Wireless mouse problem

Hello all, Just for kicks I plugged in a Microsoft wireless optical desktop 1000 keyboard/mouse combo into my Centos 4.5 machine. It recognized it on boot and configured it and it mostly works good. The issue is with the mouse, when I hold it over a folder on my desktop for a second or so it grabs the folder and opens a small menu as if I was using my middle button on my Logitech. All this happens without me touching a button. It also opens links in firefox (seemingly at random) and brings background windows to the front as soon as the cursor touches them. I know it's probably my punishment for using something with that name on it, but I really didn't expect it to work as well as it does. Does anyone have any ideas of config files or any other things I could try to get this working better. It is a USB keyboard/mouse with a single receiver, and the machine is fully updated. Do I really have the right ATrpms repo?

I copied exactly where Axel provided into atrmps.repo. I have the line: atrpms.repo:baseurl=http://dl.atrpms.net/el5-x86_64/atrpms/stable but the rpms that are being flagged as updates pretty much all have fc5 in their names. e.g.: ---> Package mplayer-fonts.noarch 4:1.0-7.at set to be updated ---> Package mplayer.i386 4:1.0-60_r23482.fc5 set to be updated ---> Package zonecheck.noarch 0:2.0.4-3.fc5.at set to be updated ???

Copying my new Centos 5 to my main drive

Well it is now time to take the final upgrade steps. I have spent a bit of time looking here in the archives and googling along on migration, cloning, and copying and don't think I found any approach that includes first setting partitions as you like.... I am working with a different partition setup for Centos 5 than 4 (I've learned a few things in the past year). So I plan is: Do minimum install of Centos 5 to my main drive, using my new partitioning scheme: A /boot ext3 partition. A swap partition. A LVM partition with: a / ext3 sub-partition. a /home ext3 sub-partition. while booted from this minimum install, use cp to copy the following directories from the test drive to something like /home/working: boot, bin, lib, misc, opt, sbin, sys, usr, etc, var, root, tmp In otherwords skip: lost+found, mnt, proc, selinux, home, media, net, tftpboot, srv The reason for including boot is to get the newer kernels. This opens the question of is there anything in places like proc and dev that I need to get becuase they were updated since the 5.0 ISO images? Once copied, boot from the test drive, mount the old drive, copy from /home/working to the 'real' directories. Switch drives again, and I should be operational....

Kickstart stopped working

I've been using kickstart for a while now, but today I tried to kickstart a system and it's just not working at all. I can't figure out why it's hanging. I booted from the CentOS 4.5 CD #1 and typed "linux ks=http:// centosmirror/ks/sys20.cfg". If I check my web server's log, I can see that sys20.cfg was accessed. This file begins with the following lines: install url --url http://centosmirror/ Looking at the text in alternate console 3 (or was it 4), I can see that it got an IP address via DHCP, got the config file mentioned above, set the hostname as specified in the config file, and then ends with the following messages: trying to mount CD device hdc mntloop loop0 on /mnt/runtime as /mnt/source/CentOS/base/ stage2.img fd is 21 transferring http://centosmirror//./CentOS/base/product.img to a fd transferring http://centosmirror//./disc1/CentOS/base/product.img to a fd A long time (5 minutes?) passed between the last two lines, and then the entire things repeats (with some additional output lines that I didn't bother to write down). First, I don't have a product.img file in my base directory. In a recent thread on this list about doing an ftp install, I remember reading that copying stage2.img to product.img helped, so I created a hard link between the two. Second, looking at the webserver logs, there is no mention of product.img or stage2.img. Finally, there is no alternate console #2, so I can't get a shell prompt to poke around a little more. I've done dozens of kickstarts in the past using this server, but I don't remember if I've successfully done a kickstart install since 4.5 came out. Are there some known issues with kickstart in 4.5? I rsync my local repo every night from one of the public mirrors. Alfred

Centos 5 - Setting up yum for ATrpms

I think I found one of my setup problems. I followed instructions at: http://atrpms.net/install.html And now I see that the information shown there to put into yum.conf (that I put into yum.repo.d/atrpms.repo) is only for FC, not for RL5 (thus Centos 5). What do I use in my atrmps.repo to get it to access the RL5 directories?

