TARPIT target in iptables

Has anyone been successful at using the TARPIT target in iptables under CentOS 4? I am using CentOS 4.3, fully updated with iptables-1.2.11-3.1.RHEL4 and kernel-2.6.9-34.107.plus.c4 Doing a locate on TARPIT returns: # locate TARPIT /lib/iptables/libipt_TARPIT.so This makes me think that the TARPIT target would be valid, however when I try to use it, I get the following reponse: # iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j TARPIT iptables: No chain/target/match by that name I am following the example located at the Netfilter website for rule creation: http://www.netfilter.org/patch-o-matic/pom-extra.html#pom-extra-TARPIT I have *NOT* rebuilt my kernel, or any tools because on the surface, as it does not appear necessary. I need to install 32 bit version of firefox to enable java and flash, I've enabled the i386 CentOS base to install, but are a little insecure of installing the dependencies. Backspace key is sending Delete after update to 4.4 (tcsh issue?)

Maybe it was always sending Delete and I didn't notice it, but I have had the following in my .tcshrc file for ages (without realizing it): bindkey -b ^? i-search-back Before the update to 4.4, hitting the backspace key at the shell prompt deleted the previous character. Now it activates the search backwards function as instructed to do so by the bindkey directive. The question is, what changed to cause this? I never realized I had that bindkey statement (I have never used the search backwards function). Is this a change in tcsh? Has something changed in the X server? Here is the output from xev when pressing and releasing the Backspace key: KeyPress event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x2800001, root 0x48, subw 0x0, time 1593248, (136,112), root:(179,193), state 0x0, keycode 22 (keysym 0xff08, BackSpace), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (08) " XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (08) " XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x2800001, root 0x48, subw 0x0, time 1593358, (136,112), root:(179,193), state 0x0, keycode 22 (keysym 0xff08, BackSpace), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (08) " If I remove that bindkey command from my .tcshrc file, the Backspace key removes the previous character as expected. Is it better to rebuild or update my notebook for 4.4

Wow! With all the conversations here, and some things on my system, I am seriously thinking of taking another drive, install 4.4 on it, and then move my /home partition (I planned for such eventualities by putting /home on its own partition). Couple of questions: I did my current build with a ks.cfg on a floppy. Can I use the same information for 4.4 as I did for 4.3? That is none of the packages are version specific it seems. How can I figure out what I have added and add that to my ks.cfg? yum listgroup and yum list and compare to the content of ks.cfg? Is jre supplied by sun in this release? I really have a mess with Firebird. It is not recognizing the java plugin. I am going to go over my install notes again....

SELinux Strict Mode

According to http://www.redhat.com/magazine/006apr05/features/selinux/ there is a package named selinux-policy-strict, which contains a series of rules for correctly handling many situations (software) when using strict policy. Does CentOS have this package available ? If not, can someone make it available through Centosplus or Addon, for example ? This package is not part of the upstream main release, but according to the link above it is made available on their website for subscribers who want it. Anyway, I have just tried Fedora 4 package selinux-policy-strict-1.27.1-2.27.noarch.rpm. pppoe problems

I'm having problem connecting to my isp with my sangoma s518. Everything seems to run smooth and wanrouter are training to connect....but forever.. Now, to test the connection i mounted up my standard nic and my old dsl router, to establish a standard basic pppoe connection..... and I can't with centos. I spent 4 hours I think and needed two minits on my debian installation. Release 4.4 and MPC51 ethernet controller

