LVM repairing or back to regular ext3?

Can anyone point me in the right direction for correcting errors on an HD when using LVM? I've tried e2fsck and indicates bad block. I've tried with -b 8193, 16384, and 32768 and no good. I've found some info about reiserfsck on google, but this utility doesn't seem to be included in Centos4.3. I did find it on my old FC1 box. I am thinking now I really should have went with just regular 83 Linux ext3 partitions. Arrgghhh. And if I want to switch to 83 Linux instead of 8e LVM, whats the best way, or at least a feasible way? Thanks Guillermo. The thing is, I can send test emails outside my domain no problem. I can't send emails to my internal smtp server from any CentOS system on my internal network. I discovered that I didn't have an MX record in tinydns for my internal network, so I added that. After testing, no changes - any email that's destined to any address to my domain bounces with the error message listed below. I'm not a sendmail person, would rather do without it, but I don't think I can simply remove it from CentOS. I could install postfix, or qmail and see how that works, but it's serious overkill for sending simple emails internally... Had hopes ssmtp would work, but that doesn't either. Works on Gentoo systems, just not CentOS. A hair puller that's for sure, but I'll keep banging on it until it works. Thanks for all the ideas, if anyone can think of anything else, I'll try it! Dumb question about a Xeon Procesor

Sorry to ask here but never used a Xeon before. Tomorrow i need to install Centos 4.3 on a Quad Xeon (not dual core). Xeon is a 32 bit or 64 bit system? I already have centos 4.3 x86_64 on a Dvd and im not sure if i need to download another ISO or can I use the one i have? Problems with installation

Hi all, I try to install CentOS 4.3 for X64_64 on a new Dell PowerEdge 2950. I have two problems: 1. After booting from CD I pressed 'return' to start installation (BIOS-support for USB-keyboard works). After probing the hardware my USB-Keyboard is not working anymore. Dell removed ALL PS/2-Interfaces so I have to use USB. When I start installation with 'linux noprobe' the keyboard still is working and the installation starts. 2. After the installation starts it tries to load the storage drivers. In the case for this hardware it tries to load megaraid_sas. But it can't load the driver without an error. The installer just says:"loading megaraid_sas" for hours and hours (the complete last night). When I start with 'linux noprobe' I'm able to look at another console (alt+F2) and can try 'lsmod'. The output for megaraid_sas is 'loading' and not 'live' (again: for hours). Does anyone knows how I can solve these problems? Is kudzu not working correct for the first one? Thanx Jörg

Same thing. Install the new versions: yum update clamav clamav-devel Use perl -MCPAN to install the newest clamav perl module (if needed). Thanks for reading, I need certain shell scripts to email me after they are done running. I've installed ssmtp to forward to my internal SMTP server. I have a working ssmtp config on a Gentoo system that works just fine, but on CentOS it's not working. Minimum steps needed to get horde working with a single pop3 server?

I installed horde/Imp via yum and I am having difficulty getting it to function with my single POP3 server. I defined my external POP3 server in imp/config/servers.php, but every time I type in a POP3 username and password into the login screen it takes me to a blank redirect.php. Anyone have any idea whats going on? Note, all I did to setup apache was change the document root from /var/www/html to /usr/share/horde Thanks, Andrew

Suspend and/or Hibernate

I asked about ACPI several weeks ago but received no responses. Are suspend and hibernate features not supported in CentOS yet? I noticed there is a daemon for acpi: [scarolan@kalki ~]$ chkconfig --list | grep acpi acpid 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off But how do I use this feature? Normally I'm accustomed to this being a menu option when I log out (eg, on recent versions of Fedora or Ubuntu). I noticed in /etc/acpi/events/ there is a file called sample.conf which configures the power button to attempt a graceful shutdown. How can I add a 'suspend' or 'hibernate' feature and bind it to a keyboard combination? thanks Sean

Web page development, NVU: anybody with experience?

