ignorant daily logwatch question ;->

Yum updates vs current packages

Sorry if the subject is a bit vague. I wasn't sure how to summarize this. I am building a new server (CentOS4.2) and I am trying to stay with RPM installs as much as possible. The problem is with packages that I would like to keep more up to date than allowed by the repositories. This will be a mailserver doing spam and virus checking. As such, I want SpamAssassin and ClamAV to be as up-to-date as possible. The current rpm for ClamAV is 6 months and 3 releases behind. What is the best way to keep these packages up to date while avoiding dependency issues in yum? -- Bowie

Anyone running VMWARE server on CentOS?

Hi, I guess the subject says it all.. I am thinking about combining a few servers onto a single server since they mostly do nothing much at all which would mean there would be less load on the UPS and a lot less noise in my office.. Since VMWare server is now free its probably the perfect time to do it.. The only issue is getting the VMWare up and running.. I would prefer to run it on CentOS as the host OS but if it means recompiling half the system and not being able to use standard updates then it will probably just be a pain.. Has anyone set this up on CentOS yet and if so what did you have to do to get it running? Thanks

Centos on a Thumb drive

Can you boot from CD, point to an FTP server for OS, and install on the USB drive, eventhough the system has its own harddrive? Does the install have to be for a specific system? Of course right now, I only have one USB bootable laptop. Oh, and ecost is one of the best places to get things like SD memory. Watch their budget countdown...

problem in getting data through cacti from windows xp

hey friends, I am using cacti cacti-0.8.6-1.2 on Centos 4.0. I want to monitor my network through cacti, I have few windows and linux clients in my network. I have created a device or a host for Linux. I am able to get most of the information except Available Disk Space "Unix Available Disk Space". The client is Fedora Core 3 and the system on which cacti is running is Centos 4.0. Moreover I am not able to monitor the Windows XP Clients.The snmp is running on the Windows XP PRO SP2 but the cacti shows "SNMP Error" I am selecting Windows 2000/XP host and snmp version 1 with community string as "public". Hi, I use the program Unison to synchronize two servers and have been having a problem recently with errors saying mkdir failed. The program tries to make backup copies of any file it is going to overwrite before it actually does the sync. The backups have been failing because of the mkdir failure. To try and find the problem, I logged in as root and then tried the same command that unison was trying and it failed for me also. I can't seem to get mkdir to create more than one directory at a time which is a real problem for unison, because sometimes the file to be backed up is 5 or 6 directories deep. Does anyone know why this could happen? I am running CentOS 4.0 with all the available security updates applied. Thank You, Mike Elkevizth

ports appear as filtered to internal network

Im developing an online game. After upgrading from Fedora to Centos 4.2 I noticed I no longer can connect to the server when the client is running outside the Centos PC. Making an udp scan from my internal network with nmap revealed that the port used by game server application appears as "filtered". In my firewall script I have a rule to allow all trafic in the internal interface, so, I dont know why does the port appears as filtered. How can i solve this? -- Roger D. ncurses programs look messaed up

When using things like links, centericq, or ntsysv on my fedora core 2 box the fonts in ncurses based programs look fine, but on my centos4.2 box all the pipes and dashes end up looking like ââââââââââââââââââ Does anyone know how to fix this problem ?

OT Proftpd stopped authenication for users

For some reason proftpd stopped authentication for users. Anonymous access still works but when someone tries to access the server via their login it no longer authenticates them. I recently ran yum where proftpd was updated (that said, I'm not sure that caused the problem). I uninstalled the new version and and installed a prior version with no change. installing on HP DV5000 64 bit

Has anyone managed to install CentOS 4.2 on an HP dv5000 64 bit laptop? I boot from the install cd, and all of the options I have tried ( return, linux text, linux noprobe, linux lowres ) have had the same result: some text scrolls by really fast ( looks like the start of the install), then the screen goes blank with no activity of any kind. The processor is the turion 64, and it has ATI video. The odd thing is, I was actually able to boot knoppix 4.0 to repartition it for dual boot any ideas would be greatly appreciated. markus __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Serious desktop/mouse problem in Gnome

