Hello All Currently on a CentOS 4.3 system with the 2.6.14.3 kernel. Is there a recommend way to properly recompile the kernel? I was thinking of dling the source from kernel.org, but I was told that using SRPMs would be better? Any suggestions ? Thank You

Possible to change mouse sensitivity?

Ever since I replaced the mouse that came with one of my computers with a Logitech MX1000, I have noticed that I have difficulty with accurately making small movements with the pointer in X because it moves so fast. I have played around with the mouse preferences, and using 'xset m', but neither one gives me what I want. When I do 'xset m 1/4 1' I get about what I consider to be a normal/usable speed for the mouse when I need to do precise pointing. Of course, that setting eliminates the possibility of getting the pointer across the screen with a flick of the wrist. Most of the articles I have found related to this problem have been about having entries in the XFree86 or xorg config file for two different mouse device names that are actually the same device, and I don't. I have also seen references to psmouse_resolution and psmouse_rate but when I give either of these as a parameter to the kernel, it says they are obsolete and ignores them. My understanding is this mouse is not well supported in xorg until 6.8.3, but I'm still wondering if there is some way to get the kernel to slow it down. Does anybody know of a way to do that, so I can get back the mouse acceleration on fast movements? Oh, by the way, I should probably mention this mouse is on a KVM. I don't know if that could be interfering with the detection algorithm. Thanks for your help. Linus

Help with some screen command

Hi, I want to connect to my server, run screen as root and then let another person log in a root also and let him run screen and attach to mine so he can "see" what im doing on the server. I haven't played with screen a lot but it seems a nice feature to teach him how to configure certain things. Mainpine OCTO+ and CentOS v4

I've been having a problem with getting a Mainpine OCTO+ working on CentOS Version 4. I know at some point I'll have to recompile the kernel in order to access all 8 ports but something is still not right. Wvdialconf almost every will id all of the ports. All too often it can fine the modem on at least half the ports on the board. I'm starting to hear that something is not right on V4 when using the mainpine. System config: Dell 2650 dual Xeon with 2GB ram. Has anyone setup a OCTO+ on V4 yet? providing drivers at boot time for SATA

I just got a motherboard with the nforce4 chipset. Apparantly the PCI'ids changed for the SATA and the drivers are not loaded or found at install time. What can I do to provide them? I am using CentOS 4.3. Will those new changes to 4.4 handle this? Thanks Jerry

Problems with installing perl-Gtk2 from kbsingh repros

I need perl-Gtk2 for TinyCA2. I find it on centos.karan.org After many misteps, I add bout kbsingh-Centos-Extras.repro and kbsingh-Centos-Misc.repro to /etc/yum.repro.d I do a yum install perl-Glib and it finally goes, adding perl-ExtUtils and warning me about user mockbuild does not exist. Then I try install perl-Gtk2 and it fails: yum install perl-Gtk2 Setting up Install Process Setting up repositories Reading repository metadata in from local files Parsing package install arguments Resolving Dependencies --> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Kernel build on i386 and nohighmem forbidden?

I looked in the release notes, but maybe I missed it. Is it not possible to build a kernel from CentOS 4.3 (using 2.6.9-34.0.1) with HIGHMEM support turned off? This is for a machine with 512mb. When I try to build the kernel, I get _etext undefined symbol on line 100 of pageattr.c in arch/i386/mm. Linus

Hi, I just installed CentOS 4.3 on a PATA drive and later installed 2 SATA2 (300mbit/s) disk drives. The patched sata_via driver detect the drives and I can use them, but only if I manually create the /dev/sda and /dev/sdb files using mknod. installing wireless card

hello, i am trying to install my wireless card ipw3945 (intel pro wireless abg). i have found the three files ipw3945d, ipw3945-firmware and the ipw3945-kmod from Dags site, but when i tried to install the ipw3945-kmod it says it needs kmod-ipw3945 0.0.73. where can i find it? will this work for my wireless card. i am running Centos 4.3 on a hp dv8000t and this is something i would like to see if it will work. Installer ISO with testing kernel?

We're trying to install CentOS 4 on an ASUS P5RD1-VM motherboard, which has the ULI M1573 chipset. This means we need the sata_uli driver, which will be in RHEL4u4 and thus is (I think) in the testing kernel currently available from CentOS. However, that doesn't get us past the fact that the installer doesn't recognize the drives. Does anyone have a recommendation for how we can get this install to work? Can we somehow build an ISO containing the testing kernels? Any other suggestions for how we might get CentOS up and running on this machine before the release of 4.4?