GUI Login Screen for CentOS 5

I installed CentOS using the option for a GUI Server with GRUB and GNOME. When it boots it stops at a text login screen, which is not desirable in our setup. I want it to start at the GUI login screen and not have to press 'Ctrl Alt F7' to bring this screen up. I thought this was controlled by /etc/inittab but it is setup correctly for runlevel 5. How can I correct this setup? Mark

I have not installed the madwifi specific kernel stuff (kdml and hal-kdml) from atrpms. I have installed with wpa rpms. And my Atheros card is working with almost no work on my part (other than runing wpa_supplicant as a deamon). Nice!

diagnosing strange crash/hang

This morning I get a call that a server is down. The server in question is a vmware guest, windows 2003 advanced. The host is vmware server 1.01, running on centos 4.4 x64 on a poweredge 2950. The server has 16g of ram and a quadcore cpu, storage is provided by a perc 5/i, raid 1 across two 146gb sas drives. I was able to ssh into the host. After trying to ping the guest, and trying to connect to vmware via the management console, I decided to restart the vmware service. so I type service vmware restart. it hung on "shutting down virtual machines". I was able to ctrl-c out, and decided to manually kill the vmware processes. after killing all the vmware stuff, I did a service vmware start. I get an error "cannot touch /etc/vmware/locations: read only file system" /etc is part of /, which mount claimed was mounted RW so I try cat /var/log/messages and get nothing so I tell the machine to reboot (remotely). of course, it doesn't come back up on its own, so I drive to the location. the machine is running, but sitting at a black screen. I don't know what state it was in, so did a forced turn off. turning it back on, it proceeded to boot normally. it had a slight pause while it ran fsck on / but other than that, no errors. the vm's restarted normally, /var/log/messages is back, but has no entries between June 15 and when I rebooted it the 2nd time on June 18. any ideas on where I should start looking? is there some way to read array status from a Perc controller under linux? any suggestions will be appreciated! thanks Gordon

mounting an lvm partition via a USB adapter

I am trying to mount this (my old hard drive) from my Centos 5 install as a USB drive so I can copy files over. I have made the change to max_luns so that I can have more than one drive on a USB drive. The first partition, /dev/sda1 mounts automatically as /boot_ The second partition, /dev/sda2 is the one I really want and it is an lvm partition. When I am booted from this drive (as the installed IDE drive, not as a usb drive) has for its /etc/fstab: # This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 / ext3 defaults 1 1 LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2 none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol02 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 swap swap defaults 0 0 But I do not see any /dev/Vol... when I boot from my Centos 5 drive (oh, I have labeled the lvm partitions on that drive to start with Centos5 so that its labels are different from my Centos 4 drive lablels). What mount command do I use?

CentOSplus Postfix with mysql/pgsql

OT - IP Tables - forwarding to localhost

Hi, I am trying to set up a firewall rule so calls to old_mailserver:25 get redirected to localhost:25. I have seen quite a few rules and none seem to work. I have tried with the firewall enabled (configured to allow smtp) and disabled, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. One of the commands I have been using is: /sbin/iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp -d old_mailserver_ip/32 --dport 25 -j REDIRECT --to 127.0.0.1:25 Am I missing anything? Hi, I have to move IMAP mail store from FC Dag's dovecot 0.99.14 to new Centos4 machine. Dovecot complains about corrupted indexes, Missing location field, Data position of record xxx points outside file etc. There's no 0.99.14 version for EL4 in rpmforge. Distribusion version is three steps down - 0.99.11. Any hints? Thanks a lot. David PS: I have rsynced all maildir Friday and today I had to move to the old machine :o(

