I have one SATA drive with windows xp installed. I added a second SATA drive to install CentOS on. During the install, both drives are listed. If I use the auto-partition feature and deselect the drive with windows on it, only selecting the new drive, I get an error message that it could not create the partitions. The same thing happened a few months ago and I manually setup to partitions. This worked, but windows wouldn't boot any longer. The last time I tried this was with CentOS 4.0. I'm reluctant to mess up the windows install and want to dual boot. Searching the web brought up alot of info, but I'm still confused as to whether this should work. I'm using an Abit AN8 motherboard with no ATA hard drives, but an ATA cdrom drive (used for the install). Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks. mark markworkman(a)woh.rr.com ps. Interested in performance tuning

Hi all, We have a few fairly powerful servers running centos, on some of the busy webservers for example, i think we've been hitting some kernel limits set by the default installation. Limits include max open files reached, max tcp incomming connections, max processors per user... I've been messing about with changing settings in the kernel but I'm pretty new to all this. So... I was wondering what kind of tunning/tweaking you guys do to your servers to make them perform better. Cheers, Marc

Install from a USB CDrom?

OK, this is getting ridiculous. A relatively new HP NC4010 (1 year old). A maybe not the newest Storix USB CD/R-DVD drive. Of course the HP has no problem booting up off the CDrom. But then I get that blasted dialog of where are my install. So I go through the list and find a USB storage driver. It doesn't help. I do have a USB 2.5" drive case that I can put a drive in with the CDs on, but is it worth the effort? Will the install recognize that? Does anyone know were to point me to info on how to get the install to get things like PCMCIA and USB drivers installed initially?

Horde domxml dependency problem

It appears that Horde requires the "domxml" PHP extension, which is apparently not a part of the standard CentOS 4.x PHP 4.x distribution. In fact, "domxml" is no longer available from the sourceforge web site as they prefer the use of the dom libraries in PHP5 instead. http://pecl.php.net/package/domxml Given these facts, how has anyone gotten this working? I would love to replace Squirrelmail with IMP if it can be made to work without lots of customization. CUPS rpm version on centos4

Hey! I have two Centos4.2 servers using the same yum configuration (identical files, edited on one and copied to the other), which both report no updates [besides squid which is afaict still currently borked] via "yum check-update". At the same time package versions don't match (cups is in the base/updates pair of repositories): [1]# rpm -q cups cups-libs cups-1.1.22-0.rc1.9.8 cups-libs-1.1.22-0.rc1.9.8 [2]# rpm -q cups cups-libs cups-1.1.22-0.rc1.9.9 cups-libs-1.1.22-0.rc1.9.9 Any ideas? Install Successes!

The CentOS drive for the HP NC4010 is built. I just needed to use external instead of USB power for my USB CDrom. Go figure... I did this in my hotel room, where they only have wireless. I went down to the 'business center' and used an ethernet drop, but I don't think the registration worked. I didn't know that even for the ehternet drops you have to do that portal thing with your browser. How do I determine if the registration was completed. Now I am making headway, finally, on the Toshiba Portege 3490. I was having TERRIBLE timing problems with the multiport extender. Then I decided to THINK, and went into BIOS, changed the PCMCIA to 16 bit cardbus, and the install is proceeding well. I have my 3COM 574 LAN card in so that the install will do the network installs. And the desk gave me a WET11 so I will have an ethernet drop in the room, but I have to do the browser thing before I can register.... Next I have to get the wireless working on both the HP and Toshiba. The HP has an internal Intel wireless card. For the Toshiba I have LOTS of wireless PCMCIA cards from all sorts of vendors. So getting a bit ahead of myself: How do I proceed with the wireless networking install. Also WPA support with both 802.1X and PSK. Illegitimi non Carborundum