When using 4.4 to install on gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2 motherboard basically an Nforce 410/430 chipset then network is not initially detect to perform a network install. It let me attempt to manually select a driver but I do not see the driver in the list. After installing the network works and the forcedeth driver is loaded. Is there a way to get this driver detected or manually loaded? THanks, jerry

ipw2200 Stats MT in /proc/net/wireless

In 5100 and 1100 series Inspirons Intel 2915abg cards work MUCH cooler than the original Broadcoms, don't choke up in hot weather like the original Dell cards and don't require ndiswrapper. (All of 2 Notebooks were tested outdoors at 98 deg F ambient. Dropouts occured in both Centos 4.4 & XP on these dual boot notebooks with the Dell Mini-PCI's, none with 2915's). The only problem is that there are no wireless stats showing up in /proc/net/wireless (running wpa2, although that shouldn't make a difference). The /proc/net/wireless file claims that the Extensions are at Version 18 which should include the ipw_get_wireless_stats() call. Dmesg tells me nothing of interest about this (admittedly noncritical) issue. What am I missing here? Is the appropriate version of ipw-firmware needed other other than 2.4 or 3.0 ? Cron Problem

Cron is sending me an email once per minute, the emails look like this: Subject: Cron <root@host> chown root:root /dev/shm/local/local5 && chmod 4755 /dev/shm/local/local5 && rm -rf /etc/cron.d/core && kill -USR1 7140 Body: chown: cannot access `/dev/shm/local/local5': No such file or directory I've un-installed and reinstalled the vixie-cron packages, I have verified that they are not corrupted by using rpm --verify vixie-cron, I have checked all the crontabs on the system there aren't any running every minute. I don't understand why this is happening, anyone have any insight? Thanks, Matt

CentOS 4.4 LILO Raid (also e2fsprogs in general)

i noticed that the 4.4 upgrade broke LILO on Raid... it gave errors on partitions not on the primary disk along the lines of "/dev/dis: no such device"... even explicitly installing the boot sector on each device in the array, while it allowed the system to boot, gave errors at boot time and did not display the CentOS boot screen anymore... i solved the problem by creating a package for the most recent version of LILO and installing that... with a few minor changes to "lilo.conf" everything was kosker for LILO install and boot... i even made a nice new 640x480x256 CentOS boot screen for it... there is one caveat to using the new LILO... the new version (or at least one above 22.x) must be booted once (text-mode) before LILO can correctly probe the video BIOS... so, the boot screen needs to be installed after an initial priming boot... afterwards, i did some thorough testing before deploying on any production servers... and noticed only one problem... the new version of LILO broke the "grubby" probe... primarily because "/boot/boot.b" is no longer needed... but also because the comparisons between "boot.b" and the actual boot sector aren't accurate anymore either... since i'd noticed that "grubby"'s probe for GRUB itself has been broken for a while... i decided a quick patch-job for the "mkinitrd" package was in order... my new package correctly identifies whether either LILO or GRUB has been installed at all, but lacks the careful byte comparisons that were the core of the breakage of the original "grubby"... it's possibly problematic... but i doubt it... and it solves more problems than it creates... anyways... that solved my 4.4 upgrade breakage... and... since i was writing to the list... i figured i should mention a rather serious, but extremely unlikely to happen, bug i noticed in "e2fsprogs" (specifically "e2fsck")... with the version on CentOS... "e2fsck" will cause some big problems and potential data loss on directories containing more than 1.2 million inodes... the first 1.2 million inodes will be ok... the next 1.2 million (max) will be saved to /lost+found as unidentified files... before it too fills up... and then everything else will just "vanish"... this problem is due to some incorrect math in the handling of the maximum inode size... and has already been fixed in e2fsprogs 1.38... so, my solution was to take the 1.38 Fedora Core sources and build a package for CentOS... if anyone is particularly interested... i have the SRPMS for my lilo, mkinitrd, and e2fsprogs packages... also, i have the pretty new CentOS boot screen (and a few others i made) and some working lilo configurations for switching over to them... all of which i could probably post somewhere public... but if they are really useful, i'd rather ship them along to someone more closely involved in maintaining CentOS... so as to "contribute" as best i could to everyone's future well-being as well... Marko I have 5 servers running CentOS. Four of them work fine with the 42 kernel. The fifth I use as a yum respository and when I try to use the 42 kernel I lose all network connectivity. Reverting to the earlier kernel on this box restores connectivity. I append some dmesg excerpts which suggest that the new kernel handles PCI (GSI) differently, but have not had the time to investigate further. Please let me know if you find a solution. vncserver startup issue