Hey Guys, Thanks to everybody who responded to my first email.. Been thinking about this a bit more. Does anybody know if its possible to have all desktops running antivirus logging alerts and to a central linux server which could log to mysql? Would be really handy for reporting. I can see that the updates can be downloaded from a share on a linux server but Im wondering about storing logging data and maybe configuration? Pretty much everything out there these days has a way to log into sql except I can find an antivirus that can do this? Then our current centos server could be a central console for all the antivirus apps on the client windows machines.. Is this possible? To have antvirus alerts logged to sql centrally? Would be pretty sweet... Thanks, Wayne

migration considerations

Hi, I've got a 3ware 9550SX-4LP on a dual xeon 3.6GHz machine (no HVM possible). 4 SATA-HDs in RAID 5 installed. xen 3.0.3 with centos-4.4 as xen0. centos-4.4 is also installed on the numerous xenUs. The xenUs are installed in LVs which are formatted as xfs. Now I'd like to move over to centos 5.0 This is what I thought to be good as an upgrade procedure: 1) install a xen0 to a (bootable) USB hard disk this allows me to go back to my old configuration as soon as I encounter irresolvable probs 2) mount xenU-partitions from xen0 and put modules from the centos5-supplied kernel in there with this test I also test if the 3w_9xxx driver runs smoothly, I'll try bonnie++. 3) run xenUs and test them (Will they run and work?) 4) if all runs good, install xen0 over the old xen0, make backup before. My particular question here is: As it's important to have the 3w_9xxx driver properly loaded with this step, is there anything special I shouldn't forget here? All this shouldn't take me more than 2 hours. What's your opinion? Any more hints? According to this link, https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2007-0331.html conga, ricci and luci have updates available. I can't find these updates on the mirrors I checked. They are in: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/os/x86_64/CentOS/ but not in: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/updates/x86_64/RPMS/ Anyone have any ideas about this? TIA Dave

I've been working on a way to send faxes from a bash script. It requires changing what parameters are used for each command. I keep having problems with quoted strings passed to the command. I've created a really short test script which fails on my system. commandline="sendfax -f noreply(a)prudentrx.com -n -x \"Test fax\" -d 13105551212 /etc/hosts" echo "Commandline: $commandline" $commandline When I run the script I get the following: Commandline: sendfax -f jwarren(a)prudentrx.com -n -x "Test fax" -d 13105551212 /etc/hosts fax": Can not open file As you can see the sendfax command is not picking up the "'s around the "Test fax" string so it picks up the Test but thinks fax is the file to fax. If you take the string and execute it from the command line it works. There is something about executing it from a string within a script that causes it to fail. I tried doing the same thing using mail as the command with a quoted subject. Same thing happens, it break after the first space in the subject when executed from a sctips. I've tried using both sh and exec commands but still no joy. I really need to be able to build a command line with quoted text. Anyone have a way to work around this. Centos 5, X dies, I cry

I just installed Centos 5 for my notebook (HP compaq nc4010) on a separate drive (than this one that has Centos 4.5). When I first booted after all the setup, X did not start. hmm. Rebooted, and X came up fine. I did a bunch of customizing and upgraded the kernel Rebooted, X did not start. Rebooted X started fine. I checked some things out then tried the Suspend feature. Not supprisingly, the system would not come back properly out of suspend. So I pulled the battery and rebooted. Now no X. I looked at the Xorg.0.log and did see one error (but did not write it down, grrr). I have tried to mount that drive via a USB connector, but automount is not handling it, and I don't know how to start working out mounting it manually. SO.... What happened? Oh, not nVidea (or whatever those threads on a video problem is). My video card is the: "ATI Technologies Inc PCI Bridge [IGP 340M]" Is something still wrong becuase of the attempt to try Suspend? Where do I look and what do I change? Possiblely I messed up in customizing? But I did run system-config-display and set things as they are here in Centos 4.5, and rebooted. No change.... please help!

I have weird problem. I'll try to build rpm-package from Brian Lane's Digitemp. Everything seems to go OK, but..... which commands do you use to SSL certify your own server?

Hello, I am going to build an email server on Centos for a small, private group of users and I just want to encrypt all communications between that server and the (remote) email clients of those users (or they browsers, when they use webmail). Client certificates are not necessary, at least now. I understand that to do that I need to create my own SSL CA, create with it a self signed certificate and key pair and make sure that the private key is not encrypted, so the server restarts unattended in case of a reboot. I have already looked at man pages and a few online tutorials, but frankly they are not clear on what to do to achieve all and _only_ what I wrote above. Most documentation, when not outdated, seems targeted at much more complex scenarions. Is this sequence of actions and commands correct and complete for my case, or not: 1) cd /usr/share/ssl 2) modify openssl.cnf to have your Common Name and other parameters 3) run: ./CA -newca ./CA -newreq-nodes 4) move the private key from the .pem file to a separate file 5) put the cert and key file in a location where Postfix, 6) Dovecot and Apache can all use them 7) configure each of those servers to use the certificate What have I missed? Thank you in advance for any feedback (I'll have access to the server only over the weekend, but it would be great to have this issue as clear as possible before starting...) Marco

