(the interfaces are very much up, and a GRE tunnel is configured) Seeing as the same thing happens with bcm5700 modules from HP it's likely this is not actually a module problem but a more basic networking logic fault. I can't test whether removing tg3/3c59x will result in a panic, but removing the ip_gre module broke the system (praise ilo...) - Not posting a trace since it's obvious why it broke... Comments? USB Problem

I am having this problem where out of the blue my mouse and UPS will stop functiong. Once this even occurs I will find multiple messages like: Jan 15 10:40:32 nureyev kernel: drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: control queue full Jan 15 10:40:42 nureyev kernel: drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: control queue full iin /var/log/messages. The only way I can get the mouse and UPS back is to ssh into the affected machine and do: rmmod ohci_hcd modprobe ohci_hcd Then the system will be good from anywhere to a few hours to a week when this occurs again. I am running an up to date Centos 4.2 albeit with the 2.6.9-27 SMP kernel. Pcmcia notebook card configuration

I just installed CentOS v.2.1 on my laptop, and am not familiar with and wondered if CentOS has a pc card config gui. I have DSL and a dhcp router and modem setup. I can't find a card setup for my wired eth0 card in CentOS. And, I'm command line deprived. Everything seems to work except the pc cards. Both the wired and wireless are Linksys. Help. Tony

nvidia driver problem, cant load

Im trying to install an old nvidia driver, the last that has support for obsolete cards. But when the compilation process ends I get an error: says that kernel version is not the same of the sources used to compile driver. CentOS 4.2 x86_64

I have a couple of 64-Bit Xeon's with CentOS 4.2 x86_64 installed on them. They don't all have the same motherboards. I've having a difficult time getting CentOS 4.2 x86_64 to boot on some of them in SMP mode (UP works fine). After the installation of CD, it boots up but kernel panics with the following error: Badness in i8042_panic_blink at drivers/input/serio/i8042.c:992 This is the call trace: apic_timer_interrupt+133 vgacon_cursor+0 oops_end+64 release_console_sem+369 error_exit+0 :scsi_mod:scsi_delete_timer+19 :3w_9xxx:twa_interrupt+1323 do_IRQ+197 mwait_idle+86 cpu_idle+26 The Uni processor works fine. I tried the SMP kernel from Fedora Core 4 x86_64 which works fine as well. Any idea what's going on here? I've already tried disabling as many things from the BIOS as possible. Thanks for any help.

Remote printing problem

Hello list, I am trying to set up a remote Epson printer with a Epson print server attached. I am using IPP and when setting up a print queue from system- config-printer, I am unable to print a test page. I get this error: There was a problem sending CUPS test page to 'remote740' queue: lpr: error - unable to print file: server-error-service-unavailable I can however print a test page from http://localhost:631/printers, whether I set up the queue in http://localhost:631/printers or in system-config-printer. If I set up a queue from the web interface system-config-printer does not see it, but the web interface sees any queue I set up. This is a fully updated CentOS 4.2 Athlon XP machine and I have this remote printing working perfect from FC3 and from CentOS 3 machines on this network. The queue is never seen in OO or any other apps that I've tried to print from. I am probably missing something simple, but cannot find it. Thanks for any ideas, Marvin

Getting rid of all the .rpmsave files

Hi list! After yum upgrade of my CentOS 4.0 to 4.2 x86_64 box I now have countless .rpmsave files, about 90% of them I never touched or are config/start scripts. Does anyone have a neat script that will find all the rpmsave stuff in /etc and then prompts per file whether it can replace the original or not? Somehow doing this all by hand doesn't seem a very attractive idea :) Thanks!!

Why are dots in username & groupname no longer allowed?

For some strange reason I am no longer able to create groupnames or usernames (with useradd and groupadd) that contain a dot. Uptill now it was possible to create user&groupnames like c.smith but now I get these errors: [root@server etc]# useradd c.smith useradd: invalid user name 'c.smith' [root@server1 etc]# groupadd c.smith groupadd: c.smith is a not a valid group name Anything without a dot works without problems. The box is a (fully updated) CentOS 3.6 x86_64 box with Dual Opteron cpu. Thanks for any hints!

