I am using gconftool to set a number of parameters up automatically... However, the one parameter I cannot find is under root you should be able to set the "automatic login" on first boot up. This found under "Applications", "System settings", "Login screen", then automatic login. Can someone point me to that setting? THanks, Jerry

rsync to a port other than 22

I am trying to use rsinc to tranfer my ftp directory from one server to another. I have port 22 closed off due to port knocking and I am trying to direct rsync to use another port. Unfortunately I can't seem to get it to use the specified port. Here is my command, if someone could point out my error I would appreciate it: rsync -avr --port=XXX xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:/var/ftp /var/ftp The error this generates is: ssh: connect to host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 22: Connection refused rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(359) Thanks, Ed

Netcard don't up

Dear Friends I have 2 netcards (eth0 to Internet and eth1 to internal network) in CENTOS 4.2, bit when I boot system the up eth0 and et1i [OK]. When I run ifconfig the eth1 has not IP configure, then I run command ifdown eth1 and ifup eth1, after eth1 is work perfect. Below I show file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 # Please read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt # for the documentation of these parameters. building a new kernel, problems booting without initrd

Hello all, Grabbed a new kernel (from kernel.org) to build a custom kernel but it won't boot. I followed the directions at redhat to setup a box without initrd (which I don't want and don't need to use). But the system hangs. Has anyone built a custom kernel without using initrd? I'm using CentOS 4.2. It hangs at or after "Freeing unused memory" Thanks. excerpt from the page: (http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/udev/) Udev without initrd Install Fedore Core as usual and reboot. Execute the following commands mkdir /tmp/dev mount --move /dev /tmp/dev sbin/MAKEDEV null console zero mount --move /tmp/dev /dev Install your kernel without an initrd. Reboot. You will get some SELinux errors, and syslogd will not work as expected.

rsync and passwords

To synchronize my server with the "standby" server, I run the following: rsync -a -e ssh /home/ 192.168.0.22:/home/ As expected, I am asked for a password from the destination computer. news server innd can't connect

I am setting up a news server and can't connect. OpenOffice startup help

I am using OpenOffice Quickstarter ( http://segfaultskde.berlios.de/index.php?content=oooqs ) to help speed up the loading of open office 2.0 when using KDE. Also, I've told KDE to issue the command oofromtemplate -invisible by putting it in a simple script in .kde/Autostart For some reason, when oooqs has the settings below (screenshot link - http://users.zoominternet.net/~ryanag/oofficeqs.png ) everything works perfectly. Open Office loads from a cold start in about 3.5 seconds. When I don't use the oooqs, the script does not work - it prevents open office from loading. Does anyone have any idea what oooqs is doing that makes my script work? Since I'm using Open Office 2.0 I don't expect to find anything in the official Red Hat docs.

sendmail problems errors

hello, i am having problems with sendmail when i am trying to restart it. this morning i woke up and found it not working and when i tried restarting it belched out these errors at me. What is the "sg" device? The reason I ask, is that I have a file server running CentOS 4.2 on a Dell Precision 1650. Disks are attached via QLogic FC. I backup to a Qualstar TLS-4222 tape changer, with AIT-2 tapes, which is connected over an Adaptec 29160 Ultra 160 SCSI. The software I'm using is Legato Networker version 7.1.2. I'm backing up a bit under 1 TB a month with this. Quite frequently these days (meaning once a month or two), the Networker software loses the ability to control the tape changer. Mount, unmount commands just don't work any more. The only way I can seem to fix it, is to use the Networker admin software to remove the robot, and tape device, and then recreate it with the Networker jbconfig command. The jbconfig command detects the Qualstar, and then detects /dev/sg3 as the tape device. Now Networker can use this device to move tapes around in the robot, but not to read and write. So I have to delete / dev/sg3 from the Networker configuration, and then add /dev/nst0. And then it works (for a while). So I'm wondering, why the software is setting me up with /dev/sg3 instead of /dev/nst0; and is there anything I can do about it. Bonus question if anyone else had a similar issue. Anyone here install Java Studio Creator with CentOS 4?

