Strange behavior in X, esp. VMWare Windows

Last Thursday, for some reason (possibly a power failure), my work desktop had a different video configuration than when I left Wednesday evening. I have two 17" flat panels configured as a two-head wide (side-by-side) single display. When I arrived on Thu, I had two individual desktops instead, the resolution was down to 800x600, and so on. The monitor type had been reset to generic 800x600, and the vido card was unknown. (This was not true before.) After a lot of fooling around with the xorg.conf file, I finally got it back to where it should be, for the most part. My current xorg.conf is included below. The problem is that I typically run certain apps on the right screen, including seamonkey and Windows under VMWare workstation, and since the new configuration came in, the mouse cursor is not where it should be. Items light up when I run the mouse over them, but a little below and to the right of the tip of the pointer. It is only a slight dislocation, but significantly worse in the Windows on VMWare, and it is really annoying when I have to mis-aim the cursor to hit certain selections (check boxes, bullets, etc.). Can anyone explain this? Hello all. Does anyone know how to get bluetooth working on CentOS 5? I can't pair any device. Things work perfectly on CentOS 4. Hi I just joined I have a serer who's purpose life is to be a fileserver/print server right now it is running windows 98 because it is an older computer look at an alternate os such as this will this allow windows based machines to talk to it save files retrieve files and also how difficult is it to install.

The filesystem on /dev/sda1 does not at any time contain anything useful (it started out as just being an extended partition, and now is completely empty. At no time did it have any label set). I install centos 4.4 in a serveraltos9100, every thing was ok, but the watch´s time on the system is going very fast, the second goin very fast. The time in the bios setup is ok, the time go fine, but when I booting the centos 4.4 , the time is wrong, I repair with the command date, but minuts later all is crazy again Please I need help. CentOS 5 single DVD for i386 and x86_64

Hello, I'd like to announce a release of a CentOS 5 DVD image, with i386 and x86_64 installations. This is an independent work, so please don't bother CentOS lists with bugs related to the installer only. Summary of changes: * i686 and x86_64 install from a single dvd (automatic detection on boot) * updates as of 2007-04-26 * no kdelibs-api-docs, openoffice.org, tetex-doc and most *-javadoc sha1sum: 63885249695c60a87443e304212d6cf9af678165 centos5_32and64.iso md5sum: 0db291c3e4f7dc4fb4e6ea052b77e95d centos5_32and64.iso torrent: ftp://ftp.gil.di.uminho.pt/pub/users/strange/centos/c5_32+64.torrent iso: ftp://ftp.gil.di.uminho.pt/pub/users/strange/centos/centos5_32and64.iso Detailed changes: * All rpms are the originals from CentOS 5. However, the *.i386.rpm and *.noarch.rpm for the x86_64 are the ones from the i386 DVD, not from the x86_64, as the contents are the same and the rpm headers differ only on the Build Date and/or Signature. * each install (x86_64 or i386) only has knowledge of rpms originally in their DVDs, so x86_64 installs won't be bloated with more i386 packages than the originals. * Some packages are missing. Installed CentOS 5 today, question about an error I'm getting

So I did a fresh install today. Decided to go ahead and upgrade. Everything seems okay save for three problems. #1 - I get a message during boot saying that an Intel microcode update didn't work. Something about not being able to find /proc/microcode. #2 - I can't use the Firefox extension HTML Parser. Anyone use this. #3 - Off and on GDM crashes and I get dropped into a prompt. Any ideas? FreeNX authenticates but no desktop on centos 5 ??

