'gnome-daemon-settings' Doesn't Start When Attempting To Make Changes

All, So here's the issue: The system - a Dell Precision M4800 The OS - CentOS 6.9, ver. 2.6.32-696.28.1 The problem - Whenever the user tries to make system changes (display, mouse orientation, etc.), the gnome-settings-daemon pops up and says it can't run, and the changes never occur. Yum dependency failure installing latest LibreOffice

I've been bashing my head on the wall for 2 or 3 hours for something that should be (and has been, in the past) simple. Trying to install the latest LibreOffice downloaded from Libreoffice.org. I tried installing the version I had previously been using, and I get the equivalent error when trying that too. Back when I installed it, I got no such errors. Note that I am now on the 7.5 version, 7.5 (1804), and when I previously installed 6.0 I was still on the previous release, so I wonder if yum has become broken during the 7.5 run-up. A lot of time had transpired here and I was getting a little warm under the collar, so I tried: rpm -ivh *.rpm which worked just fine. voila! I did this with the older version, but I wanted the newer one, so I did "yum remove libreoffice\* libobasis\*" and it complained about the RPM database being modified, but it did the deed. then I tried installing 6.4.0.2 again, with yum, which still gives the same error. Once again, rpm is my friend. Anybody got any ideas what's wrong with my system? (or is yum broken??) thanks in advance! CentOS6: HELP! EFI boot fails after replacing disks...

OK, I wanted to replace the 500G disks in a Dell T20 server with new 2TB disks. The machine has 4 SATA ports, one used for the optical disk and three for the hard drives. It is set up with /dev/sda and /dev/sdb with each three partitions: 1 -- VFAT (for EFI) 2 -- ext4 (for /boot) 3 -- LVM /dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2 are a mirror raid (/dev/md0) /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3 are a mirror raid (/dev/md1), with LVM on top of that. /dev/sdc is a disk containing one file system and mostly used by AMANDA for backup (it has a "virtual" tape changer). This morning I shut the machine down and pulled [the 500G] /dev/sdb and installed a new 2TB disk as a new /dev/sdb. Partitioned it (with parted) to be much like /dev/sda (except partition 3 is way bigger). I added the new /dev/sdb2 to /dev/sda2 (boot raid set) and dd'ed /dev/sda1 to /dev/sdb1. I then created a new RAID set (degraded) with /dev/sdb3, used pvcreate on it, used vgextend to add it to the system volume group, then used pvmove to move the extents from the old disk to the new disk. Meanwhile I partitioned a second 2TB disk using a USB SATA dock and copied the old 500G /dev/sdc1 to the new 2TB disk. So far so good. Then I shut the machine down, swapped in the new backup [2TB] disk and pulled the old system [500G] disk and installed the third new [2TB] disk. The system won't boot that way. It seems there is something in the UEFI (secure boot) logic that wants the original disk, even if everything is moved over. I ended up putting the original /dev/sda in. The machine boots and is using the new system disk (a raid array in degraded mode). What is the magic to fix this? I tried to run efibootmgr, but it wants a model named efivars loaded, but there is no such module available. yum hangs and results in problems

My live mail server was due an update so I ran yum update All seemed file so I told it to proceed. HOwever it then hung for over 30 minutes. I stopped the update and tried again. It complained about problems with the update, so I tried yum --skip-broken -y update which then hung at a different place. After some Googling I tried yum-complete-transaction and package-cleanup --cleandupes both of which failed. I then using my "Microsoft" head I thought I'd try rebooting to see if that fixes it. This of course was a big mistake as my server now crashes on bootup. I have managed to get it back up and running by selecting a version of the kernel that is 3 versions old. Mailing list config question / minor rant

The centos(a)centos.org seems to be *uniquely* configured to hold messages with a (single) CC to self. ALL of the other mailing lists I am on have no problem with a CC to self. My mailer software is configured to CC to myself. This is *only* a problem with the CentOS list. Why is this? Yes, I know it is *normal* to configure Mailman to hold messages with a *long* CC list, since that is a common tactic by spammers. But a CC of one? Really? Various applications freeze regularly since CentOS 7.5 update

Hi, since we have upgraded to CentOS 7.5 (from CentOS 7.4), we experience frequent, but not reproducible, freezes of various applications: Thunderbird, Firefox, LibreOffice. Usually the application process keeps running with PPID 1 w/o being killable (not even with SIGKILL). Freezes of Thunderbird are usually followed by Firefox crashing a few minutes later. The only possible solution we found is a complete workstation reboot :-(. Other problems are that many Gnome extensions are not working any more and also cannot be installed from extensions.gnome.org any more and logging in via gdm (LDAP, homedirectories on NFS share) is considerably slower than with 7.4. I don't know if these issues are related, if they are symptoms of a more global problem and I am at a loss on how to debug them, as they appear from time to time but not not reproducibly.. Any hints or reports of own experiences are highly appreciated. Cheers frank