Vnc Problems

Hi I have a Centos server running and have been vncing into it for a couple of months. A while back I was admining another server thru it using firefox. The browser crashed and several services crashed in Centos as well. Ever since then I get the bottom menu in Gnome but none of the open programs show up in it. So If I minimize a program it is gone, and I can't open it again from the desktop. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this. Thanks Mace

unable to write files bigger than 4GB over NFS

This may not be a CentOS problem, because I'm in a mixed environment. But I put it out in case anybody has any thoughts. I recently replaced a file server, which was on a Pentium III based system running 32-bit CentOS 4.3, with an Opteron based system running Fedora 4. The NFS clients are all CentOS 4.3, some are 32 bit and some are 64 bit. Since the replacement, when I try to write a big file from the 32bit CentOS boxes over NFS to the server, I get "filesize exceed messages" at 2GB. However this used to work with the old server. And I can write big files if I'm logged on to the server. One more oddity, the shared file system on the server is xfs formatted; if I instead mount a reiserfs file system I can successfully write. This part does not make sense to me. And one more, I can write large files from a 32-bit Fedora 4 system to the server over NFS, just not from 32-bit CentOS. I'm exporting with (rw,async) and mounting with (bg,rsize=8192,wsize=8192) Is there some interaction between nfs and xfs that I need to know about? Thanks, Tony Schreiner Boston College

If Trying to Recover a Damaged Partition: kbs-CentOS-Extras Has a Tool

Recently (and for ages, I'm sure) folks have suffered partition destruction and had to try and recover. In the recent thread, the victim eventually had to resort to Google and fond some package that I can not remember now. Well, I was perusing my YumInfo.lst.05, for general info, and I discovered this (potential) little gem. Thought I would pass it on and make it "more googleable" by adding a few keywords at the end of this. Here's the info summary. Name : testdisk Arch : i386 Version: 6.3 Release: 1.el4.kb Size : 480 k Repo : kbs-CentOS-Extras Summary: Tool to check and undelete partition Description: Tool to check and undelete partition. Works with FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, BeFS, CramFS, HFS, JFS, Linux Raid, Linux Swap, LVM, LVM2, NSS, ReiserFS, UFS, XFS I hope it actually "looks for file-system key stuff" instead of just examining the damaged blocks (often just missing the 0x05 (?) valid flag). If so, it looks "Mahvelous Dahling!" to me. We just need to get some time to exercise this, create some test cases and find out how really good it is. As time permits, I'll do some of that, as I'm reconfig bunch of stuff all the time and have some old small disks (and systems to match that I can resurrect... Windows95 from Genuine floppies anybody?) and the interest. I'll add to this thread as things are discovered. Anyone who has done this already, or has firsthand experience, can allow me to continue my on-going learning of new stuff by reporting on this package so I don't invest the time to evaluate this properly. ssh session output stalls

Hello, Is anyone else having problems with the ssh session output stalling when ssh'd to another system and the command is running via sudo and a pager is being used (e.g., more)? Too highly reproducible :( to date, all known occurrences have involved Centos 4.3 servers; makes no difference whether client is RHEL WS 4.3, Centos 4.3 or FC 5 or WinDoze. Makes no difference if terminal emulator is Gnome's stock issue or Konsole or Putty. Not sure about SecureCRT. Sometimes one can break loose the logjam; if so: . terminal prompts are stacked left to right vs. vertically . keyboard input is not echo'd . in this event, terminal clear/reset doesn't end if so. How do you set the refresh frequency for the X server?

During the kickstart installation of the CentOS 4.3 systems I recently built, anaconda probed for the video card (Intel 945) and monitor (NEC MultiSync 2070NX). The optimal setting for this monitor is 1600x1200 @ 60Hz. The X server is configured to use 1600x1200, but it is using a higher refresh rate, which causes the monitor to display an error message, and it also locks you out of the on-screen- menu. How do you translate a 60Hz refresh frequency into the appropriate horizontal sync and vertical refresh frequencies in the xorg.conf file? I can't find anything to change in system-config- display. I am thinking in make a translation (to Spanish) of some of the topics on the CentOS official web site (like About, Purpose, ...), some of the wiki (for the history), the Johnny's article on the linux-magazine's issue#65, and the statistics posted by Johnny some time ago. References will be included too. Now get 2 questions for you guys: 1. Would I use the CentOS logo for this, just to put it on the very top of the document?. This document will be totally free and will be archived in the LUG classroom for other peoples and students to read it and for freely distribution of it too, after the presentation. Just a little of promotion to the very great job. 2. If so, where would I download an appropriate one? I've read the "Are there any requirements on the use of CentOS Logos and artwork?" post in the web site faq section and want to be sure that what I'm doing goes in the right way. clock goes MUCH faster than normal on dual-core (solution)