Hi folks, I think this *might* be a product that the CentOS-affiliated community might like to include? I decide to buy a new truck because I don't drive my 'Vette enough to justify it and I can really use a P/U. Thought I would take advantage of RoadRunner's free home page (<= 5MB) to post pics, etc. to sell it. XML, HTML, SGML, DocBook... what's a n00b to do? Still working on getting my LVM fully config'd so I can test testdisk and I find I want to do this first (could almost pay for the trk). Found nvu 1.0 here http://www.nvu.com/download.php and downloaded this http://www.nvu.com/download/linux/1.0/nvu-1.0- RedHat_and_Fedora/nvu-1.0-1.rhel4.fs.i386.rpm (kde version, non-kde also available) which is supposed to be compatible with CentOS AFAICT. It installs and starts up OK on my fully updated 4.3 (including this A.M.s mutt and php updates). Well, *that's* enough by itself to ask one of the great CentOS associated repo folks to make it available for all of us. It's intended for "casual users" I guess and if no one has anything bad to say about it, other than it's for insophisticates like myself, I'd like to see it in the CentOS community and available. Any comments? It's open, free, has some financial support from this product http://www.linspire.com/lindows_sales_intro.php. Only neg I see at the outset is that it's been a little dormant. As I use it, I'll post thoughts if anybody requests such. -- Bill

Yes, I did try to boot off a 4.5TB device. Now, the individual partitions are: / 1GB /dev/sda2 ext3 /boot 250MB /dev/sda1 ext2 (Marked as primary partition.) swap 1024 /dev/sda3 ext3 /data 4.449TB /dev/sda4 ext3 All 9 drives are RAID5 together via the 3Ware card. Tomorrow, I'll don my earplugs and create a small 1TB RAID device to install CentOS, then RAID5 the remaining 7 drives for all the data. I'l recreate the partitions above in the 1TB array, then use LVM to add the remaining 3.5TB into the LVs I need. I could also read up on array carving, that's new to me. Thanks for all the help on this, I really thought I was doing something silly with the BIOS or some other setting. Didn't realize I would be running into limits of the OS. Now, if anyone knows how to tune this thing for best write performance, that would be really cool. This server is part of a tapeless backup system using rsync. There's a good howto in the Linux Hacks book. We started from that, and it's just grown into a fully automated system that does hourly, daily and weekly backups. Plus, it sends it offsite to a colo location.... In case people were wondering why so much disk space... Mark

RPM: any better way to reinstall only certain files?

My former primary boot disk had some bad spots appear awhile back. Damage, per rpm --verify, seems to be predominately in loss of reference files in /usr/share/doc and such as that. Being the type that wastes my own time before wasting that of others, I did a semi-careful perusal of the rpm man pages. Thought the --files or some such might offer a way ought. IIUC, nope! Seems that I can't select specific files. It looks like I could do a new install in a new root (chrooted) and then copy the files out, but I was already aware of an apparently easier way I had used years ago, rpm2cpio (easier because I can use the verify output list, slightly edited and reduced, to select the desired files. Thought "Well, it probably can do what I want, I just missed it. Maybe tutorials, HOWTOs, etc. will give the answer". It's just one large single RAID5, so it's slightly less than 4.5TB. So, what you're saying then is to either put a small single HD to install CentOS, or make the array smaller than 4.5TB. I could easily make something much smaller, say ~1TB, install CentOS on that. Once that's finished, create the rest of the array as another array at the size that I need. Could use LVM to stitch it all together... I'll give this a try, thanks for the help. Mark

I'm trying to install either 32-bit or 64 bit centos 4.3 and I keep getting an error: "No valid devices were found on which to install filesystems". In checking BIOS and RAID, everything seems fine, but I just found some research about I20. An alternative would be the i2o_blocks module. How can I install CentOS 4.3 x86_64 using i2o_blocks? How do I instruct the boot prompt to find this driver and get me past the above error? Even in 32-bit I still get this error as well. -karl

tftp question

I have tftp running on a computer. done with yum install tftp and yum install tftp-server. The computer has 2 network cards in it. Everything else on this computer is working fine. My tftp config is : # description: The tftp server serves files using the trivial file transfer \ # protocol. Problem with CentOS 4.3 and ldap