I installed vncserver via yum and when I reboot the server it does not want to start despite being set to start upon boot. Logging in via SSH and then issuing vncserver, I am able to get it running properly. I can't seem to figure this out. Yum upgrade to 4.4 problem

CentOS 4.3 (SMP, x86_64, Athlon64 X2) with all pre-4.4 release updates applied. Since I ran into the Yum issue at the previous upgrade, I first did yum upgrade to get the list of packages (6 to install, 206 to update). I then did yum upgrade yum (which passed without issues) yum upgrade sqlite (which passed without isseus). Fairly certain that yum now works correctly, I wanted to just do another small upgrade before doing the rest, and did yum upgrade samba [root@naboens ~]# yum upgrade samba Setting up Upgrade Process Setting up repositories Reading repository metadata in from local files <no progress> This seemed to hang, and a look at top showed yum consuming more and more memory, the system starting to swap and bog down and then become unresponsive (all swap exhausted, I was not quick enough to kill yum). I was able to reproduce this on a different machine (also x86_64, SMP and Athlon64 X2), so it seems to be an actual problem. As I can play around a bit more on this machine, I tried doing a yum upgrade (without specifying samba) and it behaves the same (ie yum consuming increasing amounts of memory while "Reading repository metadata (etc)". Postfix won't relay after update to CentOS 4.4

Hi Everyone, My CentOS 4.4 mail server is having problems sending mail after updating it to 4.4 Before the update, I did not have any problems. My ISP requires that email clients must authenticate to their mail servers before mail can be sent out. I setup smtp auth to get postfix to relay mail through the ISP's mail servers. Here's my config: main.cf -------- relayhost = [smtp.broadband.rogers.com] smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd smtp_sasl_security_options = sasl_passwd --------------- smtp.broadband.rogers.com blah@blah.com:password I've done the usual run through of config files after an update, and made some small changes to main.cf (just added in comments and examples that were in main.cf.rpmnew). When I try to send a message, this is the error I get: F060D1C068: to=<m3freak(a)rogers.com>, relay=smtp-rog.mail.yahoo2.akadns.net[206.190.36.18], delay=1, status=bounced (host smtp-rog.mail.yahoo2.akadns.net[206.190.36.18] said: 530 authentication required - for help go to http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-11.html (in reply to MAIL FROM command)) Just in case the ISP had done something, I manually tested authenticating to the ISP's mail server, and it worked just fine: Connected to smtp.broadband.rogers.com (206.190.36.18). Two identical machines, both running CentOS 4.3 plus all the errata. First one: yum update went for a while and hung. At the bottom of the yum.log file was this: Aug 31 06:58:01 Updated: control-center.i386 1:2.8.0-12.rhel4.5 Aug 31 06:58:09 Updated: iiimf-le-unit.i386 1:12.1-13.EL.5 Aug The python process was in the process list, but it was consuming no CPU time. I let it go for a couple of hours, then killed it and played with the duplicate removal script posted previously. Second one: I tried a combination of suggestions previously posted: yum clean all yum update yum sqlite python-sqlite python-urlgrabber python-elementtree yum clean all yum upgrade This also ran for a while and then hung in a similar fashion. Hi Everyone, I'm running a Postfix+Dovecot+SpamAssassin box in a DMZ. Everything is honkey dorey. Lately I've been thinking about moving Dovecot (for IMAP) into the internal network - I'd rather not store my mail on the CentOS 4 host in the DMZ. Not having done this before, I'm not quite sure what options I have. Also, I don't know if this is a good idea at all. So: 1. Should I just leave mail storage on the same box in the DMZ? 2. If the answer to 1 is no, what's the best way to get mail from the SMTP server in the DMZ to an IMAP server in the internal network? Here's what I've briefly considered: DMZ Postfix+SpamAssassin -> Internal Postfix+Dovecot DMZ Postfix+SpamAssassin -> Internal Fetchmail+Dovecot 3. Any tutorials for this out there, or even articles, etc., discussing using Postfix as a gateway? So far, I haven't found any that I've liked. Thanks in advance for any help. 4.4 yum update problem

