Lstat & Dovecot

I am chasing a problem with dovecot generating an error: lstat(/var/spool/virtual_mailboxes/[domain dir]/[user dir]/Maildir/cur) failed: Permission denied I first tried making the directory world readable, same error. Them tried to lstat [the path] at the console and receive the error: lstat: command not found I have a manpage on lstat, but no file. "Yum provides" showed the manpages, but no rpm I could find What rpm is it in? (Or, have I started down a path that doesn't involve this application & Dovecot isn't clear) Thanks Dave

konsole failure to

Everyone, I am evaluating Centos to be for the purpose of using it as a server for a database. I doubt that I will use anything but run level 3, but am looking at the gui tonight. I am having difficult using konsole with the same scripts that I have used on FC4, FC5, and FC6 with success. I am executing this command from a Desktop link konsole --vt_sz 80x25 --profile smile with smile being a profile stored in the user's .kde subdirectory The above command had to be modified to include the path to pick up the profile called 'smile' konsole --vt_sz 80x25 --profile /home/admin/.kde/share/apps/konsole/profiles/smile However, although including the path allowed konsole to get to the profile called smile, a logon script named head in 'smile' was not executed. Args0=/bin/bash,-c,/usr/local/bin/head Args0=/bin/bash,-c,head Both of the above failed to execute 'head' but head could be executed from the command line and functioned as expected. Any ideas? unable to start installing

Hi. I'm trying to install CentOs 4.3 on a "old" server. Cd's are ok, as i am able to use them in another computers. What happens is that initial text screen shows up (asking if i want to install in text or grpahics mode), but either way all that happens is that i get a cursor blinking on the top left corner for a long period of time. anything i can try? thank you.

Just because I've been pulling my hair out for over a month about this problem, I'd like to get it into the archives. When copying large files (multigigabyte) on a CentOS 4.4 4GB Xeon (running 32 bit) server (2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp), I was getting: page allocation failure. order:0, mode:0x50 (snip lines and lines of debug output) This was accompanied by a huge swapout storm that brought the system to a near standstill. Also, it could trigger OOM-Killer activity. Setting /proc/sys/vm/lower_zone_protection to 150 seems to prevent the problem. (It's not been long enough that I'm *certain* that it's fixed but it seems to be.) The upstream bug report is here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=149088 Hope this helps someone someday, because I had a heck of a time finding an answer. -Steve Bergman

Firefox Tab Cycle Plugin?

Hi folks, I thought I saw a comment on this list a ways back about a firefox plugin that would make a browser automatically cycle through the tabs it had loaded. We'd like to use this to load some monitoring systems in tabs, and then have the browser cycle through them so we have a poor-man's status display station. Does anyone know more specifics about this plugin I think I heard about? CentOS on Dell Inspiron 640m laptop

I ordered and just received today a new Dell Inspiron 640m laptop (it also goes by the name E1405). Anyone tried installing CentOS on this laptop? It's the wireless drivers I'm most concerned about; it's got the Dell 1390 internal wireless card (not the Intel wireless). Anyone have some feedback, on the wireless or any other issues, on running CentOS on this laptop? Thanks Paul

CentOS 4.4 and other software?

I just installed CentOS 4.4 on my laptop, having good experience with Debian, Fedora Core 5, and RHEL4. I really like 4.4's overall appearance (meshing of RHEL4 and FC5), but what I have yet to figure out is how to access repositories for applications that are not part of the default install, such as ncftp. I invoked and updated yum, but it had no idea. I would also like to see what all available kernel offerings are, and maybe various development tools (i.e. dependencies). Up2Date didn't seem much of a help, either. None of the above tools seemed to know anything about ncftp, and it has been around for at least 10 years, and is available for just about every distro, sometimes by default. Am I missing something with available packages? Thanks. Scott

