Offline yum update possible?

Is it possible to update a centos system that is NOT connected to the Internet at all? e.g. Centos 4.1 to 4.3? Can this be done with a 4.3 install CD, or by wget'ing some files, moving them to the machine on CD or DVD and then upgrading using yum locally?

have a strange isue. lphdisk and kickstart partitioning - laptop install

So I want the suspend to disk option. I have found lphdisk http://www.procyon.com/~pda/lphdisk/ It says to create a primary partition of type a0 How do I do this in kickstart? Will it let me do a type? part /??? --fstype a0 --size 1058 size is 1024 + 32 + 2 What do I put in for the mount point? Where do I go for help? I have exhausted google...

notebook build try 1 tonight

Well, I am not going to the IETF social tonight (even though it is the 20 anniversary party at a dude ranch outside of Dallas, and I have been here for 13 of those years). So it is the perfect time to shoot trying to do the build. We shall see.... So I will try and setup the suspend partition and then not format it. And see what I can load. Then check out the system. If it takes me a few tries, that's ok. It is supprising how hard it is to get information of putting Linux on notebooks....

HP DL140G2 and SATA woes

Posted a similar version of this to the RHEL4 list... I'm having trouble getting CentOS 4.2 installed on a DL140G2 with two SATA drives. I am doing a PXE install, so I do not have a CD-ROM drive in the system and this appears to have the side-effect that both SATA drives are caught by the Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver before ata_piix can catch it. As soon as I hook an IDE CD-ROM up to the system, the ata_piix driver somehow can get access to the SATA drives first and they use the SCSI subsystem and I get infinitely better performance. However, I have to disconnect one of the SATA drives to attach a CD-ROM drive (don't have a power splitter currently). Without the CD-ROM drive, dmesg shows the IDE driver assigning hda and hdc to my two SATA drives -- and later: ata_piix version 1.03 ata_piix: 0x1f0 IDE Port busy ata_piix: probe of 0000:00:1f.2 failed with error -16 Booting with noprobe doesn't appear to solve this problem. My current thought is to modify the modules.pci, etc stuff to have my PCI device id not match up with the IDE driver. Any other suggestions? I am looking at yumex on my toshiba, trying to create a kickstart for my hp..... What is profiles? Is it possible to build a list completely of install, ignoring the current install? Again, I am trying to help myself along with kickstart. And how do I tell what is just installed without having to be selected? So I do not see freeradius listed not in the update selection nor the install selection. A rpm -qa|grep radius shows freeradius installed on the toshiba. It would be 'neat' of kickstart config could take advantage of yumex....

Reliable Athlon 64 motherboards

Hi - We're looking for a reliable Athlon 64 motherboard. Hopefully this will support 4600+ (dual core) processors, SATA, and hopefully gigabit networking. Reliability is the key. We've tried using an MSI K8NGM2-FID, based on the nforce chipset. This works fine and the gigabit forcedeth appears reliable with the latest kernel update. However it oopses every few days for no apparent reason. We've also tried an Asus A8V-E SE (VIA chipset), but this appears terrible. The sky2 driver works (with the latest kernel update for 4.2, or the jwl test kernels), but then hangs after an hour or two of transferring data. We then tried a tg3 network card and an e1000, and this corrupts the data transferred between it and another computer. Maybe it is the SATA corrupting the data, but who knows. No obvious errors in the logs except for lost ticks. Tried non-SMP, 32 bit, noapic, acpi=off. No luck. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable board? Otherwise we have to buy Intel and get the speed loss... Request for good advice to upgrade kernel

