two 2-node clusters or one 4-node cluster?

Hello, I'm planning migration of current two clusters based on CentOS 6.x with Cman/Rgmanager going to CentOS 7.x and Corosync/Pacemaker. As the clusters and their services are on the same subnet, and there no particular security concerns differentiating them, I'm also evaluating the option to transform the two clusters into a unique 4-node one during the upgrade. Currently I'm testing a virtual 4-node CentOS 7.4 cluster inside oVirt 4.2 and things seem to behave well. Before going further in deep with tests and so on, I'd like to check with the community about how many CentOS 7.x clusters composed by more than two nodes are in place and what are the feedbacks on them in terms of incremented latency/communication, ecc scaling out. Also general feedback related to CentOS 6 and scalability of cluster nodes number is welcome. Thanks in advance, Gianluca

Redirect output from python script with systemd

Hi all, I need to redirect an output from python script that runs as a systemd service. I have tried to redirect its output in Exec statement without luck. Hi All, I am trying to build a command line with spaces in the argument. This demonstrates what I am trying to do. Clearly the first two commands work fine. However, the last 4 lines to not. /opt/libreoffice5.4/program/soffice.bin --headless --convert-to csv "/tmp/file.xlsx" /opt/libreoffice5.4/program/soffice.bin --headless --convert-to csv "/tmp/file 2.xlsx" MSG="file 2" MSG="csv \"$MSG\"" echo $MSG /opt/libreoffice5.4/program/soffice.bin --headless --convert-to $MSG I am trying to make a variable containing spaces which is MSG. Then add to that variable the argument csv. The "echo" above prints the write stuff. But when I try to use it in the last command its no longer valid and says Source file could not be loaded. What am I missing? much searching hinted to arrays and using \$ but I could not get that to work. Thanks. Jerry

weird slowdowns with recent CentOS 6 update

I just spent a while trying to debug some weird slowdown issues, and I thought I’d let the mailing list know in case it helps anyone else, or someone has a cleaner solution (or better ways of debugging the real issue). Just by way of context, we have a cluster using Infiniband and CentOS 6 (up to the latest patches as of a couple weeks ago, so 6.9+anything newer) and OpenMPI 3.1.0. Most of the nodes are "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 0 @ 2.60GHz” or "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz”, currently with kernel .6.32-696.30.1.el6.x86_64 Recently (I believe when we upgraded to that kernel, but not 100% sure that's really when it started), certain parallel floating-point-compute intensive jobs would sometimes (maybe 1 time in 20) run very slowly. The overall speed was reduced by about a factor of 2, but the slowdown appeared to be localized to specific routines, which would go from taking ~1s to ~50-100s. I first assumed it had to do with communication, but as I made the timing information more fine grained, it became clear that nearly trivial loops like DO I=1,GRIDC%RL%NP DWORK1(I,ISP)= REAL( DWORK(I,ISP) ,KIND=q) ENDDO were a large part of the problem. The only thing I could find after poking around that was at all odd is that when this happened, khugepaged would be taking 100% of cpu for tens of seconds on the affected nodes. It appears, although it’s not completely certain yet (since the problem appears rarely enough to that it’s hard to definitively rule out), that disabling THP by putting “never” in /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled and /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/defrag fixes the problem. I guess I am also still wondering what exactly khugepaged does, and what kind of problems I should worry about because I disabled it. The documentation I’ve found for it doesn’t really explain what the transparent huge pages are good for. Noam

They both (C6 and C7 versions) require many non OS tools to build. For CentOS-7 .. we need the rust-toolset, llvm-toolset, and devtoolset-7, to get the firefox to build. For CentOS-6, we need less items (no llvm-toolset required .. all the rest is required). But, there is no released source code for the EL6 version of rust-devtoolset upstream. I am working on this now .. but we had the 6.10 release and the also 32 other items that dropped for CentOS-7 (both of which are now done). gpg2 (GnuPG) Security Update for CentOS 6.10

