The only packages I want to update are the ones from the csgfs repo and whatever else is needed to fill the requirements of those packages. I don't want to update all the packages from base and updates, just the ones that are needed to update csgfs. -- Bowie

device-mapper multipath

I am attempting to get multipath working with device-mapper (CentOS 4.2 and 4.3). It works on EVERY install of mine from RH (also v4.2, 4.3), but the same multipath.conf imported to all my installs of CentOS do not work. Note that I have tested a working 4.2 configuration file from RH on CentOS 4.2 and a working 4.3 configuration (it changed slightly) on CentOS 4.3. Neither worked. Our production systems are RH 4.2 so the 4.2 configuration file is below. Configuration: Promise vTrak 300i iSCSI iscsi-initiator-utils from 4.2/4.3 device-mapper-multipath from 4.2/4.3 Procedure: 1. Configure iscsi.conf and multipath.conf 2. Start iscsi: service iscsi start 3. Start multipath: service multipathd start 4. Make sure no stale paths exist: multipath -F 5. That is, according to the multipath wiki, the "target length in 512-bytes blocks" for the multipath device. Update of CentOS 4.0 to 4.3

I need to update a CentOS 4.0 system to CentOS 4.3. In my opinion, I should start out with a "yum update yum centos-yumconf" and then follow that with a "yum update". Does anyone have any other input as to what other packages might be needed to be updated with yum and centos-yumconf before the mass upgrade? Thanks, Barry

apache permission problems

Well i finally got CentOS 4.3 booting, apache is installed, and im trying to setup some virutal hosts, i want the main site to be my default virtual host (which i had on my gentoo server) but i keep getting permission denied errors: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. and in the logs i get: (13)Permission denied: access to /favicon.ico denied (13)Permission denied: access to /favicon.ico denied (13)Permission denied: access to / denied i have even tried chmod 777 on the /home/user/public_html dir and that still didnt resovle the issue. horde updates and config files

Horde RPMs got updated last night. However, the way configuration files were handled wasn't probably the best. Building external modules on 4.3

I'm trying to build the zaptel (v1.2.5) modules on a 4.2 machine upgraded to 4.3, but running into a kernel version problem. The kernel I'm running is 2.6.9-34.ELsmp and I have the kernel-devel-2.6.9-34 RPM installed. I believe the problem is that the modules are being built as if for the uniprocessor kernel (the default for kernel-devel?) leading to the error: zaptel: disagrees about version of symbol struct_module when I try to load the module. I *think* I probably need to grab the kernel sources, take the config file for the SMP kernel from that and drop it into kernel-devel, edit the kernel-devel top-level makefile to get the version name correct and then rebuild the kernel config to get the right kernel version set in the zaptel modules. Is that correct, or have I missed something obvious? James

Multiple LUN support

Hi all... I have a scsi Tape library. Centos only sees the tape drive portion of the library. I need to enable Multiple LUN support to get the library and tape drive recognized. I am looking for some help enabling multiple lun support in Centos 4. I had a procedure on how to do this in the 2.4 kernel but it doesn't seem to work in the 2.6. Any help would be appreciated. Config: Standard intel server board. p4 processor (3) 3-ware controllers Lsi Logic u320 scsi card External SCSI tape library. Worked before on a Whitebox linux 2.4 kernel, just added: options scsi_mod "max_scsi_luns=16" to /etc/modules.conf and rebuilt the initrd image, then reboot. All worked fine. But Whitebox is crap and was giving me probs and also want everything standardized on CentOS! Thanks!

Robust Search Solution (with CentOS 4.3)

I've got about 10,000 docs I'd like to devise a search/index for. I found a perl script called Perlfect that can do that on an old P3 but at the astronomical time of 7 hours. Another script(cgi/perl) at hotscripts can do the same but allows the "rm -rf /" exploit. DoH!? Is there anything perl/flatfile that can search/index faster? This is a nice job for an aging P3 in the corner so php/MySQL is not an option. Centos 4.x, gnome & key "repeating"

