Hello all, I'm not quite sure what has changed in the recent rsh commands, but I can't seem to get around the password promting. I need a clnk rsh between two machines in order to run my backup script. I added all the usual .rhosts with the proper permissions et al added the xinetd.d confilg files, opened ports 543 and 544 in my firewall, yet when I use the rsh commands, I get either a password prompt or some Kerberos stuff that I don't use. ie: rexec intrbase ls password: and connect to address 192.168.99.211: Connection refused Trying krb4 rlogin... connect to address 192.168.99.211: Connection refused trying normal rlogin (/usr/bin/rlogin) Last login: Thu Feb 2 07:47:37 from spare As you can see this is for an internal network, so I'm not freaked out about security here. I can't seem to find anything in the help files about it. How can I configure rsh to use the old, normal way of auth? I'm using the latest CentOS4.2 Cheers. -- Scott

Mailers on unix-like systems usually want to lowercase the address. PHP upgrade from 4.3.9 to 4.4.2 or 5.x

Sorry - noob-ish question.. I have been having problems on a CentOS 4.2 server following an upgrade to the latest version of SugarCRM (segfaults in Apache and some functions not working). Someone has just posted in the SugarCRM forums that they had exactly the same problems on CentOS 4.2 and they fixed them by upgrading from PHP 4.3.9 to 5.0.5. Being a more cautious chap, I'd like to try an upgrade to PHP 4.4.2 first but want to make sure I'm not entering a minefield with PHP as I can't find a friendly yum update so I would appreciate a heads-up on how best to go about it without screwing the whole thing up - I am reading through the notes on the PHP web site but would appreciate it if someone would outline exactly what rpms or binaries I need to install and/or compile. Assuming 4.4.2 doesn't fix things I will have to go for 5.0.5 so any advice on this would be appreciated as the last thing I want to do is lose use of SugarCRM completely! Thanks in advance.

RAID1: Changing / partition from 2 to 4 active devices

Hi, I have 4 disks and I want to have my swap, / (root), /boot on the 4 disks, RAID1. I successfully managed to get /boot and swap on the 4 disks, but I can't get / on the 4 disks. It is only on 2 right now. I cannot umount /, so how do I do that? Boot in rescue mode? RAID 5 is not an option for now. -- Ugo -> Please don't send a copy of your reply by e-mail. As far as tinydns the idea of having to install a "control daemon" to run his software is kind of ridiculous to me. Bind really couldn't be any easier to use, and it works every time. -Drew

A friend's machine just had his / partition goto zero percent free. This is an ext3 partition. Not an hour ago he had over 5 gigs free on an 8 gig partition. Any ideas where to look? Hi guys: Thanks for the input and helpful suggestions. I prefer the solution that allows a FTP login without a shell. A couple of you suggested I use something like /sbin/nologin and then FTP would work, but no shell would be allowed Actually, that is the first thing I tried, as nologin is my default shell when I add users. I have to add /bin/bash to get vsftpd to accept the conection. So I checked /etc/shells and /sbin/nologin is there. Apparantly that won't work. I have other services/users I might want to use with shells from time to time so I want the defalut to be "no shell unless I say so", not "get a shell unless I say no". Preferably controlled at teh password file. So, I tried Alin Osan's suggstion of modifying the pam file, and that *did* work. Thank you very much Alin. Much appreciated. Scott

disable media check on custom cd [dnk]

On a previous thread I was working on a custom install disk that would boot directly into a vnc install - well I have the disk working exactly as I need it EXCEPT for 1 thing... the option to do a media check pops up... however as per my original email - there will be no keyboard/mouse/monitor attached during install... so I can not press the "skip" option. Now to get the VNC install to work, I am using boot options.... I was reading up on it, and there is a "mediacheck" boot option - however my understanding is that if added to the boot options it forces a media check to happen. There seems to be no option to specify "no" to the media check. Does anyone know of a way to disable the media check? This way it ensures that the cd boots direct into a vnc install with absolutely zero keyboard interaction. Thanks in advance. Dustin

