HP laptops with CentOS 7?

Hello all, I'm looking into getting HP laptops for our department running CentOS 7. Last time I checked this was some five or so years ago, and when I look at https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops, nothing much seems to have happened since. At that time, I had to give up CentOS on laptops, as both Wi-Fi and graphics wasn't too well supported with CentOS 5 and 6. Is the situation better now with CentOS 7? We're only allowed to buy the HP, Dell and Apple brands here at this university, so what I'm looking at is basically HP. Apple is not of interest because of their pricing. All our desktops and laptops are HP's running Windows 7 and 10, and they work fine. We do have some Dells, but only in the server area. Currently all our CentOS 6 and 7 workstations are custom built OEMs used for molecular modelling, but are now getting rather long in the tooth. I have a laptop at the office as a backup, running Ubuntu 16 LTS, as that was the only thing that found all the hardware properly at the time. However, I'd rather not go down that particular road for various reasons. The thing that interests me first and foremost is whether the latest CentOS 7 iteration will install right out of the box with all hardware properly detected, no manual compiling of drivers or jumping through hoops to _maybe_ getting stuff to work with eg a HP Elitebook 850 G4. CentOS 7 "Set Up Enterprise Login" after update and reboot

Dear Experts, Something went astray with one of my systems. Large number of updates were installed on it all at once at some point. Then after system was rebooted it does strange thing I haven't seen on other systems. The machine is set up to boot into graphic login ("runlevel 5" to say it using outdated language). But before giving login screen upon (re)boot it tries to walk you through set of screens similar to first login to newly created account. However, along that it forces to to "Set Up Enterprise Login", and there is no way to bypass that, or kill this thing to get graphic login screen. As of this moment I suspect that something went astray during big update. I'm not excluding system compromise, however as of this moment this seems unlikely, as this system while online is constantly watched for "system integrity" (i.e. all files that only root should be able to touch are monitored for their checksums, etc.) and I would be alerted earlier were anything wrong. Rolling back big update (using yum history) failed, I am going to restore all on the box to the state before that big update (and I also can just wipe the drive and reinstall the system). So I kind of have ways out. Still, if anyone can shed some light onto what could have happened, or what could have accidentally get changed, it would be really great. I can ssh to the box, and I can switch it to "runlevel 3" and back... Thanks in advance to everybody who will respond for your insights! This only happened on one of three C-7/mate desktop machines. With "first boot" I went through the process, including setting up an account, that was added to wheel as a part of the process. I then logged out of that and was able to get into my regular account (via the gui) just fine. I removed that spurious account and cleaned things up, but ended up in "first boot" again the next time the machine was rebooted. So, I've now neutered that account, but left it in place and haven't run into "first boot" again. I haven't been able to figure out what caused this, yet.

Samba help

Folks I have a Centos7 system (SOFA) and want to install a Samba share named "STUFF" for the machines inside my home. All users in my home have read access to the share, but only one user "me" has write permission. The configuration below worked just fine when the Samba system was on Centos 6, but did not work under Centos 7. The client machine is Windows 10. I have changed all "private" information for this message. The Centos 7 machine is running with SELINUX disabled, and effectively without firewall. Windows network browsing finds the computer, but not the share. (it used to find the share with Centos 6). run bash <filename> from cron

This might be a bit OT, but I've never had to do this before and what I've googled doesn't seem to be working. I have an ansible playbook that I'm working on that I want to run as a cronjob. One task I'm having trouble with is where I have a text file with lines like: rd.pl "blah blah" rd.pl "blah blah blah" This text file has to be 'executed' using 'bash filename.txt'. (Don't ask why, I'm working on code that isn't mine.) When I run the playbook in a console this bit works perfectly. However, when it's being run from cron, it dies with 'rd.pl: command not found'. My original thought is that cron's $PATH is missing the location to this rd.pl file (it's in /root/bin), so one suggestion from the Google was to add the path into /etc/crontab, but I'm still having the same problem. At this stage, I've no idea what to try next. Any ideas? Everyone, I was hoping to be able to plug the Logitech Brio in and have it work, but it did not. I can have it connect to a Windows 10 laptop and have it function, so I know the camera works. The Centos 7.4 is recognizing it when I plug in the usb 3.0 cable. VMWare Workstation 14 on CentOS 7?