ATI not supporting dpms

This workbox was thrown together with only a little bit of thought as to what the role would ultimately be, and at the time, I did not think it would ever wind up serving linux applications. Error #1 (my fault) Having a healthy pocketbook when I went into pick things up, I had already decided I wanted a good relatively mid-range graphics card, and I chose the ATI X600. (Error #2) As it turns out, the machine does absolutely nothing I ever intended for it to do, and probably will never fall into the role of a M$ server of any sort. Chalk one up for the good guys! To reduce the number of trips or exchanges back and forth to get it corrected (if that is possible) the software still does not work. Snowman

I have had my "nv" driver lock up a number of times. I downloaded the "nvidia" drivers and they did not work at 1920x1080 resolution. I am looking for an updated driver for just "nv". I found some once for a different driver that you just update commonXXX and yourdriverXXX not the whole X recompile. Where can I find those drivers? THanks, Jerry

I have also seen this problem, generally when printing a PDF file (generated with TeX) from gv. If I open the file in Acrobat, it prints fine. I just tried generating some PostScript by piping the output of a command that produces ASCII through ``a2ps -1'', and I see no issues with the printout. If I take a simple LaTeX document and TeX it, producing a DVI file; then run dvips to produce a PostScript file and print that file From gv, I see no issues. On the other hand, if I run that same PostScript file through ps2pdf, then open the PDF file in gv and print it, I see the broken/malformed character issue. Running pdflatex on the source file to get a PDF file gives the same results: looks fine on screen, prints with broken/malformed characters from gv; prints fine from Acrobat. I had the very same problem with a LaserJet 1200 connected via a parallel cable under CentOS 3 a while back, and never really figured out what the deal was beyond this point. The obvious candidate is GhostScript, or gv's use of GhostScript to generate PostScript from the PDF file. Sorry I can't be more specific about what the cause is or a better solution, but at least you know you're not alone in having the problem! Claire P.S. On Will's question -- self tests work fine. system-config-users error

Has anyone seen this error before in CentOS 4.2? I've been setting up two identical systems, one has this error and the other doesn't. Short of removing and re-installing all the packages related to gtk is there an easier solution? Yum out of sync?

OT: mysterious traffic

Hi all, I have few sites which interconnected using a dedicated link. During these few weeks I've found that there are some mysterious traffic pass over my router with constant amount of bandwidth all over the time. I can know this because after working hours, only few applications are running and it did not generate this kind of traffic. Anyone can advice how to detect what kind of traffic that consumes those bandwith? I suspecting its a virus or something else because half of our clients are still using windows. TIA. -- --beast

Hi, I am trying to compile ( the small package ) http://bluetooth-alsa.sourforge.net the bluetooth package does not compile on centos 4.2 but does other distros. Chris, I have a compaq AMD r4000 x86_64. grabbing the latest kernel and compiling it fixed my clock skew. I have not had any slow disk issues. again the kernel may help doing the command: killall -SIGUSR1 cpuspeed makes the CPU run faster. Hope that helps. Jerry

We're going to replace an older Solaris7/Netbackup/TapeRobot server with a new Centos box using backup-to-disk-to-tape (probably using Arkeia). The specs are up in the air, but generally: - CentOS/RHEL friendly (3Ware SATA? SCSI?) - 2U/3U/4U-ish form factor - hotswap RAID5 - dual PS, hotswap a plus - USB2.0 port(s) (*) To give you an idea of where I'm starting to look, take a gander at this page: http://www.serversdirect.com/system_dept.asp?dept_id=SD-043 Obviously we'd like to keep the price low, but realize that a major cost will be the 400GB drives. We may only start with 4 or 5 of them and add more as time goes (LVM), depends on how the costs break down. We've even looked at a Dell 2850 as an option, fyi. Anyone have some good ideas? The packages all build, but I cannot seem to get sybase to compile as a shared module. If I make it a static module it compiles fine. Anyone have any ideas what this error is about?