Hi, im new to the list, so bear with me if this was discussed earlier! For historical issues we need to maintain usernames in all capitals ie. CD our test environment is running centos 3.4 - our live environment is on redhat 8.0 the useradd program won't allow me to create a new user with capitals, and usermod wont change a lower case user name to upper case! Perhaps this message is only to Jim Perrin... Not that I've specifically have had any issues that I can point to... almost at the top of http://www.rubyonrails.org/down We recommend Ruby 1.8.4 for use with Rails. Ruby 1.8.2 is fine too, but version 1.8.3 is not. Myself, I have sort of backed off on the rails development for the moment and am becoming intimately lost in ruby itself and am presently working on my Fedora Core - 4 system which has ruby-1.8.4 but I am going to get back rails development on the CentOS system when I have begun to fill in the cavernous gaps of knowledge that are holding me back. Easy way to reject all incoming packets except from certain IPs?

Is there an easy way to reject all incoming packets except those that come from certain IPs? I can't find any way via iptables or via the GUI provided with CentOS (or another GUI for CentOS) without having to resort to Shorewall. It's fine if the answer is "go with Shorewall". I just didn't want to have to become a Shorewall expert for this really small task. Any help/advice on this is appreciated. Am I missing an easier way? Preston

Junk mail filtering in Evolution

I'm upgrading a few clients to CentOS 4.2. They have been using Evolution 1.x, so this is the first release that will have junk mail filtering. So I've switched from Thunderbird to Evolution on my own desktop tp better support them. I have been dutifully marking the spam and the ham. But the filter has so far not flagged a single email on its own. (I've flagged about a hundred so far, so it's had time to learn.) Is there something in the config that I need to set to get it to filter? One possible kink is that my own mail account uses imap. My users will be using pop3. Thanks, Steve

custom vnc install disk [dnk]

Hi all.... I had posted hte following on teh centos forums, and thought there might be additional people in here who do not browse those forum, so after 4 days I am posting over here as well (sorry for the double - but figured after 4 days it was safe to do so). Hi there.... I am trying to make a custom centos server cd that will essentially do the following: throw the disk in, boot the machine, and have it connect to a listening VNC viewer on another machine - then just do the install as per normal (nothing else automated other than the VNC connection). My goal is that since I have limited space at home I want to be able to load centos onto a machine just by plugging in an ethernet cable (no monitor/mouse/keyboard), and booting it. I know using VNC is possible and such, but in the tutorials I have read, you basically you type 'linux vnc' at the boot prompt. I was reading about using a kickstart file, but the same type of issue you need to press "enter" to start the vnc install. Any ideas on how to get around this? This is what I did so far (so that maybe someone can point out my error). Now just for detail I created a SIMPLE ks.cfg file with the following: firewall --disabled vnc --connect 192.168.0.100 And when adding directives to a kickstart file - does hte order matter? IE when addign hte vnc directive, does it have to come after the networking info, etc? it was located on my cd at: /isolinux/ks.cfg I edited the file /isolinux/isolinux.cfg <snip> default linux prompt 1 timeout 1 display boot.msg F1 boot.msg F2 options.msg F3 general.msg F4 param.msg F5 rescue.msg F7 snake.msg label linux kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img ramdisk_size=8192 ks=cdrom:/isolinux/ks.cfg <snip> As you can see i set the time out to happen immediately (hoping ot get it to jump right into the install). And I added the location to my KS file to the default option. Any ideas?

OK - next level of question then... taking a wild swing, I set up /etc/yum.repos/kde-redhat.repo and for S&G's, I ran the obligatory 'yum update' to see what would happen. It's an aggressive update to be sure. KDE 3.5.0 (and all the dependent stuff such as qt) but also samba and openoffice. Is anyone reporting happiness / contentment with their repo enabled and their updates installed? Craig