Hi, first I want to thank maintainers of this excellent distro. I've had no problems, even I'm using quite new motherboard (Asus P5WD2) and dualcore Intel D 820 processor. I've updated all packages when You have announced them. At the moment the kernel is 2.6.9-34ELsmp and it works well. But I've lost some understanding how these kernel versions flow ! I'm also a little confused of some related answers from some forums and lists. Questions : - is the kernel version used in CentOS the same as in kernel.org ? - if the kernel versions don't match, where do I get information which mathes which ? The other question (very much relates to the later part of previous question and the need to do kernel compilation at all) : - if I want to compile new kernel using kernel source from kernel.org, what is the best way regarding to maintain the workability level of exisisting kenel (see top)? -- can I use .config-file from working 2.6.9-34ELsmp source and compile straight using that (first to see a working new kernel and then make some adjustments) ? In this way I can save a lot of time and frustration when setting the flags for compilation. Any other important to remember ? (I've compiled kernel since Linux 0.6 so no newbee recommendations. ;-) ) -- I need monitoring for many servers (thermal etc.) and of course they are remote. I would like to use OpenIPMI which seems to be the most modern method and thus would survive for some years (not expected of some other methods/applications) -- these issues are important to due I've more than 1 server and I'd like to use similar approach in each. Could You point me a) documents to wise upgrade of kernel in CentOS 4.x environment ? b) if there exists, example of use OpenIPMI ? High-Availability Clustering and drbd?

Does anyone here on this list have experience with HA clustering? I'm previewing drbd as a potential tool, and wanted to know if anyone here has experiemented with it at all... How stable is it? hpoj, file missing from 4.2 package

Besides printing, the HP OfficeJet T45 is also capable of scanning and is supported by the hpoj package and sane. I could not get this working however under Centos 4.2 (and this already once stopped working in the past after doing an upgrade on RedHat 8). Sane would not find the scanning device. I finally found that the one important library that is missing from the hpoj package (hpoj-0.91-9) is libsane-hpoj.so.1.0. I solved this by compiling hpoj from source, copying the file to /usr/lib/sane and creating two links in the same dir to it: libsane-hpoj.so and libsane-hpoj.so.1 .Not ideal but it works. I take it the file is also missing upstream ? Now kooka (also) scans perfectly. The one thing I now still have to solve is that printjobs stay in the queue while the hpoj service is running. I guess I have to define the printer differently because hpoj locks the parallel port. Currently it is using the hpijs driver. Installing additional perl modules

Hi all, What is the best way to install additional perl modules? Is there any yum repositories that I can pull the rpms from? I prefer not to use CPAN or compile the modules myself because that'll break the purpose of using enterprise Linux and risk the chances of breaking the dependancies. (I am not a Linux guru, I may be wrong here, sorry.) Also I am trying to figure out how to get dialup_admin working. I cannot find any reference to it, how to get it working within Apache and access it.... ls --author ?

I want a script to determine the owner of a particular file and then "sudo -u <thatuserid> <somecomand>". I ran across the --author option of ls but that does not seem to give me anything useful. It prints a short form of the filename without any other information at all. I was reading another thread, and this stuck out at me: "This issue was fixed by the CentOS team (and integrated into our install CD) prior to it's release by the upstream provider." As patches and such are released - are they integrated into the current CD's right away? So say for example, I downloaded the server CD a few months ago, then re-downloaded, would the patches from point a to point b already be integrated into the cd's? Thanks!

I think you are right about the selinux, I will test it later tonight because I have to go to co-lo cause I locked it up. To fix this do I need reload the OS? I know I enabled selinux during the install. Hi All, I am a new Centos user (old Red Hat and Debian user) and I'm having a very strange problem. I just installed Centos V4 and it appears to be running fine except for a weird issue. If I am on the systems console, I can write all kinds of files anywhere I choose. But if I am ssh'd in to the box it appears I can not write any files on the file systems. Since this box is across town, it makes it difficult to go to the console to make changes. Any guidance would be great. Thanks, Sean

installing yum on RHEL 7.2

im very new to RH, and even more so to YUM, but i need to install it on a RHEL 7.2 server, which i have done but installing the RPM package, and updated it via the Centos2 archives. The program i am trying to install is bacula, a backup/tape program on one of our old servers, we need to upgrade to a newer version. I didnt want to deal with the deps, so i thought yum was the way to go. well, it cant find bacula, and i even downloaded the rpm from their website, and tried to get yum to install it that way "yum install bacula.rpm" and that doesnt work either, i get a: # yum install bacula-mysql-1.38.5-4.101mdk.i586.rpm Gathering package information from servers Getting headers from: CentOS-2 base Getting headers from: CentOS-2 updates Finding updated packages Downloading needed headers Cannot find a package matching bacula-mysql-1.38.5-4.101mdk.i586.rpm can anyone shed some light on this for me? im kinda lost here. ive googled and found some good centos docs, but it doesnt solve my problem, the "localinstall" switch i guess is not supported anymore according to something i read on the net, and it doesnt work either when i try it. how can i get this installed with something that will handle the deps for me? am i even asking the right question? thanks for any help you can give. phpMyAdmin login problems

