what's the right way to ask help for unsupported kernel

hi, as i already wrote mail to this list after we upgrade from centos-3 to centos-4 with kernel-unsupported we has a once a week kernel crash. we're not able to manage to find the real reason, but we've got this once a week and it's a very big problem. we need novel fs support so we can't use the standard kernel. i can't report it redhat because they refuse to look into it since it's centos' kernel and not rhel's one (what's more the unsupported version, so even the config are modified). anybody else send back to centos, but centos is just recompile the rh one:-( so what do you think what is the right place to report this error to be able to get some kind of help to find the problem (or even more to fix it:-) i'm just attached the today's crash' netdump log file: [Fwd: crash netdump black] thank you for your help in advance. yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!" 3w-xxxx: scsi0: Command failed: status = 0xc7, flags = 0x40, unit #2. 3w-xxxx: scsi0: AEN: ERROR: Drive error: Port #2. Installed program not found

I recently configured and made the drivers for my wacom device. It installed okay, the drivers seem to be working, and there were no errors in the configure and make process. However, one application that was supposed to be isntalled is a graphical tablet configuration utility called wacomcpl. So far as I know, it should be installed. But perhaps it is somewhere that is not included in the path. But I have no idea where the program would have been installed to. I can't find by Google the right command on the net to find out where an application is, although I'm sure it exists. What should I do to try and find an application called wacomcpl on my system? LVM Snapshot Create Error

Just discovered that on CentOS 4.1 when you issue the command: lvcreate -s -n temp -L2G /dev/vgname/lvname to create a snapshot, you get the error message: snapshot: Required device-mapper target(s) not detected in your kernel I've checked and recheck my spelling and tried using the device created under /dev/mapper. I've tried it on both x86_64 and on i386. Works as expected under CentOS 3.5. Any ideas what is going on?

I am progressing with this but i still gat a problem. . Linux newbie asks about sonypi on laptop

Okay. I've been able to set my laptop's screen brighter by working with the program spicctrl and the sonypi device. But everytime I boot, I login under my username then have to do the following every time... First I go into the bash terminal, then su because I can't do this under my login name mknod /dev/sonypi c 10 250 #because sonypi is not listed in /dev - it disappears everytime I shut down then I type chmod o+w sonypi #because I want to be able under my login name, not root, to set the brightness then i exit su and type spicctrl --setbrightness=150 and it works... My questions are: Why do I have to recreate the device every time? Shouldn't it be there every time? Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Ralph Loizzo

Reinstall Windows but preserve CentOS

I have a computer that dual boots between Windows and CentOS. Each has it's own hard drive. I suddenly have a problem with Windows, and may need to reinstall. I need it for applications like After Effects, Premiere, and other things that I am currently in the middle of a project with. It seems the system has become usnstable, it's preventing me from continuing to work, and I may need to wipe the Windows partition clean and start again. My concern is that if I do that, I will lose the Grub boot loader and not be able to access CentOS again. How can I reinstall Windows with a clean partition, and preserve my dual booting? Dave

greetings, since i have a test server in front of me and i have never tried it i request your assistance please. ive always been a fdisk and lilo person i have a fresh CentOS 4 "test" install on a WD120 sata /dev/sda /dev/sda1 / /dev/sda2 /boot /dev/sda3 swap and it just so happens i have a old test 17Gig Maxtor PATA with a fresh Win98 on it from helping my father migrate to a newer cpu and opsys when i go into a fdisk /dev/hda i get this "print" /dev/hda1 c: w95 fat32 lba /dev/hda2 w95 ext lba /dev/hda5 d: w95 fat 32 currently i can boot into the CentOS 4 install and it does not see the PATA drive by default unless i go into fdisk of course. it is not mounted. or i can switch them and boot into win98, whatever is best for this learning test. ive always tried to have 2 or more (hot/cold swapouts) of everything client and server hardwares so i never needed to dual boot. can someone show me what steps they would take using linux rescue to get this "test" situation to dual boot please? i did try with "linux rescue" and was rec'v grub not found errors when running grub-install /dev/sda so im sure i have done something worng. also, i can make the windows pata drive primary or the linux sata primary so please advise what is best. maybe i didnt understand the recent thread re: dual boot situation. thanks in advance and kind regards, - rh -- Robert Hanson Abba Communications http://www.abbacomm.net

