Redhat Cluster Manager?

I just spend a few hours working with Redhat Cluster Manager. After working through some things that deal with Centos versus the *upstream provider*, I started configuring a cluster. Even to the point of using HP ILO as the fence. Anyone using this in production? With GFS ? I have used Heartbeat V1 in the past and I am deploying a new colo so I am looking at options. how to restart the USB driver

using a previous /home dir

Hi, how can I use my previous /home partion under a new installation of cent0S5? Is it something like: mount it chown it (so the UIDs match) fstab it (suggestions here pelase) Was using fc6 that died in an update (I think XP under vm ware crashed) and segfaulted on reboot. Wanted to go to centOS anyway so... Um, the /home is a mirrored raid device across 2 disks. I can mount it fine. Sorry if this seems so simple to find it on google. I searched around and thought I'd ask before going further thinking maybe someone has a howto or would suggest a reinstall of centOS5 with it pointed to the /home directory I'd like to use. Wasn't sure how to do that without reformatting is though. I doubt this is relevant at this moment but the previous installation was i686 and the new on is x86_64 Thanks and happy to be finallying using centOS Shawn

Kernel Panic - possibly NFS related?

Hi Folks, This is my first post here, and unfortunately it's to ask for help in figuring out a kernel panic I am running into. The machine in question has run fine without problem for quite some time, running as a database/web server. It has an identical (hardware) twin that performs essentially the same functions, but which has not had any kernel panics. The only recent change I've made of note before the kernel panics started, is to set up an NFS share on both of those machines, each of which is mounted by three other machines. It seems like whenever there is any more than a negligible amount of activity over those NFS shares, that one machine gets a kernel panic. There are a relatively large number and size of files in each of the shares (70+ gigabytes, 10,000+ files), organized into directories so there aren't more than 100 or so files in any given directory. I'm not doing anything "weird" over the NFS either, just reading and writing zip files. I've never run into a kernel panic before (lucky?) and I can't find much information about analyzing the wreckage. I don't believe any log files are saved of the event. Otherwise, I would provide more information. The kernel I am using is: 2.6.18-8.1.4.el5 CentOS release 5 (Final) I don't have any unusual packages installed, just the default configuration, apache, mysql, and a few other trivial things. Thanks for any help you all can provide. If there is any glaring omissions of information, please excuse me, I'd be glad to help you all help me :) I just am not sure exactly what to provide. Glib and unknown user id with LDAP

Hello All. Anyone know how to fix this[0]? I've got some Centos 4.5 boxes running as LDAP clients (user ids are not in /etc/passwd or/etc/shadow). If I make uid 230 local on the host, there is no error message. Adobe acrobat also does the same thing. The users are able to authenticate with LDAP on login, so at least part of the system knows where to look for user ids. Looking on google seems to suggest a glib bug, but I haven't run across a patch/fix for it yet. Anyone have one? Can't connect firewire HD

Hi..... I just bought a External HD with USB/FireWire interfaces. I was trying to connect it by firewire and nothing happened, but it's connected by USB, there is no problem. This is the "fdisk - l" output when i connect it by USB Disco /dev/sdc: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes 255 cabezas, 63 sectores/pista, 19457 cilindros Unidades = cilindros de 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes With firewire, there is just nothing for the external HD The firewire port it's integrated to my motherboard as an ATX form card. Kernel statistics package availability?

Are there any good packages (or just places to look) to observe and track kernel behavior (other than to add such and build a custom kernel)? I'm doing some performance analysis on different types of i/os on different file systems, and I need far more sophisticated information than iostat or vmstat produce. SSH suddenly started failing :(

All of a sudden I can no longer ssh into my server running CentOS 4.5 This is what happens: [john@lt-131-jdl-f7 ~]$ ssh -Y -p 2222 192.168.0.1 john(a)192.168.0.1's password: Connection to 192.168.0.1 closed by remote host. Is anybody using mailavenger on a CentOS system? If so, could you post your experiences? Like quality of the program, server loads and number of email messages processed and power of server.. Those sorts of good info things. http://www.mailavenger.org/ This looks really sweet! Fighting spam before the smtp process and it looks like it works with just about any MTA. So, it could reject instead of bouncing. It looks like it deals with huge numbers of the normal nuances after receipt. Thanks, John Hinton