I have just gone through a java install. Don't know it that is the cause or just someother freeky thing. My mouse is in total run-away mode. Just touch it and it goes all over the place. Things start dropping and draging. The system bar is on the top now and the action bar on the side. If I manage to get a terminal window open and leave the mouse alone, I can type. Also <alt-cnlt-F1> gets me to display 1. If I go back to display 0, everything is still hosed. Any pointers? Some mouse file out of align and too sensitive? How I fix this and reset things? HELPPPPPPP

Last night the LVS box locked up and the following error was on the console apparently (this is a remote hosted box) - a hard reboot was the only solution dst cache overflow any ideas on how to solve this? the LVS box is also acting as the FW and is doing outbound NAT for the internal network thanks

Ok, I have been working (for quite a while) on an install guide for PostFix (with DoveCot, SquirrelMail, MailScanner, ClamAV) on CentOS-4. A full install is part 1 (Postfix / Dovecot / Cyrus-Sasl), Part 3 (SquirrelMail) and Part 4 (MailScanner, Spam Assassin, ClamAV). I am still working on Part 2 (Postfix / Cyrus-Imap / Cyrus-Sasl). It will go with Part 3 and Part 4 (same as above) to get a full install that includes Cyrus-Imapd instead of dovecot ... should be done with this one in the next couple days. So to reiterate, Part 1,3,4 is a full postfix/dovecot install ... it is done and ready to go. Parts 2,3,4 is a full postfix/cyrus-imapd install ... this one is not quite done yet. How does /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/ work?

I have two routers for different subnets and I'd like to set up different eth0 configurations depending on which one I have the network plugged into. However, it seems that every time I let system-config-network do its thing it forces all the eth0 configurations to be the same (hard-links them all to the one in the "default" profile). I'd also like to have virtual interfaces configured differently in different profiles -- as in, not configured at all in some profies -- so I tried creating e.g. ifcfg-eth0:1 in one of the profiles/ subdirectories, but not only is it ignored when using the network control tool to switch profiles, it also gets *deleted* from the profile if I run system-config-network. There's nothing about profiles in /usr/share/doc/initscripts-7.93.20.EL/sysconfig.txt and no documentation included with the system-config-* RPMs. Does this simply not support having different devices in different profiles? This (particularly the deleting of files I hand-edited) is the sort of thing that used to make me rip linuxconf out of the older RedHat distributions. On a similar note, my ISP has four nameservers, plus I want to include my local LAN nameserver and the nameserver from my work network -- but system-config-network insists on deleting all but the first three nameservers from my resolv.conf. Yeah, I know, upstream issue, but as long as I'm venting ...

CentOS 4.2 hangs at power-on boot

I've just installed CentOS 4.2 on a brand-new PC. It appears to be working fine except for one thing: When the system is first powered on, the boot sequence hangs after Starting udev: Initializing hardware ... storage network audio If I then hit the reset button, it reboots and successfully proceeds. Looking at rc.sysinit and the output of kmodule, it would appear that the problem is with loading the pciehp module. In dmesg after the successful boot I can see a bunch of errors from that module (cut'n'paste appended at the end of this message), but everything appears to be working correctly -- graphical boot was fine, gdm starts up and I have a functional X session when I log in. Any clues? Google found some Debian bug reports regarding hotplug and USB drives ... hmm, now that I think of it, I do have a USB mouse plugged in at boot time, next chance I have I'll try it without that. Adding "redhat" or "centos" to the search didn't turn up anything conclusive. I've tried forcing sshd to use IPV4 only (with the -4 flag) but that just gets me back into the land of X authentication failures. The problem with rasmol is that it tries to use the X shared memory extension if it thinks it's running on the same host as the X server. To rasmol an ssh-forwarded X connection looks like a local connection, so it tries to use shared memory and fails. The 'X11UseLocalhost no' trick works because it makes the forwarded connection look like a connection to a remote machine so the application falls back to using an alternative. Looking at the source for rasmol I see that it uses this test to determine if it can use MIT-SHM: ptr = DisplayString(dpy); if( !ptr || (*ptr==':') || !strncmp(ptr,"localhost:",10) || !strncmp(ptr,"unix:",5) || !strncmp(ptr,"local:",6) ) So even with 'X11UseLocalhost yes' it might be possible to fool it into not using MIT-SHM by setting your DISPLAY to '127.0.0.1:10.0' (or whatever). Help with megaraid_mbox driver