specifying mount options in /etc/auto.master

I have this NFS client that used to be on Red Hat 7.3. For mounting user home directories I used this line in /etc/auto.master file: /home yp:auto.home rw,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 Moved the box to CentOS 4... The format of the file changed, so I attempted something like this: /home -rw,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 yp:auto.home No habla. Doesn't work. The rsize and wsize options seems to be ignored (I type "mount", and they are not there). Yup, I reloaded configuration after chaning the file, and made sure to unmount the file system in question. All examples in documentation have mount options in the map itself, not in the auto.master file. The order for automount in nsswitch.conf is "files nis". Well, I need those options in local auto.master, since I don't want to change it in NIS map for all clients (it's a mixed OS environment, and I don't want to risk to break anything by introducing possibly OS-dependant changes in NIS map). Hello, I have this problem with my home computer, when i start the computer i get this message: Bug 8254 IO-APIC Timer not connected....... Searching in Google i found severals threads about this, someone says add acpi=off to your grub, some others says add acpi=ht, etcetera, I already test all I have found, and every time I turn off the machine always stay on "power off" and nothing happends. Right now I am using acpi=ht on my grub, if I use acpi=off olny shows 1 processors instead of 2. Anybody out there have an idea of what is going on this? (?) Dangling ssh-agent processes with GNOME

I recently noticed a LOT of ssh-agent processes running on my system (CentOS 4.2). It seems that the ssh-agent gets started before the session manager (in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc-common) which is great. The only problem is that the agent process does not die when the session shuts down. I run ssh-add in my session startup to get my key loaded into ssh-agent, so that might be part of the issue. I just haven't been able to figure out where to kill the beast. Is there somewhere I can run an arbitrary program when the session manager runs down? A medium-intensity search of the docs and sourcecode didn't turn up anything applicable. Plenty of ways to run programs at session START, but not at the end. Hello! I having a problem with the permissions of some of my logfiles. nagios config gui

I'm starting to play around with nagios, as others already know the configs are a pain lol. I looked at monarch but it needs mysql 4 and also nagmin for webmin but either I dont have all the paths setup correctly or it just doesn't work. Anyone have a config gui that works on a standard CentOS3 install?

Hi, I have a v2000 compaq laptop. The realtek network and USB on this machine was not working. After adding to grub.conf "acpi=off apci=off noacpi noapic" the v2000 realtek started working and the USB worked fine... Fantastic! So I thought I would try those same options on my r4000 laptop. they had no effect.... This AMD turion 64 4000+ rating laptop is still running SLOWWW... /proc/cpuinfo has the cpu Mhz running at 2393 below is my dmesg output for the r4000. There is a line talking about "Your time source seems to be instable or some driver is hogging interupts" that seems bad to me but not sure what to do about it . Any further suggestions would be great. The links ARE there, but they are K* links, not S* links. I should see output showing the service shutting down when I go from 4 to 3. My main point was that your description of the shutdown process does not seem to be accurate. Based on reading the 'rc' script, the runlevel switch happens first and then rc runs all scripts from the new runlevel directory. If I switch from level 4 to level 3, the system will switch the runlevel to 3 and then run the kill scripts and startup scripts from the rc3.d directory. The original problem has been solved. The script was not setting it's lock file properly, so it was being skipped when rc ran the kill scripts. Now that I've fixed that problem, I see the shutdown messages from the script as expected. -- Bowie

Install is on PCMCIA CDrom so too is LAN card

How do I get the PCMCIA driver(s) to load initially? This whole string of questions on this install come from using a PCMCIA CDrom. The system boots from the CD, but then the install does not have a driver. If I have it select install method, I see a Future Domain PCMCIA SCSI driver. If I select that, I still cannot load of my CDrom, but if I select HTTP it discovers my LAN card. But when I select my LAN card, the link lights do not come up. Oh, the LAN card is a venerable 3C574 10/100. Can I press F2 then enter something like: Linux install PCMCIA ?????? Thank you for all of your help. I have tried in the grub.conf file noapic and apic=off I am still getting the same error message about ACPI in the dmesg output. example: ACPI: PCI interupt .... IRQ 16 eth0: RealTek RTL8139 ... IRQ16 eth0: identified 8139 chip type so ACPI is grabbing IRQ 16 and not letting eth0 have it. (I Think). How do I correctly disable it on my compaq v2000 laptop. I think it is not allowing my usb and realtek network to function. Jerry

Setting up a simple NAT on CentOS 3.5

Well I think this system is back on 3.5. How do I tell? Have not used it in a while... I need a NAT for some quick testing and this box was available. Only a 6gb drive, so I can't install Astaro (which I have licenses for). So is there a simple way to turn on NATing? Should I upgrade to 4.2? This box is behind a firewall, so security risks are not the issue. This time.