I tried yesterday. During the install it yacks at trying to install the application server that comes with Java Studio Creator. Complains about lacking libstdc++ or compat-libstdc++ or something like that. Anyone see this or know what to do about it? I ask here in case there is some trick to getting a piece of software (that's obviously looking for one version of libstdc++) to see what's installed. According to this page (http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jscreator/reference/docs/Start…) it works with RHEL 2.1. What changed so drastically in this regard between there and here? Anyone run lighttpd + fastcgi + PHP?

I have a website that needs to run Squirrelmail (which is PHP based), but I'd like to get it feeding into Ruby on Rails as well. I'm looking at lighttpd because it seems to be easier to get it integrated with Rails. I'm curious, though, how difficult it is to get PHP running with it in this configuration. Overall lighttpd seems to be pretty easy to use. However, it looks like I may have to recompile PHP. I was curious to see if anyone has done this with CentOS or if there are RPMs out there in the world that would allow me to avoid this. Preston

Post postinstall configuration

I'm building kickstart files for use in doing automated installs of various systems. I would prefer to do fairly minimal amounts of work in the "%post" and postpone further installation and configuration until after the first reboot (or even later). It should be easy enough to add something to rc.local that will download scripts and run them, but I'm wondering if there is a preferred technique. I haven't found anything in the Red Hat documentation I've read so far. This isn't about figuring out a way to do the update, it's about trying to follow the "Law Of Least Astonishment". I've dealt with too many really screwed up systems that had customised stuff everywhere and nothing worked as expected. Suggestions? -- Matt

Netcell RAID cards

Hi, Anyone tried netcell products on Centos 3 or 4? They claim driverless operation under WinXP, but in linux the only doc that is related with CentOS would be the Fedora core 2 (http://www.netcell.com/support/Fedora_Core2_readme.txt) and requires a kernel rebuild. The script creates a lock file for the session, rsyncs the changes to the backup server, synchronizes offices using unison, deletes the lock file. Unison is executed in "batch" and "silent" mode so that no output is generated and mailed by cron. One other thing you need to consider is the size of the file system you are trying to synchronize. I have a very large directory structure in two offices which required running unison a second time splitting up the synchronization into two sessions. This can easily be done by ignoring a certain path/paths and then synchronizing them in the next session. If you are thinking of synchronizing between more than 2 locations, you need to plan the fastest route (ie. A<->B<->C or B<->A<->C). I have had no problems synchronizing between more than two locations. For all of my implementations using Fedora or CentOS operating systems I have downloaded the unison source, installed the ocaml compiler (easy to find for centos/fedora use google) and compiled from source. I have never had a problem. Another benefit to the implementation that I have been using is the fact that employees in each office can work on files on the server as long as the internal network is functioning, regardless if the synchronization link / externel connection is working. The synchronization is basically transparent to the user, and if it happens to go down it will pick up where it left off as soon as it can regain a connection. Hi all, I have a problem :). On my CentOS workstation, I had glib2-2.4.7-1 installed. This is the last version which is provided by the CentOS distribution However, I need to install a software which requires an higher glib2 version so : I took the source of glib2-2.8.4-1 on the gtk+ web site and creates the rpm installation file with "chkinstall" I obtained the glib2-2.8.4-1.i386.rpm file Then I execute yum to update the glib2 package : yum localupdate glib2-2.8.4-1.i386.rpm And know, I have a lot of problems. Surely because some library files where overwritten with the newer version files (Right or wrong ?).... Is there a way to recover the problem ? (Now, I can't launch a terminal under gnome) Well, I have broken the distribution and I feel that I will have to reinstall it. For the next time that I will try to update a package manually : Is there a safe way to update manually the glib2 library without crashing all the distribution ? Or is there a way to install the latest version of glib2 in order to have the two libraries versions installed (glib2-2.4.7-1 and glib2-2.8.4-1)? or something else ????? CPU usage from top

I'm seeing some strange results from top on CentOS 4.0. When it first starts, it reports low CPU usage. The next refresh (and subsequent) refreshes, it shows high CPU usage. In both cases, there is nothing shown in the process list that is using much CPU. What is causing this? I have a server using cs and gfs that is built from the source rpms on http://rpm.karan.org/el4/csgfs/SRPMS/ (modified only enough to compile on the latest kernel without hugemem). Is it safe (or even possible) to update these from the official distribution, or do I need to remove the current stuff and rebuild the cluster using the official rpms? I would like to get to a point where this can be kept up to date with a 'yum update' command now that it's in the CentOS distribution. Bowie

That is the question. I don't know what I did NOT accept, but Firefox does not seem to be installed on a recently set up server. So is there some easy way to go through the install stuff from CDs to add this or do I punt? Then I have to reread the stuff to set up YUM again.