In my case, I have about 3TB of data that needs to be backed up, and taken offsite. So, the only real option is rsync going out to disks. We started out with using one of the recipes from the Linux Server Hacks book, #38, #41 & #42 to essentially build up a poor man's SAN. Using CentOS installed on systems with 3Ware cards, I have 2 onsite 4 TB NAS. The first one is for network use, the second is for hourly, daily and weekly snapshots of the main NAS. There's a third 4TB NAS that's located offsite in a colo facility that's fed with dual T1s. We can have anywhere from 2-5 GB of data change every day. We're a company of about 50 employees, and we do legal work - so nothing can be thrown away. This system runs 7 days a week, and it's fully automated with email alerts, etc. The big benefit is restores. We've had our graphics dept accidently delete 250GB of data, and it was trivial to scp the missing data back to the main NAS. It all happened at network speeds, over a GB switch. All the NASes have dual NICS in them, and the second NICS are connected to their own private GB switch - hence the poor man's SAN. When hourly snapshots run, all the data that changes has a seperate GB network to move the data, leaving the office network alone. No user can tell that backups are happening throughout the day. I had a chat with someone from RedHat at LinuxWorld Boston about this. Sounded like it was something they were hearing a lot, but hadn't figured out how to address. In my case, I'd like to be running sendmail 8.13.x so as to be more up-to-date on milter compatability, but didn't want to be dealing with having to build RPMs and play the dependency issue game from there. While it's true the next major release will incorporate the newer sendmail, the selling point of longer-term support is then nullified some. It's nice to stay on a relatively stable release and NOT have major upheavals in the entire platform so often, but it would be powerful to couple that stability with the ability to easily update key componentry in just one or two areas. That way, you could have something very stable for a platform base, plus the one newer component needed for a server's core function (web-related in the case of the poster here, email-related in my case). Hopefully in the future there will be a way to deal with this.

Hello all, I used to use fully statically linked PHP, which I build into RPM using own-written spec-file. I need to do this as there are a lot of boxes with old linuxes (RedHat 6.2, 7, 9) which I can't upgrade to CentOS3/4 right now for a several reasons I don't want to explain here. When I've been using CentOS 4.0 and 4.1 - there were no big problems to link PHP as static executable (i.e., when ldd says that "php not a dynamic executable"). All I have to do, is: LIBS="`pkg-config openssl --libs` `pkg-config --libs libxml-2.0` -lungif -lstdc++" \ LDFLAGS="-static -static-libgcc" \ CFLAGS="`pkg-config openssl --cflags` $RPM_OPT_FLAGS" \ ./configure ..... and LDFLAGS="-all-static -static-libgcc" \ CFLAGS="`pkg-config openssl --cflags` $RPM_OPT_FLAGS" \ make %{?_smp_mflags} It was sufficient to successfully compile totally static executable. Hello All. I am trying to set up a rails+mongrel+mod_proxy_balance application. Unfortunately the stock apache install on centos is the 2.0 series which does not support mod_proxy_balance. I could not find the 2.2X RPMs on dag or dries either. Is there a yummy way to upgrade to the 2.2 series of apache? I tried with the individual RMPS but no joy there due to comples web of dependencies.

I would second this suggestion. We use OpenVPN to control access to our management network and it works really well. We currently manage over 50 people with VPN keys and the list is growing. The only drawback is that there isn't a very good web based GUI to administer your keys. Guys, I wonder if anyone can give me any pointers here, I hope it's CentOS related enough not to be too off topic, if it is then apologies. I'm attempting to setup a CGI which can connect to a remote system and execute a command. On the 'client', for the Apache user 'apache' I've given it a shell and generated a key-pair. I've configured Keychain [ http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/keychain/ ] to load the keys for the apache user and make these persistently available via ssh-agent. I've setup a specific user 'cgissh' on the remote target system and configured its authorized_keys with apache@client's pubkey. >From the client system, running the following script from the shell returns the information I'd expect... I'm not to experienced in Linux but I've done that (on 4.4) just let the downloader install it and type vmware. It'll point you to the config file and just follow the instructions, even a windows guy like me could do that, I was sorprised to find it run smoother than in Windows Server 2003. Trouble syncing Palm via USB

