SCSI install to IDE install - help

Hi, a customer has a Centos installation on SCSI disk (aic7xxx), there are some programs that he no longer have the installation media (some accounting stuff). Due to the SCSI disk going bad we must tranfer the installation to some other disks. SCSI disks are very difficult to find here and must be ordered (and wait about 45 days to arrive at the dealer). Can I clone the SCSI disk to a IDE Disk with a clone utility such as Acronis TrueImage and then rebuild the boot loader? The SCSI is 72gb with the bootloader, one swap partition and the second partition is / The customer will maintain the exactly same server, we will only change the storage media. some other things to consider? anyone compiled alsa 1.0.11 on 4.3? I get errors compileing alsa-drivers. Thanks for any suggestions if you have done it. Anyone can try it download from http://alsa-project.org and doing the extract, ./configure and make. With out the make install nothing should be affected on your system if you dont want to use the new version. Thanks, jerry

Hi there -- I have completed downloading the BIND software onto the system in question, and I am now ready to configure the DNS server. The type of server I want to create is a caching server. The reason for this is I want the system to resolve hostnames exclusively within a private network, 192.168.0.x, and the server will NOT have access to the Internet. I know I will need to modify the /etc/named.conf and other files but I am not familiar with what settings are needed. What tools and/or entries can I use to complete the configuration of the server? First I did a 'man rpm' Then I searched within man for "requires" There were a couple and so I read the one pertaining to "query" Then I did "rpm -q --requires bind" It gave me a list of needed items. All, I'm looking for tools available for linux that will allow us to do two things: 1) Analyze our Checkpoint Firewall-1 NG log files and provide reports / graphs / pretty management pictures. 2) Analyze our network traffic (Cisco routers and HP switches) and provide reports / graphs / pretty management pictures. I've implemented ntop, which is pretty cool, and I'm looking at mrtg. Anybody else using anything else? Thanks! Ben

Preventing the nightly backup from disturbing the cache

Hi all, I have a server with 4GB of memory and a workload that allows it to work mostly from memory without a lot in the way of disk reads. However, every night the backup distrurbs that situation by reading every file on the system. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I'd like to be able to tell the kernel, hey this program is going to be reading a bunch of files serially, so please don't cache the data. Is that possible? Thanks, Steve

Permissive SELinux hangs some services

SELinux is set to permissive mode and warns on startup of a service (during boot-up): Warning! Could not relabel /dev/pts/0 with user_u:object_r:initrc_devpts_t, not relabeling.Operation not permitted So far, so good. But this logging let's this application and all that should start after it hang. ps then shows: initlog -q -c /etc/rc3.d/S98bigsister start (bigsister is a monitoring agent) if I wait long enough the above warning gets written to messages and startup of that daemon succeeds. However, the other daemons after it don't start. If I kill the initlog process fast enough the other daemons start, nothing gets logged and the bigsister service fails to start. syslog is clearly started and working at that time. If I set SELINUX=disabled the startup process runs like normal. So it's clearly that SELinux logging (or something else in regard to SELinux, although disabled) that makes this fail. Xen on CentOS 4.3

Hello, Has anyone set up Xen on an existing CentOS 4.3 system? Does it work well, or is it better to wipe the system and start clean? I haven't found a lot of information about this specifically. Secondly, I have found on the xen source website downloads for xen 3.02, which are meant for FC4 or RHEL (U1). I'm tempted to try the RHEL downloads, but I don't have any spare machines to test on, so I'd have to do it to a live system (!). Even though the xen download is for RHEL U1, will it work on RHEL U3/CentOS 4.3 machine? Has anyone tried this? I'm anxious to consolidate three of my servers onto one under used machine because one of the three is going to suffer a HD failure soon (it's locking up every now and then, and I hear the HD making clicking noises!). kickstart

Hello, I've been trying to kickstart a install centos from a USB memory stick. Everything with that is working fine, but I seem to be having a problem with the ks.cfg file. When I boot the install media from the usb drive, the the boot prompt I type linux ks=hd:/dev/uba1/ks.cfg Then I peek at the logs and it even says * getting kickstart file * getting kickstart file from harddrive * Loading ks from device on path dev/uba1/ks.cfg * getFileFromBlockDevice(, dev/uba1/ks.cfg) But when the install script starts, it still ask me for install media location. I couldn't help but take notice at some of the responses that were coming in from when I was posting questions due to my ignorance of Linux. Some people were quick to help, some advanced users I am sure ignored me because im not worth their time, and then some other users tried to help but was unable to dumb their speech down to newb levels. However I am thankful that there is people here to help out. I am hoping someone with CentOS will take notice at my difficulty in finding the bloody manuals and will put a link for future newbs that says "Download Manuals Here". I also hope in the future if I have questions I will be able to get the answers I seek and those who helped me before will be able to help me again. Thanks

Backup FAQ: PLEEZE include in FAQ?