Hi, I have a strange problem with Centos 4 (all kernels so far). When i am running gnome (havent tried KDE) and i go into a browser or even just a console window and type something a letter repeates it self 10-20 times (likeeeeee thhhhhhissssss). I can turn this of the the keyboard settings (repeating keys) but then i cant hold down backspace and so on ....I think this is some kind of software error but cant really figure it out :| My hardware is: Nvidia NFORCE4 chipset AMD X2 4200+ 2Gb Memory SATA harddrive SMP kernel (all of the Centos kernels seem to have this problem...havent tried the uni processor onces tho) I've also ran Fedora Core 4 & Fedora Core 5 on this box and have no problems there. Sendmail problem

Hello, I am having a problem with returned mail. I don't have something configured correctly. I have 6 virtual hosts on one machine and mail sent from these host is being returned. selfsigned ssl certificate

Hello, I need to setup a secure ssl site but I'm using a FC3 howto wich is not compatibel anymore wwith Centos 4.2 Now I removed the standard crt.key and server.key files and used the make testcert script in /etc/httpd/conf to create a new one with the appropriate company name and such. But this certificate requires a passphrase everytime apache starts and I rather would like to remove this passphrase. Does anyone know a good quick and dirty howto for centos to create a selfsigned ssl certificate without a passphrase? Ivago

Been having this problem, and posted about it before. Thinking it was a memory issue, I've replaced all memory on the server. However, the problem has continued. Server is a Proliant DL380 (8GB RAM, 2 Xeon CPU), running CentOS 3.6, all patches up-to-date. Kernel is 2.4.21-40.ELsmp (problem seems to have first manifested on kernel 2.4.21-37.0.1.ELsmp). Disk is CCISS hardware RAID-5, straight partitioning (no LVM). This server runs an Oracle 10g instance, async I/O enabled to a NetApp filer where most data is stored. Traceback of latest failure follows (two crashes this morning). Anyone read these things well enough to tell me if there's any insight in this? Command line IMAP client

Hi I want to download all messages from an IMAP mailbox but i want this to be outputted into MailDir format. I tried using fetchmail but this outputted the mailbox into mbox format. Is there an IMAP client that works on the command line but will output into MailDir format or failing that how reliable is converting from mbox to MailDir ? thanks

bootup error - undefined symbol: lvm_snprintf after yum update

This is an x86_64 system that I just updated from 4.2 to 4.3 (including the csgfs stuff). When I watch the bootup on the console, I see an error: lvm.static: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/liblvm2clusterlock.so: undefined symbol: lvm_snprintf This error comes immediately after the "Activating VGs" line, so it appears to be triggered by the vgchange command in the clvmd startup file. I have another, identically configured, server which I have not updated yet. This server does not give this error. Everything seems to be working fine, so is this something I need to worry about? -- Bowie

crond not starting on reboot since U7

Hi, Just updated a few servers to U7, and rebooted them. I found out that crond would not start at boot even if it is configured to: crond 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off I have tested another reboot, same thing: I had to start crond manually. I don't see anything in the logs, and I don't have direct access to the console right now. Anyone seen the same thing?

Guys, I'm migrating an internal Mediawiki over to a new CentOS 4 system. The old server's running FC3 and has a tarball install, ideally I want to stick to properly packaged software as far as possible. Multiple ISPs

I have a situation where I need, what I'll call, a high availability router to provide fail over between a cable service, and adsl service, from 2 separate ISPs. There is no requirement for outside access just high uptime requirements for internet access from the lan to the internet. At present I'm looking at just running a perl, or shell, script to ping the gateway and then fail over to the opposite interface, and vice-versa. Anybody know of a better way to do this, or have any experience with a similar situation? Thanks, Neil Jolly

Postgrey and Centos 4.2

Hi, We have implemented postgrey (postgrey-1.24, compiled from source package) on a centos 4.3 server. It works except for the whitelistings, in file postgrey_whitelist_clients, no matter what domain we enter, their incoming mails gets greylisted. I have posted this question to postgrey list but have not received anything yet. I works OK on a centos 4.1 server. Has anyone experienced similar problems? Regards, Francois

Thanks for the help guys. To resize my screen I had to go through the GUI part and change it but unlike Microsoft it makes me reboot in order for it to take affect which sucks. The Ctrl Alt +/- does not work. As for adding a printer someone finally gave me the link to the correct document which showed how to do it. I received a link where you can download the CentOS manual in PDF format: http://www.centos.org/docs/4/pdf/ but the guy didn't tell me which manual I'm suppose to download. I cant tell what's what by the name so unless someone here can point me in the right directions I'm still waiting on their response.

