What is the diffrence between port filtering and packet filtering ?

Hi all, I want to set up a firewall on CentOS 4.4. I wnat to know the diiffrence between port filtering and packet filtering ? Can iptables do both? Is there another pkg better than this? if so, pls let me know. The purpose of this is to setup a firewall for production use. -- Thank you Indunil Jayasooriya

mod_perl and httpd2

I've got httpd and mod_perl installed, but I seem to have an application that requires part of mod_perl that doesn't seem to be properly installed into perl, notably, the 'Apache' portion. To 'fix' this, cpan would like to install either mod_perl-1.29, or alternatively to install mod_perl-2.0.2. 1.29 doesn't seem smart, and 2.0.2 absolutely will not install over the top of 1.99-16. I've looked for a package using: yum list available | grep -i perl yum list available | grep -i apache And I don't get anything decent in terms of output. Is anybody else dealing with Security Metrics?

Seems that some of the credit card processors demand the use of Security Metrics to test their web hosting for meeting a fairly good security standard. First, it doesn't matter if they do online credit card processing or not, just credit card processing period. This makes some sense, as someone could hack in a form pretending to ask for this information... so there is at least some risk.. and we all no credit card companies ultimately want to achieve 0 risk. ;) Anyway, the frustration is this and early on their reports even talked about it. Redhat doesn't follow the normal numbering system for a lot of their security updates for various packages. PHP is a great example of the time. Security Metrics says I must be running 5.1 due to exploits in earlier versions due to CANXXXX whereas Redhat has clearly addressed the issue, sent out a patch and generally we have it installed 2 to 6 months before SM starts a failing process. ---- The real question ---- Basically, I was wondering if there were many of you 'jumping through these same hoops'? If there are, perhaps we as a group could do something to get them to check for CentOS and then look for RHEL versions in hopes of ending these hassles. ---- end real question ---- I have found that by contacting SM, they will make a correction to a test once they know what you are running, but this seems to come up with each and every test. And the testing is done by domain, not by server, so you have to deal with each domain tested with the exact same crap.. which amounts to jumping through a hoop. Also, I've come to realize that some of what they ask that you do, equates to having your locked car in the driveway with the keys in your pocket.. this fails... But, if you put those keys in a different locked car beside it in the driveway and put the keys to that car in your pocket, it passes. Very sad...... And never once have they considered talking about the very basics like a good password policy. :( One other thing that bothers me about them is they 'sell appliances'. So, if your server/host can't pass or doesn't want to deal with it, we can 'sell' them something, making more money which to me seems like a conflict of interest for someone operating under the guise of security.

I was wondering if the new bind update is going smoothly for those who have done it? I've been a little hesitant to run it yet as the last time forced a bit of time fixing things. Boot your system with the 'noapic' flag. Slow clock on CentOS 4.4 in a VMware VM

I'm running a CentOS 4.4 VM on a Windows XP host with VMware Server, and have the problem that my clock runs too slow (it happens in VMware Workstation as well). It loses between 30 and 45 seconds every minute! This is a known problem and can be fixed by adding "nosmp noapic nolapic" to the boot command according to VMware tech note ID 1420. However, despite adding these options as well as some others (acpi=off pci=noacpi clock=pit) and turning off a bunch of daemons (cpuspeed, irqbalance, etc.) I still have a slow clock. Hi , I am ruuning Senmail with MailScanner on CentOS 4.4. It has updated to kernel 2.6.9-42.0.8.EL from its past kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL. Now the Server can not boot up and gives the below error. mkrootdev: label / not found Mounting root filesystem mount: error 2 mouting ext3 switchroot: mount failed: 22 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! But I can boot up from its last kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL. I have booted it up from that kernel. But I wnat to rectify that new kernel error in order to boot from that kernel. USB-HDD cannnot connect automatically

Hi all, I got a USB-HDD, but it doesn't looked like connect and cannot mount it just after PC boot. But insert and remove a usb cable from PC, it connect (with hotplug?) Problems loading CentOS 4.4 on ASUS M2N-MX mobo