I currently have a server with centos 4.3 setup to do email. I use sendmail as the receiving agent and Dovecot as the pop/imap server. Users authenticate off of a openldap server. Under a light load things appear to work fine. However under a moderately heavy load connections are left open in a waiting state. This causes some email to bounce with user unknown, users authentications fails with bad username/password all with valid accounts. I am trying to figure out what the cause is to fix it but with out success. By restarting ldap and the ldap server I can minimize the problem because the connections get reset. I find nothing when I google on the subject. I don't believe this is a problem with the ldap server because I have a Fedora core machine using it without problems. Any help or ideas on how to track down the problem would be appreciated. Myron Williams

Hardware Raid cards RAID 0 / 1

Last week we tried to install Centos on a brand new HP ML150 G2 with AIC-8130/ Marvell SATA Raid card and it was a no go. We tried a few other flavors of Linux as a test and all had trouble as well. Unfortunately time didn't permit so we opted for a Windows solution to get the box into production. We have never had a problem with IDE and Embedded SATA (Non Raid) Next time we want to research the SATA compatibility a head of time. Any suggestions? What cards have worked for you? Thanks.

Freenx full screen mode problem fixed in 0.5.x?

In early June, there was an update from freenx 0.4.x to 0.5.x in centosplus. It broke full screen mode for Linux clients. I am aware of the ctrl-alt-f workaround. But I have quite a few users at branch offices who depend on NX and with employee turnover and all, it has been a source of confusion for us. Has anyone come up with a fix so that fullscreen works without crtl-alt-f? I've searched the freenx/knx list and have found no mention of anyone there having problems. Just the centosplus version. I prefer to continue using the CentOS-provided package, though. Thanks for any assistance. -Steve

I downloaded the latest (9.3.0.4) driver from 3Ware, and after a couple of botched attempts, I got CentOS installed. In my two botched attempts, the problem was X hanging during the formatting of the drives, so I switched to another virtual screen while formatting took place, and the system didn't freeze. My problem now is the system won't boot. I know this is not exactly a CentOS problem, I'm just hoping some kind sole would help me outta this overworked fog I'm in. When the system tries to boot, the cursor just sits there in the left corner of the screen flashing. Nothing happens. I am probably missing something very simple, that will cause me great public embarrassment, but I really don't care right now. Yes, I set the bios to boot from the 3Ware card, and CentOS install did show grub stage(1) and stage(2) getting installed. After that, I'm not exactly sure where to look. Kernel-utils stupidities (readahead and cpuspeed)

Hi all, I think I've spotted a few stupidities (bugs) in the current version of kernel-utils (kernel-utils-2.4-13.1.80). I'm sure these are all propagated from upstream, but I hope someone could have a quick look to verify this and see if we either can push complaints upwards, or provide local fixes. The kernel-utils package provides several 'kernel-type' functions - readahead and readahead_early and also the cpuspeed have a few problems; readahead 'reads ahead' (stats to copy to cache for speedy access?) the files found in /etc/readahead.files. While most of these files are various images and common binaries, some are libraries which have been replaced by newer versions, thereby reducing the usefulness of readahead. Readahead.early uses a different file (/etc/readahead.early.files) to cache useful system libraries, including a few kernel modules - for the 2.6.3-2.1.238.2 kernel. Both readahead and readahead.early are installed as disabled. chkconfig lists them as 'off' in all runlevels. Worse, cpuspeed. This is from an Athlon64 system, so it is possible that this behavior is different on non powernow-k8 systems. On the CentOS4-x86_64 kernels, the cpuspeed-drivers are built into the kernel. Here, cpu speed-management works, as the /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_driver -file exists (tested for in /etc/init.d/cpuspeed). On CentOS4-i386, the powernow-k8-module is not built into the kernel, so the above test fails, and the cpuspeed startscript exits. There seems to be a plan for this. The /etc/cpuspeed.conf file can specify a DRIVER variable, but no attempt is made to insmod this, so even if this is set, cpuspeed still fails. A simple fix is to check for the presence of the above /sys entry, and if that is missing, modprobe $DRIVER. Without this, cpuspeed will never work on my systems. Does it work elsewhere? I've a 3ware Escalade 8006-2 and run Centos 4.2 using the latest kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp. I see that the card comes with some disk management tools called 3DM2 Management Utility. Notebook suspend instructions -- Gentoo to Centos