CentOS5: Loss of Prompt & Cursor in Virtual Console Mode

When I log into a virtual console (e.g.,#4) as ordinary user, I initially have a prompt & cursor. I then do several ls -l /home/user-name and several lines of data. If the number of lines is less than it takes to fill the screen, I will retain the prompt & cursor. If the number of lines (resulting from that last command) fills the screen or more, the last visible line will be data instead of the prompt & cursor. The up arrow no longer gives the previous commands. A clear command will restore the prompt & cursor. This bug appeared a week or two after I installed CentOS5. Bob T.

ip_conntrack table filling up, dropping packets

Hi, my ip_conntrack table is filling up and now my server is dropping packets. I'm running CentOS release 4.4 (Final) on a fairly busy webserver. The table is full of various connections, including a lot of "ESTABLISHED" tcp connections from my webserver (the src is my webserver ip), and some other random connections to my webserver, and many "ASSURED" connections. So why is it filling up? I changed the default timeout value like so: echo 36000 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_established but I don't think that's had any effect. any thoughts? what additional info can I provide that would be helpful? I did find a script that clears out some of the stale connections using hping2, but I don't know if that's really a great solution to this problem. cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_conntrack_max # 34576 after cleaning out the ip_conntrack table using an hping2 script: cat /proc/net/ip_conntrack | wc -l # 3702 -- this number was around 34000 before I cleared it out because it was dropping packets. rebooting the machine, of course, clears it out. I've spent many hours banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out, reading in google groups and in various forums, to no avail. My webserver does send out emails to a few thousand registered users (if they opt it for the email) every day. Thank you for your time! I hope I sent this to the right list. Freemind 0.8 problems on Centos 5

I just installed my rpms I bulit and scarfted for Freemind 0.8 on Centos 4.x on my Centos 5.0 system. I referenced all the proper 5.0 repos. But.... No keyboard control (oh, Freemind is a platform independent Java applet). That is <Enter>, <Insert>, <vntrl-S>, etc do NOTHING. The long node format does not display. I can edit the node, and see the edit dialog, but the map view does not show the contents. Any hints on where to look for the problem?

I am trying to understand Suspend 2 and what I have to do to get it working in Centos 5. There is quite a bit for it at ATrpms: http://www.atrpms.net/dist/el5/hibernate-suspend2/ http://www.atrpms.net/dist/el5/kernel-suspend2/ The later is the kernel patches that they refer to at the Suspend2 website, so I don't have to recompile the kernel? I noticed that over at: http://www.atrpms.net/dist/el5/madwifi/ There are even rpms for BOTH Suspend2 and Madwifi (my situation, and I have been using the 'regular' madwifi parts for over a year now). So can anyone give me a bit of guidance/confirmation on setting up Suspend2. Thanks.

Since CentOS 4 turned out to be short on supporting my sound card, I picked up a the DVD for 5. I have been running 4 on this PC fine though. The install hangs in "Checking dependencies in packages selected for installation..." with the bar at 3/4 or so. I thought this was because I took the offer to upgrade my CentOS 4 installation, but it hangs at the same spot for a new install, even when I do not tamper with the selected packages. What's my approach to move forward? I did check the DVD with the verification step. Rob

I suppose RHEL5 doesn't have FF2 because "it's too new", but here is what I terribly miss while using FF1.5: -- saving the whole session, even when FF crashes (yes, FF _may_ crash); it saves even the text you were writing in a textarea! -- spell-checking (extremely useful when you're not a native speaker). But indeed is kinda shame that there isn't any 3rd party repo providing FF2 for EL5. (I don't expect EPEL to have it. because FC6 was on FF1.5 too). dell 2950 servers and centos 4 or 5