Hello, did anybody succeed in installing/updating to VMWare Workstation 14.0.0-6661328 on an updated CentOS 7 (kernel 4.9.54-203.el7.centos.x86_64)? Here it fails at building vmmon/vmnet modules. I couldn't find anything about this on the Internet.. WS seems to get less popular and unfortunately reproduces the same inability to install upon kernel updates, that drives me nut for years now. Please don't suggest other VM sw, I'm stuck to VMWare WS at work.. Regards, -- wwp

slow libreoffice

Hi, so what do I need to install to prevent libreoffice from being so slow that it becomes unusable? This issue has been there with Fedora years ago, and now there´s same issue with Centos. Back then, there was a package you could install to make it work at normal speeds, but last time I checked, this package doesn´t exist anymore. This issue is particular to the Fedora/Centos versions of libreoffice and does not occur with other builds like the one you can download from the libreoffice web site. I was trying to make a chart and it became so slow that it´s unusable. I guess scrolling is only fast enough because I have a powerful graphics card.

home on nfs

Hi, I have the home directory of a user on an nfs server and mount it on a client. When the user logs in, they end up in the root directory rather than in their actual home directory and need to cd into it. The user can read and write to their home directory, so it kinda works fine --- but only kinda. When the user starts emacs, some of the settings in ~/.emacs are not applied, but the saved desktop is being loaded. Both machines are running Centos 7.4. What could be wrong with the nfs mount? -- "Didn't work" is an error.

CentOS 7 + NVidia Quadro 2000 graphic card

Hi, I'm currently trying to install CentOS 7 (desktop) on a Lenovo workstation with an NVidia Quadro 2000 graphical card. Normally I know my way around NVidia cards and how to configure them either using the ELRepo drivers or those downloaded from nvidia.com. I have written a corresponding article on my blog: https://blog.microlinux.fr/nvidia-centos/ But this time it looks like I have no luck. ELRepo's nvidia-detect utility detected the 'kmod-nvidia' driver, but installing it gave no result. No X. Then I tried a manual install, blacklisting nouveau, installing the necessary build tools, etc. The driver would build OK, but again, no luck, no X. Has anybody got this card to behave under RHEL/CentOS 7 ? virt-install cannot mount virtio iso during installation

Hi guys. I have seen, read and test to install a windows 7 vm under centos 6 and kvm. I have install windows under kvm a lot of times, but is my first time with virtio. XFS quota usage mismatch on CentOS 6 ?

We have a number of home directory servers running CentOS 6 exporting XFS file systems over NFSv3 We enable user quotas for all users - with a relatively small allocation to each user Every now and then, we get a user that has a quota mismatch - where they are (usually) over their quota, but their actual usage (via du) is significantly less This happens on any of the servers I suspect that the mismatch is probably due to file space being allocated on the server, but somehow not referenced by a file - may be by deleted files?, but lsof on the client doesn't show any suitable deleted files The 'problem' usually resolves itself in a day or so - although I have no idea how or why etc ... Has anyone seen an issue like this - or know of any XFS tools that could be run on the server to find and fix the missing quota allocation? Thanks James Pearson

Possibly [OT] ansible vmware inventory plugin

This might be OT, but it is CentOS related. I've been running Ansible on C7 for a handful of months now, and updated to 2.4 as soon as it was available. I've been building inventories by hand in that time (mostly due to the fact we had no actual documentation on the managed external customer servers). However, as we have a multiple VMware clusters, thought it might be time to tinker with dynamic inventories. The problem is that the vmware_inventory.py script didn't come with 2.4 in CentOS 7, even though it's in the stable branch. I'm curious, is this a deliberate omission on the CentOS maintainers part? mariadb server memory usage

Hi, is this ok for a database server, or do I need to turn the memory allowance down? The machine has 48GB and mariadb is allowed about 40. The machine is a dedicated database server. Mysql seems to go up to what top says is virtually allocated under some circumstances; I don´t know what mariadb does. I don´t want anything get killed because memory runs out. Swap should prevent that anyway, but perhaps I went a bit higher than I should? Usual advice is to use 80%, and there are probably reasons for that. Perhaps it´s better to allow for more disk cache? Hi all, when I check for updates with yum, it gives me a list of packages, with some additional info, e.g. --> systemd-sysv-219-42.el7_4.1.x86_64 from @updates removed (updateinfo) --> systemd-sysv-219-42.el7_4.4.x86_64 from updates removed (updateinfo) yum info will tell me that I have 4.1 of this package installed, and that 4.4 is available - from the repo updates. What is the meaning of the "@" - it marks the older package? And why are all packages always "removed"? It would seem that both mentioned packages are still available... Regards, Thomas

Intermittently unresponsive mouse

I am using the Mate desktop on CentOS 7 and have found that the mouse intermittently becomes unresponsive for a few seconds, typically no more than 3-5 seconds. I do not remember seeing that when I used the regular Gnome desktop on CentOS 6 but I could misremember. The machine is fast and uses a dual-monitor setup with the native nVidia graphics driver. Is this really to be expected? I thought this was not an issue on Linux or maybe I am engaging in wishful thinking...