Location of xgraphics routines

Hi I have an application that uses the Xwindows graphics library. Things like XOpenDisplay XDrawLine XCreateSimpleWindow XDrawString and many more Under all the CENTOS 4.X systems these were automatically loaded. I dont have these loaded under my CENTOS 5 system. I get a heap of undefined references when I compile the code. Could someone tell me, point me, where these routines now reside on the distribution. thanks Peter

DatOptic RAID Array >2TB?

i'm trying to set up a hardware RAID array (eRAID from DatOptic) under CentOS. we have two more of these arrays which have worked very well for their purposes (backup and/or portable storage), but neither of our older arrays exceeded the dreaded 2TB barrier (one of them is, in fact, 2TB). the server i'm currently testing with is running CentOS4.5, but i do have CentOS5 servers i could use. the problem i'm running into is that the array SHOULD be recognized as ~3TB, but i'm unable (even using "parted") to see it as more than ~2TB. it sounds suspiciously like the typical "2TB limitation" problem, but i was under the impression that CentOS4 (and 5) can handle much larger (8TB?) filesystems. in fact, the kernel "USB Mass Storage" driver that detects the array when i plug it in only detects the device as 2TB as well. (so, it could easily be a limitation of that hardware driver, although i couldn't find any specification for that limitation when i googled for it). i should say, although i dread the possible suggestions that may arise from admitting it, that the array also supports FireWire and SATA connections. (we are STRONGLY inclined to wanting to use the array as USB, as our primary concern is easy portability and not speed) the RAID array is the DatOptic eRAID, with 5 750GB disks in a RAID-5 array. the array itself seemed to have no problem creating the ~3TB volume, but it does not detect as that size when i hook it up. here are the relevant kernel logs: SCSI subsystem initialized Initializing USB Mass Storage driver... scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices Vendor: USB 2.0 Model: Storage Device Rev: 0111 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 USB Mass Storage device found at 3 usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage USB Mass Storage support registered. Is anyone else having trouble getting some RPMs from vault? When I navigate to http://vault.centos.org/debuginfo/5/i386/ ...and try to click on (e.g.) kernel-PAE-debuginfo-2.6.18-8.1.3.el5.i686.rpm I get 404 errors (The requested URL /debuginfo/5/i386/kernel-PAE-debuginfo-2.6.18 -8.1.3.el5.i686.rpm was not found on this server). But then if I wait a while and try again, maybe I get it. Is anyone else seeing this? Thanks. Dave Thompson UW-Madison

To be honest, I never thought about making it HTML. You're right. That wouldn't be a bad idea. I have no problem with doing that if I can find a way to do it without breaking the formatting too badly. I don't know what the CentOS wiki specifically can or cannot do. I know what my experience is with wiki's thus far. Nobody has talked to me about this one tiny bit. They have just said, "You should do this and you should do that." Hi, 1) When I'm doing a server install as well as a desktop install, I always start from a minimal install, then add components as needed. Now I noticed that on a minimal system (no X11, no GNOME), when doing either 'halt' or 'shutdown -h now', the machine halts... but doesn't switch off the power. The user has to do it manually. (I vaguely remember that on older Slackware versions, one had to manually load the apm module). On the other hand, once I install a graphical environment ('yum grouinstall "X Window System"', 'yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"'), shutting down the machine also shuts down the power. Q: how can I switch off the power on a machine with just a basic install? 2) When installing a GNOME environment, there's a sort of graphical system update notifier daemon in the system tray, which occasionally tells me "There are 3 updates available" or something. How can I deactivate this thing? I'm meant to install this in our public libraries, and I want the average user - who barely knows how to handle a mouse, left alone system updates - to be confronted as little as possible to gory system details. Q: how can I turn the system update notifier off... or even uninstall it (since I manage the system via rpm and yum on the commandline)? Cheers, Niki Kovacs

kernel panic on Tyan Mobo's with CentOS 4

We've had a spate of these lately - about 3 or 4 boxes. I have a feeling we just got a bad run of motherboards, but thought I'd try to get some feedback. These are servers running with the Tyan Thunder K8SD (dual core AMD's, S2882 model). They have three onboard NIC's, two Broadcom gig NIC's BCM5704C's and an Intel 82551QM which is a 10/100 board. We use the Broadcom NIC's in this case with the tg3 driver. The kernel panics happen somewhat at random, though most frequently seen when scp'ing a large number of files (after a couple gigs they'll crash pretty reliably). Last night we had a box go down under very little load. I couldn't copy and paste from the console or scroll up - the one thing I got that seems relevant is the following: RIP <ffffffffa0092774> {:tg3:tg3_poll+177{ RSP <ffffffff8045a878> The tg3 bit is why I suspect something with the network ports. Has anyone run into this? What's the best way to track this down - is there a setting where I can save a core file, or do I just need to hook up a terminal and leave it on 24-7? core 2 duo motherboards and centos 4