Where do I get an update for gpg2 (GnuPG) for CentOS 6.10 that is compliant with CVE-2018-12020? I'm trying to update gpg2 (GnuPG GNU Privacy Guard) on my fully updated CentOS 6.10 computer to comply with CVE-2018-12020. My system has gpg2 package gnupg2-2.0.14-8.el6.x86_64.rpm This package does not appear to be compliant with CVE-2018-12020. I can not find and update anywhere. I have tried downloading the upstream version 2.2.8 from GnuPG.org but am having trouble building it for CentOS 6.10 primarily due to a requirement for a newer version of glibc. I'm getting the error undefined reference to 'clock_gettime' and have not been able to resolve it Any suggestions on where to download the update or when an update might be available or how to build gpg2 version 2.2.8 for CentOS 6 is appreciated. Samba issues with Win 10

Hi, folks, Just ran into a problem: someone with a new laptop, running Win 10, version 1709, tried to map their home directory (served from a CentOS 6.9 box, and it fails, with Windows complaining that it no longer supports SMBv1, and if you go to their site, you can install support for that manually.... The server running samba can *not* be updated to 7 - we have a lot of stuff based off it, and most of our users use it, one way or another, so it's a major thing when we do finally upgrade (or, more likely, replace the server). Has anyone run into this, and if so, any workarounds on the Linux end? mark

ZFS on Linux repository

Hi list, we all know why ZFS is not included in RHEL/CentOS distributions: its CDDL license is/seems not compatible with GPL license. I'm not a layer, and I do not have any strong opinion on the matter. However, as a sysadmin, I found ZFS to be extremely useful, especially considering BTRFS sad state. I would *really* love to have ZFS on Linux more intergrated with current CentOS. From what I know (and I can go wrong, obviously), while the incompatible licenses prevent CentOS from shipping it, nothing should prevent to have a package for enabling *its repository*, better yet the kmod-enabled one. I was thiking to something as a ZFS SIG, where we can simply issue "yum install zfs-sig" and have the correct kmod-enabled repository enabled. I searched the list but I did not found anything regarding native ZFS. Any feedback on the matter is welcomed. LVM problems

Hi! Folowing setup: 4x HD 500TB 1st: /boot 4GB, remaining part LVM 2nd, 3rd, 4th all LVM LVM volumes: - 30G /root - 8G /var - 8G /tmp - 200G /var/log/pgsql - 800G /var/spacewalk - 4G swap System boots into emergency mode because it does not find any of the logical volumes defined, because it does not enable the LVM volume group. Giving "lvm", then "vgchange -a y", followed by CTRL-D continues to boot to full multiuser mode. How can I make the system to enable the volume group and automatically boot to full multiuser mode? Looks there is something broken at some point and ths system does not enable the volume group. Any idea? -- Thomas

cron.daily and others, not running

Hello there, I've just noticed that scripts in /etc/cron.{daily,weekly,...} are not launched for several weeks (I noticed a `locate` not finding a recently added binary). CentOS7/Mate Qt bugs/features?

We have recently migrated from CentOS6/Gnome to CentOS7/Mate - and have noticed 'glitches' with some Qt applications that appears to be linked to the 'org.mate.Marco.general' 'compositing-manager' setting - and wondered how we 'fix' the issue ... Below is a PyQT4 python script that shows the issues: 1. With 'compositing-manager' set to 'true' (I believe the default setting): gsettings set org.mate.Marco.general compositing-manager true Running the script and the window background is transparent - which is fine However, if the pull down menu is selected and the 'Toggle' button pressed, the menu stays on the screen - and stays put even if the window is moved 2. With 'compositing-manager' set to 'false' : gsettings set org.mate.Marco.general compositing-manager false Running the script and the window background is no longer transparent - which is not good, but the pull down menu issue is fine ... We're using Nvidia cards with the Nvidia drivers - but I can also reproduce the issue on a Vmware player instance It would be good to know if anyone else can reproduce this with Mate ? Using CentOS7/Gnome3 works as expected (transparent background and pull down menu is fine) Anyone have any idea what the problem(s) might be and how to fix it/them ? C++11 and GCC 5+