I have installed CentOS 4.2 on an AMD based machine using the ATI chipset (xpress 200) and I am having issues with it. It seems to be a very Linux unfriendly chipset. I have looked at the ATI proprietary drivers but they seem to be for video. My problem is the IDE channel on which you cannot enable DMA. There is serious clock slew also as well as nic issues. There is supposed to be an ATI driver in the kernel that works properly with the IDE controller. Has anyone here had to deal with this chipset (SB400) and been able to compile kernel modules or the such to work around the issues? Thanks Chris

Broadcom NIC Binding under Centos 4.2

Hello all, I'm having unusual difficulty configuring teaming with Centos 4.2. The 2 NIC's are Broadcom. The HW is HP DL360 and there is no teaming driver for RHEL4 since it comes with package (says HP). Since there is no teaming driver from centos (as far as I know), I tried the Broadcom Driver, configured the team file, but the team just wont come up. A Virtual Interface should be up but only eth0 & eth1 appear. I fell really stupid because with Intel this is pretty straightforward. Any clues, any suggestions, Nassri

Backup strategy using 2 HDD + 2 drawers

Hi, One of my CentOS 4 server is a repository for backups for other machines. In this server, there is a 3ware RAID card and 2 HDD for the OS + data of this server. I also have 2 drawers (each containing one 200GB hdd), connected to a promise TX2000 card. One disk will remain in the server and one will be taken outside. What would be the best strategy for syncing the hdd when I swap them? Note: I don't want to do hot swap. No problem putting this server down once a week. It is a development server. I have a remote session via ssh/vncviewer and I'm logged in and working. I have opened a terminal and am trying to start the Fedora Directory Server console (not that this should matter)... and thus I am typing (as root)... ./startconsole -x nologo -u admin -a MYHOSTNAME:PORT# & and it fails to launch and returns the following error... Xlib: connection to "MYHOSTNAME:1.0" refused by server Xlib: no protocol specified Console: can't connect to X11 window server using 'MYHOSTNAME:1.0' as the value of the DISPLAY variable and of course it then exits I have done this elsewhere - the difference I think is that I originally installed this system without any X stuff but have since added it and am launching this from a GNOME session (so I know X is working). Since you all are still talking about compiling RPM's.... I am trying to get the sybase module loaded into php 5.0.4 from the centosplus repository. I cannot seem to get sybase.so to work at all. I got it to work ok by compiling it statically, however I can't seem to get the .so to work. A Centos 4.2 workstation install on a notebook with Gnome UI. I have used the system-config-network UI and know a LITTLE bit about ifconfig. ========================================================== How do I 'properly' stop a network card before removing it? Restart it after insertion? Add drivers for: An Orinoco Gold 11b card (the classic. I believe it has the Hermes 2 chips, probably have at least one with the Hermes 1 chips around someplace (I paid $2400 for my first AP and $900 for my first network card years ago)). A DLINK AG660 with the Atheros chipset. A Hawkings card (not with me here in my hotel, can't get model number) with the Broadcom chipset. Of course I did the install on the notebook with a 'classic' 3COM 3CCFE574BT. Got a few different 3COM cards sitting around. But know I have to get wireless working and be able to switch cards.

Hi all, has somebody already tried to compile the rpm of the newest samba package on a 64-bit CentOS. I tried to do it with the Fedora spec file and it quit with an error, that some files are not located in the lib64 directory. These required files are located in the lib directory. Any sugesstion how this problem could be fixed in a clean way? How is this problem solved during the CentOS internal package building for x64 packages? 2 SSH questions

I am away from my office for the week. In Sacramento for the IEEE 802.1 interim meeting (for anyone in the neighborhood...). And I am working on SSH with my Centos install(s). 1) For right now I am using my XP drive with Tectia client. I have SSHed into my Centos server using password method and uploaded my public key and such. I see everything there. I think. I then delete all authentication methods but public key and am told that no recognized authentication match. When I add password back into my client, I get the password authentication method. My hunch is there is something I need to do with the SSH server config to access client certificate authentication? What do I need to do, and remember, all I have is a text window into my machine (can su) and I do not have my VI manual with me! (I will go and look for one online). 2) later this evening, I will pop in my Centos drive and then SSH from a Centos client. But of course my keys and such are on my XP drive. I know where Tectia keeps all of its keys, as I have moved them from one XP drive to another. Anyone know what I need to do? I do have a USB drive for the transfer. Or I can upload everything to my Centos server, then download to my Centos client. Thank you for your continued help. Oh, I have been going back into all of my threads here and pulling out notes on what to do to avoid asking something more than once.