Clone a custom CentOS 7 desktop using G4L over FTP

Hi, A couple months ago, I migrated our local school (two servers, 20 desktop clients) from Slackware 14.1 to CentOS 7. The desktop clients are running a customized lightweight desktop based on Xfce: https://blog.microlinux.fr/poste-de-travail-xfce-centos-7/ Home directories are all on the server, and authentication is centralized. Everything works fine so far. With Slackware I had found a neat trick to install the desktop clients. First I installed and configured one single client PC from start to finish. The I zeroed all the unused sectors on the disk, using something like this: # dd if=/dev/zero of=/0bits bs=20M ; rm -f /0bits Then I sent the disk image to a local FTP server using G4L (Ghost4Linux). On all the other desktops PCs, I could then "import" the G4L image, and the system was ready to use. Under Slackware, the only thing I had to make sure was to remove the one bit of hardcoded system information before uploading the image: # rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules Now I tried to do this with CentOS, but I failed miserably. The system wouldn't even start, since GRUB uses UUIDs and not /dev/sdX like Slackware's bone-headed LILO boot manager. So here's my question to the guru admins on this list. On a standard CentOS desktop, what would I have to tweak in order to be able to clone my system bit for bit, as is ? Vsftpd vs. iptables firewall script

Hi, I'm currently setting up a local FTP server, to receive disk images sent with G4L (Ghost4Linux). This server has been running Slackware Linux before, and the Vsftpd setup was relatively simple. With CentOS things seem to be slightly different, so I'm currently trying to work things out. For the moment, two things seem to be creating problems, the simple iptables firewall and SELinux. When I disable the firewall and SELinux, Vsftp works as expected. So far so good. Now let's tackle this one dragon at a time. First the firewall. I'm starting with a very simple firewall script that looks somewhat like this. I'm linking to the template, I won't copy/paste the whole thing here. https://github.com/kikinovak/centos-7-server-lan/blob/master/config/firewal… Under Slackware, the iptables rule for a local FTP server looked like this: modprobe ip_conntrack iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -i $IFACE_LAN --dport 21 -j ACCEPT I tried this, but to no avail. Can't connect to my server. I googled a bit, and I found out that there seem to be quite many different answers about the subject of "how do I configure my firewall for Vsftpd". Any suggestions ? Hi, Can the updated files added to the Centosplus repo be sent to the announcement list please? I can't find them announced in any of the other lists. Related to that, a new kernel was released to the Centosplus repo, kernel-plus-3.10.0-862.2.3.el7.centos.plus, but perf and python-perf were not updated for the new kernel. New mail server slow connecting to web server

Having successfully killed my (Centos 7) mail server I have had to build a new one. Thankfully I had a server build that I was about to start configuring as my new web server. I appear to have set everything up okay, Exim, SpamAssassin, ClamAv, Dovecot, Postgresql, httpd etc. Everything appears fine apart from when I try to connect to my web server. Whatever tried to connect suffers from a delay, and either times out or works eventually. I started off with problems connecting Exim to Postgresql on the web server. I then found that I couldn't connect using psql, or using Perl DBD-Pg. I then found I couldn't SSH or SCP, dispite them both being on the same subnet. The more I use the new system, better it appears to be, but the delay is still there. name resolution isn't the problem as I can nslookup both ways without problems, and specifying IP addresses makes no difference. For testing I have disabled the firewall and selinux and that made no difference. If I try to connect the other way there is no delay, but I cannot access the Postgresql server on my new mail server from the web server. Anyone got any ideas?

CentOS 7 system unsable after "yum update" (with some errors on the way)

God dag, I've been trying to run a "yum update" (without additional arguments) to install the latest system updates on my CentOS 7 machine. It's no going so well. What happens is this: 1. The process gets stuck a couple of places as a "post" script or similar tries to run "dbus-send"; the problem looks awfully similar to what's described in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1186018. More specifically, this happens on installation of package "setroubleshoot" and "avahi". As a workaround, I'm using a manual kill to get rid of the hung process. 2. There is a similar hang related to "systemctl try-restart". This happens on "wpa_supplicant" clean-up. 3. When I restart the system after the installation is done (with work-arounds), it won't boot properly - I don't get a login screen or console login prompt. I notice two error messages on the boot console: Failed to start login service Failed to start WPA supplicant daemon I've tried the operation twice with the same result. First time was just after the release of CentOS 7.5, I believe. I've done similar upgrades before that, too, and they've completed without problems. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas what I can do to make the system usable again, besides restoring from back-up (as I'm doing now)? There is info on the net that suggests that the problem is related to SELinux and that a relabel operation and/or policy change would help, but I tried all sorts of things related to that the first time around, and nothing seemed to help. (I was working partly in rescue mode booted from an installer USB and partly in single user mode, which does work.) TIA - Toralf

using Skype on C-7

Hi I've whined about this before, but now I feel the overwhelming urge to whine some more. Forgiveness begged... :) I've spent some very frustrating times trying to get a microphone to work when doing skype calls. According to the various sound tools available on Centos all the various mics I have (built into webcam, analog headset, USB headset)produce sound just fine. but when using skype there are too many different knobs one can turn to actually make it work. There's PulseAudio, Alsamixer, and for me, since I use the Mate desktop, the Mate Volume Control, which can also be accessed by a right-click on the speaker icon in the top panel. then in skype I get a list of 5 (FIVE!) different audio input devices. I just spent a frustrating time trying to join in a daily scrum at my office (I'm out of the office today) wherein I could not get outgoing audio to work. afterwards I tried more things and managed to get ONE of the 3 to work, the one built into the webcam. to do that I had to make the following settings: choose Input tab in the Mate Volume Control, then move the volume slider most of the way over to the right. In Alsa Mixer, set front mic to 70 and front mic boost to 100. In Pavucontrol, enable webcam audio input, and crank it way up. in Skype, choose "default device", as distinct from "Default Device", or the other three choices. CentOS 7.5 Nautilus 100% reproducible crash.