Server displaying ?

I figure this is an apache issue, but I dont' know where to look. Since moving my website from an older Redhat installation to my new Centos 4 server (all updates installed), all my web pages display a "?" anywhere I have a non-breaking space. If I do a view source in my browser I see the " " character, but when looking at it on my server via ssh, I see a vertical bar, similar, but not a pipe. And when looking at the source on a different browser I see a ASCII 160 character. But on all browsers, I'm seeing a ? on the display, instead of the non-breaking space. Anyone know what I need to configure/correct/change in Apache to correct this? Thanks, Scott

Hi all, On a CentOS 4.2, x86_64 system, I created a new session that is selectable from the sessions list in GDM. To make GDM see the changes, I ran the following: gdm-safe-restart That's supposed to make GDM re-read it's config files. Well, it worked, but instead of staying on vt7, GDM moved to vt9. At first it looked liked GDM had died, but I ran ps aux|grep gdm, and found it running on vt9. Odd, that. I then tried a gdm-restart, and GDM disappeared again. It had moved to vt10. Odder, still. I was only able to get GDM to restart on vt7 by killing the GDM process, or by changing the server's run level from 5, to 3 and back to 5. On a CentOS 4.2, i386 box, gdm-safe-restart and gdm-restart function as I expected them to: GDM restarts and stays on vt7. I also didn't notice any problems on a FC4 box. There isn't much of anything in terms of documentation on gdm-safe-restart and gdm-restart. I'm fairly sure I'm using them correctly. Anyone else notice this behaviour? Query: Filesystems

Hello, Just a few quick, but not very simple questions...: Do any Linux filesystems (besides XFS) support freezing? (ie. in conjuction with LVM snapshots this can allow a mounted filesystem to be frozen [freezing all processes writing to this filesystem] in a valid state (with possibly dangling unlinked files), the device can be snapshotted via LVM, and the original filesystem unfrozen - the snapshot now contains a valid snapshot in time of the original filesystem - with no corruption. Can this (freezing) be used for the root filesystem or other important filesystems? ie. might it cause something vitally important to freeze? Can a snapshotted LVM (the snapshot, not the original filesystem) be modified (I assume snapshots are purely readonly...) - so as to remove the dangling deleted/unlinked files and possibly modify the uuid (I realize there is a nouuid mount option for XFS). And the last question: is there some sort of filesystem which supports generating 'in-filesystem' snapshots (ie. some sort of copy-on-write block semantics applicable both to files and directories combined with both a root rw directory to access current files and a ro /snapshot/YYMMDD-HHMMSS hierarchy to access snapshots from past dates with the possibility of deleting them at will (ie. generate a snapshot every hour, after 24 hours leave only every 6th one, after 7 days leave only dailies, after a month leave only weeklies etc... - much too complicated, but it's easier to get the basic idea across on a larger example - probably organized via cronjob). I realise such a solution would not be foolproof (if the disk goes bad or the filesystem goes haywire it's pretty much useless) so a hard-copy would still need to be maintained (probably via freeze/snapshot/unfreeze/dump it somewhere else) - but this would be useful for the users (the ability to restore past deleted files...) In a way this could possibly be realized via some twidling with rsync (although for space efficiency this would require copy-on-write hardlinks or something like that) but I see no way of doing this without wasting a lot of space (at least 1 copy of the snapshoted filesystem, the rest could probably be hardlinked). And to maintain full R/O status, this would need to be a seperate partition, etc... Any comments/ideas? Cheers, MaZe.