This may be common knowledge to some, but it was new to me. Libraries that use C++11 and are compiled with GCC 4.8.x that CentOS 7.x has are NOT binary compatible with GCC 5.x or newer. It seems to only effect C++11. What you have to do - create /opt/gcc55 (or whatever) Rebuild any libraries that use C++11 that you need in something compiled with GCC 5+ and install them within that prefix. Then point to them in that prefix when building what you need to build. -=- The Linux runtime linker seems to get it right (as long as you have /opt/gcc55/lib64 in path) and not load wrong version of library, so you don't need to use rpath. Hi, I am trying to configure linux bonding using balance-rr configuration. I could not find a way to configure dhcpd.conf for this purpose and failed miserably when I tried the following (dhcpd just failed): host servername { hardware ethernet [mac address interface #1] ; hardware ethernet [mac address interface #2] ; fixed-address 10.0.10.6; } In my understanding balance-rr would be issued a single IP address but using 2 mac addresses in round-robin mechanism. While most things have been done with RPMs, some installs have had to be done via CPAN for Perl and PEAR for PHP. Is there a way of getting a list of everything that has been installed using these tools?

Hello there, I'm encountering blocking issues with VMWare Workstation v14/v12 on CentOS 7. The issue is that any Linux guestsystem will get network-disconnected after a short while. I tried w/ brand new guest installs, guests coming from a v12 WS. Tried different guest network settings, I always get disconnected. I found several cases like this on the Web, but couldn't see any working solution yet. My CentOS7 runs 4.9.75-204.el7.centos.x86_64 kernel. On my previous CentOS 6, still alive, v12 works like a charm. Does anyone have experience with this? Regards, -- wwp

Postfix, system notifications and local servers

Hi, I have CentOS 7 running on half a dozen public servers. For some stuff like automatic updates using yum-cron, I have Postfix installed with a relatively basic configuration. This allows me to send important notifications to my mail address info(a)microlinux.fr. When there's a batch of updates, I get one mail per machine, so I can check quickly if everything went OK without having to connect to the server. Now I'd also like to use this setup on machines that aren't in a datacenter and facing the Internet. For example, servers that have "dummy" hostnames like nestor.microlinux.lan or sauvegarde.scholae.lan. Is there a way I can setup Postfix so this machine can send an e-mail to info(a)microlinux.fr, even if 'hostname --fqdn' returns a "dummy" hostname? The man page isn't helping, nor have I been able to find examples that work. For example, the man page claims I can do ipmitool lan get active, and I try, and it says, "invaling lan command, get". Do I set the MAC address for the lan to NIC 2? Anyone have a clue - I do *not* want martians on the real network. mark

lightdm + xorg.conf + nvidia driver

Hello CentOS-Community, I have to maintain a server that should be useable with VNC and some software requires to run VirtualGL. Also a nvidia graphic card is installed. After downloading and installing the nvidia driver from nvidias homepage and modifying the xorg.conf as mentioned on the virtualgL-homepage, I am not able to restart lightdm anymore. Lightdm should be running, otherwise it is not possible to run virtualgl in an appropriate way. I had the same/similar issues on three different servers with three different nvidia graphic cards. Specifying different options for different " smb" type gvfs mount

Hi, I'm trying to use smb:// URLs with gvfs-mount and/or similar desktop functionality to access SMB shares on different servers that support different protocol versions and features. With some of the servers, mount will fail with a default configuration, but I have been able to make it work by editing some of the "client" options in /etc/samba/smb.conf. The problem is, those changes will cause the operation to fail on other servers; I can't seem to find a combination of settings where all shares will work. Does anyone know if there is an alternative way to specify client options that will apply to only specific URLs/shares, and not everything of SMB type? Note that I might be able to get by if I could set the "max protocol" individually for the different file-systems or URLs. I known that I might use mount.cifs and related "fstab" entries as an alternative, but its password handling seems a lot less convenient. I'm on a CentOS 7 system where all updates had been applied as of a few days ago. Thanks, - Toralf

Dolphin fails to refresh files (cont'd)

Hi, Some time ago I reported a problem with Dolphin on bugs.centos.org. When extracting an archive, the new files don't appear, and I have to press F5 to refresh the current directory display. I just found out a specificity of this bug. This only seem to happen on those installations where I run the 4.4.x kernel (kernel-lt package from elrepo-kernel repository). Any idea how I could solve that problem ? I suggest dovecot if you don't want to deal with Cyrus IMAP, but I can tell you from first-hand experience that you used to be able to use procmail to deliver to Cyrus IMAP, using 'deliver'. However, if you get postfix to deliver directly via lmtp, you can take advantage of SIEVE to filter your mail, which is quite powerful. It probably is same simple on Linux as it is on FreeBSD - I have servers under FreeBSD (or rather multiple jails on FreeBSD box). Good luck! The backend uses its own files in a manner that is optimised for running IMAP, which improves performance and load on the server. You don't have to configure the upcall stuff as it's already done, you don't need to generate a credential cache for root as it can just use the keytab, and if you've already setup a machine to talk to AD with SSSD you've probably done everything else. I'm running KDE under C7. When I print a pdf from the document viewer, graphics does not come through, not even on print to file. lp will print the graphics. Updated krb5 rpm package altered existing krb5.conf - No go