Good day When trying to add an 'Other Locations' in Nautilus CentOS 7.5, Nautilus always 100% of the time crash with a kernel error. Here is a short video showing the workflow: https://youtu.be/dPmTDBRqL_I This did not happen in 7.4 Both 7.4 and 7.5 runs on VirtualBox 5.2.12 - but as stated before, this did not happen in 7.4 I also did a fresh clean install of both 7.4 and 7.5, and 7.5 exhibits this behaviour irrespective if it was updated or freshly installed. CentOS 7 + KDE : Dolphin weirdness

Hi, I'm running CentOS 7 + KDE on my workstation. Since the latest big batch of updates, Dolphin behaves a bit weirdly. When I download a .zip archive and then right click and "Extract here", the extracted files don't show. I have to hit F5 to refresh the current directory view and display the new files. KVM won't boot after update to 1804

Hi Everyone, I have a server that I recently applied all updates to to bring it to 1804. After rebooting the server, it would no longer boot and is instead dropping into a dracut shell. This is standard centos 7.5 gst-inspect-1.0 /usr/lib64/gstreamer-1.0/libgstclutter.so (gst-inspect-1.0:21979): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Could not initialize Gdk Could not load plugin file: File "/usr/lib64/gstreamer-1.0/libgstclutter.so" appears to be a GStreamer plugin, but it failed to initialize What do I do with that - the file is present, I even just did a yum reinstall clutter* Thanks Jerry

Use EPEL without redirection ?

Hi, Is there any way to deactivate the redirection to a mirror when using the third-party EPEL repository ? Our network uses a transparent HTTP/HTTPS proxy with a local AC. We can create exceptions for sites like centos.org or download.fedoraproject.org, but whenever we want to install a package from EPEL, the mirror redirection causes an error due to redirection. Question on CentOS 7.5 clutter-1.0 pkgconfig missing

Hello - I seem to be missing a pkgconfig clutter-1.0 file on C7.5 Doing yum provides "*/clutter-1.0" does not provide anything for /usr/share/pkgconfig ? Am I missing something ? how can I get the pkgconfig for clutter ? My system has none even though I have all the clutter-devel packages installed. Thanks, Jerry

Hello all. I just upgraded to the latest and tried to reboot: kernel panic and dead as a brick. Luckily GRUB still works and booting the to the next option in boot menu succeeds. How can this be? This OS is assumed to be solid as a brick :) br. jarif

Folks, As systems are upgraded, we're getting a ton of complaints (fortunately, we're in permissive mode) that would break everything. All of them involve rpc.gssd, and I see a number of bugs listed when I search. Note that I first saw this on a RHEL system, but now I'm seeing it on CentOS 7. I'm bringing it up here, because, given that there are multiple reported, that there's some bigger picture involving policy and rpc.gssd. I'll note that some of the reported bugs were *closed last year, or before, so it seems to me an old issue resurfaced. Example. SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/rpc.gssd from using the block_suspend capability. mark

Creating a bootable USB to install CentOS 7

I wanted someone to give me some tips or current places to look for easy ways to do this. I want to create the bootable USB from my Windows 10 PC in case that matters. Hi, I have CentOS 7 with KDE on my workstation. I'm using the CR repo. I had to remove Digikam to be able to do the latest update (1 GB of updates... wow). Persisting Routes In A Routing Table Other Than The Default

I need to add persistent routes to a policy routing table. I can add rules to an IP policy table after installing NetworkManager-config- routing-rules; but I have not found how to add routes to a table other than the specific table. Manually I do a: ip route add default via 192.168.1.6 dev ens192 table pods Rules load automatically via the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/rules- {interface} files. Routes added to /etc/sysconfig/network- scripts/routes-{interface} are always added to the default policy. kernel-lt from ELRepo vs. GRUB: define default boot kernel

