I have looked at the following: Konica/Minolta 2430DL HP 2600N Can anyone tell me how well they work and are supported by cups as a network laser printing solution? How Undo Yum Upgrade

I accidentally enabled a repo, so my automatic yum upgrade installed a bunch of stuff and possibly broke yum. Is it possible to reverse this? Follow is the yum log of what got installed. Hello Installing sw on a CentOS 4.2 (iso version) I notice that the kernel version is 2.6.9-22.0.1.Elsmp in RH4 UP2 the kernel version is 2.6.9-22.Elsmp Some sw complain and check the kernel version. file command returns incorrect MIME type?

Here's the problem: [ben@kepler tmp]# file -i presentation.ppt presentation.ppt: application/msword I see lots of references to this problem, (EG: IMP, PHP bug, etc) all of which conclude, in various forms, "the problem is in your /usr/share/magic.mime, go away". But nowhere (that I've been able to find) is there actually a solution - and even the magic.mime file from the latest tar (downloaded from astron.com) didn't fix it, either. The magic file in the apache directory seems to come up with the answer of: no answer. They use lookout for the client. This thing rocks. Shared calendar, public folders. All this stuff just works. I was able to integrate spamassassin and clamav with it also. The webmail access is really good too. They use tomcat5 for all the web stuff. All the administration is done via the java web interface. There is command line stuff I'm starting to scratch the surface on. I've installed community edition 9.4.2 and 10 on centos4. Good luck. Cheers, Tim

Problem with oracle&httpd...

Hi, I have CentOS 4.2 installed on my PC and I've successfully installed Oracle 10g along with apache web server(httpd) and perl-DBD-Oracle. The problem is trying to connect to oracle to oracle from a CGI script. I defined all of the environment variables(ORACLE_HOME, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PERL5LIB) in httpd.conf as well as apachectl scripts but I am getting the following error in the logs: ========================================= [Fri Mar 03 00:31:25 2006] [error] [client 192.168.251.6] Can't load '/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.5/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/DBD/Oracle/Oracle.so' for module DBD::Oracle: libclntsh.so.10.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory at /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.5/i386-linux-thread-multi/DynaLoader.pm line 230. ============================================ Also I disabled SELlinux, defined all of the above mentioned env variables in /etc/profile but now use. One weird thing is that as a standalone perl script I can connect to oracle but not through CGI. Can any one please suggest what's going wrong or what am I missing? thanks in advance, Siv

Filesystems, GRUB, weirdness, oh my! [long]

I am using SystemImager to auto-install about 500 different machines, some of them are CentOS; as you can Imagine I want to automate the installation of the bootloader; so I wrote a 2 scripts to accomplish this task. Why two? Because some of the machines are IDE, and some of them are SATA, and I need to be able to use the same disk image on both of the drive types. Here is the first bash script: if grep -q sda /proc/diskstats then TYPE="sda1" MOUNT1="/dev/sda1 /a/boot" MOUNT2="/dev/sda3 /a" else TYPE="hda1" MOUNT1="/dev/hda1 /a/boot" MOUNT2="/dev/hda3 /a" fi mount $MOUNT2 mount $MOUNT1 MOUNT3="proc /a/proc -t proc -o defaults" mount $MOUNT3 MKSYS="-p /a/sys" MOUNT4="sysfs /a/sys -t sysfs -o defaults" mkdir $MKSYS mount $MOUNT4 MOUNT5="/dev /a/dev -o bind" mount $MOUNT5 echo "mount $MOUNT2" echo "mount $MOUNT1" cp /sbin/grubinstall /a/sbin/grubinstall chmod 755 /a/sbin/grubinstall chmod +x /a/sbin/grubinstall chroot /a /sbin/grubinstall exit 0 What this does is determines whether the drive is SATA or IDE by looking at diskstats, if it is SATA, it mounts /dev/sda1 & /dev/sda3, if it is IDE, it mounts /dev/hda1 & /dev/hda3, it also creates and mounts all of the auxillary filesystems (proc, sys, dev) The next script which I run in the CentOS environment via chroot is: TYPE= SUBS= if grep -q sda /proc/diskstats then TYPE="sda1" SUBS="s/hda/sda/g" else TYPE="hda1" SUBS="s/sda/hda/g" fi grub-install --no-floppy --recheck /dev/$TYPE sed -i "$SUBS" /boot/grub/menu.lst echo "sed -i $SUBS /boot/grub/menu.lst" sed -i "$SUBS" /etc/fstab echo "sed -i $SUBS /etc/fstab" sed -i "$SUBS" /boot/grub/grub.conf echo "sed -i $SUBS /boot/grub/grub.conf" sed -i "$SUBS" /etc/grub.conf echo "sed -i $SUBS /etc/grub.conf" ls "ls -l /etc/grub.conf /boot/grub/grub.conf /boot/grub/menu.lst" exit 0 By the way /a is the ROOT of the hard drive (freshly imaged) and /a/boot is the boot partition of the hard drive (freshly imaged). This script again enumerates the type of hard disk attached to the system, installs grub on /dev/hda1 or /dev/sda1, modifies /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/grub.conf /etc/fstab /etc/grub.conf sda>hda hda>sda and so forth. Everything actually works fine; grub is installed; the files are all modified appropriately. The issue comes when the newly imaged system comes up. The first time the system boots up; grub is still configured to boot with root=/dev/sda3; even though NONE of the configuration files mention anything about /dev/sda3. However if I hit 'E' and modify the 'kernel ...' line in the grub editor from the bootloader, and allow it to boot up; the system boots up normally. The STRANGE part; is that after the first time it boots off of /dev/hda3; grub suddenly starts using that EVERY time the system boots; but I cant figure out why I have to first manually change it; and then reboot before it will work. Its almost like the CentOS boot process 'fixes' whatever is wrong with grub; the first time it boots after I run my crazy script on it; but I cant figure out what process during the boot is doing it; or what else I need to do to ensure trouble free auto-installation of CentOS, the reason I am asking you all is because that same script appears to work with a few other distributions. Any advice anyone can give me would be wonderful. Thanks, -Drew