SMP kernel on old Asus CUV4X-DLS motherboard

Just wondering if anybody managed to get SMP kernel to boot properly on an old Asus CUV4X-DLS motherboard (older dual P-III)? I had this problem only with this specific motherboard and 2.6 kernels. First time couple of years ago. And again today (I've just installed CentOS4 on a box that used to run RH7.3). Previously those machines were running Red Hat 7.3 (2.4 kernels), and with 2.4 SMP kernel all worked fine. The issue I'm having is that when device driver modules are loaded from initrd's init script, insmod doesn't wait until each driver it loads is completely loaded and initialized. It just exits with right away and init script goes on and starts loading next device driver. It looks like bang, system loads all of them in parallel. Of course, this doesn't work really well. Before RAID and SCSI drivers have time to scan the bus and detect disk drives, vgscan is already done, and of course it doesn't find any volume groups, since previous device drivers haven't yet detected any drives. All I can see on console is interleaved messages from various device drivers intializing with messages from LVM, followed by kernel panic because it couldn't mount root file system. All completely out of order. The output on console looks something like this: Loading scsi_mod.ko module Loading sd_mod.ko module Loading 3w-xxxx.ko module Loading scsi_transport_spi.ko module Loading sym53c8xx.ko module Loading dm-mod.ko module Loading jbd.ko module Loading ext3.ko module Loading dm-mirror.ko module Loading dm-zero.ko module Loading dm-snapshot.ko module Here goes output from loaded modules, in no particular order, all totally mixed up, couple of lines from 3w-xxxx, then couple of lines from sym53c8xx, then couple of lines from 3w-xxxx again and so on... By the time vgscan is run, even the jbd and ext3 modules are not yet completely loaded in kernel. If I boot single processor kernel, all is fine. Device drivers are loaded one by one, insmod waits for device driver to initialize properly. Just as it should be. The output on console looks like: Loading scsi_mod.ko module Loading sd_mod.ko module Loading 3w-xxxx.ko module Otuput of 3w-xxxx detecting RAID volumes Loading scsi_transport_spi.ko module Loading sym53c8xx.ko module Output of sym53c8xx detecting SCSI devices Loading dm-mod.ko module Loading jbd.ko module Loading ext3.ko module Loading dm-mirror.ko module Loading dm-zero.ko module Loading dm-snapshot.ko module The workaround I have to get system to boot using SMP kernel is to modify init script from initrd, and insert bunch of sleeps after each insmod to give device driver ehough time to initialize before next device driver (wich might depend on one or more previous device drivers) is loaded. This kind of works, but it's just an ugly hack to hide underlying problem. Of course, there is also this nasty feeling that something inside kernel doesn't really work well and that other things might break or that data might get corrupted. When I was Googling around, I also found suggestion to turn off MPS 1.4 in BIOS, but it made no difference in my case. Of course, turning ACPI off can't be done on SMP kernel (and system works fine with ACPI using single-processor kernel). I'm still not sure if this is problem with kernel (things worked fine with 2.4 SMP kernels), or some strange bug in (new) insmod executable that surfaces only when using this particular motherboard. Anyhow, to conclude this lenghty email... Any success/failure story with running 2.6 SMP kernel based distro (particuallary CentOS4) on this motherboard is more than welcome. -- See Ya' later, alligator! http://www.8-P.ca/

I updated my i386 systems without any problems, but when I tried to update one of my x86_64 systems, I got an error from yum. Transaction Check Error: file /usr/include/libdevmapper.h from install of device-mapper-1.02.02-3.0.RHEL4 conflicts with file from package device-mapper-1.01.04-1.0.RHEL4 So it can't install the newer package because it conflicts with the older package??? Ive downloaded the sparc 4.2(beta) iso images but cant seem to find the tftp boot files I need to kick the process off. SATA Raid 5 and losing a drive