Hi All, 2 days ago, I used skype on my laptop, which hadn't seen the net before then. I successfully spoke with my mother, and had no problems. Yesterday, I had what I believe was an unauthorized access to my laptop, so, I changed all passwds on my smoothwall box, and also put the local host onto a new subnet. Today, I experienced some weirdness with skype, where, I could hear/be heard, but, the ring tone for calling/receiving had stopped. I most certainly made no changes to skype's configuration. Today, whilst snooping around my laptop, for numerous things, I came upon some files in /tmp, which I don't recognize, [root@localhost tmp]# ls keyring-XphDRC gconfd-racket mapping-racket ssh-qONcvE2869 gconfd-root orbit-racket xses-racket.bWVjc5 keyring-P5i6Xo orbit-root below is just some content from "xses-racket.bWVjc5" (nautilus:2955): Eel-WARNING **: Error starting command ''/tmp/keyring-XphDRC/socket'': Failed to execute child process "/tmp/keyring-XphDRC/socket" (Permission denied) I ran a soundcard test today, could that be it? greetings i am thinking of purchasing a 256 meg or larger AGP video card my current card is a 128 meg nvidia geforce fx 5200 and i have a viewsonic vp201s lcd monitor are their larger memory AGP cards worth buying? i have no idea it will be for serious CentOS and Win XP integration and testing and eventually production issues... AMD64 cpuspeed/cool 'n quiet

Can anyone tell me if cool'n quiet (which is controlled by the cpuspeed utility under linux ?) works when running a 64bit capable CPU in 32bit mode, ie the entire OS is 32bit. I tried it with centos 4.1 and it did not seem to be able to throttle the CPU when running in 32bit mode, mind you that was a few months ago. Cheers, Bards.

CentOS 4.2 Mouse Tracking Unstable

Just installed CentOS 4.2 on a system that was running RedHat-9. The system is connected to the keyboard, video and mouse through a Belkin OmniView Pro KVM switch. After bootup, the the system tracks movement by the mouse just fine. The unstable behavior can be characterized as follows: 1. Console is switched to a different system for a time and then switched back to the Centos system. 2. Movement of the mouse causes the cursor to jump all over the screen erratically. 3. Windows appear/disappear as if mouse-clicks are selecting things rapidly at random. It's pretty difficult to follow visually, so I can't say in detail what is going on. I changed xorg.conf to have "simulate 3-button mouse" set to "no". No change in behavior. The mouse is a pretty simple one that came with an E-Machines box and has worked fine with all of the systems up until now. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Charles L. More questions about patch management

I'm still trying to get an idea about how best to handle patches on CentOS. Say I want to apply security patches automatically on a nightly basis. But when the push from 4.2 to 4.3 comes around, I want to defer that for when I can do it manually. Is that possible? (Preferably with yum, but I would use up2date if that were necessary.) Also, I'm used to doing 'yum update'. I understand that 'yum upgrade' enables the obsoletion logic in yum, but practically speaking, when is it appropriate to use one or the other? Thanks, Steve

Cannot disable SELinux

I'm getting a SELinux warning when trying to start a perl daemon (bigsister) that I installed on a fresh CentOS 4.2 system and the start fails (there is nothing else logged, I cannot be sure that this is the fail reason but I assume it). However, SELinux is set to permissive mode, isn't permissive mode meant to only issue warnings and not block anything? So, as a first workaround I tried disabling SELinux, but this doesn't work either, I still get the warning which should not happen at all if disabled. cat /selinux/enforce shows "0" (= not enforced) I disabled by setting SELINUX=disabled in /etc/sysconfig/selinux (whichs symlinks to /etc/selinux). Yes, I rebooted with each try. The unofficial SELinux FAQ at http://www.crypt.gen.nz/selinux/faq.html says to add a kernel parameter to grub.conf for completely disabling it. However, that's not what I want. I want to disable it by "normal" means (or preferrably set it to *real* permissive mode). What am I doing wrong? Kai -- Kai Schätzl, Berlin, Germany

Trying yum update for the latest announcements. Part of the problem I experienced last week appears again: lame library DSA key is unavailable. I had tried to resolve this last week, to no avail. Tried again this week and found a French site with the key ID, but for libmad. Anyone can give me the proper instructions so this works? dhcpd proxy and/or windows autoupdates

At one of our sites we have most outgoing ports blocked and everyone going through squid for web access. But it seems Windows autoupdate doesn't pick up the local users proxy settings so we ended up opening port 80 to some of the windows update servers. While searching around I found and option called custom-proxy-server but I don't see that setting in the man pages. Anyone have experience setting proxy server settings in dhcpd?

Help - iSCSI and SAMBA?