Problem with large tar file.

I have just completed installing CentOS 4.2 (I came over here from Fedora-Land (core-3)). I did this via a fresh install. I tar'd everything to an external drive reinstalled the new stuff and everything is working very well. I've just got one issue. I have a full system backup Backup.tar that has a size of 78,717,880,320. When I issue the command tar -xvf Backup.tar I get only about 111MB of data restored. Basically /root and a couple other odd things of little consequence. I did have a second backup made with cp -pR <stuff> <dest> so I've still got my all my stuff from which I can selectivly restore as needed but I'm wondering why tar didn't work? (While being very glad I made two backups.) Is there a max size limit to a tar file? A bug in tar? Curiosity plagues me. Thanks for any help.

per port ip routing -- possible?

Hello, I have a customer who has two Internet connections, cable and DSL, where the cable is much faster than the DSL connection. Is it possible in CentOS 4.2 to use the "ip route" command to direct certain outbound traffic over the faster connection, say http(s) requests? Web searches turn up solutions where NAT is involved, but this guy isn't using NAT. Example configs that show how to load balance multiple connections and ensure symmetric routing all work great, but I don't an example of per-port routing. Any pointers or example commands would be greatly appreciated. Jack

Raid 1 problems

Hi, I have setup raid on a new server and have found that if I remove one drive it will boot but if I remove the other it says missing OS. I am using two 18.2Gig SCSI drives, using software raid 1. I have it setup with the following drives in this order. /boot swap / all are mirrored between the two drives. I remember a while back that their was a problem with grub would that be the problem here? Why does it work on one drive and not the other? Thanks Mace

There was only one dependency I missed in the Centos install and the Scalix installer took care of it.

Hey All, I read on the list here not to long ago a work around for the following error on CentOS for installing the scalix mail server... Error: unsupported OS release: CentOS release 4.2 (Final) on x86_64 Someone posted a fix where you could edit a file changing the name of the OS or something to fix this. I don't know if grub will boot from it or not. Load Average

Maybe somewhat of a vague question, but what would constitute a moderate and a heavy load as depicted by "top" on any particular machine? I am trying to justify running this machine with near 100% cpu utilization on both, with load averages between 5 and 5 according to top. I don't particularly see any significant slowdown in the running processes, but there is a chance the disk I/O might become an issue if too many things are going on at once. As for actual running processes, it varies between 5 and 9, depending on time of day. Memory is not really an issue, even tho usage tops out around 1.3 - 1.4Gb, and only a small usage =< 500k swap. X does seem to get pretty sluggish at those load levels, and I've thought about dumping back to a text console for most of the runtime, but I like my Xterms and monitoring applets. Sam