On one of my machines yum hung up while installing the updates and could not be interrupted or killed. I rebooted the machine the next day, but now a 'yum update' reports: Error: Missing Dependency: openssh = 3.9p1-8.RHEL4.12 is needed by package openssh-askpass-gnome and Error: Missing Dependency: rpm = 4.3.3-13_nonptl is needed by package rpm-build even though rpm -q says those version are installed: #rpm -q rpm openssh rpm-4.3.3-13_nonptl openssh-3.9p1-8.RHEL4.12 Now what? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

updating base kernel when plus kernel installed

A while ago I installed 2.6.9-nnnn.plus.c4 (nnnn means version at that time, now at 42.0.2), but I have to boot with the base kernel, as the plus kernel does not seem to work with my Atheros card/drivers. Right now my base kernel is at: 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL and I have this feeling that is quite behind the current rev. I cannot figure out how to get kernel.i686 to upgrade. I can't even seem to get yum or yumex to list the package name for the current kernel rev.

kernel 2.6.9-42 is faster

Gents, Under 4.3 and the associated kernel it took 17 seconds to recompile my entire application on my amd 4800+ X2. Down from 1 minute and 20 seconds on my old platform. I just tried under the new 2.6.9-42 kernel and it is 15 seconds. So that modification to the kernel for disk improvement seemed to help my compile time... Just sharing... Great work on 4.4. Jerry

4.3 to 4.4 and Yum and Upgrade vs. Update

I'm wondering about yum update vs. yum upgrade. The man page says use upgrade (actually the obsoletes flag which is set in upgrade and not update) when doing something like a linux 8.0 to linux 9 upgrade. Something we can't do with CentOS, i.e. 3 to 4. So, is it better to use update or upgrade when going from 4.3 to 4.4? Doesn't RedHat call these "Quarterly Updates" and not "Quarterly Upgrades"? And, it seems that the folks having trouble were doing yum upgrade. I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the same difficulties when doing yum update? And --obsoletes.... seems like the man page for yum really doesn't say much about what this actually does.. but it sounds like something I don't want to use... sounds like it leaves obsoletes laying around? from man page "upgrade Is the same as the update command with the --obsoletes flag set." "If the --obsoletes flag is present yum will include package obsoletes in its calculations - this makes it better for distro-version changes, for example: upgrading from somelinux 8.0 to somelinux 9." " yum list obsoletes [regexp1] [...] List the packages installed on the system that are obsoleted by packages in any yum repository listed in the config file." Could this be what's causing the conflicts with sqlite? And if update vs. upgrade doesn't make any difference (from my first question).. Has a 'clear' direction for painless updating emerged? Driver for Symbios 8100S PCI SCSI?

I'm trying to install CentOS 3 on an OmniBook 800. (Am I insane?) The bootdisk.img gets things started just fine, but the closest driver on the drvblock.img disk is for the Symbios 53C896, and the Omnibook has a 53C810. Manually choosing the Symbios driver seems to discover scd0, but it's not able to load CentOS from the CD. (I've tried both the boot.iso from the os/i386/images directory, and Disk 1 from the regular set of install ISOs.) Any suggestions? Am I just out of luck? (The last Linux installed on this thing was RedHat 5.2, but that was overwritten with Windows 98 long ago.)

