What do you mean the box cannot get out to anyplace? What apps etc. Are you certain it is not a firewall or DNS issue? What are you trying and are there any errors? rgmanager Hanging at shutdown

HI All I'm working on a test cluster system with two computer system, both are almost the same spec... the problem i'm having is the service I create in the services are not shown in the cluster manager tab on the cluster configuration, and when I go to reboot the systems the rgmanager service hangs and I need to push the reset button on the system to reboot. The errors started back up immediately during the boot process when I turned it back on. The log entries are adjacent...usually with the exact same timestamp. There are no other errors mixed in with them. I was able to get the system to boot yesterday. It triggered a raid rebuild which finished last night. The last batch of errors happened at 4am and the system appears to be running normally now. Connections? Power supply going bad? Already reseated all of the cables. I even moved the drives to two different SATA ports on the MB. Power supply...maybe, but not my first guess. Lost path to root directory!

I'll admit I am new to LVM2, but I have got myself in a bad spot. I renamed the LVM volume and volume group so that I can keep track of what is in them. I have changed grub's menu.lst, /etc/fstab, and /etc/mtab, but somewhere else there is still something telling lvm that my root drive is on VolGroup00. Where is it, and how do I convince it that VolGroup00/Volume00 (or whatever the defaults are) is now DriveC/Centos? I suspect it may be hiding in initrd (compressed). Wherever it is, it brings the boot process to a screeching halt with a kernel panic when it tries to pivot mount the root drive. Until I get this figured out, my Centos install is dead, and I am back on my old Mandrake install. Ted Miller

Hard drive errors

One of my CentOS boxes has started giving me errors. The box is CentOS-4.4 (i386) fully updated. It has a pair of SATA drives in a software raid 1 configuration. The errors I see are: ata1: command 0xca timeout, stat 0x50 host_stat 0x24 ata1: status=0x50 { DriveReady SeekComplete } Info fld=0x1e22b8, Current sda: sense key No Sense ata2: command 0xca timeout, stat 0x50 host_stat 0x24 ata2: status=0x50 { DriveReady SeekComplete } Info fld=0x1e2598, Current sdb: sense key No Sense If it was just coming from one drive, I would say it was a bad drive, but this is happening on both drives. Help with dhclient.conf & vendor options

I have a test CentOS 4.4 workstation that I am trying to configure to use vendor options from a W2003 DHCP server. A vendor class with the custom options has been created on the windoze box and I seem to be receiving the info in the vendor-encapsulated-options shown in the lease file. What I don't know is how to decode these options so that the CentOS client uses them. I have searched the web and read the man pages and come up with a configuration for the /etc/dhclient.conf but as yet I am unable to get the extra options to work and to be honest I don't fully understand how the dhclient.conf should be written. Hi, I have an old server that originally was a RedHat 8 server. Then I upgraded to RedHat 9, then Tao Linux 1 and last to CentOS 3 when tao was discontinued. Yes I know that this was probably not the smartest thing in the world but now this is the case and I don't want to reinstall it. Now the question. In yum.conf I have distroverpkg=redhat-release and cat /etc/redhat-release gives: CentOS release 3.7 (Final) But when I run yum update the release reported back is 1.0 yum update Gathering header information file(s) from server(s) Server: CentOS-1.0 - Addons Server: CentOS-1.0 - Base Until now I have manually changed yum.conf and replaced $relesever with whatever version I had but why is $relesever replaced with 1.0 ? How to reattach to a failed ssh session or process

Hi, is there a way to "reconnect" to a ssh session that was disconnected and left running processes in the linux server? I know that's the purpose of the screen command, but just to spread know-how, is that possible? Example: 3441 pts/0 S+ 0:00 nano /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf I remotely connect to a machine via ssh and started to edit apache conf and i did not used screen (me bad). The session timed out due to an internet glitch and I got disconnected. How can I reattach (speaking in screen terms) to that ssh session or gain control to the nano process (or any other)? Software versus hardware RAID performance.

