Please recommend a DVD writer for CentOS 4.1

Hi. I need to install DVD writers in a CentOS box as part of a backup setup. I want as little fuss as possible both with HW recognition and functionality. Can any of you recommend a vendor/product ? Performance of the drive is not an issue. I get confused looking at all the "+/-RW +R double layer yada yada" when skimming the hardware lists.. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Morten

A little iptables help

Wondering if anyone is willing to give me a little assistance with some firewall rules. I think what I'm looking for is fairly simple, and I've been trying to use webmin's firewall module without success. I have a web server that I'd like to open up port 80 and forward a specific port for a select number of allowed ips. That's it. Everything else is dropped. allow: port 80 allow: forward port 8000 for x.x.x.x to y.y.y.y Anyone willing to assist with the rules? And lastly, how would I apply it in a way that it will always be in affect? If the machine reboots for example. Any help is appreciated. James

virtual interfaces

I have CentOS 4 running on an old (early model) p3 with 64 MB RAM. It is acting as a router and firewall for my LAN. CentOS is doing a really good job with Shorewall + DHCPd - on a 10 Mbps cable modem, I see ~ 9.7 Mbps of throughput even when numerous tcp streams to different LAN hosts are running. I would like to add a virtual interface to one of my LAN interfaces. My LAN interface (/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth2) looks like: DEVICE=eth2 BOOTPROTO=static BROADCAST=192.168.10.255 HWADDR=00:60:08:C3:F9:71 IPADDR=192.168.10.1 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.10.0 ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Ethernet would adding the below: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth2:0 DEVICE=eth2:0 BOOTPROTO=static BROADCAST=192.168.20.255 HWADDR=00:60:08:C3:F9:71 IPADDR=192.168.20.1 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.20.0 ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Ethernet Would this create a virtual interface eth0:0 with the IP address 192.168.20.1? OpenOffice MIME types not working on Centos 4

Hi. I have a problem with OpenOffice MIME types on Centos 4 when using KDE, it seems that konqueror does not recognize the file extensions. Gnome works fine. Any ideas?

NFS Mount - RH7.3 Server - CentOS 4.1 Client

Hi Just upgrading one of my dev servers - I'm replacing a current box that runs 7.3 to one that runs CentOS 4.1 Currently the 7.3 dev box talks to a fileserver also running 7.3 over NFS and that works fine. I'm now trying to get the CentOS 4.1 box to talk NFS to the 7.3 server. When i try and mount the NFS share on the CentOS box i get the following error # mount /mnt/cvs mount to NFS server 'Server Name' failed: server is down. Now i know the server is not down as the 7.3 client is connected fine. Anyone seen this before or know a work around? Nothing in any logs from client or server to give me any hints? thanks

centos 4 installed on P4 won't boot on P3

Hi, I installed centos 4 on a P4, configured it (and it booted fine here) then sent it to the DC to be put in a P3 but it won't boot, displays GRUB and halts. The DC guys tried grub-install in rescue mode but still the same. Any clues? Is there some difference between P3 and P4? thanks tom

You may nedd to do a new install on that p3. It comes with a GUI and is very feature rich. http://www.fwbuilder.org/ It's well documented, allowes you do block, redirect, log, Nat, etc.... Very nice for both novice & expirienced users. Is it bad for my web document folder to be user accessible?

PHP and MySQL seem to working on my CentOS installation. I'd like to install phpMyAdmin as well, so I downloaded the necessary files from phpMyAdmin's homepage and copied them to /var/www/html... ... except that's where the process stopped. My regular user account doesn't have permission to write into the /var/www/html folder. Should I just chmod the folder to 777? Is there a reason it's not already user accessible? This is a local machine where I'll be testing web pages of my own design, and not accessible from the web. Or at least I hope not. If I'm running an Apache server just for local files, it's not being seen on the web, is it? Dave

bellsouth and centos rp-pppoe

HI guys i need help i install centos 4.1 and apt-get the rp-pppoe. so i setup the rp-pppoe using adsl-setup and input all the data given by the provider. mount cdrom and command hangs