Hi Folks - Using CentOS on a server destined to have a dozen SATA drives in it. The server is fine, raid 5 is set up on groups of 4 SATA drives. Today we decide to disconnect one SATA drive to simulate a failure. The box trucked on fine... a little too fine. We waited some minutes but no problem was visible in /proc/mdstat or in /var/log/messages or on the console. I ran mdadm --monitor /dev/md0 and no problem was shown. We rebooted still without the drive and finally mdadm --monitor reported that the array was running in a degraded state. We reconnected the SATA drive and still nothing was reported and nothing happened with the raid state according to /proc/mdstat. I expected the box to keep on trucking but to become freaked out with warnings all over the shop. What should I have expected in this case and what should I do to become aware of evil events like the drive melting remotely? -Andy

Postfix on VLANs

Hi All, I'm having some problems getting postfix to relay mail. I'd appreciate any tips. Perhaps there are some settings which I may have missed, somewhere. The postfix mail server is on VLAN 250 (192.168.250.0) whilst I have several other users on other VLANs (e.g. 91, 92, 93, etc... 192.168.91.0, 192.168.92.0, 192.168.93.0, etc...). So, if I had a PC sitting on VLAN 91 with IP 192.168.91.1, I am unable to relay mail BUT checking mail via POP3 works fine. In /etc/postfix/main.cf, I have set the following:- mynetworks_style = subnet mynetworks = 168.168.91.0/28, 127.0.0.0/8 Do you know what setting I may be missing? Thanks. Best Regards, Andrew

Issues with aacraid

Hi there, I'm currently trying to install a server with Centos 4.3 x86_64. I have issues installing drivers from a Driver disk, I got a driver(2810SA) from the Adaptec site, I started it up with "linux dd" It reads the disk fine .... I can see the aacraid module in the list but as soon as I choose it. Then I get a screen saying "Do you wish to load more Driver Disks?" I can see in the logging that it can't find the driver it also gives a "Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev fd0". I have dd'ed the image ... it is a ext2 Filesystem and used RAWRITE. gtkmm-2.4 for Eiciel?

Hi everyone, I'd like a nice frontend to setfacl and getfacl. I'm getting lost with those ACL commands. I've found Eiciel which is a nice gnome frontend to setup ACLs. The problem is it need gtkmm-2.4, and centos seems to have gtkmm-2.0 only. Is there a safe way to upgrade? Do you have a repo to suggest? Or anyone knows of another graphical ACL editor with more conservative dependancies. Thanks Yanik

yum repository conflict resolutions

Hello, I'm setting up a test mailserver on centos4. I want to use stable rpm packages but ones that don't have conflicting lib requirements. I've got the standard yum configuration with one excdeption i've enabled the centosplus yum repository. I've read that dag's repository has a package i'm going to need courier so i figured to set that up. Here's my problem, if i then do a yum update on this box and more than one repository has a package say kernel which does it get? Or, if a package has a library dependency and that is installed and it conflicts with another, how would this be resolved? Sorry about the confusion any help appreciated. I'm also going to possibly have a need to roll out custom-made rpms not sure yet on that one, and it's been a while since i did them, rh7 i think was the last time. Does anyone have a Centos-specific howto on this not for modifying an existing srpm, but for creating an rpm from tarball? Thanks. Dave.

redirecting some addresses with sendmail

I have a fully working cyrus+sendmail mail server hosting all users for foo.com. Company foo has been acquired by company bar and it has been decided that bar.com is the new domain of choice. The administrator of bar.com has added a pile of redirects to send various user(a)bar.com addresses so they come up to my server at foo.com. My users have changed their From: addresses to user(a)bar.com and we have a basic working system. However, if one user in former company foo mails another user in the same office their mail now goes offsite to bar.com's mail server and is then redirected back in again, which works but is bad for bandwidth. Ideally I'd like to teach sendmail that a subset of bar.com users are now local. However if I try this in the /etc/aliases file, I get the warning "cannot alias non-local names". Has anyone got any better ideas how to do this- or a better suggestion as to where I should ask this question again? -- Cheers, Tony

question about mouse and kvm switch

Greetings all: I have a CentOS 3.6 and 4.3 box sharing a kvm switch. Switching from the 4.3 box to the 3.6 and back again, the mouse stops responding. The keyboard works just fine, and I can ssh into the box. I have tried <ctl><alt><bksp> and while it does restart the x server, it doesn't seem to affect the mouse. Best Partitioning Tool?