NFS and Linux Firewall Conflict

If I run showmount -e <my_server_ip> from the client, with the firewall set to on on the server, I get rpc mount export: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = No route to host If I turn it off, I can connect. So far, I have 111 and 2049 tcp and udp open and 4002 udp open. Anybody know what I'm missing? Best, John Hinton

filesystem corruption: resize inode not valid

Hello. I am having a problem with one CentOS 4 box I have installed. It worked perfectly for several days, was used as a gateway on my LAN. After having reached the limit of the disk size by copying stuff from a windows box to a samba shared drive on the centOS box, and after making a reboot, the server didn't come up anymore. Looking at it I was thrown to the repair console and when doing an 'e2fsck /dev/md1' there was the following message: "resize inode not valid". >From there on, I can answer to the repair questions, but after finishing the filesystem repair, and redoing a filesystem check (after reboot or not) the same error message comes up. I cannot go out of it and the ext3 filesystem (in software raid 1) seems completely mixed up. Did somebody else have this problem already ? I had a look around the internet and I have seen several people having had this problem these last months. I was using the e2fsck verison 1.35 (current version of CentOS). Thanks for any help one could provide. Daniel

I had my eye on the Tyan dual-Opteron mobos for awhile. I tried to find a posting *anywhere* sharing experiences with these boards under Linux. No such luck. So placing myself under the heading "Where Angles Fear to Tread," I went ahead and built a system anyway. Here's what I've learned. The specs: Tyan Thunder K8SE S2892, BIOS 1.01 2x Opteron 270, 2Ghz Dual-Core, retail package with fan 2GB RAM (4x SuperTalent 512MB P/N D32RB12P3) 3Ware 9500S-4LP 4 port SATA controller 4x 200GB Segate ST3200826AS 7200.8 SATA (attached to 3Ware controller) 1x 80GB Wester Digital WD800JD-00LSA0 SATA (attached to onboard controller) Antec Truepower 2.0 550W PSU Chenming 901A-0-0 RTL Case Supermicro 5-drive SATA HD Cage CentOS 4.1 x86_64 I thought I bought a plenty large case. Turns out the CPU heat sink at the front of the motherboard sticks up far enough to interfere with the drive bays at the bottom of the case. I had carefully mounted the CPUs, heat sinks and memory before mounting the motherboard. When I tried to insert the motherboard, the front heat sink hit the shelf that supports one of the two internal hard drive cages that come with the Chenming case. I had to peel off the heat sink to get the board in then reinstall it -- something I didn't want to do. If the case was 9" wide instead of 8", this probably wouldn't be an issue. The heat sink sticks up far enough to keep me from reinstalling the internal hard drive cages. Not a problem since I'm using the Supermicro SATA cage, but it bugs me to lose expansion possibilities. Can anyone recommend a "low-rise" Opteron heat sink? I hadn't yet purchased an optical drive and so was planning on booting the install program from a USB key. However I could not get the BIOS to recognize the key. I put 'removable drives' at the top of the boot preferences but it refused to recognize the key. I ended up doing a PXE boot install instead. The install hung once forcing me to restart. But after that the install process was the fastest I've ever seen, taking about seven minutes to copy everything. Booting the first time, I was happy to see that everything was recognized by the system, all three network ports, the Nvidia SATA controller and even the 3Ware controller. However, the boot messages showed: warning: many lost ticks. Your time source seems to be instable or some driver is hogging interrupts and several repeating messages: powernow-k8: error - out of sync... Also, /proc/cpuinfo showed each cpu as running at about 1004Mhz with about 900 bogomips. Not what I expected. I decided to press ahead and added a couple of drives the the 3Ware, created a unit, formatted it and began benchmarking the array. The "powernow" messages continued to occur and then the 3Ware driver started issuing error messages. Eventually the system crashed and stopped responding. Googling on the powernow error message let me know that the kernel wizards had started to fix some powernow bugs starting with about kernel 2.6.10. Of course the stock CentOS 4.1 kernel is 2.6.9-11. So I downloaded, compiled and installed kernel 2.6.12.3. On rebooting, the error messages went away and the 3Ware worked without complaint. Now /proc/cpuinfo showed each cpu running at 2009.267 Mhz with 4014.08 bogomips. Ah, much better! In addition, the system came up in with NUMA enabled. Looks like the Red Hat kernel had it turned off by default. I benchmarked disk array performance using Bonnie++ version 1.03a. I ran six benchmarks using 50GB of data, three using 16k blocks and three using 64k blocks. During the raid 0 testing I had two instances of Setiathome running. During the raid 5 testing I had three instances of Setiathome running. Writes drop to about 35MB/Sec under raid 5, about 25% of the raid 0 performance. In fact, it was taking so long that I aborted the last test. Just to be sure that setiathome wasn't interfering, I killed seti and reran a smaller test. Writes increased to about 50MB/Sec without seti running. I was expecting some hit for raid 5 but not this much. Guess I'll stick with the hot rsync backups to other hosts scheme that I'm using now. As a final test, I restarted the 50GB benchmark under raid5 and popped out one of the drives. There was a pause while I guess the 3Ware controller decided that the drive actually went off-line. The writing then continued to the remaining three disks. Checking the controller showed that both the drive and the unit were 'DEGRADED.' After popping the disk back in, I had to remove and re-add the drive to the array configuration then start the rebuild process. At this point the drive showed 'DEGRADED' and the unit showed 'REBUILDING.' The 3Ware drive logged appropriate messages when the disk was removed and replaced. I didn't bother finishing the rebuild, but it looked like it would take a couple of hours to finish if I let the benchmark continue to run. The 3Ware controller is pretty cool. As I said, the driver (3w-9xxx) is included in the 2.6 kernel. 3Ware provides a simple CLI utility for management. They also have a GUI tool but I didn't bother running it. You can create, remove and verify 'units' on a running system. The associated /dev entries are dynamically added and removed as you make changes. Very nice. In summary, the Tyan S2892 plus the 3Ware controller runs well under CentOS 4.1 although you will have to update to a more current kernel than the one provided by Red Hat. Watch your clearance at the front of the motherboard when selecting a case. Comments and corrections are encouraged. Kirk Bocek