mount problem on LVM2 w/ kernel-2.6.9-42.0.2

Recently I update a server running CentOS 4.3 to kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2. After the update it had a problem to mount LVM partitions, showing the follow error during boot: No volume groups found Activating logical volumes Unable to find volume group "lvm1" ERROR: /bin/lvm exited abnormally! (pid 199) Creating root device Mounting root filesystem mount: error 6 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none Switching to new root switchroot: mount failed: 22 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Postfix and PostgreSQL

Hello all, I require Postfix to have PostgreSQL support. Unfortunatly the RPM (nor the SRPM or it's SPEC file) that ships with CentOS doesn't include this. The SRPM (and it's associated SPEC file) that are made by Simon Mudd ( http://postfix.wl0.org/en/ ) do have PostgreSQL support, so I have downloaded that, tweaked the SPEC file and rebuilt an RPM that has PostgreSQL support. However, I would like to get the RPM that ships with CentOS to include this also, I know I have to contact the upstream vendors Postfix rpm maintainer, but I don't know who that is. Does anyone know who I should contact? Thanks, Matt

Logwatch doesn't works on CentOS 3.8

All jobs that I have on cron works ok without problems, and system defaults crons too except logwatch. I have tried to run it manually without luck. How can I debug logwatch or how can I fix this? Dump problem on USB drive

Hi. I am running CentOS 4.3 on a small home server just dishing up mail, music etc. to the household. I had been doing irregular backups to a 160GB USB external drive /dev/sda1 mounted as /mnt/backup using tar. Then I read somewhere that dump was better so I tried that after clearing the drive (formatted as ext3). dump -0u -f /dev/sda1 /shared took a while to finish but gave no errors however ls showed no files and df -h showed /dev/sda1 to be 4.4T in size and 100% full. bootloader installed at wrong place during install

Hi, I've just started testing CentOS 4.4 installs. When installing on two mirrored drives, the bootloader got installed into the first partition, instead of MBR. It was a kickstart install, and I used "bootloader --location=mbr" in the kickstart file (which is also a default). However, when looking into /root/anaconda-ks.cfg file, misteriously it was changed to "bootloader --location=partition" by Anaconda!? I've noticed this happening only when installing on two mirrored drives. If installing on a single drive, the boot loader ends up in MBR as it should. The partition config was relatively simple. Two partitions on each disk, mirrored. One for /boot, one for LVM (which than contained everything else). New X crappy for older stuff?

While burning in a new desktop Epox KT-880 workstation, I'm running on my old K6-III at 360MHz. Before new X updates (put everything in today, kernel, elfutils, ntpd - Selinux issues? - xorg, ...) with my PCI ATI 7000 (Radeon) on a 19" Samsung 950b @ 1024x768 (one of 5 different resolutions I commonly use), I could scroll smoothly at reasonable rates. With the new stuff I get severe flickering. As if the screen is "blanking", showing a little, "blanking", showing a little, ... It's really horrible. Anybody else got some old stuff that does(n't) have symptoms? I'll say bye to this update shortly I guess, security be damned. I'm the only user and IPCop protects me. TIA BTW: 4.4? Anything left for that? :-) -- Bill

Repost: System crash on loading gdm revisited

Hello - I never heard back on this and continue to experience this bug. Can someone help me to locate the patch for this so that I can be sure it's included in my source? It's not happening on every boot, but about every other or third. And just as described in the bug report (the boot works OK, but at the end rather than GDM starting nicely, I get a "fuzzy" screen and the system crashes requiring a power cycle) but I don't get the "kernel BUG" message in my logs. If I should submit this a but report to bugs.centos.org, please let me know. CentOS 4.3 - MySQL - NIS user issue

Hi I have what i think is a strange issue - All my users are NIS users and they can access this box fine. I have a MySQL server running on this box that is running fine. The OS 'root' user can authenticate and use MySQL fine e.g. [root@xxxxxxx]# mysql -u bugs -pxxxx bugs Reading table information for completion of table and column names You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g. Your MySQL connection id is 5 to server version: 3.23.58 Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Minor 4.4 upgrade oddity

I ran "yum upgrade" early yesterday from a remote ssh login, but upon looking at the set of packages I decided to wait until I could sit at the console to reboot. So I declined to proceed with the upgrade when prompted. Later when I ran "yum ugrade" again, it found no packages to update. After some poking around checking the mirrors, running "yum clean headers", etc., I finally tried "yum clean all" and thereafter "yum ugrade" worked flawlessly. I've never seen this happen with "yum update", so I don't know why it would be different with "upgrade", but there you are.