Hi all, I am new to CentOS and freeNX -- both look really awesome, a huge thanks to all the people making them happen. I am having a problem with freenx that appears to be specific to centos 5. my client authenticates but then no desktop comes up. however, when I connect to a similar machine running centos 4.4, I authenticate and the gnome desktop just pops up sweet as can be. I also have a vnc connection to my centos 5 workstation working, and can get a gnome desktop through vnc, and direct X11 connections are fine. the two nxserver machines have stable IP addresses, I have root access. the nxclient machine is a mac G4 PPC (which presumably makes no difference at all), with very recent download of the mac OS X client from nomachine. I followed the instructions for setting up freenx on centos 4.4 found here: http://linuxgazette.net/135/knaggs.html and it worked perfectly the first time I tried. the key steps were wget http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/extras/i386/RPMS/nx-1.5.0-1.centos4.i386.… wget http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/extras/i386/RPMS/freenx-0.5.0-10.c4.noarc… sudo rpm -Uvh nx-1.5.0-1.centos4.i386.rpm sudo rpm -Uvh freenx-0.5.0-10.c4.noarch.rpm plus a quick copy-paste of the client dsa key, and nxserver --adduser <me> For CentOS 5, I tried the yum-based instructions found at http://wiki.centos.org/FreeNX (which says that freenx only works with centos 4, and the bottom of page says "FreeNX (last edited 2007-02-08 23:38:36 by JohnnyHughes )" -- hopefully its just the wiki is out of date) I also tried adapting the above steps to use the centos 5 packages from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/extras/i386/RPMS/ freenx-0.5.0-13.el5.centos.i386.rpm 08-Apr-2007 11:00 66K nx-2.1.0-6.el5.centos.i386.rpm 08-Apr-2007 11:00 2.9M either way, I get authenticated but no desktop comes up in the X11 window on the client machine. (just to be explicit: using exactly the same client I do get a desktop on the centos 4.4 machine). I saw a post today saying that freenx is supposed to work exactly the same on CentOS 5 as per instructions for 4. hmmm. I basically followed the instructions posted in http://linux.web.psi.ch/livecd/usbdisk.html and use the CentOS Live CD iso. I used a 2G Lexar FireFly (1G partition formatted via FAT for the LiveCD and 1G /home via ext3). If I need to transfer files, I will copy them to the FAT partition. I hope this helps! Mark

Hi folks. I'm posting this to both the Fedora as well as the CentOS lists in hopes that somewhere, someone can help me figure out what's going on. I have a dual Xeon 3GHz server that's performing rather slow when it comes to disk activities. The machine is configured with a single 160 GiB OS drive (with CentOS 5.0) and 4x500 GiB drives setup in a RAID-5 configuration. All drives are setup for 3.0 GiB SATA link, and the motherboard also supports that. If I try to delete the folder afterwards (rm -rf FOLDER) it takes a few seconds to do so, however if I delete the CONTENTS of the folder, it does so within a fraction of a second (but then 'sync' takes a few seconds to catch up.) That same folder that I'm copying contains 452 jpeg files in it, ranging from 2.5 to 6.2 MiB. Doing some image processing on them is where it takes a long time. At the moment I'm doing a simple thumbnail creation with the ImageMagick suite (convert FILE -thumbnail "200x200>' `basename FILE .jpg`.th.jpg) and it takes upwards of 8 minutes to complete. The whole time it's running, 'top' reports the server load as follows: load average: 1.06, 1.00, 0.81 And the CPU usage is around 9%. Interestingly, if I run the same command and have it create .png instead, it takes longer, but I won't go there just yet. My question is, is this the expected performance on something like this, or should I be able to get better results? Is there something I should or could do to speed up disk based processes? Or is this something where it's more memory intensive and I need to look at adding more (right now it has 2 GiB of memory.) This problem is causing one of our web sites to time out because it's trying to process hundreds of image files and generate thumbnails, and it's taking forever to do that. So I'm starting at the bottom of the pile here, hardware. I would like to set up CentOS on 4 SATA hard drives that I would like to configure in RAID10. I read somewhere that Raid10 support is in the latest kernel, but I can't seem to get anaconda to let me create it. I only see raid 0, 1, 5, and 6. Even when I tried to set up raid5 or raid1, it would not let me put the /boot partition on it, and I though that this was now possible. Is it possible for me to set up the configuration I'm looking for? Russ