Hi All, which is the best tool for partitioning, as I forgot to bring in my copy of PartitionMagic(DOH!!) and need to resize an NTFS partition today. I'm using XP Pro at the moment. I wish to resize a 38GB partition, primary, to 20GB and use the rest for a Linux Install(CentOS 4-3). Cheers. Mark Sargent. P.S. I'm putting together a spec for a big(ger) memory x86_64 host, and I hope some of you-all can help. I'm looking for success stories of hardware that folks are using in production environments, preferably with CentOS 4, with more than 4GB of memory per CPU. I know there are lots of mobos out there that can do this, but I'm looking for what folks really have running. Call me paranoid. The target is SATA + n*GigE + 1CPU + 8GB memory, and I can consider other configurations. The incumbent system is a Xeon 8GB system running i686 CentOS 4.3 (what else?), with light CPU loading and very heavy IO loading (WD raptors are our friends). Folks with deep(er) knowledge of x86_64 architecture, I'd also be interested in the trade offs between 1CPU w/8GB and 2CPUs each with 4GB. (E.g. what's the real cost of shipping data back and forth between the memory spaces of the two CPUs? How does the 2.6 kernel deal with the split memory space? etc...) The memory is all going to be used up in kernel buffers keeping bits of files in kernel memory. Also, trade offs between Opteron and Xeon architectures, i686 vs. x86_64, bounce buffers, etc., for an application like this would be helpful. The application is enhancement to a mirror server (mirror.cs.wisc.edu) here at UW-Madison. Many thanks to all in advance. Private or public replies welcome. Dave Thompson UW-Madison

P3Scan support

Hello, I want to ask if CentOS will support P3Scan (http://p3scan.sourceforge.net/) as RPM delivered with the distribution? For explanation: P3Scan is an transparent mailproxy. It uses ClamAV and SpamAssassin to distinguish between Spam- Virus- and normal Mail. Its more usefull to get an update via the repos instead of compiling it by myself. Network and default route

I have had this problem on and off since RedHat 6, and I always worked through it, but I thought I would ask. When you have multiple network interfaces, how does the system determine the default route? Or is it the first, (or last) interface that comes up? On the problem systems I have to add a "route add default..." statement in some systems in the rc.local to get them to work right. -- MailScanner is like deodorant... You hope everybody uses it, and you notice quickly if they don't!!!!

rsync and users

Thanks to the encouragement of some people on this list, I am using rsync to synchronize two servers: one is a backup to the other in case the primary one fails. By hand, I inserted the names of the users on the primary server into the backup server. So, now all works well. /usr/bin/rsync -av -e ssh /home/ 192.168.0.22:/home/ My question is what would happen if the users were not on the backup server? Kernel downgrade?

Hi list! I've been bitten by a bug in the latest kernel 2.6.9-34.EL and I already removed the old kernel. Are old kernels retained at any place? I need to go back to 2.6.9-22.02 but where can I find it? In the Centos 4.3 directory I find only the latest kernel, not the older ones? Thanks!!

Jazz drive

Hi We setup a server the other day for a client, and it has a 35gig jazz drive in it. Centos 4.2 recognizes it as a cd disk. How would I go abouts getting it to read and write to it? When I click on the cd-rom disc icon it loads up cd/dvd creator. Shouldn't it just recognize it as an external drive? Thanks

First SSH now VSFTP

Seems the script kiddies are now hitting vsftp with dictionary attacks. I had three boxes showing around 12000 attempts from one IP yesterday. My thoughts are that there should be an upstream solution for this which is then supported by the upstream vendor. Yes, I know there are several 'other' solutions, but I'd really like to stay mainstream and use a supported method for dealing with these issues. I can't help but view them as security issues. CentOS 4 and multi TB storage solutions

