Starting samba configuration

After installing samba, "rpm -q" shows me I have samba, samba-common, samba-client and samba-swat installed. However, putting http://localhost:901 in the browser brings up an error that the URL cannot be found. Not sure where to go from here. Problem with Postgresql

What I've finally done is set up a vfat partition on the on the server itself. That way, when I do a clearpart --linux in the ks.cfg it doesn't bother that vfat. Leaving the ks.cfg on there allows me to try different kickstart configurations with that server w/o having to make coasters each time. Once I find kickstarts I like, I don't mind placing them on a CD. Thanks for the help. Centos 4 and Supermicro ICH7R

Hi: I've tried to install centos 4.3 in a raid array, setuped on bios as mode "Adaptec". The chip is ICH7R but centos always sees 2 drives instead of the array that I create. I've contacted Supermicro support and they gave me this link ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/driver/SATA/Adaptec_ICH7R/Linux/Redhat/ , but the disk drivers I tried to use with centos 4.3 did not work, saying that the disk did not containt appropriate drivers for the hardware. Have anyone here had similar problems? does centos 4.4 solves this issue? I really need to install centos as an array... and as hardware RAID and not software RAID. Best Regards, Ricardo

Still unsure of the Dag Repos for CentOS 3

I have read the Wiki for the Yum stuff, and tried to pay attention to the variations for Centos 3/Centos 4 mentioned, but for the life of me, I can't seem to get the Dag repo working properly on my CentOS 3 system. I have installed the rpmforge rpm, but this doesn't seem to do much. It does create(I think it created it) the yum.repos.d folder, and I edited the Dag repos file to be enabled. But as I was told before, yum on version 3 does not use this folder. Now I can add the contents of the rpmforge.repo file directly to my yum.conf, and make this work, but is this how it is supposed to be configured? CentOS 4 CPAN problem

Not sure if this is the proper list, but I've spent days browsing for the solution. This only happens on the CentOS machine, so I'll start here. After upgrading CPAN, I get the following: undefined subroutine &Compress::Zlib::gzopen called at /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.5/CPAN/Tarzip.pm line 102. "gzopen" seems to refer to a PHP command. Am I missing a module, or have I hit a bug? KS

ASUS M2V mobo issues

We have 4 systems supported by ASUS M2V mobos with AMD2 cpus on board. No we haven't gotten CentOS of any flavor to work yet. Yes, we did load Fedora Core 6 and it worked, with respect to the SATA driver only. There is a RAID, Audio and LAN driver for Linux that comes on the M2V mobo CD. The audio driver installs and works fine on FC6. I've read many of the messages with respect to setting up the LAN driver. We've had the best success with the 1.0.4.x Attansic driver being provided by Jay Cliburn (kernel 2.6.18.x). He has been very helpful with this. He has a 2.x driver which doesn't appear to work with the 2.6.18 kernel and we haven't gotten any LAN driver to work with the 2.6.19 upgrade so we've fallen back to the FC6 2.6.18.x kernel for now. I took someone's advice and downloaded the bios flash app and tried that approach. I immediately toasted the BIOS chip. I called ASUS in Louisville, KY and they advised that I get a new BIOS chip. The conversation seemed to indicate this was not a new phenomenon. I ordered a new chip for each machine with their newest BIOS. I inserted a new chip in one of the systems and fired it up. Low and behold, the chip is not an MV2 BIOS as before, but an American Megatrends BIOS (2.45.x). It works much better and there are more appropriate settings in the BIOS now for ACPI. The plug and play drivers in CentOS 4.4 may work better with this BIOS as well since there are no onboard LAN settings in the BIOS setup. I'm hoping this means I can use CentOS on these systems now. I'll keep you posted. If you contact the http://helpdesk.asus.com <http://helpdesk.asus.com/> and call their tech support (ext 3). They'll put you in touch with a gal who will ship you the new chip for 5 bucks (5 to 10 day ground). I think it's worth it, so far. David Baker