With the Dell OpenManage question on my mind (and having seen it answered very well), I was reminded of an interesting and a little surprising thing I saw yesterday. I upgraded a PowerEdge 2850 from CentOS4 to Fedora Core 5 (keeping everything updated for GNUradio to run on CentOS 4 became more of a job that it should have) for our pulsar data processing machine (it has a GNUradio Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) attached USB 2.0), which has a Dell PERC 4e/Di RAID controller, two 72GB 10k U320 SCSI drives, and four 146GB 10k U320 SCSI drives. Well, during installation of a sound card (so we can actually listen to the dedispersed, phase-aligned, and detected pulsar chirp audio), something happened to the RAID firmware, so I put the PERC in SCSI-only mode and installed anyway (I needed to get the install done, and not spend a lot of time troubleshooting the RAID firmware not found message right now, as I need to demonstrate the pulsar receiver Friday evening). Ok, the two 72GB drives are set up RAID1, and the four 146GB drives are set up striped, RAID0. The two 72's are on channel 1, and the four 146's are on channel 2. Under CentOS 4 with the hardware RAID running, the four 146's (hardware RAID0) have a raw read performance of abut 150MB/s, which I thought was pretty good. Now, the box has dual 3GHz Xeons (it needs them for the pulsar dedispersion algorithm's FFT's, particularly when we refine it to do dedispersion in real-time). With FC5 installed, and the four 146's running software RAID0, I am getting nearly 240MB/s throughput (with other processes running). The box feels significantly more responsive; the GNUradio build with the PERC running in hardware RAID mode took about thirty minutes; with it running in LSI MPT SCSI mode it's taking half that time to build and install. The reason to run RAID0 instead of RAID5 is due to the ephemeral nature of the data being stored on the 146's; with the USRP, I need to record data at 32MB/s with no dropouts (1 channel, 8 megasamples per second, 12 bit samples (16 bit words), quadrature encoding (two12 bit samples (I and Q) per sampling interval); this data is then reduced post recording into just a few hundred megabytes, after dedispersion and phase processing; the need for raw sustained throughput even under load is critical. Page allocation failure and slow system

Hi all. Every few days I am getting a message that looks like the one I have cut and pasted below. It is accompanied by a severe slowdown of the system. In fact, it's practically locked. The machine runs gnome-desktops for 40 users plus about a hundred sessions of a curses based point of sale software, plus a few other functions, so it's a busy machine. Dual Xeon 3.2GHz processors. 4096MB ram. 8192MB swap. During this period, I'm seeing lots of swapout. sar reports 266 pages per second averaged over that 10 minute period. I'm thinking that I have a runaway process, but have not been able to see one of these instances for myself at the time it is happening. I've set up a monitor to record the highest rss size process minute by minute, which should tell me more about what is happening. But I don't really understand what the message below is saying. It looks like I still have plenty of swap left, so why the page allocation failure? Thanks for any enlightenment. Dell OpenManage installation on CentOS4

I have a Dell 1950 box on evaluation with 2 SATA drives connected to the on board Dell PERC 5/i with the disks set up as a mirror I've installed CentOS4.4 (x86_64) on the system and now I'm trying to install/configure/use the Dell OpenManage tools that came on a CD with the system. I've installed the tools using the provided install script and they appeared to install OK. I'm primarily interested in the tools to monitor the RAID controller - but if I type: omreport storage controller -fmt lst I get: No controllers found Also, if I use the Web interface, I only get 'Diagnostic' menus - nothing about configuring/monitoring the storage. As I've never used OpenManage before, I'm not sure what to expect from it ... Does anyone know if I have to do anything special to get these OpenManage tools to work with CentOS4? rpm problem after upgrade

Hi, I have upgraded Centos from 3.x to 4.3. The upgrade apparently didn't go too bad. I had to do the upgrade remotely, and I used as a base the post at http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=382 I rebooted the server, and it works. But yum does not work anymore, apparently due to some conflict between rpmlibs and selinux. This is the error that I get: -------------------------- There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/rpmmodule.so: undefined symbol: rpmtsSetREContext Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is: 2.3.4 (#1, Feb 22 2005, 04:09:37) [GCC 3.4.3 20041212 (Red Hat 3.4.3-9.EL4)] -------------------------- These are the relevant rpms that I have installed in my system: python-2.3.4-14.1 rpm-4.3.3-13_nonptl rpm-libs-4.3.3-13_nonptl yum-2.4.2-2.centos4 any suggestion? Ownership of /dev/snd/*

I have several users using a machine running CentOS 4.4. For some reason, the ownership of /dev/snd/* seem to get left with a user when he has logged out (me at the moment) which means that no one else can use sound. Can anyone suggest why this might be happening, or give some pointers? Thanks Joe