Hi All, I have a client trying to us a Promise Tech iSCSI array to share 2.8TB via SAMBA. I have CentOS 4.2 with all updates installed on an IBM server. The installation and setup was pretty straightforward. The Promise box is using Gigabit Ethernet, and is the only device on that net (I think they are using a cross-over cable - I didn't set up the hardware). We're experiencing periodic "stoppages" with some of the Samba users on this server. Their Windows clients, which have drives mapped to the IBM server (which has the iSCSI partitions "mounted"), periodically "pause" for about 30-60 seconds. The machines are NOT locked up, as we can take screenshots, move the mouse, etc, but disk IO seems "stuck". When it happens, about anywhere from 3-12 people are affected (but not the other ~80 users). There are no network errors on either the iSCSI interfaces, or the switches and/or network interfaces. The kernel is not swapping (though the symptoms SEEM a lot like a process getting swapped to disk). The cpu usage is not spiking in correlation to the events, as far as we can tell. It DOES appear that the % of time the CPU is servicing IO requests is saturated, from iostat. I will paste the iostat info from one of the events below. Has anyone else seem such behavion, and/or do you have suggestions for troubleshooting or otherwise correcting it? I have already 6 Centos machines here and it is getting strange having to pull down updates to each system. Seems like I should set up one system to pull updates and then all other systems to point to it. How? Plus then I would want to add to this repository. Say that a number of my systems use tomcat which is only available via rpm. I would like to be able to add it to my repository, and if even manually, to keep it current. This way, when I build a new system, after the build I would do a yum update (from my server), then a yum install of all of the extras that particular system needs.

kernel panic after DDing disk to another one + question on LVM

This is a machine in a remote datacenter, so I have no console access to it. The machine suddenly went offline, was reset remotely and showed several unrecoverable DMA errors when it came up. After a second normal reboot (to see if the problem was consistent) it lost several services and didn't come up after the third reboot. After contacting the datacenter the disk got replaced and the old image was DDed to the new disk. The new disk runs into a kernel panic now. I would expect this since the DD copies over the existing problems as well. I do not have any experience with LVM (which CentOS 4.2 uses by default, this is only my second test machine for CentOS and my only remote one), so I would like to ask if (besides the assumed reason) LVM could also cause this problem after cloning the disk to another one. I don't think so but I want to be sure. I have access to a (debian minimal) rescue system which doesn't have LVM, so I don't have access to most of the disk (other than /boot), so there's not much room for investigation. I plan to use the pxeboot kernel now to get it up and reinstall CentOS. My question is will I be able to do this or will the pxeboot kernel need to have access to that volume before I repartition? Also, can I disable using LVM (I think I don't need it and it may create more problems than it helps in my case) before setup starts or do I have to do this during setup (I assume I can do this during the manual partition phase?)? resuming FreeNX sessions

I've been running a FreeNX session for several days. During that time, I have occasionally lost the connect and when I re-establish the connection, it resumes where I left off and it was really nice. Tonight I lost the connection and when I reconnected, it started a new session but when I run NX Session Administrator application on the FreeNX server, it still shows the session as 'running'. I really want to re-connect to my other session as that has the editors and everything else running and I could terminate it and start over but I am wondering if there are any tricks that might be had to reconnect to an existing session (I can see the pid for both the current session and the session that I would like to connect for example...) Upgrading samba past the regular packages

Despite Craig's excellent help with my Excel/Samba, I continue to have trouble with Samba 3.0.10 under CentOS 4.2. Quickbooks, now, too, is just acting really weird. I'm tempted to upgrade beyond the regular packages, although I really don't like to do that, because the samba list and a lot of info online lead me to believe that 3.0.11+ fixes these issues. What's the best way to use something newer than the regualr packages? Does someone out there have a CentOS repo with a newer samba? Should I just use the Fedora packages? Thanks, Matt

vsftp vs shell logins

I need to be able to allow specific system accounts to ftp to a box. As far as I can tell I have to give them a shell in /etc/passwd (i.e. /bin/bash) in order for their ftp login to work. I do *not* however want them to be able to log into a shell or ssh session. I cannot restrict by IP. What's the best way to accomplish this? Thanks, Scott