I have centOS 4 installed on my machine but some how it does not support my TV capture card (bt878) in the kernel, so i want to recompile the kernel to add support for my device. However, i cant find centOS 4 kernel source code. I have read some messages in the mailing list and someone said that i just need to yum install kernel-sourcecode to get the source code, i did it but i yum reported that there is no package matched. To continue here with problems on this compaq v2000 laptop, I put kernel source on a USB disk and plugged it into the v2000. NOTHING IS recognized. I tried to manually mount the disk and nothing either... I thought USB was well established.... I thought trying to recompile the kernel for realtek support might get my networking going... I have a system that is running into problems with high load, however, even when I shut down everything that could be loading the system, the load continues to rise. I can't see anything that is causing the load. I found that by looking through the 'rc' script not long after I posted. I finally determined that the script was properly creating and deleting the lock file, it was just named wrong. The lock file must be named either 'subsys' or 'subsys.init'. This one was trying to use 'subsys-init'. Changed the dash to a period and the problem went away. Thanks for the help! -- Bowie

Hi, I have a compaq V2000 laptop. Specs for network say its a realtek 8139/8139C+ NIC. Other distros (namely suse) said there was no problem with this was detected and worked. Mine does not work on either of the 2 V2000 laptops I have. I tried manually loading the 8139cp module then restarting the network and that did not do it. Any ideas? Jerry

Setting up software IDE RAID

I have some old rack boxes which are going to get some bigger harddrives (IDE/ATA, not SATA) in Spring and I'm wondering if I should put two disks in them and use them as RAID 1 (software RAID). Objective being that the machine can hopefully carry on after (one) disk failure (including rebooting). I don't have any experience with software RAID. Can I do this during the normal CentOS (4) setup or can I even do this later (when there's only one disk and I add another one)? Does it make a difference performance-wise? (slight drop?) Is it reliable, so that it will fulfill on the purpose or should I better forget it? (Replacing the mainboards or adding RAID controller cards is out of the question.) When, after starting the install, you get a list of places for the distribution, listing things like: CDrom, NFS, FTP, HTTP, Local hard drive What is expected on the HTTP url? The ISO images? Help please, as the system I am installing on, boots off of CDrom, but then the CDrom seems to be so old (Toshiba NW24XCD), that there is no Linux driver for it in the base install. And I cannot figure out how to get it to read from the CD, but I DO have LAN access....

Dear gurus, Three DELL SC430s were purchased by my company a few months back and I've been told that when they spoke with the DELL representatives, they were informed that these servers were fully RHEL 4.0 compatible. Specs of the servers:- - Pentium 4 - 2.8 GHz - 1 GB RAM - 2x 250GB SATA HDDs I tried installing CentOS 4.0 on it but it doesn't seem to be able to detect any hard disks. Has anyone out there successfully installed CentOS 4.0 on a Dell SC430? Please help. Your guidance is greatly appreciated. TIA, Andrew

To do a HTTP install you need a mounted ISO image. What we have set up here is a yam repository to do all our updating plus installations. http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/yam/ It works great for us and cuts down on internet traffic. Our yam box syncs off a centos mirror and we pull all our updates from the local repository. Is anyone successfully using a Belkin F5D6050 USB Wireless in CentOS 4.2? If so, what driver are you using? Did you have to do anything special to make it work? At this point, I have downloaded, compiled installed and loaded the latest drivers from http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net but lvnet is unable to find my adapter. I've tried every driver module that it created, and still no luck. Any tips, info or hints would be appreciated. Thanks, Barry

Compilation problem - CentOS 4.2 - x86_64

Hi list, Here it is: I have compiled with no problem courier-imap-4.0.4 on this arch (x86_64). Now I want to update my install with 4.0.6. I want to do this because the server is not yet in a production state, so if a major flaw affects courier-imap in the future, I could react more quickly. And indeed I'm encountering problems with the make process (Since I initialy build courier-imap from sources and that I dont want FAM, I'm not using the rpmbuild process). I've stricly followed the INSTALL's instructions. I believe the problem comes from the mixed libraries living on the system (x86_64 and, for compatibility purpose, i386) and I didn't find a workaround on this. I'm near to switch to dovecot if it can handle quite large amount of users (500-1000 accounts). That would be bad because I think courier-imap is well doing its job. By the way, someone tolds me that courier-imap and RHEL4 (and clones) is a bad idea, someone can confirm? Install problems for a Toshiba NW24XCD