Okay, so far so good - and many thanks to all who jumped in on this one. Now, we would like to look into making some changes in XFS, but I didn't see a SRPM for the kernel-module-xfs for 42.0.8 - the most recent one is for 42.0.3. Is this usable, or is there somewhere (else?) I can get the SRPM for the 42.0.8 XFS? Good day, I know this is simple but I cant seem to figure this out. I have firefox 2.0 installed and its running fine. The problem is how to get the system defaults to work with it. For instance, if I wanted to install the adobe rpm from their website, how do I get firefox2.0 to prompt me for the default application to install it. Or if I downloaded a .tar.gz and wanted to extract it, how to do get firefox to prompt for that default application. Wireless and kernelproblem on IBM Z61m

Just got almost everything set up on my IBM/Lenovo Z61m and now wondering if there is a graphical tool to set up wireless networking. Also for some reason the kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3 and 2.6.9-42.0.8 hang if rc.sysinit includes the sound initialization. I've tried the plus kernel also and the same thing happens there. The only one working is 2.6.9-22 but on that one networking doesn't. If anyone has any idea of how to start debuging this problem let me know. Clamav .90x that worked for me

I always update clamav from dag but this time it gave me fits. On a clean install of clamav ver .90 that I did...after first completely erasing (rpm -e clamav ...etc for all clamav files), I then installed ver 9.0 and the fix for me was to edit /etc/sysconfig/clamav-milter in 2 places: completely remove the line: dont-log-clean don't just comment it out...in the flags, it has to be removed and also on the socket line ...should start by -obl...edit it to -ol I think also in /etc/crond.conf you should also edit the commented line: #LogClean to LogClean yes I didn't edit /etc/crond.conf on this machine but am fixing to right now...although it works w/out it thx John Rose

I am running up against a less than helpful error message when trying to install php-pear-DB (why people cannot content themselves with all lowercase packages names escapes me, but that is a rant for another time and place). Initialization scripts

I'm trying to create an initialization scrip in the /etc/init.d/. Of course, the one I have is failing! At the top of the other initialization scripts in the same directory, there is are two lines, the chkconfig and description # chkconfig: 2345 55 25 # description: OpenSSH server daemon On the check config line, what are the numbers/attributes that follow? Hi Friends, I am trying to configure a blog on Centos4.0. The blog is written in php and I am not able to run the php applications on this system. php-pear-4.3.9-3.2 php-4.3.9-3.2 php-ldap-4.3.9-3.2 php-mysql-4.3.9-3. Php is installed on the system and in the httpd.conf file I have added index.php for Directory Index but whenever I try to access the blog i get the contents of the file and php is not executing. The permissions on the directory under /var/www/html/blog is set to 777 but still the problem is persisting. What should I do and where to check ? Thanks & Regards Ankush Grover

yum does not update x86_64

Hi, After a successful upgrade CentOS 3.8 i386 to CentOS 4.4 x86_64 and, after cleaning old 3.8 packages, yum does not update the x86_64 packages but just the i386's. The rhn-applet see the x86_64 updates but neither yum nor up2date see them. reboot long uptimes?

Hi, I was just wondering if I should reboot some servers that are running over 180 days? They are still stable and have no problems, also top shows no zombie processes or such, but maybe it's better for the hardware (like ext3 disk checks f.e.) to reboot every six months... btw this uptime really confirms me how stable Centos 4.x really is and so I wonder how long some people's uptimes on the list are ;) rmc

Help regarding DVD burning in multi session

Dear All, I am burning DVD using growisofs command and -M option for multi session burning. Command is executing properly but when I try to mount dvd, it is displaying error and error no is 32. Therefore, I am not able to view the DVD contents. If I try to read same written DVD on Win-XP, I am able to view it all records. Can u tell me where I am making mistake. I used firestarter to get a base configuration, then I used webmin's built-in "Linux firewall" setup module. Hi list, is there any repository on this world where I can stick to and update to a stable and hopefully secure and hopefully long supported version 4.4 of php? EZ publish's software requirements as of the current version tells me that it requires php 4.4 which doesn't meet what Centos 4.4 or its upstream provides. For a certain project I want to use ez publish. Is there any solution you see for that? Install a seperate server for that? (That's the least I wanna do). Or _does_ it work with php 4.3 under centos 4.4? Any experience? Linux on a Thinkpad R40