Just in case anyone else gets bitten, I noticed that a bunch of my dual core opteron machines were losing time sync pretty fast (gaining a few days every few days...heh). I searched back on the list and found some messages about passing a clock parameter in grub.conf. The following worked for me: clock=pmtmr These are systems using the Supermicro H8SLL-i boards and Opteron 175-185 cpus and running CentOS 4.3. Cheers,

CentOS-4.4 - Some major changes on the way

I would like to take the time to inform people that CentOS-4.4 will contain some major changes. The changes are significant enough that I would like to spell out some of them now, probably at least a month before the release of the upstream "EL4 update 4" is released. The Mozilla Suite (Browser, Mail, Chat clients) will be replaced by SeaMonkey. This is due to Mozilla's change in policy and support for older versions. The Firefox 1.0.x (currently 1.0.8) web browser will be replaced by Firefox 1.5.x (currently 1.5.0.3). We currently have a version of Firefox 1.5.x in the CentOSPlus repo. This allows better sharing of files between OpenOffice.org 2.0 and CentOS clients. ------------------------------- All these changes will be implemented upstream and rolled out in the released source code, so they will be incorporated into CentOS as well. We will fully test these packages prior to release of the CentOS-4.4 ISOs, however these changes are fairly substantial. I would also like to remind people who are more cautious that CentOS has a vault that will contain CentOS-4.3 after we shift the main mirrors to CentOS-4.4. The vault is available at: http://vault.centos.org/ I am not suggesting that people don't upgrade (as security updates would require one to maintain the current version), but I am just providing information so that if the updates break something, you can easily get back to a known previous version. We have not had any problems so far with the new packages in our testing, and they will be deemed STABLE by upstream when they are released, however these changes are by far the most significant since the release of CentOS-4 and I think they deserve some special attention. DRBD Problem

Hi all, I've been wrestling with a problem with drdb and centos. I have successfully created one drbd resource, but when I try the create a 2nd, I get an error on one of the nodes: Lower device is already mounted. Command 'drbdsetup /dev/drbd1 disk /dev/hdd1 internal -1' terminated with exit code 20 The partition is not mounted from fstab etc and is newly created with parted after wiping this disk with dd. On the node with the problem I see: cat /proc/partitions major minor #blocks name 3 0 60034968 hda 3 1 514048 hda1 3 2 1534207 hda2 3 3 57986617 hda3 22 0 120060864 hdc 22 1 114688003 hdc1 22 64 117220824 hdd 22 65 114688003 hdd1 253 0 117219800 dm-0 253 1 114688003 dm-1 147 0 114556928 drbd0 On the other node the dm-0 and dm-1 do not occur. Being new to Linux, I am not sure where these come from. I have tried google, but nothing makes sense. This maybe a red herring, but dm-1 has the same number of blocks as hdd1 which I am trying to mount so I'm guessing that this is the cause of the problem. As I have tried changing every thing I can except the mb/processor and reinstalling, I'm really stuck. HELP Please. Rob

Hi Everyone, A client has an email in Evolution with an attachment: CNH_Specialized_Bid_Letter_Web_Ex_#1.doc When the file is opened directly from Evolution, OOo Writer complains: /home/rob/.evolution/cache/tmp/evolution-tmp-inF1Pe/CNH_Specialized_Bid_Letter_Web_Ex_ does not exist. But, the user's Evolution temp cache has a copy of the file: -rw-rw---- 1 rob rob 30208 Jun 23 00:43 CNH_Specialized_Bid_Letter_Web_Ex_#1.doc This problem appears to be similar to this bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=341482 It's not exactly the same: the effect is, though. I want to see if the posted patch will work. But, I'm also wondering if this is on the upstream distro's radar for U4. I search their bugzilla - didn't find anything. Anyone else run into this? command to echo size of images

All, Is there a command line program in centos to echo back the size of an image (gif,jpg,png)? I did see that file image.jpg sometimes works but reports the wrong image size. I see xview image.jpg reports the correct size but I dont want to see the image just get its size. Thanks for any suggestions. Jerry