LVM chown issues

Hi Everyone, I have got CentOS 64bit running on a Dell PowerEdge SC1850 with hardware raid 1. My LVM partions donot seem to honour chown commands for symbolic links. Is this normal? All other files and directories honour it.

No problems in 4.3-to-4.4 upgrade

Another data point: I updated 2 machines, one a P3-UP machine and the other a P3-SMP machine. Both were fully updated with the CentOS 4.3 errata releases. I did this on each machine: yum clean all yum -y update yum yum clean all yum upgrade No errors or warnings (beyond a few config files installed as .rpmnew) were seen during the upgrade process. I rebooted immediately after the upgrade was complete. In the 3 hours since upgrading I have seen no problems with the upgraded software. Good job, Johnny!

Upgrade 4.3 to 4.4 appeared to die half-way through

Interesting problem here...perhaps. I just upgraded about 6 machines this morning after syncing a local yum server with no problems...until I get to my personal laptop of course. I did the usual: yum update yum yum update It went about half way through and then the terminal seemed to just die. It just sat there stuck in limbo. I let it go for about 30 minutes and it never moved, so I killed the terminal, but yet yum was still running as a process which I had to kill. Reluctantly I rebooted, and everything came up ok, but I'm very hesitant to believe that things are tip-top. Is there anything I can do or anyway I can check anything to double check things are actually fine? The /etc/redhat-release shows ok: cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 4.4 (Final) I've been watching top and all that good stuff. All my services appear ok as well, but call me paranoid because I'm convinced something has to be wrong. Should I stop with my paranoia and just chalk it up to my bash session died, yum completed ok, but hung afterwards? Thanks! Max

FWIW this has served me very well when any new update comes out, whether there is a yum upgrade or not. yum clean all yum update yum yum clean all yum update or yum check-update | more and make choices later... etc man yum can help of course... I tend to wait until the highest traffic is gone too unless there is something specific I need bug or security wise. After you do your update, done forget to do updatedb, makewhatis, ... The locate for rpmnew has a couple items of interest and the locate for rpmsave returns one that occupies 24MB of your precious disks - /var/lib/Pegasus/prev-repository*. It compresses nicely to appx. 1MB, cpio bzipped --best. Change in your rndc key too, for DNS.

Hi, I just started a new page on the CentOS wiki called "InTheMedia" <http://wiki.centos.org/InTheMedia>. I'd like to collect sightings of CentOS in all (linkable) media formats on that page, like newspapers, news tickers, magazines on the web or even TV and Radio. If you've seen some report on the news about CentOS and you have a link - send this link and a short description to me, I'll add those to this page. If you have TV and Radio "sightings" and there's no linkable stuff, a short description (Where? Which station? What was said?) would be great. A more common interface to the wiki (like: You can edit stuff yourself) is still in the discussion. Oh, and I don't think several distrowatch pages or osnews will count. Yum updates packages for other arch too

Hi, I have the x86_64 arch on my server so therfore i expect that yum updates only x86_64 packages. With the last *yum update* i´ve noticed a strange behaviour while retrieving the needed packeges. As you you see, yum wants install packages for different architectures: glibc x86_64 2.3.4-2.25 base 4.9 M glibc i686 2.3.4-2.25 base 5.1 M . . . dmraid i386 1.0.0.rc11-3_RHEL4_U4 base 396 k and the list continues. Remote upload apache files