Greetings Part of this may be OT Anyone running CentOS 4 or 5 with the newer Dell 2950 servers? Mainly thinking in terms of basic Internet facing applications Anything special to report good or challenging? Any hardware or drivers issues? Anything not to order as an option or not do? Should one stick to dual core or go to quad core? Does it really matter? What is the best way to order raid1 and raid5 storage on these units with and without hot plug Will either way keep the deployment of CentOS easy and happy. I am used to ordering and deploying hp proliant intel rackmount servers using 3.5 hotplug scsi Im not that familiar with the terms on the dell website for SAS (cant tell if hotplug) although I know what SATA is and I am not familiar with Serial-Attach SCSI hotplug. Hi all, I would very much appreciate any suggestions on any online resources, or even a decent book to purchase with the focus of brushing up on Linux command line tools. The focus is on troubleshooting type commands, adding users from command line and so forth. While I am reasonably comfortable using the command line, I will be the first to admit I am slow on some things and have gaps in my knowledge especially for those commands I have never needed to use. I tend to use Webmin for a lot of things. For an upcoming job transition I need to fill in the gaps to be able to do these same things I currently do via webmin at the command line. So any suggestions/pointers, etc would be very much appreciated. I wonder if there is a Linux for Dummies book out there (provided it deals with the command line vs. a GUI). Thanks Dale

kickstart fails statically built custom kernel: anaconda doesn't honor static NIC/SATA driver in kernel?

Kickstart fails for statically built custom booting kernel, although the custom kernel is built form the same version stock kernel source. My anaconda and kernel source are both of stock versions on Centos 5. At the kickstart 'F3' screen, the following error messages appear: Modules to insert tg3 ... ... ERROR: no network devices in choose network device! ERROR: no network drivers for doing kickstart ERROR: unable to bring up network. The network card driver tg3 is statically built into custom kernel to fix NIC driver loading sequence problem( I have mixed type NICs on these boxes), so there is no tg3.ko in my rolled modules/modules.cgz file. Does this problem mean that kickstart/anaconda doesn't recognize NIC/SATA drivers statically built into booting kernel? Anaconda needs everything to exist in dynamic module form (*.ko in modules.cgz)? Thanks.

Ndiswrapper for Realtek 8180L on CentOS 5.0

Hello, I had installed CentOS 5.0 on my desktop PC having a Realtek 8180L based PCI wireless card. Since the drivers for this chip are not available in the kernel, I created RPMs for ndiswrapper-1.43 from the source code and installed them. I could configure the wireless card and use it but invariably the system freezes after sometime. No such thing happens if the wireless card is disabled. In the past, I have been using ndiswrapper on the same system on CentOS 4.3 and 4.4 and multiple Fedora distributions without any problem. I have also updated to the latest kernel and recreated the ndiswrapper modules but the problem persists. What could be the possible reason ? Thanks, Manish

Dual boot in CentOS 4.4

I've recently upgraded from RedHat 9 to CentOS 4.4. With RH9 I had a dual boot system with Windows XP (RH9 as the default of course!), which was automatically set up when I installed RH9 in the remaining partition after I'd installed XP. However, I appear to have lost my dual boot with CentOS 4.4 (no option to boot into DOS now), even though I still have the Windows XP partition, so how can I (re-) set up the dual boot? Thanks, Andy

I am trying to bind keys on centos 5. I want to run my own APP when I hit keypad 4 and a different APP when I hit keypad 5. I was looking at xmodmap but I dont see how to execute my own command? I was looking in the gnome keyboard shortcuts but I dont see how to enter a command it only lets you change the accelerator for a given action. Not create a new action. How can I setup keypad 4 and 5 to run app1 and app2 respectively? THanks, Jerry

freq scaling on centos 5

In the old centos 4 we had cpuspeed and we could send a SIGUSR1 to it so the CPU would run at max speed. In centos 5 cpuspeed is not running. (although running with cpuspeed -C will go full speed) what is the correct way now in centos 5 to on the fly say run at full speed then sometime later tell it to drop back down? I have no process to signal any more. Jerry