from my googling around, it doesn't look there is a single motherboard that supports core 2 duo and works without patches or tweaks. is that true? the main thing we want is: core 2 duo support 4g of 800mhz (or better) ram sata gig ether with pxe boot we can live without pata or usb for a while. we've tried intel 965 and asus p5b based boards with various levels of ease of install, but all required some kind of driver update, which just isn't acceptable to us. well, i guess it could be acceptable if it could be built in to a pxe boot setup, but so far i haven't found any docs to even let me understand how hard/easy that might be. does v5 support any of these boards better?

virt-install and kickstart

Has anyone successfully used a kickstart file in tandem with the "virt-install" command? I can get a generic install to begin if I omit the "-x" flag and the kickstart parameters? error in kickstart file for raid1 setup

Hello, I'm trying to do a kickstart install of centos5. I'm pulling it off a network server and i'm getting an error, in the parsing of the file. It refers to line 31, i'm not going to show the complete file, but here is the indicated line: raid swap --fstype swap --level=RAID1 raid.4 raid.7 and the raid lines: part raid.7 --size=512 --ondisk=hdb part raid.4 --size=512 --ondisk=hda My parse error message is: "option --device is required" The raid lines indicate which drive to work on, i'm not seeing the issue. how to upgrade Centos 5 correctly?

Hi, I've just turned from Fedora Core to Centos 5, And would like to know the 'official' way/mechanism to upgrade a bunch of Centos 5 machines. My basic situation is: hundred of machines will be installed with Centos 5.0 by means of kickstart. and then the machines will always uses Centos 5.0 kickstart images for initial installation, not Centos 5.1, Centos 5.2, etc. So my questions are: 1, If the above possible? Since I take lot effort to have hacked Centos 5.0 images to make it work for my mixed environment, and I don't like to do the same work every three months. 2, Based on Centos 5.0 initial installation, can I upgrade the Centos 5.0 machines to Centos 5.1 level, 5.2 level, and so on, by means of continuous online upgrade but not reinstallation, right? 3, For continuous online upgrade, which repositories should I download and keep updated daily? If the extras/ and updates/ are enough? Or I have to download addons/ centosplus/ fasttrack/ as well, or even isoes/ and os/? 4, I've changed file /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo to use only os/ and updates/ repositories. and when it is needed, I manually pull packages from other Centos 5 repositories. Is this the 'official' way? or not? I mean, should I better include repositories like 'centosplus/'? Problem Rsyncing to mirrors for yum repo

Hi There, I run my own yum repo and have started seeing this error on the 4.5 repo rsync: opendir "4.5/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/.~tmp~" (in CentOS) failed: Permission denied (13) This is to do with the upstream rysnc server, I have tried several different rsync servers and each chokes on this .~tmp~ directory. If I remove it, it copies again on next rsync and thereafter chokes as above. Any ideas? I wondered if it was mechanism applied to stop further sync's from the repo as 4.5 is now "old hat" (no pun intended :-) ) Regards Pete

Documentation is supposed to be readily available, that's the point of it, at least from my perspective, no matter what the license or stipulations of the content are. Although you can pick out a license for your material that would cover protecting the interests you have expressed, yet at the same time allowing others to share in your material. One of the Creative Commons license, or another, would do the trick. That said, do you not have a place to host the document then? It seems that if you've gone to that much trouble to write something, then perhaps you just need a spot somewhere to host the document? ---------------------------------------- Currently I have a domain, yes, however my bandwidth is rather limited. By cost, not by speed. I don't feel like incurring hundreds of dollars in usage fees to post this on my domain. Licensing is good and fine, except for the fact that once you post something on a wiki, in most cases, anyone that comes along can freely add to and modify the content of what you've posted. This happens on Wikipedia quite frequently. This doesn't cover the "It's your fault because you wrote the document" blame that gets lumped on you when something goes wrong from a change that someone else made. The person who's name is on the document is the one that is going to get his or her neck wrung by the pissed off person. I've had it happen in the past. I don't care to repeat it. I really don't like lawyers sending me letters because of stupidity like that. I originally chose the method that I use for disseminating it because, to be honest, I don't really see that there is enough interest in it to invest the time or money into something larger. I have, however, considered asking the admins of the IEEE Computer Society, LOPSA, or AZSAGE if I could post it on their sites when I renew my memberships. Modules from a newer kernel with older kernel?