I have a brand new ASUS MB model M2N-MX which is giving me issues when installing Centos 4.4 64 bit I initially had problems with finding the SATA drives but I resolved that issue by simply selecting the NVIDIA SATA (sata_nv)driver from the list of drivers during the initial install. The install seemed to go fine after that as the installer uses the Generic VESA video driver during the install, however, upon the restart after the install, the server then completely locks up. I can only assume it is at the point of loading the video driver although I really don't know what CentOS loads after the "acivating local loopback" section, because that is where it freezes on the screen. I'm thinking that the install to the SATA drive went well since it boots from the drive though it doesn't exactly boot completely. I have tried reinstalling several times already with the same negative results. Would appreciate any help that someone could offer in getting this working with this new MB. Named Troubles

I did a CentOS 4.4 fresh server install. Using it to run Squid. Named is also running but I get this error. [root@sj ~]# /etc/init.d/named status rndc: connection to remote host closed This may indicate that the remote server is using an older version of the command protocol, this host is not authorized to connect, or the key is invalid. [root@sj ~]# /etc/init.d/named restart Stopping named: [ OK ] Starting named: [ OK ] [root@sj ~]# All I want it a caching DNS server for Squid and a few hundred computers to use. Is this error going to be an issue? If so, how do I fix it? Matt

Sorry for the extra info required, but I had digest mode turned on and wouldn't have received the mailing till tomorrow. I have since updated the data manually, but after 'yum update tzdata' was run, the zdump -v for EST5EDT and America/New_York all still showed a date of April 1, instead of March 11. After manually fixing, it is correct. This was mostly a question about why yum provided a tzdata that was for a 2006a rpm instead of the 2006g or later when I did the yum. Hola a todos... Compile openLDAP y habilite --enable-overlays como modulos.. Entonces ppolicy.la se creo.. pero cuando en el archivo de configuracion de ldap coloco lo siguiente funciona: # Load dynamic backend modules: modulepath /usr/local/libexec/openldap moduleload ppolicy.la # password policy overlay ppolicy ppolicy_default "cn=Standard Policy,ou=Policies,dc=jovenesdemocracia,dc=org" Y cuando trato de levantar me sale el siguiente error: overlay "ppolicy" not found Y cuando comento overlay ppolicy y levanto de nuevo ldap me funciona bien.. Entonce mi pregunta es si ppolicy esta como modulo no hay necesidad de colocar en el archivo de configuracion el parametro overlay ppolicy. Espero sus comentarios...

Hello, I may need to set up soon a Linux VPS, to be used almost exclusively for handling email (as in "2GB of disk space, 2GB/month of bandwidth would be surely enough") with a fully customized postfix/procmail/dovecot setup. I'd prefer to use Centos, which I already use and know. One reason why I'm asking this here is that I'd really like to be sure, before I go for it, that the provider not only _offers_ Centos VPS but also actually _know_ Centos, so they can help if some problems with their setup comes up. Now, for several reasons I am only interested in companies which are 100% based in the European Union (both the legal entity and the datacenter) _and_ speak English with their customers, thanks. Another requirement is that it has to be a provider which: * either doesn't host anonymizers, adult content and warez altogether, or * if it does, it does it on a completely different set of IP addresses the reason is exclusively technical, ie availability: I have already seen where I work the webmail of several, absolutely family-safe websites blocked because, as it turns out, they sit on the same IP address or IP block used by adult/warez sites. It may be stupid, but that's the way it is, and I can't control it. Do you know any good and reliable provider with this profile? Any feedback is welcome, either on list or privately. 1) I'm actually not building a custom kernel per se, just one from the standard 2.6.11.4 with our configuration. I may be adding a custom driver, but unless I can get the standard kernel to boot,... 2) I have been told that after 2.6.11.4, support for the Infiniband driver is dropped, and we need that. If this is not the case, I would be delighted to know that and proceed accordingly. I'm not sure, but I believe that CentOS version 5 will not happen soon enough for what we need. Ladies and Gents, Having a rough time with nfsv4... Trying to mount via NFS v4 to get ACL support... I am getting this when i try to mount: NFS mount version 4 s not supported. here are my fstab options: nfs rw,hard,intr,exec,acl,mountvers=4 Nfs clients installed: nfs-utils-1.0.6-70.EL4 nfs-utils-lib-1.0.6-3 system-config-nfs-1.2.8-1 I presume I need to upgrade... how would I go about doing so? Anyone doing Centos on SLI 4 monitor workstation? I am currently building a workstation out with Dell for this. I hope to use CentOS (x86_64) on it. Any advice or words of wisdom would be GREAT! This will be my first attempt at SLI. I have done 4 screens but AGP/PCI combos only. This one we need hardcore 3D ability on all of them. Increasing existing partition and LVM size