Hi I had accidentally did "mount /media/cdrom" and no cd was present. The command seems to be hung. I tried kill and kill -9 on the mount command. Nothing seems to kill it. Is there anything else to try to stop that command? I'm on centos 4.1 as an asside is there a command that "senses" if there is a CDROM present in the tray so I dount have to mount /media/cdrom and it fail to tell if a cdrom is present. jerry

AD Issues with Centos 4

I have the latest Centos (4.1), all YUM'd up to date. I've been through the How-TO's on Samba's site as well as 4 million other sites and still can't get proper AD (Active Directory) Authentication to work. It looks like it's working, appears in the domain server list and pulls users and groups. If I do a klist -u, I see all the users with domain+username correctly. However, I can't apply any of that security to any directories on the box or see those users with Webmin (when doing Samba Share security). The users who don't have local accounts can't browse the samba server either (as soon as they connect, it pops up the login ID & Pass) I followed everything and have been working on the issue for 4 days. Am I missing something? Please help! Thanks.

booting from copied ext3 software raid fs to normal fs

Hello. I am trying to boot CentOS 4 from a copy of an ext3 software RAID 1 filesystem (md) which has been copied to a normal ext3 filesystem (hd). I am almost getting there, exept that the system hangs after booting the kernel. I copied the datas from the /boot and / partitions to two similar partitions on the backuped disk with mirrordir (can also be done with cp or dd). I have setup the new disk with grub and I can reach the grub stage 2. It will also boot the kernel properly, but it will hang during the SElinux initialisation (which is disabled). I don't know exactly if it's a mount or SElinux problem. Also, it seems that the raid device is trying to be initialised, and I don't have an md but an hd on that drive. This comes probably from the original setup. My question is: does somebody know how I can change that behaviour and let linux mount the hd instead of the md coming from the original ? Do I need to boot another vmlinuz image or another initrd for it to work properly ? In this case, how could I generate those new images ? applets reported as dying unexpectedy on login

Ever since the xorg-x11 security update of September 13th, I often see the following 3 messages on login: The "Show Desktop" applet appears to have died unexpectedly.Do you want to reload this applet? The "Window List" applet appears to have died unexpectedly.Do you want to reload this applet? The "Workspace Switcher" applet appears to have died unexpectedly.Do you want to reload this applet? Answering yes to all 3 keeps things ticking along happily- but it's not good for my users to see this as they have just about got the hang of answering 'no' by default when an o/s pops up some unexpected question that they don't understand. I'm seeing this across quite a wide range of i386 machines - from 1GHz pIII's authenticating by LDAP to a standalone 3200+ Athlon at a completely different location. I assume this is either an upstream bug, or a consistent misconfiguration on my part. Is anyone else seeing it, or does anyone have any suggestions? -- Cheers, Tony

up2date upgrade-to-release question

Hi all, I just wanted to ask if anybody did a # up2date --upgrade-to-release=4.1 on CentOS 3.5 box? I did it and I'm having a bit of problems. The box just dies... at intervals between half a day and a couple of days. Initially I considered it was a hw problem, so I had the tech support check it out, and they just switched the box with another, and put the harddisks back on the new box... Unfortunately the dying problem remaind so that's why I started considering that maybe something other that hw could be the problem. So did anybody on the list do such an upgrade, and was it all 100% ok ? TIA, Alex

This may be a tad O.T., but I have to ask somebody. In compiling WRF model, everything seems to build but at runtime, I get this error message: real.exe: /usr/pgi/linux86-64/6.0/lib/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.3.3' not found (required by /lib64/tls/librt.so.1) There appears to be something missing from the library, but not being smart enough to know what each one provides, nor know how to look at it, I'd sure like some pointers if anyone cares to help. Belkin OmniView SE 4-port has one aggravating attribute: can't switch in less than 1500ms. Pressing the scan button faster than this is ignored, whereas I want to switch NOW. Performance is flawless beyond this. Other (rare) problems come from system software not seeing a mouse, then seeing one. If the mouse isn't seen during boot-up, I must run kudzu manually to get it seen. gnome-terminal / mutt / chars mixed up