install won't boot

Circumstances: The system is a hardware duplicate of a system that installed and works for many months. Running CentOS 4.x. The system was previously in service with CentOS 3.x and I'm trying to install CentOS 4.1 on it from downloaded CDs which have worked previously (these are the same CDs used to install the system that's working). Software RAID. Minimal packages System appears to install properly, then on first reboot halts with error: (note that this is hand copied, not cut-and-pasted, so there may be errors in spelling <frown): ... Creating block devices Creating root device Mounting root filesystem kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Freeing unused kernel memory: 228k freed Warning: unable to open an initial console. and system halts with nothing else on screen. I even tried downloading the entire /boot partition contents from the working machine and installing the contents on the /boot partition on the local machine. Same problem. I was supposed to get this server into the data center; it's now 02:19. I'm going home to get a few hours sleep. Any suggestions? Help appreciated. Thanks. Anyone been able to get pgadmin3 installed on CentOS-4 ? The WxGTK2 stuff makes it impossible for me to get installed from RPM/SRPM from their site and likewise, couldn't rebuild from Fedora SRPMS either. I figure between Jim and Owen and ???, somebody might have succeeded where I would be doomed. I can get around with phppgadmin but pgadmin3 is pretty cool. Thanks Craig

dsniff berkley database issues

Hi All, as a CCNA student and wishing to eventualy do CCSP, I wanted to learn all about what hackers use/do to infiltrate networks, and was introduced to dsniff at a Linux meeting, TLUG, in Tokyo, but, am having problems installing it. Please see below. checking for Berkeley DB with 1.85 compatibility... /usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.4 configure: error: db_185.h or libdb.a not found in /usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.4 or not configured with --enable-compat185 [root@localhost <mailto:root@localhost> dsniff-2.3]# ./configure --enable-compat185 --with-db=/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.4 I have installed the latest BDB, and have, as you can see, added the correct arguments for ./configure. Anyone know a workaround for this? Network Card Priority

Hi, Is it common for CentOS to give priority to one particular network card over a second card when activating on boot up? I have two NIC's in my machine... one is tied into my windows box with an internal IP using xover cable. The other is tied into my hub, which then leads out to the internet with a WAN IP. When I run a constant ping on both IP's from my windows box and watch the boot up phase of CentOS it gets to activating eth0 and I start getting a couple ping replies from the WAN IP as it completes activating. Then it activates eth1 the NIC I have my internal IP on and the ping replies for the WAN IP stop and I then start getting ping replies from the internal IP. Should that be happening by default? If so, is there a way to make it so that both NIC's respond to pings off bootup and are active? In network settings both are marked active and both are marked to activate on bootup... just seems one is forcing the other offline and im not sure if that can be corrected... Is there a tinydns or dns wizard that could give me some hints, please? I am setting up and testing tinydns, but have some problems figuring out how to route. I do get dnscache to listen on tinydns. Also I do not understand why it will not answer the given ip (127.0.0.1) to the name server. 1. Both services are up running and seems to be working fine, so why no reply, (on the first query/reply below)? 2. I am behind a firewall/router and have dynamic ip address from my isp. Centos Folding@Home team!

Centos now has its own Folding@Home team! If you would like to learn more about what we do, please follow this <a href="http://folding.stanford.edu/">link</a> to the Folding@Home homepage. New to distributed computing?, its not a problem. Here is the simplest description: Many computers working on separate pieces of the same puzzle are faster than a few computers working on many pieces of the puzzle. By "distributing" the work load to as many computers as possible, results are faster and accumulate faster. This provides more information to the people who can use it, thus letting them actually work with the results instead of working to get results. Has anyone had success getting on-board sound to work on a Tyan S2895?