Akema Yagi made sure kmod-jfs for CentOS 7 was updated amazingly fast which is greatly appreciated. Hello guys, my playground this days with gstreamer resources can be found at: http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/gstreamer/ The best thing for centos I think to compile the given one by gstream libav: Has ffmpeg 3.2.5 not ffmpeg 2.8.13 what is the background for vlc. In principal it's possible to build ffmpeg 3.4. http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/gstreamer-ffmpeg3/ vlc 2.26 is only compatible with ffmpeg 2.8.xx release. Hopefully i get response from the gstreamer guys to get bluray running with gstream-libav. In the past it was possible with gstreamer 1.4.5. As a side node as always: Got problems with dvd on usb blurayplayer, but this is another storry and can not be fixed from the kernel side. Buffer problems. Blurays & DVD (builtin drive) are playing with vlc. Totem can play anything, exclude bluray. http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/media/ Another little problem is vlc 3.0 can only compiled with gcc 4.9 and upper. Has to be rearrange for static gcclib, no real dependency by installation. http://vault.centos.org/7.4.1708/sclo/Source/rh/devtoolset-3/ Not yet on my todo list. Why 4.9? No g++ binary break. Bluray taken from my libbluray1 rpm otherwise i brick gvfs (bluray 0.2.3). Recompiled test wise. Think about to write a mail to redhat. Yes I replace the complete gstreamer 1.10.4 with 1.10.5, because of minor update. The original package was gstreamer-libav-0.6. It was complete inpossible to play anything good in totem. Hi, folks, Has anyone else seen the issue of having an excludes= in /etc/yum.conf, but yum-cron appears to be ignoring it? This may have been the case earlier this year, where it seemed to partly install a new kernel, then not done the post-install. I *think* that's what I'm seeing on a box with twin Tesla cards, with yum.conf: exclude=kernel* xorg* cuda* kmod* and yet cron.daily reports: /etc/cron.daily/0yum-daily.cron: Failed to check for updates with the following error message: Failed to build transaction: kmod-nvidia-384.90-1.el7_4.elrepo.x86_64 requires nvidia-x11-drv = 384.90 nvidia-x11-drv-384.98-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 requires nvidia-kmod = 384.98 mark

how do I use CDC usb ports?

I want to use a USB CDC port. I was under the impression that they were not all that hard to use. 'Tain't going well for me. lsusb | grep ega tells me Bus 007 Device 007: ID 2341:0042 Arduino SA Mega 2560 R3 (CDC ACM) As root, cat-ing /dev/bus/usb/007/007 gives me garbage. As anyone else, I get a permission denied error. Usually, though not lately, a /dev/ttyS? shows up at about the same time as the .../007/* device. How, without continuously running as root, do I get access to CDC usb devices? I've tried making myself a member of dialout, but it doesn't seem to take. I've tried both lgroupmod -M hennebry dialout oIt doesn't seem to take.and usermod -a -G dialout hennebry . How do I tell which one I want? I'm guessing I can't use /dev/bus/... . How do I tell which /dev/ttyS? What is the best tool to compare file hashes in two different drives/directories such as after copying a large number of files from one drive to another? I used cp -au to copy directories, not rsync, since it is between local disks. I found a mention of hashdeep on the 'net which means first running it against the first directory generating a file with checksums and then running it a second time against the second directory using this checksum file. Hashdeep, however, is not in the CentOS repository and, according to the 'net, is possibly no longer maintained.\ I also found md5deep which seems similar. Are there other tools for this automatic compare where I am really looking for a list of files that exist in only one place or where checksums do not match?

Hi list, I solved the problem. Anyone had answered but I report the solution for similar problem. The problem was caused by an sshd.service under /etc/systemd/system/. This file was placed because upgrading from 7.2 to 7.3 I got problem with ssh startup and someone suggested to add pidfile directive in sshd.service to solve the problem. Updating from 7.3 to 7.4 I think that 2 files for sshd caused some conflict that kill my sshd. Removing the first file problem is solved. Thanks to all. C7.4 and sshd restart problem

Hi list, Some days ago I updated my centos 7.3 to 7.4 on a dell server. After this update I noticed a strange behaviour by sshd. I noticed this problem because trying to connect to ssh I got connection refused or high latency between connecting and password req. So I noticed that sshd will be restarted every ~2 min. >From log I get this: Received signal 15; terminating Failed to start OpenSSH server daemon Unit sshd.service entered failed state sshd.service failed sshd.service holdoff time over, scheduling restart ....and sshd restart. Hi yeah, it's just a normal USB dongle, and it's supported by the Linux Kernel, that's why I tried it. I have tried other USB dongles with Linux before and failed. This one was plug and play. CentOS 6 P2V alternatives?