Hi, After upgrading my workstation to CentOS 7.5 (1804), I had to upgrade my kernel from vanilla to kernel-lt from ELRepo. My NVidia GeForce 210 would only work with the driver provided by NVidia, which in turn required a more recent kernel than 3.0.10. Anyway. Right now here's all the kernels that I have on my workstation: [root@alphamule:~] # rpm -qa | grep -i kernel kernel-lt-devel-4.4.129-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 kernel-lt-devel-4.4.131-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 kernel-lt-headers-4.4.131-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 kernel-lt-4.4.131-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 kernel-lt-4.4.129-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 And here's what I'm currently running: [root@alphamule:~] # uname -r 4.4.129-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 I have a Logitech Illuminated USB keyboard, and one of the quirks of this piece of hardware is that it's unresponsive on boot time. Meaning when GRUB displays the kernel menu, the arrow keys (or for the matter any keys) won't work. Which means the only choice I have left is either boot the default kernel in the list... or go to another office, grab a standard USB keyboard and plug it in temporarily just to choose the kernel to boot. So right now I have two kernels on my machine, the 4.4.129 and the 4.4.131. How do I configure GRUB so that on the next reboot, it defaults to the 4.4.131 kernel? I knew how to do this with LILO under Slackware, but GRUB is a very different beast. Ok, what's the "correct" way to deal with systems developed in-house, that have their own sets up subdirectories. And why, for that matter, does running sealert give me the full path to the executable, like openjdk... but *not* the full path to the file it's trying to operate on, and I'm left going "ok, where was the file it deleted? (we're running in permissive mode - overwhelmingly, developers and subject matter experts no less than nothing about selinux). mark

CentOS 7.5 (1804) and NetworkManager

Hi, I'm running CentOS on all kinds of setups: servers, workstations, desktops and laptops. Up until now, I'm only using NetworkManager on laptops, since it makes sense to use it there. On servers and desktop clients, I usually remove it and configure the network "traditionally" by simply editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-whatever, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts, /etc/hostname and /etc/sysconfig/network. Running NetworkManager on anything else than a laptop has never made any sense to me, since it's basically an extra layer of abstraction. With the latest update, the removal of NetworkManager on a desktop client isn't possible anymore, since 'yum remove NetworkManager' also tries to remove 'gdm', and disabling it on startup spews back all sorts of errors. If you folks at Red Hat are reading this, I have one question: WHY ? Gnome's control-center now requires NetworkManager-wifi. But it's only a soft requirement, no shared libs involved. To keep your workstation NM-free, you want to install a dummy package that provides NetworkManager-wifi but actually contains nothing, ideally before updating to 7.5. Here's a script to create such a dummy: https://github.com/larsks/fakeprovide If you do this, control-center shows a sad face and some text (Oops, blah, blah, ...) in the WiFi tab. Just the same you always got in the network tab without NM. That's all. -M.

Issue with private mirror

Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster. I have a situation that has been confounding me for the better part of a week. I run an internal mirror of a Centos mirror, mainly because I have lots of hosts and low bandwidth. For my 7.x hosts, since 7.5.1804 was released, when I do a “yum update”, I get the following errors on a number of files. "Package does not match intended download. Suggestion: run yum --enablerepo=base clean metadata” I’ve done that. I’ve done “yum clean all”. I’ve done “yum clean all && rm -rf /var/cacheyum” I’ve blown away the 7.5.1804 tree in my mirror and resync’d it and it still does it. If I change the 7 -> 7.5.1804 symlink to 7.4, yum update runs fine. I’m confounded. How can I check the repo data files on my copy against the tree to see where or if it’s blowing up. Oddly, if I point the host I’m updating at the SAME server I’m mirroring from and do a yum update, it works fine. Using rsync to update. Out of Ideas, EKG

CentOS 7.5 and GPU memory

Is there a way to "control" how much GPU memory the OS uses ? Back on CentOS 7.4 it "seemed" to use less. I want / need to tell 7.5 to use less.\ or no GPU memory. I have a video application that needs more of the GPU memory and not so much the OS taking that memory. How do I do that? Thanks, Jerry

kickstart leavebootorder

hi all, we have hosts that we want to pxeboot first, always. with uefi, anaconda/kickstart always set the freshly installed disk as first bootdevice and there seems to be no way to disable this behaviour. the rhel7 docs describe a "leavebootorder" option (https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/ht…) but it doesn't "leave [the] boot order", it still (as described in the doc) puts the new one on top. it leaves other existing boot entries alone, in same order; but inserting a new entry on top effectively changes the order, not sure what they were smoking when they came up that option name.... does anyone have any tips/tricks to keep hosts booting with pxe first (besides parsing efibootmgr output and modifying the bootorder after an install). thanks, stijn

Hello Everyone, long time ago I wrote my last mail about my personal repository. The Upgrade went most smoostly. Only need to recompile mesa (enable by wayland ) and qt5-qtwebkit-5.9.2-1.el7.centos.src.rpm (missing by epel) nextcloud-client-2.3.3-1.el7.centos.src.rpm My current software Setup: - kernel 4.16.8 (elrepo with some amd switches) - updated graphic driver stack libdrm / libva 2.1/ amd & intel & nvidia (opensource driver) - gstreamer 10.5 & ffmpeg 2.8.14 - media with vlc 2.2.8 (vlc 3 & ffmpeg3 needs newer compiler) - mesa 18.0.3 / llvm 6.0 Moved from gnome to Xfwm4 for smoother workflow. Wayland is untested here. My WineHQ must be recompiled, that's all is left todo for now. I know some of my repo packages are not wayland enabled, but not needed this time. Totem is mostly unusable this time since mesa 18.0. Got same problem with Arch Linux. In fact nothing todo with my software stack. Got vlc by the way. Everything can be found at: http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/ While everything is my private playground and not a official repsitory the packages are "hand made" and unsigned. What's the benefit of this? Everything working as a normal Workstation on a server stack software. Tested also the last tombraider from steam....nice gameplay.. The last 2 years nothing breaks realy, when I starded my project: Centos Multimedia enabled. Still the same drive/installation with the vodoo software testdrive. Yum-cron