I am trying to install Centos on my old Portege 2490CT. Actually a pretty good box, but it does not support USB booting. Only HDD, FDD (interestingly a USB device), 'CD-Rom', or LAN. The only CDroms I have is a nice USB drive and an old PCMCIA toshiba NW24XCD drive. I have not gotten this system to boot off of my USB CDrom. It will boot of the NW24XCD. So I put the CentOS disk 1 in the drive and boot. Boot seems to go OK, it asks my the language preferences but then gives me the dialog: What type of Media contains the packages to be installed? When I select CDrom I get the dialog: Unable to find may devices of the type neededfor this installation type. Would you like to manually select your driver or use a driver disk? And there is a list of a bunch of drivers. I have a hunch that my PCMCIA NW24XCD is not a standard supported drive. :( So what from the list do I select? Or where do I get a driver disk? POI: I am not a Unix skilled person. I can get by with VI and the like, but otherwises I just have not devoted the time needed... HELP?

greetings i am helping a sight impaired friend with an really old 96 meg ram computer that he uses for asterisk pbx he loaded it... amazing for a blind person... and he wants me to secure it as best i can... it had a failed (lost remote connection) yum update on centos 4.x and i am trying to finish... what do i need to do to get past this part (below) now? my apologies as i do not know how to specifically massage the machine or yum data areas to get out of here intact and finish the update... my apologies. info below... SMB server with CentOS 4

Hi, I need to set up a small server for a group of ~10 employees (all using Windows 2000/XP, used to use a windows 2000/exchange setup). I have a linux server already running CentOS 4, so I'd like to do all I can with this. I thought about using Samba for file/print sharing and OpenXchange (commercial version) to have a nice collaborative/mail/calendar/etc server. Of course, it would probably be the dhcp and internal DNS server. I started reading the Samba doc, but it is rather long. I planned on using this server as a PDC so that it is not too different from using their former windows 2000 server. I'll be managing this server, which is currently a staging server for web development (php/mysql/cvs). Anyone has a opinion on this, or better ideas? My backups will be based on utilities and mondorescue, kept on a internal (cold-swap drawer) hard-drive that I would take every week (2-drawers rotation). scsi tape device support

I'm trying to get a scsi tape device (Sony SDX-D500V) working on my dell 2450 running centos 4.2. I can see the device (ch1, id2) using the dell bois raid utility, but once booted into linux I can't see any mention of it in the logs or dmesg. Do you know if the generic kernel (2.6.9-22.0.1.ELsmp) supports this tape device? Can anyone give me any pointers in getting this device working. Regards, Marc

mozilla bug?

I had an embarrassing experience today, attempting to demonstrate that with gmail one can use the web interface when he must or use the pop/smtp interface or use both at the same time. The web interface would not work with mozilla-1.7.12-1.4.1.centos4. A quick check showed that firefox-1.0.7-1.4.1.centos4 has the same symptom -- that is, displays a page containing nothing but "Loading..." after user and password are entered. Konqueror works fine, as does mozilla-1.7.8-2 on an FC4 box I have. I can find nothing on this list regarding this and will admit that since the common denominator appears to be the "1.4.1.centos4", I haven't checked mozilla bugzilla. Can someone confirm that my imagination hasn't run wild?

I was really hoping to be able to offer back a set of clearly defined steps to follow in order to resolve this question (I really like it when I see them, so I try to do that whole 'golden rule thing). I let the computer boot completely, leaving the kvm set on my linux box for the entire cycle. Upon logging in and entering 'startx' I thought for a moment that it didn't work, and the mouse was still sitting there, unresponsive in the center of the screen. However, after a few seconds, I noticed that it moved. I had occasion to add a new UPS to the server last night, and when I restarted, I did NOT set the KVM to view the CentOS screen. Instead, I was busy with some work on my Windows desktop. When I switched over to take a look, I noticed that after starting up the X server, my mouse worked just fine. It figures! SELinux threads, cynicism, one-upmanship, etc.