I know there are a million ways to skin a cat, but we must have 1,000,001 discussed in the archives already. I guess folks don't know about "search". So, I'm hoping that the pending FAQ might have mention of one or more of the *excellent* threads resident in the archives regarding backup? And just so this post is not a total waste, I'll mention that cpio can be your friend if you worry about device nodes, etc. It has many features, is well respected, is "mature", ... However it is not a backup *system*, but a good all-around tool for "roll your own" folks who aren't happy with rsynch for whatever reason. It supports tar formats, has check summing, ... Now, please. Anyone with backup Q's, check the archives first, get a preliminary feel for which way you lean and then query the list for *new* insights, opinions, recommendations, etc. after you spew a few words about the feelings you got during investigations. No offense intended and if you take any, you get to keep it. TIA -- Bill

I'm running CentOS 4.3 on Intel. I don't have any tape device on my system for backup, but I have an entire disk (/dev/sdb) for backup ... my question is: How can I backup ALL my filesystems to some place of my backup hdd (dev/sdb) using dump/restore? I don't want to use tar. Regards Israel

Permission denied using mount.cifs

I'm having a strange problem mounting a share from a Windows 2003 server using cifs: mount.cifs //osirus.ficticious.org/inetpub /inetpub -ouser=transfer,pass=dkfhjdjskd It comes back immediately with: mount error 13 = Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) However, the command below works. (abeit with about a 15 second wait before it comes back): mount.smbfs //osirus.ficticious.org/inetpub /inetpub -ousername=transfer,password=dkfhjdjskd Info from smbclient -L: OS=[Windows Server 2003 3790 Service Pack 1] Server=[Windows Server 2003 5.2] Anyone else familiar with this problem? firefox-1.5.0.2-2.1.c4.centos.i386.rpm in the testing repo produces this error when running it as non-rrot and also as root Firefox could not install this item because "install.rdf" (provided by the item) is not well formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem. Hello, we are trying to get a QLogic 4050C flying on CentOS 4.3 in an Opteron system ... So far I was able to download and install the drivers from QL's website. I can also successfully connect to my remote iscsi device now, but as soon as I access it (e.g. formating the device) the connections "hangs" and does not recover until I hardly reboot the machine. Is anyone else experiencing problems with QLogic iSCSI cards? Is anyone happy with them on CentOS? ;) Thanks for your comments, -- Stephan A. How To Approach a Re-install Questions

Hi All, I've just had to relocate and am using a new installation of Linux. I wasn't able to clone the previous machine's drive, so copied the directories to our server via FTP, but, I am wondering how best to approach this as I've never done this before. I'm interested in preserving all home stuff as well as apps I previously installed, but wonder whether just copying from old to new installation will work. It's the same OS and version. Will I run across lots of roblems with this? Should I just re-install everything,and save myself any issues? Curious. What are your thoughts on this? Cheers. Mark Sargent

Upgrade of Centos 4.1 with 4.2 ISO disc

Can I upgrade my Centos 4.1 system with the 4.2 ISO install disc? If so, how do I do it? It seams to want to do a full (i.e. format, wipe out old) install over everything. I do not want to lose my various configurations (e.g. kppp, kde desktop settings, etc) that I have already set up under 4.1.

Since these files have the same version number as what is already installed, what is the cleanest way of reinstalling them? I can remove and reinstall lvm2-cluster, but I can't do this with lvm2 since it is required by other things. This system is a vanilla Centos 4 system that has been updated to current via the standard yum repositories plus the csgfs repository. There are a few applications that were built from source, but these are all high-level applications and shouldn't affect the cluster at all. -- Bowie

Backing up CentOS

Can anyone suggest a good open source/free backup software that works on CentOS? I was reading through the manuals on how to back things up and it said do 1 of 2 things. Buy a 3rd party software packages or make one from source. Well I have no clue how to do the 2nd option and I don't want to spend any money so I figured I would as you gurus. BTW I am newb so easier the software the better. Thanks.