Need help configuring additional serial ports

I installed a 2 port serial PCI card on a system running CentOS 4.3, but I can't get the additional serial ports to work. The card I used is from StarTech (http://www.startech.com/Product/ItemDetail.aspx? productid=PCI2S550&c=US). When it is detected by kudzu, it shows up as a "NetMos Technologies PCI 9835 Multi I/O Controller". I've included the output of "lspci" and "cat /proc/pci" below. The (very sparse) instructions for Linux support for this card state that you should look for the string "serial port x" in the contents of /proc/pci, and then use that information with the setserial command to configure the port as follows: # setserial /dev/ttyS2 port 0xc000 uart 16550 irq 11 baud_base 115200 The problem is that I can't find the equivalent of the "0xc000" and the IRQ on my system in the contents of /proc/pci. Hi, all. We've make custom isos of CentOS and having trouble during the installation. Here's what we did : Add our rpms to CentOS/RPMS Add a folder of scripts and two kickstart files to the base directory run "pkgorder /path/to/base i386 CentOS > /tmp/foo.txt" run "genhdlist --fileorder /tmp/foo.txt /path/to/base" rerun the pkgorder command Add a custom group to CentOS/base/comps.xml run "buildinstall --pkgorder /tmp/foo.txt --version 4.2 --product "CentOS" --release "BAR_V1" --discs "BAR" --prodpath CentOS --comp BARv1 /path/to/base" change isolinux/isolinux.cfg to add two labels, one for each ks file run "mkisofs -o foobar.iso -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -R -J -v /path/to/base" to generate the DVD iso. This iso works fine when we burn it to dvd and install from it but when we boot from DVD and select the kickstart file that installs from a USB drive, we get the following error : "trying to mount already-mounted image!" x86 uniprocessor 4GB memory

Hi there, I'm currently using CentOS 4.3 (Server edition) in a HP DC 5100 with the IntelR 915GV chipset, powered by a PIV 3.0GHZ. Now I'm facing a problem, with memory. I got myself 4GB of memory, the system bios detects it correctly, but in Linux can only see around 3.5gb memory. With the default kernel-smp (I use hyperthread) or with kernel-hugemem , I have the same results. Is there any way to workaround this issue? Thanks in advance, Bruno Sousa

If you have an AGP video card which you aren't actually using you can try selecting the minimum possible AGP apperture (window whatever) size (possibly even disable it?). This might help. Also removing the AGP card and using a junk 1-8MB svga card will also possibly work. In my experience the linear framebuffer of video cards is by far the greatest memory hog these days. Cheers, MaZe. Can someone explain why this: find . -depth -print0 | cpio --null -pmd /tmp/test will copy all files in and below the current directory -and- this: find . -depth -print | grep -v .iso$ | wc -l will count all the non-iso files -and- this: find . -depth -print | grep .iso$ | wc -l will count *only* the iso files -but- this: find . -depth -print0 | grep -v .iso$ | cpio --null -pmd /tmp/test doesn't copy *anything*? Any suggestions for a work-around would also be most welcome.

Just as an fyi on a good checklist for linux (not comprehensive but a good start) http://www.cisecurity.org/bench_linux.html And some good areas via google on secure centos installations. If they do it again then it wont be your perl script obviously as you mentioned disabling the script, but if not, is your script configured with use strict and taint? Is every var in the script checked to ensure the data is within an allowed range? Does the perl script rely on third-party modules? If so you might check there as well. The rest is an assumption that you may have php installed on the system and someone may have used a php script as a gateway into your system. Even though the box has been compromised you may get lucky if this is related to apache by looking at the timestamp on the files in /tmp and correlate those with your apache logs. If so check your php logs as well(if you enabled it in /etc/php.ini). Are you running in safe mode? There are some things you can do to help reduce the amount of damage a vulnerable php script can do: safe_mode = On safe_mode_gid = On safe_mode_include_dir = /path where any include files you trust reside. Read only by apache process safe_mode_exec_dir = /path to area where you allow any executables to be called from php scripts Also (not restricted to safe mode) is if this is a home server you can also restrict where php scripts can 'roam': open_basedir = /var/www/html (for example) will prevent php scripts from going outside the /var/www/html area. Hello, I have a server running CentOS 4.3 with all the latest updates. The server in question has been hacked by spammers a few times. The details of the hack have been basically the same every time. I find some directory created by the apache user account in /tmp. The new directory contains an html file, and a list of email addresses to spam and a perl script that spams all those email addresses with the html file. My question is why is this happening? Obviously it's some apache exploit. Why is this obvious? What else is exposed to the internet on this server? They could be coming in another way, then creating files owned by the apache user to make it look like an Apache problem. Is SSH exposed to the internet? Maybe there is a user with a weak password or something. I have removed mod_perl, that didn't help. I have now changed the permissions on the perl executable, that might help we will see, but that doesn't address the core problem. How is it that someone can upload arbitrary files to my server and then execute an arbitrary command via apache. What is exposed via apache? Are there any custom applications/CGI's? Tracking down whats causing a high load?