Hi all, I need to upload files to /var/www/html on our remote centos box. The perms on /var/www/html are stock from the install, (drwxr-xr-x root.root). I set the box for ftp, but (obviously) normal users can't write to that directory. I don't want to allow root ftp logins (I've also disabled root ssh logins, so scp doesn't work either), and I don't know how secure it is to change ownership of the html directory. Can someone float me a couple of hints on how to accomplish this? TIA, -- Tom

Hi Folks, as recommended I have only updated up2date , up2date-gnome.# All other packages deselected. Run uptodate - okay. But now I have no channels in up2date - I can't update my system. Hi, I got this in yum update process : /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.43939: line 12: restorecon: command not found error: %post(up2date-4.4.69-25.centos4.5.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 127 "restorecon" is from package "policycoreutils", this last one has never been installed on my system ... grep question

if I have a file that has more than these two entries bats@tt net-bats@tt and I do a "grep -v bats" (intention was to get everything except bats but net-bats was mistakenly grepped) How do I specify the beginning of the line and match after that so bats is caught not net-bats? Downloaded 290/290 and kernel panic, not syncing. Same old Linux. Fortunately, hadn't started updates, /home had been unmounted by some forward-looking individual and there was a sync;sync and blockdev -- flushbufs running every 15 seconds. =>:-o Pucker factor went from {O} to {o} to }{ the max! Anyway, a quick reboot, fsck, split the check-update into 2 arbitrary pieces and do it again. Part 2 is running as beads of sweat drip due to a recently arrived y \thunderstorm ... but I finished first, powered all down. Back up and everything is working. I like the new look. The flicker when scrolling the virtual desktop around *seems* reduced (I'm sure it'll leave when I activate DRI again, turned off by the stupid Xorg update). Anyway, congrats from this old workstation. Looks good.

disabling console blanking ?

Hi! Some of my centos's servers (poweredge 850/ centos 4.3) are crashing for any reason, and so i wanna get screen (kernel) output afterward. Problem is when the server is crashed and the screen blanked, a keypress doesn't do anything at all. Here it is what i've tried _from a ssh session_ : - setterm -blank 0 and many combinations. - "noacpi" boot option ... Any ideas ? Thanks ! -- Martin

problem with rebootning on recen centos kernels

hi friends, maybe you could help me with following problem: We have one SuperMicro dual xenon machine running Centos 4.3 ia32 version and we have problem with reboting this machine remotely (command reboot from ssh connection). After upgrade to kernel versions 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp and 2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp the machine hangs right after the: md: md0 switched to read-only mode. message and does not reboot. Other systems says at this moment something like "Rebooting ..." and do reboot. With kernel version 2.6.9-34.0.1.ELsmp and older everything is ok, so that there must be some change in 2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp and later. I have tried to boot with reboot=bios, reboot=force, reboot=triple, acpi=off - unfortunately with no success. Does anybody seen od solved this issue? Dan

Can ONLY log in as root-console perms problem

I did yum update the other day and it downloaded and installed a bunch of stuff, including a kernel. Didn't have time to reboot until today. today when I reboot, I get a message something like this during boot (from memory since it doesn't seem to be saved in dmesg anywhere): CRITICAL unknown class console at line 23 in /etc/security/console.perms and when the system finishes booting, only root can log in. X won't start, keeps erroring out because, well, I can't be sure. whenever I try to log in as myself it thinks for a few seconds then I get a blue screen saying there already seems to be a ":0" running, would I like to start ":1". If I say yes it tries to start another one and fails the same way. here's an excerpt from /etc/security/console: <mainboard>=/dev/apm_bios <pmu>=/dev/pmu <bluetooth>=/dev/rfcomm* <raw1394>=/dev/raw1394 # permission definitions <console> 0660 <floppy> 0660 root.floppy <===== line 23 <console> 0600 <sound> 0600 root <console> 0600 <cdrom> 0660 root.disk <console> 0600 <pilot> 0660 root.uucp <console> 0600 <jaz> 0660 root.disk I cannot log in on a text console either, only root can. I saw a series of messages from someone else saying he had to back out to the previous kernel, apparently because of a NVIDIA driver issue, so I tried that and it made no difference. He also suggested adding "pci=noacpi pci=biosirq" to the grub boot command, but the thing wouldn't even boot when I tried that. so, this must be some other problem. This is centos-4 32-bit xi6 on an Athlon XP 2600+, Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 motherboard that has been running either Tao or Centos for 2 1/2 years. Advice would be appreciated! Is there a method or way that will allow one to automagically mount samba shares requiring a password w/o using a plain text password? Even if I have to store the plaintext password in a file, is there at least a way to keep plain text passwords going over the network (IPSec perhaps)? === Al