I have a disk on which CentOS is installed and running. The disk partitions look like this: Disk /dev/sda: 42.9 GB, 42949672960 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 5221 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/sda2 14 1044 8281507+ 8e Linux LVM What I would like to do is increase the size of the second partition to be the entire disk, and then grow the logical volume(s) and the file systems on it. BTW, this is all on a VMware virtual disk, so I really can't screw things up, as I have a copy of the VMDK files and can start over again (and again, and again...). The disk was originally 8GB, and I just resized it with vmware-vdiskmanager. I have tried to use parted to resize the partition, but I get the message "Error: Could not detect file system.", and I can't find a way to resize the partition with fdisk and sfdisk. Unablce to open VNC

I have vnc working on my server when I am logged into that server. If I run vncviewer, I have a copy of the Desktop. Hwever, if I SSH into the server, I get an error. imap pop3 servers

I'm doing a complete upgrade of a server which I was using uw-imap for the imap/pop4 daemons.(This was an old RH 7.2 system and has been upgraded to CentOS 4.4 64bit) I notice there isn't an rpm at any of the repositories for this. I do pop before smpt for the remote users I have and also use procmail for calling spamc from SpamAssassin. Is there some place I can get uw's imap or do I need to settle for using something like Dovecot? (Which doesn't support procmail AFAICT) Also I did do a search and read the wiki for CentOS and just about everyplace I could think of. I found several things, but not much. I am looking for tutorials about: How to setup postfix with centos, dovecot, creating rpm, apache,bind I will teach some unix basics to my students (Oh God!) but I'm a lazy teacher and I don't want to write from scratch. I'm having an odd behavior with vsftp on all CentOS 4 servers... maybe 3 too, but I'm not on those much. I am transferring in port mode as I've never managed to get passive to work with a firewall running. Anyway, this is what happens. During normal transfers with few files.. it works perfectly. During the transfer of like a large website with hundreds of files in various directories, from a fast connection, vsftp stalls out with a high degree of consistency. I thought this was happening only when I was doing this locally through the intranet, but I have now discovered our outside users are having the same problem when they are on a hi speed connection. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks, John Hinton

Problem with 2.6.11.4 kernel and e1000 driver

I get the following results when I try to load the 2.6.11.4 kernel with an Intel e1000 driver (the one that comes in the kernel source): 1) If I build it into the kernel, nothing shows up at all. 2) If I build it as a loadable module, I get errors on eth0 and eth1 that the MAC address is different than expected, and it ignores the controller. KDE oops

I realize this may technically be "off topic", but I have made all the icons on my KDE desktop disappear. It is something in the KDE setup in my /home/tmiller/... setup, as my wife's icons work fine. It is probably the result of something I deleted or moved in moving my home directory from Mandriva 2006 to Centos 4. The files are all in /home/tmiller/Desktop, but they don't show up on the desktop. Neither do the device icons, or any other icons. I have the Configure-Desktop -> Behavior -> General -> Show icons on desktop box checked, but the don't show. I hope someone will recognize my problem and be able to help me with 10 seconds of typing. If no one knows what I have done I will quietly go looking for a KDE forum or mailing list to plead my case in. Ted Miller Indiana

Recommendations for Lexmark Z11 driver install?

I've "inherited" an old Lexmark Z11 and would like to plug it in to my CentOS 4 box as a second printer. I shut down, hooked it up to the parallel port, rebooted, and hwbrowser recognizes it on /dev/lp0, so I ran through setting it up as a queue with printconf-gui. However, printing the test page fails because the renderer "lz11.foomatic" is not found (details below for anyone who wants to read that far). A quick look at linuxprinting.org leads me to the lz11 project. I've downloaded lz11-V2-1.2 which contains lz11.foomatic, but after reading through the installer shell script I'm not exactly happy about what it's going to do to my rpm-based cups install (clobber files in the foomatic directories and drop a whole lot of utility scripts in /usr/bin, among other things). Any advice on how best to proceed would be appreciated: What's the least disruptive way to do the upgrade? As an aside, why does printconf-gui allow one to select a printer for which the driver is not installed? Migrate RHEL3 to Cent3