My setup is as follows: Motherboard: Tyan S2895 CPU: Two Opteron 275s Memory: 4 GB Disk: Three 250 GB SATA drives attached to a 3Ware 9500S-4LP RAID card Video: Nvidia GeForce 7800 The only hardware that I have added to the motherboard is the 3Ware card and the Nvidia card. The disks are configured as a RAID 5 array, and the machine boots from this array. I installed CentOS 4.2 x86 on this system without any problems during the installation. The on-board sound card was recognised and the correct driver (snd_intel8x0) installed to handle it. However, on rebooting into the SMP kernel after the install, the installation proved to be completely unstable. The kernel would panic sometimes during startup and sometimes during shutdown. The uniprocessor kernel seemed to be stable, but I noticed the following error messages appearing on the console during startup (the same error messages also appeared when booting into the SMP kernel): 3w-9xxx: scsi0: ERROR: (0x03:0x0104): SGL entry has illegal length:address=0x37077000, length=0xFF, cmd=X. Suspecting that there might be a driver incompatibility with my particular hardware configuration, I downloaded one of the Fedora 4 kernel sources from the 2.6.12 series, and compiled my own SMP kernel. This solved the stability issue, and I have been using this intensively for four months without experiencing any system crashes. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get the on-board sound to work. If I use XMMS to play an MP3 file (I have the XMMS MP3 plugin from the Dag Wieers repository installed), then on hitting the play button nothing happens. It is not that XMMS thinks that it is processing the file but no sound is being produced, rather the playback counter stays at "00:00". If I visit a web page containing a Flash animation with sound, Firefox locks up and has to be killed. I have compiled other Fedora kernels from source (2.6.14) and the same behaviour is observed. I also cannot get sound to work with the 2.6.9 uniprocessor kernel supplied with CentOS 4.2. I know that the hardware on the motherboard is not faulty, because the machine is set up to dual-boot into CentOS or Windows XP. On Windows, there is no problem with the sound, and interestingly once I have booted into Windows if I then reboot into Linux then the sound will work under Linux (although sound mixing is still a problem - one application outputting sound will cause a second application trying to output sound to stall until the first is finished). Has anyone on this list experienced the same problems, and if so found a way to overcome them? Failing that, does anyone have any suggestions for any tweaks I can make to my system to make the sound work without having to boot into Windows first? Thanks, David Mellor.

gfs performance

Hi all, Since I've got no reply on redhat cluster list, I'm trying here ... I'm testing a rhcs4 cluster with gfs. I noticed some poor performance while tarring data from a gfs volume to a local disk from both nodes at the same time, so I deceided to have a closer look. Here are the bonnie++ results: http://jure.pecar.org/gfs/ I don't know what to think of these ... but I doubt it's normal for performance to go down by an order of magnitude when both nodes are doing some i/o to the shared file system ... php-ldap can't log on with browser

It has been some posting about this issue, but I cant find a solution I can't log on to my ldap server port 389 with my browser. service seems to be running. sata_nv, CentOS 4 update 2 and hang during post-install

Good day. Thanks in advance for any help. I have a Tyan S2895 (Thunder K8WE) with 2 275 Opterons and the latest (1.02) bios. It appears to have an nVidia nForce SATA chipset which connects to a 250gb WD Caviar SATA drive. Using the CentOS 4 update 2 x86_64 DVD, the install is peachy until half-way through the "performing post install configuration" bit. Then it hangs forever. I have tried: disabling RAID in the bios mem=256M on the command line a text install -- the hang was at the 50% marker a memory check -- all clean according to memtest86+ 1.65 CentOS 4 update 1 on cd smaller root partition without any change in behavior. I then installed an old Adaptec 29160N and an old SCSI disk and turned off the SATA bits in the BIOS. CentOS installs just fine. Has anyone else seen this issue? If it's a problem only with the nVidia SATA drivers, anyone have a recommendation for a SATA card that could be used instead of the onboard stuff? RAID is not necessary. Thanks again. Cheers, Zube

Volume of patches for CentOS vs Fedora

I'm trying to come to a decision between CentOS 4.2 and Fedora Core 4 for use on a server. One of the things the server will be serving is X desktops so there are some advantages to Fedora. However, one thing I can't help but notice is that the patch volume for FC4 from Oct 11 2005 thru the present compared to CentOS 4.2 for the same period is about 5 times greater. In fact, since June, there are 899 RPMs in the FC4 updates directory for FC4 which seems absolutely insane. CentOS is a smaller distro, but not that much smaller. Also, I understand that CentOS's parent distro (from a prominent North American Linux Distributor) is supposed to be better tested before release than Fedora. But still, there must be some other factor to explain the disparity. Like CentOS only releasing a patch for security problems and not bug fixes or something like that. Could someone enlighten me? We need to resell systems that run commercial software on Linux. We were using Red Hat ES 3 originally. But we later realize that we cannot redistribute RHES without paying them huge subscription fee because of the trademark. I came across CentOS from WBEL mailing list. This looks like a godsend to me. I have some questions regarding CentOS. I would appreciate it if someone can provide me the answers: 1. Can I use your package to install a machine for resell? Is there fee involved? Do you have any EULA that I can get? 2. I believe it is RHES based, what is the version matrix corresponding to Red Hat ES? 3. Does it have extra stuff other than vanilla RHES added? 4. If I decide to do the rebuild myself to remove the RH trademark stuff, what packages should I modify? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Alex