At: http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/05/24/1716222 are instructions for implementing suspend mode on a Linux notebook, but the script is for Gentoo and it seems like Centos needs something else. As this puts my system REALLY fast into Suspend, but it never comes back out. Further the temp file: var/tmp/video_state.XXXXXX is empty, so something is not right. Now for my system, HP NC4010, cat /sys/power/state results in: standby mem disk (I think that is the list, definitely 3 items with the 2nd being mem). I ASSuME that this meets what the instructions tell you need to see if your notebook supports acpi suspend. But grep ACPI_SLEEP KERNEL_CONFIG does not seem to have a SLEEP line. Well maybe I was not looking in the right place for the kernel_config. I was looking in /usr/src/ But echo -n mem > /sys/power/state really puts my system into a suspend mode fast. Perhaps part of the problem is with cat /proc/bus/pci/$ID > $TMP_FILE as there are a couple of directories in this directory. It is rather hard to supply more detailed information, as I have to keep rebooting between XP and Linux until I get Thunderbird migrated...

Hi I am using Centos 4.3 to host various web sites that I maintain. I am finding that I am getting more and more, and I have thought of setting up a hosting server to make things quicker for my self. I have setup webmin with virtualmin and it seems to work fine so far. What is everyone else using. I don't want to invest alot of money, but would like some thing that is quick and easy to setup a domain and mysql database, ftp etc. Right now I have to edit httpd, etc etc. Thanks Mace

If you use the Bastille Scripts or the iptables to help secure access to webmin, you can defeat some of the exploits. Apache Security

Hello, I have a server running CentOS 4.3 with all the latest updates. The server in question has been hacked by spammers a few times. The details of the hack have been basically the same every time. I find some directory created by the apache user account in /tmp. The new directory contains an html file, and a list of email addresses to spam and a perl script that spams all those email addresses with the html file. My question is why is this happening? Obviously it's some apache exploit. I have removed mod_perl, that didn't help. I have now changed the permissions on the perl executable, that might help we will see, but that doesn't address the core problem. How is it that someone can upload arbitrary files to my server and then execute an arbitrary command via apache. Is this a know problem? Have others seen it? What can I do to help prevent this? hey friends, I am using vsftpd version 2.0.1 on Centos4.0. I am trying to create some virtual users who can upload,download and delete the files in their particular directories. Upgrade 3.4 --> 3.7 went awry: rpmdb hosed

I installed CentOS 3.4 from a CD image I'd burned a while ago, and then attempted to update with yum to 3.7. All the packages installed OK, but at the very end of final cleanup I got an error message from db4 saying to "RUN RECOVERY". I did "rpm --rebuilddb" which may have been the wrong thing -- it issued an error about "pages missing". I then ran it again, and it came back with no errors, but after rebooting (for the kernel update) "rpm -qa" lists only a dozen packages or so, of which "rpm" is not one, and "yum check-update" chokes, showing Null for $releasever and the empty string for $basearch. This was a brand-new system, so I'm thinking I'll just download the 3.7 ISOs and re-install, but on the off chance there's some other way to recover from this I thought I'd ask. There doesn't seem to be anything missing other than a large chunk of the RPM database itself.

Clamav and Postfix

Hello all, I am trying to replace a RH 7.1 (ouch!) box that has been running postfix 1.x/clamav/SA/amavisd-new on which the amavis/PF/SA packages have not been updated because of the way they were built/configured. I would like to use CentOS to do this. Having followed the thread regarding perl versioning issues with the latest version of amavisd-new and CentOS Base I am thinking I should pursue another path. I would like to have a solution that follows the distro path as closely as possible (using code supplied by the distro if possible or at least something I can install from a reputable yum repo) and this perhaps comes before using the latest version of amavisd-new. That being said, I'd like to ask if there are others out there on the list using clamav and Postfix together on CentOS and if so, how are you doing it and what did you have to do in order to get it working? Hi, I'm just curious about setting up a new VPN here in the office part of our enterprise, as well as a second in our 75+ node data center co-location facility. Needing to stomp out the ****dows L2TP node here, just too many side-issues with config. I'd like it to run the same OS as all of our servers, e.g. Centos 4.3. Any recommedations on which software/server/client rpm's/targ.gz's to run? Any pointers at existing of wiki-able HOWTO's under Centos I can check out? As usual, if it's not been documented yet, i'd sincerely contribute what I can to the process of rendering a complete document for the future use of the community. -karlski