I've just acquired a use IBM Thinkpad R40 model 2722-GDM. I'm contemplating what to run on it, and longer-term the likely candidates are: Centos 5 SLE{D,S} 10 OpenSUSE 10.2 Kubuntu - the latest. Kubuntu - Long Life (aka 6.04, Dapper, ...) I've booted Knoppix 4 in it and most seems well, including the Atheros Wireless card Windows can't find. The major flies in the ointment are the wireless and the inbuilt modem (Agere something). Google tells me the modem can be made to work, and I'm pretty sure from my Acer that the Atheros wifi also work with some minor fiddling: I've build the driver from source. The problem is, I've done enough fiddling* over the years. I've built enough kernels, attaced enough configuration files with vim, and I want an OS that just works. I'm sure RHEL 5 will not have a driver for my wireless, and I suspect not for my modem. Now the point: do the auxilliary CentOS repos have the missing bits so that I can commit to CentOS4 (or even RHEL5 beta) in the short term, knowing that it's a simple upgrade later? How will CentOS reflect the different RHEL 5 versions? Will it simply merge them into one product, or would one expect to choose different boot media? I ask this because I see SLED doesn't have some of the stuff I want - it's in SLES though, but then SLES doesn't have the madwifi stuff. * There's fiddling and there's fiddling. I'm getting tired of doing the same fiddling all the time; it's time for new adventures. chown command goof up

Basically, what I typed was: chown -R user2:user2 * chown -R user2:user2 .* chown -R user2:user2 *.* ...all in /home. Duh. I forgot which way recursive went. So, I then did: chown -R root:root * chown -R root:root .* chown -R root:root *.* ...this time in / to try and f things. Duh again. Other items need to have other owners & groups. So, how can I fix this? In MacOSX, there is a utility to fix all permissions on the system. Is there a similar item in CentOS? Here's what I originally wanted to do: Started with user1. Got everything setup just right. Then created user2. I wanted to use all the settings, mail, etc. from user1 for user2. My thought was to just copy everything in /home/user1 to /home/user2, then use chown on all of the files. This is where I got myself into this pickle... Any ideas? -- --- David Woyciesjes

Plus I hope this might help some other lost soul since google failed to connect this motherboard to *any* mention of the r1000. I thought I found a great little motherboard in the Biostar I945G-M7 V.2 for a new HD-capable MythTV frontend box I'm putting together. Imagine my dismay when the CentOS 4.4 installer did not recognize the on-board NIC. I haven't had this happen for *years* when installing on new hardware. Biostar's documentation (*and* their tech-support!) states that this M/B has an RTL8100 on-board. There was a recent thread about this, when I asked the same question. Check the archives. We're running 9650 on intel, so I can't be much help on AM2 motherboards. Maybe you can use a PCIe x16 video slot on AM2; not on intel. Unless you need raid 6, or PCI express, the 9550 (PCI-X) would also be a good choice (and IIRC doesn't require a driver replacement for CentOS 4.4). Motherboard + 3ware 9650SE suggestions

Hello everyone! Working on putting a storage server together and wanted to get some input as to what motherboards have been working for people with the 3ware 9650SE-12ML raid board. This is large, bulk storage, 2-tier stuff. This will not be used for realtime editing of video or something, but a gig nic is almost a given I hope. I have an AMD chip available (AM2 slot) but I can get a new chip if needed. Side note on the 3Ware, has anyone gotten it to work on openfiler? Can't figure out how to compile the driver since the kernel is a rev or two behind including the driver. Will use Centos but wonld love to try and get openfiler working on this box. Thanks! Andrew

