XEmacs on CentOS 5

Either I'm having a case of "now you see it, now you don't" or I'm just plain stupid: When upgrading one of my 4.4-machines I discovered, that XEmacs (my text editor of choice; please no religious discussions) isn't part of the distribution anymore. OK. I progressed without it (and removed the old xemacs-packages because they were not working anymore). Then I installed the rpmforge-release and some yum-extensions (fastest mirror, protect and priority). Then I went to yumex. Looked for "emacs" and voila: the xemacs packages were there. So I installed them and they worked. I went to the next machine, started to upgrade it. When I tried to install xemacs I could not find it. Going back to the first machine I could not find those xemacs packages I didn't install (xemacs-el) and I don't dare to deinstall (and then reinstall) xemacs for fear I might never find it again. Does anyone have an idea where the package could be from (I have appended the header from "rpm -qi xemacs"? I think I remember, that when I installed it it said "base" Could it have to do with the fastest-mirror-plugin? Is there a way to find out which mirror yum is actually using? Custom CentOS5 DVD

Hello, Does anyone have an up-to-date page describing, step by step, how to make a customized CentOS5 DVD? I noticed that CentOS5 already comes with ~240MB of updates. So for starters, I'd like to create a new DVD with all the current updates. (And I have other custom scripts I need to install on top of that). I've googled around and tried various suggestions on the net: http://sipx-wiki.calivia.com/index.php/A_Kickstart_CD_for_sipX_on_CentOS http://cablemodem.fibertel.com.ar/lateral/stories/38.html However, I have not been able to find step by step instructions for CentOS5. For example, genhdlist has been deprecated. Also, the centos-release-5.0.0 rpm grabs a new GPG key from the net, even though an identical one is already on the DVD. This creates problems on custom DVD's I've created thus far; I'd like to have an unattended install that doesn't require a network connection. Thanks very much in advance for your help, -- Paul

I've gone through the trouble (after some 10 rounds I finally have something I'm happy with) and generated jigdo/template files for CentOS 5.0 iso's (CD/DVD i386/x86_64) (and CentOS 4.4 while I was at it: CD/DVD/ServerCD SRPMS/i386/x86_64). (and I started on this before the thread about creating the DVD's from the CD's started ;-) ) They are available at: http://tcs.uj.edu.pl/~buildcentos/centos-jigdo/ (I skipped the LiveCD since jigdo offers no size improvement here -- already for the ServerCD the template file is 125 MBs because of the different .img files inside the iso) These jigdo/template files should allow you to generate any of the listed cd/dvd isos from the publically available http://mirror.centos.org mirror site (which is DNS-aliased to something close to you). Jigdo will also allow using a local source of files (ie. an existing CD, etc...) You will need to install jigdo-file and jigdo-lite. It is available: - in package jigdo from dag's repository (rpmforge) for CentOS 4 (and others) - in package jigdo-file for debian/ubuntu (just apt-get it) - from the source website (both sources, and windows binaries, and statically linked linux binaries) http://atterer.net/jigdo/ Once installed usage is (...should be...) trivial: jigdo-lite --noask http://tcs.uj.edu.pl/~buildcentos/centos-jigdo/%.jigdo which will generate the requested (replace the % with what you want, see the http://tcs.uj.edu.pl/~buildcentos/centos-jigdo/ listing) iso file in the directory in which you run it. [If you have a local source of files you can skip the --noask and provide it when asked] Next step: get this included on the centos mirrors ;-) [hint hint] Afterwards: it would be nice to drop the iso files from the mirrors in their entirety and generate them on-the-fly using the JTE extensions package. Should be significant space-savings. [requires perl cgi in the hosting webserver, but should be very safe since it's all read-only access] Even later: it would be awesome if we could generate the jigdo/template during mkisofs (requires using a patched mkisofs). This would skip the slightly painful jigdo generation step (painful - because I have to download a local mirror of both the files and the CD/DVD images, much less painful to do it directly on the centos source/build system/mirrors) Both later steps are 95% there (the JTE jigit website/extensions/mkisofs patches/etc) and mostly require putting together rpms for EL4/5. (I'm going to be trying to put together a mkisofs-jte rpm which doesn't override the normal mkisofs rpm, but instead provides two files - /usr/bin/mkisofs-jte and it's manpage) This should also allow more customized images (like the rolled up updates) without increasing mirror space usage. Jigdo (combined with hardlinking identical files, which I believe is already done) should enable drastic reductions in centos HDD footprint. Comments? Cheers, Maciej Zenczykowski

mirror rsync problem?