Hi, I have a little problem with characters/lines getting mixed up and I don't know where to look or how to google for a clue. I've a CentOS 4 system on which I use gnome-terminals. When I use mutt (mutt-1.4.1-10) in such a terminal, in some situations it mixes-up the lines in the terminal. It seems in some way it fails to 'refresh' all lines. For example, if I have a line bind index M current-middle in my .muttrc and I press 'M', it happens. Any ideas? I didn't have this prob with CentOS 3, using the same mutt conf. OK I tried to submit a issue/bug, but I get the same response from both my e-mail accounts: <dag(a)wieers.com>: 212.204.216.221 does not like recipient. Repost ----DPMS or hardware

List, Did not get any response from the first attempt, so thought I'd ask again. I've been bugged by the fact that the dpms function will not work on this machine, and perhaps now I have some clue as to why. Looking at the Xorg.0.log, I see where "Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)" which tells me perhaps this is the reason why it won't turn off the monitor. Also, this line prior to the other. `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/". That part I can maybe fix, but I have no clue what should be in the /dev/apm. The only thing that will happen is the monitor will go into screeensaver mode, or if no saver selected, it will do nothing, not even blank. What should the /dev/apm contain? Where does it pick up the info as to what should be in there, from a probe of the hardware? That said, does the fact that I'm using a custom video driver from ATI make any difference? Hello I read about the technology and i found all amazing and great challenger, i like to test and install soon---, for this reason i have some question about this. GFS / CS I see the gfs and cs download into http://bender.it.swin.edu.au/centos-3/ and http://mirrors.csol.org/CentOS/3/csgfs/i386/RPMS/ What are the diference in both packages? Anyone has using this technologies? and example of their installation ? link of howto , etc... any conf to share? DS Fedora Directory Server and Redhat Directory Server are the same ? i read only the support of this are the difference. Any know if Fedora build support sync with Active Directory? Any have a build of srpms of DS Fedora for install into Centos 3/4? Any have the "orig" srpms of DS? i search and not found nothing... when redhat release the srpms ? anyone know this ? Hi all. Firstly, I apologize if this question has been asked before, which I'm sure it has. I'm only new to Linux although I have been 'dabbling' for awhile now with Ubuntu, Fedora Core 4, SimplyMEPIS, Xandros to name a few. I found Centos 4.1 on the cover disk of the September issue of APC Magazine and thought I'd give it a go. I want to learn linux and thought this one was the most compatible with RedHat. I know Fedora comes close but I had a few headaches with it. Anyway, what I need to know is the following. I need all users to be able to dial into the Internet using either kppp or whatever without being asked for a root password. I only have dial-up, thanks to Telstra. I've searched for days and tried various things but no luck. Please help me out with simple, step-by-step instructions aimed at a new user. I tried changing permissions, creating dialout group and adding users but no luck. Hope to hear from someone soon in regards to this issue. PS: It doesn't necessarily have to be kppp but any easy to use dialer.

Sata DVD

List, Are Sata DVD drives/recorders supported in CentOS, and if so, what needs to be done to read/write to them. On my initial install, the machine would boot from the drive, but I wound up having to use a regular ide cd-rom drive to do the install. The drive in question is a Plextor 716. Users logged in vs. not

I'm seeing a user logged in if I do a "who" but I find by looking at "last" that user logged out after 28 minutes. Is something not being updated for some reason? Netstat does not find the user logged in, nor are there any processes associated with that pty. ??? Sam -- Snowman

Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with using EVDO high speed wireless broadband service under CentOS? I am looking for high speed / low cost internet connectivity for an office that is in an area without DSL or Cable. My idea was to use EVDO from either Verizon or Sprint with a PCMCIA to PCI adapter card that I could stick into a CentOS machine that is used as the router/firewall. Hi LIst; I would like to bring apache up to listen on an lternate port (like 81 instead of 80) however if I change the listen value in the httpd.conf file then it fails to start saying that : (13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address :81 any Ideas??