Hi, I'm having trouble getting my Palm to sync with jpilot on my Centos system via USB. When I sync, I get this error in jpilot: pi_accept Illegal seek Exiting with status SYNC_ERROR_PI_ACCEPT Finished I have jpilot syncing fine with this Palm over the network, BTW. For USB, I set things up for udev as described on various websites. Here are the relevant ports & symlink (created and deleted automatically with each sync attempt): lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Oct 17 09:09 /dev/pilot -> ttyUSB1 crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 188, 0 Oct 17 09:09 /dev/ttyUSB0 crw------- 1 marc uucp 188, 1 Oct 17 09:09 /dev/ttyUSB1 I added myself to the uucp group. It doesn't look like this is a permissions issue, does it? (I saw a message in the list's archives indicating that one must start jpilot as root in order to sync, but this doesn't make sense to me.) Any ideas as to what's going wrong? Are others syncing Palm devices to their Centos boxes via USB (and from normal user accounts)? I have tried other things, such as using a different USB port on the PC, and having jpilot sync to /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 instead of the /dev/pilot symlink. I've also searched the jpilot mailing list archives, and the web in general, and still no solution. I'm running an up to date Centos 4 system, pilot-link-0.11.8-8, and self-compiled jpilot 0.99.9. When Keychain runs it prompts the user for their private key password then stores the ssh-agent information away in ~/.keychain/$hostname-sh and ~/.keychain/$hostname-csh. For example... [root@webdev1 ~]# cat ~apache/.bash_profile keychain --nogui id_dsa --clear [[ -f $HOME/.keychain/$HOSTNAME-sh ]] && source $HOME/.keychain/$HOSTNAME-sh [[ -f $HOME/.keychain/$HOSTNAME-sh-gpg ]] && source $HOME/.keychain/$HOSTNAME-sh-gpg The '--clear' will remove all Keychain information on login (though not perfectly, it could be circumvented with a well-timed CTRL-C) but, critically, leave it available for non-interactive sessions if you login, enter private key passphrase then logout. You'll initially need to "su - apache" once if the box reboots and you need to enter the private key password if you need to 'su' to do anything else as the user, otherwise the ssh-agent information is available to scripts running as that user. For bash, as mentioned I'd just import it with [[ -f $HOME/.keychain/$HOSTNAME-sh ]] && source $HOME/.keychain/$HOSTNAME-sh For the Perl script I needed to add: $ENV{SSH_AGENT_PID}="4189"; $ENV{SSH_AUTH_SOCK}="/tmp/ssh-yheGAI4188/agent.4188"; Obviously, I'll read those in properly from ~/.keychain/$hostname-sh in the final script but as proof of concept... :) Will.

Jim and all, I've installed VMWare Server on CentOS 4.2, but I couldn't get the rpm to work properly for some reason. When I installed via tar.gz file, ran the scripts, things just worked. CentOS 4 lm_sensors help for intel D945 motherboards

Has anyone succeeded in getting lm_sensors to produce useful output for intel D945-based motherboards? According to the lm_sensors site, I need a newer kernel (2.6.16) to read the ICH7 data. I noticed the i2c patches in the kernel source rpm, but no joy. I'd be okay with building my own modules, but haven't found anyone to provide the kernel module source apart from the kernel tree. I need help resolving a "transaction check error" when trying to 'yum install gtk2-devel' on a CentOS 4.2 x86_64 system. CentOS 4.3 on Intel Xeon Core 2 Duo

Dear list, I am planning to buy a new server -because the new Core2 Duo based Xeons (5100 series) are considerably faster in some scenarios than Opteron machines while not beeing more expensive, I would like to hear some real-world experiences from people who have installed CentOS 4.3 or 4.4 on such a setup. Specifically: CPU: 2x Intel Xeon 5100 2GHz Board: Intel S5000 chipset RAID5: 3ware 9550SXU-4LP I have some experience with the 3ware Adapter (new kernel module needed on install) but now nothing about compatibility, extra drivers or other problems related to the relatively new Xeon/S5000 platform and CentOS 4.3/RHEL 4.3. Hi All, Need some information on getting the right storage array to buy for my cluster configuration can anyone help me with this my Setup so far 2 Athlon 2800 Sempron System 1 Wti Network power switch 1 24 Port 10/100 Cat5 switch 2 Adaptec 39160 scsi host adapter pci cards installed in the systems. Running two sshd's

Hi all, I'm wondering whether it is feasible or not to run two distinct sshd daemons with different config options! I have a CentOS 4.4 gateway with 2 Ethernet interfaces. One is connected to the Internet and the other to the LAN. Basically, what I would like to do is having a sshd that listens to the LAN interface with password enabled auth. and a sshd bound to the Internet interface with forced key auth. (no password auth. allowed). I'm not sure that such a thing is possible using a single sshd_config file. What do you think would be the best way to do this? Is there someone here that already made a similar setup? Thanks for any help / ideas. Regards, Gilles.

mysql won't start

OK so at some point I borked my mysql 4.1.20 installation on my x86_64 system. Possibly relevant: I have enabled the centosplus repository in yum.conf because I needed a package from there. I have not upgraded mysql from there. Everything was working, then "something" aparrently happened, and now mysql won't start. The logs say: 061031 11:37:38 mysqld started 061031 11:37:38 [ERROR] Can't start server : Bind on unix socket: Permission denied 061031 11:37:38 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server running on socket: /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock ? 061031 11:37:38 [ERROR] Aborting 061031 11:37:38 [Note] /usr/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown complete Now the naive would presume that there is a permissions problem on /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock, right? Certainly the web suggests that this is the problem. [root@urquell2 ~]# ls -ld /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock /var/lib/mysql ls: /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock: No such file or directory drwxrwxr-x 4 mysql mysql 4096 Oct 31 11:39 /var/lib/mysql Or maybe I'm trying to run mysql as the wrong user? I've built multi-terabyte systems around CentOS, and I'm in the process of writing up the "Poor Man's SAN" in my copious free time! ;) You don't mention what kind of RAID card you're using, but I stick with 3Ware. In a nutshell, all you need to do is a minimal install of CentOS from the first CD. Yum update everything. After this point, you can config Samba for your Windows clients, or NFS for other *nixes as needed. Could probably do AFS as well for Macs, but I haven't done that before. You'll have to wait until I get my howto done to configure hourly snapshots, etc.... HTH Mark