I have just built cinelerra on CentOS 5 x86_64 and thought I should share my notes here for people who need it but cannot wait for the package to become available on rpmforge/dag. - Install the src.rpm for FC6 - Edit the .spec file and change the line BuildRequires: OpenEXR-devel to BuildRequires: openexr-devel - Create a symlink: ln -s /usr/include/OpenEXR /usr/include/openexr - Run rpmbuild You need to have all devel packages required. The main problem I encountered was that the FC6 version wants the OpenEXR package and the one I could find for CentOS was all in lowercase. Then during the compilation, it refers to /usr/include/OpenEXR thus the symlink. I don't know the exact consequences this modification would bring about. For now, the rebuilt rpm installed on my system without a hitch and the program runs well. Akemi

Hi all, I am using centos 5. I need the screen to always be on. I have gone into System -> Preferences -> Screen saver and then I unchecked the "Activate screen saver when computer is IDLE" setting. I also edited the xorg.conf and commented out the dpms line. However, my screen is still going into some kind of screen saver. What else is there to disable? Thanks, Jerry

I connected to a machine running CentOS 5.0 x86_64 and issued a command: find / -name filename -print Now, this machine is not responding to a ping. I have a redhat 9 server I would like to migrate (install Centos on a new machine, and move the necessary files) to Centos 5. On the RH9 machine, I use LPRng for printing. This was mainly choosen because it makes it easy to control access to the printers using /etc/lpd.perms, something I never figured out how to do in cups. All printer queues are raw printers, the printer driver in Windows takes care of the rest. Anyone having success with LPRng on a newer RHEL/Centos? CentOS 4.4 - added disk prevents system from booting past initrd

Hi people, I ran into one of these silly issues I'd like to share as I think the reason behind it may be a flaw in the current initrds. The setup; Dual-Xeon Intel-chipset motherboard. SATA-disk attached to ICH, onboard Adaptec SCSI-controller. Installed system, updated packages, no problems. Basic, non-LVM partition setup - OS-disk is /dev/sda, single filesystem-partition /dev/sda1 is labeled LABEL=/, and fstab uses the label to access the filesystem. I now add a SCSI-disk (previously used) to the onboard SCSI-controller, and the fun starts. The onboard controller is identified as scsi0 and scsi1, the SATA-disk sits on scsi2. SCSI-disk is thus /dev/sda, and SATA-disk becomes /dev/sdb. This should not be a problem as the fstab refers to the partition by label and not device name. And then disaster! While booting, the system issues 'Checking root filesystem' (I'm not 100% sure about the output here), and craps out on a badly broken /dev/sda1. On the SCSI-disk, /dev/sda1 is an extended partition, with /dev/sda5 being the partition that holds the filesystem. Thus fsck'ing /dev/sda1 does not bring any useful. But why? Why does the initrd insist on fsck'in /dev/sda1, when it should check LABEL=/? Is there something I'm not getting here? -S -- Simen Thoresen, Dolphin ICS Systems Administration and Wulfkit Support

Does anyone know how to diagnose the error "Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address xxxxxx"? I got this error (followed by a panic and a crash) on a server running CentOS 4.4 with the 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp kernel. The machine is based on an Intel 975XBX2 motherboard (975X chipset). I have built several of these and they have been extremely stable. This one is an Asterisk PBX. It was up for over a month before this crash. installing raid1 via serial terminal during install

Hello, I'm wanting to install centos via serial terminal on to a box without monitor. It will be administered remotely via ssh. I've got two disks in it and would like to use raid1 with this system, but i'd like to get this going preferably during or immediately after the install. My problem as i see it is installing grub on to both hard disks, you have to get a shell window during the install for that otherwise the box won't boot. Does anyone have this working? Thanks. Dave.

Now, this is an embarrassing situation. I spoke too soon. After installing CentOS 5, I left this particular system unpatched *on purpose* so that I can observe the kernel oops caused by the known cifs bug. Because the system crash did not occur for a few days, I had forgotten about it. Apparently, the find command triggered the crash. Now that the system is proven unstable, I will go ahead and install the patched cifs.ko provided by Johnny. Sorry for the noise, but I needed to confirm that the patch really works. Akemi

Issues with r8169 gige on boot.