Hi All, I've built a custom CD based on CentOS 4.2. An OOB CentOS 4.2 disk will detect the megaraid (Perc4) card in a Dell 1850/2850, and load properly. My version does not. I have checked, and the original shipping kernel for CentOS contains the same megaraid_mbox driver as the updated kernel that is on my CD. Basically, my CD removed some RPMS, and added others for a custom distro. As far as I can see, the proper kernel files are still present (I'm using an unmodified buildinstall script, and Johnny Hughes' build script for the CD). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to figure out why the new CD says it cannot find an appropriate hard drive to install on? Is there something specific that would be missing like pcitables, etc? Thanks for any advice or suggestions. -Scott

CentOS 4 x86_64 - Nagios plugins compile issue

Hi Trying to compile nagios plugins on an x86_64 box as i have non standard locations for some software and coming accross this issue. Http proxy set in yum.conf is not working for the new yum mirrorlist system

Hi, It seems that the new update system does not consider the proxy option set yum.conf. After installing centos-yumconf-4-4.4.noarch.rpm together with the new yum packages, I was no longer able to use yum. In my case HTTP access is allowed only through a proxy. The proxy URL is configured in yum.conf. If I set the environment variable http_proxy from the shell I start yum, everything works. If I comment out the mirrorlist lines in CentOS-Base.repo yum is working fine without setting http_proxy environment variable (using the proxy defined in yum.conf). Anyone else seeing this or am I doing something wrong? Regards, Radu

Enabling POP3 on CentOS4 / dovecot

I'm bringing up a new CentOS 4 machine on my home network. It's intended to replace a crufty machine that has been acting as my mail gateway. The existing machine does spam and virus filtering, and then I let my kids get their mail off it with POP3 from another machine on the home office LAN (so they're not competing with me for the keyboard when I'm working). Dovecot starts up an IMAP4 server but not a POP3 server. Is there a standard configuration (an RPM I've failed to install? an /etc/sysconfig script? somthing I can "chkconfig on" that I'm just not seeing?) for enabling POP3 with dovecot on RHEL4/CentOS4?

Does your rkhunter do an md5 check?

I rebuilt rkhunter-1.2.8-1.noarch.rpm by using the spec and tgz from the rkhunter site (www.rootkit.nl) (I rebuilt it using his instructions.) However rkhunter does not do an md5 check. The box used to have fedora and each time there were updates it would complain that the some of the md5's don't match. I contacted the author using his contact feature on Wednesday but he hasn't replied. I know Karanbir's repo has 1.1.9 (as does fedora development), but i thought I'd have the latest. The box has # cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 4.2 (Final) which is supported in the os.dat file in rkhunter. ssh x11 forwarding problem

I'm running into an a problem with x11 forwarding over ssh I'm trying to run an application (rasmol - molecule viewing program) which when using the the default setup for x11 forwarding causes the following error: X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied) Major opcode of failed request: 132 (MIT-SHM) Minor opcode of failed request: 1 (X_ShmAttach) Serial number of failed request: 230 Current serial number in output stream: 231 It used to be possible to overcome this by setting X11UseLocalhost no in /etc/ssh/sshd_config This worked in CentOS 3 but does not in CentOS 4 (or Fedora 4 for that matter), and I'm guessing it is a XFree86 vs. Xorg issue. Now, when using X11UseLocalhost no no X applications work ssh myserver # echo $DISPLAY myserver.fqdn:10.0 # xdpyinfo xdpyinfo: unable to open display "myserver.fqdn:10.0". I have X11 forwarding set up on the client side by default. on the other hand if I don't use tunneling, but set DISPLAY=myclient: 0 and xhost +myserver on the client then the application works. I prefer to use tunneling if possible. Thoughts about why X11UseLocalhost doesn't work? Tony Schreiner

kernel panic: Assertion failure in __journal_unfile_buffer()