Recommendation for HTML editor

I was playing around with Nvu, and discovered it has serious problems. Mainly that it reformats one's code regardless of whether or not one selects the "Don't reformat code" option. I know there are a few HTML editors out there, so I'm not asking if they exist. What I'm wondering if there are those on this list who may have a recommendation for one they like and why. I'm also asking on some other lists. Although I'm looking for editors that will run on CentOS, I can understand if this strays too much from the topic of the list. I previously used Nagios and because of the painful configurations, I found OpenNMS. It does all I need and more, being more easier than Nagios. It uses PostgreSQL and runs on top of Tomcat4. Sound device has been blown away

Well, I spoke to soon. After installing gstreamer-ffmpeg, and creating an .asoundrc file, I thought everything was perfect. All my music applications were handling MP3s, FireFox was playing sounds, everything was sweet. And so I played some music in Rhythmbox. That lasted about four or five songs, and then suddenly, the sound cut out. And at the same time, my keyboard became unresponsive. I could close applications with my mouse, but couldn't type anything in any application. So I rebooted. And when I did, I got a "new hardware detected" old- school interface. It said my Kenwood Audio device had been removed, and I could either remove it's configuration, keep it, or do nothing. I chose to keep it. Then the boot up continued. When finally logged in again, I tried playing some music. No go. So I checked the System Settings | Soundcard Detection utility, and guess what - the Kenwood device is gone. There are no more tabs, there's just one device option, the SB Live device which may or may not be the default motherboard sound device. In any case, it has no speakers and it's not the Kenwood Audio device, which is still attached to my computer and is the device I want to use. What happened to my sound card and how do I get it back? Reading SNMP on other machine

I'm trying to use snmpwalk to look at other machines, but I can't get a response. It keeps timing out. It can see itself, though. I haven't had this problem with other machines and I don't know what's different. Suggestions?

CENTOS 3.5 (AMD64) NFS install issue

We operate a cluster of Sun Xeon IA32 servers with Centos 3.5. Nodes are installed via a host-specific kickstart script which is generated for each node from a master template. Thus all kickstart scripts are clones of the master, edited for hostname, IP address etc only. The CENTOS 3.5 ISO images are exported from a server & that remote NFS mount is also configured in the master template. This works perfectly well & a fully automated installation requiring no operator intervention results. We recently added some new Opteron nodes to give us some 64-bit capability. These of course, use a slightly different master kickstart template as they mount up a different ISO directory from the NFS server, which contains the x86_64 version of Centos 3.5. When we install these 64-bit nodes, however, we get the message: "that directory could not be mounted from the server". On hitting OK we get the usual dialogue box which displays our chosen server IP and the correct x86_64 ISO directory, if we OK that, the NFS installation proceeds unattended as normal. I think we saw a similar thing with redHat 9 NFS kickstart installations but it was quite variable. Anyone seen that with CENTOS3 or RHEL3 & got any clues ? TIA Les

DPMS or hardware

List, I've been bugged by the fact that the dpms function will not work on this machine, and perhaps now I have some clue as to why. Looking at the Xorg.0.log, I see where "Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)" which tells me perhaps this is the reason why it won't turn off the monitor. Also, this line prior to the other. `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/". That part I can maybe fix, but I have no clue what should be in the /dev/apm. The only thing that will happen is the monitor will go into screeensaver mode, or if no saver selected, it will do nothing, not even blank. What should the /dev/apm contain? Where does it pick up the info as to what should be in there, from a probe of the hardware? That said, does the fact that I'm using a custom video driver from ATI make any difference? -- Snowman

Hello everybody. I have been using Mirrordir for a long time and I wanted to know if some of you have been able to use it on a CentOS 4 system. When I try to mirror something, I receive the following error: [root@box scripts]# mirrordir ./test ./test2 Segmentation fault I have downloaded the RPM from here (version 0.10.41-1) : ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/backup/ Is there any other RPM compatible with CentOS 4 ? Hi All, We have an old Centos 3.5 file and database server, running on a pIII computer with Intel 820 mother board. It has a software raid 1(mirror) + LVM on two IDE hard disk. I want to upgrade to a newer computer with pIV - 2.4GHz on a Intel D848PMB mother board. Should I expect any problems if I just move the array from the old machine to the new and boot there? Recommendation On Ping And Alert Tool

A bit off topic, but I keep looking for an answer to this question and coming up with nothing... so I thought I would go to the gurus. :-) Can anyone recommend a good package for pinging other devices and sending an email/alert when they go down? I'm aware of all kinds of more complex things with GUIs and a zillion other bells and whistles we aren't looking for, but we just want a simple tool (could be daemon or something run from cron) that runs every 1 - 5 minutes and alerts us when stuff disappears. Would need some basic logic like only sending one email/alert when something goes down (vs sending an email every 1-5 minutes until it comes back up). :-) We need to avoid a requirement for an X-windows GUI, but a web-GUI would probably be fine (a GUI-less command-line thing would probably be best). Problem with gnome