I've found a few questions about trying to get this to work, I managed to do it, and thought I'd share: - get the evdev driver here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=1745 - to install, run ./configure --prefix=/usr/X11R6, then make, make install. - edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf like this: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "evdev" Option "Protocol" "evdev" Option "Dev Name" "Microsoft Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 1.00" Option "Dev Phys" "usb-*/input0" Option "Device" "/dev/input/event2" Option "Buttons" "9" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" # wheel moves forward/back in the browser EndSection To figure out the "Dev Name", "Dev Phys" and "Device" settings cat /proc/bus/input/devices. I haven't gotten the tilt wheel to work yet, but everything else is good. You may want to swap buttons 2 and 3 as well using xmodmap. HTH Tom

Gents, I have added the following to /etc/mail/sendmail.mc and rebuilt it trying to control spam. I still get about 25 spam messages a day. Is there something else that can help control spam? Hi all, Ive done this before but the solution alludes me now. Can someone please remind me how to change the default Redhat behavior of root email being sent from root(a)server.domain to root@domain. It's something in sendmail.mc from memory. Thanks

Spamassassin/Sendmail issues

I am running a server with Centos 4.4, using a combo of sendmail-clamav-spamassassin for mail, which has been working quite well up until last night. Around 3:00am, all mail going to all users was being rejected by spamassassin. My ~/mail/.procmailrc is as follows: ======================== MAILDIR=$HOME/mail # :0 H * ^X-Spam-Status:.*Yes { EXITCODE=67 :0: /dev/null } ========================= Checking yum logs, nothing that would affect SA or sendmail was updated, so I have no idea why everything would suddenly go bananas. Clamav was updated, but that was at 5:00am, and the mails were getting bounced back starting at 3:00. I am attaching 2 maillog snips showing mail from the centos list, with one going thru as expected and the other getting bounced back per my .procmailrc file. Any help appreciated. -- TomE. Hello everyone, I'm trying to install the CentOS 4.4 Server CD on old hardware. The hardware is a Dell PowerEdge 2300 with Adaptec 7890 and 7860 controllers. It's the first time I've done a Linux install with hardware RAID. However, I'm having trouble getting CentOS (as well as Fedora Core 6) to detect the SCSI hard drives. When it comes to the part where you choose where to install Linux, it just doesn't detect the hard drives. It shows on the hardware configuration when the system boots up and when I try to install Windows 2003 Server, the drives are detected - so I don't think it's a hardware issue. Now, the question is - do I have to initialize something on the installation process? What do I do so that I can install CentOS with this specific configuration. Dual Opteron or Dual Xeon?

I am about to lease another server to be a backup web/mail server with a replicated mysql database. The current live server is a dual Xeon 2.8Ghz. Would I do better to get another Xeon server or an Opteron based server? My concerns are compatibility of the database and the SSL certificate currently running on the Xeon machine. Question about printer

Hello List, I have centos 4.3 and a printer Xerox4517 attached to it via parallel port. The problem I have is after some while of inactivity I cannot print, and when I check in the control center (KDE) I see the printer status is stopped (accepting jobs). I just have to start the printer and I can get it back to normal. It is possible to configure some kind of keep alive or something like that in order the printer doesn't go to the stopped state? I will appreciate your comments, --Ivan.

DomainKey and mailing list

Hm, my previous post on subject seem to have fallen in /dev/null (can't find it even in list archives, strange). Anyhow. While on the subject of spam control. I was playing lately with Domain Key (and also newer Domain Key Identified Mail) systems. It's currently primarly used by Yahoo and Google Mail (gmail). For example, all emails from gmail.com on this list have DomainKey-Signature header. Also, all of those emails fail the verification. It is most likely due to the mailing list mangling the Subject line (addtion of [CentOS] tag) and body of the message (addtion of footer). Currently, Google uses "in testing flag" in the DNS record (as can be seen from output of "dig beta._domainkey.gmail.com txt"), so none of those emails should be rejected by anti-spam software. However, if they change the flags to instruct anti-spam software to reject emails with invalid signatures, the emails from this (and many other) mailing lists will start bouncing big time. I guess if these systems become widespread in the future, either the mailing list will need to be updated (so that it regenerates signatures with its own key, as defined in proposed standards) or mangling of subject line and the body will have to be abandoned... Terminal settings question.