Nautilus / Desktop Icons

Hi, I've a nautilus problem with CentOS 4. It doesn't show the desktop items any more (also after dropping all gnome files/dirs from a users homedir) en the right mouse button menu also doesn't work. Googling around I've found various items about the problem but until now not a clear solution. Some people mention some 'browser mode in nautilus preferences'. But I can't get there. Even if I login with a KDE desktop I can't launch nautilus (nothing happens). Any ideas? I've SELinux enabled, I hope that's not related? Text to Speech on CentOS4

I am setting up a laptop (Sony VAIO PCG-4?) for my learning disabled son (age 11). I have previously used MicroSoft 2Kpro and XPpro / Office 2K platforms for text-to-speech applications as that is what most commercial LD Assist software is written for. However, with MS now requiring that one inventories ones entire computer software configuration with them before getting updates to their software coupled with the high risk nature of doing without those updates, I am reluctant to continue this practice. What I am looking for is a robust, good quality, text-to-speech reader that can work with Open Office under CentOS4. I have googled extensively but frankly I need a bit of guidance as to what is the best of breed available. If the package uses/supports ATT Natural Voices as an option then that would be wonderful as I already have the necessary licences for those voices. Does anyone here have any experience with this type of software and can recommend a particular package? Commercial apps. are fine. It is functionality I am after, not economies. The 9.1.5.2 was fine. In fact the 9.2 firmware delivered (FE9X 2.06.00.009) with the driver is buggy if you use more than 1 unit. (Hotspares are considered as an unit.). We got a new firmware from 3ware support and it solves the problem. With some tweaking and 5 x RAID 5 volume on 3 x 3ware card (capacity around 5TB) we got with the iozone test 160MB/s write and 270MB/s Read. If you want more detailed information contact me.

USB ethernet driver?

Hi, I have a new networking card for my laptop: Linksys USBVPN1. It's a USB networking with a build-in firewall. I have CentOS 4.1 with the latest yum update. When I plug it in, CentOS does not even recognize it. I have check, /var/log/messages and nothing in the dmesg. Layer 1 works, I do have proper link connection, the correct lights come up both on the switch and on the USBVPN1. Mail problem

I have a problem finding the log from centos. I have installed qmail and i receive a lot of infected mails and i can't stop them because i don't know the ip from where they came. I know that in log files it is kept that ip but i havent't find it. In /var/log/ maillog it is a list but it does not have the ip of the mails. Can anyone help me? Japanese Language Support?