Hi all, I am using Centos 4.1 with Gnome and my updates are OK (When I do yum update, I have nothing anymore) Normally, with GNOME there's a task bar in the bottom of the screen. If we open an application and we minimize its window, it is always avalaible in this task bar. There are other things in this task bar : a button on the left which is used to minimize all the opened windows and 4 buttons on the right which are used to change the workspace. Yesterday, I had a problem with the station and I had to shut it down with the power button of the Linux station. After a restart, I had a message telling me that there were three applications which were shutted down uncleanly (I don't remember which) and know there is nothing anymore in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen (it is gray). The error message doesn't appear anymore. Does anybody already had this problem ? What can I do to restart this taskbar ? Thank you for your help. Jean LEE

I have the centrino ipw2200 pkg running nicely on my laptop, I suspect that none of the desktop wireless cards will be this easy... The installation of Tomcat and Java is the hardest item. I do know that OpenNMS can do SNMP. Pretty much, I give OpenNMS the IP address and it finds the common services. You may have to go in and define custom services (I had to since my Oracle servers have multiple listener ports). It will try the default SNMP string, but if you change it, there is a web form to change it. You can also enter your asset information through the web form. You can also create custom reports that can be called on the fly. Check out http://www.opennms.org for the screen shots and more information. I've needed int0 (timer) to be sharable, and to change the basic timing interval, so I've had to modify & compile kernels from 7.1->7.3 Since the hardware had 64MB RAM as a fixed limit, stripping the kernel of unnecessary stuff was also helpful. Kernel building

I have not even decided if I want to undertake a kernel build, but for the sake of discussion, if everything happens to be in the stock kernel, why, other than file bloat, would you want to build a custom kernel? In FreeBSD, you can remove all those devices and drivers that are not needed, and, depending on how much stuff you add or delete, can make a decent size reduction in the kernel itself. I'm not smart enough to know if there is a performance trade-off with a whole bunch of unneeded modules or drivers in the kernel, but perhaps common sense tells me that there must be some kind of performance hit otherwise. Kernel building in Linux is very much different from the BSD camps, and I'll admit I'm not sure I understand enough about the Linux build process to undertake it. I am trying kickstart for the first time, and am running into something I don't see described in the documentation. Somewhere between me and my purchasing department and Dell, my order for 6 PE 1850s was changed from "no installed OS" to WIndows. So I received the boxes with Windows pre-installed. I would like to delete the NTFS partition with Windows, but keep the Dell Utility partition on the first partition. In the documentation for kickstart, I see options for deleting linux partitions deleting all partitions but not one for deleting one or more specific partitions. Am I right about this? Mailing list guidelines and moderation

Hey Guys, I am looking to put together a set of guidelines for posting on the CentOS Mailing Lists. The aim being that we come up with a framework that is then enforceable by a moderator, should the need arise. Blanket user / thread moderation is something that I dont really want to enforce here - but might be a necessary evil, over a short period of time. End of the day, we are all educated sensible people - it should not be too much to expect adherence to a reasonable set of guidelines. We also need contributions from the community to help on this effort, the developers are already very stretched, and as has already been pointed out - there are going to be other people, better qualified to handle this role of moderator. I must have something screwed up. When I try to yum the jave jre, it appears that its not finding the file. Below is the output from my command. firefox and mplayer failures