Hiya, Currently running Centos 4.2 x86_64 dist on a dual 3G xeon, 2G ram, scsi setupand everythings been running fine on it for some time. Then at 4am last night something kicked in (have mrtg running monitoring when) and since then its been running a load of about 1.5 (normally around 0.4). CPU usage is Cpu(s): 1.1% us, 0.6% sy, 0.0% ni, 97.9% id, 0.2% wa, 0.1% hi, 0.1%si. Can't see any new processes that would cause the load, just wondering is there any way to try and track down whats actually causing this? It's not excessive load, but want to add some new services and wary now, its something that seems wrong given the sudden increase at 4am (think thats when some o.s housekeeping tasks are normally scheduled, but there's none running that I can see that started today). Just hoping someone may have some tips on checking whats always waiting or how to isolate whats happening. As said, ps -ef shows no new processes, and cpu usage is very low. Tia, Ian

Hi Everyone, [yes, this is about a proprietary product, but I'm just asking for some tips/pointers] Has anyone tried installing the new Adobe Reader (7.0.8) RPM from Adobe on a CentOS 4.3 x86_64 box? I just attempted an upgrade from AdobeReader_enu-7.0.1-1 (also RPM install), and I'm getting this error: error: Failed dependencies: libGLU.so.1 is needed by AdobeReader_enu-7.0.8-1.i386 It looks like Adboe wants the i386 version of that library, which is provided by xorg-x11-Mesa-libGLU.i386. However, I already have the x86_64 version installed. What's stranger is that I was able to install the previous version without any problems. Any tips/suggestions/flames appreciated. completely custom rpm's

Hi During a 'normal' install i have to add a bunch of users and modify some files such as DNS, Syslog, ssh key files etc While i can do this with a shell script post install it would be VERY neat to just have all these changes packaged up into an rpm and i can then just rpm -i this post install. Can i do this and if so can anyone point me to a how-to that would help me through the steps required. thanks

Hi, I am trying to generate client certificates (to use in internal web/email servers) but the process is aborting. I can generate the CA OK but when I try to generate the client... openssl ca -days 365 -out certs/xxxx.crt -in csr/xxx.csr -config ../tls/openssl.cnf Using configuration from ../tls/openssl.cnf Enter pass phrase for ../CA/private/cakey.pem: wrong number of fields on line 1 (looking for field 6, got 1, '' left) Any ideas? Apache problem

hi I maintain 10 webservers which is used for add delivery using PHP.sometimes when the load is high my apache process suddenly dies & i restart apache. i find the following errors in my /var/log/messages/ server1 kernel: audit(1150892521.827:18474474): avc: denied { write } for pid=28135 comm="httpd" name="php-mmcache" dev=sda7 ino=2146317 scontext=root:system_r:httpd_t tcontext=system_u:object_r:var_t tclass=dir i think the above one is something related to selinux.so i disabled selinux stopped iptables & disabled firewall. /sbin/fixfiles restore but still i get the above error message in my /var/log/messages how to fix this??? when i run top d 1 i see a few Zombie process of httpd 12198 apache 16 0 0 0 0 Z 3.0 0.0 0:00.09 httpd <defunct> Os Centos 4.2 X86_64 bit Apache 2.0.52 below i am attaching the output of test.php which is in test.zip how can i fix this problem .. thanx & regards kishore chowdary

Back-leveling error?

This is all related to my struggles with Asterfax and libtiff. I rpm -U to libtiff 3.8.2 and I am still having troubles. So I decided to go back to libtiff 3.6.1 (oh and libtiff-devel that seems to be a prerec). So after a bit of playing that did not seem to do anything, I figured out to: rpm -U --oldprogram libtiff-3.6.1-8.i386.rpm libtiff-devel-3.6.1-8.i386.rpm and this seemed to work: rpm -q libtiff libtiff-3.6.1-8 But now things seem to be even more 'broken' if possible. Did I do the backleveling the right way? How do I check?