Is it possible to use driver modules from Fedora 7 with CentOS 5? That is to say, modules from a kernel version 2.6.21 with a kernel version 2.6.18. I would like to try libata.ko, ata_piix.ko and some other with the kernel I am using with CentOS 5. Will it be safe? Thank you!

It's the type of thing that makes other people uncomfortable. How to set up maxium masseage size per user basic

Hi All, I am runnig sendmail 8.13.8 with MailScanner-4.58.9-1 on CentOS 5. I want to setup a rule which filters message sizes. Below is the situation. I have 20 users. They currently have full freedom to send and recive mails. No message size checking is done. Now I want to limit message size per user basic. Let's say that 5 users can only send mails up to 7 MB and they can recieve up to 5 MB. 10 users can only send mails up to 10 MB and they can recieve up to 7 MB. and the remaining 5 users can only send mails up to 2MB and they can recieve up to 3 MB How to set a rule like this. In Mailscanner, There is a file called max.message.size.rules It is given below. I wrote a rule. Your snippy comment just shows EXACTLY what I am talking about. I also know, for a fact, that a large percentage of the people that read a wiki ignore that when something goes wrong and go straight to the source. I've seen it far too many times. I've seen the "Well, your information is wrong. You said this." "No I didn't." "Yes you did. Look at your wiki." "No I didn't. Look at the revision history. Someone else did." "It's your posting, you're responsible, so it's your fault and your information is wrong." You might be surprised how few people even care who said what. They hold the original author responsible. No thanks. I don't need that drama. This started out as a project solely for my own use. Nothing more and nothing less. It morphed to what it is today because I didn't see anything like it out on the 'Net at the time. At the end of the day, it has my name on it, so it's my heartburn if someone marks it up and it's wrong. If people don't want it because of my chosen distribution method, that's fine by me. Hi, there are three 'extra' directories under /lib/modules/<kernel>/ directories for each kernel version. Any one can explain what is the real functions for these three directories, and how to use them correctly? I found a document talks a little about it at http://linux.dell.com/files/presentations/Red_Hat_Summit_May_2006/Driver_Up…, but would like to know more real alive examples to see how I can really use the kernel driver update mechanism. Error on sound files with totem removed

I decided to go ahead and remove totem (don't much care for it anyway), and when I double-click a sound file in nautilus, it runs mplayer to play the file, but I also get an error window (from mplayer) that says "[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy" but it is playing the sound file just fine. I can close the error window and everything works; if I close mplayer instead, both mplayer and the error window disappear. NFS v4

Hello all, Do you guys use NFS v4 in production? Is the Linux implementation ready enough? The feeling I'm getting by looking at RH doc and other web sites is that v4 was added in a hurry and is not mainstream yet. CentOS 5 problem with 2xRocketRaid 2220

Hi! I have an supermicro storage server http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/3U/932/SC932T-R760.cfm with two RocketRaid 2220. my problem is that at install a looong time is spent on detecting some ataxx in order to end in ATA[0-15].00 : Failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4) for each channel from 16 it can take some 15-20 s. the same happens at boot time (which can take some 4-5 min). Fedora Directory Authentication on CentOS 5

Hi, I am trying to set up a Fedora Directory server for centralised authentication. I configure the directory server, add a user called (via the Java GUI) test and then, using system-config-authentication, enable LDAP on both tabs. I then try to log-in using the test account I set up on the directory, but I get an error message in /var/log/messages: May 30 16:28:27 ds1 sshd(pam_unix)[4445]: check pass; user unknown May 30 16:28:27 ds1 sshd(pam_unix)[4445]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=localhost.localdomain which seems to indicate that it cannot find the user in the directory. CentOS 5 Issues Booting Under VMWare