Hi, I am currently searching for storage solutions to use in an environment with two CentOS servers. Both are web/MySQL servers hosting several web applications that forward HTTP requests for files to storage servers (all with 3ware cards offering RAID5 arrays) that collectively serve 10TB of images. The data grows by 2TB every year. This has been working so far but this current implementation is facing growing pains so I'm looking at more scalable options. Something that will offer 12TB of storage and room to grow by adding more storage as needed. Currently the Apple Xserve RAID 7TB offerings connected to a QLogic SANbox 5200 fibre switch looks very appealing. Especially considering the Xserve RAIDs are listed in Red Hat's RHEL HCL and Google searches have revealed successful RHEL & Xserve implementations . But since this is still preliminary research having more options for comparison would be nice. Warm reboot failure

I recently bought a new Compaq Presario sr1710nx with 64-bit Sempron and last week installed Centos 4.3 64-bit on it. Worked like a champ until I attempted a reboot (using "init 6") and the computer hung after finishing the shutdown. Rebooting from cold worked, but without a warm reboot I was hesitant to use Centos. Since FC5 (64-bit as well) came out recently, I tried it and warm reboots work great. So it would seem that it is a kernel/driver issue, but I have no idea where to begin. Also I'm not if additional grub boot parameters might help. I won't be in front of the machine until this weekend, but since everyone else will be gone by them, I'd thought I'd ask you guys if you had any ideas. I really would like to get back the package stability of Centos. Fedora 5's updates are driving me nuts (too many, too often and too major). Any suggestions? (I'm going to try 32-bit Centos this weekend first) Thanks ahead of time, Tarun

Several problems upgrading CentOS 4.1 to 4.3

I had a CentOS 4.1 installation (LVM over RAID1), and tried to do an update to the 4.3 release. Nothing too fancy, I did all the partitions with the graphical installer for the 4.1 Version. First, the installer did not find the previos installation, then I tried with the "upgradeany" option to the kernel, and from there the update ran apparently with no problem. When the boot loader section came, the setup was not able to find the previous working grub configuration, and the "update boot loader" option was disabled, so I marked the "new boot loader configuration" (don't remember the exact string. Then the installation process ended, and I did reboot. The "classic" "Error 15: File not found", from grub came. The description line was indeed, for the 2.6.9-34 (centos 4.3's relase), but I could not boot the system. I went into the "linux rescue" and from there, I started to find out some more weird stuff. First, the kernel package was not installed correctly, the files. /boot/* and /lib/modules/* weren't there, there was no entry on the rpm database, in fact the only probe that the kernel was "installed" was the grub entry. I tried to rebuild my old grub configuration, and boot with the previous kernel version I had. (The rescue disk, did not let me mount the cdrom, and I was without Internet to find out how to enable de /dev entry to acomplish the task). With the old kernel config, I could start my server, but I could not login from the console (tty*). Then I had to reboot in single mode, and from there perform the kernel installation from the 4.3's cdrom. /var/log/messages had this line for every login attempt: login [1234]: Module unknown. As this is a production server, I checked for all the services (ldap, samba, mysql, apache, etc.) and there where all working fine. I could log in from sshd without any problem (besides the bunch I'm writing here of course). Finally, when I checked on all the services and the console login problem, the rest was working as before. I went then to the "yum check-update", and found some "pam-*" update, so I did the corresponding "yum update". After pam's update, I could login again from the console, by the way "crond" tasks weren't working either, when console login was not working. That is not the end of this Crypt's Tale :( Now I have the system, running 4.3, yum does not report any update, but I have several duplicated rpm installed. :( I'm willing to try all this again, in a VMware, just to convince myself that I'm not crazy, and that ghosts does not exist :) upgrade.log has several lines like this: Upgrading kernel-2.6.9-34.EL.i686. error: %pre(kernel-2.6.9-34.EL.i686) scriptlet failed, exit status 255 error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping kernel-2.6.9-34.EL Upgrading kernel-smp-2.6.9-34.EL.i686. error: %pre(kernel-smp-2.6.9-34.EL.i686) scriptlet failed, exit status 255 error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping kernel-smp-2.6.9-34.EL where the pre-install script fail, but how come the installer did not reported any problem during installation? I'm not a newbie, I have quite a while working with linux, and I just want to aware people who are going to perform an update, skipping some version in between or perhaps moving to 4.3 to be very carefull in the process. Some quick mrtg help