Hi all, I've recently upgraded a system from CentOS 4.4 to CentOS5, and now when the system boots, the r8169 ethernet card doesn't come up. After the boot sequence, if I type "ifup eth1 | ifup eth1.10 | ifup eth1.203" then the adapter starts up ok. It seems to be something with the boot sequence it loads the ethernet adapters a different way around (ie 4.4 eth0 is now eth1 and eth1 is now eth0). Is there a way to revert this? Strange content in the kernel dmesg traces

I am experimenting with the kernel (as some of you may know), and I have added a whole slew of traces in some relatively sensitive code in the lower levels of the page cache and i/o functions. Most of this tracing not only works but is highly revealing as to what the kernel is doing and why. However, I am now getting this odd content in the trace log (dmesg), and I cannot figure out what it is or why it is there. recording sound: how 2 control recording level?

Hi gang! I'm trying to record (to .wav files) sound coming in on the line input of my sound card (in this case, output of a tape deck). For LISTENING purposes, I can control the level with the Gnome Mixer. However, the RECORDING level is not affected by the mixer. As a result, the recorded audio is badly clipped and horribly distorted. I don't understand enough about how this stuff works to have a clue how to troubleshoot this problem. Can someone offer helpful advice? I'm installing CentOS 4.4 64-bit Enterprise on a Dell Dimension with and AMD dual core 3800+. When it starts to load eth0 it hangs. I have not found a way to break out of it. Or how to boot at run level 0. So newby Question 1 how do I get it to boot without loading eth0 so I can make changes? Question 2 what is a likely problem and fix. Problems with RAID0 array on new server

Hello, i recently installed Centos 5 on a new server with a single scsii disk. After the installation, i added 2 additional disks that were once the components of a raid0 array on another server. I get some errors and am unable to start the array the following is an extract from dmesg output: md: Autodetecting RAID arrays. md: could not open unknown-block(8,17). md: could not open unknown-block(8,33). i then examined each disk in fdisk Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 17501 17921008 fd Linux raid autodetect Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 17501 17921008 fd Linux raid autodetect I tried to re-create the array and get this: mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 mdadm: chunk size defaults to 64K mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdb1: No such device or address mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdc1: No such device or address mdadm: create aborted yet obviously the devices are there. what else should i look at. putting the drives back in the old server, and the array comes up with all data intact. Hi all, I've just upgraded my home network to a Linksys SRW2024 (with lovely vlan trunking support!) and I'm trying to enable jumbo frames. When I try to set the MTU of an rtl8169 based network card (it's a Netgear RA311), it comes up with an error stating: # ifconfig eth1 mtu 9000 SIOCSIFMTU: Invalid argument The only options it will take are 1500 or below. unexpected mass closing of terminal windows

Hello, I apologize if this isn't quite the right spot to ask, but I did some googling on fc6, rhel5, centos5, terminal closings, etc and came up blank. Three times since I installed CentOS5 on this machine (11 days ago), I have had ***all my my terminal windows spontaneously exit***. For example: just now, I have a CD playing, firefox open with a few tabs, and emacs open. I also had ~5 terminal windows open, one for email and four for work. While typing an email on a remote machine in pine, *all* of my terminal windows exited. Just plain disappeared. Everything else, including the emacs copy started from one of those terminals, is running fine. It's a frustrating thing to see happen! Has anyone else experienced this? This is in the gnome desktop, x86-64 install, all the latest updates from yum. The machine is a nforce3 board with 1 gig of ram, Athlon64, sata drive, and NFS mounted home directories. Thanks, Brian

The kernel version is a dependency for the cluster suite (for centos4) package, which has been installed using yum (yum install cman gfs [...]). Where can I get the kernel source for this exact version? The only one which is offered to me by yum is version 2.6.9-42.0.10, which I could re-link of course with /usr/src/linux-2.6, but isn't there a nicer way? is asking thankfully Sebastian