I've got an intranet mirror of centos, been updating it periodically, recently my updates started failing... I've tried several different mirrors as sources, but each time, the update fails at some random point with this error... rsync: read error: Connection timed out (145) rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(614) [receiver=2.6.8] rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (1605001 bytes received so far) [generator] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(463) [generator=2.6.8] per a bit of googling, it appears this may be a generic 2.6.8 error, as explained here... http://www.mail-archive.com/rsync@lists.samba.org/msg16205.html for what its worth, my local mirror server is actually a Sun ultrasparc running Solaris 10, with its built in rsync 2.6.8, which appears to be the same version as is running on the centos mirror servers.

printconf

Does anyone know of a command line tool for printer configuration for CentOS 5. I have used "printconf-tui --Xexport > printers.xml" to copy my printer setup in CentOS 4.x (then Ximport to bring it back), but this no longer works in CentOS 5 and I would really like to retain this functionality. Can I re-install this tool or will it not work with the new CUPS? Is there an alternative? Do I have to re-configure all my printers by hand and discard my printers.xml files? Have completed two clean installs of CentOS 5 with no issues (other than permissions on ~/.ssh directory. One 32 bit system, one 64 bit. When I tried an upgrade from 4.4 on 64 bit system with two SATA drives in Raid 1 configuration, anaconda could not mount the root partition /dev/md1. The error message suggested it was because the partition was not formated which is obviously not correct. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks in advance. B.J. Java installs but won't play

Dear friends: I installed Sun's Java manually by downloading their Red Hat RPM. I followed instructions and the install came off fine (Done!), but when I try to play it, it won't work. I imagine that I probably need to create a symbolic link to the plugin. yum and wildcard problems

I am having trouble using wildcards ("*") with yum in Centos 5. Listing or installing packages using them just immeidately fails with a "No match" error, and I'm not sure why. Here is an example. Any comments? I'd love to fix this. moving CentOS to a larger disk

Hello, I've got a CentOS 4.4 box that it's drive is dying. This machine has a lot of customizations done to it, custom configs and the like and i'd rather not have to do a full reinstall or manually copy over settings files. What i'm wondering is is there a way i can set up the new disk, make it bootable, then transfer the entire system over to it? I would then pull out the failing drive set the new one to be master, and go on with things? Recently i've had to do this on a FreeBSD system for pretty much the same reason, all data and settings went over fine and i'd like to have the same success here. Thanks. Dave.

Hi all, I don't see xorg-x11-libs-6.8.2-1.EL.13.37.7.i386.rpm in the CentOS4 x86_64 updates repo. It is listed in the security announcement: http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2007-April/013658.html I see the 4 other i386 packages there: devel, deprecated-libs, Mesa-libGL, and Mesa-libGLU. Formatting hdb?

Dear friends: Using Centos 5. I have two physical drives. During install, I made sure to check hdb as well as hda. Both were listed as partitions (which is correct). But my fstab file does not show hdb. How do I make sure that hdb has been formatted and is part of my file system. If hdb is not formatted, how do I format it, please. Sorry for the question. Red Hat Directory Server + Fedora Directory Server version correlation?

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone knows about version-number correlation between RHDS and FDS. I've sofar been quite unable to find anything about it. The latest version of seems to be 7.1SP3: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/dir-server/ And the latest version of FD seems to be 1.0.4: http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Download Most sources I could find state that "FDS and RHDS are identical" but don't delve deeper. So, is FDS 1.0.4 equal to RHDS 7.1SP3? If not, what happens to bugs fixed in FDS? Are the features the same in FDS and RHDS? Greets, Rubin.