Does anyone else have problems with playing video/audio files under firefox with mplayer? Almost everything I try (the latest were some .asf and .wmv clips) craps out under firefox, but if I save to disk and play with mplayer, they work just fine. A few weeks back I had tried to install CentOS on my old AMD 5x6x (equiv to P75 performance) with plans to use it as my firewall and router. Because there were some problems relating to RPM compile architecture (apparently), I posted and Bryan suggested IPCop, even at peril to his life on these lists ;-) according to him. ;-) ;-) Just wanted to tell him thanks, it's worked out well. Had three old ISA NICs (3Com combos BNC and TP), configured them for 3 different IRQs and IOBEG addresses and have it working beautifully. Have 3 zones and a recent download of several files sized *teen megabytes and larger gave me throughput of 590-600 KB/sec off my cable modem. I am out in the low-density boonies, but I still feel this is fairly impressive. They even have a boot diskette available to support those old BIOS that won't boot CDs, as this unit was. So, thanks Bryan. I'm trying to configure a backup unit on an old Aptiva DX2/66. Have 1 ISA Etherjet. Need a couple more ISA NICS that are configurable for IRQ/IOBASE. Anyone that wants to put two old good ISA NICS into a home where they will be cared for and appreciated, send me an email with details, if config diskette available (even if off the net), price, etc. I'll pay shipping too. greetings, in regards to the question(s) i have posted to the list in in June and today in terms of the Intel Pro/DSL 2200 modem it is an internal pci card that is a dsl modem... or pry more correctly a dsl "winmodem"... it is not the intel product that is mentioned at this site... http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/ a friend of mine mentioned this site... so... as you can tell there is an issue when doing searches between the intel pro/dsl 2200 modem and the intel pro/wireless 2200 units i think what i am struggling to do is find out if it is possible to load a CentOS box in such a WINEmulation or other emulation way and get this card to function on a CentOS box so i can turn cheap PCs into inexpensive gateways with this card... or, can someone recommend another internal DSL modem that i can do this with that supports DMT and works with CentOS - linux to be more specific ?? thanks in advance for any direction or pointers. - rh -- Robert - Abba Communications Computers & Internet Sales/Service www.abbacomm.net

Good morning, everyone... Perhaps this will either help or encourage others interested in using CentOS as a networked workstation. It is based upon my experiences, and all other disclaimers apply. 1. I did a basic workstation install from 4.1 CD's deploying KDE and Gnome desktops and, other than a few minor issues, mostly of my making, everything went smoothly. The install process is excellent, fairly cogent and straightforward. 2. I have used the Rekall database development application with MySQL for nearly a year under various permutations of Linux, most notably Debian and Mandriva. Since it is not delivered with CentOS, I was forced to locate and download the source. I also downloaded and compiled the xbase and xbsql (auxiliary utilities for Xbase) packages with no problems encountered, whatsoever. 3. Another favored application, the Pan Newsreader, has a dependency, the gnet libraries, which I found as a RedHat RPM, on rpmfind.net. Then I simply downloaded the latest Pan build, which has a number of bug fixes in BETA, and installed it from RPM. If you are going to use the latest Pan builds, you will need gnet >=2.04. [Glitches encountered] 1. I have not had the time to RTFM about XSane and its wicked permissions, yet. For the moment, however, I am resorting to firing off XSane as the super-user, since it will not work otherwise. I know it's in the manuals, I just haven't had the time to read the manuals that much, yet. ;-) 2. Of course, as nearly always is the case, regardless of which platform I've been using, I had to manually install the Java runtime and create a link for it in my Firefox configuration. It's not really a glitch; more like it is a fact of life. 3. KDE's kdetoys doesn't apparently come with CentOS. However, that is a project for yet another day, when I have time to truly explore it further. I probably will have to install it from source if I want the weather in my task bar. <sigh> I tried to install it from source, and there are errors from the source. Oh, well. Life goes on. Evolution

When I set up the Evolution mail agent, I could find no way to change the outbound port from 25 to 587. I have to do this due to port 25 being blocked by the cable company. Thunderbird is no problem. Altho I don't particularly use Evolution as a mail agent, there are times when I might use it, but its worthless without being able to send mail out to my server. Did I miss something in the options or setup or is there no provisions for changing the smtp port to another port? -- Snowman

If appears (and I stress "appears") that JavaScript is getting the attention due to Googles use of AJAX and Java Applets do not have the same popularity. Can't get JRE to install so that FireFox sees it

Hot on the heels of the success of getting sound to work with FireFox, I am on to getting Java applets to run. When I go to a page with a Java applet, I get the little Rubik's cube- like icon that says I can click to download. So I do, but FireFox says it can't find it, so I have to install manually. I click on Manual install and I'm taken to a page that allows me to download the RPM within a ".bin" file. That's new to me, but I'm game. I download it and follow the install instructions. It makes me create a /usr/java directory, and open the .bin file there. I have to go through a whole license text file, but in the end it says it's installed. I check in the directory, and there's a jre directory and an RPM file. I wonder why the RPM file is there if it's already installed. I try to install using RPM, and it says it's already installed, so I decide I believe it. I re-open FireFox... and going to the same web page I was at before with the Java applet, I'm presented with the same screen saying I need to install the plug in. What am I doing wrong with the installation? Dave