When I installed CentOS, I was careful to install Japanese language support. However, now that CentOS is running, I can't seem to get Japanese language input going. I clicked on the top menu bar to add the "Input Method Switcher", and now there is a little white square on the top panel. If I click on it, gives me the option of using ASCII input, or to "Add or Remove". If I click on "Add or Remove", I get an "Add or Remove Languages" dialoge box, which is empty. There are no languages to add to the list of selections, and nothing in the area marked "Languages shown in menu" either. There are also no options to install languages. I went to Applications | System Settings | Add/Remove Applications to look for language settings, but they weren't there. How do I get my Japanese language input up and running? Dave

Is centos 4 compatible with gateway 7400 server. We have some spare gateway 7400 servers with 2 intel Pentium iii (FC-PGA Socket 370) processors operating at 667 mhz. I used to be able to modify my modules.conf file so that certain NIC cards would load specific drivers. Has this changed in kernel 2.6 i.e. <snip /etc/modules.conf> alias eth0 e100 alias eth1 e1000 </snip> It used to be that I could reverse this order and eth0 would be the GigE card.

[CentOS] New to CentOS, and wondering about application availability

Centos Mailing List, Hello. I have just recently installed CentOS on my home computer, and just joined this mailing list. I have a lot of questions so I will have quite a few postings in the next few days. I was using Fedora Core 4 for a few weeks, but it was unstable and had trouble reading some of my DVD drives and other issues. So, I decided to switch to another distribution. I saw on one site that the three distros being nominated for best distribution by user's vote were Ubuntu, CentOS, and Fedora Core. I tried Ubuntu, but the installer kept failing. So I went to CentOS. Anyway, long story short, CentOS looks and feels just like Fedora (which I like), and it reads all my DVD drives normally, so I think I could be happy with it. But... When I tried to install Xine, using yum, it said it could not find it. And then I went looking for an RPM for Xine, and they're all for Red Hat or Fedora. I tried installing an RPM for Fedora anyway, reasoning that maybe they were the same in more than just looks, but no dice. As I looked around the net, it seems that applications all seem to have specific builds for Red Hat, Fedora, a couple of Debian builds... but no CentOS. Going by the amount of available information and support, Fedora is the primary Linux distribution, and CentOS hardly even exists. Can't I have it all? Stability, the ability to read my DVD drives, *and* a variety of applications? Is there any kind of resource for instructions on installing CentOS like there is this one for Fedora: http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_4_installation_notes.html Dave

what the best ? apt-get? yum or urpmi ?

Hello, I must make a choice concerning the use of a tool used to update rpms: yum, urpmi or apt-get. Personally, I use urpmi every day, without real problems (the dependences, even those of Perl are very well managed), the "hdlist" can be used in several forms , it contains a lot of funtions but, it is not integrated into up2date and does not have a graphic interface that fits Centos3 without break all depedencies. There are also the two others: yum and apt-get. Because Centos uses yum, I would like to have a feedback: speed of calculations for the dependences, comparative with apt-get. There are already opinions on the question (yum is easy to install, more flexible, but less powerful. and to connect itself itself to the sources + download the lists of packages even if no update is avaible...... grrr). So, Wthat need I to use for a Centos-like ditribution? (It's to intagrate the tool on Gralinux final) apt-get + synaptic?? yum+yumi???urpmi in command line only ??? Thanks :) jean-seb

vsftpd and Kickstart

I'm trying to setup a kickstart server that will use ftp. I created a user account and put the ISO images in /home/centos. I created a directory /home/centos/disc1 and mounted the first ISO image there. When I try to do the ftp install I keep getting an error "Unable to retrieve ftp://my.ftpserver.com//home/centos/disc1/CentOS/base/netstg2.img" I tried different versions of the ftp directory but the error above is using /home/centos/disc1. If I manually ftp into the machine and cd to /home/centos/disc1/CentOS/base/ I can get netstg2.img. However if I do it like this it won't work: ftp> get /home/centos/disc1/CentOS/base/netstg2.img local: ./home/centos/disc1/CentOS/base/netstg2.img remote: /home/centos/disc1/CentOS/base/netstg2.img local: ./home/centos/disc1/CentOS/base/netstg2.img: No such file or directory ftp> pwd 257 "/home/centos" So, I don't know if vsftpd isn't configured correctly or if I'm not doing something right with the kickstart install. Hi there -- The version number associated with the driver is 0. There is no further information available other than it was listed within the driver disk creation utility as a Red Hat Enterprise 3 driver. Versions 3.3 and 3.4 are the only two of the 3.x line that support the x86_64 architecture. Usually, the kernel version for the driver needs to match the kernel it is built for. So, you would use CentOS-3 or CentOS-2.1 and get the ISO that you need, based on the driver. We did not release a CentOS-3.0 ... so there is not a CD for that. Hi there -- I was going to experiment with a CentOS x86_64 install in the following manner: One of our new dual-xeon servers is using an Adaptec SATA controller card that has drivers available for Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1 and Enterprise Linux 3.0. I was going to create the drivers for one or the other and then attempt an install via the linux dd command. My question is, would either of these drivers work with a version of CentOS, and if so what version could I use? Thanks.