Hello! I've successfully gotten the arcnet driver compiled and installed into a Centos kernel. Admittedly, with a lot of help. Currently, I'm using the following script to get arcnet up and running: cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.9/linux-2.6.9/drivers/net/arcnet insmod arcnet.ko insmod arc-rawmode.ko insmod com20020.ko insmod com20020-pci.ko node=3 device=arc0 timeout=3 backplane=0 clockp=0 clockm=0 insmod rfc1201.ko ifconfig arc0 up The raw-recv and raw-send examples now work after this, but only when run as root. Hello All, I'm trying to get the iSeries Access for Linux client (IBM 5250 emulator) working on a CentOS 4.4 system. The client is mostly working - it connects to the remote AS/400, the custom keymap I created is recognized, etc. The only problem is printing to a local printer. The docs for the client state that it reads the default printer environment variable to figure out which printer to print to on the local side. What's the default printer environment variable? $PRINTER? I'm lost on this one since I've never had to set it before. I know that I can create a ~/.lpoptions file and put the default printer in there, but that's not going to work with this IBM 5250 emulator. Any tips/help appreciated. network config files in centos 5 changing

What is happening in centos 5 with network config files??? I have a machine with 2 network cards. ifcfg-eth1 keeps changing to DHCP. All my static setup is gone. Why is it doing this? How can I stop it? I run "netconfig -d eth1" and re-setup my static information. I reboot and now I am back to DHCP. I have a gigabyte motherboard, nvidia chipset. forcedeth driver. eth0 is e1000. I installed 2.6.20.7 copied /boot/config{something} to .config make oldconfig make oldconfig make menuconfig - turned on drivers -> Sata -> nvidia make bzImage make modules make modules_install make install rebooted. Seems like the issue I had with forcedeth (nvidia) bad MAC address is gone. However, the iptables gives errors. Where in the menu tree do I enable what iptables needs??? I have a computer that I needed to put 2.6.21 on. Everything is working fine after recompile except when iptables is starting up it errors with iptables-restore: line 23 failed. Hi! I´m have some problems deploying OPENLDAP+SAMBA+PAM+NSSWITCH. When I restart the server with those services, the DBUS service crash. And when I try disable DBUS service on system start Avahi crashs too. Someone here have this problem? There´s a BUG on CentOS 5? Maybe PAM not talking with LDAP on startup? I can send some logfile and my system-auth setup. Hello, Maybe someone will run into the same problem, so here is how it works for me. I could not get work my wlan card (ralink rt61) with the driver from rt2x00.serialmonkey.com under CentOS 5 (2.6.18-8.1.1.el5). All drivers (beta and daily cvs) from this site freezes my system. So I get the driver from the Ralink support at http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Linux.html (RT2501PCI/mPCI/CB(RT2561/RT2661)). With this driver, my wlan card works very well (WPA2, AES). Xen guest and samba

Hello, I am new to this list, but having been using CentOS for sometime. I recently installed CentOS 5 on a test server to check out Xen. The installation was smooth had so far I have everything working except I cannot get samba to join our AD domain from the xen guest, using para-virtualization, I setup. I am out of ideas, and cannot find anyone having similar problems. I have tested my config files on the server itself (Dom0) and it joins fine. But on the guest it will not join. kinit works and I do get a ticket from kerberos. But when I try to join I get: # net ads join -U administrator administrator's password: Using short domain name -- ICN Failed to set servicePrincipalNames. Please ensure that the DNS domain of this server matches the AD domain, Or rejoin with using Domain Admin credentials. linux dd on CentOS 5 x86

Howdy, I had to use a driver disk today to install CentOS 5 on a Poweredge 1900 /w a 3ware 9650SE controller card. The only gotcha I noticed is that for some reason CentOS 5 will not read driver disk files off of a thumbdrive (usb key) when it is being emulated as auto, hard disk, or floppy disk. (it saw the thumb drive as SDA in all instances) however when I plugged in a USB floppy drive (the poweredge 1900 is sans floppy controller) it still saw the drive as SDA and it read the files off of the USB floppy disk. My question, I suppose is what is the difference between a floppy emulated SDA and a USB floppy SDA? Thanks, -Drew