Hmm...no responses at all. Has anyone else seen this error? I'm reluctant to move toward production with this server if I can't find out something about this error. Something I forgot to mention about the backupexec agent. small issue with bind

I tried to do a "yum install bind" and it said no packages found I then tried up2date bind and it installed bind for me. Is yum not completely setup correctly? Just thought th yum install bind would have worked also. I am using centos 4.3 x86_64. DNS was not selected as package to install when my system was built. Jerry

Centos as a network recorder and request

I am looking at using CentOS to use as a network recorder to enhance our security analysis. During my research I found that the linux kernel (not CentOS specific) has a bad problem of dropping packets on gigabit connections. This problem exists even on a dual xeon system with 1gb ram using a minimal install. Once I found the ethereal performance wiki I realized the problem was not in the system but in the manner in which packets are moved from the kernel to userland. http://wiki.ethereal.com/Performance The only solution I can find to address this is a kernel patch called pf_ring http://www.ntop.org/PF_RING.html I would prefer to not recompile the kernel and instead stay with the supportable baseline provided by centos. But, in order to reduce dropped packets, having pf_ring compiled into the kernel appears to be my only solution unless someone here knows another way they want to share. I did some mailling list and forum archive research on recompiling the kernel and followed (for awhile) the 'newbie kernel question' thread in hopes of finding some answers on how to do this using the centos sources without going to kernel.org. >From what I gather recompiling is not recommended (understandable from a support viewpoint) so is there enough interest from the CentOS community (and from the CentOS team) to request this to be added, maybe as a separate branch like the 64bit iso's? If not, again understandable as that would be yet 1 more branch to support, then would someone please provide link/links to more information on recompiling the centos kernel.src.rpm? Googling I found all kinds of information but it either dealt with the 2.4 branch, 2.6 when it was still in testing (digital hermit), involved other distros (Installing PF_RING and nProbe on Fedora Core 4), or was for stock RedHat Enterprise and although CentOS uses the src.rpms from RedHat, I do not want to assume the compile process is the same and end up shooting myself in the foot. Having a process that can be followed for CentOS 4.3 to add functionality to the stock kernel would be a great edition for people like me who have had no need in the past to recompile the kernel or roll-their-own (yeah I looked at linux from scratch too as an option). As a side note, based on some of the previous threads involving centos 4.3 and compiling kernels my timing for this post is probably not the best. It is not my intention to start more arguing but to simply pose my current problem and seek assistance from the CentOS community for a solution. Thanks, Greg

Hi, I am tring to install mkcdrec on centos 4.2. ( makes a bootable backup image of linux) I am using an rpm that I found for FC4 but it won't install it says that I am missing a package. perl(are) required by mkcdrec, v0.9.1, 1 I have check using yum and I have perl installed + lots of moduals. Hi, I've hit an unpatched kernel issue while trying to build on sources see the header for version details.. arch/i386/kernel/built-in.o(.init.text+0x1585): In function `setup_arch': : undefined reference to `acpi_boot_table_init' make: *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] Error 1 It seems that I would need to install (centos/redhat) patches after installing/building the kernel source tree from the kernel-2.6.9-34.EL.src.rpm Is that correct ?? thanks, Peter

rpm build difference?

I noticed a strange thing on my CentOS 4 workstations today. Immediately after installing the tetex suite (tetex-xdvi tetex-dvips tetex tetex-latex tetex-afm tetex-fonts), "rpm -V tetex" reports some package inconsistencies: rpm -V tetex ........C /usr/bin/amstex ........C /usr/bin/bamstex ........C /usr/bin/bplain ........C /usr/bin/lambda ........C /usr/share/texmf/web2c/amstex.fmt ........C /usr/share/texmf/web2c/bamstex.fmt ........C /usr/share/texmf/web2c/bplain.fmt ........C /usr/share/texmf/web2c/cont-en.efmt etc.. After investigating, it appears that these files belong to tetex and rpm -V inconsistencies appear only after I also install tetex-latex. The strange thing about it is that I can't find the definition of "C" in the rpm manual page. Moreover, the entire field where C is printed on CentOS is not printed on RHEL4. I tried looking at the differences in the source RPMs for RHEL 4 and CentOS 4 but couldn't find anything. Any thoughts on the rpm issue? -akop

Since you mentioned BackupExec, I use the backup exec linux agent and it works fine and ties into our centralized backup system for our windows,linux and unix systems. I used to use Mondo Archive (I was going to provide a link but their site is unavailable now...) to create automated cd restore images on a weekly basis. I could then quickly recover via ISO images and then would restore the incremental changes via backup exec. force 10 megabit full duplex