After reading through the various SELinux threads, I really became quite perturbed. I mean, really quite perturbed. As an IT Director (and the entire IT department, currently), if I were hiring a sysadmin I know for a fact that someone whose first response to a question on why something doesn't work is 'turn it off' would not get a job here. Neither would a sysadmin with as much cynicism as has been displayed, or an automatic 'it broke things' when something new (and in fact improved) comes along get a job here. Do realize that this list is archived, and that many people who are hiring might use Google to find your name (or mine, for that matter). No, I would hire someone who would read enough of the friendly manual to know where to look and who to ask to find the fix for the real problem. The real fix is there; thanks to the KMail developers for including a 'mark as important' feature so I can find that message amongst the drivel in that thread easily (well, actually I'll probably just delete everything but the real solution). It is the lazy sysadmin who just turns things off without an understanding as to why they are turned off; don't give me the 'overworked' line; you had enough time to post here on the brokenness of SELinux, so you had enough time to find the problem's real source. I am not interested in hiring lazy sysadmins, once I get to hiring. Bryan Smith, for all the verbosity he is known for, doesn't seem to be lazy and could likely hold the job; Craig White likewise, among many others here. I won't name all the names to protect the guilty. :-) The main reason I think sysadmins in general seem to hate SELinux is the 'Mandatory' part of 'Mandatory Access Control' : that is, superuser power is too addictive to get rid of, and SELinux can do away with 'superuser' powers entirely. AND THAT IS A GOOD THING. Yes, it really is. The buffer overflow exploit for those root-running daemons doesn't stand a chance even if it gains root, as long as the selinux policies are set properly. And, yes, it is possible to set the policies properly; any daemon whose developers feel that it needs to be exempt from such might have a problem running on my servers. In a nutshell, SELinux is on and enabled everywhere here; I can't seem to find any measureable speed difference between SELinux targeted, permissive or off; it is unobtrusive in my experience, and it does indeed help protect internet-facing systems from unknown buffer overflows. This is a good thing, and I am convinced that the minor inconvenience of learning a new security tool's configuration is a great tradeoff; especially when the alternative is a compromised system. As there is no such thing as a 100% secure system, anything that improves security but, when properly configured, doesn't impact usability is a BIG WIN in a my book, and probably in many other IT Directors' books too. I have been running Red Hat Linux on internet-facing servers for quite a while, now, and in my opinion and experience, SELinux is the best thing to happen to Linux since 0.13 was released. It's about time the antiquated default Unix permissions system was overhauled. Yes, it requires study, thought, and care. I would expect nothing less of any sysadmins who would work under me. Also, as one poster wrote, SELinux is NOT a *service* but is indeed the Bully Boss of the system. This is also a good thing for internet-facing servers to have; how is the machine supposed to know that the Real Root has logged in, and that that process with euid 0 really was started by the Real Root? The Real Root should take the time to configure in to the policies those things the Real Root would normally do (you know, things like backups and the like, along with other normal activities), but then block those actions that the Real Root would not do (like install a rootkit; yes, a properly configured SELinux can prevent installation of a rootkit on your machine even if it gets 'rooted'). The power of the properly configured Mandatory Access Control system (The Bully Boss) is completely in the control of the Real Root, but untouchable by those Fake Roots who wish to do your system harm. Block file system browing with Nautilus

Hello All, It's possible to lock down the Gnome desktop so that a user can't open a terminal. One of the steps includes not letting Nautilus manage the desktop, but that's okay. However, it's still possible to browse the file system with Nautilus by clicking on "Computer" in the tool bar, and then on "Filesystem". I want to block this. Can the "Filesystem" icon be removed? I haven't seen an gconf keys that can be set, but I may have missed them. Is there some other method available to remove that option in Nautilus? Oh, I'm trying to do this on a CentOS 4 system. Hi, Has anyone used a 2.4 series kernel on RHEL4/Centos4? There's a patch (openmosix) which I would really like to make use of [seeing as I just got 10 diskless computers...] which is not ready (yet) for the 2.6 kernel series... Can I just drop in a 2.4.26 series kernel and continue to have a working system? Or is RHEL now totally dependent on 2.6 kernel features? Cheers, MaZe.