Does anybody happen to know if 'for sure' the order in which you list modrewrite rules is the order in which they are processed within a .htaccess file? It does work, but I want to know that it always works. Basically, I have some multiple wildcard rules, where directories can't be hard coded and as it goes deeper into the directories, the more shallow levels interfere with the deeper levels. Hi all, I'm setting up Centos4.2 on 2x80GB SATA drives. The partition scheme is like this: /boot = 300MB / = 9.2GB /home = 70GB swap = 500MB The RAID is RAID 1. md0 = 300MB = /boot md1 = 9.2GB = LVM md2 = 70GB = LVM md3 = 500MB = LVM Now, the confusing part is: 1. When creating VolGroup00, should I include all PV (md1, md2, md3)? Then create the LV. 2. When setting up RAID 1, should I make those separated partitions for /, /home, and swap? Or, should I just make one big RAID device? The future purpose of using LVM is I want to be able to expand any partitions that would run out of space into a new disk. Dmesg errors logged

Along with the discussion of system loading, I remembered something I wanted to add, but just remembered it. I noticed when I logged out, there was a brief flash of a text page (console I presume) that had some things I wanted to investigate further. Given it is a rather lengthly text file, and rather than clutter up the pages here, I stuffed it on my server so anyone wishing to look at it and comment can do so. The file is available at http://wa4phy.net/dmesg.txt Lots of segfaults I know which application they came from, but I don't quite understand about the keyboard errors and emulating rawmode for keycode 240. There also appears to be a few disk errors, both in buffer I/O and a few others I have no idea what they are. At any rate, would appreciate any comments, or if something needs a tweak, that too. Sam

Checking out yum localinstall before installing

I want to just see what will happen (ie success, or some dependencies still cannot be met) with: yum localinstall whatever.rpm I ASSuME (I have googled for this, but it is not clear) that localinstall will take the rpm, install it, and go to the yum repro to meet any outstanding dependencies. I just want to test this right now, not actually do it. I want to know what yum would install from the repro as well.

I did a minimal install and now I want to "download only" the programs needed as well a resolve-and-download the dependencies needed, all into a directory so I can install later. Hi, I need help installing Zimbra for multiple networks. I have gotten it to work just fine on a single network but we need our email server to stratle two different networks. eth0 -> internet side with local clients who can surf and email etc. (192......) eth1 -> private secure network that just needs access to send and receive email. (needs to be seperate and secure it connects to a Government network) (142....) I am using the latest version of Zimbra CE and running Centos 4.2. wired network switch to wireless if not active

All, I am wondering how one PC with a wired and wireless connection can have the wired IP active as long as there is a connection then if the wired connection goes away to then automatically, go wireless, then if wired comes back alive go back to wired. Is that kind of setup possible, if so how. This unit is always on - I just want whichever network is active and faster to be the active connection. The IP addresses for wired would 192.168.1.10 and wireless 192.168.1.20. GW is 192.168.1.1. Thanks, Jerry

Kickstart is my friend

I just had to change the install command to use ftp. I had to uncomment all of the drive partitioning commands. At first I was confused as to the partitioning failure, then figured out that the partitioning commands were commented out. Most likely to prevent an unwanted disk clearing. Only things: Did stop at the bootup to create a user id. Not a big deal in this case, as I was logging on as root to do a yum update. X was started to give me a progress of the install. So I will want to figure out how to get that in character mode next time. Just on general principles. The time to learn Kickstart was **LESS** than going through a manual install with the network, drive, and apps configuration steps.

Starting from the 4.2 Server install on x86_64 I did a "yum update", then "yum install openssl openssl-utils" and it appears to have installed an assortment of i386 programs and libs. How do I get rid of the wrong ones? Specifically, what I want is the right stuff to run the beta VMware server. thank you all for your help. Recently, ver 10 came out for scalix and it includes all the 'third party' pieces like JDK and Tomcat. So now I am reading up on kickstart to rebuild this system and start clean. I have copied all of my changed files (I hope!!) onto my notebook, and am doing the one mod i need for kickstart (original was a CD install, this time FTP). So I will know very shortly if this will all work! I see in the anaconda file the instructions for partitioning my hard drive, which is very good as I did not clearly write down what I did! Another fun filled day!

Updating my install directory

Maybe YAM is the 'only' way to do this, and if so, well then its got to wait a while.... Situation: Right now the only usable disk space to locate the install CD files for an FTP/HTTP install is a Win2000 server. Accessed via FTP/HTTP. So when I do an install from it, I then need to do a yum update and it takes quite some time. At some point in the next quarter, I will be stable with Centos and my install will move to a Centos server and I guess then I would use YAM. Is there something I can download from one of the mirrors to bring this directory fairly up to date?