Ok, I've just had issues this morning, and went and *looked*. I can see a yum-cron running monthly, sure. Running weekly, I guess. Running daily? Why? And there is *NO* reason whatever for a "yum-hourly*. None. This is CentOS, not ubuntu-snapshot-of-the-moment. I don't know if this is from upstream or not, but it's wrong. I mean, even Redmond only pushes out patches once or twice a month, except for critical fixes.,,,.

This one won't update, EM: updates | 3.4 kB 00:00:00 epel/x86_64/updateinfo FAILED https://mirror.ynet.sk/epel/7/x86_64/repodata/3ada5bcbccaa9772074a773b15bd0…: [Errno 14] curl#7 - "Failed connect to mirror.ynet.sk:443; No route to host" I reinstalled epel-release package, same issue remains. Video troubles after 7.5 upgrade using CR repo

Hi, Our desktop clients are running CentOS 7 with the Xfce desktop from EPEL. The CR repository is enabled. A few days ago I launched an update, which brought in close to 1 GB of packages. I had some weird problems on two clients. One is an old Dell Optiplex 330 with a legacy video card. [root@cybermule:/] # lspci | grep -i vga 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RC410 [Radeon Xpress 200/1100] After the update, X wouldn't start anymore, and there was no way to make it behave. I had to reinstall everything and disable the CR repo (or more precisely not enable it in the first place). After this, things went back to normal. On another desktop client, a more recent Dell Optiplex 780, this is what the video card looks like. [root@littlesister:/] # lspci | grep -i vga 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) On this machine I have some weird screen artefacts. When opening a window - any window - there is a sort of a black flash. Meaning the window is a black square, and then the content appears. Plus, on LibreOffice, when doing things like modifying tabs in a document, the tab lines are persistent all over the screen. Very ugly, and the secretary complains about not being able to work correctly. Any idea what's happening here? Until now, CentOS 7 never gave me this sort of headaches. Probably too late for consideration at this point, but there are Enterprise Class SSDs available with DoD/NSA certified/approved self encryption capability. The concept is that encryption is a hardware feature of the drive, when you want to dispose of it, you throw away the key. This allows vendors to receive broken drives back from GOV/MIL clients securely so that failure methods can be researched. Replacement for Pdftk under CentOS 7 ?

Hi, Two weeks ago I migrated all our local school's servers and clients from Slackware 14.1 to CentOS 7. Everything went perfectly, and now I'm busy sanding down some edges. The previous installation sported pdftk and a frontend (can't remember the name) which allowed some basic operations on PDF files such as splitting and concatenation. The school's staff used this application all the time. Unfortunately it's not available under CentOS 7. Can you suggest any replacement for this application? On a side note, it should be something with a point-and-click GUI. Anyone have any clues about how to sanitize a dead SSD? We haven't had it yet, but we're sure it's coming. Esp. since I'm a federal contractor, a dead disk gets deGaussed, but what the hell do you do with a SSD?

Network Performance Update

My thanks to all that responded to my posting about measuring network performance. Helpful suggestions are always very much appreciated. The type of testing that we were attempting does not appear to be a major topic of interest on the list but the additional information below may be helpful to some users. Initial reports of an issue with |dd not being recognized was questioned so several more tests were conducted. Testing the transfer to /dev/null was repeated several times with identical results as indicated immediately below. How this message about dd was interpreted as it not being recognized is not clear. What is clear is the Broken pipe indication which we then went on to investigate. All indications are that the destination of the pipe was not accepting the sourced data. With this in mind we conducted several successful transfers as indicated below. It appears that /dev/null is not a legitimate place to send data from an ftp transfer. This was the case even when the original source was a file and not a dd command. One of the suggestions in response to our original posting indicated that "|dd might be changed to |"dd. This was also tried as indicated below. Both forms of the put command that send the data to an actual file (zeros) work and were repeated several times. Using the form |"dd consistently runs slower than using the original put command format: "|dd Bottom Line: Mystery partially solved. What is left is why the /dev/null destination for the data does not work. Just about every other commands we tried routing data to /dev/null work from any user space. NetworkManager dnsmasq plugin

I am trying to get dnsmasq to work through NetworkManager by putting dns=dnsmasq into /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf NetworkManager still works but dnsmasq doesn't start. I get this error in /var/log/messages: could not load plugin 'dnsmasq' from file '/usr/lib64/NetworkManager/libnm-settings-plugin-dnsmasq.so And the referenced file doesn't exist, as stated. So where or how do I get libnm-settings-plugin-dnsmasq.so? get unicode ranges from a TTF ???