Hello all, This week I've tested out a few ways to do a P2V on a rather ancient CentOS 6 server, in order to move it to a Hyper-V host. So far my tests have failed rather spectacularly. Initially I was set on doing a simple dd-routine, but was told that the server cannot be taken off-line as it's being used daily, so had to look for other solutions. The disk setup is currently as follows: Three 500 GB sata-disks, sda, sdb and sdc, are used to build a software raid called md0. No LVM's here. Sdd is a 120 GB drive, with partitions for boot, swap, home and /. No LVM's here either. The farthest I've gotten is with the Rear solution. http://relax-and-recover.org/ The backup goes well, but recovery for some reason fails to create initramfs with all the installed kernels, as well as failing with an error saying it cannot find /boot/grub, after which the recovery terminates. Virtualizing systems like this is kinda' new to me, having it done on Windows only, and I'm not really sure how to proceed when it's a CentOS system in question. The physical CentOS-server runs a few license managers and nfs-shares that server molecular modeling software, that are rather intricately set up (I inherited this server some fifteen years ago). Incorrect characters in Chinese font

I frequently exchange e-mails, read and write documents and visit Chinese websites although the language of my computer is English. As I was translating a Chinese document yesterday, I had three characters I was not able to translate and after much hair-pulling realized to my surprise that they may be incorrectly drawn in Centos 7. These very characters in the same document were drawn correctly on my Android phone... As none of the characters are uncommon, I am very surprised. Could this be a Unicode issue? How does one report this in CentOS? The usual bug tracker?

low end file server with h/w RAID - recommendations

I'm happy with either a brand name, or building my own, but would like a hardware RAID controller to run a pair of disks as RAID1 that is actually compatible with and manageable through Linux. modestly priced laptop for C7

I'm looking to replace my (old, creaky) netbook (Acer Aspire One D255e, a screaming dual core 1.6 GHz Atom, and a whole 2 gigs of RAM) with something faster but not too large. Sometimes (usually) the netbook is painfully slow. Something like a hi-res 14 (or 15) inch screen (full HD), minimum of 4 gigs RAM, HD of a half terabyte or bigger. I'd like to not have to go over 600-700 dollars, so I know my choices are somewhat limited if I want to avoid the 400-500 dollar windows 10 junk^H^H^H^Hsystems from BJs, etc. Something with a quad-core processor, and all hardware works with C7. I've glanced at Lenovo Thinkpads on amazon where there are several "factory refurbished" ones with similar specs to what I mention above in the $500-700 range, but I don't know if they're any good or not I'm open to suggestions from any/all of you! thanks in advance! Kickstart ksdevice question

This should be easy to answer (I hope). We routinely kickstart boxes to use for managing our customers RADIUS/DHCP configurations (along with other things). We've had a C7 kickstart in place since I built one in May and are finally starting to roll it out for new installations. But, I'm curious as to what ksdevice= actually does. With the C6 we routinely used ksdevice=eth0 since we ship boxes with two NICs and knew interface 1 was always eth0. With C7 comes the interface naming convention changes and that's where questions have arisen about that option. It's been set as ksdevice=eno1 since I know these servers name the interfaces with the eno# convention (integrated dual-port). A coworker of mine insists on setting it ksdevice=enp2s0 which doesn't seem to work like it should (though, it could be a fault netinstall image, I'm not sure yet). In all honesty, we'd prefer to keep the eth# convention for C7 like C6. So, my question is, does setting ksdevice=eth0 dictate to the system the names of the interfaces? Is that just a name for the install process and the kickstart script assigns names? (We have the kickstart script setting them as eno1 and eno2, btw.) I've googled this to no end and haven't found a satisfactory answer. /usr/bin/x0vncserver large blocks on screen at times

I use this vnc program to remote into my station. (C 7.4) When I do, about every 5 to 10 seconds a big solid block appears on my screen. About six inches long and 3 inches wide. it quickly then goes away. I use the realvnc.com viewer when I do this. Is there some setting that would help with this ? Jerry

anaconda not installing to sda?