MySQL 5.0.22 on CentOS 4.4

Hi...I was pleased to see MySQL 5.0.22 and PHP5 in CentOS 5.0 and as much as I need these updates I think I should be safe and not upgrade until CentOS 5.1 is released. But for now I am running CentOS 4.4 with stock MySQL and PHP rpm packages. I need to upgrade MySQL to 5.0 and I noticed there is a mysql-server- 5.0.22-1.centos.1.i386.rpm package in the centosplus directory. There is also a mysql-server-5.0.27-1.el4.centos.i386.rpm package but I think I should stick to .22 so that the eventual upgrade to CentOS 5.1 will be easier. I have two questions for any of the MySQL administrators running CentOS 4.4... 1. What has been your experience like with the mysql-server-5.0.22- 1.centos.1.i386.rpm centosplus package on high load sites? 2. Is it better to just use the official RPM from MySQL instead? http://mysql.org/get/Downloads/MySQL-5.0/MySQL-server-community-5.0.37- 0.rhel4.i386.rpm/from/pick My concern with the official MySQL rpm is that it's version 5.0.37 and will be different from the one in CentOS 5.1 So for now I think I would like to use 5.0.22 with stock PHP 4.3.9 then later upgrade PHP to version 5.1 also from centosplus. Any performance or stability reason not to? Please share your experience and opinions. TIA!

Upgrade 4.4 to 5.0 (Error in transaction)

Hi! I'm having a problem upgrading an existing 4.4 installation to 5.0. - The machine is a x86_64 architecture - I'm upgrading from a DVD - I've used the same DVD to sucessfully upgrade another machine (therefor I'm pretty sure that it is OK) - The error occurs on both DVD-drives on the machine (therefor I think its not a problem with a particular DVD-drive) I'm clicking through the upgrade dialogs. Then the machine prepares to install the packages. At the end of this a dialog-box appears: Error running transaction There was an error running your transaction for the following reason(s): Apart from that text there is only a Reboot-button (no explanation) On the other virtual terminals there is nothing unusual (last line in Ctrl+Alt+F3 is "Preparing to install packages") The /root/upgrade.log is empty. My guess is that there might be some packages that offend the installer (there are some non-standard packages on the machine, don't shout at me: I know that's bad (amongst them a 32-bit firefox)). Is there a way to find out which packages are the bad ones? Any tips would be most welcome. Thanks PS: What I'm trying right now is removing the worst offenders and retry the upgrade procedure in text mode.

Hardware-independent server installation

I don't have a system similar to my active server, and I'd like to install CentOS to a new drive on a spare system and then load that disk in my server once it's configured with the services I need. How hardware-independent is a server installation? What should I look out for when doing this? I've been using Linux on servers for several years and am a software/hardware integrator by day. It seems like this should be trivial but I'd like to know if I'm missing any obvious gotchas. I'm guessing the biggest issue is associating eth names with actual devices (modules.conf?), since the systems are unlikely to use the same Ethernet hardware.

Machine SLOWWWS and then stops after a few minutes running centos 5.

Hi all, I had asked the other day about my new machine amd 6000+ and strangely SLOWWING down then eventually stopping. I have tried a new 500W power supply, I took out the extra video card, and just used the one on the motherboard (both are nvidia one with DVI one RGB). I took out all the RAM and tried differnent RAM. I ran memtest86 (ran fine until the machine turn off). Harddrives should be fine since they are not active during memtest86. THe temperature on the CPU has never been higher that 118 degrees. This is after it turns off and I go into the hardware monitor. I reset the BIOS settings or loaded defaults. I did download from ASUS the current BIOS for the M2N-MX motherboard. I cannot change the mother board or processor without buying a new one. It is SO STRANGE that the system slows DOWN before shutting off. I run a continuous compile and use the time command to time it. The compile starts at about 16 seconds and SLOWS DOWN to 30 seconds right before turning off. cpuspeed is not running on the box. If anything its supposed to speed up not down. Is there anything else to try or any suggestions. I also boot centos 5 with "noapic" on the kernel line. Jerry