Hi Everyone, I've got a system running CentOS 4 x86_64 and have some i386 packages (e.g. Firefox) installed, too. I knew when I started out that this wasn't ideal, but worked nonetheless. And, so far, it has. I'm (and my client) are happy! A couple of days ago I updated the server from U2 to U3 (it's not a public system, and runs some critical software...U3 couldn't go in right away). Everything appeared to be going well until it came time to install the updates, when yum barfed: Transaction Check Error: file /usr/share/man/man1/asn1parse.1ssl.gz from install of openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 conflicts with file from package openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 file /usr/share/man/man1/nseq.1ssl.gz from install of openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 conflicts with file from package openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 file /usr/share/man/man1/s_client.1ssl.gz from install of openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 conflicts with file from package openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 file /usr/share/man/man1/s_server.1ssl.gz from install of openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 conflicts with file from package openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 file /usr/share/man/man1/sslpasswd.1ssl.gz from install of openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 conflicts with file from package openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 Looks like the x86_64 and i386 openssl packages install their man pages to the same location. Anyone else dealing with this? Is there a workaround or fix I'm not aware of? I'd appreciate any pointers. can't change login screen resolution

After boot up, on the login screen, I can't seem to find how to change the resolution. I've have it set at one resolution after login for all users, but still, the login screen remains the same. It's a bit annoying because I get a warning message from my monitor of incorrect settings and sometimes it wacks out. I think the refresh rate is what is causing it. Thanks.

Hi, I'm running an Opteron 64 bit server, and in an effort to re-join it to my nagios monitoring, I have tried the install nagios via Yum. When I type: yum install nagios, or nagios-nrpe, or nagios-plugins, I get: "Nothing to do". as output. In wanting to add the DAG repository to my machine, the documentation i've come across seems vague. Can someone advise me on either of these issues? Im not dual booting nor triple booting. CentOS is the only OS on the system. I have have to format and reload. I just select the partitions re-name them back to / or /boot etc..and select to format with ext3 patition type. I dont actually select each partition and delete them then re-create them. I have always done this even in centos3 and I never had the problem in centos3. Matter of fact I installed a true RHEL4 install and it does the same thing, also same result of RHEL3 as in centos3.

Hi, this may sound stupid, but; - I'd like to install unsupported x86/i386 smp kernel because I need some support (for eg. dual booting for r/w files for winXP) etc. I'm now using 4.3 latest smp kernel. (I've tested that x86 still runs better than x86_64 like I was told in January. Thanks for the advice.) Questions: Is there any documentation for how to install unsupported smp kernel so that'll be able to do normal updates (like I've been updating until now without features of unsupprted kernel) ? I've downloaded the kernel files (107), how should I install them (yes, I know how to install rpm files but; but for grub, for updating, for upgrading etc.) ? After updating kernel few times with normal updating processes there lies in grub many older kernel. Is there any process to delete them or do I have to do it manually ? If this is too boring to others or outside the topics of this mailing list, please reply straightly to me. Sendmail, mailertable and DNS weirdness.

Guys, I've had a weird problem with Sendmail misbehaving in a way I don't really understand. I've worked round the problem but I'd like to understand what was going on. The MX for one of our domains, blah.com, pointed at an internal Exchange server. Mail relayed to a Sendmail MailScanner which then delivered to Exchange for this domain. The domain expired leading to all its mail queueing in Sendmail. So far so sensible. While waiting for the domain to be renewed I setup a mailertable entry to bypass DNS and route mail directly to the Exchange server... blah.com smtp:[192.168.10.10] I rebuilt mailertable then tried flushing the queue with... sendmail -q -v -qRblah ... which resulted in a bunch of "Transient parse error -- message queued for future delivery" errors due to DNS resolution failure. I thought mailertable entries bypassed DNS? Does Sendmail cache the state of the destination for queued messages somehow? In the qf${msgid} files in the spool? I tried restarting MailScanner (and hence both Sendmail processes), same problem. I read ( http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/doc8.12/op-sh-3.html ) that Sendmail can, when configured with HostStatusDirectory enabled, retain information on the status of hosts on disk but "sendmail -bh" returned nothing and "sendmail -bH", just in case, didn't help either. So, was mailertable being bypassed because these messages had already been attempted to be delivered before the mailertable changes? Anyone know what was going on here? I worked around it by just setting up a quick zone for blah.com with an MX in it but I'd like to understand WTF was going on with mailertable for future reference. Will.