New 4.4 install PHP security concern

Hello everyone. I am an FC2 refugee that's been lurking for a while. I am finishing up a Centos 4.4 build and am going through looking at security issues. In running a nessus scan I am finding it complaining about the versions for php, php-ldap, php-mbstring and php-pear. The complaint indicates that a much newer version of this exists and specifically names php-5.0.4-4.centos4 (by way of example). In researching this I am finding that this is not deemed to be part of the upgrade path for the default version in 4.4. I am also finding numerous issues with this "recommended" version breaking things right and left. I've searched the forums and the web so I decided to post here. Has anyone replaced the stock php (and related items) build and been perfectly happy with the results? Any reason why this "newer" version of php is not part of the natural upgrade path? Any writeups by anyone that has walked this path already? Thanks in advance! -- Eucke

Are the problems with yum in the Centos 4.3->>4.4 upgrade process due to a forked or obsolete version of yum? Root directory ownership/perms

Centos 4.3 Hi All: I just shot myself in the foot by change the owner/perms on the contents of the root directory (my bad!!!). I have done a quick compare with a running RHEL3U8 system and think I have every thing back to what it should be except for new directories media and selinux. Can someone out there currently running 4.3 send me an "ls -l" of their root directory so I can make sure I have got everything back as it should be? Alternately is there some command within Linux that will fix these up for me (we used to have something like this on SCO OSR5 but I have not been able to locate anything for Linux)? pptp vpn through CentOS 4.3.

Hello, We can't connect to our pptp server through our CentOS gateway with a XP client. The linux client is working but not the XP client. I know for a fact that the pptp server is not the problem because if I connect the XP machine directly to the Internet the pptp vpn is working. I know about the pptp-conntrack-nat patch, I compiled the 2.4.9 kernel, with patch-o-matic-ng-20060511.tar.bz2 without any problem. But compiling iptables end with this error: make: *** [extensions/libipt_connlimit_sh.o] Error 1 I'm wondering if we really need that patch, because that patch seems to be only needed when you want simultaneous pptp connection, which is not my case. I only want to be able to make a simple pptp connection. Any pointers? Thanks.

One of my servers is complaining with this error now that I have updated to CentOS 4.4. I am now running postfix-2.2.10-1.RHEL4.2.mysql_pgsql.c4 from the centosplus repository. I had been running postfix-2.1.5-4.2.RHEL4.mysql.centos4 from the centosplus repository. I also have the following MySQL related packages installed: mysql-devel-5.0.22-1.centos.1 pam_mysql-0.6.0-1 mysqlclient14-4.1.14-4.2.c4.1 php-mysql-5.0.4-5.centos4 perl-DBD-MySQL-2.9004-3.1 mysql-5.0.22-1.centos.1 mysqlclient10-devel-3.23.58-9.2.c4 mysqlclient14-devel-4.1.14-4.2.c4.1 mysql-server-5.0.22-1.centos.1 mysqlclient10-3.23.58-9.2.c4 The MySQL 5 packages are from the centosplus repository. hi... if i have a machine that i want to be able to automatically ssh into multiple child machines within the network, do i have to create a key for the parent machine, and supply the key to the child machines, or do i create a key for each child machine, and supply the keys to the parent? thanks

unsupported sector size 4096 on /dev/sda

Hi list, I just received a storage array and created a 3TB LUN with a block/sector size on the disks of 4096. When I boot the our centos-4.4 box attached to this array I get the "unsupported sector size 4096" message: Remounting root filesystem in read-write mode: [ OK ] ERROR: unsupported sector size 4096 on /dev/sda. No RAID disks Setting up Logical Volume Management: [ OK ] Checking filesystems Checking all file systems. [/sbin/fsck.ext3 (1) -- /scratch] fsck.ext3 -a /dev/hdb1 /scratch: clean, 90/14663680 files, 485450/29304560 blocks [ OK ] Mounting local filesystems: [ OK ] Any ideas as to why centos does not like the 4096 sector size on /dev/sda? What are the supported sector/block sizes in centos on disks/LUNs? Eventually I will be creating an LVM and ext3 file system on this. Any one know what the file system size limits on LVM/ext3 are? You generate the key pair on the client (what you called the parent) and then copy the public portion to each server (what you called the child). Assuming I have a firewire card with a supported chipset, is there anything special I need to do in order for the kernel to recognize the card? Shouldn't kudzu "wake up" and configure the card when I boot up after installing it? This is a brand spanking new 4.4 system and a supported Agere chipset firewire card. I'm having trouble tickling devices connected to the card. In particular, I'm trying to mount a firewire external DVD device. Gnome Desktop Screensaver Security Lock Override?