What is going on with the USB that it will not boot in normal mode? Install booted and installed normally, linux rescue booted (although I still saw messages about disabling IRQ #11). I see that same message on a normal boot but it never continues after that... Any ideas, why USB is stopping this laptop from booting? Jerry

If I can squeeze a message between the discussions on security (:-)) I have been trying to compile a kernel on an x86_64 box under CentOS4.1 and now 4.2. The problem is that neither make xconfig or make gconfig work: make gconfig * * Unable to find the GTK+ installation. I have regularly compiled on an x86 box with virtually identical installation and I have compared the libraries but can't see what I have missed. The kernel version is 2.6.14.3 which is the latest stable but this happens with older kernels. There have been suggestions of various patches to a makefile which I have tried but to no avail. So I think it may be a library issue. So can anyone with an x86_64 box on which they have successfully compiled a kernel post me their output from: yum list | egrep gtk\|glibc\|glade | grep installed ... or even the complete yum list (privately to save bandwidth!) Planning Mail Server (with low resources)

Hello, I'm planning the installation of the school's Mail Server. This is the first time I get in administration. I've been reading about postfix, cyrus and the first page in the guide of HughesJR.com[2] about installing postfix-cyrus, but due my low hardware resources, I ask for suggestions to see If what I need can be done (and|or) stable. Hardware: Pentium III 1.4Ghz 256 RAM 40 GB HD-IDE Soft: CentOS 4.2 Postfix Cyrus-IMAPd MailScanner Spanassassin Partitioning(in MB)[1]: / 1.000 /boot/ 100 /home/ 15.000 /swap/ 512 /tmp/ 500 /usr/ 1.000 /var/ 5.000 /var/log/ 2.000 /var/spool/mail/ 14.800 The server will serve around 2000 students, but only 80(maybe 100) concurrent at time. I would like to make a very basic installation, 'cause as you can see, I am with a very low hardware resources. This host will be mail dedicated. In the near future the hard would be upgraded(maybe a nu computer). Now, I need something to show in a working environment. I'll appreciate any suggestion. I've never been involved in this. I used to program with php, but now, it has been delegated :| to me (chosen between other tasks). Samba Server requirement

Hi all, I am using CentOS 4(equivalent to RHEL 4) with Samba Version 3.0.10-1.4E.I have mount a folder(say "//linuxsrv/projectname" in my "/mnt/projectname") from my Development server which is a Debian Sarge box.My requirement is that whenever the Samba server running on Debian Box is restarted,I have to recognize it and unmount the "server folder" and then mount it again or shortly I have to recognize the Samba server status of the Debian box.Is it possible by any configuration editing in /etc/smb.conf or anything like that. Please help me as I am not a Linux guru. -- regards Sreenath.G

I am currently synchronizing multiple office locations using a program called unison. Unison (http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/) is a very well written program that can perform 2 way file synchronization. There are many configurable options with unison and I recommend that you check it out. In each office I have a PII350 128RAM Fedora or CentOS server running unison and the files are accessed via samba. I also configure samba to hide (veto) all of the temporary files used during synchronization. For redundancy I place a slave server with each master server that backs up all the user data / file system using rsync. This way if one of my $5 PII servers catches fire I can automatically switch over with no downtime for the users. The only downfall I have encountered is with Autocad files not properly reading the synchronized .dwl lock file and more than one user working on the same file. As a work around for this I have configured Unison to keep a backup of the last 20 versions of a file. This way I can always hit my backups to retreive lost data. As a side note, if anyone knows a work around for the stubborn autocad dwl lock file let me know :))! In any case my implementation has allowed me to synchronize file systems between 4 offices (3 in Canada, 1 in USA), using recycled hardware that was otherwise going to be donated/trashed. Dovecot w/ MySQL support and CentOS

I am converting a Debian box running Postfix, Courier and MySQL to a CentOS box running Postfix, Dovecot and MySQL. I have the Postfix with MySQL support taken care of with the RPM from the centosplus repo. It appears that the stock RPM for Dovecot comes with Postgres, but not MySQL support. It looks like I need to download the source RPM and then rebuild it with MySQL support. Could someone outline the steps I need to do this or point me to a good resource? I have not worked with source RPMs in the past, but it looks like it is time to learn! Also, if I build it from a source RPM, should I then exclude it from my repos to keep a future update from overriding the one I built? Thanks! Jeffrey

Missed disk array during centos installation!

Hi all, i´m a newby and i have a HP lc 3 server 600 mb ram 3 raid 0 HD and i´m getting this error when i try to install CentOS on it: "...No hard drives found ...OK?" and then server reboots. My question is: Do i need a raid driver to avoid this issue? if so, how i can get the right driver for my box? Any help will be helpfull... thanks and regards!