Just can't get sound working in Firefox

I have been all up and down my Firefox options, and all up and down whatever sound card configurations I could find in Gnome. And I just can't get sound to work. Whether it's a Flash animation, a Quicktime movie, or anything, they all run, but no sound. All other applications that run sound, like Xine or XMMS, work fine (although mysteriously XMMS every now and again loses it's connection to my sound device.) When I look on Google for help, every FireFox related page ultimately says "check your sound configuration" without much more to offer. I'm totally stumped. I'm not even sure where to look anymore. Any suggestions? Dave

Safe to use gstreamer repository for RH or Fedora?

I'd like to install "Gstreamer" so that I can get MP3 support in Rhythmbox. At least, I'm led to believe MP3 support comes with installing Gstreamer from Rhythmbox's FAQ. But when I get to the Gstreamer download page: http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/download/ ... it says: "Do not compile from source yourself unless you are certain you have to or want to" Okay, fine. So I look for an RPM. But it doesn't have those, it only has repositories for Fedora and Red Hat. A while back I messed up my system by installing repositories for Fedora, so I'm wary of doing that kind of thing again. I tried a YUM search for gstreamer to see if it was available on DAG, but no luck there. Does this mean I fall into the category of compiling myself because I have to? The warning on the web site makes it sound like this is something for experts to do. Dave

Mystery Solved! Karanbir Singh gave a clue by suggesting the dsiabling of the splash screen at which point the magic word "LILO" flashed up briefly on the screen. It appears that the machines which were affected all had lilo installed but not configured as bootloader. These machines are all configured identically using a kickstart script. This script does not have lilo enabled in the bootloader. How they actually came to have lilo installed is a bit of a mystery as all the rest plainly do not have it. However when the kernel update was installed by yum, it looked for a bootloader & picked on lilo instead of grub in machines with lilo installed. I the log files of affected systems: Kernel Updated/Installed, checking for bootloader Lilo found - adding kernel to lilo and making it the default Thanks for help Les

Mixing SCSI devices on a single i/f

I have an external HP SureStore DLT VS80 with a SCSI LVD 68 pin interface and an external HP SureStore DAT24 with a SCSI Centronics 50 pin Narrow SE interface. The cable for the DAT has a Centronics connector at one end and a 68 Pin Wide to Narrow terminated connector at the other. The cable for the DLT has a LVD/SE 68 pin connector at both ends. I have terminator blocks for both devices. If I connect the devices thus: terminator --> DAT --> DLT --> scsi_hostadapter (boot hangs) Then the system hangs when booting. I can get the system to boot up form this point by turning off both external tape drives. If I connect the devices individually then the host boots and the system can access which ever is attached to the host. terminator --> DLT --> scsi_hostadapter (boots, device accessible) terminator --> DAT --> scsi_hostadapter (boots, device accessible) My question is: Is it possible to daisy-chain these two devices to the host in manner that permits the system to boot and access both; and if so, how does one accomplish this? CentOS4 and Apache-DBI

Has anybody gotten Apache-DBI to work under CentOS4? My installed rpms are: httpd-2.0.52-12.1.ent.centos4 (came with CentOS4) mod_perl-1.99_16-4.centos4 (came with CentOS4) perl-Apache-DBI-0.94-1.2.el4.rf (from Dag's site) --this includes Apache::DBI and Apache::AuthDBI In my '/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf' file, I added: PerlModule Apache::DBI PerlModule Apache::AuthDBI ..but when I restart Apache I get: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can't locate Apache/Constants.pm in @INC... ... BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5/Apache/AuthDBI.pm line 21. ... Uniprocessor kernel booted after YUM update