Ok, I'm having a major brain hemorrhage or something. I just can't get mrtg setup on my box. I've done it before and it's not like it's brain surgery but there's a mental block or something that I just can't get around. All I want to do is have a nice, simple graph of the traffic on the box and the gateway in the standard day/week/month/year thing. I've got the mrtg rpm installed and it's all there. The docs in http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/docs/ do not reflect yum of today ie the yum plugins. Where can updated yum docs be found? By browsing lists such as fedora-devel, centos one can see how the plugins have "stumbled in" but newbies/anyone wanting to pickup on the new features has nothing to read. Hi Karanbir: I suggest it's better to have releasever=4.3 work for the new mirrorlist, since releasever=4.3 is working with baseurl, i.e baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4.3/os/i386/ It's better to be consistent that releasever=4.3 works with new mirrorlist, i.e. mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=4.3&arch=i386&repo=os Thanks. -- Steven

cheep laser printer recomendations

Hi! I would like to hear what printers go good w/our operating system. While back, I should have checked w/y'all like I'm doing now but I just went ahead and bought a Konica-Minolta PagePro 1350W. Now that W at the end of 1350 is a huge word that means WINDOWS! grrrr! It's a great printer 21pgs/min etc but it doesn't like linux at all and their tech spt will tell you as much. I googled round while back...there is some stuff there w/it and windows but I have had no luck. I got it sold for what I pd. 150 bucks and now I want something good that we know works really well w/linux.. Whatcha all think? thx John Rose

(sorry to keep top posting... outlook sucks). Johnny, The approach we took was to use the yum plugin protectbase since we have our own internal repository. I noticed when we protected the repository the plugin prints out "protected N RPMs" but does not print out what it protected (even with higher debugging). I thought it would be useful to have it print the package names/repos on protected RPMs. So, I patched the protect base plugin to do that. I would like to submit the patch. Would that patch go to you or somewhere else? BTW, thanks for your help on this. kernel panics on bootup

Is there a way to disable the auto reboot when the kernel panics during bootup? I tried passing "panic=0" using grub but it still reboots automatically. I need to at least pause it long enough to read the screen to determine the cause of the panic. Thanks for any help.

Clock applet crashes

First things first: Kernel 2.6.9-34.EL, CentOS 4.2, Clock Applet "Clock 2.8.1", calendar client is Evolution 2.0.2. The problem: when clicking on the clock applet to open the calendar page all is well. However, when clicking again to close the calendar page, the applet crashes; "The Application "clock-applet" has quit unexpectedly." Has anyone experienced this problem? It's not a critical problem, but can get annoying at times. I thought I'd play with making my system an ntp server. I did the "service ntpd start" it started OK. on my laptop I did "ntpdate IP" and it says no server for sync found. My firewall has open ntp:udp What did I miss? Thanks, Jerry

Johnny, I applied the patch (by hand since it would not apply cleanly) to 4.3's chkconfig and it appears to fix the issue I was having. Generally, what are the next steps with this type of situation ? Does centos patch and release or wait for redhat to patch and release? If we decide internally to patch chkconfig rpm ourselves what are the best practices to prevent over ride of a new chkconfig from you guys which may not have the patch applied? I am aware of the AniS java animation, but I think that is a little (lot) beyond my skill level to set up. Hi, We are using the heartbeat and drbd packages from latest centos (4.3) extras repository. Upon installation of both packages I noticed that if you "chkconfig heartbeat off" that will cause drbd to chkconfig'ed on. And visa versa. After doing some trouble shooting it turns out the "BEGIN INIT INFO" sections appear to be the cause. drbd has: ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: drbd # Required-Start: $network $syslog sshd # Required-Stop: # Default-Start: 3 5 # Default-Stop: 0 1 2 6 # Description: Control drbd resources. ### END INIT INFO heartbeat has: ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Description: heartbeat is a basic high-availability subsystem. # It will start services at initialization, and when machines go up # or down. This version will also perform IP address takeover using # gratuitous ARPs. KDE vs Gnome