Hello. I am trying to forward the e-mails received to one address towards a php script. I am trying all I can but nothing does. I have edited my /etc/aliases file and added this line. ecard-bounce: "|/usr/bin/php /etc/smrsh/ecardbounce.php" Then, of course I do a 'newaliases'. In my /etc/smrsh I have placed the symbolic link defined above, which has been created this way: ln -s /home/my/scripts/ecardbounce.php /etc/smrsh/ecardbounce.php When using this configuration, I get the following error back by email: ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- "|/usr/bin/php /etc/smrsh/ecardbounce.php" (reason: 255) (expanded from: <ecard-bounce(a)myserver.com>) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- Status: 404 Content-type: text/html X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.9 No input file specified. 554 5.3.0 unknown mailer error 255 However, if I put a hardlink instead of the symlink, all works fine! How necessary is it to run this gem on a desktop with a constant power supply? It doesn't seem to be all that useful, except if there's some significant power consumption advantage to lowering the cpu speed. Doesn't the CPU run at full speed unless throttled down by temperature, or is that what this thing does (for desktops)? Thanks. new machine just turns off after some time.

Hi all... I have a new machine for centos 5. amd 6000+, 2 gig and 750GIG drives. Price is quite reasonable... Anyway... centos 5 installs fine, I was running fine then the machine just turned off. I tried to run a video for the last 8 hours on it waiting to happen again and it worked just fine. I then did a continues compile with a batch file and after a few minutes it just turned off... I saw the length of time to do the compiles was increasing. At the end about 10 seconds extra than the time when I first started.... I immediately jumped into the hardware monitor for CPU temp and it is registering 45C. around 114 F. Seems OK at this point.. I have heard before RAM or power supply. Do these symptoms still point to that? Does the power supply seem more likely than RAM? The RAM is DD2 Corsair. I am doubtful that the kernel just died or something for froze as the machine TURNS OFF. THanks for any tips. Jerry

Wow, virt-managerin Centos5 is very fussy!

If I tell it to use an NFS source (eg nfs://server/mnt/cdrom) then itin Centos5 tries to do a CIFS mount instead (I can see it running mount.cifs and in the xterm I ran virt-manager from it then asks for a password). Wow. If I tell it to use an lvm2 volume (/dev/VolGroup00/xentest - already created at 1Gb) then it goes through, calculates the amount of space required etc etc and then barfs with no error message beyond "transaction error". The only way I can get it to work is by letting it create a file (eg /xen/test1) and installing via http (why doesn't it allow file:// type install sources? Hmmph!). (Note: I have selinux disabled, so that shouldn't be a problem). Fortunately that succeeded; I told it to install the guest without lvm, and so I could then losetup the file to get to the raw filesystem after the install completed and do a dump. In future I can make a file system from this template and build my own config file, avoiding virt-manager totally. virt-manager... guh! -- rgds Stephen

Centos5 NFS install from loop-back mounted DVD image fails

NFS install from a loop-back mounted DVD image fails for me when it actually tries to start the RPM install process. I come to the point where anaconda checks the package dependencies, then it tells that the install process will be started in some minutes and the last thing I see is a message similar to: Preparing transaction from install media. Then this message box disappears and the install process is stalled. On text console #4 I see these two last lines: <5>SQUASHFS error: sb_bread failed reading block 0xb085 <5>SQUASHFS error: Unable to read page block 2c11bde, size fbb7 This happens on a x86_64 install, but I get a similar message when I try to install a i386 Centos5. Both DVD images were downloaded using Bittorrent and the sha1sums and md5sums are all correct. The NFS server is RHES4.4 i386. Any ideas how to fix this problem? Best regards, Bernd.