I'm not sure how to answer that. I have a plain installation of CentOS 4.4 for x86_64 SMP (2.6.9-42.0.3), installed from the DVD. I am now running 2.6.9-42.0.8 built from the rpm package http://mirror.centos.org/centos-4/4/updates/SRPMS/kernel-2.6.9-42.0.8.EL .src.rpm using the fedora rpmdevtools, kernel-smp-devel and the "development tools" packages (from yum or the DVD). New details: I am running an SMP machine and have been using the kernel-2.6.9-x86_64-smp.config config file, which is the one that I can't get to work. So, I figured, what the heck, I'll just use the kernel-2.6.9-x86_64.config config file instead and just turn on SMP in make menuconfig. Voila! It works. There are huge differences between these two config files, and I'm wondering what the heck is messed up in the former such that it doesn't work but the latter does, even on SMP? I have now built about six kernels for this and none of them come up right - they all refuse to acknowledge the keyboard, and the mouse is jerky and erratic. I have checked the config to make sure that USB HID devices are recognized, and that the keyboard is the right one (AT). I have tried unplugging and re-plugging the keyboard, switching their positions on the LCD hub, even plugging directly into the motherboard - nothing works. Is there a bug or other problem in the standard USB driver for 42.0.8? This is frustrating, and it has halted my development. I should be able to build and run the straight distro rpm without this kind of grief, shouldn't I? On my third and fourth builds of the 42.0.8 kernel rpm, when booting, kudzu came up and ran, but the keyboard was somehow not recognized and I had to reboot using the mouse on the login screen (no text appears no matter what I type). I'm using the rpm build strategy from Jim's wiki, which works nicely, but my fallback is a 42.0.3 non-smp kernel. My main question, though, is how did this happen? Is there a config switch or something else I missed? I'm using the base kernel-2.6.9-x86_64-smp.config, and tweaking it to include ext3 and xfs in the kernel (instead of loadable ext3 and no xfs). Why? Well, we need xfs to load so we can find out why it's so damned slow on cached vs. direct i/o. We have some tweaks we put into xfs (current version, using SuSE Linux 9.something) in order to be able to control the way the extents are allocated. We need to be able to do large i/os in large chunks quickly, and that kind of allocation works better than little pieces all over the place. (We're looking at 8Mb chunks and larger.) With direct i/o, we can get around 30-40Mb/s transfer rates, but with cached (i.e., kernel) i/o, we are stuck at 8, which is too slow. It turns out we get better performance from jfs, but we want to use xfs because it is faster with our changes. The main issue here, though, is the failure of CentOS 2.6.9-42.0.8 to recognize the keyboard - why would that happen? I can't seem to get netmask notations to work in /etc/hosts.allow on my Centos 4.4 systems. The docs seem to indicate that network specifications like 192.168.100.0/24 or 192.168.100.0/255.255.255.0 should work. However, I can only get networks specified like 192.168.100. to work. How to prevent reading of an xml in a particular directory from browser in apache on Centos4.4

hi friends, I have configured a HelpDesk Ticketing System on Centos4.4. The problem I am facing is that there is a file called "site.xml" which contains the information about database connections and I don't want ppl to be able to read that file through browser. As per the readme.htm of that software if the below entries will be put in .htaccess then nobody can read the xml through browser. <Files ~ ".xml"> Order allow,deny Deny from all Satisfy All </Files> Even though the above entries are there in .htaccess still I am able to read "site.xml" file. How do I prevent the reading of this file ? HelpDesk Ticketing Software is under /var/www/html/request and .htaccess is also under /var/www/html/request. problem building lvm2-cluster on ia64