Problem installing Windows under Xen CentOS 5

Hi, I'm having trouble installing Windows on a fully virtualized VM on CentOS 5. The installation hangs on the blue screen saying "Setup is starting Windows". The hardware is a dual processor dual core AMD Opteron 2218 with 8GB RAM and SATA disks, CentoOS 5 i386 will all patches applied. On the same machine I have successfully installed two VM's running CentOS 5, one paravirtualized and one with full virtualization. I have tried to install Windows 2003 server and Windows XP with the same result. The installation media are iso images of the Windows MSDN DVDs. When the installation hangs at the "Setup is starting Windows" screen the virt-manager shows 25% cpu utilization for the guest ( I think this represents 100% CPU usage for the guest as it has 1 vcpu assigned out the maximum 4 vcpus). I am running the virt-manager and the virtual machine console over ssh as dom0 has no X server installed. Has anyone seen this problem? Any suggestions? Regards, Radu

Error trying to mount NFS volume from kickstart in CentOS 5

The post section of the kickstart configuration file I have been using in CentOS4 looks like this: %post mount centosmirror:/var/www/html/ks /mnt /mnt/ks/post/post.sh > /root/post_install.log 2>&1 umount /mnt I tried to do my first CentOS 5 kickstart installation today using an identical post section, but the post install script did not run. After instrumenting the kickstart a bit, I found that the above mount command failed with the following error message: mount.nfs: Input/output error Not a very helpful error message -- any clues as to what is going on? It's a little tricky and time consuming to debug kickstart problems like these, so I thought I'd ask the list and hopefully save some time. If I execute that mount command after rebooting the system, it works just fine. Thanks, Alfred

We're running a mix of ext3 and xfs file systems on CentOS 4 workstations at our site. We have benefitted greatly from the increased performance and fast (crash recovery) reboot times that we get from xfs. We're currently running CentOS kernel 2.6.9-42.0.8.EL and xfs version 0.2-1. We have one host where we've got issues. It's a (very) busy imap server with external scsi hardware raid, dual Xeon CPUs, and 8GB of RAM (it runs the hugemem kernel). Twice now in the last few weeks we've seen it hang with the follow log message repeated many times in the logs at the time of the hang: XFS: possible memory allocation deadlock in kmem_alloc (mode:0x250) I see this error discussed in: http://oss.sgi.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=410 ...and I'm wondering if the fixes mentioned in that bug are present in the 0.2-1 centosplus xfs drivers, or if it could get included in an xfs update for CentOS 4. Hi thanks for the reply i am really grateful if you can tell me how to make FreeNX work like charm. I am really stuck with it, and after reinstalling the server is definitely pissing off my boss. Please help me thanks. =========================== Please let me review how my FreeNX was screwed up. After i fresh install my CentOS 5, I 'yum install freenx' and so if i am not wrong I actually install freenx 0.5.0-12 or something.... but i think ya shd be -12. Ok... so after i install freenx through yum. I follow what's on http://wiki.centos.org/FreeNX I --adduser and --passwd etc. Then copy the /etc/nxserver/client_id*.key over to my NX Client on Windows. Initially all works out. The NX session starts and i can do what i want over this remote session, and i proceed with updating of the critical updates for other apps from yum. The problem comes after i do this, right after the yum update. I choose to reboot my server. I reboot the server over the NX remote session. By going System -> Log Off -> Reboot. The NX Client's Window automatically closed (in quite a violent way with error msg). Then the server reboot. After the reboot, I try to reconnect to Server again using NX. I really do not know what's wrong. When i try to connect back locally at my server. The GNOME UI is gone! I am now left with only the console logon menu. This same problem happens everytime, even with CentOS 4.4 recently. Update Centos-4.4 to centos-5 spents a lot of time in "restorecon"

Hi, having running centOS-4.4 on a really fast machine (16 GB memory, 8 Opteron CPU's, SATA drives). Then making an update by using the Centos-5 CD's. The start was fast, but during update, the installer spents a very, very long wallclock time during selinx updating: for about 1/2 hour the updater runs in a restorecon/find sequence. And at the end, before the MBR is written, it spents again a long time in "install". Can somebody explain this? Centos 5 -- Bind not

Well, I just did my 2nd install. (Now doing the updates via yumex and stepping into the updates instead of risking doing it all at once.) I selected every bind related package, and then ran the BIND configuration GUI in System>Adminstration>Server Settings. Things seem to work. So I uninstalled and reinstalled on my new DNS server and it looks like I can proceed on the install.