CentOS 4.2 Install - Can't Surf Web

I just installed CentOS 4.2 on a system that was running RedHat 9. Now the browser (Mozilla Firefox) can't connect to web sites via their name (www.google.com <http://www.google.com/> ). It can however connect if the IP address is used (66.102.7.147). Also the 'dig' command times out with either the name or the IP address. Has anyone else seen this? I saw a reference to a kernel patch, but I thought the patch was for the server. I am actually not using a Linux LVS server, I am using a Foundry ServerIron to do the load balancing. It works great for standard balancing, but now I need to do direct routing to balance two CentOS4 servers. The instructions that came with the ServerIron just gave a single ifconfig command to set it up (which royally screwed up the networking). Do I need to install the kernel patch on these machines? And why would that affect the permissions problem I was seeing? As root, I should be able to create a file in any directory. It may not do what I expect if the functionality is not in the kernel, but I should be able to create the file. -- Bowie

Hi list. This is my first post here. Super newbie. I will try not to ask too many questions, but searching is hard when you don't even know where to begin. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I have just installed CentOS 4.2. I selected to have a firewall in the graphic installer, and I opened ports 22 and 80. Fine so far. SSH and HTTP both work. But now that everything is set up I have discovered I need to open port 53 in order to install djbdns. My main question is: what did I install by choosing to have a firewall in the CentOS installer? Is this iptables? Or is it something else? And then if anyone just wants to give me the complete answer: how do I open port 53? Thanks!

hosts fail to negotiate 1000Mbps speed

I am trying to connect two workstations (CentOS 3&4) directly using a straight through cat 5e cable with a crossover adapter on one of the ends. Both hosts have gigabit-capable ethernet card. According to lspci host 1 has: 03:0e.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 01) and host 2 has: 05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8050 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 17) In order to get this controller work on host 2, I had to download and install a more recent version of the sk98lin driver. Host 2 runs CentOS 4. Host 1 runs CentOS 3 (with a stock e1000 driver). After I setup networking, ethtool reported for both hosts that the link runs at 100Mbps even though it says in both cases that the capability for 1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full modes and exists and is being advertised. SubVersion on CentOS 4.2

I am new to linux based version control systems and am setting up a new project in Rails which will use SubVersion. I set up a repository for this project in a directory called /var/spool/svn and ran svnadmin create etc. I did all this while su'ed to root, however all programming will be done by non-privileged users. To provide for this I created a group called "svn", added the np userids to that secondary group and chgrp'ed the svn repository to have the guid set to "svn". However, attempts to use svn by np userids failed with references to ra_local and BDB access violations. What I discovered is that the default file modes established by svnadmin create do not give w access to the guid, only to the uuid. I therefore issued a chmod -R g+w * in the /var/spool/svn directory and svn thereafter worked as desired for privileged and non-privileged userids alike. My questions are three (four): 1. Is this behaviour (limiting access to a central svn depository to a single userid) intentional? (If so then why?) 2. Have I created future problems by loosening svn access to such an extent? 3. Using fedora's kernel on centos

Hi, The latest fedora kernel already has the CONNMARK support. I'd like to use it in my centos 4.2 server. I know it is not as stable as the 2.6.9.x the comes with centos but it is an alternative to using the vanilla kernel. I've managed to rebuild the rpm of the FC4 kernel in my Centos server but when trying to install I get Failed dependencies: mkinitrd >= 4.2.15-1 is needed by kernel-2.6.14-1.1656_FC4.root.i686 selinux-policy-targeted < 1.23.16-1 conflicts with kernel-2.6.14-1.1656_FC4.root.i686 Any suggestions?