Hi! running 4.2 and the latest stable phpMyAdmin 2.8.0.1 of course all the lamp stuff is running. Alexander Dalloz helped me a good bit on the installation which I am truly gratefull. And then I brought it to a point where I can log on from local as any user and give it the anon's password and phpmyadmin will come up w/of course no privileges. I can log on as root from local w/the password and it will come up as root should w/all privileges. coming in from the web is a different story: if one tries to log on from the web to the following url and msg: The URL is this: http://rivers-bend.com/phpmyadmin/index.php The Browser page shows this: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /phpmyadmin/index.php on this server. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apache/2.0.52 (CentOS) Server at rivers-bend.com Port 80 ok this is 1 of 3 problems I can't seem to get a handle on. 2.Well, ...trying to go by the book...I have anon users all to the same password and root having it's own. I am having trouble having a user w/his own password to have special privileges, i.e. to have control over his own database. I have even tried to set it up in phpmyadmin as root through privileges but no dice. this same user can log on w/his user name and the anon password tho. 3rd and last problem: mysql: mind you I am still trying to get the passwords staight and I know next to nothing about mysql yet. but there is reference to "host" and in the mysql.user file ...well, you know how everything is spelled out in localhost and then in "host" in my case it's rbmain1.rivers-bend.com. What I am concerned about is that I run 2 servers mirroring each other and really makes no difference who's got the ball. the other server is rbmain2 but I am hoping this will take care of itself down the line. whew! Why does CentOS 3.X still use yum 2.0.8?

I understand that the CentOS packages track the upstream vendor's packages as closely as possible. In the case of yum, which as far as I'm aware is added by the CentOS team, I'm curious why it isn't upgraded to a newer version that uses the repomd format. "yum" operations on CentOS 4 seem to be significantly faster than those on CentOS 3. I recall a yum upgrade happening between CentOS 4.1 and 4.2, and I'm wondering if such an upgrade could happen on CentOS 3 as well... Thanks, Greg

I'm having a bit of trouble with the ntpd on my server. When I login and execute either ntpd or ntpq, and enter either a dmpeers or peers, it returns a message "Name or service not known". It has the same ntp configuration as the x86_64 machine here at home, which works as advertized. The daemon is running and I've even done a restart to make sure it's reading in the peers. Is there something I'm missing somehow that I get the no service or name error? FWIW, you can enter a host or peer, such as time.nist.gov or ntp1.twc.weather.com but after doing that, and then issuing the dmpeers command, it returns for hosts LOCAL(0) 127.0.0.1 and *HOPF_S(0) 127.0.0.1 both with all the offsets, delay, poll, etc... USB key problems on enterprise systems

Just came up with some interesting (read: frustrating) problems on RHEL3 and RHEL4 today at work, and I've confirmed one of the problems on my up-to-date CentOS4 system at home. I was forced into releasing some RHEL3 systems to replace our aging RH9 systems without time for adequate testing, and that leads to problems like these. On our legacy RH9 systems, mounting a USB key is no problem, but I can't get it to work on either RHEL3-U6 or RHEL4-U2 (= CentOS4). I'm curious if any CentOS3 or CentOS4 users have any suggestions. Here are the results from plugging in a USB Key and trying to mount it: 1. On RHEL3-U6, some systems get the following, and there is a workaround: Message: USB device not accepting new address Workaround: /sbin/modprobe -r ehci-hcd Message: READ CAPACITY failed ... Unable to read partition table Workareound: none that I am aware of. The above workaround has no effect. 3. RHEL4-U2 and CentOS4 get the following: No possibility to mount. As soon as you plug in the USB key, the system goes into a SCSI error loop until you unplug it. I've googled extensively for an answer, found a few hits for the RHEL3 problem, but no useful solutions. The RHEL4 problem is apparrently a 2.6 kernel bug. Doe anyone know of a packaged kernel solution for this? I'm using the CentOS unsupported kernel at home, but same problem as in the stock RHEL4 kernel. Have RH possibly fixed this in the U3 beta? In case you're wondering about the key(s), the mount works flawlessly including KDE automounting the key on my Kubuntu Dapper development system with kernel 2.6.15-16-386 #1 PREEMPT. kannel from dag - sqlite conflict with centos 4.2