Yum Update

Why is it when i do a "yum list all kernel*" I only get 4 packages returned from the centosplus repo when in fact there are many many more if I go look in the RPMS folder where it's pulling the packages from? I'm trying to install the basic unsupported kernel (smp) to get XFS support but it doesn't appear when i do a yum list nor can i seem to get it to install when i specify the rpm name itself. As if it isn't there when clearly it is..

cacti on centos

Hi all, I'm trying to get Cacti installed on my CentOS 4.3 x86_64 box. I've got all of required packages installed, and created database file, and followed all the instructions in install manual. However, when I get login screen and use admin for username/password, it simply redirects me straight back to login screen. Looking at user_log table, the authentication was successfull (and since it was updated, I know database stuff works OK). If I type username or password wrong, I get messages saying so. If I just use admin as username/password, I get normal login screen with no "wrong password" message. I'm kind of stuck. Googling around hasn't helped much either. Anybody else had same problem? Searching the list archive, I can see there are many folks outthere running Cacti on CentOS, so hopefully somebody could help me out. Some additional notes: One thing I had to do was to hardcode paths in include/config.php for $config["base_path"] and $config["library_path"]. The ereg_replace stuff was throwing "premature end of regular expression" errors. Could be related to the problem I have. I got same thing with Karan's and cacti.org SRPM files (0.8.6d and 0.8.6h, respectively). SELinux is in permissive mode on the box. Could not get shadow information for NOUSER

Hello all, I have a CentOS 4.2 server that gives me these error messages in my /var/log/secure file, I realise that these are SSH attacks, but where does the extra line "Could not get shadow information for NOUSER" come from? This doesn't make any sense. I have many servers running CentOS 4.2, but don't get this error message on any others. I hate junk in my logs. Is there any way to get rid of it? I need to enable pg support on one of my CentOS servers. I know nothing about PHP but DRUPAL requires a DB backend and we have standardized on pg rather than mysql. The PHP.net page devoted to the subject of pg says that to enable pg support PHP must be built with the flag "--with-pgsql[=DIR]" and that the required support extension must be loaded via the /etc/php.ini file with the statement "extension=pgsql.so". However, I have tried to find this file "pgsql.so" on the CentOS server before proceeding blindly and have come up empty. Can somebody here give me some detailed help on getting DRUPAL running with PsotgreSQL under CentOS; or at least point me to a site where I can find out how to obtatin the necessary and appropriate pgsql.so file? Using Centos on both server and client systems a private network

I'm looking for how-tos/hints to make the following possible: I downloaded all four centos 4.3 iso to a ext3 partition on my hd, burned the first disk only, and the a hd based install. Problem: Centos didnt seem to take into account that I was doing a HD based install and and ask me if I wanted to use the hd images as a source for additional appliction installs later. Now it asks me for the cds and I dont want that. I want it to look at the hd for the additional rpms. Question: How can I make this happen? Catch: The catch is that this "server" will eventually be setup to "feed" the cds out to clients when they install and when they "add apps later". So I'd like to use an implementation method that lends itself to both applications. I'm open to nfs, ftp, or http content delivery to clients in case one or the other makes a difference.

could someone please point me in the right direction for creating a local repository for centos updates. Scenario: I have one centos server connected to the internet, it provides ntpd, httpd, and other services to both internal and external clients (only httpd is serving external clients). the clients are connected to the first centos server and it functions as a NAT router for internet sharing purposes. I'd like to create a local updates repository so that clients only need to check MY update server instead of the public ones. I'd like the option of just being a repository of the "update list" (the list of packages that are updated), and being a repository of the .rpm files themselves.