I am trying to install GFS on an ia64 cluster. Orinoco mini-pci card not working

Hello All, I have a Dell C800 laptop which boots and runs wonderfully with centos 4.4 except for the wireless card.. The card works fine with other OS'es but not centos.. I have read a ton of postings in various places about conflicts with orinoco_cs and host_ap, etc etc.. I have tried to add blacklist entries to /etc/hotplug/blacklist, I have tried changing the alias in /etc/modules.conf and I have tried to remove and reload modules by hand, all to no avail. I was hoping someone here could give a suggestion as I have spent the too many hours on this thus far.. Thanks in advance, -ed-

I'm using CentOS 4.4. It looks like I can use Sound Juicer (I normally use GNOME) or KAudio Creator in KDE to do this. I've been looking for gstreamer-plugins-mp3 with the Lame MP3 codec, but the files I find quickly are for early versions of Fedora Core. If someone can give me a URL for a version that will work on CentOS 4.4, that will be greatly appreciated. Or, another Application that will do this job better. Goal is to extract selected tracks from music CDs (CDDA), convert them to MP3 and save on the hard drive, for transfer to my cell phone. TIA, Lanny

Hi, I've just installed a CentOS 4.4 and i'm behind a proxy with authentication. Does anyone know the parameters for the environment variable "http_proxy" so i can make a "yum update" ? playing with SO_BROADCAST on centos

I have a small program that I am broadcasting out on port 36 and attempting to receive information back. Using "tcpdump port 36" I can see 2 devices responding to me but I get no data. CentOS 4 Samba - Excel 2002/2003 bug

This is a know issue, fixed on samba 3.0.11 (stock). A patch was also applied to samba on RHEL 3, but was NOT on RHEL 4. This patch (samba-3.0.9-excel.patch) will apply cleanly on samba-3.0.10-1.4E.9, and build without a glinch. xawtv lib issue.

I'm trying to make xawtv work on my CentOS 4.4 i386 boxen. It fails with this error: This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.9-42.0.8.EL) load_codec_info_from_plugin: dlopen failed for /usr/lib/libquicktime/lqt_ffmpeg.so: /usr/lib/libquicktime/lqt_ffmpeg.so: undefined symbol: avcodec_init Segmentation fault I yum installed all the rpms it wanted but still no go. I know someone else was having this same issue and asked in the centos forums. Does anyone know how to resolve this? Thanks, -- -Doc

Centos 4.4 Samba passwd chat

I' just setting up a samba server using centos and get you don't have permission to change you password on the windows xp client. Just wondered what others are using for the passwd chat line in smb.conf. Mine is: *New*password* %nn *Retype*new*password* %nn *passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully* Also tried setting passwd chat debug = Yes but that seems to have no effect in the log output. CentOS 3 vs. CentOS 4 Memory Utilization

I'm helping some folks who have a CentOS 3 i386 server with 512MB of RAM. The output of 'free' looks like: $ free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 511428 497956 13472 0 29868 178280 -/+ buffers/cache: 289808 221620 Swap: 2040244 120644 1919600 The box does not even have X installed... it's basically a web application and email server. They would like to upgrade to CentOS 4, but are concerned that it could be considerably more "memory hungry" and lead to memory starvation (they don't want to add more RAM to the box at this time, although that could be an option down the road). I ran some tests under VMWare with fresh installations of CentOS 3 and CentOS 4 (both using a "minimal install", the same as the server in question) and CentOS 4 seemed to only use 10-25MB more memory. However, it's hard to know how this will translate into real-world performance over time and with the application installed. Does anyone have any experience that would suggest how much more memory a non-X server like this might require? If the application(s) on the server stay the same, do you think we would run into issues where memory would be depleted to a level that would cause concern? Many thanks, KC

Hello, I have the subject mentioned mb and I am trying to install centos 4.4 with sata raid enabled, but linux is not seeing the drives? I tried to load via sata raid driver, no luck there. I guess I could try legacy mode in the bios, but I was hoping there is another way around to load linux with the raid? Thanks....