CentOS 4.2beta on Sun Ultra 5 (sparc64)

I just wanted to bring some attention to the experimental build of CentOS that Pasi put together for sparc64 architecture. I installed it for the first time last night on a Sun Ultra 5 (333MHz, 256MB RAM, upgraded to 40GB hard disk). I installed it over a serial console as this is a headless system. Install went flawlessly. After the install was done and it booted up, I ssh'd in as root, and within 5 minutes had it participating in my LDAP/Kerberos/NFS environment. Logged out, logged back in with my regular user account with X11 forwarding enabled, and started firing up GUI apps. The box is a little memory starved, and I think with 512MB it would be a lot better, but it is quite usable! App startup time is longer than what my Athlon64 3700+ has me accustomed to but once the apps are running, they are snappy & stable. If you have an old 64 bit Sun workstation kicking around collecting dust, I think it would be worthwhile to try this build out and post your results to Pasi's centos-sparc mailing list. With any luck, maybe we can get to the point where this is an officially supported architecture. Some apps are still missing, as is to be expected with a new architecture. Most notably, OpenOffice.org is not there. I did run firefox, gimp, thunderbird, and xchat flawlessly though. I can't comment at all on local X11 console support because my sun boxes run headless. This is inspiring me to save up for a loaded Sun E420R or E450 to run at home and replace my Duron-based web/mail server.

Licences

Hi, I'm looking for a way to determine the licenses of packages we're using. Is there a command (rpm, yum, up2date...) that will take the package name as argument and return me the licence? Or is everything included with Centos 4 GPL? That is the only licence I found in the repositories... I remember that RH had the habit of putting all the applicable licences on the distros' CD. odd vmplayer problem

Is anyone using vmplayer with centos4.2 as the host? I have several machines where it works great other than an error that says "*** attempt to put segment in horiz list twice" in the xterm window where it is started. However, on one machine it will start to boot windows virtual machines (both win2000 and XP) and they hang about 3/4 through where the progress bar goes across the screen - and of course this is the machine where I really want to run it. The machine is an IBM eserver with dual xeons and 4 gigs RAM. A very similar but not quite identical machine with less RAM does not have the same problem. Could the memory be an issue? This same machine that has trouble with the windows virtual machines works OK with the downloadable Browser Appliance vm which turns out to be a basic ubuntu installation. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

up2date command to install kernel source

Thanks that link explained a few things.... However it still mentions downloading the kernel source yourself then installing... I was looking for a command that goes and grabs the source rpm.... something like "up2date kernel-source" or something like that - to go grab the correct kernel source... I can do "up2date mozilla" for instance and it gets it and installs it. I am looking for something similaiar for the kernel source src.rpm. We run CentOS on our Dell kit (servers, workstations, desktops, even some laptops) and haven't had any problems with warranty support from them for hardware issues. I would never call them about software support, which we don't pay for. If I were running RHEL more widely (I do have one install on a server), I suspect that Dell would push me toward calling Red Hat directly anyway. Dell has decent Linux support for various distros. Officially, they only support RHEL (and theoretically SuSE), but there's community support available for most other reasonably popular distros (notably Debian). Dell's Linux Community Website, <http://linux.dell.com/>, has pointers to various resources. If you want to run anything other than RHEL, you can get support from the various mailing lists (especially linux-poweredge and linux-precision). I know that people have gotten Dell's OpenManage (OMSA) stuff running on other distros. I've also had no problems with Dell's DKMS and OMSA packages on CentOS (CentOS is, after all, supposed to be almost identical to RHEL). I recently did a bunch of BIOS upgrades from the Linux command line with Dell's packages (sans OMSA) and they worked well, too. Also, the x86_64 CentOS code seems to run fine on our Dell Precision Workstations with EM64T processors. The issues there are the same you'd see running on any other AMD64 hardware -- some packages aren't built for 64-bit systems; some may not be buildable. Your hardware specs exceed that of the box that was serving mail to *more* students about 8 years ago at Duke University. That box, if memory serves, was a Pentium 90MHz running Solaris x86. Though it did have the benefit of SCSI disks. If you can serve only POP3 instead of IMAP, that box will have no problem serving that many users and more. If you're going to do IMAP, I suggest trying out Dovecot and doing some comparative benchmarks before you settle on Cyrus. I made the switch on a dual Pentium III 800MHz box, 256MB RAM, 20GB disk, and the performance difference was staggering. I agree with using Postfix instead of Sendmail. Some of the other things like virus scanning and spam filtering is something the old Duke mail server never had to worry about, and admittedly that adds a big unknown into the equation. I'll echo the sentiments of the other folks and say that /usr needs to be bigger. Also, I highly recommend putting everything but /boot into LVM so that you can take advantage of more disk later on.

slow usb hard disk performance.