I have a CentOS 4.1 box running Dag's Wieers kannel 1.4.0-3.2.el4.rf package which has a dependency on sqlite version 2.8.16-1.2.el4.rf also from Dag. If I try to up2date to centos 4.2 I'm hitting a conflict whereby 4.2 wants to install sqlite 3.2.2 - but kannel doesn't like that, reporting: Unresolvable chain of dependencies: kannel 1.4.0-3.2.el4.rf requires libsqlite.so.0 The new 3.2.2 version only provides libsqlite3.so.0. Anyone else seen this, or have any recommendations as to how I can have 4.2with kannel still installed? -- Cheers, Tony

libtiff-3.6.1-8 and HylaFAX 4.2.5

Hi, I am currently replacing my old Hylafax server to a new hardware with CentOS 4.2 (x86_64). Since CentOS 4.2 (and probably RHEL4) is shipping with libtiff-3.6.1-8, I'm wondering if this version of libtiff has the patch mentioned in the hylafax bugzilla http://bugs.hylafax.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=500 and/or is it compatible with the latest Hylafax 4.2.5 (i read libtiff-3.6.1 is mentioned in the release notes as having a fatal flaw). It will be against the main purpose of using an enterprise linux if I am to update this library myself. There are binary packages for RHEL3/4, not sure whether they are compiled with libtiff-3.6.1-8 too. The latter may not be necessary if you don't mind all the error messages in the logs. I'd also suggest turning off iptables until you settle on which ports you'll be using, then you can lock it back down. It works pretty well. I ended up going with QTSS running on a dual G5 since I had a spare one laying around and QTSS includes all the fancy management tools that are missing from DSS. multiple signed ssl certificatess on single IP address

Good afternoon everyone, This is my first post here. I was wondering if someone could clear my mind about this. I have a dedicated server with a single ip address assigned to it. I want to host couple of site which are hosted somewhere else and they have signed certificates. Now I want to host them all on this single server. Is it possible to bound more than one cert to a single IP based apache server and host multiple virtual directories? I did a research on line and found couple answers which are all confusing me. One suggested that I need to get additional ip's and assign different sites to it. (Not a very practical solution) Other one says we can use the same cert and ip but have secondary host on different port number than default. Something likes https://www.abc.com <https://www.abc.com/> and https://www.def.com:444 <https://www.def.com:444/> and so on. But this will cause people a warning regarding the certificate error on second path, is that correct? Some one suggested a wild card certificate but how can I do that since dedicated server name is a.dedicated.hostingcompany.com and I need to generate certificates covering *.abc.com and *.def.com Would someone kindly clear my mind on this issue?

Searching around on Google should reveal a wiki with more information about how to do this and remain compatible with the major web browsers (I think the link should also be in the CentOS list archives). It should be noted that solution (b) is impractical, many places allow https traffic only on the default https/443 port. Solution (a) is feasible and easy, however requires extra public IPs and will likely increase hosting costs. Solution (c) is the cheapest, however I've yet to try implementing it. [Further note: it is possible to run https over http on port 80 with transparent upgrade, but most web browsers and proxies don't support this and as such this is also not a viable solution...] Cheers, MaZe. Mplayer

Looking for the mplayer, and a yum list mplayer returned this: Available Packages mplayer.i386 1.0-0.20.pre7.2.el4.rf dag Will this package work on the x86_64 architecture? Does it need anything else to be functional? The mplayer web page does list availability for the I386 system, and there are a whole bunch of I guess, add-ons, like skins, codecs, & fonts. I would like something simple to install for the few times I would use the player if my windows machine is down. Regards, Sam