I've downloaded just the DVD iso via bittorrent, but when it starts the graphical installation phase an error message appears telling me that anaconda can't find the CD iso in the remote server. Seems that's looking for Centos-5.0-x86_64-bin-1of7.iso, I'm downloading it right now to go ahead but... I think I'm doing something wrong or there is some problems in the NFS DVD install... Problem installing CentOS 5.0

I decided to replace Suse 10.1 with Centos 5.0 on my file server. Im getting stuck right after I select the keyboard layout. I get the following message on the console: /dev/sdb: "sil" and "pdc" formats discovered ( using pdc)! and it just hangs there. I think sil and pdc are referring to the onboard raid chips that the drive was attached to. This drive was used in a machine with a Silicon Image raid chip and a Promise raid chipset in the past, now its attached to onboard nvidia based controller but not in raid mode. I tried to low level format the drive and it sill did not work. Any ideas, I don't have this problem with Suse or Freebsd.

Beta upgrade (could not find a decent answer yet)

Greetings All from Florida. As of tonight, Sunday April 14th, 07, I finished loading the dvd iso of 5 beta (or 4.92 as it is shown to be) and went archive diving to see what was up with the updater not finding the 4.92 files on the mirrors.. I only saw a few notes about removing a dev file and something else, then a comment about removing an image file, then a comment about not doing it in X as there is a bug....... Has anyone find a simple way to force yum to update without looking at the current version?? or at least telling the system to go get centos 5 even thou it is 4.92?? Any ideas would be great, as I am trying to take a crack at upgrading my Knopixx FADCA box to CentOS and seeing what all I can make out of the thing.... ALSO how do I go about enabling ax25 kernel support with the CentOS 5 releases??? Looking for a better way to build

I have been following the wiki on how to build a custom kernel, and it works great. Except, I am doing ongoing work with the internals of the kernel, and it is really awkward to set up a change and then build it using the standard methodology (edit the file to change, diff it against the original to make a patch file, rebuild the whole thing). Isn't there a way (and what is it) to play around with the kernel source files until they are in the shape I want them to be in, and THEN go through the whole build process again. Thanks. Migration from FC3 to Centos4.4 gives problems with Samba

Hi I have updated one of my servers from Fedora Core 3 to Centos. All services run fine except Samba. The Centos installation is fresh and I setup Samba in a similar way as I did before with Fedora. I copied the samba password file from the Fedora installation and also all user+machine accounts to the /etc/passwd|shadow etc. Problem I now have is that clients cannot find their server profiles when they try to logon (bath owner rights, or profile is unavailable). After some trial I found out that I can solve this issue by removing the XP client computer form the domain and then adding the client computer again. So it looks to me that the client machine is not seen properly by Samba. Is there a way to copy information from the old installation to the new Centos installation so that I don't have to re-join every individual computer to the domain again? Or is there a way I can do this with Samba? Thanks for any help or suggestions. Theo

Multipath-root (mpath) problems with CentOS 5

Hi list! I have a server with dual port Qlogic iSCSI HBA. I set up the same LUN for both ports, and boot the CentOS installer with "linux mpath". Installer detects multipathing fine, and creates mpath0 device for root disk. Installation goes fine, and the system boots up and works fine after the install from the multipath root device. After install the setup is like this: LUN 0 on port 1: /dev/sda LUN 0 on port 2: /dev/sdb and those form mpath0 device, which works OK. But then comes the problem.. when I add another LUN for both ports, the setup is like this: LUN 0 on port 1: /dev/sda LUN 1 in port 1: /dev/sdb LUN 0 on port 2: /dev/sdc LUN 1 on port 2: /dev/sdd And now after rebooting the system, root device multipath (mpath0) doesn't work anymore.. initrd seems to use/mount /dev/sda* partitions instead of mpath0 device. In fact the whole mpath0 is not started up. The weird thing is that the other LUN is now using multipathing instead.. using mpath1 device. How can I fix that? I'd like to use multipathing for both LUNs, also for root device. If I regenerate initrd with verbose flag, it just sets up the mpath1, not mpath0. I guess that's because mpath0 is not running when regenerating initrd. I have edited /etc/multipath.conf and disabled the "blacklist" line, and added multipath-entries for both LUNs. I just performed a fresh install of CentOS 5 64-bit on my AMD PC, added rpmforge repo, and performed a yum update. A list of dependency checking for other apps, then this roadblock: --> Processing Dependency: libevent-1.1a.so.1()(64bit) for package: nfs-utils --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: libevent-1.1a.so.1()(64bit) is needed by package nfs-utils A lot of googling hasn't produced a fix. Weird time(zone)?