Hi, I did an centos update from 7.4 to 7.5 and the krb5 package altered the existing and used config file! That should be a no go from my pov, as in my setup it broke some services which had a problem with the includedir line which was added. Shouldn*t there be a rpmnew config file be created instead with the new/optional/added settings? Regards . Götz

Hi, I am facing issue stoping NetworkManager to update resolv.cfg, I am using below configuration for eth0 interface: TYPE=Ethernet BOOTPROTO=dhcp DEFROUTE=yes IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=no IPV6INIT=yes IPV6_AUTOCONF=yes IPV6_DEFROUTE=yes IPV6_FAILURE_FATAL=no IPV6_ADDR_GEN_MODE=stable-privacy NAME=eth0 UUID=93b90a46-dab5-4a67-8fd0-fefe8874a8b9 DEVICE=eth0 ONBOOT=no PEERDNS=no PEERROUTES=yes IPV6_PEERDNS=yes IPV6_PEERROUTES=yes DNS1=<ipv4 address> DNS2=<ipv6 address> Also, added dns=none in NetworkManager.conf file. Whenever I am restarting NetworkManager, resolv.cfg gets updated and only ipv4 nameserver is displaced, whether I am expecting both the ips (ipv6 and ipv4 address to be present in resolv.cfg file. I set up two servers with KVM on the first I have 6 KVM installed Systems on the second I have 5 KVM installed systems? Yahoo, among other places, has set their dmarc records to p=reject: dig +short txt _dmarc.yahoo.com "v=DMARC1; p=reject; pct=100; rua=mailto:dmarc_y_rua@yahoo.com;" So, if your mail hosting provider enforces dmarc,(gmail does) and you get mail from a list that doesn't rewrite the headers, and people from places like yahoo post to the list, you'll likely get some form of warning about being being kicked off the mailing list every now and then. The frequency depends on how often people from p=reject places post, and what the settings are for bounce handling of the mailing list in question. I believe that the current version of mailman can be configured to do the necessary header rewrites. Some lists I'm on only do the rewrites for headers of posts coming from p=reject sites (much less annoying than having them all rewritten).

Hi all - I am trying to figure out how to add a wild card certificate given to me for a CentOS installation. I have a script that sets up HTTPS so I am a little familiar with things - but they provided me two files: name_ee.crt name_i1.crt I'm not sure how to apply that to the /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf file? Anyone done that before ? My initial searches were not helpful. Thanks, Jerry

About the membership issue

Concerning the disabled membership (yesterday). Is there anything that I should do? Visiting the "re-enable" link shows only a plain site with meta information about the list but without any feedback like "membership enabled". Albeit some postings are coming in again now (with "normalized" sender address <centos(a)centos.org>). Seems the work to resolve this issue is in progress ... -- Thanks LF

hi guys, cannot get it to work - shellinabox - not being programmer nor selinux sorcerer. shellinabox via apache, when I ausearch it all I get is: #============= unconfined_service_t ============== #!!!! CentOS7: Setting up ldap over TLS in kickstart file

Hi, I'm facing a problem with setting up LDAP+TLS client authentication in a kickstart script on CentOS7 for several days. Setting up manualy the config with system-config-authentication works but I need to automate this in kickstart for deploying cluster nodes. This show that the server side is running fine. hi how do you pass vars to rpmbuild for definition? eg rpmbuild --define \'"${_definition2}"\' I've been fiddling with ways to escape, but none is fricking working.. I mean, rpmbuild rushes to work(no errors nor failure) so if you try just the command line do not believe it, because later as it executes %if you will see process does not see these definitions. many thanks, L