Two Issues - Postfix and Gamin

Greetings, I have done a bit of searching and I have found that the 4.5 version of Postfix is the following rpm: postfix-2.2.10-1.1.el4.i386.rpm. I had previously had the CentOSPlus version with mysql compiled in and just recently upgraded to 4.5 from 4.4, upon doing this.. the above RPM was installed, which is greater than the postfix with mysql from CentOSPlus, which is the following rpm: postfix-2.2.10-1.RHEL4.2.mysql_pgsql.c4.i386.rpm (note the 2.2.10-1 version without the extra .1 from above.) I tried to manually install the postfix with mysql but of course the versioning is greater on 4.5 rpm, is there a plan to fix this or should I try to roll my own RPM with mysql included? This happened to restart during a 5am auto yum update, causing my server to bounce this morning until I found it, ooops my bad! The second issue is also with 4.5 but with Gamin. I have about 20 Linux CentOS workstations that have been running nicely for several months (almost years) and after the 4.5 upgrade I have noticed that the gam_server process with Gamin keeps sucking up all the CPU cycles after a short time of running. (Sometimes tied to screen saver use but not always). I haven't changed anything in my environment that I can see would cause this problem after the 4.5 upgrade. (Same file server for NFS mounts, same autofs entries etc). Has anyone else noticed this issue and found a work around, I did some digging but most entries on this issue are from the 2005 range which didn't fix my issue and/or were for an older version. The /etc/gamin/gaminrc didn't fix it through various mutations of entries and short of removing the gam_server from libexec, I would like to find a solution or know if anyone else has experienced this issue. Hi, I am running a CentOS 5 file server in our Windows network and I wanted to add a anti virus scanner. I got a clamav package from atrmps.net, but the samba module samba-vscan is missing. So I am not able to integrate clamav as an on-demand scanner. Does anyone know, where I can get the samba-vscan module? Thanks knilch

Problem with SquidGuard and DansGuardian

Hi All, I tried installing SquidGuard in a CentOS 4.5 server wit Squid as proxy from RPMForge but uninstalled it since I am having it fails to configure it correctly so I replace it using DansGuardian. But after configuring it and restarting the squid including start of dansguardian service, I observe that there was no effect on our client user. Our user are required have proxy settings on browser in order to browse. What did I miss please. Below are the portion from my dansguardian configuration: # you can limit it to only 1 IP. Yes only one. filterip = # the port that DansGuardian listens to. filterport = 8080 # the ip of the proxy (default is the loopback - i.e. this server) proxyip = 127.0.0.1 # the port DansGuardian connects to proxy on #proxyport = 3128 proxyport = 8888 When I change the filterport to 80, there was an error starting dansguardian saying that "Error binding server socket (is something else running on the filter port? [80])", changing it to 8080 have no problem but not able to filter anything. Can anyone please give me pointer on how to do it right? Hi, Any one know why the glibc-profile is obsoleted on centos 5 (glibc 2.5)? I've checked the glibc.spec file and find that the --disable-profile option is enabled in the configuration command. So how the original profiling functions are implemented on glibc 2.5? Is there a new way to do the same/similar thing? Hi, I applied a set of iptables rules and started iptables without any trouble. But after i edited the rules and restarting it, it gives me "Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore: line 35 failed". I looked into /etc/sysconfig/ for the mentioned file and it was not found. I did a quick check and locate only found /sbin/iptables-restore. I had done updatedb before using locate. Any ideas? thanks

Pinging Static IPs on Lan

For some reason I can't ping or communicate with two of my machines that have static IP's on my lan. My mythbe and mythfe are both set to have static ip's in the event of some sort of power problem the wife can stillwatch tv. After installing CentOS5, I can't communicate with those two machines. I read through the release notes and the docs on dhcp, but I can't seem to see why no machines will communicate with those two computers. Thanks. -- -=/>Thom