I was just extracting a 96MB tar file ( tar -xWf backup.tar ), the cpu load was 99% for a long time. I then stopped it and tried again, but this time this popped up in my ssh session: -- Message from syslogd@rock at Sat Feb 18 00:47:05 2006 ... rock kernel: Assertion failure in __journal_unfile_buffer() at fs/jbd/transaction.c:1520: "jh->b_jlist < 9" -- A kernel panic dump is displayed on the servers monitor. Here is what I can remember: Call trace: jurnal_commit_transaction+<something> [jdb] Is the panic dump stored anywhere? When I rebooted, the raid set was dirty and it was re-synced, it did not mark a drive faulty or started using a spare, the raid set still uses the same two disks and now everything seems normal, except this is the second time it does this. It is a fresh install of Cent-OS 4.2 from the DVD image and with the latest updates from yum. The server has 4 80GB software mirrored IDE disks, 2 + 2 spares, one on each channel of a HPT374 controller. I have no idea about what to look for; I have tested the disks many times with the vendor tools and no errors have been found.

OT: Local Mirror problems, wrong paths to RPMs with yum update

This week I set up a local mirror for a few dists, including Centos 4.0 and 4.2, and Fedora Core 3 and 4. I'm using a script called yum-pull. For the most part I really like the script, it automates the setup of your mirrors and tries a bunch of different mirrors when it goes out to get updates, if it fails on one it tries another. It uses the usual suspects, createrepo and repoview, among others. That being said I have it all setup, but I have the following problem. For some reason the paths are not always right when you run yum update from a workstation. I'm installing a fresh copy of centos 4.2 right now so I can test the centos mirror, but I definitely have problems with my FC3 and 4 ones. One example, if I include atrpms in my repo file, it's looking for the RPMs in this directory: http://mirror.myserver.com/repomirror/fedora/linux/4/i386/atrpms/ BUT it should be looking here: http://mirror.myserver.com/repomirror/fedora/linux/4/i386/atrpms/packages/ Can anyone tell me where this is screwed up at? The directory structure looks like this: repomirror/fedora/linux/4/i386/atrpms/headers/ repomirror/fedora/linux/4/i386/atrpms/packages/ repomirror/fedora/linux/4/i386/atrpms/repodata/ repomirror/fedora/linux/4/i386/updates/headers/ repomirror/fedora/linux/4/i386/updates/packages/ repomirror/fedora/linux/4/i386/updates/repodata/ etc. I just tried my centos4.2 mirror on the new test install and it worked ok. Problems with IDE RAID on specific motherboard

About 9 months ago, I made a policy decision to adopt RAID 1 on all systems I admin. (about 20 systems, all told) It's been a long, slow process. One of the systems is being upgraded from CentOS3 to CentOS4. It's been rock-solid stable for over a year. It's a "frankenserver" with parts from all over the place, maintained over years of active service. Currently, it's got an ASRock "M810LMR" motherboard in it. http://www.ciao.co.uk/ASRock_M810LMR__5410842 When I install the O/S (I've tried CentOS 4.0 and 4.2) with IDE RAID, it bombs, takes hours just to format the drives, and won't reboot, getting stuck at "GRUB". But, when I install the SAME TWO DRIVES without RAID, (eg: some partitions on one drive, some on the other) it works perfectly. I've tried putting both drives on separate IDE cablels, using completely different drives, and trying CentOS 4.0 and 4.2. When I try to set up IDE raid while it's taking a very long time to format the drives, I see lots of errors about DMA on the alternate consoles, and there being only one drive (unable to start RAID array, only 1 drive found) even though the installer and disk druid have no problem reporting both drives. It comes down to something like "/dev/mdN delayed until /dev/mdX is synchronized because they share physical resources"... I'm stumped, and falling back to non-RAID because this system is needed in production. And, I'm not new to using software RAID, I've been using it for years without issue. Hello everyone, Does anyone know if there are any Postgresql 8.1.3 RPMs for CentOS 3.6? I've looked at the Postgresql website but I couldn't find anything under RHEL3/CentOS3. I've tried installing the RHEL4 RPMs which seem to work. Unfortunately, I'm getting errors whenever I try to compile PHP5 from source. clock, centos 4 and dual core?