I figured out how to force 10 megabit full duplex on my ethernet interface. The trick is i need it to stick in case of a reboot so i don't have to reforce it. I have not been able to figure that one out yet. I have not found it in the man's or google yet. I am experiencing a folder display problem in squirrelmail [SF issue 1471703] which is caused by messages containing a From: header whose data string matches the following regexp: =?iso-2022-jp?B?[.*]=?=[.*] It has been suggested that I require php-iconv extentions to solve this but I seem unable to locate a CentOS or RedHat-EL4 rpm providing this package. Can anyone point me to a location where I can get this package for CentOS-4.3? Automounting Problems (CentOS 4.2 v/s CentOS 4.0)

Hello, Auto-mounting of USB flash-drives and CD-RW (as well as CD-R) was working fine with CentOS 4.0 release for all users. This feature of auto-recognition and mounting is not working with CentOS 4.2 release for any user. I have checked the usual possible points of problems -- fstab, fstab-sync, haldaemon, etc. -- but have found no problems. Any suggestions on other possible work-arounds ? Thanks, -- Raj

i believe [not sure] during installation i picked secondary language Spanish [puerto rico] i dont see it either @ desktop manage under language [ i do see spanish and spanish mexico and i dont see either under system/preferences-langague, all i see is english. how could i add another language after instalation and how could i add languages to system preferences thanks

Problems Formatting /boot With CentOS 4.3 on a DL360 G3

I have been trying to install CentOS 4.3 on an HP DL360 G3 (with dual Xeon 3.2 GHz, a Smart Array 5i, and two 36 GB disks doing RAID 1 mirroring). I'm doing all defaults (including the disk and LVM setup) and using the "Minimal" checkbox at the bottom of the Custom machine type package selection screen, so it's a very "vanilla" install. It zips through the "Formatting / file system..." just fine in a couple of seconds. When it gets to "Formatting the /boot file system..." it quickly moves up to about 90-95% complete, and then it totally locks up... the mouse quits moving, the animated cursor locks up... everything. I even left it overnight just to be sure and still the same. But, when I stick in a CentOS 4.2 CD, it runs fine. Also, I ran a media check on the 4.3 CD and it checks out fine. Any ideas? Thanks! I am not interested in ecrypted communication with a certificate. Just plain auth. one-shot raid mirror to remote?

I have a filesystem on a RAID1 partition created with a 'missing' mirror so I can periodically sync with an external drive for backup. Now I'd like to move the contents to a different machine that has a matching partition with minimal downtime. Is it possible to export the new partition via iscsi or an nbd device so that the old system will sync to it over the network allowing an unmount of the old to be followed by an immediate mount of the new mirror with a very short time when it will be unavailable? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

I was about to install clamav from the dag repo, but added the kbs-CentOS-Extra repo lately. So, there's one as well and I thought I might better get this one since it is rebuilt for CentOS. I'm getting a few confusing dependencies, though. fedora-usermgmt noarch 0.8-1 kbs-CentOS-Extras 7.7 k fedora-usermgmt-setup noarch 0.8-1 kbs-CentOS-Extras 5.7 k fedora-usermgmt-shadow-utils noarch 0.8-1 kbs-CentOS-Extras 6.5 k Which made me think a second time and stop installing. There's no description for fedora-usermgmt. Can I install these three packages without concern? Folks, I just yum'd clamav last night for my mailserver. There do not appear to be any man pages for this package. Is there just web documents on what to do to create the configuration file, or is that already done, and I haven't found it yet? Thanks.. sam

RPMforge mplayerplug-in seems to be locking up my sound device

Got home from vacation last night and ran yum update. Among other things installed was mplayerplug-in-3.25-1.el4.rf ... now any time I attempt to view CNN video, my sound device locks up -- I eventually end up having to kill firefox, and anything thereafter that attempts to access sound (such as system-config-soundcard) also ends up wedged. Previously this only happened sporadically and after several hours of successful use of the plugin. I have nVidia onboard sound, using the snd_intel8x0 driver module. Anybody have any suggestions?