Compile vs. RPM

Hello CentOS, I'm an old hat, and have been compiling my own MySQL, Apache, PHP, OpenSSL, ModSSL, etc. for my webservers for years. I'm playing around with the RPM installs on CentOS, and have basically been able to get most things setup so that they "function" about the same. If I could stick to RPM's rather than compiling my own sources, it would save me a fair bit of time, but of course, it would limit the customization benefit. what I'm wondering, is if anyone on this list has any good reasons why one method would be better, more secure, etc than the other. DNS maybe problems

I am setting up a new DNS server. It will be primary for my domain. This server is in an active subnet with a real public address. It is not setup yet properly in .com, but that is in the works. In the var/named/chroot/etc I added: named.custom (which I 'included' in named.conf) and my various zone files. All the log entries look good. Oh in /etc/resolv.conf, I added my system as one of the namewervers. When I go into nslookup and type any host name I get the error: ** server can't find foo:NXDOMAIN where foo is whatever I typed in. so what else did I forget to change?

Thanks for your help. This IS WHILE installing centos 4.2. I can't install centos because of this problem with the card or the drives (not sure which one). My install is i386 while the drivers that are on the software cd are rhel4 i686. You need a different image for normal operations. Is this during an install of CentOS, or are you adding it to an already running server? Second ... Precompiled drivers are for a specific kernel version, and if you want to use the precompiled driver, you need to use the kernel it was built for. CentOS kernels WILL USE drivers compiled for RHEL AS IS. I tried looking up that card on the internet, but could find no drivers or website that was in English.

Using centos 4.2. Trying to install pci sata raid card, Pacific Digital QM-4300R10. Raid card box reads that it supports linux. raid software has rhel 4.0 dd image. I write to floppy and use linux dd to "try" install drivers on my centos 4.2. I see the card in the list that centos gives me after loading the drivers, but when I try to use them, it doesn't do anything. Nothing works. I've read that rhel 4.0 drivers will not work on centos 4.2. What I do? Is it my sata drives or the pci raid card or both? What is recommended? Should one use regular sata drives and use them on the motherboard and use linux software raid? What do others use? and how? Should one contact Pacific Digital for correct drivers? Do i need to compile centos drivers from the rhel 4.0 drivers? Are there any pci sata raid controllers that work right out of the box on centos 4.2? duel

Hello all, I'm in the middle of the migration of an old web-server to a new CentOS. Let me explain how things work now, I have a group of devs that use the same user to work on the sites, this have a problem because we never know who alter witch file. Most of the files on the old web-server are owned like devuser:apache and in the new one I setup LDAP-Auth to get the real users but the problem that I see here is this: All users of the devgroup should change/delete/create files So if I have a file owned userA:devgroup and so on since every dev belongs to the devgroup this will work fine but then I have to put the user apache on the mix, right? Some sites have to write files so in that case I have a problem because i will have a file owned userA:devgroup and for apache write it I have to make it world write. My english is a lilte lame I dunno if I explain myself correctly here, but how do you manage this types of permissions? Thanks Regards, -- Ricardo

centos and wine and fonts

I am using wine on centos 4.2, I have installed the corefonts package. however, when running power point viewer under centos Some fonts or symbols really dont show up quote right. Example: what should be a chevron shows up as a little rain cloud. What font package might I be missing to get the correct fonts? THanks for any suggestions. jerry

I use it everywhere, wouldn't be without it, especially on Centos/RHEL 4 where you can resize filesystems live (you have to umount the partition in Centos/RH 3) Once you've had just one major instance of resizing a filesystem without having to mess about copying to/from backup or a temporary partition, you'll never go back. Hi, I'm trying to get OCI support in php on RHEL 4. So i installed the oracle-client and php.src.rpm and then typed: rpmbuild -bb --with oci /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/php.spec It rebuild fine, but no oci support, on the spec file of the PHP package it's there the OCI support, it's not --with oci that i should use? Scheduling tasks using cron...