We deployed our first CentOS-4 based workstation this past spring to see if we can conveniently replace all, or at least most, of our MS-Win based user systems with Linux boxes instead. Generally this trial unit has proved a success but there is one lingering problem that I cannot seem to find a straight-forward answer to: Is there an administrator override to a user's password protected screensaver terminal lock? So far the solution seems to have been brute force system resets and I am not happy with this caviler approach to what should be a simple, and safe, administrative procedure. So, is there an equivalent function to MS-Win's administrator login to force entry into a locked terminal and make it available for others? OK guys and gals ... can we please stop all the fighting? When technical questions are asked, they should be answered. I lot of people on this list have something that a lot of newbies need ... experience. So answering a question with "RTFM" or "JFGI" is not going to impart any of your experience ... which is one of the things they need and want. Also ... if someone attacks you, you should not respond in kind, but should try not to flame or bait people. It take more than one person to get these things going, and just a little restraint on both people's parts could prevent problems. Centos 4.4 Install bug

To the Centos maintainers: We tried to install Centos 4.4 i386 (i686 / Athlon) on a Dual Opteron 254 Iwill DK8N MB, 1GB (4 x 256M) system with a 3ware 9500S-4 and 4 x 80 GB disks in a RAID 10 array. Both tries caused Centos to first kernel panic until we turned off IO-APIC in the BIOS. Both tries also only loaded the UP kernel and did not load the smp kernel on the machine. The smp kernel was not even installed on the machine. The BIOS see 2 cpu's and so did 4.3. There seems to be a CPU qty discovery problem during install. When the smp kernel is installed from rpm it works fine and even enables numa properly. We used the Net boot i386 iso image and loaded the machine from over the network. We then tried the x86_64 version with the same results. Any suggestions??? Sep 13 12:18:56 sfe rc.sysinit: Checking root filesystem failed I had updated the box a few days ago but I had not rebooted with the new kernel. After the reboot, I get the root filesystem is not marked clean message and also that it was not mounted read-only. I supplied the root password, remounted read-only, did the obligatory fsck and hit ctrl-D. Guess what? I get the same message! In addition, there were no error messages during the fsck to boot. Anyone else encounter this?

Hello list, johnny, karanbir, rodrigo, william, all, Looks like some changes in 4.4 with openssl behavior I thought to ask about now that things have quieted down slightly since release. I use openssl with my nagios nrpe plugins, and now am getting a "could not complete SSL handshake". I will of course post to nagios list but first want to find out from centos side some key info re: 4.4/openssl [-if any, maybe no change at all?] since this all worked fine in 4.3, and it probably won't be too hard to do so in 4.4. : ) In doing an rpm -qa | grep openssl I am actually seeing two instances of openssl installed (Is that even possible?), when on a 4.3 box the output shows only one: ### box that's not doing proper SSL handshake openssl-0.9.7a-43.11 openssl-devel-0.9.7a-43.11 xmlsec1-openssl-1.2.6-3 openssl-0.9.7a-43.11 box that's working properly: # rpm -qa | grep ssl openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 xmlsec1-openssl-1.2.6-3 openssl-devel-0.9.7a-43.8 Background: 4.3 box with the issue was built with a custom RPM that we made that compiles apache with SSL. (different from the working box which is 4.3 and had a source compile and no ssl calls), Then I installed net-snmp, net-snmp-utils, and net-snmp-devel, (where in 4.3 all I had to do was edit /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf) which had a dependency for openssl, which it satisfied via yum. Perhaps the problem lies with the custom apache rpm? Our yum repo uses DAG. File perms are perfectly matched to working machine, so we know it's not that. -any ideas p.s. was snmp removed since 4.3? p.p.s. I never had to config tcpwrappers before in 4.3, should I do so now in 4.4? -karlski

Thanks for the response. The real concern comes from administrators or other less technical staff logging into the box, and getting concerned at the amount of memory used up. Although user education is always positively accepted, the general comfort level would be much higher if they could login to a host and not see that 98% of memory is in use. Regarding performance, this isn't much of a concern, although this host is intermittently hit with large work loads (which is why the kernel cache reaches the point of consuming all memory) which consume much memory, and another thought was that when these sporadic work loads proceed, there would be a slight performance hit waiting for free memory to be available as the cache is cleared. If this thought is misguided please let me know. Either way, what would be the correct method for tuning the kernel parameters? Pentium M in desktop system.