I have several RHEL3 WS machines that were installed here running as servers and their RHN subscriptions were never kept up. Now that I have become responsible for them I would like to move them to CentOS as I can keep them updated as needed. Some of them I can simply migrate to new machines, but a few I can not. Is it possible to simply upgrade a RHEL3 to the latest CentOS 3? If possible, once I have it to the latest Cent 3 can I then further upgrade the machine to the latest CentOS 4? -Thank you

LVM on large partitions greater than 2TB

I want to create one large LVM volume on the 2.5TB device. I seem to be able to create an LVM physical volume on the whole device, but I've read that it's better to create a single large partition for LVM as the existence of the partition informs other apps that the disk is in use which prevents accidental corruption of the LVM volume. Creating a large partition of this size under Centos is proving to be surprisingly difficult. I am unable to get fdisk to see more that 513GB on the whole unit, and once I create one 513GB partition, I can't create any additional partitions ("no sectors available"). I've read that fdisk has trouble with large partitions and that the GNU parted program should be used instead. Problem here is that GNU parted doesn't know about many file systems and doesn't know anything about LVM. So, following some steps on the LVM Howto, I used parted to create a large ext2 partition, then used fdisk to change the type to 8e for LVM. Once I do this, I see that the partition is now 2TB in size -- close, but .5 TB short. Why is this so difficult? How should large partitions be created under Centos? Any help is appreciated. Tom

APM and suspend to swap

I have been delving into how to get this HP NC4010 to suspend. I think the practice of just closing the unit for 15+ min inside my backpack as I move to the next meeting is what cooked my drive... So it seems that Debian users have been successful with APM: http://www.proulx.com/~bob/nc4000/ and http://www.gag.com/~bdale/nc4000/ So my Centos related questions are: I need to turn acpi=off in the boot so I can turn on apm. How DO I turn on apm. I have a large enough swap drive. It is an LVM drive of 2Gb and I have 768Mb memory. The example given is: vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-1+8-686 root=/dev/hda5 ro acpi=off resume2=swap:/dev/hda1 My swap drive is: /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 what do I do above? and my root is /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol01 There are references to compling the kernel. Do I have to do that? Is that mkinitrd? what suspend command do I use? What do I loose giving up acpi? thanks. I am leaving for the RSA conference in San Fran tomorrow morning, so I would really like to get this going...

Centos 4.0 updates repo & local repository creation

Hello all I used Centos 4.0 iso to setup my systems and updated till date. I assume they are equivalent to systems created with Centos 4.4 Now, I am planning to setup a full local repository of Centos updates, extras, centosplus etc. (not isos...as I intend to download isos only when Centos 5 becomes available. Please advise what directories I should download for my local repository, as the download tree has updates, extras, centosplus repos for 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4. & 4.4 & so on. Please advise the appropriate rsync commands, so that I can use it, so as to exclude isos and include the rest. A smal comment on how the repos relate to version numbers would be really appreciated. Clock Drifts Off

I installed CentOS 4.4 32 bit on a dual core AMD64 motherboad. Its a Tyan Tomcat K8E motherboard with socket 939. The clock keeps drifting off like 5+ minutes an hour. Run ntpupdate hourly to compensate. Any ideas why or how to fix? Matt

As I understand, this will be run by each user after login. How can I make this runs at least once a month and delete all users message with age more than one month for example using crontab? I am using Postfix, MailScanner, SpamAssassin, Courier IMAP/POP3, ClamAV and CentOS4.4 as mail server. If you need further input, please just let me know. Thanks in advance for help. broadcom 802.3ad

Does anyone have some tips for setting up Broadcom's 802.3AD support or just getting their driver compiled / installed? First off, I noticed redhat claims the broadcom bcm5708 driver has been added to the rhel4 kernel. But I don't see /proc/net/nicinfo which broadcom claims the driver creates when it's successfully initialized. So, I'm trying to build the driver based on the source files downloaded from Broadcom: I downloaded their source rpm, installed it and now trying to build a binary rpm (pwd is /usr/src/redhat) # rpmbuild -bb SPECS/bnx2.spec it starts off OK, and then bombs make -C SUBDIRS=/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/bnx2-1.4.43b modules make: *** SUBDIRS=/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/bnx2-1.4.43b: No such file or directory. Has anyone downloaded firefox 2.0 and tried it? I just did. I am very confused. I download the firefox-2.0.tar.gz Untared it and the readme.txt was one sentence. nothing useful. There is no install**** anything. The URL the readme.txt mentions to the release notes, does have a "install" link, but it doesnt say anything about actually installing. All it says in one sentence is "install firefox 2 will overwrite your existing install". I am stuck.... Has anyone else installed firefox 2 and can share. I know there is seamonkey now but it is broken for the functionality I need. I was hoping it is fixed in firefox 2.0. Thanks, Jerry