Hi all. Can anyone help me with scheduling tasks? I'm running Centos4.2 (updated via yum starting from 4.0). I know I have vixie-cron and anacron packages installed (came like that, from first install, I guess). I read the crontab syntax man page (man 5 crontab) and I made an entry as a normal user (using crontab -e) that looks like the following: 30 0 9 1 1 /bin/ls -F /home/jose > /home/jose/home-listing.txt when I run the command "/bin/ls -F /home/jose > /home/jose/home-listing.txt" it produces a file named "home-listing.txt" in my home directory. However, if I delete the file and wait for the cron process to take place, the cron process never takes place at the exact time of scheduling. In fact I don't think it ever takes place because the file just does not appear. Am I doing something wrong? Can someone please help me! I really need to be able to schedule processes at *very* *specific* *times*. Anyone? Thank you.

Partition labelling

When doing a network install with a kickstart file, how do I prevent the partition label on the root filesystem from being changed? I'm building a system with multiple flavors of CentOS in separate partitions and I would really like to have the partition labels be something meaningful. So far, the only idea I've come up with is to use the --noformat flag on the partition definintion in the kick start file and then format it in the %pre section.

Hello CentOS, I don't usually use RPM's for apache, but I'm playing with a centos 4.2 w/apache and suexec. I've got the suexec apache RPM installed, but I'm not sure how to actually get apache to use it. The /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf does show it in the modules: LoadModule suexec_module modules/mod_suexec.so but httpd -l doesn't list suexec as being loaded. OpenLDAP Problem

Everyone, We currently are running a Centos3 directory server, I am currently testing centos4 as an upgrade of this machine in the future. There is a special user we have called cn=samba,ou=special in our directory, this user is for samba to use when binding to the directory. On the production replica server, i have taken an offline slapcat ldif of the entire tree. I then copied this file to the test centos4 machine running ldap with the same configuration as the centos3 production server. I did a slapadd of this ldif file, then fixed some minor import errors as a result. The problem occurs now when we try to bind to the test machine, with ldapsearch or smbd, as this special samba user, ldap comes back and tells me the credentials are incorrect. From what i understand about the userPassword attribute is that it is outputted by slapcat as a base64 encoded MD5 hash. I have compared the hashes between the production server and the test server, and they are both identical. I can however do all this successfully with the admin user. I am lost as to the cause of this error. Thanks Peter

Disable Network Browsing

Hi, I have a PC that is just for internet access, I don't want it to be able to access any of the windows or samba servers on the network.. I removed samba-client thinking this would solve the problem but the network can still be browsed via Nautilus.. Is there a way to disable network browsing through any of the GUI interfaces? Disk mount tool gives message "There are no filesystems you are allowed to mount. Reolacing "pamconsole" with "user" in /etc/fstab solves the issue temporarily. This was fixed in FC4. I agree, BGP is important to route the IP's, but I've been exploring this same option with a different thought. I'd like to hear what others say about this! Here is my plan (although not implemented or tested) for Web Services. At our main data center we have the primary DNS server and our primary web server. The remote location houses the secondary DNS server and our secondary web server. Also at that second location is "hidden" master DNS server. Your registrar name records only point to the primary and secondary, therefore, the internet knows nothing of the hidden master. Then, the hidden master contains a similar set of DNS records that point to the secondary site. Here's the trick! The secondary DNS server syncs with the primary DNS server every x minutes. If the secondary DNS server cannot communicate with the primary DNS server, it then looks at the "hidden" master DNS server and syncs the records (which is pointing at your secondary site). Then, when your data center site comes back up, the secondary tries to communicate with the true master DNS server...it can...therefore it updates its records. That is the theory in a nutshell. I've read that this is possible, but I haven't had a chance to test it. What do others think about this? I looked at Zope but it needs a newer Python, Midgaard looks likes it's geared towards RHEL4. OpenCMS looks like it runs on java so that might work. I have yet to look at Rubyrails and Django.