Dear All, I tried a USB2 Maxtor One touch II external hard disk on a couple of my Centos 4.2 boxes and found it initiallised the SCSI subsystem ok and added device "sda". But the performance is miserable, yet the same hardware running XP the performance is satisfactory. HDPARM gives results varying from 120k/sec to , at its peak 4.75M/s on a USB 2 machine, still very poor by any stretch. On a twin CPU USB 1 machine it give a steady 1M/sec, which is consistently slow, which is better than erratically slow ( :-) ) Still dog slow, wondered if anyone has seen this, and wondered if the firewire interface would be better? (I need to get a cable to try this). P.

O.T. Wheel mouse

Slightly off topic, but wanted to ask. Is there any first source/seconds or third source application that can be used to speed up the movement of the wheel mouse? It's painfully slow compared to my "normal" usage on a windows box. Or, are there any quick hacks that can be made to speed up the wheel in the Xconfig? Snowman

Evolution forgetting read mail

Hi all, Has anyone seen Evolution "forget" which emails have been read in CentOS 4? I have a client that's reported he's reading his email, closes Evolution, and when he starts it again, the messages are marked as unread. I found bug reports about this here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=273787 https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4373 It's supposedly fixed in version 2.2.1.1. I'm running Fedora Core 4 and haven't had the same issue at all, so it does indeed look to be quashed. I'd appreciate some feedback. Configuring eth1 to be in promiscuous mode

Hi there -- I want to have eth1 on my system run in promiscuous mode. I modified the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 file to read as follows: DEVICE=eth1 BOOTPROTO= ... ONBOOT= TYPE=Ethernet ... I reboote the system and when I did an /sbin/ifconfig, eth1 appeared without an ip address. I did a check in the /var/log/messages file and while eth0 is in promiscuous mode, eth1 does not appear to be so. Is there something else I need to do? Thanks.

Hi Bernard, You can use dansguardian from the dag repo. It does content filtering as well as use clamav for antivirus. I just complete an install of 2.6.9-11.EL i686 On reboot, I get a couple of minor errors: smartd [FAILED] (not sure what this is) and then an error saying that no X server could be started (I installed using the graphical install and selected 'everything' as a first-time install) The error states: (EE) VIA(0): No valid modes found. According to the detail output, VIA seems to get loaded ok, then funs through every possible video mode and fails with the following two lines repeated for each mode: (II) VIA(0): Not using default mode "320x240" (bad mode clock/interface/doublescan) (II) VIA(0): Not using default mode "320x240" (hsync out of range) according to the output, it successfully reads a DEL Model 7004, and gives a max h-image size of horz 31, vert 23 . (it's a 15" display). I'm not sure how to track this down. Any input is appreciated.

Ok thanks to point me on the fstab file. Effectivelly for one raison I don't know yet the entry for the swap was strange and did not work. LABEL=SWAP-cciss/c0d0p swap swap defaults replaced by /dev/cciss/c0d0p3 swap swap defaults 0 0 and everything works with swapon cmd. Thanks again. SpamAssassin tends to use lots of RAM. As long as you can keep it out of swap, it runs great, but as soon as it runs out of memory and starts swapping, your performance will drop like a rock and probably cause mail to start piling up. Your machine should be fast enough to run ClamAV and SpamAssassin locally, as long as you increase the RAM. Bowie

CentOS 4.2 clean install -- can't print to officejet k60

Hello all, I have a new disk and installed CentOS there but I am unable to print. I thought the printer was having troubles because from the /var/log/cups/error_log everything appears to be working. The printer is not printing however. I attached the printer to a windoze 98 box and I could print fine. I had printing on my previous system(FC3) but this isn't working. If I can't print then I am dead in the water. From what I've read there are some contradictions the docs say that hpijs works with USB (and I think that's what FC3 used) but other docs say to use hpojs, but I don't see that in CentOS. I'm using KDE and the printer was config'd after the install completed. I turned on all the cups debugging. What other things can I try? Are there some raw commands I can send to the printer via echo or something like that? Is there a safe way to install hpojs on CentOS? Thanks.