LDAP authentication problems

I am working on a ldap base to authenticate user. My problem is binding to ldap with phpldapadmin or cpu. I can bind anonymously with phpldapadmin. ldapadd, ldapsearch etc. works. Users in the database can logon, so the authentication works, but I cant bind.... I need some input please, I cant find the missing link. A guy in one of the user forums on the net, had his Mambo 4.5.2 server hacked and they installed some interesting stuff in /tmp . vpopmail over NFS not seeing new messages.

Hi all. We've just migrated our back-end NFS mailstore from FC1 systems to CentOS4 and are experiencing problems/delays with vpopmail and user Maildirs. IMAP is fine, it's just POP access that causes us problems. Now, NFS mounts successfully, the clients can see /home/vpopmail and serve content as we would expect. IMAP works perfectly and sees new messages as soon as they're delivered into the Maildir, but POP doesn't seem to see new messages until about 90 minutes after it arrived. Messages can be seen in users' Maildir/new on the filesystem. The timestamps on new messages on the NFS filesystems don't appear to be formatted correctly, I'm guessing this could cause the POP weirdness? On an NFS client... [root@mailserv2 new]# ls -ltr total 4 -rw------- 1 vpopmail vchkpw 854 Feb 28 2006 1141126119.27119.mailserv1,S=773 Whereas on the NFS mailstore... CPAN module install problem

I could use some assistance getting CPAN functional again. CPAN stopped working on Centos 4.2 x64, and I can no longer install modules. I did a install Bundle::CPAN and upgraded to 1.8.2, and perl was updated afterwards via yum update. Telling software system really has 512Mb memory

I am stuck in my Scalix install. It checks for 512Mb memory. At some point I am suppose to get the extra memory, but for now I am stuck at 256Mb. Is there some system value that I can set so that the installer is led to believe there is 512Mb of memory, so I can at least get this stuff installed?

I got in over my head. jpackage was/is too much for me at this time. Maybe for a long time. Sorry for diverting your efforts to try and help me. I only want to run SCALIX CE on this system. It needs the jdk and tomcat. But if you look: http://www.scalix.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=516&highlight=centos A number have gotten it running just fine with the 'broken' sun stuff. Perhaps Scalix is not so 'demanding'. So I am following instructions from above URL. I did learn a lot here, making up for some of the implied steps in the instructions. Perhaps I will have to do a complete reinstall of Centos to get out of the jpackage mess I might be in. Well I REALLY should learn Kickstart, and perhaps I will do that for this system! Again you are all a great help. If you need some crypto help. 802.11i or such, that is where I 'live'. Well at least I help right the specs. Someelse has to code them! Barrs Law of Recursive futility If you're smart enough to use one of these.... .....you can probably manage without one!

Mouse hour glass and desktop

What does it mean when your mouse hour glass pointer turns into a skull and cross bones symbol for a few seconds and is then followed by your desktop icons being scrambled around to different locations. This reminds me of a bug in the old Windows 98 SE desktop. What would cause this? This has happened to me once before on Fedora 3 (I think, maybe 2).

Sendmail.cf / access.db

I've noticed from the sendmail logs, certain IP's are being blocked via the known spammers configuration in the sendmail.cf. What I also note is in my access file, I have several TLD's that are listed, yet are NOT being blocked. Yes, I do call a make after each edit of the access list, and going by the timestamp on access.db, it appears to being updated, yet again, in the sendmail portion of the daily logs, those TLD's which are in the access list are not listed as being blocked. Hope that is not too confusing.. think I confused myself, but in any case, things are in there that should be blocked and are not being. Hints? Sam

On older systems redhat 9 there was a command lsraid.... I have a centos 4.2 system that does not have that command. What is the new command that is equivalent to "lsraid -a /dev/md0"? Or is there a package that does not get loaded by default? Lsraid is not on my system. THanks, jerry