Hiya folks, Maybe someone can help me with this question. I'm a long time mutt user. However in recent years, I have been a member of an increasing number of mail lists. And an increasing number of mail list users are starting to use special characters in their emails that my terminal is not understanding correctly. When it doesn't understand the character correctly, it starts to interfere with the repaints when I scroll around through messages or through the indexes. As an example, I believe it was this list where there was recently a discussion regarding Core Duo which included a fancy symbol for (tm) in the subject line. This thread was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak and I'm now an unhappy Thunderbird user as opposed to a happy mutt user. So. Clearly I have something set incorrectly so that Mutt (and/or the terminal I am using) do not understand the special characters. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the answer as to how to fix this so that I can ditch Thunderbird and go back to Mutt? Booting kernel for installation CD

Hello, I want to install CentOS 4.4 on a Compaq Proliant DL 360. The installation fails just after booting on the first CD. Linux tries to autodetect hardware and fails with the CDROM. And it works, the kernel boots, but my CentOS CD is not recognize anymore as a CentOS CD. Why CentOS didn't recognize my CDROM? What should I modify in order to install CentOS using the RHEL kernel? laptop power management problems

I've a "small" problem with returning from suspend mode on my laptop. Under Windows XP, it works perfectly. Under CentOS, it simply freezes. The thing I'm suspecting is the hard drive not spinning. Has anybody else experienced same problem, and/or have some advice? I hoped hdparm might have something usefull, but reading the man page I haven't found anything promising to try out. Another thing I attempted is to recompile kernel with support for user mode suspend (or something like that) that I heard should work very nicely (not dependent on BIOS or anything, purely implemented in Linux). However, the rebuild of centosplus kernel with that option enabled simply failed with bunch of errors. It's an older laptop that uses APM (no ACPI). I'm not sure what debugging information might be helpfull. Kind of clueless here. I'll be happy to provide any information needed though.

Usb flashdisks automount by all users?

Hi I'm using Centos 4.3 / gnome When I plug a usb flash disk as root, the drive is automounted and the icon shows up on the desktop (nice). But with any other user when I plug any usb drive there's no icon on the desktop, and if i open computer, the icon is there but if i try to open it there's an error message saying that only root can mount that drive. I've tried some things like editing the fstab but with no success. what should i bee looking for here? thank you, Daniel

Hey Group, We are trying to build a shared disk, shared cpu, shared ram....using a dell power edge servers.....which can utilize our server resource for our expanding website. We are running RHEL4 on dell power edges. Can anyone suggest any good production ready open source solution running on top of 2.6 kernel that might work for us? I have looked at openMosix which has only 2.4 kernel production ready and openSSI which has only 1.2 tested on 2.4 kernel and 1.9 still in testing. Is there any solution which can work with 2.6 kernel. Also IF POSSIBLE we would like to integrate the solution with Xen3.0.2. Need help - Install Driver for Video Capture Card

Hi everybody, I need help to install driver for video card. I have physically installed two video capture card on two different computers. Both running Linux CentOS release 4.4 (final), and kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp. The first computer is Pentium D 3.00 GHz, 1Gbyte RAM. The second computer is AMD Athlon 2800+, 1 Gbyte RAM. I succesfully installed opencv-0.9.7 on both computers with gtk+ 2.x, libjpeg, zlib, libpng, libtiff, ffmpeg, dc1394, raw1394 and V4L pre-installed. Opencv running very well on both computers. I installed Hauppauge ImpactVCB (model 558) on Pentium D machine, while on Athlon machine, I installed I-O Data GV-VCP2M/PCI. After physically installing the cards, I installed the bttv-0.9.15 driver on both machine according to the instru8ction given by : http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/BTTV.html, with exception that I did not recompile the kernel as instructed if the machine does not has the videodev.o, bttv.o, and tuner.o. Both machines do not have the files mentioned above. After completed installation, I could capture videos through the cards on both machines. However, if i restarted the machines, I could not capture any video anymore. I have to repeat the process of loading the modules as follow: - sync; sleep 1; sync - modprobe videodev - modprove bttv Would anyone help me solve this problems. I already write in the modprobe.conf file the following: Pentium D machine: alias char-major-89 i2c-dev options i2c-core i2c=debug=1 options i2c-algo-bit bit=test=1 alias char-major-81 videodev alias char-major-81-0 bttv option bttv card=10 Athlon machine: alias char -majorp-81 alias char-major-81 bttv options bttv card=2 I really do not remember where I got the codes, and I also not very sure whether they are correct or not. Hyperthreaded CPU and SMP kernel

Hi gang! I'm using Centos 4.4 at work on a HP Proliant DL320 G2, which has a Hypterthreaded Pentium IV CPU. I used to use RHEL WS 2.1 on it, and RH installed and used the SMP kernel. Centos 4.4 did NOT install the SMP kernel. Is there some reason why I should NOT install it myself? I.e., some reason why an SMP kernel shouldn't be used on such a machine? AACRAID controller setup?