I have a Gigabyte 8S661FXMP motherboard. It had a P4 2.4Ghz processor in it. I have a laptop which cant be fixed and has a Pentium 4 M 2.8Ghz. I put the Pentium M in my desktop and it boots fine and runs fine, yet I have only been running it for about 30 minutes and shut it down. I have now run it for a complete 2 days without lock ups or anything. I have just been letting it idle, although I did do a defrag of a 120Gig hard drive which the hard drive was thoroughly fragged. So that was the first intensive thing done to my desktop with the pentium M processor. I runs at a cool 24 degress C. I did read that some laptops were socket 479 but i double checked my laptop and it is definitely socket 478. Both my desktop and laptop are socket 478. When I boot my system up, it does tell me that its a Mobile processor. What kinda issues would I need to look for as far as capatibility issues. I kinda took the situation as, it boots up and runs so it should be fine.

Strange screen-blanking problem

My desktop at work is CentOS 3.8, using the motherboard's onboard Intel 865 (82865G) graphics controller. Most of the day today I've been having sporadic instances where the screen simply goes black for about 2 seconds. It has nothing to do with whether I'm using the mouse or keyboard (or not) and the delay before it comes back on is not correlated to whether I *continue* to use the mouse or keyboard. This has happened a few times before. Sometimes the system is up for weeks at a time without showing any sign of this, sometimes it re-appears every few days. I've tried shutting down and restarting X11, but that doesn't get rid of it -- it seems only a full reboot will do so. And the longer I wait to reboot, the more often it happens. It doesn't seem to be related to the clock or to ntp (I've seen ntp clock syncs trip the screen saver in X11 before), I've tried shutting down ntpd without any change in the behavior and the system clock is not drifting from other machines on the LAN either way. There's nothing in the log files indicating any activity that might be connected. Anyone have a clue where I might begin looking? Having to reboot a linux machine with only 6 days of uptime galls me.

Using CentOS 3 in and LVS?

Is it possible? For LVS you have to deal with something called the ARP problem (viz., the realservers should not respond to ARP requests for the hardware address associated with the virtual IP). This is solved with some sysctl stuff for kernel 2.2.x and for 2.4.26+, but of course CentOS 3 is 2.4.21. There's a kernel module "noarp" that's suppoed to work for all 2.4.x kernels but I can't get its configure to work properly. Does anyone have any experience with this module? Is there an RPM somewhere?

My yam.conf is identical to above except that I've removed the 'os' line and added this: iso = CentOS-$release-$arch-disc?.iso Yam now populates the RPMS.os directory with links into the ISO mounts, but it does not create the repodata directory. I'm going to attempt to create it myself with the createrepo command, but it should happen automatically, right? -- Bowie

CentOS "upgrade" from fedora core ?

'Trying to figure out if it might be possible to set things up such that i could "upgrade" (rather than an "install") from a Fedora Core installation to CentOS. 'Had guessed that perhaps changing/faking the contents of /etc/redhat-release might do the job, but ... that didn't seem to go. Anyone know how it might be accomplished? Or perhaps this isn't a reasonable thing to do(?). Thanks *----->

convert files with ghostscript to tiff gets black page with xview

I am using oowriter to just type a couple lines, export that as PDF, use ghostscript to convert to tiff then view with xview and my page is all black. I use the command to convert to tiff. gs -q -sDEVICE=tiffg3 -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -r204x196 -dNOPAUSE -sOutputFile=/tmp/faxme.g3 -- file.pdf xview /tmp/faxme.g3 The resulting file size is 9788 for faxme.g3 Have I done something wrong? Shrinking a volume group