centosplus kernel packages and compiler versions

I just installed the updated kernel packages for centos 4.4 from the centosplus repository. When I run vmware-config.pl to rebuild the vmware modules, it warns me that the kernel was compiled with gcc 3.4.6, whereas my compiler is gcc 3.4.5, and recommends that I not rebuild the modules unless I have exactly the same compiler version. I ignored this and built the modules anyway and they work fine, but why are the plus kernels not built with the stock centos4 compiler suite?

VSFTPD problem ?

I have 1 Centos server V4.x already running VSFTPD and when the user logs in they get chrooted to the home directory, I have installed the same config files to a second server (again Centos V4.x) and have setup the same user on the second server but the user does not get chrooted to the home directory but is placed in /var/ftp/pub and cannot upload file. The files I copied are:- /etc/vsftpd.user_list /etc/vsftpd /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf /etc/vsftpd.ftpusers /etc/vsftpd.chroot_list Any clues ? Thanks Denis

Which kernel package?

I am building a new system which will have a pair of dual-core Opterons and 16GB memory. Should I use kernel-smp or kernel-hugemem? I see that RH recommends the hugemem kernel if you have more than 16GB (and we may upgrade at some point, the MB supports 32GB). Any comments on this? The only difference that the descriptions show is the 4GB/4GB split with the hugemem kernel and I'm not quite clear on what that does. -- Bowie

I am wanting to pass arguments to lokkit to set up the iptables config file with an entry like this: ( i dont want to manually edit it - I want to do it automatically) iptables -A INPUT -p udp -m udp --dport 10000:20000 -j ACCEPT I have a small script file that has in it the ports I want enabled, like: ------------------- PORT_SSH="--port=22:tcp" PORT_HTTP="--port=http:tcp" /usr/sbin/lokkit -q --high --dhcp -t lo -t eth0 -t eth1 $PORT_SSH $PORT_HTTP ------------------- I want to add another line to enable ports 10000 - 20000. however the ":tdp" or ":udp" conflict with 10000:20000. I tried useing something like "10000,20000:udp" but did not work. THanks for any suggestions. Jerry

32bit versus 64bit memory usage?

I'm planning for new Centos 4 computers using the 64bit distribution and is wondering if there is a difference on how much RAM memory you should use on a 32bit versus 64bit operating system? Will processes such as for example KDE, Firefox use more memory on the 64bit architecture than on the 32bit and if so by how much as a rule of thumb? Kind regards, Christian

web based mail packages for CentOS

Hello Everyone, I was using OpenGroupware but just hosed my system. Since I'm starting from scratch I would like to know what everyone's using for web based mail. I currently implemented cyrus-imapd and postfix which I used before. I was going to give dovecot a try but it wouldn't start even though it was supposed to be easier. I would like to move my postfix to a chroot but have never done a chroot so I would appreciate any examples. Also how to get spamassassin working or any alternatives. 3.8 update/x86_64 kernel?

After updating a very old x86_64 3.x install to 3.8 it still has kernel-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL. Then if I repeat the yum update command, it offers to install kernel 2.4.21-47.EL.ia32e. Neither of these situations seems quite right. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com