Raid issue

I am curious about something. I have a friend that made a software raid 1 partition across a 250 gig 7200 rpm drive and an 80 gig 7200 rpm hard disk drive. he shut the system down normally to clean it out and when it came back up he gets the following: a superblock on /dev/md0 failed would mdadm --assemble --force fix it or lead to more damage? -- My "Foundation" verse: Isa 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. Problems with 4.3 install - didnt write boot record

the first time i tried to install centos on my fileserver it detected my reiserfs drives but then didnt give me a kernel to actually access them - strike one now im trying centos on my mail server, wipe the drives, created a mirrored raid array from the setup, (took over 14 hours to format and sync) finally finished the install AND IT DIDNT WRITE THE BOOT RECORD! when it rebooted i got my grub menu from GENTOO! - strike two, now im back into the install cd, trying to figure out how to install grub like the install should have done for me, but there is no grub command at the prompt (trying to use tab completion) im ready to hurt something im so frustrated, can anyone help me out here? ive seen http://www.dur.ac.uk/a.d.stribblehill/mirrored_grub.html but without the grub command that page is useless. Im sure someone has to be booting RH/CentOS off mirrored software raid, some help please! id like to get this thing going tonight if possible, thanks! Nick

yum error

Im new to yum, so i really dont know how to fix this problem, i just added the dag repos, havent installed anything yet, just wanted to see what it was, i did a "yum update" and i get this error: [root@mail etc]# yum update Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories Reading repository metadata in from local files Resolving Dependencies --> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Hello, I have a webcam that I wish to view from the internet. It is a wireless linksys model with an ip address of 192.168.1.15. I have it set on port 8081, 192.168.1.15:8081. I am using the IP Masquerade HowTo script. On Suse I can do this with a sysconfig switch and Suseconfig, is there something similar on RH-based systems? rescue boot - udev question

Is there some documentation about what happens to populate /dev when you boot the install disk in rescue mode and it automatically mounts an installed system and suggests that you chroot to /mnt/sysimage? With Centos 3.x you could do the mounts yourself in cases where it wouldn't work automatically and end up looking approximately the same. Pause after network initialization

Is there a "proper" way to put in a pause after network initialization to make sure the network *really* is up? I've had this issue for a while with e1000 cards (even on 100MB networks), where the first NFS mount will fail b/c the network reports up but isn't, really. Now, I'm also seeing the same issue on cluster nodes hooked to a switch with jumbo frames enabled. I used to hack it with a 'sleep 60' at the end of the "start" function in /etc/init.d/network, but that goes away whenever initscripts gets updated. My new hack is to put 'mount -a -t nfs' in /etc/rc.local. Any other suggestions? -- Joshua Baker-LePain Department of Biomedical Engineering Duke University

I am attempting to get multipath working with device-mapper (CentOS 4.2 and 4.3). It works on EVERY install of mine from RH (also v4.2, 4.3), but the same multipath.conf imported to all my installs of CentOS do not work. Note that I have tested a working 4.2 configuration file from RH on CentOS 4.2 and a working 4.3 configuration (it changed slightly) on CentOS 4.3. Neither worked. Our production systems are RH 4.2 so the 4.2 configuration file is below. Configuration: Promise vTrak 300i iSCSI iscsi-initiator-utils from 4.2/4.3 device-mapper-multipath from 4.2/4.3 Procedure: 1. Configure iscsi.conf and multipath.conf 2. Start iscsi: service iscsi start 3. Start multipath: service multipathd start 4. Make sure no stale paths exist: multipath -F 5. firewall and * suggestions

Hi, I am going to set up an office of 30 employees and since it's the first time I thought I will ask for suggestions (trying to make a CentOS base office :) ). I was planning to re use an old Compaq LPr PII 450, sw mirrored scsi 10000rpm disks, 448Mb RAM, to build a CentOS based firewall and I was wondering if this hardware would be enough to serve 30 clients (I already have a centos firewall serving 8 users on a PC celeron 1,3Ghz machine and top shows average load 0.00). The other service they'll need is filesharing, which will be Samba running on samba Dell PE1800 (although we could use a compaq 1850r PIII 600), while for the phone system I would like to set up Asterisk and I was wondering if anyone has had a good experience with the Xorcom TS-1, which seems a nice cost effective system. Suggestions are very welcome, have a nice day. Simone

I have some rpm packages that I built locally. After installing and configuring them, I found a problem that required a source patch. I have rebuilt the rpms, but since they have the same version number as the original, I can't use "yum localupdate" to install them. Is there a clean way to do this with yum, or do I just need to remove the old packages and then install the new ones? -- Bowie

'partitions not contstrained to drive'???

I was trying to do a new install on RAID1 and my first drive happened to be partitioned correctly from previous use so I tried the 'clone partions' option in disk druid to create matching ones on the second drive and got this error message: "The source drive has partitions which are not constrained to the drive /dev/sda".