All, Apple has released an open source zero config dns application http://developer.apple.com/opensource/internet/bonjour.html Has anyone used this on centos? I am trying and I cant figure out how to have it provide me with a list of all devices that will respond to port 80 as an example. Or simple a list of all devices on the network that respond would be ok even. Anyone used this tool and know how to do that? Or better yet any native centos commands I'm not aware of? Jerry

I've wrote my own script to perform it (openssl command line based): it's a good way to underdstand concepts, but a little bit difficult to maintain and extend... After googling a bit, I found PHPki (http://www.sf.net/projects/phpki/) that is nicely web-based (php) but unfortunately, It does not handle CSR. What tool do you use to manage your PKI ? Default router on different subnet - Is it possible?

In the below example normal Internet traffic is routed as shown from node1 to internet1. The node1 defaultrouter points to the firewall and the firewall points to internet1. For node2 is it possible to add it's own link to the Internet passing through the same default router and firewall as node1. The links do not need to failover or provide any redundancy. node1---node1 defaultrouter--firewall--internet1(default route node1) node2--/ \-internet2(default route node2) I know a default route should be on the same local subnet but is there any routing trickery (or maybe iptables) I can do on node2 to get around this. NIS home automount feature

Howdy, I setup a test NIS domain that i'd like to test the home automounting feature so basically i done this; -Setup the NIS server and domain, make changes on Makefile to include auto.master, auto.home -had the client successfully connected to new NIS domain. on NIS/NFS server i added this on /etc/auto.master file; /home /etc/auto.home on /etc/auto.home i have this; * nfsserver:/home Now my problem is, how would i force/setup the client that it would use the auto{master,home} files on NIS server rather than using the locally same files, pointers and correction greatly appreciated. /joseph

defaultPref() does not work in firefox

I'm needing to force some settings system wide for Firefox. However, I am finding that using lockPref() in firefox.js silently fails... and causes all directives that come after it in the file to be ignored. An strace shows that it reads the firefox.js file in its entirety and then goes on about its business reading other config files and then terminates for no apparent reason. Is anyone else observing this? I'm running Centos 4.4 x86 with firefox-1.5.0.9-0.1.el4.centos4. Thanks, Steve

Problems with new kernels

Hello, I have been having problems using kernels since 2.6.9-34.0.2. After updating to a new kernel, my system runs, I'm guessing, 6 - 8 hours fine, then becomes unresponsive. For example, I installed the latest kernel the other evening, reboot for the changes and by morning, the system appears to be locked up. Typing 'yum update' takes about 10 minutes to execute. Not sure whats going on here but I'm stuck using 2.6.9-34.0.2. This is a centos 4.4 system on an IBM NetVista, 2.53 Ghz, 1GB RAM. I have noticed when there is a kernel update, it downloads the huge memeory and smp files. TIA Eddie

performance lost in using a software raid array with only 1 disk

Is there any performance lost in using a software raid array with only 1 disk? I was wanting to use the mdadm monitoring tools to monitor the machines single disk drive for failures and such. Is there any performance hit for such a setup? Some machines have RAID some machines dont (for me) and I was thinking about a common setup. Also then if I want in the future I can actually just add the second disk and now I have RAID. Jerry

Accessing an external USB disk

I was able to remove the NTFS partition and repartition the HD as a type Linux (83). Next I created the ext3 file system. If I reboot with the USB drive attached, the boot process hangs, however if I turn off the drive, boot and then turn it on, all is fine. # cat /etc/fstab shows the drive, but I am not sure how to use it for a backup nor do I know how to access it. 3.8 failure message