I'm having what appears at first glance to be a kickstart+anaconda issue on CentOS 7.4. As near as I can tell in the program.log in the anaconda environment, the partitioning instructions downloaded with the kickstart from cobbler appear to simply not be applied. Then /mnt/sysimage is not mounted, the logs are not copied to /mnt/sysimage/root and the installation stalls due to the anamon checking. (Also anaconda is trying to e2fsck /dev/loop devices which is puzzling.) If anybody has hints about what I would double-check or if you've resolved a similar issue I would be quite interested. More details: I see the same behaviour after cutting most items out of the cobbler kickstart template, however I confirm that /run/install/ks.cfg in the anaconda environment has the following: ignoredisk --only-use=sda zerombr bootloader --location=mbr clearpart --all part / --label="/" --fstype=ext4 --grow --asprimary program.log from the anaconda environment is here: https://gist.github.com/christopherwood/72f390d7e5788b9bc9e841d40c926895 The system does boot and install just fine from the CentOS 7.4 iso without being kickstarted. If I change the drive name (sda) to a ludicrous value anaconda simply errors, so at some level it's understanding about sda.

PHP package versions

Hi everyone, http://php.net/eol.php says that PHP 5.5 and 5.4 are EOL, but a freshly installed Centos 7 box, then fully upgraded, gives me PHP 5.4.16-42.el7. What do people do about maintaining current versions of software on a variety of machines? We have some users who manage their own machines, and would rather not force them to jump through hoops of managing repos to get later versions. I just hope I've missed something straightforward, and that someone here can offer advice. TIA, Greg.

Centos and xen network bridge issue

Hi All, We have a single Centos 5.11 server running a xen hypervisor that went down hard after an extended power outage this weekend. I'm mostly familiar for KVM as that is the majority of what our guests run under and have tried getting up to speed on xen bridging to no avail. The problem is that after the xen server spun back up, the previously defined xen bridges were lost. I've been going in circles and am seeking advise on to how to restore them. I found the bridge interfaces defined in /etc/xen/scripts/network-bridge-pcl, this is what I am trying to restore. Logs/configs files are posted below. There are two guests running, one uses 'xen-dmz1' and the other 'xen-dmz2' I created 'xenbr3' somehow with an interface named after one of the guests. The server will be retired shortly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running NoScript because otherwise Firefox freezes up a lot. Recently I've had difficulty accessing a site. I suspect the reason is that it uses redirection in a way that frustrates my efforts to give it permission. To test the notion, I'm considering temporarily allowing script globally. How hard is it to reverse? Problems with kernel-3.10.0-693.5.2.el7.x86_64

Everyone, I have two desktop units with : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz that do not allow the login screen to appear after the update of : kernel-3.10.0-693.5.2.el7.x86_64 and kernel-3.10.0-693.2.2.el7.x86_64 Both of these units worked properly with kernel.x86_64 3.10.0-514.26.2.el7 I am not sufficiently familiar with grub to know if the problem is related to grub or related to the kernel. I have been able to boot the machines by the use of kernel.x86_64 3.10.0-514.26.2.el7. When using kernel-3.10.0-693 the login screen is blank and the login prompt is missing, however each machine is accessible via the terminal interface, or remotely with ssh. Does anyone have any ideas ? Greg

Maria 10 breaks unixodbc mysql connector

I recently installed mariadb-server 10.1 by adding the following repository: baseurl = http://yum.mariadb.org/10.1/centos7-amd64 ...all was well until we had a power failure and upon rebooting unixodbc was segfaulting. Once I did a yum undo, the mysql odbc driver was functional. I could reinstall mariadb-server, add a symlink and it would probably work, but I thought it would be better to post and hopefully the maintainer of whichever package (unixodbc, maria, mysql-connector...) should be addressed, could be alerted to this issue in the event that it could (or should) be fixed on a package level. We have been fortunate to hang onto one of our summer interns for part time work on weekends during the current school year. One of the intern's jobs is to load documents and data which are then processed. The documents are .txt, .docx, and .pdf files. The data files are raw sensor outputs usually captured using ADCs mostly with eight bit precision. All files are loaded or moved from one machine to another with sftp. The intern noticed right a way that the documents will transfer perfectly from our PPC and SPARC machines to our Intel/CentOS platforms. The raw data files, not so much. There is always an Endian (Thanks Gulliver) issue, which we assume is due to the bytes of data being formatted into 32 bit words somewhere in the Big Endian systems. It is not totally clear why the document files do not have this issue. If there is a known principle behind these observations, we would appreciate very much any information that can shared.