This isn't exactly a Centos question but maybe someone here can help: Does the AACRAID controller (as in an IBM 3550) store its config info on the drives or internally? I only have one of the boxes and want to load Centos 3.x on several drives which can be swapped into servers at another location. With SCSI, all that took was a full disk dd copy and a little fiddling with the HWADDR for the nics. However these don't even see a disk until you run the raid setup in bios. Does anyone know if a new server will recognize the setup (one drive, no raid) from the cloned disk or what it will take to make it accept the swap? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Ok, I'm finally of a mindset to replace my now tired, aging Dell Inspiron 600m. I'm currently running Fedora Core on it, and am fairly happy with the software. Has anybody used CentOS on a Macbook Pro? What gotchas are there? (The first that comes to mind is the lack of a right mousebutton) Scouting on the Internet, I've seen that some people have trouble getting sound to work. I'm interested in the following: 1) Network/Wifi support 2) Sound 3) Video (don't need 3D, currently using 2D ATI Radeon drivers and am happy) 4) USB support (works?) 5) External video - I frequently have to give presentations! All, For 4.4 mozilla is out and seamonkey is in. In the old mozilla there was no command mozilla-xremote-client. In the new seamonkey there is a command mozilla-xremote-client. Under mozilla you could do "mozilla -remote "openurl(www.cnn.com)" and it would set the current page to the url. Trying this under seamonkey does not work. however, I just found the new command mozilla-xremote-client that does work now for seamonkey. My question is the command is only /usr/lib64/mozilla-seamonkey-1.0.5/ this directory and /usr/lib64/mozilla* has mozilla mozilla-1.7.12 mozilla-seamonkey-1.0.3 mozilla-seamonkey-1.0.5 Is it an oversite that the mozilla-xremote-client is not in the "normal" bin places? After updates I can manually go out to machines and change sym links or anything how can a sym link automatically be updated to the new mozilla-xremote-client after a yum update? Thanks, Jerry

Any time you have a "backup mx" server that does not do recipient validation for the domains it serves not only is it going to receive a lot of spam, it is going to be producing a lot. This is exactly the type of thing that lands IP addresses in blacklists in my experience. That being said you should be able to whitelist the IP of the blacklisted host before you do the rbl-checking. I know how to do this with postfix but not sendmail. I am not a sendmail user, but there are some sendmail users on the list who may be willing to help there. My guess is that if you post to the mailing list of the MTA in question you may raise their ire a bit as you seem to be trying to solve a problem further downstream than you should be (idiots on your network). I would fix your local problem (if you can). alex

ISA sound cards and stuff

I've created kernel-isa and kernel-isasmp packages (currently i586, there'll be i686 version soon too). Basically, it is centosplus kernel with ISA Plug and Play, ISA and PCMCIA sound cards and ISA network cards enabled. The change to kernel spec file to add these two packages was fairly simple, and I hope this might find the way into centosplus kernel. If maintainer(s) of centosplus kernel are interested, I can email the patch for the spec file and four additional kernel config files. I've tested it on my old laptop that has built-in ISA sound card (ESS ES1878). Kudzu and automatic sound card detection didn't work, however after I manually added entries to /etc/modprobe.conf, it all worked nicely. I had to manually specify io, irq, and dma settings in the options line, and I guess the same may be true for most ISA hardware. I don't really have anything Plug and Play to test, and no ISA network cards anymore. Anyhow, if anybody does have, it would be nice if (s)he could test if all works OK. The Plug and Play is in kernel, no userland tools should be needed (hopefully). The only sound card missing is Wavefront. The source code for device driver needs some updating (there seem to be a patch floating around somewhere though, haven't tested it yet). The way it is now, it produces unresolved symbols if compiled. I see these packages mostly useful for folks with older laptops (ISA based sound cards, buying cheap PCI card is no option on laptops). Also for folks with older motherboards that have run out of PCI slots, but still have a few free ISA slots. The packages are signed with my PGP key (same as the one used for this email, you can grab it from most PGP key servers). compaq r4000