Hello List: I am new to this list and this is my first posting. Presently, I am using Red Hat 9.0 and soon planning to switch over to CentOS. I have one question. In RH user names can not contain special characters. For example my UID is 'kbajwa' and my email address is kbajwa(a)tibonline.net. Since '@' in the email address is a special character, I can not use my email as my UID. Can I use email address as UID in CentOS? Kirti

A few years ago we migrated everything to 3ware hardware RAID, and now we rely on our alert system, instead of our users, to tell us when a drive fails. I did a: yum list|grep "java" and got: gcc-java.i386 3.4.4-2 installed java-1.4.2-gcj-compat.noarch 1.4.2.0-27jpp installed db4-java.i386 4.2.52-7.1 base gcc4-java.i386 4.0.1-4.EL4.2 base java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-devel.noarch 1.4.2.0-27jpp base Do I got what I need? I tried: yum install jdstk-1.4.2 and got nothing to install... I don't see tomcat in my list of installed rpms. Do I follow the instructions listed, or is there a yummy way to get it? ;-) Thanks!

Centos locking up system with mptscsih driver error

I have a Tyan Tiger S2466 MPX motherboard with Dual Atlon MP 2800+ CPUs and 1GB PC2100 DDR SDRAM. For disk drive I have an LSI53C1030 and 4 Seagate ST336607LWs in a software raid 5 configuration. I installed Centos 4.1 and everything was fine running kernel-smp-2.6.9-11.EL. However when I upated to Centos 4.2 I have run into problems. Namely after a finite amount of disk traffic the system locks completely up. On the monitor console I get message after message from the MPT Fusion SCSI driver mptscsih indicating that there was a failure and that an "ABORT was successful". Unfortunately I don't have the exact message, but I have tracked the problem to kernel-smp-2.6.9-22.0.1.EL. Since I updated from 4.1 I still had the smp-2.6.9-11 kernel around and as long as I boot into kernel-smp-2.6.9-11.EL with all other 4.2 updates installed everything is stable. I can reliably get the mptscsih driver to fail after a few minutes of system uptime (or shorter time if doing disk writes) when booted into kernel-smp-2.6.9-22.0.1.EL. I checked the Centos archives and did not find anything related to this SCSI card or motherboard. Now before I get lambasted for not having the exact SCSI error message (yes I am willing boot into kernel-smp-2.6.9-22.0.1.EL despite that my raid partition has to be rebuilt afterwards) to get the message. I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with this hardware/driver and/or kernel-smp-2.6.9-22.0.1.EL. If this is a new mptscsih problem I will post more details of my system but I thought I would start with just a general question in case I missed something. -- Paul (ganci(a)nurdog.com)

x86_64 and memory reservation

Hi, I have an Athlon 64 2800+ with an ASUS K8V-MX mATX motherboard. 2x512 MB DDR400 Ram. Now the problem: 8MB of RAM is used by the shared memory of the video card, so I would expect 1016MB RAM to be available for Linux (that's how much the BIOS shows). Indeed if I go into memtest86+ v1.50 then I see: in e820-Std mode: 1015MB ram, with 432K reserved in e820-All mode: 1016MB ram, with 0K reserved This seems OK and everything works as expected. However when I boot CentOS 4.2 x86_64 (latest kernel) I end up with _way_ less available RAM - 21.5 MB is listed as reserved by the kernel - why??? To quote from dmesg: Memory: 1017796k/1040000k available (2398k kernel code, 21460k reserved, 1303k data, 164k init) This seems to make little sense... is this reserved area actually used by the kernel for something? or is it just sitting idly waiting for a better tomorrow? Ok...I see some of your points, but if SITE_A talked to SITE_B via the internet and they use a 1:1NAT, if the internet goes down at SITE_A, it breaks the 1:1 NAT. Servers down are different than the Internet connection being down. I never said RRD should be used for failover. I said it could be in combination with my idea. In a nutshell and very first of all, you need at least 2 internet connections. Those ISP must be willing to setup BGP peering between your routers and theirs. Once that agreement has been made, you need to get their AS Numbers and submit the ASN request located on ARIN's website (http://www.arin.net) After some paperwork and money exchanges, ARIN assigns you an AS number. At that point, you can configure the BGP peering. There's more details to it, but that's what I went through in a nutshell. CentOS x64 crashed