Hello list, Is there a command line tool I run on a ttf font and get a list of the Unicode Ranges for that that font that would be compatible with the unicode-range: parameter in a CSS @fontface declaration? I'm guessing something in the python world probably exists... Hopefully something that works in CentOS 7 I need something like that for a FLOSS font server project that doesn't track users. I don't feel a need to split up a font by unicode range, but a lot of fonts are already split by their upstream developers according to language support - e.g. the Noto Fonts, the main font has a lot of glyphs but Hebrew for example is in it's own font file already. I want to be able to get the range information for what the fonts support. Thanks for any tips. My font server project I need it for is at https://github.com/AliceWonderMiscreations/FlossWoff2

HPLIP vs. CentOS

Hi, Our local school has recently acquired an HP PageWide Pro 477 professional printer. According to HP, the printer requires HPLIP 3.16.3 at least. Unfortunately, CentOS is only shipping HPLIP 3.15.9. So I downloaded and installed the hplip/hplipfull package from the HP site. Installing this thing and getting it to work is not exactly a trivial task, as I documented in my blog: https://blog.microlinux.fr/hp-pagewide-pro-centos/ The printer and the scanner worked perfectly for some time. Now all of a sudden scanning won't work anymore, and I have an alert that the HP plugin must be installed. So I launched hp-plugin (as I already did on numerous similar installations before), but unfortunately the plugin installation fails with the following error: Python gobject/dbus may not be installed. A google search shows me that I'm not alone, and that this error has affected users quite regularly over the years. The relevant packages are already installed on my system, so I'm facing a choice. 1. Either use the hplip-* packages provided by CentOS that are too old for our printer. 2. Use the buggy hplipfull package provided by HP. If anyone has an idea how to upgrade HPLIP on CentOS so that it actually works, I'd be grateful. OT: hardware, odd PSU issue

We have an HP blade enclosure for SL230s Gen 8. Went to replace the four PSUs in it, 1500W. Got them from one vendor, "refurbished"... and *none* worked. Returned them, and got them from another vendor, and *none* worked. Something odd here. For one, the LED doesn't light up when I'm holding the PSU and plug it in. Then there's something I just noticed late yesterday: in the socket of the PSU, on the shorter side of the trapezoid, there are four copper strips, running from the inside out. Anyone run into this before? Do these not power up, because they need some sort of odd power cord with something for those copper strips? mark, befuddled

One of our summer interns has stayed on working part time on weekends during the school year. This schedule presents an opportunity for technical investigations and some needed performance testing. The last weekend assignment included data rate testing on one specific network pathway. Checking out previous network testing was the first assignment. Some five year old, archived SPARC/Solaris and Intel/Solaris network tests included ftp runs like the following: ftp> ftp> put "|dd if=/dev/zero bs=32768 count=8000" /dev/null 200 PORT command successful. 150 Binary data connection for /dev/null (IP Address). 8000+0 records in 8000+0 records out 226 Transfer complete. local: |dd if=/dev/zero bs=32768 count=8000 remote: /dev/null 262144000 bytes sent in 23 seconds (11081.79 Kbytes/s) ftp> There were dozens of examples of such ftp tests with varying block sizes, bidirectional transfers, destination files on RAID storage, and a mix of some system loading programs run independently and during the network performance testing. Also archived were a full complement of network tests with what looks like the original ttcp and possibly newer versions. These utilities looked like they would work on our CentOS 6 systems, but we did not find ttcp and the ftp tests failed. the piping from dd failed with a message indicating that: |dd was not a recognized file. We no longer have available CentOS systems with versions of the OS before CentOS 6. Could there have been a change to ftp that will not allow a source file specified in this way or would this transfer method have never worked on Linux?

My Centos 6 wodim tell me that it can only format DVD+RW. I have DVD-RWs. Even when I format a DVD-RW on my standalone DVD recorder, wodim still will not write to it. Looking at the coming 12 months, I need some feedback as I select events that need to have a CentOS presence of some kind. While I have already committed to some of these events (See below), starting around July we haven't really signed on for much, and I would like to hear from the community what events you feel we should be at, and why. The why is, by far, the more important half of the question. Why, as in, what story do we want to tell there; who are we trying to tell that story to; what would be a positive outcome from being there. The story at the SuperComputing events is what I have been tweeting "SuperComputing is #PoweredByCentOS" - which is incontrovertibly true. The top 500 supercomputers in the world are overwhelmingly CentOS. We attend cPanel because the web hosting business, and in particular cPanel-backed sites, are overwhelmingly running on CentOS. FOSDEM - because it's FOSDEM. Events where we could have a presence are, of course, legion. We can continue to do the events that we did last year, and the year before, and that would be fine. Or we can try to visit some other industry segment where we'd like to shine brighter. I've made a Google Form at https://goo.gl/forms/kLZ2y1H1jRSy4NdC3 listing the events that I'm currently considering, but also providing space for you to tell me what events I'm not thinking about yet. Hi, i am upstream developer of libburn. Nevertheless, the following is intended to be purely technical info, not advertising. Better do not use wodim with DVD media. It was forked from a CD-only version of cdrecord and got added not-so-skilled code for operating DVD. One should use dvd+rw-tools or a program that has libburn as backend. I am not aware whether cdrecord is meanwhile willing to format DVD-RW. With dvd+rw-tools and according to an old cheat sheet of mine, a DVD-RW gets formatted like this: dvd+rw-format -force /dev/sr0 (Iirc, the option -force was needed if there is already an ISO filesystem on the medium.) libburn's frontend cdrskin has a command line interface that is roughly compatible to wodim or cdrecord. (There are also Xfburn, xorriso, and Brasero's libburn plugin.) A formatting run looks like this: cdrskin -v dev=/dev/sr0 blank=format_overwrite Fred Smith wrote: > Why would one format a cd/dvd? For multi-session they must be blanked fully, which lasts as long as a full write run. My own experince since 2004 is that formatted DVD-RW can be re-used more often before they die. Question about "generic" USB <=> Serial Port kernel drivers...