I installed CentOS 5 on a server today (wiping clean the drive which had 4.4 on it). During installation I picked the correct timezone, location and all. Yet, upon booting the machine, it seems to think that it's 6 hours earlier than it really is. The BIOS has the correct time and date on it. /etc/locatime was originally what /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Denver would've been. I removed it and symlinked it instead thinking it might change things - it didn't. Right now, 'date' tells me: [1] 13:21:12 <root@bigbertha:~> date Sat Apr 14 13:21:13 MDT 2007 But it's actually 19:21... So, uh, what's going on? Why is the time so off? Looking for a good disk exerciser

I recently added a Seagate 400Gb SATA drive to my system, and it has been behaving strangely since I put it in. for one thing, the BIOS S.M.A.R.T. came up with a warning the last time I booted with it enabled, saying that I should backup my data and replace the disk (!). I still have not made any irreversible data transfers to this drive, and I have some time yet to take it back, but I'd like to know for sure that it needs it, or at least have some reasonable evidence of failure. What is a good program out there that exercises a disk to give some assurance of errors or lack thereof? Thanks. CentOS 5 dual boot with XP success

Hello. A happy, error-free report about my experiences last night. Only one small inconvenience in the install. I have an AMD Athlon64 3700+ in a MSI Neo2-F motherboard (Via K8T800 Pro chipset), with a WD Raptor SATA drive and an older WD 80gig IDE drive. The system has 1 gig of RAM and a CDROM (not DVD). The on-board network is a Realtek 8169/8110 chip. My video is a 6800GT (AGP). The BIOS instructs the machine to boot off the SATA drive first, which is partitioned completely to a recent install of Win XP SP2. Using CentOS 5 CDs, I booted and began the installation on my IDE drive. I told Grub to install itself on the SATA drive's MBR (this required going to the advanced options menu), and I partitioned my IDE drive entirely to / , except for 1 gig to swap and 10 gig to vfat (for a simple, common writeable partition between XP and Linux). I installed CentOS 5 without glitches, rebooted, and Grub came up as it should. I proceeded to boot to CentOS. My one problem: no network. The Realtek chip was not detected. I rebooted to XP, did some googling, and figured out that I needed to download the appropriate Realtek drivers, build and install them. I put the drivers on my vfat partition (grabbing the NVidia video drivers too), rebooted to CentOS, built/installed the drivers, and then had to reboot one more time before network would work. All finished! The slowest part of the process was customizing which packages to install and sitting around waiting to swap discs. My old Lite-On CD burner has been moved forward through a few system builds now... it keeps chugging. Brian Barnes Washington University in St. Louis

Need a driver for a Canon MP160 printer

As usual, virtually every printer on the market comes with Windows, and sometimes Mac OS, drivers for the printers, but they almost never come with Unix/Linux drivers. This time Google was not my friend. I got a pointer to a drivr, dommon<something>mp160.ppd that doesn't appear to exist anywhere on the web, and there are two driver files from Canon Asia that want a lot of i386 libraries, including a newer glibc than I am NOT prepared to inflict on my x86_64 machine until CentOS 5 (once I get that bloody disk drive replaced with a good one). Any suggestions? Is there anything like the Windows UPD available on Linux/Unix/CentOS? That would be a coup for whoever did it.... Thanks. I know this is a bit OT, but the subject of CPU speed came up here and I was (and have been for some time) curious: What is the actual speed of an AMD CPU? E.g., I have a Athlon 64 X2 "4200+" but my /proc/cpuinfo shows 1005.164 MHz for the two cores. What do those mean? Is there a reference for this (huge) discrepancy? Also, is there a way (and what) to tell what the actuall running speed of memory is? Thanks. Sendmail Generics Configuration LDAP