We have Xeon IA32 dual-processor servers running Centos 3.5 in an HPC batch-only compute grid configuration . We have yum update operating automatically with default updates being applied weekly. Because of the workload pattern of long-runing jobs, the servers tend to stay up without a reboot for very long periods. Recently, yum installed an updated kernel 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp; when we got around to rebooting, we found that some of the machines were running the uniprocessor kernel 2.4.21-32.0.1.EL , showing only a single cpu. The grub.conf file had been modified in the usual pushdown manner but the default kernel had been set at #2 instead of #0. Bizzarely, some of the systems DID boot the upgraded SMP kernel as expected. However, if we use the interactive GRUB boot menu & select the correct kernel interactively, it then boots SMP OK with both processors and all memory available. I tried the obvious ploy of removing the last three kernel entries in grub.conf & setting default=0 but it still manages to boot the 2.4.21-32.0.1.EL UP kernel even though it is no longer in the kernel menu list. We think we will disable automatic yum kernel updates in future , but meanwhile, has anyone any suggestions or experiences to share on this apart from a complete re-install of each affected node? greetings i used to use slackware years ago. i would still use it in conjunction with CentOS etc if i had more time and extra financial resources. thing is, years ago i used to subscribe to reminder emails from packages like Apache httpd etc and they would tickle me when new releases or betas were available. i still get emails from them... anyways, the question i am wondering is... when a mainstream package like Apache httpd is upgraded to a newer version and released by the package maintainers, how long does it take for that to be picked up by our "upstream" and then incorporated and pushed to CentOS availability? thanks in advance - rh -- Robert - Abba Communications Computers & Internet Sales/Service www.abbacomm.net

I'm specifically looking at the winbindd improvements. Mine keeps dying. I have a work around but most questions to the samba list get answered with: upgrade to 3.0.20... I am considering upgrading (reinstalling) to centos 4 but that only gets me to 3.0.10. php with oci8 support

I am attempting to build php with oracle oci8 support. I've installed the oracle installclient basic and devel rpms. When kicking off the srpm buid I am using the following... rpmbuild --with oci8 --rebuild php-4.3.9-3.8.src.rpm While on an FC 4 box this works and I end up with a php-oci8 pkg that is fully functional. However on CentOS 4.1 the build isn't actually building with oci8 and fails with .... File not found: /var/tmp/php-root/usr/lib/php4/oci8.so I've played around with the spec file and it looks like this could be the culprit. Has anyone got this to work besides building from source?

Centos 3 samba upgrade

Currently we have RH7.3 with compiler gcc 2.96.x My mission, should I choose to accept it, involves moving our embedded application to CentOS 4.1 with gcc 3.x Problem is that about 1/2 million lines of code that gcc 2.96 accepts gives fatal fits to the gcc 3.x compiler from CentOS 4.1 I don't know how many fatal fits, as some disguise others etc. "Can't find register to spill" is a common exit-barf from gcc 3.x. What I'd like to find is a comparison of gcc 2.96.x to 3.x from the perspective of porting something from RH7.x to CentOS/RHEL 4.x What I did was make a fresh install of CentOS 4.1 and then load the source code for the application and try to make. What gcc 2.96 compiler assumed about the underlying OS, and what gcc 3.x assumes about the underlying OS, may be relatively skew. Whether any of the application code assumes a 2.96 set of assumptions, where this set of assumptions is broken under 3.x, is unknown (and is the kind of detail I'd like to see in the above-hinted-at porting guide). If I'm killing the 3.x compiler with code that 2.96 accepted, it ought to be from well-known (by now) reasons like (I'm making this up for an example) "memset used to be a routine but now it is a macro ..:. don't give it macro parameters." This does not appear to me to be a porting problem, but a defective compiler. Is there any reason you must use the later compiler? As to whether C or C++ changed between when 2.96 came out and Centos 4.1, there is another conundrum: Does the compiler define the language, or vice versa? Acknowledging the human factor in the implementation of the compiler, we ought to stipulate that both 2.96 and 3.x are B - R - O - K - E - N; the question I've asked is in what way is 3.x different in how it's broken compared to 2.96 2.96 allowed some things not strictly kosher under the C/C++ language definitions, some of these are no longer winked at by the 3.x compiler. I'm looking for a pragmatic answer, not a theorist answer, about the differences between 2.96 and 3.x. Since nothing is coming to mind among the Notable Ones here, I'll take my question to the compiler groups...