Greetings - I'm looking to put some cheap storage into my server, which is running centos 3. I'm looking at the Maxtor SATA/150 PCI Card and a big maxtor sata drive. I would like to make sure that CentOS has driver for this controller. I looked in Red Hat's hardware database and did some google'ing but I couldn't find any info to confirm that this card is compatible. Any ideas where else to look? Thanks Mike

Fighting some install issues with a new box

Folks- I have had a machine dropped in my lap that I am trying to get CentOS 4.1 to run on as a first pass (the hope is for it to eventually run Rocks -- http://www.rocksclusters.org , which uses CentOS 4.x as its underlying OS). The machine has 2 Opteron 250DP (2.4GHz) with 4 GB of RAM. It is using a Tyan Thunder K8WE (S2895A2NRF) motherboard with an nVidia nForce chipset -- http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8we.html. It is configured to boot from an SATA drive (80GB) and then use 3Ware 8506-8 card with 8x250GB SATA drives in a big raid 5 as a data store. So, CentOS appears to recognize the nics and find the boot drive well enough to go through a complete install. Now this is where things get "interesting" .. the install process hung for a very long period of time during the "installing grub" phase (this was a cd install, so no post or anything, done off-line). It finally rebooted, but it just hangs at the "GRUB Loading stage2..." If I boot the machine using the 4.1 install cd in rescue mode, I can see the filesystem (the OS is installed). /etc/grub.conf doesn't look unreasonable. One oddball thing is that I cannot see the 3ware card at all (doesn't show up in lspci output). Any thoughts? Anyone set up a similar beastie? Thanks. Sean

Software to monitor security logs and email ISPs?

I know they have software that does this. I'm just not sure which one it is. Basically here's the scoop. I'm on a cable modem connection with Comcast. I have a firewall router and I run a firewall on CentOS as well. All the same, other computers (probably zombies or hackers) are attempting brute force attacks on a couple of ports on my computer. I've just sat and watched them for some time. Not thinking that much of it. But I'd like to actually do something about it and inform the ISPs of said computers that that computer is compromised or being used by a hacker. I know there is software out there that will monitor your logs, reverse trace the IP address, and contact the ISP saying that at X time on X day X IP address tried to brute force hack my machine. I guess it's one of those things where I'm sick of seeing it come up in my security log, so I'd like to start sending email to the ISPs to tell them to do their job and enforce their rules for all the Windoze users out there. But I don't want to take the time to do it manually. Any suggestions? Preston

I have a problem finding the log from centos. I have installed qmail and i receive a lot of infected mails and i can't stop them because i don't know the ip from where they came. I know that in log files it is kept that ip but i havent't find it. In /var/log/ maillog it is a list but it does not have the ip of the mails. Can anyone help me? Not booting without keyboad.

Hi, I'm running CentOS 3 on a Dell celeron 500/256 MB. It won't boot without a keyboard and that is a problem for me. I know it is not a perfect setup, but I'd like to have it boot w/o a keyboard. The Bios doesn't seem to care too much about the fact that no keyboard is plugged in, as it loads Grub and starts booting the kernel. Install Problems Centos 4.1