Hi, I have a dual core athlon server and it is gaining 1 day every 2 days w/o time sync. Even with ntpd running, the time is not under control. I must put a very frequent cronjob of 'ntpdate' to keep the time under control. This creates big problems since winbind eventually stops working so my users can't access their data. If the windows printer use paralel port, linux send the job, and this work fine.. but if the printer is USB, this don't works! If the same printer have USB and parallel port, parallel works, but USB not.. If you block port 81 outbound, centos-yumconf-4-4.4.noarch.rpm will cause your yum to stop working for CentOS-4. We were serving mirrorlists on port 81 for our new update system, but since this caused some users problems, we are now serving mirrorlists on both port 80 and 81. centos-yumconf-4-4.5.noarch.rpm has released to change the default configuration to port 80 for mirrorlist retrieval. If your yum is not working you can get centos-yumconf-4-4.5.noarch.rpm here: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/updates/i386/RPMS/centos-yumconf-4-4.5.no… This is a noarch RPM and should work on any centos-4 version. You can install it after download with this command: rpm -Uvh centos-yumconf-4-4.5.noarch.rpm

I have 4 computer on the LAN connected as follow. comp1(WinXP)---------------------------------> hub1---->router comp2(winXP)---------------------------------> hub1---->router comp3(WinXP)wireless ---> access point----> hub1--->router comp4(CentOS 4.2)-------------------------------------->router I have samba installed on CentOS 4.2 with SELinux enable, everything is up 2 dated. I use swat to make a share folder. testparm doesn't show anything suspicious. Connecting to samba share folder from the same CentOS machine is possible. However, my Windows XP machines can only see my linux machine through network neigbourhood but they can not access it. ssh attack

Hi, I get ssh connect attempts all the time, to my servers at home and at work. I've noticed lately they come from a certain ip address, hitting every 3 or 4 seconds, trying 50 or 100 different user names and passwords. And I get these sweeps from 2 or 3 ip addresses a day. I guess this is an automated attempt to guess a user/pass and break into a system. I tried to secure ssh better by putting in an AllowUsers line in sshd_config. Then I thought tcp wrappers and just putting in my own addresses in /etc/hosts.allow would be even better, until I found out that all mail to my email server would be rejected. I have 2 questions. One, is there anything you can do to stop these attempts, other than not running ssh? And two, do those ssh attempts every 3 or 4 seconds slow down a box, or put any strain on it? John

If I disable squid interception, all works fine. I see in the access_log from squid that the last request its a POST Anyone have seen this problem? How can I debug it. But when I connected the ipod to the firewire port, I got a lot of weird numbers and interrupt errors and the system crashed badly. Cannot access printing setup using VNC

Hi we installed centos on a Intel server board with LSI rad (no raid configured for the lsi). in Centos it sees both drives so we software raid them and the installation goes well and finishes properly. Make eth1 primary interface

I have a Centos 3 server with three network interfaces. eth0 is for the local network and the firewall is the gateway, the ip and gateway are set statically. eth1 is a adsl connection using dhcp to allocate the ip. I want to make eth1 the default route. If it was statci I would just use a "route add default gwd eth1" command, but I can't do that with DHCP. Directory server (is there)

I want the directory server, but in the faqs say that redhat was no free the src of the directory server, and i dont know why? if they use GPL software, i think they "must" free the src of that server. I found an rpm at fedora project that say thats the directory server, but obviusly it is not stable because of is not a redhat enterprise soft, but anyway i had installed on my centos 4.2 , but its have a lot of errors and not working. Anybody have a directory server running on centos ?? can help me to do it?