Greetings, I have long read and followed this list. I have also spent a considerable time with our good friend Google. I am a long time Sendmail user, about 15 yrs now. I have recently been looking into the newer services and the Postfix setup seems to be a very nice one. I am migrating a mail server from 3.x to 4.x and was intending on trying out Postfix on the 4.x server. I have found /alot/ of HowTo's covering various Postfix implementations. I have tried a few of these to various stages, some completely, some partially. I have not however found one that would take a CentOS 4.x system from Sendmail to Postfix completely. I can get Postfix to work. I can get MySQL to work with in some cases Cyrus and Courier for the IMAP services. I can get some Virtual Domain working but not completely. I can't however get it to actually work all together. I have a bit of ignorance with Cyrus/Courier IMAP as I have previously just had a simple Squirrelmail to Sendmail with stock IMAP services and all my users previously were real UNIX accounts, which I am trying to not require now. Does anyone have a real HowTO that goes from a stock 4.x load to Postfix etc.? I have follow Hughes HOWTO but it also skips the Courier/Cyrus part. I have gotten it all working except it doesn't make any MailDirs so then Squirrelmail freaks with Invalid Mailbox errors. It's quite frustrating to me because most of the HowTO's skip steps, like getting users into the SQL (which I have figured out a few times). It would be nice to have a real HOWTO that does /all/ the steps from stock to this configuration. If I have missed previously posted good HowTo's please point me to them and I apologize for the oversight. I have done many google/mailing list searches and they all seem to be 'almost' a how to. LVM Snapshots -broken ? Ever worked ?

I've upgraded my x86_64 4.2 box to the latest kernel 2.6.9.34 and tried an lvm snapshot. It worked fine and I was able to mount the snapshot etc. Now I cannot seem to remove the snapshot. If I try a 'lvremove' it asks if I want to remove the 'active' snapshot, if I say yes it just hangs and the box goes to 99% wait io, however the disk lights do not come on during this. The lvremove process is not straceable so I've got no idea whats going on with it. Luckily I chose to snapshot /tmp so it is not a show stopper. What I did to get around it was to comment out my tmp lv from fstab and just allow /tmp to be part of the root filesystem on the root lv. I deliberately filled up the snapshot so that it was marked inactive but it still thinks it is active when I run the lvremove command again. I also tried to lvremove the tmp lv, not the snapshot, and it said it couldnt remove the lv while there was a snapshot. I found a thread on the forums where Karanbir Singh states that this sort of thing was broken in early 4 series but may work in 4.3. Does anyone know how I can clean this up ? Cheers, Bards.

Groups and rpms

yum grouplist is almost ok for learning what groups are available.Though it does not distinguish between base/manditory and added in the installed list. But yum list is not really helpful. I would like to see something of what rpms are within what group. then what rpms are not in any group. And which groups and stand-a-lone rpms are base. maybe it can be teased out of comp.xml...

Hi All, I am using CentOs 4.2 . I need to change the kernel rpm . I downloaded the kernel-2.6.9.EL .src.rpm. after installing this rpm i changed the linux-2.6.9.tar.gz . Bu changing the source i made the rpm. But gives the error . Is it anyother file also required?? . Can anyone knows how i can do this ?

X broken after up2date

Hello, I've installed Centos 4.2 X86_64 on a PE2800 box with a Radeon 700 card and a generic Dell monitor. After running up2date before putting this box in production and make a reboot I can't get into X anymore, my monitor shows a message "out of sync" and that's it. So I tried logging in via ssh to run 'setup' and to use the X setup program, but it doesn't want to start. So I changed /etc/inittab to 3 insead of 5 and rebooted again. Now running setup from the box itself still doesn't seem to work quite well. I only get the message probing and that's about it. The videcard or monitor are still working flawlessy because using a live CD with X isn't a problem. Any ideas what went wrong? Because I'm thinking of reinstalling but don't want to run into this same problem again.. kind regards, Geert

getrichquick crazy user's email habits

greetings i have a lady that likes the getrichquick stuff and has subscribed to just about every possible spammers mail queue in the known universe. right now she has 2290 emails in her mailbox and i cannot view them in squirrelmail to dust em i dont want to dust her email just yet.... i want to learn from this situation how to better admin for a single user as well as the entire system including other domains etc. i need some advise and, of course, i dont mind reading docs etc ummmm what docs and files should i be concerned about in regards to *her only* so that anything that has a rating of above 3.8 addressed to *her* gets deleted and what should i be looking for in squirrelmail or imap that allows me to up the amount of emails that one can view via squirrelmail ive been searching for "squirrelmail limits" and other things like that to no avail so far. i have the php stuff set correctly and bumped it up for attachments and all that yet im still not finding the other limits i need to address. should i be looking in imap? php? or squirrelmail? or? thanks in advance. - rh -- Robert Hanson - Abba Communications Computer & Internet Services (509) 624-7159 - www.abbacomm.net