Hi, VMWare has been a great tool for me to experiment with CentOS 3 and CentOS 4. However, I'm running into issues with CentOS 5. First, it is *extremely* slow to boot (as in it takes over an hour to boot CentOS 5 on a machine that boots CentOS 3 & 4 in less than one minute). Then, after an hour of slowly watching the messages go by on the console and the CPU of the host machine pegged at 100%, I get this error: VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) NOT_REACHED F(562):1742 A log file is available in ... I have done a "minimal install" of CentOS 5 (all checkboxes in the category/task selection screen are unchecked -- so to X-Windows involved) and the virtual machine has 750MB of RAM. I'm using VMWare Workstation 4.5 and the host OS is Windows XP Pro. I have not been able to install the VMWare tool since I can't get it to finish booting. Has anyone else run into this? I have seen some discussion on the list about VMWare and CentOS 5, but nothing that seemed to match what I'm running into. Thanks, Kennedy

CentOS 4.5 FTP install

I'm having trouble getting CentOS 4.5 to install via FTP. I have a local FTP server with a mirror of 4/os/i386. I boot from the first CentOS 4.5 CD and enter 'linux askmethod'. I choose the FTP installation method and DHCP for the IP configuration. At the FTP Setup screen I enter the IP address of my server and the path of the i386 directory. Selecting OK there takes me to the CD Found screen that asks if I want to perform a media test. Skipping the media test takes me back to the FTP Setup screen. (Performing the media test shows that my CD is OK, and then takes me back to the FTP Setup screen.) All I can do now is bounce between the FTP Setup and CD Found screens. My FTP server log shows an attempt to fetch CentOS/base/product.img, which doesn't exist. Any idea what's going on here? Ron

CentOS Based Linux Firewall Document

I know that some of you from the list have asked me in the past for a copy of my CentOS based Linux Firewall document. There are also those that have no clue what I am talking about. This is for the former group... There is a new version of my document out. It's changed quite a bit since the last person asked me for it. Some of the changes are: * Updated the scripts in the Useful Shell Scripts section. * Changed the document format to reflect more of a professional document. * Added High Availability. * Many other small items. There is a complete changelog "built in" in the document, so you can compare it to the version that you already have to see what's changed. Error on CentOS 5

I just installed CentOS 5 on a computer. On boot, I get the a error message, related to 2 SATA disks. These errors did NOT appear on version 4.4 with the EXACT same hardware. Could someone please tell me what these error are and if there is some known way to prevent them? x display issue

Hello, I've got a new Centos5 install and got x installed with gnome on it. The problem is the display looks awful and keeps flickering. It failed the monitor probe and doesn't have horizontal and vertical refresh rates in the xorg.conf file. I believe this is part or all of the issue, i took it down to 8-bitt color and 800x600 resolution, that didn't help. The video card is an sis 741/760 AGP integrated job, the monitor has no designation, except compaq. Does anyone know how i can find the values i need? Thanks. Dave.

Trouble connecting to CentOS 5.0 host sound device from Windows guest on VMWare Workstation 5.5.4

I am running VMWare Workstation 5.5.4 on a CentOS 5.0 host (2.6.18-8.1.4 kernel) and I have been haiving some trouble with my sound device on the Guest Windows XP SP2 OS. When I first had trouble under CentOS 4.4, WS 5.5.3, it was usually when the sound device on the host was actually busy. However, now I can't use the sound device at all - I keep getting this error: "Failed to open sound device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy Failed to connect virtual device sound." on EVERY attempt to connect to the CentOS native sound driver. I am running a few command windows, SeaMonkey and VW WS and nothing else. ps -ef reveals nothing about /dev/dsp and I'm not entirely sure where else to look. I had shut off the sound device (disconnected by default) because Windows likes to make noise and this routinely not only did not work, but it also kept interrupting everything I was doing with gnome windows announcing the above error. Now it just doesn't connect at all, no matter what the host is doing. Note: This is my work machine. At home I run VMWare Server 1.0.3 and only have this problem when the sound device is in fact busy (like I'm playing music or watching a video or something). HP SureStore 40x6e - Multiple LUN's problem on CentOS 4.4

This is one of those autoloaders where the tape drive and the library share a SCSI ID, but are on different LUN's - specifically the library should be on LUN 1. Apparently since so many devices like this are broken, recent kernels don't probe beyond the first LUN, so it's not detecting the library. I tried to add options scsi_mod max_scsi_luns=6 to modprobe.conf and regenerated initrd - no change. Tried adding max_luns=6 max_report_luns=6 to the kernel line in grub.conf, no change. I tried to manually add it by doing: echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 5 1" > /proc/scsi/scsi but again, no change. Any suggestions? Am I on the right track and just doing something wrong? I know recompiling the kernel is not the best thing, but not sure what to do here. Centos 5 problems on Shuttle XPC