Also if you mess this up it could kill your system, so I would use G4U (Ghost 4 Unix) to image it first before you try. Here's the procedure to remove resize_inode and ext_attr features from filesystems on an FC3 or FC4 installation. Everything must be done from the root account. Step 1 If you installed FC3 or FC4 with SELinux enabled, which is the default, it you must disabled. Log on the system and edit /etc/selinux/config. Replace SELINUX=enforced by SELINUX=disabled. If you don't disable SELinux, the ext_attr will be set again on the root filesystem the next time you boot and every file created or modified will have its extended ACL entries set. Step 2 Download e2fsprogs-1.36-rc5 from SourceForge. Click on the following link: http://sourceforge.net/projects/e2fsprogs Step 3 Untar, compile and install the new utilities: tar -zxf e2fsprogs-1.36-rc5.tar.gz cd e2fsprogs-1.36-rc5 ./configure make make install Step 4 Reboot the system in single-user mode: type reboot at the GRUB splash screen, press enter then press the 'a' and add the word single at the end of the command line (there's a space between quiet and single) Step 5 Unmount all filesystems, including /, and remove both resize_inode and ext_attr features. Run the following commands on all filesystems: debugfs -w /dev/XXXX -R "features ^resize_inode ^ext_attr" e2fsck -y -f /dev/XXXX Example: /dev/sda1 is mounted on /boot /dev/sda2 is mounted on / /dev/sda5 is mounted on /home umount /boot umount / umount /home debugfs -w /dev/sda1 -R "features ^resize_inode ^ext_attr" debugfs -w /dev/sda2 -R "features ^resize_inode ^ext_attr" debugfs -w /dev/sda5 -R "features ^resize_inode ^ext_attr" e2fsck -y -f /dev/sda1 e2fsck -y -f /dev/sda2 e2fsck -y -f /dev/sda5 Running e2fsck on the root filesystem takes a while. Step 6 Reboot the system. During shutdown, you will get error messages telling you that the root filesystem cannot be written. That's normal because the root filesystem is still mounted read-only. It must remain mounted read- only during shutdown. During boot, you will get a message telling you that the system was not properly shutdown and ask you if you want to verify the filesystem integrity. You can skip this step. I've chased all over google and haven't come to any satisfactory resolution on this... today, I installed a Belkin 2-port KVM switch (with audio support & built in cabling) for my CentOS 4.2 server AND my Windows XP desktop. Now, the mouse (a USB mouse) does not work on the Linux box. However, it WILL work if I plug it directly into the CentOS box. if I switch over to the CentOS 4 interface, before I startx, I see a display on the screen that consists of the following output: "drivers/usb/input/mid-core.c: input irq status -84 received" (minus the quotes) This message is repeated every few moments. How to select a motherboard

Not being familiar with chip sets and other factors that "hardware experts" understand, I am perplexed with the multitude of available motherboards. Is there a Web site that can be of help or a "strategy"? My goal is to replace my motherboard with one that is Centos compatible and uses a Pentium 4 in the 2 MHz range. csgfs repo problem

I just took a brand new CentOS 4.2 x86_64 install, updated all of the base packages with yum, and then added the csgfs repo and attempted to install those packages. Modules installed in the wrong directory

I did a yum install of modules from the CentOS-csgfs repository (GFS-kernel, cman-kernel, etc). Modprobe does not find the modules. Upon investigation, I found that modprobe is looking in: /lib/modules/2.6.9-22.0.1.ELsmp/ while the package files were installed to: /lib/modules/2.6.9-22.0.1.EL/ Can I tell modprobe to use those modules somehow? Are modules for the smp kernel available? Or do I need to get the source rpms and recompile for the smp kernel myself? Bowie

Yeah, we've had several generations of intel motherboards that we've used for desktops with Centos (EL4), Tao (EL3), and Red Hat before that (815, 845, 865, 915, and we're eval-ing a 945-based system right now). For the most part, they Just Work (tm). Intel's alsa drivers don't work with the (newest) 945 system. Also, you'll need to install/compile drivers if you want to use the integrated graphics on the 9x5G mobos, but intel's driver works with all the systems we've tried it on. Dave Thompson UW-Madison

compaq R4000 update (hogging interrupts)