I did something stupid when setting up a server which is now live. I think I'm stuck. I set up swap on Raid1 which is decidedly non-optimal. I'd prefer 2 independent swap partitions at the same priority. Here is the set up: /dev/sda1 + /dev/sdb1 -> md0 (raid1) md0 -> VolGroup00 VolGroup00 -> VG00LV00(/), VG00LV01(/home), VG00LV02(swap) I've gotten as far as : Turning off swap and removing LV02. Next step would be to shrink VG00. But it looks like you can only shrink a volume group by removing entire PV's. I only have 1 PV. So I think I'm stuck. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

Hyperthreading ON causes OOPS on boot

I just tried to install CentOS (x86_64 4.4 and i386 4.3, not both at once, when I found the 64bit version didn't boot, I tried the 32bit version, same result) on a dual Naconda Xeon system. I get an OOPS just after the IDE info is printed on the screen during boot (this is booting off the CD during the install phase). After mucking about with the bios settings (and many reboots later), I found with Hyperthreading off it boots and installs ok (installed the x86_64 version once I got it going). After YUM updating, and getting a new kernel I thought I'd try turning the Hyperthreading back on, crashed in the same spot during boot. Since I'm going to use it as a MySQL server and Hyperthreading seems to make MySQL slower, it not a problem that it won't work with Hyperthreading enabled, but it would be interesting to know why. Any ideas??? Its a ASUS NCL-DS with Dual 3.4G Xeons, 8G of DDR2 ram, and a 3ware raid controller 8500LP. Hi, I have one FC5 server and one CentOS 4.4 server and I want to stablish a VPN between them, i have read that VPNd could be an option, anybody know where do I find the rpm for CentOS or with repository should i have to install in order to get it? Anyone using fuse and/or sshfs under Centos 4.4?

Hi A search of google failed to show any prebuilt rpms for sshfs and fuse. I do see that fuse support is in 2.6.14 kernel which isn't a whole lot of help. Before I dive headlong into this has anyone successfully built fuse/sshfs against Centos 4.4. If so would you share your experience? Thanks Daveh

This is a small thing; apologize if it's been previously discussed. In user options for the CentOS-Announce mailing list options page: http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos-announce you can subscribe to architectures of interest. To receive posts about the i386 architecture, for example, the mailing list pattern (as a regexp) is: CentOS.4.i386 whereas the one for all 4.x architectures is: CentOS.4 The problem is that if you are only subscribed to the i386 subset you will miss architecture independent announcements, such as the recent ones regarding CentOS 4.4 availability. A solution would be to include a pattern for all relevant architectures on the subject line for general release announements, which would allow the existing regexp's to work. However this would make subject lines too long as John pointed out. Better might be to modify the existing regexps to additionally accept subject lines where no architecture is shown. Thanks, Neal

I recently upgraded my name server to CentOs 4.4 from CentOs 4.3 and bind was one of the many packages upgraded. I get the following message when performing an rndc reload " rndc reload rndc: connection to remote host closed This may indicate that the remote server is using an older version of the command protocol, this host is not authorized to connect, or the key is invalid." which odd as I am doing this on the master dns server for the zones. I made sure that my key in rndc.key and rndc.conf match. Anyone else having similar issues? Thanks, Eric

Hi, I've been playing with CentOS quite a bit lately (and I must say it's growing on me!! :) and I was now able to convince my boss that we could get a box and gradually start migrating our hosting from win2k3 to centos. So anyway, I've got a new box at the colo ready up and running - P4 3Ghz w/HT 2Ghz RAM 2x70Gb HDD, running Centos4.4 fully up-to-date. Now my two questions are; (1.) In terms of backup, I'd like to have a cron sending out an nightly incremental backup of user files. I'd also like to have HDA to be copied backed up entirely (maybe weekly) onto HDB (were're not going to use 140GB anyway!) so that is hda crashes, I`d swap both of the hdds and boot from the backup. Now for that second step, I was reading that dd was quite CPU intensive? Would there be other alternatives? Advices on doing backups? (2.) I've got no physical access to the box, and the box has obviously no video or sound. HI, I configured a minimum install on Centos 4.4 and then added postfix+dovecot+openwebmail I want to use Mondo Rescue (disaster recovery solution) and the program needs CD-R/RW and DVD-+R/RW support. What are the packages required to install via yum to provide support for the creation of CD/DVD? network prob on Centos 4.4/HP DL320 G2