OK, I am running CentOS 6 on my Laptop and Desktop, presently kernel version 2.6.32-696.20.1.el6.x86_64 (yes, a version or so out of date -- I'll probably do an update soon -- non-trivial since my Internet connection is via dialup). I recently bought a couple of Adafruit Arduino compatibles, a Flora and a Metro 328. Hooking up the Flora and the Metro to a Raspberry Pi running Raspbian (kernel 4.9.35-v7+), tells me that the Metro 328's USB uses a FTDI USB serial interface (ftdi_sio.ko) and the Flora uses the cdc_acm (cdc-acm.ko) USB serial interface. Both of these drivers are available with CentOS 6's kernel, but since Adafruit uses their own Vendor & Product IDs and my (old) kernel's ftdi_sio and cdc-acm drivers don't have Adafruit Vendor & Product IDs, the drivers don't automagically connect. The ftdi_sio has parameters for the Vendor & Product IDs, and specifing the product ID for the Metro 328 allows the driver to latch onto the Metro 328's USB connect and things work (I get a /dev/ttyUSB0 device). The cdc-acm does not have any parameters and I don't see any way to get it to connect. I am pretty sure all Adafruit did was change the programming of the USB chip to have their Vendor & Product IDs and the driver should work (the FTDI one does, once the Vendor & Product IDs are passed to it). My question: since the cdc-acm is not parameterized, I am guessing I need to get the kernel module source (from RH's kernel source RPM? Or maybe Elrepo has it?), hack in the Adafruit Vendor & Product IDs into its table of Vendor & Product IDs and recompile it. Is this correct? Postfix config problem w/ tls

I have followed the guides on setting up postfix relay to my account at network solutions. I added these to main.cf: inet_interfaces = localhost relayhost = [mail.mydomain.com]:587 smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_password smtp_use_tls = yes smtp_tls_CAfile = /etc/pki/tls/certs/sendmail.pem The username and password are correct, and all these options work fine from thunderbird on a windows box in my local network. Hi All, What is the correct way to provide a CentOS 7 - WMware image for ESX ? As an amateur to VMware - I thought - great I can get VMplayer and ESX should be able to import my image... Wrong... I even went through the trouble of "converting" to VMWare workstation and thinking ESX could import that - Apparently still Wrong... I cannot for the life of me understand how one product family is so incompatible with itself. But that is another story. I just want to be able to provide a pre-built image with CentOS 7 and my other programs on a bootable VMware image that is easily imported into any VMware platform - Workstation, ESX or other. How is that accomplished ? Thanks for your thoughts and experience. Jerry

VGA connectors fail to work with i915 & 3.10.0-693.21.1.el7.x86_64 kernel

Everyone, A while back I reported problems with the Intell i915 video driver in an ASUS mother board. I never found a solution, but did find a work around. It is apparent that when the VGA cable is connected during boot time the screen becomes blank and does not allow a login, but if the vga cable is disconnected and the DVI connector on the video screen and motherboard are used everything works as expected. I am posting this so that if others have the same problem they can easily bypass the problem with a DVI cable, and probably an HDMI cable, but I was not able to test the HDMI. Greg Ennis

Libreswan IPSec Protected GRE Tunnel & firewall-cmd

I am attempting to setup an IPSec protected GRE tunnel with a Cisco router. I believe the IPSec association is up, however I cannot move traffic over the tunnel. It is not clear how to integrate the tunnel interface (gre1) with firewall-cmd; adding the interface to trusted does not appear to 'stick'. OpenVPN server and firewalld

How do I insert the iptables rule below using firewalld? I'm moving up from CentOS 6 to 7 on an office gateway and I'm trying to get OpenVPN working to allow home workers to access PCs at the office. I've got it all working but only by manually inserting an ACCEPT rule in the FORWARD iptables chain: iptables -I FORWARD 3 -i tun+ -j ACCEPT This rule was extracted from my iptables firewall under CentOS6. The 3 puts it after the accepts for established connections and loopback connections, but before any firewalld sub-chains. With this I can connect to an internal Windows 10 system with Remote Desktop. How can I inject this rule using firewalld, either as a direct rule or as some more firewalld-approved kind of rule?