Custom ISO With Post Installation Scripts

Dear All I have been working on a custom ISO with kickstart and a couple of post installation scripts and would like to have the script run before the login prompt. The custom ISO works; however, the scripts fails because some of the services, e.g. mariadb does not start before the server installation has been completed and rebooted; therefore, I have been putting the scripts in /etc/profile.d/ and after logging in the scripts will execute and upon completion of the script will be deleted from /etc/profile.d/. DuckDuckGo suggested that I copy the script to /etc/rc.d/rc.local and make it executable; however, I have tried that a few times and the script simply does not execute. Below is an excerpt from the ks.cfg. export SRCDIR="/run/install/repo" export DSTDIR="/mnt/sysimage" # copy scripts to the destintion of the server cp -v $SRCDIR/postinstall/script1.sh $DSTDIR/etc/rc.d/rc.local/script1.sh # Make scripts executable chmod +x $DSTDIR/etc/rc.d/rc.local.sh Since this is a ISO for a community project, don't think that tools such as Ansible, Chef, Puppet, etc. will work here. Also, it is a one time execution; therefore, I did not consider using systemd because the goal would be to have visibility while the script is running just as I see after I login; however, just need the script to be executed after the OS was installed and restarted and before the login prompt. Difficulty configuring RDMA in CentOS

Hi We are trying to configure RDMA for an infiniband connection between our data server (running CentOS 6.8) and our compute nodes (running CentOS 6.6). We have been trying to follow the instructions in https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/ht… however we are getting conflicting information on whether the RDMA is correctly configured. Some of what we have done and some of the data are below. Can you suggest what other tests and what other data we should get to debug this problem? /etc/rdma/mlx4.conf to set the port types properly for RoCE/IBoE usage. Edit /etc/modprobe.d/mlx4.conf to instruct the driver on which packet priority is configured for the “no-drop” service on the Ethernet switches the cards are plugged into. vim /etc/rdma/mlx4.conf You can find the right pci device to use for any given card by loading # the mlx4_core module, then going to /sys/bus/pci/drivers/mlx4_core and # seeing what possible PCI devices are listed there.The possible values # for ports are: ib, eth, and auto.However, not all cards support all # types, so if you get messages from the kernel that your selected port # type isn't supported, there's nothing this script can do about it. Hi, Wrote a couple articles on OpenSSH and on running your Git server in a CentOS 7 environment https://notrackers.com/the-command-line/openssh-primer/ and https://notrackers.com/the-command-line/setting-up-your-own-git-server/ And the domain name is honest, there no trackers on that blog. None. (that blog is actually for a WordPress project not ready for general use but it seemed like a good place for the articles too) -=- I am sure they aren't perfect, but they may be of assistance to some. Any blatant mistakes, I am not above correction. Git article needs SELinux instructions added for web content served outside of /var/www/html and the public web git viewer I'm planning to fork to fix some issues I have it (I'll contribute patches back if they want them) I still need to find a CI solution (alternate to Travis-CI) that works just from standard Git - e.g. a git hook when pushing commits or tagging a release that pings the CI solution causing it to do a standard git pull to run the build and unit tests.

/etc/gai.conf fails to prefer IPv4 over IPv6 for NFS

Using CentOS 6.9 with IPv4 configured, and _not_ disabling IPv6 yet, we want this NFS client system to prefer the IPv4 address of a dual-stack remote NFS server, which has both A and AAAA records in DNS. Otherwise we get a minutes long pause while automounter tries to mount the IPv6 address -- I can see automounter's '/bin/mount' running, using the AAAA record of the server, until that times-out and the IPv4 address of the server mounts successfully. Disabling IPv6 altogether works around the problem as expected, but is a bigger hammer than we wanted to use. :-) I found posts from others in a similar situation, and proposed solutions included modifying /etc/gai.conf to use: precedence ::ffff:0:0/96 100 I cp'd /usr/share/doc/glibc-common-2.12/gai.conf to /etc/ and tried that, with several other permutations (e.g. uncommenting other blocks of "label" and "precedence" settings) but none achieved the desired effect. Both Gnome and KDE give me a loud squishy bell at the thought of the drop of a hat. I did not get that in C6. I infer it is a C7-specific thing. Short of disabling my audio altogether, how do I make it go away? Anyone else seeing this: I've seen it with different line # as an upstream bug: kernel BUG at mm/slub.c:3601. When I look for slub.c, I think I found a slightly different version, since that's a blank line, but it's in the function slab_memory_callbac. On a possibly related note, one of my users who runs debian has been getting a ton of radeon errors... and guess what, it's to do with slab_callback. Anyone want me to post the backtrace from the abort? mark