Hi, does somebody else experience booting problems after normal installation on SD32G2 based Shuttle systems. A CentOS 5.0 installation can be performed without any problems but after the first reboot the systems are just stopping the boot process after the grub is searching for the kernel. The last line is some- thing like: [ Linux-initrd @ 0x37db8000, 0x237858 bytes]. We tried already the newest update of the CentOS 5 kernel, the newest centosplus kernel and also FC6 kernel with always the same result. No error message, nothing! Unfortunately we have 15 machines of this type which should be installed with Linux ASAP (and no, I was not asked when somebody else has bought these machines). mime-type change?

I have a recently (last Friday) updated CentOS 4.5 desktop running OOo 2.2 that, since this morning, displays OpenOffice .odt files as application:x-java-archives and has replaced the open office icon on my desktop with the java icon for these files. I have looked in both: /usr/share/mime-info/gnome-vfs.mime and /usr/share/mime-info/file-roller.mime And cannot see any reference to OpenOffice v2 document types at all, or any relation between x-java-archives and odt extensions. xen - 4 concurrent virtual DomU limitation - how to increae this? (centos 5 x86_64)

Is there a switch or config setting somewhere that would allow me to start up more than the default 4 xen DomU instances? I am finding that the CentOS 5 (x86_64) installation only allows me to start up 4 virtual machines at a time. (It is definetly not a lack of cpu resources, memory or disk space.) monitor software does not find Belkin UPS

I have upgraded to CentOS5 on our computers. I had been using Mandriva 2006. The problem I am having is that the networkupstools (nut-2.0.4.tar.gz) does not find the UPS device. However, when I had Mandriva 2006 on the same hardware it worked. The device manager on CentOS does show the UPS device. The settings I used in the ups.conf file are: driver = newhidups port = auto Using the same version of nut with the same config files on CentOS5, I get the following output from 'upsdrvctl': Network UPS Tools - UPS driver controller 2.0.4 Network UPS Tools: New USB/HID UPS driver 0.28 (2.0.4) No matching USB/HID UPS found Driver failed to start (exit status=1) The following libusb files are installed: libusb-0.1.12-5.1 libusb-devel-0.1.12-5.1 Using ./configure --with-user=ups the lines for libusb show: checking for libusb cflags... checking for libusb libs... -lusb I posted this problem to the mailing list for the nut software. The conclusion is that the nut software is setup correctly. I also downloaded and installed the latest version (nut-2.0.5.tar.gz) and got the same result. All UPSs are Belkin F6H375-USB. I have searched the internet and found no other solutions. Since the software works under Mandriva 2006, I would presume that there is a package that is installed by default on Mandriva that is not installed by default on CentOS or that a config file is setup differently. Any help will be appreciated, David

General protection error

G'morning, all Over the last few months I've had a few instances of log lines of the following type on a handful of servers: nscd[9301] general protection rip:2a9578dea0 rsp:405f1368 error:0 As far as I've been able to figure out, this is the kernel warning me that nscd has tried to write outside of its allocated memory. Since the current nscd is started at the exact same time as the log message, I suspect that the kernel killed the process and it was automatically restarted by our automatic host management system. This has happened to different processes than nscd, and the servers where I've seen it run CentOS 4.4 or 4.1, with kernel versions 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp, 2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp or 2.6.9-11.106.unsupportedsmp. I've not been able to find much relevant regarding what can be done about this, but I suspect that the general answer is "this is a bug in the application". If someone knows of any condition where this is more likely to appear than others, or any other debugging hints, I'd be happy to know about it. -- Haakon Gjersvik Eriksen -- Basefarm AS

cups foomatic error centos 5....

I am trying to setup a local printer that I have working in centos4.4 on centos 5, this is a server install no X. I was able to get the cups webpage up and it sees the printer I configured it up but when I try to print to it i get the following error: "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed", I've searched and searched but can't find anything that helps. I would like to try to install it outside of cups but it appears they only have a GUI to add a printer. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Planning to buy a new colour MFD or a Mono MFD & a Colour printer, for small buisiness office use. Could someone give feedback on HP Laserjet MFD M3027x and Laserjet 2840? Do all functions provided by the printers work on Linux? Any kinks? Do Network Fax features of M3027x work on linux? Any problems in scanning & saving to disk or rather, is there any gui for scanning etc. & especially checking ink levels other maintainence tasks? I use Fedora 6 and CentOS 4/5. I am trying to run Excel 2000 with wine-0.9.37. I need excel for some graphics that look terrible in OO. If I run: $ wine excel.exe I get: wine: could not load L"c:\\windows\\system32\\excel.exe": Module not found If I run: $wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Microsoft\ Office/Office/excel.exe Nothing happen, only the wineserver shows up in the system monitor. Very early PANIC during boot