Hi List, I've run into a library problem I believe might be related to the portland group compiler, and / or the libs on CentOS. Essentially what is happening is the primary executable I'm trying to run is failing under mpi. Here's the output from the command (which would be the same as the script calling it) $ /usr/local/mpich/bin/mpirun -machinefile machines.LINUX -np 2 ./wrf.exe /home/sam/WRFV2/run/./wrf.exe: /usr/pgi/linux86-64/6.0/lib/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.3.3' not found (required by /lib64/tls/librt.so.1) Oddly enough, this same kernel environment works quite well with a previous version of the WRF code, but fails miserably with this update.. The compiler which bullt the old package built the new one too. The current package is still running by setting "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.2" which was suggested by Maze, back some months ago. I've tried different permutations of the LD kernel assumption, but all fail. One note tho, the wrf.exe file will work in single cpu mode *with* the kernel environment set to 2.4.2, and it also runs under mpi, albeit a private version in a user directory, but they are both identical builds. Is there any other work-arounds someone could point me to, or perhaps some documentation that might explain what the thing is doing? Not a lot of real good info that a non-programmer can understand in the mpich manpages, but still no mention of errors possible like this. Running in single CPU mode takes about 5 hours, where the dual CPU method, based on the old version of the code only takes a shade ovver 2.25 hours. Regards.... Sam

Regards trying to install vmware-server and the libs problem just read on the vmware tech site that i need to install the 32 bit libs the app to function i have then tried to do yum install xorg-x11- devel.i386 but this fails on a transaction error any way to get this working ? -Stephen

xen vs. vmware server

Can anyone offer informed comments on the relative merits of choosing xen over vmware server, or vice versa? The target OS would all be CentOS4.2 or later as they become available. Can anyone point me to a howto on downloading the rpm, building the source, patching the source, and building the new kernel rpm? Duplicating an install

I just completed YAI. The install was done via HTTP from an HTTP server (duh!). Is there some file I could copy into the directory structure (anaconda-ks.cfg) so that once I point the install to that server, it will do the second install just like the first?

Hello, I'm planning to install centos 4.2 x86_64 on a Poweredge 2800. This system comes with a EFI utility partition and has software called Server Assistant wich helps you to install your OS so that things like RAID and such can get monitored in an 'indepent' way afterwards through this EFI partition. When booting into the Server Assistant (the software is on a linux liveCD btw) I get the choice between a couple of supported OS's like MS server 2003, Novell or RHEL 3 or 4. So thinking that centos 4 is rhel 4 "without the artwork" I choose for the RHEL4 option and inject CD 1 from centos 4.2 ... but unfortunately I get the error wich asks me to insert the correct CD. Did anyone found a solution for this? I can always delete this EFI partition and install it the normal way but this feature looks nice to play with :-) kind regards, ivago

Caucho's resin on x86_64?

I'm trying to install the resin package from www.caucho.com on Centos 4.2/x86_64 with Sun jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-amd64. Everything appears to work during the install but I get: Socket JNI library is not available. Resin will still run but performance will be slower. To compile the Socket JNI library on Unix, use ./configure; make; make install. In the logs when it starts up. Did I miss something? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

can't mount any secondary drive partitions

Hi, I have just installed centos 4.2 on machine remotely and everything went well, a second drive was installed, I partitioned it, rebooted and then tried to mount it but keep getting the error mount: /dev/hde6 already mounted or /mnt/1 busy this happens with every partition on any secondary disk, we put a third disk in and get the same error. I have googled but not found anything relevant, most info relates to LVM or raid of which we have neither. any help greatly appreciated. tom

Proper way to give rights at the file system?

I have a certain directory under /usr that I want to make available through vsftp to a specific user. The easiest way to do this, I believe, is to create a symlink from the user's home directory to this directory. The catch is I want/need them to be able to delete/upload files as well. Root is the group and user owner of the files. What is the "proper" way to give rights for this user? Thanks, James

Was wondering if anyone can help with this, im trying to install vmware-server on a 64 bit centos 4.2 machine and then install is saying it can't find the libX11.so.6 lib and more The correct version of one or more libraries needed to run VMware Server may be missing. Hi, I have just installed the server cd 4.2 and was wondering what I would need to install to add xcfe4? I wanted to install a light weight desktop for playing around with. Do I have to install x11 and what packages would I install. I have added xcfe4 to Centos 4.2 after I had installed gnome and such. But not sure about with the server cd. Thanks

Ports require to do yum update?

I have a couple CentOS boxes running in our DMZ and although they are running behind a firewall, I'm also running iptables. One thing I cannot do it yum update. What ports are required for this? I have outbound http open and I can browse to sites using firefox. If I run an ethereal scan the process seems to stop with DNS queries, but I can resolve mirrorlist.centos.org without a problem. Anyone know what the problem could be? If I stop iptables everything works of course. Thanks, James