Hi, I wanted to create an account on bugs.centos.org to report a minor but annoying bug with Dolphin. After trying to register by providing the login (kikinovak) and email address (info(a)microlinux.fr) I'm told that the email is already in use. Uh oh. Maybe I already created an account years ago and then forgot about it. So I click on the field for forgotten passwords, only to be told that there is no one under that name or email address. So I'm hitting a wall. Maybe one of the admins of bugs.centos.org is reading this and can help me out? Centos 7 and priorities

I've recently changed to Centos 7. My recollection from C6 is that a couple useful repositories need yum priorities to prevent some mixups. I do not remember what they are. My C6 is gone. Google has not told me what C6 repositories were. In the near future, I will be installing nux and epel. My understanding is that they do play well with each other and with base. Are there common useful C7 repositories that need help playing well with the aforementioned repos? C7, encryption, and clevis

We've been required to encrypt h/ds, and so have been rolling that out over the last year or so. Thing is, you need to put in a password, of course, to boot the system. My manager found a way to allow us to reboot without being at the system's keyboard, a package called clevis. Works fine... except in a couple of very special cases. Those systems, the problem is that, due to older software, and *very* expensive licenses that are tied to a MAC address, I have to spoof the MAC address since my users got new(er) machines. Clevis is trying to contact its password server, using the *real* MAC address, but our DHCP has to serve the *spoofed* MAC address. I know, from trying, that I can't have two entries for the same system. Can anyone suggest a solution? mark

Convert from LVM

I have a Centos 7 install using EXT4 on LVM. Its running as a VM inside KVM. Issue I have run into is that fstrim does not work due to the LVM. Without fstrim snapshots have gotten huge. Is there a way convert it from LVM to non-LVM without a complete reinstall?

A touch conused on context

Ok, we've got a set of directories bind mounted on our standard mount point for the web. The directory tree's been set with semanage fcontext -t -e /var/www <ourmountpoint>. In one of the websites under there is <site>/cgi-bin, and under *there are a couple of subdirectories, and a .dat file that is written to (I thihnk it's a counter, or whatever). Yet I see sealerts complaining that, if it was in enforcing mode, would not allow the .cgi that's in the cgi-bin write access on the file. What am I missing here? mark

git public web frontends

Hello, Set up a CentOS 7.5 VM linode for git now that github has been bought. I'm not anti-microsoft but I'm worried they will make changes that I don't like (e.g. requiring ms account, changing billing, etc.) so I figured better take control now. Currently moving my private repos and have them set up in my home directory there, but my public repos - I want to set them up with a web interface so people can browse them etc. and do a git clone w/o needing authentication. I'll be putting those in /srv/git and using a different username than the account for my private git repositories. But... can anyone recommend a web front end? It doesn't need to be as fancy as github but it does need to parse markdown as all my documentation is in markdown. Thanks for suggestions. Preferably something that "just works" with CentOS 7. -=- What would be fantastic is if someone made some kind of federation type service similar to how Mastodon works that lets public git repositories that opt in be found without needing to be on a centralized server. But I doubt that currently exists.

Hi, I'm currently writing my fourth book about Linux, for the french editor Eyrolles. The book will cover Linux server basics for pros, and it will be based on CentOS 7. I have a quick question to those of you who use either Windows 10 or Mac OS X as their everyday desktop system. How do you write a bootable CentOS USB disk using either Windows 10 or Mac OS X ? I've googled this, of course, and there's quite a lot of possible solutions out there, so I'm curious about a more or less *orthodox* way of doing things. Me, I've been 100 % GNU/Linux since 2001, CentOS is running on my workstation and on my laptop, and I'm simply writing the ISO file to a USB stick using dd if=CentOS-XXXX.iso of=/dev/sdX. Distributed System Monitoring