I am trying to install x86_64 on a compaq r4000 laptop. booting the CD I have tried text mode only and graphicaly mode. I see the normal stuff flying by and I just get a black screen (in text for graphic install). I have tried linux acpi=off apci=off nousb nopcmcia linux noprobe all result in the same black screen. Once the screen goes black the CD is still being accessed but the screen is just black. I have tried CTRL-ALT-F1 or F2 and still nothing. CTL-ALT-DEL does reboot the machine. Anyone seen this? any ideas? the machine is compaq r4000, turian 64 bit cpu. ATI video. windows on the same machine works fine. jerry

Hello, Which http proxy to choose nowadays? Squid? But as far as I understand it is single process which sounds not too effective for current dual cpu dual core servers. Apache? Something else? Load can reach 1000-1500 simultaneous but slow speed connections (mobile phone clients). From more advanced features I need just possibility to redirect requests to certain domains to another proxy. When you connect a USB device to a host running the RHEL4-x64 operating system, then try to access the USB from the VMware guest, the following error message appears: The Existing driver (usbhid) could not be successfully disconnected. (operation not permitted) Unload the driver manually then try again <OK>. In this situation, you cannot unload the driver manually from the host, because it does not exist as a module—it is compiled directly into the RHEL4-x64 kernel. Normally, this situation is not a problem for VMware software, but the kernel does not support the required ioctl (control device) function to allow VMware to disconnect the device from the usbhid driver. As a workaround, you can recompile the host's kernel with usbhid as a module, then manage its removal with rmmod. However, because the usbhid driver is necessary to allow the host and guest operating systems to interact with a USB mouse and keyboard, removing the module from the recompiled kernel may not be appropriate for your system. You may need to use an upgraded kernel or a different operating system instead. thx John Rose

I would love to participate in such a list. From a subscriber point of view, I would think a 'CentOS A/S' list would be both pertinent and manageable from a volume standpoint. I know this is a bit to the side, but really for many of us sysadmins, Spam is much harder to deal with than any other single portion of running a CentOS server. I'm rebuilding the centosplus kernel with ISA P&P and ISA some devies enabled. This is well worth checking out and I would guess that any well-maintained MTA would support this type of thing. So your rbl checks/helo checks/hostname and mx checks happen before the mail is received. This greatly reduces the amount of processing time on the MTA and allows it to handle far more mail in these spam-predominant times. You don't want to block most of your spam with a perl script IMHO. On our MTA, between the aforementioned and greylisting we block enough spam for it to be manageable on the back end with very, very few false-positives and close to zero maintenance. I'm sure that if we wanted to block more we could spend a lot more time setting up traps/writing SpamAssassin rules etc. But we're quite happy with this setup. FYI, rbls we use are: relays.ordb.org list.dsbl.org sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org <-- best one dul.dnsbl.sorbs.net the last being the only one I've seen any false positives on and only 2 since we set it up. Logwatch sendmail errors... What does it mean ?

Also, the use of spamcop should (in my opinion) be suggested with a caveat that the user read up on their own description of their criteria for blocking mail. I have seen large email providers and even ISPs etc blocked by this list, even if temporarily. Just my 2 cents, Alex

detecting ECC errors?

How do you detect ECC memory errors when CentOS is booted? Just had a strange hardware error where a server machine hang during anaconda install it passed memtest86 test but the bios dmi log showed dimm bank 1b had failures. Now I wonder what would happen if a machine running in production would get such problems, how do you detect it without having to go into bios? Hints on what to use? Chris

I've searched Pessulus (included in GNOME admin tools by default according GNOME docs) whitout success. I've tried to compile Sabayon (the CentOS rpm is not avaiable I think) but there are a lot of dependencies to resolve. ¿Any ideas? Help request...recovering LVM on centos 4.2

I installed a Centos 4.x system using a lvm install across four HDDs. It is my first install using LVM. System had a power-failure and stopped booting up. A new trainee simply took out the HDDs and restarted the file-server on a fresh HDDs. Now the problemis that the four HDDs have data. But the order of the HDDs (of install....1st primary, 2nd primary etc.) is unknown. Earlier we used to boot with knoppix live cd and recover data through rsync. Knoppix is not automatically recognizing lvm partitions. My query is to ask for step by step instructions on finding & mounting my lvm partitions correctly using knoppix or installing earlier hdds one by one in the new file-server & restoring data to users. Pointers on any howtos or detailed examples of recovery would also be appreciated. With best regards. Sanjay.