Dear All, I have a K8S-MX Asus Athlon 64 Motherboard with a 754 pin 3000+ CPU, which I cam trying to install 4.1 Centos 64 bit. The problem seems to arise when installing onto Mirrored disks, I have noticed that from Centos 4 onwards it tries to rebuild the arrays as it installs which slows the whole process right down across all platforms I have tried it on. In addition, the install process bails out at random times with random errors eg. "Disk Full", "error loading this package or that package", Error reading DVD etc... now I have burnt several copies of the DVD, tested them fully, tried installing from CD, even changed the hardware to a twin Opteron system, changed the RAM changed this disks and tried everything but it still seems really touch and go as to wether the install will complete. I haven't managed it yet on the Asus platform it took about 12 goes on the opteron platform. Yet Centos 3.4 installs no problem. RAID 5 vs. RAID 10

Hi, I am looking into purchasing a new server. This server will be mission-critical. I have read and somewhat understood the theories behind RAIDs 0, 1, 5, 10 & JBOD. However, I would like to get some feedback from those who have experience in implementing and recovering from a HDD failure using RAID. Hardware specs include:- Dual Xeon 3.2 GHz 2 GB RAM I would like to implement hardware RAID but am unsure as to which would be most suitable for my needs. Any advice is appreciated. Option 1 - RAID 5 (3 hdd's) + 1 hot spare Option 2 - RAID 10 (4 hdd's) + 1 "cold" spare (in the shelf) Questions I have :- 1) When should RAID 5 be implemented? 2) When should RAID 10 be implemented? 3) Is RAID 5 with a hot spare safer than RAID 10 with a "cold" spare? 4) Is it possible to configure RAID 10 to have a hot spare? 5) Should one of the HDDs fail, a hot spare w kick-in immediately and begin rebuilding. As I am planning to put in 300 GB HDDs, how long would this take on a RAID 5 vs. RAID 10? 6) Will there be a degradation in performance for users on the system (RAID 5 vs. RAID 10)? 7) What are the disadvantages of using RAID 5 vs. RAID 10? CentOS 4 snag with htaccess

I'm hitting a snag with htaccess. Have created .htaccess and .htpasswd files, set up apache directory options just like always... the exact same setup works fine on CentOS 3, but I can't seem to get it to authenticate on CentOS 4? Am I just being blind stupid (as in not seeing something 'exactly the same') or is there something different I'm missing? I have selinux running in warn mode I think it was, but not fully enabled. Open Office 1.9.x

Having used Open Office 1.9.x on the XP side of my box, I decided to install it on the CentOS side. (The default OO was 1.1.2, for heaven's sake!) I downloaded the Linux 386 version from the OO site. I immediately ran into problems-- 1) The installation instructions were for OO 1.x. 2) The download appears to be source RPMs. Although I've used UNIX & Linux for over 15 years, there are still some empty spots in my toolbox--and dealing with RPMs in one of them. (YUM is SO much nicer!) Has anyone added OO1.9.113 to CentOS? Where can I find info on what I need to do to get OO1.9.x added to my CentOS installation? Any help will be much appreciated! -mj-

Centos 4.1, ClamScan and Kernel Leaks

I recently installed ClamAV on my Centos 4.1 system (AMD Athlon 64 3500 +, 1GB RAM). I'm using postfix, with fetchmail to retrieve email from remote ISP accounts and processing emai through a spamfilter plugin, which is a shell script that passes inbounds through clamscan and spamassassin before handing it off to a local procmail for processing and delivery. Pror to installing ClamAV, the system stayed up for months at a time. Since then, I'm seeing a lot of system freezes and crashes, at least once per day. I'm also seeing a fair number of complaints in the boot log about ACPI errors and the like. I'm on kernel 2.6.9-11.EL. In the messages log, I can see where just prior to the system freeze, there are a sequence of messages regarding the system's inability to reset the USB adapter, of which no devices are attached. Almost immediately after, I see errors with the system gets error messages on read capacity on the hard drives. After this appears to reset itself, I start seeing kernel messages about available memory dropping from 1GB to less than 1MB. Any suggestions/advice? How to manually mount LVM partition

Hello list, For some strange reason, the hard drive on one of our servers crashed. The hard drive was using LVM and it was sending these messages during boot-up: EXT3-fs error (device dm-0): ext3_find_entry: reading directory ... EXT3-fs error (device dm-0): ext3_set_inode_loc: unable to read inode block= ... I want to be able to at least access the logical volumes inside that hard drive. How then do I manually mount the LVM partition when it is connected as slave in another computer? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. I've done a test backup/restore on Centos3 with mondo, any one know if it works with Centos4? If so, same packages in from /mnt/cdrom/RPMS/RHE/3.0 I dont have a Ceontos4 test machine handy to mess around with