Hi, I have a Pentium III PC with NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT on an AGP 8x and am running NVIDIA driver 9755 on CentOS 5.0 x86. What is the most efficient playback method for the various players, XVideo or OpenGL? RealPlayer has a "Use XVideo" tick box under the "Hardware" tab preselected, while MPlayer uses xv - X11/Xv, gl - X11(OpenGL) and other Video drivers. What is the most efficient between the two, given the configuration?

URGENT: Skip installation ix86 packages from kickstart on 64bit arch?

Hi, Has any one know how to skip ix86 packages from installation in Centos kickstart? Most of our machines have 64bit Intel/AMD CPUs, and it make non-sense to still keep 32bit compatibility. Even worse of i*86 packages is, when upgrade we have to recompile both ix86 version and x86_64 version to get an automatic yum upgrade. I know we could use 'exclude' option to exclude i*86 packages from yum calculation/upgrade; But, if this can be extended to kickstart? Centos5 installer hangs up with promise sata controller on board

Hi, curently running centos4.4 with a board having promise sata controller. If I try to update to centos-5, the installer hangs up. No problems under centos-4.4. Does somebody know a workaround for this problem? In the mailing list archives I found a similar report, but no solution. OS: CentOS 5 x86. Has anyone tried hibernation under CentOS 5 x86 on a *non-virtual* machine? I tried it on my PIII and it had some kind of hibernation/resume failure. The screen went standby during hibernation and resume, and I hardware reseted the system.

Hiding PCI devices from Dom0 on Centos5

I'm trying to hide my PRV-350 PCI card from Dom0 so that a DomU can see it. >From Dom0, the card reports as: [root@willamette ~]# lspci |grep 06:02 06:02.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC15 MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01) The ivtv driver isn't installed on Dom0. I have added the following to /etc/modprobe.conf on Dom0: options pciback hide=(0000:06:02.0) but the card still shows up. Is PCI backend/frontend support compiled in the Centos5 xen kernels? Centos 5 Reproducible Reboot

Guys, I've just setup 5.0 and can reproduce a crash/reboot every time. Details; x86_64 Install Using Xen Kernel System fully updated including Xen Kernel (latest 1.1 update) Intel Dual Core E6400 4gb RAM I've installed vmware server 1.0.2 from rpm. It has been configured and is ready to create new machines. I have successfully created a new machine but when I attempt to power-on the system resets. No panic information, just straight to the BIOS. I've searched bugzilla and there appears to be nothing related. I'll do some more testing tomorrow, I'll try without the Xen-ified kernel. Centos 5 -- X default resolution

Install did not recognize my LCD monitor, probably due to the old KVM. Anyway, I went to config monitor after install (logged in as root) and selected the monitor in my NOC where this box is going to live anyway. I then had to exit X and restart it for this selection to take. It this point the resolution was 1280x1024 which was unreadable. I changed it to 1024x768 which works well. However at bootup and for the login screen the resolution is still 1280x1024. How do I change this?

antivirus sniffer/scanner for networks

Is anyone aware of a package that can detect viri on the network & possibly alert when there are? Here is the scenario: Our network is utilized by guest users all the time, sometimes into the thousands. We see guests from all over with a variety of OSs & hardware, all of which, we have no control or say in that matter. I am looking for something that I can run in promiscuous mode and/or on a span port that will sniff for viri and then alert/log when it sees a virus. We can then track down the culprits' ip/mac and shut off the switch port he/she is connected to and then visit with the guest to help them clean their machine. Given the nature of our network and our guests' needs, an inline solution is not an option. Although, I recall that squid supports WCCP, I'm not sure that it would do what I am requesting. I also looked at snort+libclamav, but the info was inconclusive. We are a CentOs shop and I have a spare dual xeon box that I can use for the task. Thanks, Eric