DMA disabled on SATA disk with Core Duo/i955 machine (Inspiron 6400)

I am trying to use CentOS 4 on this machine and it does not allow me to set DMA to 1, it just says that it is not possible. I have tried updating to the latest release and it still won't work. I have searched for it on Google and there is a thread mentioning the same machine and CentOS, but none of the solutions (-p, -X 12) seem to work at all and there is no "it works!!!!!" message. Is there anyway I can get DMA working or will I have to wait for CentOS 5? Will any of the "unsupported" kernels work? (I would try Ubuntu's kernel on CentOS, as I am successfuly using that distribution, but it is a bit stupid not to use SELinux and it probably wouldn't work either). You don't need a Red Hat subscription to get any SRPMs from RHEL. The GPL requires that they provide them for free. I believe that applies even th RHWAS, since that's still based on GPL'ed Linux code. In fact, this will cause problems if you need to revert back to your old kernel. You just need to install a new kernel module compiled for that version of your kernel. If you install the entire driver package, you will be installing new versions of all the related libraries, too. Then if you revert to the earlier kernel, that kernel module be an earlier version that doesn't match the version of the newer libraries, and you'll have a similar problem. Then to fix this one, you'll have to install the earlier kernel sources to recompile the kernel module for that kernel... And so on, and so on... If you know you'll never revert to the earlier kernel, it's okay to just install the whole new driver package. If you might revert, it's better to learn how to install just the kernel module. I forget the exact syntax, but if you do 'man nvidia-installer', all the details are there. Even better, HP supplies the nvidia drivers as RPMS. These RPMS are for RHEL, and include a script /etc/init.d/nvconfig. At startup, this script checks to make sure that the current kernel has an nvidia module. If it doesn't find one, it installs just the kernel module, no fuss no muss. The HP RPMS are just the nvidia drivers repackaged into RPM form. I recommend either using those RPMs, or at least extracting the /etc/init.d/nvconfig script from the RPM and be done with it. That's what I did. IBM x305 slowdown?

Hello: I have an odd problem with an IBM EServer XSeries 305 (aka x305). Sometimes it seems to just sit there, completely unresponsive to the command line (ssh and console), for several seconds. Other times it works normally. top will sometimes die with a floating point error while waiting for it to start. When top does work, it often shows a system load of 0.5, with high interrupt load. At first I though that the tg3 driver was not playing nicely, so I disabled the onboard NICs and installed a 3Com card. This seemed to clear up the problem, but it's now returned two days later. System is running CentOS 4.4, no X, Apache and MySQL. CPU is a P4 1.8GHz 512MB RAM 40GB ATA-100 disk Any suggestions on where to look next are appreciated. --Chris

Best backup software for linux

We are running backup softwares for incrementals/differentials and full backups with variouse softwares currently using dirvish scripts + amanda .. what is everyones views on other opensourced backup software? is there anything better or other options we have missed? python-interactive for CentOS/EL 4

Hi all, Could anyone point me in the right direction for a package that provides the 'interactive' module for Python? I need to do some SSH stuff in Python so I grabbed python-paramiko from RPMForge (as always, thanks Dag & co.). Paramiko appears to be dependent on python-crypto but the RPM doesn't require it.. The best backup arrangement I've used is rysnc to another system. I have it worked out in a very nice way to automate offsite storage to my colo. I never recommend Arkeia to anyone... $HOME variable not set from init script

Hi, I'm using Centos 4.4 with: mimedefang.org + spamassassin.org Mimedefang(MD) is a perl program that calls SpamAssassin(SA) perl module. The problem I'm getting is that from update 4.4, SA does not seems to find the $HOME variable only when it is called during system boot. If you later login as root and run: $ service mimedefang restart then SA does indeed find the $HOME variable I checked the /etc/init.d/mimedefang file and the chain of commands seems to be this: /etc/init.d/mimedefang -> daemon function from /etc/init.d/function -> /sbin/runuser SpamAssassin perl module is called from the mimedefang perl program. I'm thinking that /sbin/runuser is the root cause of the problem. My questions are: - does /sbin/runuser set the $HOME at boot time? - should /sbin/runuser be called with the -l option? Mail forwarding on a dynamic IP address.

I have a Cyrus installation with postfix and openXchange. I get the mails from catchall account with procmail and distribute with the mail server. Now I have a new site office where couples of staff members are going to be relocated. Since we have only an ADSL line on site office if there any way I could forward the mails for these staff members to another Mail Server with dynamic IP address? Any input will be really appreciated. ARC SERVE BACKUP.

Recently we have started using Arc serve backup. The Arc server and the tape library are connected to a Windows 2000 server machine and the data files are stored on many Samba file servers. I have Linux Client Agents installed on all Linux Machine. Now the problem is that when Arc Serve backup the file it always backup the full files irrespective of setting for a differential backup. I think the Arc serve is not able to set Archive bit on the file system. But it does for windows. Has any one in the list experienced this type of problem? Any advice or guidance would be really appreciated. Thanks Rajeev R. Veedu