After a couple hours last night.... doing a "killall -SIGUSR1 cpuspeed" bumps up the /proc/cpuinfo information for cpu mhz to 2393 Mhz. I did notice a little increase after that. However, the machine is still sluggish. I did a "hdparm -c 1 /dev/hda" but really did not notice any difference. I tried to download fglrx64_6_8_0_8.16.20-1.x86_64.rpm from ati (also 8.20.8) and get the screen to be in 1280x800. This did not work. The screen pops up initially for the boot process but then goes black. I waited quite some time but nothing ever showed on screen. Screen is still 800x600. Anyone have experience with the ati radeon 200M Express setup? Anyway at this time I am disappointed so far. the reason for buying this model (performance and portable) does not seem to be performing very well. I continue to search for ways to setup the screen and find these lost cycles... One thing in dmesg output is : ACPI: PCI interrupt link IRQs 10 11 *0, disabled????? Strange install problem

I am having a problem with CentOS-4.1 & CentOS-4.2 network installs. Before I file a bug, I was wondering if someone could test it on RHEL4 and see if it is a CentOS or RHEL bug. The problem is this. I am PXE booting into anaconda and loading a basic kickstart file via http. The kiskstart justs sets up the network & keyboard but does not start any install. I can then configure the install using anaconda. I used this fine with CentOS-3. However, in CentOS-4, if I use the graphical (X11) install, I can only select the minimal group of packages. If I do a text based install, I can select all packages. Normally it is the text mode install which is lacking so I assume this is a bug. Centos for OS390 Hercules problem

Hi! I use 2 volumes to install Centos for OS390 (Address 120 and 121). All the installation process is ok, but when the linux says that i can reboot the system whitouth problems i dont't know the IPL addres to boot and the LOADPARM. Anyone can help me, please? Thanks

Hi all, Just watching for my first time the 'oom-killer' call in a CentOS 4.2 workstation. System was running normally but with high load of nice process, iow, rosetta and seti, others appart, nautilus, etc... i realized that after a night of standby running normally, the next moorning after few manual operations from X-session in local console, it started a massive swapping, this time not recovered as previously other time, finishing in a oom-killer call. Finally inspected the syslog and realize the oom-killer was called to leave the system stable having killed firefox-bin, 3 x rosetta, xmms and one nautilus. It's a PIII 800 Mhz, 40GB IDE, 512 Mb RAM, 1024 Swap space, up for 4 days. I'm not very xperienced in tunning the memmory system nor the swap system, help appreciated to avoid this memory 'trashing' situtation (14 virtual desktops openned at the same time). Is it a normal situation? Is it a correct protecction measure? It's due a low bandwitch IDE HD? how can i tune it to avoid this situations? is it a high load for this workstation? I think the oom-killer was called correctly to avoid the system collapsed, but i think there was a problem in the swapping subsystem or a memmory trashing situation to avoid. Horde framework from CentOS Extras

Hi! Anyone of you running the Horde framework applications from CentOS Extras RPM install? Since yesterday's security update I can no longer safe the application's configuration from withing the browser administration. For each required setting with a dropdown menu the dialog claims that I missed to make a selection, while of course I did. Just to note: yes, the filesystem permissions for the config directories are temporary changed to allow the apache user to write the config.php files. SELinux is in permissive mode. Nothing logged in ssl_error_log. Can anyone confirm this? I do not see a report in the Horde mailing list. This server was running fedora core 2 till 12/2/2005. It had an impressive uptime of 180 days or so. On friday I upgraded to CentOS 4.2. After upgrading to CentOS 4.2 this server has been throwing kernel panics every 10 hours or so. These are some of the error messages I am getting on the console: "CPU 0:Machine check exception :4 Bank 0 : f672100000000833 TSC 112180365ccf ADDR e2c7f7c0 Kernel Panic - Not synching Machine Check" This is a production server. Printing Postscript - Very Weird Problem.