As long as I'm still awake, I tried to install CentOS 5 (earlier) from a DVD I downloaded via bittorrent about a week or so ago. It boots fine, but once it starts to load the kernel (in graphics mode), it gets to the point where it announces the four i/o schedulers and then stops dead. No disk activity, no DVD activity, nada. Is there a known problem here and if so what, or is this a new one? Evolution problem - not sending/receiving any more

Not at all clear on what happened. I haven't downloaded my mail from gmail into Evolution for a couple of days, and today I changed my gmail password. Even though I told Evolution to forget my passwords and had to reenter them, I am unable to receive any email from the server. I get a quick "retrieving Pop summary" and then the window vanishes and nothing gets downloaded. When I try to send email, I get a window that says "Unable to authenticate to SMTP server" and a few other things. I have triple-checked the password (couldn't get here if I didn't know it), so what else could be the problem? Centos 5 where is rndc.conf and named.conf?

In /var/named/chroot/etc there is no rndc.conf or named.conf. Where are they? Webmin built a named.conf, but it is missing many of the 'default' entries. And it did not set up the symbolic link to /etc I am trying to follow instructions at: http://www.wains.be/index.php/2007/02/04/centos-chroot-dns-with-bind/

Saving digikam photos for update to Centos 5

I will be installing Centos 5 soon and would like to know how to save my digikam photos from centos 4.4 for inclusion in the centos 5 digikam version. I have a external usb 2.0 hard drive to save the messages on. I know how to savethe messages on the hard drive. Mike, I know if someone has root access to my server I'm dead!, but in this case a non-root user can take down your server if he just run just :(){ :|:& };: Ulimit -u get this: [israel@node1 ~]$ ulimit -u 3072 So, I change /etc/securitty/limit.conf and add this lines to limit to 100 process to users * soft nproc 100 * hard nproc 100 Now: [israel@node1 ~]$ ulimit -u 100 And a non-root user CAN NOT take down your server.. Help making gnokii (cvs version) rpm for CentOS 5

Hi, I'm trying to package gnokii (using FC6 SRPM as base). I can build it without problems, my problem is that I want to upgrade it from CVS version. I download the cvs version (from cvs, because "current" tar.gz appears to be broken) but ... ¿How can I convert this CVS version to a "peseudo release" to make a diff from 0.6.14 and add the patch into the SOURCES? Thanks

Hi, I have one centOS 4.4 with apache and some services. I want to upgrade to version 5 running: Yum -y -c /etc/yum.repos.d/base_centos upgrade Where the file bases_centos has: [base] name=CentOS-5 - Base baseurl=ftp://repository.mydomain/centos/5/os/i386 gpgcheck=0 timeout=1800 And, repository.mydomain is a mirror of mirror.centos.org It began to download all headers until I get this error: Error: Missing Dependency: libnewt.so.0.51 is needed by package crypto-utils Error: Missing Dependency: libnewt.so.0.51 is needed by package newt-perl Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies Error: Package initscripts needs kernel < 2.6.12, this is not available. Annoying Mouse Tricks

Hi All, Something that just has been annoying the daylights out of me for the past 9 months with no resolution in site. I've got a Hawking HKS 104 4 port KVM connecting my Linux workstation, 2 servers, and my wife's windows workstation to one monitor, mouse, and keyboard. No matter how I toggle back and forth whether by keyboard or directly on the device once I come back to the linux desktop scroll wheel on mouse no longer functions. Except for a brief time while running CentOS 4.4 it's always been this way. I've googled until there were just no more places left on the internet and searched through CentOS archives until I'd read everything from balls to bones without finding any helpful information. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on how a fella might resolve this? When I restart the machine (Linux) the scroll mouse works normally, that is until I toggle to the windows machine and back again or to one of the servers and back again. Then the mouse functions like a two button mouse not having a scroll wheel.