RH software collections

Question about a bug in bugzilla

Hi, I have a CentOS 7 server which shows bug 1487266 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1487266 <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1487266> It says, it’s fixed in java-1.8.0-openjdk-1.8.0.151-3.b12.el7 I updated this package, and now it shows as java-1.8.0-openjdk-headless-1.8.0.151-1.b12.el7_4.x86_64 So, is there another update coming or are these the same packages? Problem with graphics on latest CentOS 6

The thread "Problems with kernel-3.10.0-693.5.2.el7.x86_64” reminded me that I have a similar problem but on the latest CentOS 6 kernel I’ve been meaning to report. But on a Dell Optiplex 5050 with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz CPU and the above graphics card, the X11 login screen is all distorted and unusable. There is a simple solution: if I remove the "vga=0x31b” parameter from the kernel boot command it works just fine. However, I would prefer to have a usable alternate console on our 1900x1200 monitors, but any value I tried for the vga parameter results in a distorted login screen. Any ideas what may be causing this? This is only an issue on the very latest chipset. On the next most recent Dell desktops we have (Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590 CPU @ 3.30GHz) I do not have this issue. R: dplyr, doBy, and ggplot2 in CentOS7

I have a R script that I am running from python with rpy2. On a debian system I run this: apt-get install R-cran-ggplot2 R-cran-caret And the script works. I want to move this to CentOS 7 system. There it cannot find R-cran-ggplot2 or R-cran-caret. Does anyone know what packages in CentOS 7 I need for dplyr, doBy, and ggplot2?

CentOS 6 SCL - httpd24 still being updated?

Hello, Specifically this is in reference to RHSA-2017:2483, which should increment the httpd24 packages to 25-9 in the SCL. The SA was released on August 16th 2017, so it has some age to it, but there's no corresponding CESA on it and the SCL for 6 still sits at the previous, 25-8. It's a good set of CVEs at 70+ days now. Looking for insight, or my own self initiated face palm because I'm missing something. Thanks!

Hi all, I have 5 CentOS 7 virtual guests installed (all fully patched to latest release) and i have the following error in all of them: systemd-journald[7779]: File /run/log/journal/b4a41f4214ca44f898638301891a6f2e/system.journal corrupted or uncleanly shut down, renaming and replacing. ?? .. And I don't understand why. I have configured "Storage=volatile" in journald.conf ... How can I debug this error? Is it possible to disable systemd-journald thoroughly? Thanks -- Greetings, C. L. kmod-jfs on Centos 6

I am a bit of a noob with Linux and Centos but would like to be able to access an old external USB disk formatted JFS by OS/2. I have seen there is a kmod-jfs package on elrepo that ought to work with Centos 6 but am unsure how to install kmods without hosing my existing system... Not Able to Configure Nagios Server 4.3.4 in Centos 7

Hi Team, I was trying to install the Nagios server in Centos 7. I had downloaded and unzipped the Nagios server and it's plugins file. As per the installation instructions I ran the commands in the concerned folders of ./configure , make , make install for both the core and the Nagios plugins. I am not able to figure out the issue behind that it is not working It did got installed using yum which was a previous 4.3.2 that that had it's own errors and wanted me to update with no update of it available in the epel repository. [OT] Bash help

I know this is for CentOS stuff, but I'm at a loss on how to build a script that does what I need it to do. It's probably really logically simple, I'm just not seeing it. Hopefully someone will take pity on me and at least give me a big hint. This type of code has always been the hardest for me for whatever reason, and honestly, I don't write many scripts these days. I'm struggling to get psuedocode that works, much less a working script. I know this is off topic, and if it gets modded out, that's fine. Transferring Thunderbird mail accounts: Windows vs. Linux

Hi, One of my clients brought me his PC with Windows 7, so I can migrate it to Linux, e. g. CentOS 7 + KDE. So far I made a backup of all the data, but I wonder how I can migrate the existing Thunderbird account. An operation I perform quite regularly is replace an existing Linux system (Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, whatever) by CentOS. When Thunderbird is configured, I just backup the whole ~/.thunderbird directory and then restore it on the new installation, which usually works perfectly. Any idea if I do this when moving a desktop installation from Windows 7 to CentOS? Unable to apply mysqld_db_t to mysql directory