I want that postfix check the users in the ldap db that a have running but the only way that i find is compiling a source of postfix, and if i do that i have no anymore updates of postfix, so i have to update manualy each time thats be needed, in debian exists a package of postfix compiled with ldap support, and with updates support, but no in centos, in the redhat networks exists ? or if i buy redhat , i will have the same problem? thanks ill wait for responses lucho

Question about updates again

Presumably, the CentOS 4.3 update is not far away. I have CentOS on several servers now and am doing automatic updates. What can I excpect when the actual update gets pushed? Is there an inclrease in the number of patches? Does it happen all in one day? And if so, how much notice do I have? Although I asked on the list a while back, I got some answers that implied said that at update time, bug fix patches are released and at other times only security patches. But I also got a couple of answers that implied that the quarterly update was just a CD that brought the distro up to date with the already issued patches. Sorry to keep beating on this issue, but I want to avoid surprises. Thanks, Steve

How can I disable sound?

I usually don't setup any GUI on my Linux systems. Yesterday I installed with X and Gnome on a spare system for some testing and hit a problem. Right after login the system freezes. The system froze already earlier when I opted to test the sound card on the Welcome screen and when I login with the alternative login choice xterm and shut down it freezes when "saving mixer settings". So, I suspect there's some problem with the onboard sound or with the driver that gets used from X. How's the best way to cope with this? I don't really need sound, how to disable (short of disabling it on the mainboard)? I already commented out the alsactl stuff in modprobe.conf, but this doesn't change anything and the snd_* modules still get loaded. According to modprobe it thinks it's Intel 8x0 while it is an nforce2 chipset. Well, this may be okay for the kernel, I don't know. Using Webalizer in Webmin

My apologies ahead of time if im off topic for this list. but hopefully someone knows a simple solution. I have two domains. lordsofhorde.com and dragunsrealm.ca In apache I have virtual hosts setup for these domains with a separate *access_log file in the vhost settings for each domain. So each domain is generating its own log file. I use webalizer within webmin to check out the excellent graphical reports of my webserver logs. I have each logfile setup in webalizer so that I have two different reports for each domain. For the most part it works, I do get two completely separate reports between the two domains. However, when I look at the top of the report for both log files it says dragunsrealm.ca at the top. Anyone know how I can make it so webalizer reflects the domain of the logfile/report im looking at? All the webalizer reports say dragunsrealm.ca at the top and I would like for webalizer to differentiate each domain depending on the log report im looking at instead of them all saying dragunsrealm.ca Any ideas? SATA RAID Controller Support?

Greetings, I just got new Dell PowerEdge SC1420 and a 6 channel SATA RAID controller card (Adaptec 2610SA from Dell also) When I attempt to install CentOS 4.2, it doesnt find the RAID 1 mirror I set up. (2 X 160Gig drives) It doesnt find any hard drives at all. Does anyone have anything to suggest here? Thanks Ryan

KDE panel configuration

I am running CentOS 4.2 with KDE 3.5.1 from kde-redhat.org. I am not able to configure the panels: control center -> desktop -> panels comes up, but is empty. Only the frame and the buttons on the bottom show. KDE 3.5.1 on Kubuntu does not have that problem. httpd permissions question

I'm using yum-pull for creating a local yum repo. I have a non-root user that runs the script and the files are stored in that user's home directory. I'm trying to make that directory available with httpd. The user owns all the files and subdirs and the rights on all the files is: -rw-r--r-- I added this to the bottom of httpd.conf and restarted httpd. Alias /repomirror /home/user1/YumRepo <Directory /home/user1/YumRepo> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny #Allow from 172.16 127.0.0.1 #Deny from all </Directory> When I try to access http://servername/repomirror I get a 403 permission denied. What permissions need to be set? Can I publish the directory this way? Thanks, James

FreeNX documentation and other miscellanea

I was having trouble connecting to the server that I am using for remote development so I updated things and rebooted. Connected into FreeNX nicely after that...wonder if there is issues with memory leaks or something... Anyway, it appears that the nxagent grabbed port 3000 which is what I was using for rubyonrails/webrick (I probably can change that) which sort of tells me that when I first loaded freenx/nxagent, port 3000 was already in use so it probably adjusted itself but upon reboot, nxagent got all comfortable in port 3000 before I logged in and tried to start webrick in rails... So I wandered through the documentation on NoMachine.com but that doesn't really cover the nxagent and in checking out /etc/nxserver/node.conf.sample, it refers to documentation in !M which means absolutely nothing to me whatsoever. I do see that there are some options that might be interesting such as remote printing - and now that I enabled remote printing on the client side, the freenx server seems disinterested and probably has to be configured and I'm thinking that documentation might be a good thing...where does one find more details on FreeNX server/agent configuration? Help with disk server stability issues