File & Print Server Connection

I have installed CentOS 4.3 final and have configured it for file and print server. File server appears to function correctly in the windows environment but the print server mode is not functioning properly. The printer is an HP laserjet 4P and is stalled and functioning for print services from the CENT Platform. Although it is set for sharing and while its icon is shown in the windows environment the call up requires the driver dialog to appear and selection of the driver and its installation goes fine, However, while the drivers are installed and the HP is shown on the Cent platform thedisplay says, "hp on Global-50 Access denied, unable to connect". I have no idea where to go to make this connection. Please advise any one. Thanks Casey admin1

I have spent the last 4-5 hours scrounging google articles on this and have found 2 solutions. The problem is one of them is something that we will not do (as MS will not support extending AD with Services For Unix(SFU)). The other is simply configuring kerberos and pam on the linux system. No problem there from what I can tell. Ticket cache: FILE:/tmp/krb5cc_0 Default principal: userid(a)dom.ain Valid starting Expires Service principal 07/05/06 07:23:03 07/05/06 17:23:47 krbtgt/DOM.AIN(a)DOM.AIN renew until 07/06/06 07:23:03 Kerberos 4 ticket cache: /tmp/tkt0 klist: You have no tickets cached The problem though is configuring winbind from the console (all of the linux systems are nothing more than the kernel, ssh and the few apps necessary for the system to do it's job). All the online examples I have been able to find use the linux GUI. Does anyone know of a document (or mind sharing) how they installed and configured the samba 3 winbind daemon to map SID's to unix uid's/gid's? Hi folks, Just updating clamav 'bundle' from old 'clamav-server' (i think the just previous) and i noticed that the 'clamav' user/group for this pkg is not created by default by the rpm pkg. I'm also a fan of CentOS, but take a look at M0n0wall @ http://m0n0.ch . That's what I use for my VPN. At HQ, I use M0n0 on a CF card, with a decent Monarch 1U system, no hard drives. For the remote offices, I use Soekris NET4801 boxes. All embedded, no moving parts, very sweet to use. hth Mark

In regards to recent upgrade in www.clamav.net to 0.88.3 and... ...as an example I've used this page to create a process where I can create my own clamav programs/stuff/etc... http://qmail.jms1.net/clamav-upgrade.shtml and so I would go to http://crash.fce.vutbr.cz/crash-hat/4/clamav/ and snag the source rpm that Petr made for Fedora 4. He hasn't updated yet (pretty sure he will soon) as an alternative... how would I do what Petr does and create my own clamav source rpm... I downloaded the kernel from kernel.org. I did the following: cd /usr/src tar -jxf /tmp/linux-2.6.17.3.tar.bz2 cd linux-2.6.17.3 make menuconfig selected what I needed, saved the new config make bzImage make modules At this point nothing is compiled. All I get is: CHK include/linux/version.h Building modules, stage 2. MODPOST and a command prompt. I did make menuconfig again and it has an [*] next to the kernel modules. Why are modules not compiling? THanks, Jerry

[CentOS] Mysql login-problem after recent 4.1.20 upgrade (CentOS4.3, x86_64)

Hi all, I've upgraded my mysql-installation from the previous 4.1.12 version to the new 4.1.20 version, and I've found that a daemon I'm using suddenly can't log into the database anymore. I've verified the problem with the mysql command; [root@sciream ~]# mysql -upostfix -p mysql Enter password: ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'postfix'@'localhost' (using password: YES) [root@sciream ~]# I've changed the users password in the mysql database to make sure the encrypted version is compatible with the current server, but to no avail Rolling back to the 4.1.12 version fixed it for me (if not, I'd still be sweating about this ;-), but I hope this mail comes in time to assist others. # rpm -Uvh --oldpackage mysql-4.1.12-3.RHEL4.1.* \ mysql-server-4.1.12-3.RHEL4.1.x86_64.rpm \ mysql-devel-4.1.12-3.RHEL4.1.x86_64.rpm fixed it again. I have installed two CentOS 4.3 boxes with LVS (from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/csgfs/ ) but all boxes died withe this error frequently: kernel panic - not syncing: fs/block_dev.c:396: spin_lock (fs/block_dev.c:c0361c0) already locked by fs/block_dev.c/287. I have read from this thread http://threebit.net/mail-archive/centos/msg00243.html that this is an unsolved problem. running the kernel go to panic. Latest x86_64 != latest i386 packages?