I did not see an answer in later digests yet ] FYI, you can use the '-d ata' option to smartctl to talk to your SATA devices with the -34 kernel. I've been doing this with a 2.6.15.4 kernel, but back-reved to 2.6.9-34 to test this and was successful. So if you edit your /etc/smartd.conf, you can have a line like: /dev/sda -d ata -H -m root(a)localhost.localdomain and you interactively do: smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda Regards, Ken Key

Eggcups printer icon not showing up in panel

I did a "side grade" on a client's machine freom FC2 to Centos4.2. I am not seeing the eggcups printer icon appear when the user sends a print job. One problem was that I had to copy /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession.rpmnew into place so that the DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS variable got set correctly. The messagebus service is running, as well as hal. There is a notification area in the panel. I can manually start eggcups and not get an error. (It returns 0). But it immediately exits, and no printer icon. Am I missing something? I'm not particularly familiar with eggcups and its required configs. Thanks for any help, Steve Bergman

ATI X300 on CentOS 4

Hello Everyone, I'm running the x86_64 bit version of CentOS 4 on a dual AMD Opteron server. The graphics card is an ATI Radeon X300. At the moment, Xorg is configured to use the open source driver, radeon. The server itself is connected to a KVM switch, which has otherwise not caused any issues. Recently, the virtual terminals have started to go blank and then not come back. What I mean by that is that the VTs from 1 to 7 do not display anything (the server is typically running in run level 5). I thought perhaps DPMS was on, but no amount of typing on the keyboard brings them back. I then considered it was related to the vga=791 parameter I was passing to the kernel - there were many mtrr errors reported in /var/log/messages. However, removing that parameter hasn't fixed the problem. Restarting GDM or changing the server's run levels doesn't work either. Only a reboot resolves the issue. (Hmmm...now that I think about it, removing the radeon module and adding it again might be equivalent to the reboot). There's nothing in /var/log/messages or in the xorg log file to indicate a problem. All the tty processes are running normally. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this before. If so, is switching to the proprietary driver the only option? Is there anything else I can look at? I'm suspecting it's a driver issue, and so will shortly try the proprietary driver from ATI. Mixing FTP and HTTP file transfers

How do I deal with this? A content management system which writes to a user's directory as user apache. A customer that wants to be able to FTP through a FTP client and vsftpd those same files up and down, which is presently set to work with only their username. I don't want everything set 777 or even 707. Is there a way to allow a particular user to download and upload files owned by apache, and I would assume, when uploading, those files will need to be chown apache so the CMS can access and update them? I'm looking for a best solution which is not going to be troublesome in the future and which is not going to have adverse effects on security. Thanks, John Hinton

I downloaded the Centos-SPARC cd's via bittorrent but when try to install i got the next message: Can't open boot device I thought it was a problem with the Sun MicroSystem NETRA T1. Then i tried to install other OS and it worked O.K. So i downloaded the isos in other PC and burned them at 4X but i got the same problem. web & printer servers

Hi list, I have a Centos server (192.168.1.10) and HP printer (LaserJet 4250dtn) with IP 192.168.1.20. HP printer is connecting to my server via Ethernet and I can print ok. What I want to do now is trying to tie HP printer to my server, so when I type http://192.168.1.10/printers/, I'll see my HP printer and be able to connect to it, then print. Has anyone got this to work? Please help!!! I google and found nothing that can help me accomplish this task. Thank you so much for your helps. JC

strange network problem

RFI: recommendation for temperature monitoring

Good morning gurus, I would like to get recommendation for monitoring temperature for cpu using Asus P5WD2 motherboard and Intel D 820. I my installation has CPU cooling system changed from Intel bulk to Zalman CNPS9500 and it works. Normal Intel cooling system is not enough and is overheating cpu quite badly. Unfortunately Zalman has to be controlled (rpms) manually and thus I would like to see the temperature. Which program is doing well this task ? Regards, Kari

/dev/console not getting created...