Hi All, I am looking for advice on how to cure a constantly-crashing NFS server which crashes every few hours, or at least, every few days. The kernel log file (below) points toward NFS as a likely cause. The system disk is a 3ware 8000 series RAID1 mirror. The data disk is using a 3Ware 9000 controller to produce two RAID1 devices; these are then striped (RAID0) in software to form a RAID 10 device. We're using a 2.6 kernel, xfs filesystem, and NFS3/UDP. We're running CentOS 4.2 with a 2.6.9-22.0.1.106 kernel. This kernel has xfs extensions, and we're running the xfs filesystem for /home (obtained from CentOS website). In "lsmod" I see both 3w_xxxx and 3w_9xxx modules. NFS is over UDP, jumbo frames (9000), 32k rsize/wsize, async server, async clients, noac. This system has been serving /home in this configuration since October 2005; we've seen it crash rarely, but uptimes were usually on the order of months. This past week, it can't seem to remain up for much longer than about a day. nmap showing lots of ports open that shouldn't be

I have a CentOS 4.2 machine. lokkit shows that a firewall is enabled, and it is customized to allow SSH, Web, and DNS traffic only. But if I run nmap against the server IP (from my home machine, outside the local network) it shows over 1000 open ports. Am I not understanding nmap, or is there something seriously wrong here? apache virtual host

I don't ever do this... Shouldn't this be enough to set up a virtual server in apache? I did create an entry in /etc/hosts and in dns for this fqdn it still gives me the contents of /var/www/html and not /home/craig/ruby-db/th-db/public <VirtualHost *> DocumentRoot "/home/craig/ruby-db/th-db/public" ServerName app-server.tobyhouse.com <Directory "/home/craig/ruby-db/th-db/public"> allow from all Options Indexes ExecCGI FollowSymLinks ReWriteEngine On </Directory> </VirtualHost> What am I missing? Disk Activity Monitor

I have a USB disk connected to a Poweredge server. The USB Disk is a Mad Dog MegaVault with a 160GB drive installed. It's all working fine, but the external LED on the unit is not working. I'm currently running a script (yum-pull) for setting up a yum mirror and it sits for long periods of time seemingly doing nothing. I started the script this morning at 6:20 for my FC4 yum mirror and it's now 8:50 and it's still running. A "top" shows very little activity from a CPU perspective. The guy who wrote the script says there's probably tons of disk activity going on. The script does continue to run because it will eventually finish. One might think the slowness is because it's a USB drive, but I can copy large amounts of data and do permission changes on files, at the same time this script is running, and it all happens quickly. Guess I'm just trying to verify whether there really is a lot of disk activity going on. I tried looking at ksysguard, but wasn't very successful at seeing what I wanted. I'm not sure I want to use yum-pull if it take 3 hours to run per mirror. Right now I'm mirroring FC4, but I also want to do Centos 4.0 and 4.2, and maybe even Suse 9.2. Are there any other disk activity monitors I should try? Thanks, James

mail access list

I just got through updating my /etc/mail/access file, adding about 20 more IP's that are sending spam/junk mail. During the process, I noticed I had some partial IP's in there, like 64.12.233 which is what I wanted to block. The IP did NOT however get blocked. From what I see, as long as I have a full ip address, they are blocked, but the partial (16) is not. Should it not work anyhow? Never had this problem before, and yes, I run a make on the file after editing. Sam

All, Is there a way to "re-initialize" as disk? remove the the boot loader and partions etc... make it "seem" like a brand new disk? Thanks, Jerry

List of packages in RHEL extras?

I'm subscribed to the Nahant list and noted someone complaining about the IBM version of Java. Whilst his problems would probably disappear by using the official Java from www.java.com, my question is what is the list of rpms in the extras ISO/channel?