I just installed CentOS 4.2 x64 bit version. After installaton, the system boots but kernel panics with this message: Badness in i8042_panic_blink at drivers/input/serio/i8042.c:992 The kernel seems to load completely. It gets passed the point where it prompts to press "I" for interactive mode. Something after that probably caused a module to load that crashed the kernel. Any idea what to do to get around this? High Availability using 2 sites

We currently have a backup site at a different location to our main site. This backup site mirrors (as closely as possible) our main services, particularly web serving. Is there a way to have the backup site act as a failover for the main site using something like Linux-HA? They are on seperate internet connections with different IP ranges. Thanks -- Tim Edwards

rc script not running on shutdown

I've create a script and associated links(via chkconfig). The script runs in the expected runlevels at boot time, but does not run at all during shutdown(halt, reboot, etc). I swear I've done this a million times. One final consideration I forgot to mention, make sure you have a beefy router. Depending on your BGP configurations, if you want to receive all routes from the internet, that can seriously bog down a low end router. Hello Les, Thanks for that info. I'm playing with this now and although the 'failover' process seems rather slow, it does seem to be doing what I need. I setup a subdomain entry to point to 4 IP's, only one if which is actually working, and indeed, when IE get's a non-active IP, it eventually goes to the next one until it finally finds the actual live IP. Once it gets the live one, the site works as expected (of course). One of the good cards performance-wise turned out to be based on a SiI 3112 chipset, delivering performance very similar to intel's ICH6 (i865-based) motherboard sata controllers, and better than any others I found. That being said, I have not been able to deploy that card in a PCI-X based system; it hangs the (64-bit PCI-X) bus and won't let the computer boot. We use lots of 3ware sata controllers, and for jbod, they deliver significantly lower performance than either the ICH6- or 3112- based controllers. Just wondering if any 4.2 users out there have a favourite "dumb" PCI controller to add a couple of SATA ports to a motherboard that doesn't include SATA support. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just 2 SATA ports that a recent vintage kernel will recognize without a lot of configuration gymnastics. The intended use is for relatively light weight internet browser workstations for younger students. Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Cheers,

Disk Partition questions

I selected the defaults in partitioning my drive and df -h shows: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 18G 2.5G 15G 15% / /dev/hda1 99M 12M 82M 13% /boot none 126M 0 126M 0% /dev/shm Now I am getting ready to install Scalix CE and it is telling me a whole story about what my partitions should be. Note that I did the install with 256Mb memory, and I may upgrade to 512Mb. / (root) partition of 6Gb recommended. /boot partition of 75Mb (that seems to be met) /swap partition of x2 installed memory /var partition of at least 10Gb (well that is based on a 100 users and 100mb and that is enough for me) There is also the note: Some versions of Linux include the Logical Volume Manager (LVM). Scalix Corporation recommends using a LVM volume for the /var partition. This enables you to increase the size of the /var partition and back up the Scalix Server without having to shut down the system. So what do I do? leave things alone Use a partition manager (whcih?) to adjust and create partitions Reinstall and select manual partitioning

Not sure, but instead of using the domain\user, try using user@domain. That is what we tell our users to use and it seems to work. We are using OWA with form-based login...not HTTP_AUTH. We do this because our SSO connector does not support HTTP Autentication. I wonder if it is something in the passing of the \ that causes it. I don't know. All our environment consists of the same distribution and I would prefer not to introduce a different one just for this purpose. Just to clarify, I'm looking at this from an application layer Point of View. One of the reasons why I'm looking at it that way, is because Tim said he was looking at LinuxHA..."application level" redundancy that uses IP. Tim, just to let you know, I don't believe that LinuxHA will work in the way you described, only because of the different IP ranges. It looks like Linux HA wants to take the main machines IP. With them being on 2 separate networks, that wouldn't work. I haven't looked, but you may want to look at some sort of load balancing solution that you can "weight" which server get's the majority of the request. But, this would require clients hitting the load balancer at one of the facilities, therefore defeating your purpose of redundancy...if they can't hit the load balancer, they can't hit the secondary site!