I think im using Gnome but im not sure. As for using logout command it didn't work that's why I got puzzled and had to ask online since I couldn't find the GUI one which was there but apparently im too blind to see. Speaking of GUI side of things that's why I made the comment about no search features in CentOS. None of my menus offer a search feature in the GUI so I would have to research the command line search feature. I know its FIND but I couldn't figure out how to pull up the Help info on FIND to figure out how to use it. As for the HELP option in the GUI strangly it doesn't contain any information so I would assume it didn't get loaded in the Install. As for the Manuals like I stated before.I just got the valid link last night to the right manuals and I am in the process of printing them out. Im a newb to Linux and so far Linux has not been newb friendly even though the people are. Finding Newb Linux info isn't easy either that's why I been mainly using this mail list. I know I know everyone says to use Google and if I would of found it on Google I wouldn't of asked here. Hopefully as I learn Linux more I will know how to search for the information better to get the answers I am looking for. My next quest is to figure out how to tell if certain hardware drivers are loaded and if not how to download and load em. I been doing everything from basic install and when I noticed the NIC Card was working without having to do anything else I stopped there. Now that I have the manuals printed or will soon I will go through everything to see what there is to see. Thanks again.

Chances of 4.3+ version with latest kernel

All, I had a terrible time installing 4.2 on an ASUS NFORCE x86_64 motherboard. I did manage to get it working... Also the compaq V4000 laptop same issues. I thought I would try 4.3 and see if it was better... Seems to be the same really. All the "fixes" the kernel needs were not included in the 4.3 kernel. What are the changes of a 4.3+ version that runs a 2.6.16 kernel? I know this is not compatible to RH stuff but it sure would be sweet! The centos team is doing a great job. Again... just a thought. Acrobat Reader broken on CentOS 4.3

I have had Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0.1 installed on my CentOS 4.2 desktop and it worked fine. After upgrading to 4.3, I can't get it to come up anymore. I downloaded Acrobat Reader 7.0.5 and it does the same. MySQL 4.1 on CentOS 3

Have a situation where I am either going to have to update entire system to CentOS 4 (don't want to do that) or install MySQL 4 on CentOS 3 system. I can see rpm's for RHEL 3 on MySQL's web site. I didn't see any packages for MySQL 4 in dev.centos.org or centosplus so I would suspect that the MySQL site is where I should get them. Anybody recommend otherwise? Other than doing an dump of all the db's prior to installing, should I do anything else? Craig

w stopped working after upgrading procps

Hi I have just installed a lot of updates on a CentOS 4 box and w appears to have stopped working -- this machine has 3 or 4 people connected via ssh, yet this is all that is outputted: # w 20:46:32 up 301 days, 3:21, 0 users, load average: 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT "rpmverify procps" returns nothing so the package hasn't been messed with. I don't want to reboot the server -- does any have any suggestions what could be done to get w working again? For those who have the 3.0.21b or 3.0.21c, Samba 3.0.22 was released as a security update (about a week ago). (I just saw someone on the centos list with 3.0.21c so i thought I'd post this announcement for all others.) The downside to getting non-distro updates from upstream is that you are responsible for watching out for security releases. For those with the CentOS version (samba-3.0.10-1.4E.6) it already includes all available errata. Official Announcement from samba.org:- Security Release: Samba 3.0.22 Available for Download This is a security release of Samba. The Samba 3.0.21 release series (including the patch releases a through c) has been discovered to expose the clear text of the server's machine account credentials in the winbind log files when the log level is set to 5 or higher. Details can be found in the online release notes or in the original security announcement for CAN-2006-1059. The Samba 3.0.22 source code can be downloaded now. The GnuPG signature for the uncompressed tarball is also available. If you prefer to download just the diff from 3.0.21c to 3.0.22, the patch file (gpg signature) is also available. Precompiled packages for Fedora Core 4, RedHat 9, all SuSE Linux products, and Solaris are available in the Binary_Packages download area. CentOS 3.6 yum update signiture question

Greetings all - I just downloaded the 3.6 isos, and installed them. I had no problems on the install. Have followed all instructions, googled and read Johnny's November post, went to Duke (not physically, web-spherically, although it's only 45 minutes away),... and still can't see how I have protectbase operational.