Hello, A server was configured in /var/lib/myslq in the root fs. I added a LV specifically for mysql. I stopped myql and renamed /var/lib/mysql to /var/lib/mysql.old. I created a new dir /var/lib/mysql and mounted the LV on /var/lib/mysql. I then copied with "cp -prZ" all mysql files in /var/lib/mysql.old to /var/lib/mysql. But then I got a selinux problem: # ls -ldZ mysql.old/ mysql drwxr-xr-x. mysql mysql system_u:object_r:var_lib_t:s0 mysql drwxr-xr-x. mysql mysql system_u:object_r:mysqld_db_t:s0 mysql.old/ I tried to changed the context on mysql with the following commands: # semanage fcontext -a -t mysqld_db_t "/var/lib/mysql(/.*)?" # restorecon -R -v /var/lib/mysql But the /var/lib/mysql directory didn't take the change as you can see below: # ls -ldZ mysql.old/ mysql drwxr-xr-x. mysql mysql system_u:object_r:var_lib_t:s0 mysql drwxr-xr-x. mysql mysql system_u:object_r:mysqld_db_t:s0 mysql.old/ How can I fix the wrong context on mysql directory? Dear all I'm looking for instructions on how to setup a jailed chroot directory for user which needs to upload via scp to the server. Especially I miss clear instructions about what needs to be in the jailed directory available, like binaries, libraries, etc... Without jail I get it to work, but I want to prevent user downloading for example /etc folder from the server. Does anybody have a link or list valid for Centos7 Thanks Regards Adrian

Docker log level

Hi, folks, Just installed and fired up docker for a user, and the default log level is stupidly noisy. Now, doing some googling, I see that I can set the log level on the command line. What I'd *like* to do is set the log level in the appropriate config file, which I gather is /etc/docker/daemon.json. So far, though, I can't find anything that suggests I can do that. Anyone here know if I can, and if so, what the correct syntax is? Thanks in advance.

I have a C++ program that I have been running on RedHat 6 and I want to move to CentOS 7. mounting an nfs4 file system as v4.0 in CentOS 7.4?

CentOS 7.4 client mounting a CentOS 7.4 server filesystem over nfs4. nfs seems to be much slower since the upgrade to 7.4, so I thought it might be nice to mount the directory as v4.0 rather than the new default of v4.1 to see if it makes a difference. The release notes state, without an example: "You can retain the original behavior by specifying 0 as the minor version" nfs(5) states: ** Recent kernels allow the minor version to be specified using the vers= option. For example, specifying vers=4.1 is the same as specifying vers=4,minorversion=1. ** but in fstab or on the command line, using either form (vers=4.0 or vers=4,minorversion=0), if I run mount afterwards, I still see vers=4.1 for the mount. I'm missing something obvious, but the only thing obvious to me is that I can't see it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Zube

Firefox Sync Server 1.5 on CentOS 7

Hi, I'm currently experimenting with setting up my own Firefox Sync Server on a public server running CentOS 7, following this document: https://mozilla-services.readthedocs.io/en/latest/howtos/run-sync-1.5.html So far I have a partial success. Bookmarks are syncing via the basic internal server running on port 5000, and I can also configure a MySQL database for bookmark storage. What I can't seem to do is configure everything to run behind Apache and WSGI. Before I go into further details, has anybody here managed to get this thing to run on CentOS ? Everyone, I have had some continued difficulties in getting yum update to download and update perl-ExtUtils-ParseXS-3.18-3.el7.noarch after the update from 7.3 to 7.4 on several machines. I have had to --exclude this rpm from the command line to make the update happen. The patch for CESA-2017:2563 announced at https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2017-August/022529.html is only available in the centos 6.9 repo. It is missing for the generic centos-6 repo at http://mirror.centos.org/centos-6/6/os/x86_64/Packages/. Typically this repo contains all the latest patches for the latest minor release, but it's missing the new version of openssh. I assume this is by mistake, but please correct me if I am wrong. NFS4 mount nobody 99 / 99

All, I've a NFS4-mount on a CentOS Client with the following parameters: (rw,soft,intr,tcp,port=2049,sloppy,addr=xxxx,clientaddr=yyyy) This mount contains a rsync /home-Backup. All home-folders are owned by nobody:nobody, stat displays uid and gid = 99. Folder permissions are 700. I'm very surprised, that I can access my own home, but no foreign folders, although it looks like permissions are all the same. There are no facls set. I cannot login on the NFS-server, but is it possible that NFS-client shows wrong permissions? - Chris