even more details: 1. I use Mailscanner/postfix in the 3 MX's servers. 2. Using dig I get exactly the same of what I have in my bind server. 3. http://dnsreport.com/ reports no problem at all. 4. Appended "1" in /etc/fstab entries CentOS4.X installs

In my /etc/fstab here is just a snippet LABEL=/1 ....<rest of line> LABEL=/boot1 ....<rest of line> When i installed centOS-4.3 and it has appeared after starting to use any version of centOS4 was that the labels in my fstab were getting the "1" appended to each label... but if the all the labels for my partitions are appended with the "1" and i format and reload they show up in my partition setup during installation and i re-label them appropriately without the "1" and the /etc/fstab doesnt have the "1" appended... its like every other install the "1" gets appended....anyone come across this... if show how can i change it....i know its not like it makes a difference but I just noticed wondering why this happens.

And later I have to wait for them to be unswapped, the Desktop looses its promptness - annoying. In win2k and winXP there is a registry key property which prevents swapping while there is still RAM. xorg display problems

Hi all, Up until today everything has been fine with CentOS on my Toshiba laptop. I booted into CentOS 4.3 today and Kudzu detected my video card for some reason. I let it configure it (wish I hadn't now). I can still get in. X and Gnome work. But the video resolution is 800x640. The LCD is capable of 1024x768. I cannot change it using Gnome tools or direct editing of /etc/X11/xorg.conf With the Gnome "Display" system tool I cannot change the monitor to "Generic LCD Display". Any help you can offer on getting the 1024x768 display mode to work again would be appreciated. SuperMicro X7DBE with CentOS4?

I am planning to build a server based on the SuperMicro X7DBE+-O motherboard. This server will have two dual-core Xeon processors and a 3ware 9550SX raid card. Has anyone built a server based on this motherboard? Are there any issues with the smp/dual-core support in CentOS4 that might cause problems? I appreciate any input. I'm just looking to find out about any possible problems before I spend the money for the MB, CPU, and amazingly expensive RAM. Thanks, -- Bowie

I've installed bind on centos 4.3.. This is a part of my config file: example.com. IN MX 10 mail.example.com. example.com. IN MX 15 mail1.example.com. example.com. IN MX 20 mail2.example.com. mail.example.com. IN A x.x.x.x mail1.example.com. IN A x.x.x.x mail2.example.com. IN A x.x.x.x Every seems to be fine, but I'm constantly receiving messages in my 3 MX servers, even if mail.example.com (the less MX record) is available waiting for connections from outside... Why if my less mx record server is available the others servers are constantly receiving messages for my domain? Thanks for your time Israel

More details: 1. The 3 servers are in diferents networks... 2. My higher's mx servers (mx 15 and mx 20) receive a lot of legitimate mail.. It also received a lot of spam too.... :-( 3. MX1 server is in the main network (backbone).. It's the most accesible network of the others Mx's 4. Mx 2 and Mx 3 are constantly receiving messages... Like if the dns were the same MX record for the three servers.. Is it possible to take a Centos 3.7 machine - that was installed with the 32 bit version of CentOS, and update it to a 64 bit kernel? In other words - convert an i386 to ia64. I don't care about the applications, just the kernel. -Mark

Routing w/ Two Interfaces

I have two interfaces on a centos machine with IPs 192.168.2.15 and 192.168.3.15. The routing table is: # route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.3.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth1 192.168.2.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 169.254.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth1 default 192.168.2.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0 The gateway 192.168.2.1 is a wireless router on which I have a static route for 192.168.3.0/24 to 192.168.2.15. The problem is I cannot communicate between these networks. If I ping from a machine on 192.168.2.0 to a machine on 192.168.3.0 it never makes it. If I run tcpdump -i eth0 on the machine with two nics, I can see the ICMP packets coming in so I know the static route on the wireless router is working. If I run tcpdump -i eth1 I cannot see the ICMP packets. So the routing is wrong. I can successfully ping the machine on the 192.168.3.0 network from the machine with two interfaces. I would think that a packet sent from 192.168.2.100 for 192.168.3.128 would go to the gateway, get sent to 192.168.2.15 which it would go though the above listed routing table, match 192.168.3.0 and get sent to eth1. 64-bit ISO Burning Failures