touchpad stopped working in KDE only

I just installed CentOS 7 on a ThinkPad T420s. All went well. Touchpad worked fine at login screen, in Gnome, and in KDE. KDE is my preferred environment, so I began customizing - including configuring the touchpad to accept "Tapping" gestures via System Settings, Input Devices, Touchpad. As soon as I hit "apply", the touchpad stopped responding to cursor movements. The touchpad buttons continue to work, just no cursor movements with touches. Touch pad is still fully functional at login prompt and in Gnome. However, cursor movements stop as soon as KDE desktop (KDE Plasma) starts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm almost ready to just re-install CentOS 7 again and not mess with the touchpad settings ever again, but I figure this must be something simple. Other online solutions have not worked, which is why I'm asking here. Thanks, TW

USB audio on Centos-7

I'm using Centos-7 on my PC, with ASUS motherboard. internal audio has always worked fine EXCEPT that I can never get audio input (for recording) to work. I want to feed audio from a phono turntable and from a cassette deck. I use a phono preamp for the turntable, or directly connect the tape deck. but either nothing, or low level with horrible distortion. so, I gave up (after years of intermittent battles) and bought a Behringer UFO202, which looks like it should work fine with Linux. It allegedly uses a TI PCM2902 chipset, which many online postings claim works fine with various flavors of Linux. This device has a USB port, a pair of line in and line out jacks, a phono jack, a headphone volume control, and a switch to change the line in to phono in. I can use headphones plugged into the UFO202 to listen to audio playing on the computer, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to feed audio into the UFO202 (via its line in RCA jacks) and have it come out speakers or phones connected to the computer. I've poked and proded at alsamixer, the mate sound tool, and pavucontrol. No useful results. Pavucontrol, in its input section, does show the device listed, and it shows activity on its level mater when there is audio input via the line in jacks on the UFO202. Disconnect the line input and the activity ceases. (Mate sound control also lists the device, but I don't even get an indication of any input at all, as I described above for pavucontrol.) but I simply cannot figure out how to get that audio to play in any audible way. I know that USB audio input works, because I have a Plantronics USB headset with microphone that I use often to converse online, and it works nicely. (and a possibly separate issue: how the heck does one point Audacity to a USB input? Can't find anything in its UI, and there's darn little help online that is actually helpful, in this regard.) Can you sense my frustration here? I'd appreciate any help that is actually helpful,... perhaps someone who reads this actually has one of these things and has made it work? thanks in advance! Anyone using GQRX in Centos-7, for SDR ?

I gave myself a toy, one of those cheap USB Software Define Radios, and would like to use it on my C7 box. Having wasted some time on it, I gave up and installed Ubuntu on a USB HD so I can boot that to play with SDR. The Ubuntu GQRX installation is well documented and went off without a hitch. but I just hate having to boot something else on my main box (partly because it also runs a mailserver for my personal domain, partly because, well, I just want my box running CentOS, not Ubuntu.) Searching through SDR info on line I see someone has documented installing all the bits for C6, but I suspect the process is different for C7. BTW, I installed the various bits I could find from, er, I think some came from li.nux.ro, some perhaps from epel, on C7, but couldn't get them to properly function. Worse, when the USB radio is unplugged from the system, it locks up hard. then a few days ago, I had been playing with it using the UBUNTU install, did a reboot and for kicks fired up the GQRX on Centos, and lo and behold it worked! I tried running it on Centos yesterday and it reverted to type, i.e., lock up hard. I suspect that Ubuntu is leaving some hardware in a state that allows it to work on a subsequent Centos boot (without poweroff), but no clue what. So, if anyone can point me to how to use it on C7, I'd greatly appreciate it. thanks in advance! question re: ls oddity

Hi all! I use Centos-7 all the time. I also have a Fedora-26 VM that I use only occasionally. Today I noticed that ls on the two systems gives different results when listing the same (networked) directory. the one on fedora 26 shows files with spaces in the names like this: 'CHURCH FAMILY ADDRESS AND PHONE LIST.doc' whereas the one on Centos shows it without the quotes. both systems have the same alias for ls I don't see anything based on a brief excursion of the respective man pages. the one on Centos is version 8.22, and the one on F26 is 8.27, so unless there is some dotfile somewhere that ls refers to for options, this must be a version-change. it seems like a possibly useful feature, one might be able to use that to avoid nasty quoting problems in shellscripts, for instance. tftpd server S not responding

I have a tftpd server S running on centos 7 and managed by systemd It is not respoding to A server which is sending the tftp read request RRQ. I do see the RRQ packets coming from A to S, but S never responds back from a different port Y to A So this part is working fine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trivial_File_Transfer_Protocol#/media/File:Tf… But I do not see any attempts to even send a data packet back in my packet capture running on S So this event is not occuring, as if my tftpd server is dead. I have the firewalld turned off on S to eliminate the possibility that firewalld blocking those packets from reeaching to tftpd daemon. Nvidia-detect error with on HP Z4 (CentOS 6.9)

Hi all, I'm testing an installation of nvidia drivers on a HP Z4 workstation (nvidia Quadro P600) with CentOS 6.9. Running nvidia-detect with this setup gives the following output: # nvidia-detect Error getting device_class nvidia-detect also quits with exit-code 255. Could this be a bug in nvidia-detect? Or is it an unsupported configuration?