I am trying to configure Sendmail to do Generics lookups using LDAP. I added FEATURE(`genericstable', `LDAP') to my sendmail.mc file, and was planning on using an existing LDAP directory that should contain the information needed (currently doing aliasing). I do not know where to specify the non-standard attributes that we are using, and would prefer to not change my sendmail.cfdirectly (makes it very impractical when changing things later). I had this working using a file, but am unsuccessful when doing this through LDAP. Does anyone have a working generics through LDAP configuration? I see the information that was added to my sendmail.cf when using the above directive in my sendmail.mc (Kgenerics -v .... -k .... ), any help would be great. Strange Question regarding CentOS 5 install

Ok so the install has been seamless on a few machines and I decided to try it on my laptop (a Dell D620). I had everything working great and kicked it around a bit and then figured, if I'm going to keep this on my laptop I'll need to reformat everything, enable some encrypted filesystems etc ... not a big deal ... kind of Here's the problem, the laptop has a resolution of 1440x900 and X wont start up on it therefore, I do not get the graphical installer ... not a big deal if you don't want to customize your volume groups and logical volumes, but I would like to. So far I've tested graphical installers from Mandriva and Knoppix and they will actually load a graphical installer but CentOS 5 does not. Does anyone know if there is a way for me to get the GUI installer so I can monkey with VG's? currently these options aren't available in the curses menu set up. And yes I know I could just as easily create regular etx3 filesystems with no LVM2 stuff (no I'm not going to be adding more drives any time soon to my laptop) but it would be nice to know it's possible. I was using LVM2 on my last laptop and it was handy having the ability to grow and shrink some filesystems. I know it's probably not on the agenda from the upstream provider either but automating the encryption of newley created filesystems at the point of install would be sweet too :D -- Lonny -- "To mess up a Linux box, you need to work at it; to mess up your Windows box, you just need to work ON it."

Moving/copying the MBR

Are there any tools for working with and moving or copying the MBR? My machine has 2 PATA drives (hda & hdb) and 2 SATA drives (sda & sdb). The MBR is on hda, but I would like (eventually or sooner) to boot from sda because it is two years newer, faster and, hopefully, more reliable. Even if I don't change that, I'd like a backup MBR on sda in case hda fails (hdb has gone sour a few times due to something in the power setup, although no data lost and it always comes back). In order to copy the MBR, I'd also need to edit it because the drive configuration would be different, as well as the location of my /boot partition. Any suggestions? Thanks. MD5 checker for Win2000 for ISOs

For a change, I am going to try and check the checksum before burning the CDs.... My burner is on a Win2000 box, and I have all 6 of the Centos 5 ISO images there already. So I grab a checker from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/freeutilities/md5.php And checking the ISO image files with this program, I get different numbers than in the MD5 hash txt file. Can anyone point me to a 'proper' checker?

minimize download bandwidth techniques

I know of a few techniques for minimizing server bandwidth when bittorent is not an option. 1) If you have the beta isos, you can rename them as centos 5 isos and then rsync from a mirror that allows rsync (such as kernel.org) Then only changes from beta to centos 5 plus some overhead is downloaded. I suppose you could use this technique with bittorrent too. 2) Instead of downloading both cd and dvd isos, just download the cd isos and use a script to create the dvd iso. Is it possible to install directly from a DVD iso image downloaded to a USB external drive as a file on a FAT filesystem? 4.92 beta update to centos5 proper words of caution