Hey folks, okay, here's the situation - I have a Centos 4.2 system with cups printing installed printing via postcript (with appropriate PPD file) to a HP LaserJet 1320N printer (via jetdirect socket 9100). Everything seems to work right - except for an unusual 'font'??? problem. Many letters seem to be just slightly garbled. At first I thought this was a mechanical problem at the printer (for weeks), but just this morning I took a closer look and realized everything was too regular for it to be a mechanical failure (ink smearing or something). Anyway the problem is that the bottom non-empty scanline of _very_ many letters/digits/symbols gets transposed over ontop of the topmost non-empty scanline of the same character. This results in the following conversion (rough ascii art - note there's a lot more scanlines involved due to far higher resolution, which means this is far more invisible). | AA | | AA AA | | AAAA | | AAAA | | AA AA | => | AA AA | | AAAAAAAA | | AAAAAAAA | | AA AA | | AA AA | | AA AA | | AA AA | Any idea how to fix this? Huge OO.org packages installed by default

I was just wondering if anyone here knows why the OO.org packages on RHEL/Centos are so huge. Eg. On Mandriva 2006: 40834529 OpenOffice.org 113064600 OpenOffice.org-libs 20124669 OpenOffice.org-help-en 19976941 OpenOffice.org-l10n-en = ~185MB On Centos 4: 683298379 openoffice.org-i18n 124072694 openoffice.org 111894560 openoffice.org-libs = ~876MB!! When I say 'installed by default' I mean that I selected the 'Office' package group during the install of both OSes and didn't make any custom package selections. Both OSes have OO.org 1.1 working fine, I'm just wondering why costs me nearly 5 times as much disk space on RHEL/Centos than it does on another distro? -- Tim Edwards

All, I have a problem with a new Seagate hard disk. The problem occurs when i go to install CentOS, i insert the cd and start the boot up process, when it gets to the section where it detects the hard disks, the driver is seems crashes, the message it produces complains about no one caring about a interrupt on IRQ11. The hard disk is a Seagate 200GB 8MB SATA150 NCQ drive, on a SilliconImage 3112 PCI adapter card. Does anyone have any ideas? Regards, Peter

So I am expecting that after install my cpu speed will still be reported LOW (997M vs a 2.4GiG for a 4000+ cpu). Any experiences out there with the 64 bit amd and maximizing speed when plugged in whould be appreciated. Jerry

Hi I have a compaq R4000 with the 2.4GIG AMD 64 bit. 4000+ rated. proc cpuinfo reports cpu Mhz as 997.481 Do I have to run the 64 bit version to have things run correctly? I just have the normal 4.2 loaded at this time. The laptop seems slow for 4000+ as reflected by the cpu Mhz also. Any thoughts on running the 32 bit version of 4.2 vs the 64 bit version of 4.2? Jerry

See AMD "Cool'n'Quiet" which reduces the CPU speed when not under load (and/or on 'niced' processes). You can disable the cpuspeed init to make it always run at the maximum speed. gconftool-2 not setting exec_ats

I am using gconftool-2 to setup exec_ats and it is not taking it? Specifially I am doing: gconftool-2 -t list --list-type string --set /desktop/gnome/accessibility/startup/exec_ats "[/home/user/myprogram]" then when I look at it in the gconf-editor nothing is there... What is it I am missing... I have many other bool type settings that work fine. Thanks in advance. Jerry

Boot hangs at Initializing hardware...

Anyone else having problems with 4.2 with the boot hanging at Initializing hardware... storage network ? Booting to single user or typing 'I' for interactive startup does not help. Not a timeout problem - hangs 'forever' - days at least. Did a complete reinstall and rebooted OK, did updates and the boot started hanging again. Same problem with either the 4.2 standard installed kernel-2.6.9-22 or the updated 2.6.9-22.0.1.106.unsupported kernel. May be related to audio as that is the next thing to be initialized after network. Looks like BZ 172920 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=172920 Both Knoppix 4.0.2 and Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 live-CD distros seem to work OK on the same hardware, as have RH 7.3-FC1/2/3, WBEL3, and CentOS 4/4.1. The problematic system is an IBM A21p notebook with (according to Knoppix lspci) Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24 using module cs46xx. Doesn't really need sound as it is currently acting as a print-server for a color Laser, but haven't figured out how to get it to boot under CentOS to work the problem. Will try mounting the disk from a Live-CD boot and play with config files next. Phil