hello to all, i am a newbie to CentOS. for my project work i need to have RHEL. so i searched Google for Open alternatives and found CentOS to be most popular. i have used Fedora, the base of RHEL and CentOS. I just installed CentOS5 on my server and I have to get everything working on it. I chose to clean load it upgrading from RHEL3 to CentOS5. I'm having trouble understanding the way bind works now and was wondering if anyone has a bit of time to help me with it. Hi All, Im seeing these errors (below) between 2 and 40 times a day, for the last year (or more if i had the older logs) in /var/log/messages. The values consistently toggle between 4 or so values, drifting up and down but never outside the mean +-2 /dev/hda sits around 21 to 38 degrees (according to smartctl) Does anyone know *how* serious they are? I cant find much on the web other than the theory that any error is bad, so replace the disk. Thanks for your time, MrKiwi. Hi, I've got a Centos 5 box (recently replaced a Centos4 box of the same function). The means of applying custom SELinux policy has changed somewhat from 4->5. I've got it mostly figured out; I have a local.te file with my custom policy and also which defines a few new file types, and a local.fc with appropriate defintions of file contexts. When I run: # checkmodule -M -m -o local.mod local.te # semodule_package -o local.pp -m local.mod # semodule -i local.pp (all in /usr/share/selinux/targeted), the policy gets installed and works properly. However, I can't then use fixfiles or the like to set the custom file contexts (my custom file contexts aren't installed in the main policy). I can apply them manually with chcon, but that's icky and not "The One True Way(tm)". I've searched through the forum and read the various info at jpackage.org, and I'm a bit confused. 1) Can you point me to some reliable bit of information, even if it's laconic? 2) If I understand the info on http://jpackage.org/yum.php correctly, Java is not yet available for CentOS 5. NFSv4 hangs on file open

Hi, I have a relatively loaded CentOS5 server (64-bit, dual core) and a mixed bag of Fedora 6/CentOS4, 32-, and 64-bit clients. NFSv3 works without problem. References over NFSv4 hang occasionally, in particular on file opening. I wonder whether there is anybody here who can help to trace it, or can suggest a more appropriate forum? The one hang that I have been able to trace involved only CentOS5/2.6.18-8.1.4.el5. The server is 64-bit, client: 32-bit. Hang happened when a program was about to be executed from NFSv4 share. From one newbie to another, I suggest you look at the CentOS site, in particular the page http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=3 As I understand it, RHEL is not based on Fedora. Fedora is something of a testbed for things that often appear in future versions of RHEL, so the resemblance is not surprising. RHEL is industrial strength Linux and so does not have the latest but still wobbly innovations. What it does have is good and stable, and quite recent enough for most purposes. CentOS takes the RHEL source code, which is Open Source, and compiles it as CentOS. They aim to make it totally compatible with RHEL. CentOS is as stable as RHEL, and has what looks like a better update/upgrade process. If your project is on RHEL, then CentOS is the tool for you, just make sure you install the matching version.

Centos5 and X respawning problem

I just installed CentOS 5 on a Sony Vaio V505 (PCG-V505DC2P) and it worked perfectly. A full yum update also worked fine. The user made various changes to it over the weekend, and how I'm faced with trying to undo endless "INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes" error messages. I've spent half the day googling various answers. init 5 will not do anything. startx and xinit do work, but don't provide the proper window manager nor X window sessions. Now that I think of it, after the first yum update, the system defaulted to a tty, and I had to CNTL-Alt-F7 to switch to the X display. I also tried to install the ATI video driver, but that claimed an error in the end. I tried to comment out x:5:respawn... at #Run xdm in runlevel 5 at the end of /etc/inittab then initiate init 5 from a tty session, but that didn't do any good. Ideas would be most appreciated. System hang on messagebus -> problem with ldap?

Hi list, I've made a new CentOS 5 install with all updates. My users are sored in a ldap directory. If i reboot the machine, CentOs hangs at: starting messagebus I found the same problem at Fedora 5. The solution should be to change "etc/init.d/ladp" from 27 to 21 so it starts before messagebus (22) So is this the "right" solution or is there a other way? Thanks

Hi, I'm currently setting up a local LAMP server to test various apps. Starting from the out-of-the-box configuration of Apache, I test it, and it's OK: http://localhost shows Apache's default page OK in Firefox. Now I edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and replace 'UserDir disabled' by 'UserDir public_html'. I restart Apache. Then, as a normal user (kikinovak): $ cd $ mkdir public_html I edit a basic index.html file, then put it into this directory. I open Firefox at http://localhost/~kikinovak/ ... and I get the following error message: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /~kikinovak/ on this server. Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) Server at localhost Port 80 Q: what did I do wrong? (I've done this successfully on Slackware and Debian before) Any suggestions? Niki