Palm Pilot, USB, pppd and udev

I've a line like this that creates /dev/pilot link in my local udev rules: BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}="Palm Handheld*", KERNEL="ttyUSB*[13579]", SYMLINK="pilot" And it seems to work fine for doing normal sync operation to Gnome Palm applet (well, not sure about that KERNEL parameter, however ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1 look exactly the same, no other way to specify "use second device" as far as I can see). But, if I use the USB connection to connect to the network (using my Linux box as gateway by running "pppd auth -chap +pap login local ms-dns 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.1:10.0.0.2 pilot" and doing SNAT) I've noticed that sometimes when I disconnect, the ttyUSB* devices are not removed by udev. When devices are removed, I'm getting something like this in my log files: kernel: visor ttyUSB0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0 kernel: visor ttyUSB1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB1 However, when devices are not removed, I'm getting a bit different message: kernel: usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 4 kernel: visor 2-1:1.0: device disconnected I've just started playing with my Palm under Linux, and so far I've only noticed this when using PPP over USB. So far when doing plain-old synchronzation (to gnome Palm applet) it seems that devices are always created and removed as expected. Has anybody else noticed this and/or has advice what to do? system-config-display problem

Had centos 4.1 set up and running with X. Had to replace the monitor to an Acer LCD monitor (model AL1714). When I try to reconfigure X, "system-config-display" seems ok going through the first stage of detecting the graphics card but then returns a floating "Input not supported" message to the screen and nothing happens afterward. Hello, I'm thinking about migrating from RHEL 4 to CentOS. Is there a document that provide pointer / guidance for doing that ? or is this document: http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=19 relevant enough to follow in my situation ? I understand that I should probably strip the install of any RedHat images, trademark, etc, as to not infringing any copyright. So I am wondering if there's a list of things to do / document to show that. Hi Joseph, FreeRadius 1.0.1-3 works fine on my systems using local system authentication (using UNIX instead of PAM). In my users configuration file, I have the following defined: "DEFAULT Auth-Type = System". Please also note, however, that your daemon will require READ access to your /etc/shadow file and you probably have it running with little to no permissions. You should create a new group (ex: shadow) and assign it to your /etc/shadow with read access and add your FreeRadius user into the group. That should correct your authentication issues. I vaguely recall having problems when I first tried to have it use PAM authentication (based on the RHEL3 version), but I haven't looked at the issue since then. Regards, -Joshua

I'm always weary to thrown a yesteryear i960 at RAID. The i960s really have a 50-60MBps throughput limit. Granted, if you're going to do RAID-5, then it'll get you far better performance than a 3Ware 8506 series at writes. The 3Ware (let alone even software RAID-5) will kill it at reads, but when it comes to writes, 3Ware 8506s won't break 30MBps (and software RAID-5 will typically either do worse, or slam your CPU-memory-I/O interconnect so hard it'll be busy with nothing else). I sure wish a tier-1 OEM put an XScale solution in, instead of age-old i960 products. You're going to be stuck in I/O hell. The ProLiant DL380 is a ServerSet IIILE, not ideal, but better. You at least get 4-8x the I/O of a i440BX/GX. Getting _exact_ model numbers helps. Having problems compiling program

I get the errors: zip4_lnx.a(generic.o)(.text+0xb16): more undefined references to `__ctype_b' follow zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_close(a)GLIBC_2.0' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_catch_error(a)GLIBC_2.0' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_addr(a)GLIBC_2.0' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_lookup_versioned_symbol_skip(a)GLIBC_2.0' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_lookup_versioned_symbol(a)GLIBC_2.0' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_lookup_symbol(a)GLIBC_2.0' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_loaded(a)GLIBC_2.1' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_open(a)GLIBC_2.0' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_signal_error(a)GLIBC_2.0' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_global_scope(a)GLIBC_2.0' zip4_lnx.a(libdl.so): undefined reference to `_dl_lookup_symbol_skip(a)GLIBC_2.0' I have the compatibility libraries installed. I have tried using gcc296, gcc, and gcc4 and still get the message. The library,libdl.so.2 is in /lib with a symlink to /usr/lib/libdl.so Using CentOS 4.0. -- If the sane say the insane are insane, What if the sane are insane? Would that make the insane sane?