For those of you who are going to do the update from the centos5 beta to centos 5 proper despite the warnings, this is a(n incomplete) list of instructions for how to accomplish this 1. Get yourself into runlevel 3 (telinit 3 from terminal) as the dbus update will die if you're in X. 2. Setenforce 0 # turn off selinux as there have been some unconfirmed reports that it will interfere with the updates. 3. yum update 4. rpm -qa release="*fc6*" # this will let you find and identify the packages which had the release string changed from fc6 to el5. 5. manually update these rpms to the corresponding proper versions for centos5 proper. I'm not sure how many of these there actually are, so follow-ups to this post are welcomed. kernel panic with OS update

I've a bunch of RHEL4 systems that were originally installed with RH 4.3 using dd - a "master" system was installed, then the hard-drive was copied verbatim using dd to all the new systems. (Yes, I know that's bad. Yes, I'm working to fix that.) Recently I put yum on all those machines, created a yum repo and updated them to 4.4 with all the updates. That includes a new kernel. When the new kernel booted up, this is what happened: Loading ext3.ko module Creating root device Mounting root filesystem mount: error 6 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none Switching to new root switchroot: mount failed: 22 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! The old kernel works just fine. I don't think there's a hardware or BIOS issue with the new kernel. For some reason, I'm inclined to believe that there's some subtle issue with the file system, due to the install method. But then why the old kernel is working fine? I've a feeling that I'm missing something here. Some interaction between bootloader, kernel and filesystem maybe? -- Florin Andrei http://florin.myip.org/

LAMP on CentOS 4

Is there a reasonable way to upgrade to the latest Apache, MySQL and PHP packages on a CentOS 4 machine without breaking a bunch of dependencies or upgrading every other package on the machine manually (assuming that would even work)? I'm not having much luck getting an online 4 to 5 upgrade to work on a basic server, so I'm thinking that's not going to be a viable option for all of my remote CentOS 4 installations. For those who "rent servers" that came pre-loaded with CentOS 4, what do you do if you want to run CentOS 5? Have the ISP run the upgrade from the console for you and hope they can do it with minimal damage to your data? :) Thanks, Scott

CentOS 5 and bittorrent

Folks. This is likely to be the hardest hit CentOS has ever taken with regards to bandwidth needs. I was really hesitant to use bittorrent for this type of thing for a long time. However, it really is nice to give back at least what you take. At the moment, I'm seeing almost 3000 connections to the torrent. That times 3.5 gigs is a pretty huge chunk of data... and it has just begun. What I'm getting at here, is CentOS gives a LOT! If you have never considered doing your downloads via a torrent, please do consider this and try to give back at least the bandwidth you use. I'm sure the CentOS team will appreciate this more than you will ever know. Me? I'm downloading via a winders box and I use bit tornado which is extremely flexible in setting upload and download allowances as well as the number of connections. And it's free. I'm sure others use many of the other aps available.. just please consider using the torrent. Best, John Hinton

Feel free to contribute your experiences there. +++++++++++++++++++++++ About release version ( Major and Minor release tracking ability ) There has been a fair bit of talk about upstream adopting a new policy on Updates and the ReleaseCycles. I'd like to clarify what that means for CentOS users and how we will approach this issue. The first thing is of-course, that no one really knows exactly what is going to happen on this front upstream. ( perhaps a better way to say the same thing would be that - noone upstream will tell us what they intend to do! ) As far as we can work out, there are going to be some options created for users as to what upgade path they intend to follow, how that is going to work and what the distro specific implementaion of this policy is going to be : open to discussion, since there is no clarity from upstream. So we need to keep the options open. At this time time, on CentOS-5 we have created infrastructure and package management options that will allow users to either stick with the recommended default option of staying with the latest released security and bugfix rpms or to be able to branch out into minor release tree's (eg. allowing a user to keep his/her machine at CentOS-5.0.x, and not upgrading to CentOS-5.1 when it becomes available ). +++++++++++++++++++++++ How to get help with CentOS The best place to start when looking for help with CentOS is at the wiki ( http://wiki.centos.org/GettingHelp ) which lists various options and communities who might be able to help.