Hi all, I have a relatively idle Centos 3.8 server that I'd neglected to upgrade in quite some time (I think a 1ghz P3) on an old Intel 815 board. The OS has been regularly updated and probably was current as of a week or two ago. It was mostly a playground for a couple of vanity domains so when it went down I didn't really give it top priority. Today I had someone wander over and look at the screen and see if they could bounce the power and have it wake back up. I don't think I've ever seen this particular situation before: The last msg on the screen is from the boot loader "total huge TLB memory allocated, 0" and thats it. It won't boot. It stops dead. I'm assuming it's just some sort of mainboard/memory/processor type of failure since it does manage to find the boot loader. Just thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions before I drive a couple of hours with my bag of parts. I periodically image the drive and copy it to another box on the same lan segment so at least it should be easy to rebuild once the machine is stable again. :) Any suggestions/insights would be appreciated. Problem with xen on Centos-4.4?

I am running a Xen installation on a Centos-4.4 based test box, my desktop unit, and I am having intermittent problems installing certain pieces of software. Some time back I posted to this list regarding my inability to install Adobe Acrobat on this unit and was advised to essentially repackage the software and try again. This is beyond my present means of knowledge or time to acquire same and so left undone. Now however I am having remarkably similar problems with two official Centos-4.4 updates, xorg-x11-xfs and openssh-server. Can anybody give me some clues as to what is going on and how I might correct this. CentOS: scanning

Hi! I've been using v.-4.4 since last Oct, and I'm quite satisfied, *except* for *one* thing: I can't scan! Both kooka and xsane report "no devices available." That doesn't affect printing, but every time I have to scan something, I've to go back to Mandriva or Ubuntu. I've had this HP psc-2410 for a couple of years. If I were to lose my main hard drive, I would like to have the opportunity to do the same as I can do using Windows: restore from my USB and have a working system. If I were to rsync everything on the main drive (excluding the backup drive, of course and a few other directories) to my USB drive, could I restore using some CD based version of Linux e.g. Knoppix? Can't install Centos 4.4 64bit

Hi, I just built a new computer and wanted to install Centos 4.4 64bit on it. Specs AMD x2 64bit 3800+ EE Asus M2NBP-VM CSM 1 GIG RAM 60GIG HD IDE I can get it to boot from the cd and select language etc, and then it askes where the install is coming from. Cd, hd, network etc. Whats up it boots from the cd but then says its not there when it running from the cd. Any suggestions? Thanks Scandog -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Mounting a LVM partition on a USB attached drive

I have one of those USB hard drive cases, and I have my old hard drive in it. Eventhough I have made the changes to mount multiple USB drives in one USB device (works fine for my media play with internal and SD drive), I am only getting the first partition (/Boot (2)) automounted. df does not show anything more about the drive, but the gnome hardware browser shows all three partitions on the drive: /dev/sda sda1 ext3 sda2 linux-swap sda3 LVM Physical Volume Naturally it is sda3 that I want to access. So far my google searches have come up empty.

Compiling CentOS kernel

When I download a kernel from kernel.org I can compile it making config and make bzimage, but in some case I tried to make the kernel for a specific CPU in CentOS kernel source and I can not compile the CentOS kernel. I'm a noob with CentOS so I appreciate your valuable time and patience with my silly questions. Hopefully, I won't be a noob much longer :-) I'm using CentOS 4.4 and Plesk 8.1 on my Apache web server. I installed netPBM via yum: # yum install netpbm-devel.i386 # yum install netpbm-progs I saw no errors, and when I run "yum list installed" I see the packages. The problem is, my customers' programs can't find netPBM and neither can I. I've been looking for a file named "netpbm" or "netPBM" and I can't find it in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin. I updated my "locate" database, then I ran "# locate netpbm" but still found nothing. I tried "which netpbm", "whereis netpbm", and everything I could think of but I still can't find it. I've tried restarting Apache to no avail. Can anyone tell me what's going on? What's frikken the path to netPBM? Is there something else I need to do, after running "yum install (pkg)"? Changing the file type

I have a USB external drive that has not been used with my Linux system. The HD is from a Windows system, so it has a NTFS file system. My manuals speak of the fdisk -t command to change the file type, however that does not appear to be available with Centos. Could someone refer me to the steps I should use to change the file type, change to partition if necessary, create a Linux file system and then set it up so that when I plug in the USB drive it will automatically mount (if possible).