I have CentOS 4.3 on two machines, one i386 (3.0GHz P4) and one x86_64 (2.6GHz Opteron). Both have centos-release-4-3.2 autoconf-2.59-5 However, on the i386: perl-5.8.5-34.RHEL4 Whereas on the x86_64: perl-5.8.5-24.RHEL4 Is this really correct? I ask because when I attempt to recompile zsh on the x86_64 box, I unaccountably get this error: Can't locate object method "path" via package "Request" at /usr/share/autoconf/Autom4te/C4che.pm line 69, <GEN1> line 111. I'm trying to recompile zsh in the first place because the "limit" command doesn't work on the x86_64 system, so the SRPM build appears to have incorrectly preprocessed sys/resource.h and I wanted to track down the details before filing a bug report.

Installing TOO USB Drive

Greetings CentOS Fans. I'm working on an Inspiron 9400 Laptop. It supports booting from USB devices, so I'd like to install CentOS on a USB hard drive as an alternative to XP. I tried booting to the 4.3 (disk 1) CD, but it doesn't see the USB Drive when it gets to the stage of partitioning... any idea what's involved in getting the USB drive recognized so I can install CentOS onto it? The following is a paste out of my firewall document that I wrote that has been tested and works: 6.15 Configuring Headless Operation By configuring headless operating we will be able to manage the firewall via a cable plugged into the serial port of the firewall. This obviates the need to plug a keyboard and monitor into it to perform changes. Thus the term headless. 6.15.1 Changes to /etc/inittab The /etc/inittab file contains settings that get applied to the Operating Systems at boot time. There are some changes that need to be made to these settings. In order to edit the /etc/inittab file type: vi /etc/inittab Typing this command will open the /etc/inittab file for editing. As stated earlier the 18th line down is the run level line. Add the following line to the file: S0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty ttyS0 9600 linux This line sets the Operating System to be able to send boot time information to the serial port in addition to the console. After you have made these changes to the /etc/inittab file press the colon (: ) key and then type wq to quit vi and save the changes. 6.15.2 Changes to /etc/securetty The /etc/securetty sets the controls for which TTY devices that the root account can log on via. In order for us to be able to log onto the serial console as root or to be able to su to root we must add a line to the file. In order to edit the /etc/secuertty file type: vi /etc/securetty Typing this command will open the /etc/secuertty file for editing. Add the following line to the end of the file: ttyS0 This line sets the Operating System to allow root to log on to the serial port in addition to the console. After you have made these changes to the /etc/securetty file press the colon (: ) key and then type wq to quit vi and save the changes. 6.15.3 Changes to the Boot Loader In order for boot-time messages to be sent to the console, including the boot loader information some changes must be made to the configuration file for it. The boot loader that CentOS uses is GRUB. As such, the configuration file is /etc/grub.conf. The first change that we must make is to add some lines after the timeout line in the GRUB configuration file. In order to edit the /etc/grub.conf file type: vi /etc/grub.conf Typing this command will open the /etc/grub.conf file for editing. Add the following two lines after the timeout line in the configuration file: serial --unit=0 --speed=9600 terminal --timeout=2 serial console Another change that we must make in the GRUB configuration file is to tell the kernel to send out all kernel-level messages to the serial port in addition to the console. That is done by adding the following line to the end of the kernel line: console=tty1 console=ttyS0,9600 After you have made these changes to the /etc/grub.conf file press the colon (: ) key and then type wq to quit vi and save the changes. DNS Server

Hello, I have recently switched from having a dynamic IP address and using a DNS service like zoneedit and dyndns to having a static IP address. How do I stop having to use these DNS services and use my own? I tried changing the DNS servers at my registrar but it won't accept my server. TIA