Keeping data on 2 servers in sync !

I want to build 2 servers (both running samba) to provide file storage to 2 offices (approx 100 miles apart, linked via DSL) but all data writen to 1 server must also be saved to the other server. Both servers would also allow users to access the data via a VPN thus allowing 1 office with a failed server to access the other server via the vpn and still see the data from both offices. I currently have 1 server working but we want to add the second office to the system. (Currently 1 office has 10 users and the second office has 1 user connected via VPN ) but the second office will have 20 within 12 months and the first will have 35 soon )) Has anyone done anything like this ? I am currently reading & unpicking http://www.linux-ha.org/ to see what that gives me. Any clues/comments very welcome, even if you think I am mad ! Thanks Denis

Raid with one disk?

Is it possible to set up a single disk raid (kind of redundant to call a single disk an array) but I've got a single SATA drive in the machine not doing anything. It's a 10k maxtor 74G drive, and what I really want is just to backup two home partitions. I can always reinstall the OS, but the data can't be recovered that easily. The mobo supports raid-0,1 and jbod. Suggestions? -- Snowman

Hello, It would be nice if we could get a full list of packages which have a wrong sha1 checksum. I don't have the bandwidth for a full mirror of all of Dag's rpms and i also don't have shell access to such a mirror. So a small request for a mirror admin: The following checks the files repodata/*.xml.gz against the sha1 sums in repomd.xml and checks the RPMS/*.rpm files against the sha1 sums in primary.xml.gz. Can you run this on the repodata files of at least the el4-i386 rpms? If possible: on every distro/arch combination found in Dag's repo :-) example: cd /mybigmirror/apt.sw.be/redhat/el4/en/i386/dag/ # should have the same contents as http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el4/en/i386/dag/ xsltproc repomdtoshasum.xslt repodata/repomd.xml | sha1sum -c gunzip -c repodata/primary.xml.gz | xsltproc primarytoshasum.xslt - | sha1sum -c Those xslt files are in attach and you probably need to add a path to those xslt files. They're only quick hacks but they seem to work on a couple of rpms on my pc. access to httpd logs

I need to enable some access to the httpd logs over ftp so they can be analyzed by another application to get a report. I used to do this on Windows NT before replacing the server with CentOS. Thanks to help from another thread I have an ftp server enabled on the web server. I thought the easiest thing to do would be to create an id for the application to connect with, then provide a symlink to the logs in that generic user's home directory. The problem is the logs are owned by root. How can I make them readable by this generic id without completely compromising security? Plus, as the logs rotate this id will still need access. Booting from an external USB drive?

Is it possible? Booting the installer from the CD works, finds the USB drive, and allows me to put the root filesystem on it. I put the /boot partition on the internal hard drive and installed GRUB in the boot record of that partition. GRUB shows the menu and begins booting, but eventually fails with the error that /dev/sda5 (the external partition) does not exist. I was hoping (perhaps in vain) that initrd would provide the necessary modules/hooks to mount the USB device. Is there some step of the installation that I'm missing, or something extra that I need to do by hand, like in the old days when LILO had to be explicitly told about SCSI cards?

slow responding firewall server

Hi There, I recently suffered a serious hardware failure on one of my firewalls, (motherboard died), this machine was originally a redhat 9 box, on an Athlon 2200 with 512Megs RAM, this machine was doing the following jobs for a small network at a relatives house: Firewall (IPTABLES) Transparent proxy (squid) Sendmail smarthost IMAP mail server SAMBA file server IPSEC tunnel to my home. The only machines I had to replace it with were an Intel SC5000 chassis with twin PIII 1GHz CPUs on SCSI RAID (1 Gig RAM) and a compaq PII 450 (512Megs) software RAID on IDE 40Gig drives. So I installed Centos 4.2 on both, split the IMAP and SAMBA onto the SC5000 and put the firewall, Squid and sendmail smarthost on the Compaq. The system is connected to the net via a 2Meg Line. While each of these machines easily copes with the jobs they have to do, I have noticed (or rather my relative noticed and I agreed) that web browsing now has a high latency. i.e. you go to a new web page, there is a substantial pause, before the page starts to load (substantial a few seconds, whereas previously it was instant). DNS is all ok and working fine, there are no delays there. The DSL line shows very little latency from the net and outgoing from the lan. I note that squid uses a fair amout of CPU on the PII450 from time to time, but can't seem to get a handle on what is causing the delay. The only thing I can think of is that the PII450 running squid is just slow compared to the old Athlon box and I am reaping the "benefits" of that. I do find that hard to believe though, since the box isn't running X or anthing else extra. I also notice that sometimes some downloads, particularly large ones just seem to grind to a halt after a few megs, and sometimes then carry on a bit later if left, right up to full speed of the line. During this slowdown, the latency of the line even with large pings is fine, so I am sure the connection is good. Is Centos4.2 now so heavy that a PII450 is not enough for a transparent proxy and smarthost.... Any comments/ideas are welcome... Pete