We have recently been assigned to help with the development of a system that will power non-computer/non-network devices located at various places within a 10,000 square ft facility. Most of these devices will operate on a fairly wide range of DC input power. The availability of surplus Cat-5 cable and the availability of low cost POE switches has been suggested as a method of powering these devices. There also appears to be some good, low cost installation options for all of the required system elements. The activity and health of the devices is directly related to their power consumption. Is there a standard CentOS feature or commonly used App that would facilitate monitoring the power being supplied by each of the individual POE switch outputs? Hi all, Will ldd display the paths to different libraries depending on their locations? I'm trying to build libxml2 version 2.9.6 in /usr/local with a newer version of zlib (1.2.8) than what are in the system folders for CentOS 6.8. I was afraid someone would say that :-). I am currently at 3.10.0-862.3.2 and downgrading to a 3.10.0-6xx kernel breaks some of the other packages. Is the mentioned bug documented somewhere? Firefox and Thunderbird freeze/crash followed by "nfs4_reclaim_open_state: Lock reclaim failed!" syslog messages

Hi, since I updated my workstation from CentOS 7.4 to 7.5, Firefox and Thunderbird (both 52.8.0, from CentOS repos) regularly freeze (or crash) and cannot be restarted afterwards. Trying to start them results in a "Bus error (core dumped)" (Firefox) and "Killed" (Thunderbird). The system log then shows: kernel: NFS: nfs4_reclaim_open_state: Lock reclaim failed! each time I try to start the applications (our homedirectories are mounted via NFS4). As far as I can see, no other applications are affected. The workstation needs to be rebooted to fix the situation. Has anyone else seen that or knows how to debug or fix this issue? I tried with strace and wireshark w/o finding anything helpful. Cheers frank

ARM64 CentOS AltArch release 7.5

Hi, I have two questions: (1) In 7.3 CentOS released a rootfs tar for ARM64. I can no longer find this under the 7.5 release. Furthermore, I could also not find anything on the ISO that seems rootfs-like in any near complete state. The closest was the LiveOS/rootfs.img, but it seems this is not a complete fs as yum is missing components, for example. So my question is: Is there any way to still use CentOS releases on new ARM64 development environments (without EFI boot support)? (2) In terms of UEFI firmware support in the ARM64 world (e.g. EDKII vs Uboot), is there any officially supported solution for CentOS, or do you simply support whatever supports the UEFI interface? If you get this kernel panic: PANIC: early exception 0d rip 10:ffffffff810462b6 error 0 cr2 0 The fix is to change the CentOS 6 VM CPU Type from Opteron_G5 (the default) to Opteron_G3. This was impacting me starting C6 VMs on a C7 host, so I thought I would post the fix to the list.

Dual booting Windows 10 and CentOS 7

Hi - I have an Engineering lab that was set up to dual boot with windows 7 and CentOS 6. This has worked just fine. I would like to get advice on doing the same with Windows 10. Steps I have tried - 1. Free up space for CentOS 7/C7 (50 gb). 2. Reboot to C7 installer. 3. Go to "SYSTEM -> INSTALLATION DESTINATION" Here I see my single Local Disk with 48.83 GiB free. I selected "I will configure partitioning" and hit "Done". This brought up - "New CentOS installation" and at the bottom 48.83 Gib free. I would like to put my C7 in there. I set the "New mount points will use the following partitioning scheme" to "Standard Partition" and hit "+". I get a popup titled "ADD A NEW MOUNT POINT" or where I have to select a "Mount Point" of /, /boot, /home, /var, swap, or biosboot. Do I have to select and define all the above all or is there a subset that will allow me to install C7? What would be reasonable sizes for the partition? After the install - how do I configure grub to Dual boot? Finally, is there a way to automate the process? I think with the W7 and C6 I was able to create on script that would execute and setup a PC automatically. Trying to print...

Well... we've got this poster printer. Been printing for years. There was an, um, incident at work, and long story short, the .ppd that I had had to create was lost. I've pretty much recreated it, and cupstestppd only gives a few warnings... but: I've got it set up in cups on my C 6 server, to go to the JetDirect socket, but I try to print, and it tries to send the file, and the next thing I know, cups says the printer's paused, and in messages I've got a "broken pipe" line. The printer does its internal cleanings and self-tests fine, and I can telnet to the printer. Any thoughts? mark

installing perl-CPAN without perl-local-lib

I'm still working on getting my brand new Centos 7 mail server working and I'm having problems with Perl. Most of the modules are available as RPM's which was straight forward. However, MIME::Parser, Net::SCP and Net::SSH aren't. In order to get these working I installed the perl-CPAN rpm and then installed the modules above. Doing this, installed perl-local-lib.noarch as a dependancy. The problem now is that when I used CPAN to the above modules they installed without errors, but were only available to the root user. I can't uninstall perl-local-lib without uninstalling perl-CPAN and I can't install perl-CPAN without installing perl-local-lib. Any ideas on how I can get to do the simple task of installing these modules system wide?