Hi, I have downloaded several different sets of the 64-bit ISOs, and have burned them to CD using various of my known-good ISO burning softwares, including Nero and DeepBurn on Windows, as well as the native CD burning KDE linux tool on Xandros Linux. I am using mirrors from the site, like kernel.org. I have chosen low burning speeds also, but when I insert the ISO CD into a server and boot it up, the ISO doesn't work. I have all of the BIOs/boot settings perfect, the machine is definitely 64-bit, and even when I insert another OS, like Fedora, or Whitebox, it works fine. Is there something i'm not doing, or doing wrong when burning these 64 bit CD's? I'm in a colo facility and would really like to leave here having converted a bunch of my WBEL and FC boxes to 64-bit Centos. Any help would be much appreciated. -karlski

Would that driver survive kernel upgrades, I'm guessing it would being modular ? (please don't tell me that 3ware is the only make to use, tw_cli is not exactly user friendly). Most definitely! However I don't plan to write anything about it just now. I want to experiment with it. myslef a few people have been thinking about it for use on cluster head nodes. It may allow us to try various OS's without having to install a new distro. Plus we can do some things with running a stable base OS and then use Xen to run some experimental stuff. Jeff

I've looked at the XenSource site, a wiki site that tells you how to get CentOS working in a Xen shell (or whatever it's called). Tripwire for CentOS

Hi, I literally have about 36 machines running CentOS on a private network, and will probably change the remaining 30 or so away from Whitebox or RH in the near term. One thing I just noticed was when I tried to search out Tripwire RPM's, that none seemed evident. Can anyone point me in the direction of an Tripwire RPM that works with CentOS 4.3, or advise me on how to create one from the Tripwire source download on Sourceforge? -karlski

Missing File

hi to ALL,, im running CentOS 4.3 Final, one thing experience in my box i have /tmp (partition/directory) inside that i have a directory installer and i file one week after the file and directory (installer) inside the /tmp is missing, can i retrieve that directory and file? it is normal some file in the /tmp is missing?,im not deleting that file and directory. hope you can help me ,thank you in advcance,im newbie in CentOS Linux. SCSI Raid

I hate to bring up the raid card wars again, but... :) It's pretty well established that 3ware is a good "real" hardware raid card for SATA drives. So what is a good card for SCSI raid? My searches have come up with Adaptec and LSI as the main players here. Are the LSI MegaRAID cards "real" hardware raid? Which cards can give good raid 5 performance? -- Bowie

Check integrity or rootkits on remote server?

Hello, when one has physical access to a computer, he can run something like tripwire, with keys and checksum on a separate, write-only media, to verify the integrity of the system. What if the system is a remote one (in my case Centos 4.3 on a User Mode Linux VPS some hundred of KMs from here)? Does it still make sense to run tripwire remotely? If yes, how, since you cannot plug a floppy or USB drive in the machine? What if tripwire was never ran? Does it make sense, on a Centos system without physical access, to download there and run remotely one of those rootkit detection tools? Would its findings be surely accurate? Generally speaking, how does one handle these issues on remote systems? Thanks in advance for any comment, Marco

rpm question

Hi everyone, I am writing a small tool that will compare a file on my machine with the the same file on an rpm repository and then give me a diff. E.g. # rpm-file-diff /etc/samba/smb.conf will show a diff output so that I can see at a glance what changes I have made to my local smb.conf file. I already know about rpmdiff but that compares whole packages and not files. Anyway while fiddling with this I have tried "rpm -qpi http://mirror....". Sometimes this works on my local mirror but mostly not (see below) and I have never had it to work on sunsite.org.uk. I know this seems really trivial but I'm worried that I don't understand what's wrong. As a follow up, I was able to find a *free* program to attempt to recover my lost data. (I can't find the name of the program in a quick search, if anyone's interested I'll check my system at home tonight and post it). The software was able to see the lost partitions, but there was a huge amount of CRC errors in trying to read the disk. So I suspect there was a failure of the physical drive itself, more than just mere corruption of the partition table. This was a drive that fell on the floor once, but seemed ok when I installed Centos on it, so I left it in the system. Maybe it was already weak, and the erratic electricity killed it for good. I was able to recover quite a bit of lost data, but a lot of it appears to be gone forever. This is a good reminder on the importance of keeping backups of important stuff.