Apache/PHP Security Help.

I have a personal apache/mail server that is getting hacked and I'm not sure how the person is getting in. What's happening is that every few days, the below script will show up in /tmp as 'dc.txt', owned by apache and then a TON of mail is queued up to a bunch of addresses in @uol.com.br. I initially thought they got in becuase I had an outdated version of 'gallery' installed. I rebuild the server and update gallery and thought I should be okay. But now they are still getting in and instead of blindly rebuilding the server, I need to figure out how they are able to run perl scripts on the server. Any suggestions? --Ajay PS. CentOS on Xen question (Xen Hosting)

List: I am considering getting a Xen based virtual server for providing static web-site, secondary MX & DNS. Pros & Cons? anyone? Minimal install from the centos server CD (centos will be the guest OS) with Apache, Selinux, Iptables, qmail, spamassasin, djbdns, clam, mysql, postgreSQL & INN. Any install issues? What should be the HDD & RAM requirement, in addition to my database size & say 10 GB for mail? Also, how much bandwidth saving can I get with say 10 MB mail (from mailing lists) and script to compress and get it by rsync? Secondly, is it possible to compress news server feed & batch download in compressed format, reliably. I am trying to save on extra bandwidth costs here in India. Also, can someone recommend and Xen Virtual host provider on my direct email address...anyone who is small & can do a bit of hand-holding initially...without a big dollar denominated bill ;-) Small shoestring budget..a very very small shoestring ;-) With best regards.

Scalix on CentOS

www.scalix.com the community edition. I have not gone too far in, the system I would run it on won't be built for a week, but it lists Fedora Core 4 as one of the OS options. Also RH Enterprise 3 or 4. What do I select to install it on CentOS 4.2?

yum vs. Alert Notification Tool

I'm running CentOS 4.2 and my CentOS Network Alert Notification Tool has been "red" for over a week now. It's telling me that there is one package available for update, namely shadow-utils-4.0.3-58. However, a "yum update" tells me there are no updates available. I've checked a few of the mirrors and they only appear to have shadow-utils-4.0.3-53. At first I thought the mirrors may be a little behind, but it's been over a week, so I think something else is going on. Anyone else seen this? Alfred

CentOS and Dell Support

I'm a fairly experienced RH and Fedora user and admin looking to try CentOS for the first time. I have lots of experience with Dell servers and I'd like to stick with them. Although I'm sure it's not always strictly enforced, Dell claims that it won't provide warranty hardware support on servers installed with an un-Dell-supported OS (basically, anything other Windows, RH, and Suse). Are other CentOS admins successful in getting Dell to support their hardware? How does it work--do you just tell them it's RH? Also, any recommendations for which Dell PERC or Dell SATA RAID adapters can I expect to work nicely with CentOS? If, on the other hand, Dell gives you trouble for CentOS installs, and you have recommendations for other server vendors, let me know. In particular, one that can provide on-site warranty support in Toronto, Canada, would be great. I'm only interested in i386 architecture, by the way. Thanks! --Matt

maybe someone here can help me understand why I am getting this strange behaivor. Does anyone have an elegant solution for finding the date of the 3rd Monday each month and the date of the Sunday preceding? (Sunday shouldn't be beyond my capabilities, once the Monday part is worked out.) For the past several years, I've been handling the chore using a file with a manually input list of dates -- which is about as elegant as driving a tack with a sledge hammer.