CentOS 7.5 gui login root only

Taking first steps on CentOS 7 1804. Logging into the Gnome/Gnome classic desktop from gdm works only for root. For other users, the screen flashes and the login screen returns. KDE/Plasma login is successful but ends up with a black screen with mouse pointer while all desktop processes appear to be running. The CentOS 7 system is running in a CentOS6 KVM virtual machine, which may be the problem. I have no physical machine for testing right now. These logins work for non-root users when the system is built from the CentOS 7 DVD. The non-working installation stems from a kickstart install which essentially includes a much larger number of packages, some 6k vs. 2.5k from DVD install). Maybe there are conflicts, but I have not been able to isolate anything.

Questions about yum-cron

Hi, Up until now I always kept my servers up-to-date manually. Currently I'm experimenting with yum-cron to automate this process. I read through various online tutorials, and now I have a couple questions. 1. As far as I know, when editing /etc/yum/yum-cron.conf, I can only use the following value for update_cmd : update_cmd = default If I understand this correctly, 'update_cmd = security' would have no effect, since contrary to RHEL, CentOS doesn't provide the necessary metadata to operate the distinction between security updates and other updates like mere bugfixes. Please correct me if I'm wrong. 2. It looks like editing /etc/yum/yum-cron.conf affects a *daily* operation of yum-cron, whereas editing /etc/yum/yum-cron- hourly.conf provides hourly operations. The documentation is not very clear about this, and I'm a little confused here. In other words, yum-cron.conf affects /etc/cron.daily/0yum-daily.cron, and yum-cron-hourly.conf affects /etc/cron.hourly/0yum-hourly.cron. I only really need yum-cron to run once a day, which would be sufficient. That being said, I can't figure out at what time it launches. All my users are in France, so ideally the daily yum-cron should be launched somewhere between 04:00 and 05:00 AM, since updating a package like httpd would restart the corresponding processes and kick online users out. I can't seem to figure out a way to define the exact time at which the daily yum-cron is being launched, since this doesn't seem to be controlled by standard crontab. Any suggestions ? Package security scanner for CentOS docker containers

Hi List, I’m looking for a command line package security scanner for CentOS docker containers. Is there any utility out there for checking alpine packages in an alpine docker container against the cve database? Tools similar to debsecan would be ideal (https://github.com/allthings/ debsecan), i.e a tool that can be launched from the host machine, will connect to a container on the host, or start up a docker image on the hosts, scan the packages and report CVEs relevant to each package. LVM GUI in live CD

Password recovery trick not working on CentOS

Hi, I remember back in the days, there was a neat trick to recover a lost root password, or more exactly, redefine a new password for root. 1. In the bootloader, boot the system with the 'init=/bin/bash' kernel argument. 2. Remount the root partition in read-write mode: # mount -o remount,rw / 3. Set the password for root: # passwd 4. Remount the root partition in read-only mode: # mount -o remount,ro / 5. Switch off the computer. I tried this out of curiosity on a CentOS 7 sandbox machine, and this doesn't seem to work anymore. I can boot to a 'bash' console and set the password OK. But this password doesn't seem to work on the subsequent normal boot. Anybody knows why this is so? move LDAP service to new server

On my old Centos 7 server I had set up a LDAP database for user authentication by other services (the server locally uses normal PAM authenticatin). I set it up originally from a web page describing how to set up an LDAP server for use with MS Outlook clients (which never worked) Is there any (easy to follow) instructions anywhere to tell me how to back up this service and restore it onto a new one?

I have NOUVEAU driver disabled however its "showing" in my X log file. Need help to understand about some lines which are printing on console

Hi, Some lines are printing on console: [CCafException] CAppConf@[1711]: CommAmqpListener: [CCafException] CAppConfig:: getString() Required config parameter [amqp_password] is missing from section [c ommunication_amqp] Can you help me to understand why we are getting these lines on console?