Hi All, I've been trying to put together a one off CentOS 4 based distro, and I ran into some trouble. First off just so you know we've been doing this with CentOS 3 and with RedHat 9 before that, so the inexperience is only with the delta between CentOS 3 and CentOS 4 (and RHEL 3 and RHEL 4 by extension). Anyway, the problem is that for some reason /dev/console is not getting created. We get completely through the installation, in what looks like a successful manner, but when we reboot at the point init would come up with see nothing at all, and there it sits. I went through many contortions including including using bash as init and then starting init manually with strace turned on. This all lead to the conclusion that for some reason init was not getting a console. I happened to look in the dev directory between a normal minimal install of CentOS 4 and our "minimal install" and noticed there was no /dev/console. I manually added this and now the system boots fine. For now I've added the creation of /dev/console to the end of the kickstart's %post, which works, but does anyone have any ideas why its not being created? Thanks...james

Missing Dependency problem while upgraing a pure (?) whitebox 4 install to Centos 4.2

Hi all I don't have the full Centos 4 CD distro, only the minimal server one (single CD). I use whitebox 4 for desktop installs and then change the necessary files whitebox-release, diskdumputils, yum etc. & change it to centos...never had a problem. This time however, I don't know why, but I chose the "Everything" option in the package selection dialog during install. Post installation, I changed the server to centos, by changing the appropriate files & installed postgreSQL 8.1 from local HDD using yum localinstall option...it installed perfectly. Then I gave a yum -y update command & went to sleep...& found the errors below in the morning. I agree that it is not a centos problem...but whitebox too is a RHEL derived OS and quite strict about remaining with the upstream. One doubt I have is that maybe I'm mistaken & the fresh install was not a fresh install after all (done in the middle of night with drooping eyes)...the earlier install on this system was centos 4.2 with centos extras & dag repo enabled and I may have chosen not to format the system & keep data or maybe the upgrade method. Can someone look at the files below & tell me these are from out of centos 4.2 repo and confirm the above doubt (another prob is that the rpm database should have been recreated on fresh install & there should be an upgrade log file in my root from anaconda...not there) Comments? Also, how do I downgrade packages using yum to get out of this dependency hell? Can I do it with one yum command or do I have to uninstall packages creating problems one by one? Sanjay. For the interested, I've been debugging a similar problem all day yesterday. In my case it's not a transparent proxy, but it's a proxy that for some awful reason doesn't seem to want to support byte-ranges. Python urlgrabber doesn't seem to handle asking for a byte range and getting back the whole file, so it chucks the whole rpm to disk where yum is expecting just the header. can't boot from install cd

We are migrating from Fermi Labs linux distro to the Centos 3.6 distro. So far all of the Dell's we have installed on have worked fine but we have two generic servers that are using Tyan Thunder K7X motherboards with built in Adaptec Ultra 160 SCSI using AIC7899 chipset. When we try to install on these systems the install cd seems to lockup loading the AIC7xxx driver. Adaptec says they do not support OEM embedded products and Tyan says that any embedded firmware is included in the bios upgrades which we have upgraded. We can migrate "online" by following the White-box to Centos migrate instructions and that works fine but it worries me that if I lost a hard drive in one of these systems I could not install Centos directly. Any suggestions for work arounds? Thanks Rich A.

Hiya all, am currently running centos 4 on a dual xeon (emt64). I get the following error.."error while loading shared libraries: libpam.so.0" from a dell info app. I'm guessing its because currently it wants the 32bit ver of pam? (As the file can be found fine in /lib64). Tried linking, but guessed that wouldn't work. Does it need a compat set of libs for it libpam.so.0, or is it ok to just yum install pam.i386 or is that going to break it, so was hoping for some gentle guidance as not so familiar with the 64 bit side yet :/. Printing problem