Hi! I've installed Centos 4.4 on a machine at work (it's a HP Proliant DL-320 G2 rackmout server that serves my desktop). In recent days (Centos 4.4 has only been installed for a little over a week), like, since Wed or Thu last week, every time I reboot Kudzu wants to remove the network adaptors then reinstall them and breaks the network. I've gone to the point of disabling one of the network ports in the BIOS (since I only use one of them anyway), and at first it worked when I rebooted, after doing the obligatory net configuration. Then the next time I rebooted Kudzu again wanted to remove and reinstall the network and it again didn't work after the reboot. Today I had to reboot again (because X went nutso and I lost my mouse pointer--I know, a reboot is overkill, don't remind me) and once again it broke the network when it rebooted. The network config GUI applet could not activate the net, it kept complaining that the MAC address of the adapter was not the one it expected. I removed (as the previous time) all the NETWORK items from /etc/sysconfig/hwconf and rebooted again, after which it came up. But I fully expect it to be broken yet again when I reboot next time. This machine ran RHEL WS 2.1 for something like 3 years and never had this kind of trouble, even with both ports enabled in the BIOS. I always used the tg3 driver that came with Linux, not the driver that HP offers. The only RPM I've installed that I got from HP is the one that installs "hpasm", because that's the one that turns the fans from "screaming jet engine" into "low roar". (this system contains a dozen or so small fans, all of which rotate at a gazillion rpm, all not quite the same speed, so you get a dozen slightly different pitches, causing heterodyning and the resultant throbbing along with the screaming if you don't use the hpasm module.) Disabling IPv6 in Centos 4.x Experiences

Hi there, While I was looking "how to disable ipv6 under centos" I have found a gazzillion pages about how to do it and some of then even list things that i am not sure where they came from, so for the record I list most of them here in case someone else need them. Some of the methods involved the direct modification of system scripts, and I am against that so I wont list them here (removing the entire section of ipv6 calls in IFUP is not a good idea). How to disable ipv6 support in Centos 4.x Pick any method, a combo or all of them Method 1, add the line: alias net-pf-10 off to the /etc/modprobe.conf Method 2 Add to /etc/sysconfig/network file: NOZEROCONF=yes # Bonus: Disable the ugly generation of 169.254 zeroconf networks. NETWORKING_IPV6=no Note about method 2. I must mention the fact that I actually READ the entire ifup script and dependencies and I found that it calls at line 361: # if [ "${NETWORKING_IPV6}" = "yes" ]; then # /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-ipv6 ${CONFIG} However adding the NETWORKING_IPV6=NO has no effect whatsoever because even after a reboot the interfaces continue to load an ipv6 address. BTW it does the same for zeroconf and doesn`t work either. Method 3: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-XXXXX file; IPV6INIT=no So pick your best method or a combo and let us know which one worked for you: In my case Centos 4.3 2.6.9-34.EL i386 with a pair of 3COM 3c905CX lan boards did not responded to Method 1 and 2 and 3. So I'm still battling with this ipv6 thing. Let me know your comments. Revisited - No fullscreen on FreeNX

This topic came up some time back and I pretty much ignored it, but the "itch" came back to find out why. Searching through the FreeNX/knx list came up with the reason sessions did not come up full-screen even though the session definition was set to fullscreen. Apparently there is an oversight in /usr/bin/nxnode, the script is never retrieving the fullscreen flag from the parameters passed from the client. This is the case even in freenx-0.5.0-9.c4, the current version for CentOS 4. HAL Problems

Hi, since the last few days my system crashs at startup of gdm (on system boot). If I choose runlevel 2, the system doesn't crash. I found out, that HAL is the problem. After disabling hal (chkconfig haldaemon --off) no crashes appear. The system freezes completly so I can't look into the logfiles. I removed an reinstalled hal already, but nothing changed. I tried older kernels releases and nothing changed. Any help would be nice! Regards, Christian

Hi Friends I am configuring a mailserver , basically the working of this server is to fetchmail from remote server and we have one account that is catchall account and we are using procmail to distribute all mails properly to users, n i m building new server for my company but i m getting following error if i am sending mails from outside , if i am sending mail from my own domain then there is no problem procmail is working properly. plz help me out . i have remove my domain name by example . thanks This is the Postfix program at host internm.example.com.