Accidentally removed sync system user

Hi, As the subject says, I accidentally removed the 'sync' system user. (If you want to know how I got to do that, I just experimented with hosting my own Firefox Sync server on a public CentOS 7 server.) When I removed the user, here's what I got: # userdel -r sync userdel : l'emplacement de boîte aux lettres de sync (/var/spool/mail/sync) n'a pas été trouvé userdel : /sbin n'appartient pas à sync, non supprimé This was the exact moment I said: uh oh! I logged in to another server, and here it is indeed: # grep sync /etc/passwd sync:x:5:0:sync:/sbin:/bin/sync OK, so it looks I shot myself in the foot. I guess I could recreate that user by issuing the following command: # useradd -u 5 -g 0 -d /sbin/ -s /bin/sync sync Since I'm not exactly sure and I wonder if I may have overlooked something, I prefer to ask first before wrecking my system entirely. Please correct me if I'm wrong. CentOS 7: shntools + cuetools

Hello there, I've had to set up some tools to convert cue+flac tuples to mp3 files and split albums flacs into songs flacs. Formerly on CentOS 6, I think I had shntools and cuetools from the nux-dextop repo (not sure about shntools). Anyway, here on CentOS 7 I couldn't find any of them in repositories, so I did `rpmbuild --rebuild` from: - cuetools-1.4.0-0.6.svn305.el6.nux.src.rpm - shntool-3.0.10-10.fc21.src.rpm and `yum localinstall`'ed the RPMs, tools run fine so far. Was it right to do so? If yes, then this email would serve the sake of the archives. Or are those tools available from repositories I'm not aware of? Regards, -- wwp

I've seen this a couple of times, and do not understand what it's trying to tell me: journal: unable to create file '/run/user/200236571/dconf/user': Permission denied. dconf will not work properly. Hello, We have a VM (under KVM - a VPS service by our ISP) running CentOS 7. On it we have 2 NFS mounts, one for backup and one as a live file system (where there are two user homes as well): ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # cat /etc/fstab /dev/mapper/centos-root / xfs defaults 0 0 UUID=7a3ae70a-8ef3-463b-8f5b-be4e2e7be894 /boot xfs defaults 0 0 /dev/mapper/centos-swap swap swap defaults 0 0 10.201.40.34:/data/col1/noc-bkups-1 /mnt/dd2500-1 nfs auto,noatime,nolock,bg,nfsvers=3,intr,tcp,actimeo=1800 0 0 10.201.40.34:/data/col1/hesperia-mount /hesperiamount nfs auto,noatime,nolock,bg,nfsvers=3,intr,tcp,actimeo=1800 0 0 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This setup has been working fine for over a year, even under significant load, without issues. However, yesterday, the "live" NFS mount (/hesperiamount) has started crashing. When bootingeverything is fine, but very soonafter boot we noticed that we lose communication to the mount, although the remote storage system is accessible(without reporting any errors) and no network issues have occurred. We found that dmesg reports failures with call traces (2 examples): https://pastebin.com/GVSDbxFr https://pastebin.com/WujKQuHG This happens repeatedly/consistently (after several reboots) so we have been forced to replace the NFS mount with a local mount (on a new local virtual hard disk), to restore normal system operation. The share was manually mounted with the following command: # mount -vv -o auto,noatime,nolock,bg,nfsvers=3,intr,tcp,actimeo=1800 -t nfs 10.201.40.34:/data/col1/hesperia-mount /hesperiamount2 Questions: * Is this a known issue/bug? * Have we possibly made any NFS misconfigurations (which however have not caused any errors for about a year now)? * What could we do to prevent the error from occurring again? sidekiq receives SIGHUP when started via ssh -t

Hi, I have a couple of ideas how to fix it, but I'm trying to figure out what's going on first. I mainly start this program (sidekiq) on Debian systems, and it might be my first time running it under CentOS, so my conjecture is that it has to do with differences between distributions... Now then, when I run it this way: ssh user(a)example.com '. ~/.bash_profile && rvm 2.3.1@gemset1 && cd path/to/site && bundle exec sidekiq -C config/sidekiq.yml -d -L log/sidekiq.log' it daemonizes itself and stays running. When I add -t switch (ssh -t ...), it gets terminated by SIGHUP. On Ubuntu it stays running in both cases. What's happening here? Any suggestions are welcome. Regards, Yuri

delay in establishing network connectivity

hello, centos 7 If the system (wired static IP#) is powered down and stayed powered down for some period: let say 48 hours or so .... when it is rebooted again it can not establish a network connectivity for some time: 7 to 15 minutes and then everything network wise is fine... I am unable to spot any errors in various system logs. If you think this is on the OS/system side .... where do you think I should look to hunt down some parameter or settings that maybe causing this? thank you, F-