I read a few days back on the list where the tzdata rpm was to take care of the new DST rules. I run CentOS 3 servers, and did a 'yum update tzdata' , but received a 2006a update of the rpm. problem with CentOS Live CD booting

Hi all, Trying to boot a server with the CentOS 4.4 LiveCD (have a crashed HD that I am trying to recover data from). The CD boots fine, gets past asking for the keyboard type, then asks for a password. It will stay at the login prompt for a few seconds, then whether I type anything or not, it gives a fast error message, something about mixer not attached (it goes by too fast to read the entire thing), the CD spins a bit then I get a blank screen and nothing else. Anyone have any ideas? I have even tried this on with the drives removed. The machine is am HP LP1 Netserver, dual PIII 1ghz processors 3.25gb ram and when installed, SCSI drives. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks Dale

as far as to CentOS 4.4, a work-around solution for Optiplex 745 ICH8 controller is to add "all-generic-ide" as a kernel parameter during installation. The sata disk is recognised as "/dev/hda" , but the disk speed is actually normal, as the followings: hdparm -tT /dev/hda /dev/hda: Timing cached reads: 4776 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2388.36 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 182 MB in 3.02 seconds = 60.29 MB/sec please dont't forget to add "all-generic-ide" again in grub.conf at the first boot. sles 10 (2.6.16.21-0.8-smp) works well on Optiplex 745. So I think a final solution is using RHEL 5 that we should be waiting at this moment. I ask everyone's pardon for my poor english.

Disabling Password authenitication with SSH

Hello everyone, We are setting up a server at work, and we have run into something that I am not sure how to resolve. We have set up sshd (OpenSSH server) on the machine. We have placed ssh keys into each user's home directory that needs to access the system (and they work). We want to disable everyone from logging in, using a password, utilizing ssh keys only to access the system. I have modified /etc/ssh/sshd_conf to have these settings: ChallengeResponseAuthentication no PasswordAuthentication no UsePAM no I then restarted the ssh daemon (/etc/init.d/sshd restart), but it still allows the user to login using their password. What am I missing? Searching google, only turned up the changes that I made above, so I am unclear what else that I need to do. Steps to create a mirrored CentOS system?

Hi all, I am about to re-build one of my boxes with CentOS 4.4 I would like to set it up as a simple mirrored system. The box is a 1U server and has 3 SCSI drive bays. I can use 1 drive as the OS drive and the other 2 for the content (basically websites) or can just use 2 drives and mirror those. What would you folks recommend? Thanks Dale

CentOS 2.6.9-42.0.8 issue - no keyboard after reboot

I did this twice now, although the first couple of builds seemed to work ok, they just weren't configured quite right. On my third and fourth builds of the 42.0.8 kernel rpm, when booting, kudzu came up and ran, but the keyboard was somehow not recognized and I had to reboot using the mouse on the login screen (no text appears no matter what I type). I'm using the rpm build strategy from Jim's wiki, which works nicely, but my fallback is a 42.0.3 non-smp kernel. My main question, though, is how did this happen? Is there a config switch or something else I missed? I'm using the base kernel-2.6.9-x86_64-smp.config, and tweaking it to include ext3 and xfs in the kernel (instead of loadable ext3 and no xfs). Why? Well, we need xfs to load so we can find out why it's so damned slow on cached vs. direct i/o. We have some tweaks we put into xfs (current version, using SuSE Linux 9.something) in order to be able to control the way the extents are allocated. We need to be able to do large i/os in large chunks quickly, and that kind of allocation works better than little pieces all over the place. (We're looking at 8Mb chunks and larger.) With direct i/o, we can get around 30-40Mb/s transfer rates, but with cached (i.e., kernel) i/o, we are stuck at 8, which is too slow. It turns out we get better performance from jfs, but we want to use xfs because it is faster with our changes. The main issue here, though, is the failure of CentOS 2.6.9-42.0.8 to recognize the keyboard - why would that happen? Thanks. mhr

SATA controller Dell Optiplex 745

Hi, The CentOS 4.4 installation doesn't work on a Optiplex 745 because it doesn't support the sata controller. Is there a known work-around?