Hi. I've been running CentOS 4 since it was released (since 4.0). I did a fresh install and have kept it updated using up2date and yum so at present my system is running CentOS 4.2. I mostly use my system as a super-user and so I can mostly do everything without worrying too much about permissions. Not too long ago I created a "general" user account which is automatically logged in after a few seconds for others to have (limited) access to the system (default desktop is GNOME). Mostly everything works (ie. CD/DVD writing, sound, floppy access, etc.) But when it comes to printing, only a specific "lpr" at the command prompt (in a terminal) does the job. I was just wondering how (or indeed if) people use the %include directive in Kickstart configuration files when building systems via NFS. I've been trying to modularise our Kickstart files a little to make things more readable, having generic defaults and role specific stuff split out into separate configs. I've tried this configuration... If I include everything pre-%post (IYSWIM) in the main Kickstart file then everything works as expected up till the %post %includes when Anaconda complains it can't find blah.cfg, presumably because it's not local. I could live with the body of Kickstart config in the main file and then manually NFS mount and reference the modular configs, if I have to, but I wondered is there a better method? Hi all, i have a problem with centos's up2date tool. I have setup a central update server with yam (http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/yam/) under CentOS-4. Installing CentOS SPARC

Centosplus & CentOS Extras, Enlarge your tent

I think Jim (the other one) is doing a marvellous job with extras and plus but he needs to expand the size of his tent. A sensible package policy in extras/plus repo will mean fewer temptations to install 3rd party repo's that can break your system. Some of the packages i would like to see are :- - MySQL 5 rpms - php 5 rpms (already provided) - Open Office 2.0 rpms - webmin - rkhunter - chkrootkit - tripwire - Adobe, Realplayer & Java plugins (though licensing might be a hindrance) - wine from winehq __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? CentOS 3 and probably missing gd package

Hello In http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3/updates/SRPMS/ there is file gd-1.8.4-12.3.1.src.rpm but in http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3/updates/i386/RPMS/ there is no gd-1.8.4-12.3.1.i386.rpm as well as in all other architectures ... Is it OK ? Controller detection order

Hi, I have a dell poweredge 850 with centos 4, freshly installed. I'm now trying to add in a fibre -> sata raid enclosure with LSI HBA's in the 850. My problem is the enclosure gets detected first, hijacking sda and sdb from the internal SATA drive and causing kernel panic at boot time. I've tried changing the order in modprobe to the following: alias eth0 tg3 alias eth1 tg3 alias eth2 e1000 alias eth3 e1000 alias scsi_hostadapter ata_piix alias scsi_hostadapter1 mptbase alias scsi_hostadapter2 mptscsih alias usb-controller ehci-hcd alias usb-controller1 uhci-hcd previously ata_piix was below the other two. This hasn't made any difference though. Can anyone suggest any solutions? thanks Nick

SMART for SATA devices ?

I noticed that the changelog for the new kernel 2.6.9-34 on the redhat enterprise watchlist states on of the fixes as; 145061 - SMART support in SATA driver (P1) Does this mean that with that kernel we should be able to interrogate SATA drives now ? Cheers, Bards.

Dell TrueMobile 1400 Wireless card

Has anyone had any luck with getting the Dell TrueMobile 1400 A/B/G wireless card working under Linux? I have experimented with ndiswrapper, i have had nothing but problems trying to get it to work. CentOS4 on Dell Inspiron 9300

I just purchased a Dell Inpiron 9300 from the Dell Outlet store. Installing CentOS4 went very, very smoothly until I tried configuring X. The 17" screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio with a 1920x1200 resolution. The best I could manage using system-config-display was 1600x1200. So, after a bit of research, I hand editted the xorg.conf file (reproduced below) and it now works great. Maybe there was a simpler solution, but I didn't know one. Enlightenment would be welcome, but in the meantime, here's a solution that works. i've downloaded the new 2.6.9-34 kernel src rpm and keep getting signature issues or md5 issues if i tell rpm to ignore signatures. it seems that maybe the master copy is corrupted?

Darwin Streaming Server

Greetings CentOS Fans. I've downloaded the "Redhat 9" version of Darwin Streaming Server from Apple. The binary seems to load and run, but I can't get it to actually stream any files. Not a CentOS issue, but I am curious if anyone else is running Darwin Streaming Server on CentOS, and what they had to do to get it to work correctly. Apple's website seems to be all over the place, and the .pdf's I've found seem to be barely helpful. Thanks. Mike