Dovecot .99 Bug - LF not found where expected

After about three years of this, it seems I have finally gotten somewhere near to the bottom of this. The symptom: Suddenly a user cannot download their email. Checking again through SquirrelMail, I get an error which says a log was written. Going to the logs I see "imap(username): Error indexing mbox file /var/mail/username: LF not found where expected" Using Webmin's read mail module, I can see the messages. So, I move them to another account, but this is not yet the end of it. I was at first having to delete the mbox and then I'd send a test message in to recreate the mbox. But today, I tried a different tack. I opened the now empty mbox in vi and found one blank line (LF). I deleted that line and then moved the mail back in and everything was fixed. So the line was still left behind. The next time this happens, I'm going to try to delete a LF from the top of the mbox file to see if it is fixed without moving the mail. I have read several places, although this is extremely difficult to track as there seems to be a multiple from address issue for some releases.. but anyway, I did finally find that dovecot .99 has an issue with leaving behind an extra linefeed at the beginning of the mbox. Deleting this linefeed fixes the problem. Supposedly dovecot 1 has fixed this problem. I have found many reports of problems on Fedora and RedHat. Also, Debian has a closed bug report regarding this issue as they have moved forward to dovecot-1.0 and it doesn't have this bug. The issue seems to not have any relation to the mailserver, as I saw both reports of problems on at least Sendmail and Postfix. Why are we still bugged with this? Seems that this is a bug that RedHat should be aware of? The problem is it only rarely happens. I have no idea how to repeat the issue. It always seems to be an Outlook user, although that is by far the most prevalent email client in use by our users and it might just be chance. So, what to do from here? Bug report to RedHat? This is most irritating! I can't even guess how many times I've fixed these mboxes. I'm about ready to toss dovecot in the trash until 1 becomes the RH standard unless there is a fix or upgrade from Redhat. Thanks, John Hinton

Hi Using tar i normally create an archive etc and then unpack that archive, job done. But i am copying from one filesystem to another on the same host, they are 2 seperate nfs filesystems, and i wonder is it possible to use tar to do this as opposed to say rsync etc. tar -cvf /some/input/dir to/here etc ? thanks

CentOS and Wordpress

Hi All, I am currently am responsible for maintaining a website built on Apache 2, running on some CentOS 4 (64 bit version) boxes. Thus far, the website has comprised a few HTML pages, and some dynamic pages generated by perl scripts. The CentOS install is pretty vanilla -- the only departure I've made from the default server install is to install awstats from the rpmforge repositories. This week, I tried to install Wordpress, and have run into a brick wall that several days of experimentation and deep consultation with Google have been unable to get me over. Here's the situation: I installed the mysql, mysql_server, and php packages, unpacked the Wordpress tarball into a "blog" directory, and make the necessary changes to wp-config.php. The MySQL database works just fine, and when I visit the blog directory, index.php runs and informs me that I need to surf over to install.php to complete the WordPress configuration, which is expected. But when I try to browse to install.php, Firefox gives me the option to save it, or run it locally -- it doesn't seem to want to run as a server side script, for some reason. I don't see any obvious issues with my php installation that would cause this -- /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf is in place, is loading module_php4, and has added a php application type to the apache setup. I did remember to restart the http daemon after installing php. I don't see any errors in the logs -- all I see in the apache logs is a GET request for install.php. The really confusing thing is that one php script -- index.php -- works just fine, while another php script -- install.php -- does not. Has anybody run into a similar problem with WordPress, or with php4 in general? It feels like I'm running afoul of some bit of overzealous security that's trying to stop php from doing Bad Things to the system, but, sans error messages, it's been difficult to figure out what bit of security might be responsible, and how I might go about coaxing CentOS into allowing me to run WordPress. And so I have come here to tap into the wisdom of the mailing list. Might anybody here have some hints as to what I might do to solve this puzzle? Some threads just go on too long. Personally I think a troll has hijacked the main centos list again and is inducing food fight behaviours while that troll perfectly 'innocently' asserting that it is just respoding to all email. see: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4216011961522818645 for a discussion of the problem of 'capture' in FOSS projects.