I'm in the process of updating all my CentOS systems from 4.4 to 4.5. One of the systems is spewing out the following error during the reboot: INIT: version 2.85 booting INIT: PANIC: segmentation violation at 0x420! sleeping for 30 seconds This happens so early in the boot I have no idea what I can do to debug this. I suspect it is a hardware problem and not something caused by the "yum update", but I thought I'd mention it here in case anyone else has any ideas. Update: I originally sent this message out yesterday, but my email client used the wrong account so it didn't get posted to the list. I've since re-imaged this system (thank you Red Hat for Kickstart), but I am still curious what could have possibly caused this and any debugging techniques that can be used in this situation. On a vaguely related note, I also have pondered the following in the past; if you observe a system booting, you'll see all the "[OK]" and "[FAILED]" messages. Is there a log somewhere where you can check later on which services were started and which passed or failed? Thanks, Alfred

Hi all, My USB mouse is dying on centos 5. Boots up fine, runs for a little while - 5 minutes perhaps then dies. 4.5 ALB Bonding Hang on Shutdown

Since I upgraded from 4.4 to 4.5 my system which has 2 sets of ALB bonded interfaces hangs on shutdown while doing an ifdown on these interfaces. Has anyone else seen this issue with 4.5 and bonding? Although I know the basics about getting and installing web and mail server ssl certs, I haven't had to "purchase" and do it "myself" for some time. i always had someone else dealing with it. I am wondering what you folks on the list are using on your centos web and mail servers :-) Are you making your own or are you purchasing them from godaddy, thawte, geotrust, verisign, others? What is the best and the least expensive implementation that most browsers and other clients are happy with without phone calls to admins or the NOC or other problems? Hi, I have CentOS 5 with the XFCE-4.4 window manager installed. (BTW, I've tried many XFCE-centered distros before, and CentOS offers by far the cleanest implementation). Two questions for that. 1) I've seen various HOWTO's about how to display Samba shares with the Thunar file manager. Did anyone manage to do this with CentOS? 2) Is there some HOWTO about configuring that nice 3D-desktop? I have an older NVidia card, a GeForce2. I wonder if this is enough. Hi, I attached a mobile phone (its name I-MATE SMART PHONE) to a box running CentOS 5 by using a usb cable which came with that phone. Now, it shows /dev/ttyUSB0 Now I want to send a sms to my friends. I installed gammu. Pls see below for installed rpm. [root@mailgw ~]# rpm -qa |grep gammu gammu-1.11.0-1.el5.rf here's my /etc/gammurc file. gmime-2.1.19 and mime decoding

Everyone, Please forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask this question, but would sure appreciate some direction if this list is the wrong place. Looks like Fedora 5 and 6 have gmime-2.1.19 as part of the distribution, but it is not present within CentOS 5 or with the extra repositories I would like to use some of the tools in this package to decode some mime e-mail attachments on a CentOS 5 system. If you can help me find gmime-2.1.19 for CentOS 5 or other ways to decode mime attachments I would appreciate your help. Thanks, Greg Ennis

centos 5 usb mouse failures

I have a box that ran perfectly under 4.4. gigabyte motherboard, AM2 4200+ systems. 1 GIG RAM. I installed Centos 5 on the same box. I now see the log entries below and my USB mouse stops working. What to do? PPS Kit - Nanosecond timekeeping patches?

SCSI device not detected after 4.5 update

After updating to Centos 4.5, I found that one of the LUNs on an external SCSI array wasn't being detected. If I add the device manually after boot echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 1 1" > /proc/scsi/scsi it is detected. I can then use the LVM tools to activate it and then mount the LV on the device. It doesn't seem to be kernel related as I rebooted into a 4.4 kernel and the same thing happened. There's no error message I can see at boot, it just doesn't see the device. It's using a QLogic HBA but with the upstream module, not the out-of-tree QLogic one. It worked fine under 4.4. I suspect changes to dmsetup and/or multipath. Has anyone else seen something similar?
