 5 - libata bug?

I just installed CentOS 5 on a computer. On boot, I get the a error message, related to 2 SATA disks. These errors did NOT appear on version 4.4 with the EXACT same hardware. Despite the error messages, the disks seem to be working with no problems. Could someone please tell me what these error are and if there is some known way to prevent them? I searched the Net for these errors and they seem to appear with a wide range of disks, controlers and chips set brands, even with different Linux distributions. The issue seems to be related to the last few kernel versions and is perhaps a bug or ill implemented "feature" of libata. Correct xen domains path

According to http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Xen/InstallingCentOSDomU?highlight=%28xen%29 it would be /srv/xen or even /var/lib/xen/images. ¿What is the correct absolute path to put into the xen domains files? 2. Migration help please - moving OS to a different LVM partition

I have set up a migration between two drives. fIrst I got Centos 5 working how I wanted on this drive, then set about copying it to another drive. The Centos files on both drives are in sub-partitions in an LVM partition on their respective drives. I first did a minimum install on the new drive and saved all those files to a separate directory. The LVM partititons and sub-partitions all have unique names. Well it has been a bit of a struggle to say it nicely. Seems the LVM names are buried all over the place. Of course I had to change /boot/grub/grub.conf, /boot/grub/menu.lst, and /etc/fstab But more than that was the contents of /etc/lvm So for those I just restored what was created in the minimum install. Still I cannot get the new drive to boot. If I boot with the latest kernel (which I copied to the new drive), I get a message finding the new LVM partition, could not find the old LVM partition then: Mount: could no find filesystem /dev/root and a kernel panic. If I get the boot menu and select the kernel installed with the minimum install, it gets a little further. It still tries to find the old LVM partition, cannot find /lib/modules.dep in the /lib/modules directory for this kernel (forget the whole filename), and then: fsck.ext3 Unable to resolve 'label=/boot' and then get dropped into a maintenance mode with the file system mounted in readonly mode. So what Have I Missed? Or is this a lost cause and I should just do a full install on the new drive and proceed from there????

The list of drivers doesn't include a specific one for this card - Dell wireless 1390 Mini PCI network card 802.11b/g (according to the manufacturer's blurb). Gnome Taskbar(s)

Question: All the newer Gnome distributions seem to configure themselves with two small "taskbars" (panels, I guess) one at the top and one at the bottom. I prefer the older scheme with one larger one (usually) at the bottom. When I install Centos5 in the near future I'm going to want to be able to restore the old-style panels. Anybody know what I need to change to make it work in the old way? One of my user's processes shows up with the uid (numeric) rather than the user (alpha) on the ps command. how to change distro live?

hi, we've got many mandrake 8,9 and 10 system remotely. we'd like to remotely replace these systems to centos 5. we've 4 disk in them. one is the system drive (no need for raid) and there is free space on the remaining 3 disk. so what we think about: - download the new system to the data disks - install grub (mandrake has lilo) to boot the old system and reboot - create the old system in the data disk - update grub to boot the old system from the data disk and reboot - repartition the system disk - transfer the new system to the system disk - update grub to boot form new system disk and reboot. this seems to easy but has many very dangerous steps and we has only remote ssh access to the system. if we loose the connections we can't access the system anymore and we've to travel a lot! another constrain that we should have to do this very fast ie. it'd be nice if the system wouldn't be down for a long time. - what would be the best method for this? - what are the dangerous step here? - what would be the best way and format to transfer the new system to the disk (we think about an iso file)? - does anybody do such thing and what is his experience? thank you for your help in advance. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

yumex 'crashed' - anyway to resume?

I spent quite a bit of time setting up what I wanted to update and install via yumex. I left my system for a few minutes to attend to another computer. A helpful family member logged me off without checking. So can I recapture what I had queued? I cannot find anything that looks like a yumex queue file. yum.log does not have any updates from today.... :(

Usually, to manual partition the disks I use the installation disk in recovery mode.. The partition schema I choose was: /dev/sda1 /boot /dev/sda2 swap /dev/sda3 LVM PV inside the LVM VG I created the following LV / /var /home /tmp Then I formatted all the partitions with ext3 (doing some tuning on ext3 parameters) After I had partitioned and formatted the disk I booted from the installation CD and I installed centos 5 without any error. The installed system was not able to boot at all , the boot process ends with a kernel panic when trying to mount the root partition. On the same hardware Itryed to install centos 5 choosing the deafult auto partition option and the resulting system was ok. What's wrong ? What did i miss ? CentOS 5 and Xen Windows domU

Has anyone been able to get a Xen Windows domU to install or work properly on CentOS 5? I'm trying to do that now. It's able to boot and start he installation (from ISO), but after partitioning the disk and copying a few files to the hard drive, it cannot boot into the graphical installer. Upgrade of dovecot broke imap (CentOS 4.5)

I just did a yum update and one of the packages updated was dovecot. I've been using this for imap/pop3 for quite a while. Now, however, I get an error when trying to login under any account. It gives "bad user or password" errors for every user. The user can ssh in just fine and run mutt or pine. But trying to get in with evolution, or even squirrelmail, just gives me an evil laugh and the finger. Anyone run into this? I was planning to upgrade the box to CentOS 5 next month but I may do it sooner if it will fix this. Thanks, Joe P.S.