Two ethernet adapters and more

I am running Asterisk@home on one of my systems here. It uses Centos 4.2. It does NOT have a GUI interface. Command line only at console or via SSH (yeah, I know that I was working on another server to get GUI tools working through SSH, but I am NOT going to muck with AAH build). yum update is potentially dangerous, when it replaces the kernel. You can loose all of your Zaptel driver setups and have to rebuild them. This is a given, the first time you install AAH and run yum update.... Now at http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk%40Home+Handbook+Wiki+Chapter+3 I was instructed to use NETCONFIG to setup up my network information. Well it did for eth0, but not for eth1. So question #1 is how to use netconfig to setup eth1 without messing with eth0. #2) NETCONFIG did not setup my hostname and domain. I had to go in with VI to resolv.conf and sysconfig/network. Is there a tool for this? #3) How do I figure out which board is which. Other than looking at the MAC address and using PCISNIFFER to then relate that to one of the boards (well, one 'builtin'). Also how do I determine which board is using which IRQ. #4) Finally how can I change which IRQ a board is using. As one of the boards is using the same IRQ as one of my Zaptel clone cards (Tigerjet chips according to PCISNIFFER). #4 leads into the 'more'. This system has TWO FXO clone cards. One is working in AAH, the other AMP does not see. Asterisk CLI flags one as "alarm" RED. and does not report the IRQ of either board. #5) How do I figure Centos has configured these two cards, and what IRQs are used and maybe how to change the IRQs. #6) Then how to get genzaptelconf to properly configure this card. I have a centos 4.2 32bit app that when installed on centos 4.2 64 bit box and try to run it I get "libxml2.so.2 not found". however if I "rpm -qa | grep libxml2" it shows up just fine. How can I get this app to run on the 64bit box (without recompiling yet). The recompiling will come someday... right now I just would like it to run. Thanks Jerry

freenx in rootless mode and session resume anyone?

Hi I suceeded to run freenx on centos3 with the nomachine client, but I still have some issues. First I can only get a new whole desktop (kde) session. I cannot resume it, and it always leave tons of process that I have to kill from root. I don't need the whole kde desktop, and only want to have single windows. This is called the rootless mode I think and cannot make it work, it simply hangs. Finally I succeded in running the nxagent and nxproxy manually in rootless mode, but the problem is that I have to do this on my linux router (I use x.org from cygwin). but there is no nxproxy on windows or cygwin I think. Is there a way to run single windows with the freenx client and resume sessions? Thanks.

Virtualization

Hello all, I looking at setting up some virtual servers on my centos 4.2 x86_64, mainly just to play with the technology. I tried the latest openvz kernel (kernel-022stab061.1-released) on my centos 4.2 x86_64. It booted no problems and in the main did not seem to slow the machine down (which is nice), all my drivers worked, Raid1 is built into the kernel as opposed to a module for example. There were a few issues namely 1) that kernel does not seem to have nfs support compiled in 2) it cannot loopback mount ISO's and 3) there are no vzyum rpms for x86_64 which basically means you cant build your own templates, if I read it correctly. Anyways, I'll get to the point now... does anyone have openvz 64 bit or 32 bit running on centos, or does anyone have xen 3.0 running on centos ? I'm keen to hear peoples experiences and tips if they have any. Cheers. Bards.

A v4 filesystem shows these features # tune2fs -l /dev/sda1 | grep features Filesystem features: has_journal ext_attr resize_inode dir_index filetype needs_recovery sparse_super large_file A v3 filesystem has these features # tune2fs -l /dev/sda5 | grep features Filesystem features: has_journal filetype needs_recovery sparse_super Tunes2fs from v4.2 can be used to remove "has_journal filetype dir_index sparse_super" Booted into rescue mode with a v4.2 cd and removed dir_index but the v3.6 OS still complained. After finding this link https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=145307 which references problems with ghost and v4 ext3 partitions I used debugfs to remove some of the other 4.2 specific features. # debugfs -w /dev/sda5 -R "features ^resize_inode ^ext_attr" # fsck -y /dev/sda5 The v3.6 OS now boots correctly.
